"Geologic structure and properties are the primary influences on ground control at San Juan Mine. Geotechnical properties of the coal seam and near seam strata, the presence of above seam sandstone paleochannels and water, are thought to be the leading contributors to ground control issues. It is the confluence of specific geologic conditions rather than isolated features that most often produce adverse conditions. Altering primary support installation and mining practices are done when unfavorable conditions appear during development. Installation of standing support is most often employed when adverse conditions develop at later dates. REGIONAL GEOLOGIC SETTING San Juan Mine is an underground coal mine located on the western flank of the San Juan Basin in northwest New Mexico. The San Juan Basin is contained within the south eastern region of the Colorado Plateau geographic province. The basin contains multiple coal bearing formations and is also a major producer of coalbed methane gas. San Juan Mine is stratigraphically located within the Fruitland Formation. From a prominent monocline marking the western boundary of the basin, the formation dips gently to the east towards the center of the basin. The primary driver for the deposition of coal bearing formations within the basin was the Cretaceous Inland Seaway. Multiple cycles of transgression and regression driven by sea level rise and tectonic subsidence deposited rock types from marine shale’s to terrestrial sandstones. The Sevier Mountains to the west of the seaway likely provided the sediment supply for the Fruitland Formation. During a major cycle of seaward regression, the Pictured Cliffs Sandstone Formation prograded over the marine Lewis Shale. The coal bearing Fruitland Formation followed, being deposited over the Pictured Cliffs. The Fruitland Formation contains numerous coal seams and is approximately 400 ft. thick at San Juan Mine. Fruitland Formation coal seams are numbered in order of superposition. San Juan mines the Fruitland number 8 seam. Dating has placed the age of the seam at approximately 73 to 75 million years [1]. LOCAL GEOLOGIC SETTING The Fruitland 8 coal seam dips approximately 1-3 degrees towards the E-NE. At San Juan Mine, the seam displays a mild plunging, synclinal structure, the axis roughly bisecting the mine from west to east. The number 8 seam consists of five coal benches and four volcanic ash band partings labeled sequentially based on superposition. The lowest portion of the seam is the 8-1 bench, the 8-2 through 8-5 benches following sequentially to the top of the minable seam. Ash band partings are labelled P1 through P4 from bottom to top respectively. The presence of distinctive partings and benches allows for seam definition and aids in identifying mining horizons."

This paper presents comparison of proposed future solution and in-situ mining methods for in-situ leaching and recovery of uranium, gold, silver, and copper. We propose to show that in the future new extraction methods for each metal will eventually evolve for each hydrometallurgical process step, i.e. in-situ leaching, recovery, and concentration; precipitation and reduction; and drying, when required--without generating waste or bleed streams. In the future, to be highly profitable, these forms of mining will develop into an integrated system to eliminate waste streams using safe, powerful lixiviants. This integration will include, with some exceptions, improvements in the following areas of process development: 1. Lixiviant selection and in-situ leaching technique, 2. Target metal recovery and concentration (at a surface hydrometallurgical facility) from the circulating pregnant lixiviant stream, 3. Target metal precipitation or reduction, where decant water from the precipitate dewatering step is reusable for resin or solvent strip liquor (eluant), 4. Final preparation of target metal for sales, i.e. drying, purification, casting, packaging, 5. Restoration where most of the groundwater restoration process is performed at the same rate as multi-wellfield mining.

Although lateritic deposits have long been a principal source of bauxite and are becoming an increasingly important source of nickel, the problems in the evaluation of such deposits are not generally understood. In the evaluation of lateritic bauxite and nickel deposits, there are many similarities, but there also. are significant differences. It has long been recognized that laterites with commercial concentrations of trivalent metals represent the ultimate in the intense leaching of tropical soils. Any factors which effect-the rate of soil leaching will effect the form of local lateritic concentrations. Although the most intense leaching generally occurs on somewhat elevated areas of gentle relief where there is a free downward flow of rain water, the- effect of local rock structures in effecting varia¬tions in soil metal concentrations has-not been well understood - primarily because the laterite forms a masking blanket over the rocks from which the laterites were derived. All of the-factors which facilitate downward movement of water may effect greater surficial concentrations of trivalent metals. Such features as zones of fracturing, zones of greater rock permeability, and areas of karst topography may, therefore, be responsible for greater leaching. The variations in rock structures and the vagaries of ground water flow pat¬terns impart, to the laterites, rapid lateral and vertical variations in thickness and metal concentrations. According to Darcy's law, the rate of filtration should increase with increasing pressure drop across a filter cake. In centrifugal filtration, the driving pressure is created by the centrifugal forces applied in the free water on the surface of a filter cake. However, the pressure drop can become negative when the free water surface disappears, which makes it difficult to achieve low cake moistures. In hyperbaric centrifugal filtration, this problem is overcome using air pressure to restore the pressure differential. In the present work, various mineral and coal fines have been subjected to hyperbaric centrifugal filtration tests. The laboratory tests show that the moistures of various mineral fines, such as copper and zinc concentrates, phosphate, talc, kaolin clay, and precipitated calcium carbonate, can be reduced substantially below that achieved by conventional centrifuges. Similar promising results have also been obtained with various coal fines in laboratory and pilot-scale test programs and in full-scale plant demonstrations.

Introduction Ventilation engineers have always felt somewhat uneasy when, in the normal course of their work, they are forced to consider the flow in any mine entry as "wholly rough." Under such conditions in pipes, friction factor is no longer a function of Reynolds' number. This assumption serves to simplify the problem and overcome an evident lack of information concerning the variability of K-factors. During the summer of 1985, a unique opportunity to investigate the reaction of friction factor to changing flow rates presented itself. A Utah coal mine was temporarily directing a substantial airflow through a single entry. By regulating the quantity, it would be possible to obtain a wide range of Reynolds' numbers in an entry composed of two distinct coal thicknesses. This paper describes the conducted study. The theory covering basic fluid flows in pipes that led to the questioning of constant K-factor is presented first. Experimental procedures are then described, including the use of a view camera in determining entry area and perimeter. Finally, a discussion of the observed variations in friction factor versus Reynolds' number is given. Changes of 34% and 45% in K-factor were seen in this study for the two entry heights. The implications of ignoring the relationship in this case and a call for an expanded research effort are also presented. Theory Since a gas is a fluid, the general principles of fluid mechanics are equally applicable to airflow in a mine entry as they are to the flow of water in a pipe. The Darcy equation is, therefore, equally applicable to pressure drop calculations in both situations. This famous formula was originally derived for use in circular cross sections and may be modified for any other shape by the use of hydraulic radius (defined as the area divided by the "wetted" perimeter). The Darcy equation relates the physical parameters of the pipe (diameter, length, and resistance to flow) and fluid velocity to the energy needed to create the flow. A study by Nikuradse (1933) brought to light the suspected dependency of the friction factor term in the Darcy equation upon Reynolds' number. By performing a large number of laboratory experiments, he established some basic concepts upon which other researchers built. Chief among these contributors was Colebrook (1939). Using commercial-grade pipe, he established an empirical relationship between Darcy's friction factor and Reynolds' number that is still in use today. If Colebrook's system of equations is plotted on log-log paper (as was done by Moody, 1944), the curves have some very distinct features. Of importance to the subject at hand is the relative response of friction factor to Reynolds' number at a given relative roughness. Simply stated, a pipe can appear to be either smooth or rough, depending on the flow conditions. As the Reynolds' number increases, the friction factor decreases at a decreasing rate until it becomes nearly a constant value. At this point, the flow is said to be "wholly rough." It is upon this condition that many traditional ventilation solution methods depend. For calculating pressure drops in a mine entry, Atkinson's equation is much more popular than the Darcy equation. Both of these formulas describe the same phenomenon and so have similar forms and functions. The K-factor in the Atkinson equation is equivalent to the Darcy friction factor and can be related by simply changing units, equating the pressure drops, and canceling like terms. A generalized form of this relationship is presented below as equation 1. K = yf/28,800g = [q]f/28,800 (1) where K is Atkinson's friction factor in kg/m3 (lb - min2/ft4), Y is the specific volume in Nt/m3 (lb per cu ft), p is the fluid density in kg/m3 (slugs per cu ft), g is the acceleration due to gravity (9.8 m/s2 or 32.2 fpsz), and f is Darcy's friction factor, which is unitless. The objective behind Eq. 1 is to show the strong correlation between K and f. Since these two quantities differ only by a constant (q]/28,000), the assumed independence of K-factor and Reynolds' number is suspect in light of the known response of f. Unfortunately, the formulation does not provide information concerning the actual relationship, as entry geometry likely plays a major role in the response curve. Only an indirect indication that such a relationship might exist is provided. Previous work on this subject was performed by Thomas Falkie (1958). The study involved a laboratory model composed of sections of straight, steel duct and a range of Reynolds' numbers from 15,610 to 137,200. Results from this work show a variation in friction factor with Reynolds' number in much the same way as it was found to vary in pipes. Over the range of velocities examined, a decrease of approximately 38% in K-factor was observed. This previous experience provides additional incentives to investigate the phenomenon under field conditions. Past model studies done at the University of Utah by Ozukurt (1945), Biron (1944), and Greenhalgh (1942) present similar evidence of this variability. Introduction Coal is the US's largest indigenous fossil fuel resource and is used to power 57% of this country's electrical generation (NCA, 1986). Congress, however, is focusing its attention on the acid rain issue and public sentiment is leaning toward further curtailments of SO2, NO, and particulates from utility and industrial coal-burning facilities. The Cool Water plant has proven that integrated-gasification-combined-cycle (IGCC) technology can reliably produce economical electrical power while limiting SO2, NOx, and particulates to a rate of only one-tenth of the federal New Source Performance Standards for coal-fired plants. Process water requirements at Cool Water are 40% less than those of a conventional coal-fired utility plant equipped with flue-gas desulfurization units for stack gas scrubbing, thus reducing waste water treatment requirements (Clark and Shorter, 1985). The IGCC technology employed at Cool Water has now been demonstrated to efficiently convert coal to electricity in an environmentally superior fashion. The Cool Water Coal Gasification Program is an unincorporated California association of six partners whose commitment is proving that the integration of gasification with combined cycle power production (IGCC) is commercially viable and environmentally safe. The 120 MW Cool Water plant began commercial production on June 24, 1984. The Program is operating it for a five-year commercial demonstration period. In our comparison of California and Turkish colemanites, we should first place the discussion in context. In order to exclude technical considerations, which are not germane to this paper, we must make the manifest and basic observation that if colemanite were not acceptable for the production of glass products it would not be used, and we would not be interested in this comparison at all. Suffice it to say that the colemanites, being calcium borates, provide a necessary flux in glass manu¬facture, together with the requisite degree of physical strength and chemical durability which can be achieved only by the use in glass of a. flux substanti¬ally free from alkali; so the sodium borates are automatically excluded from the production of textile fibers. Thus we have today under consideration only California colemanite, Turkish cole mite, and, because it provides a degree of competition to both, ABA, or anhy¬drous boric acid, which, although it is a refined intermediate and of much higher cost, it is also of a much higher degree of purity, and its characteristics can easily be modified to produce a desired end product, so we must include it in any consideration of high quality borates. [Calcim Borate Pentahydrate] Colemanite is a [calcium pentahydrate,] with the formula Ca2B6011.5H20. It has a theoretical B203 content of 50.8%.

The idea of using only one strand for both sintering and cooling of the sinter is not new. In 1952, in the U.S.A. a sintering plant was built at Benson Mine (Star Lake, N.Y.), including : - 68 m2 or 735 sqft (8 wind boxes) for sintering, - 22 m2 or 237 sqft (3 wind boxes) for cooling. In the USSR, a large number of machines have been built allowing for cooling of the sinter on the strand, especially the 4 m (about 13 ft) machines, with : 252 m2 sintering grate area 60 m2 cooling grate area 312 m2 total grate area. However, such ventures did not prove very successful, and the IRSID embarked many years ago on a research program to discover : - what are the problems associated with cooling on a sintering strand ; - what are the possible solutions for industrial plants.

This paper will describe briefly the steps taken in the development of a Central Florida phosphate ore deposit from acquisition to mining. Further, the design and early operation of the mining and beneficiation facilities will be depicted. During the 1950's, with confidence in the continually increasing requirement for phosphate fertilizer materials essential for producing food, I'. R. Grace & Cc acquired the Hookers Prairie tract containing approximately 45 million metric tons o. (50 million short ton~ of potential phosphate rock product. In 1973, at a point when the Grace captive need for rock was being greatly enlarged by a planned doubling of its Bartow phosphate chemicals plant capacity, the decision was made to expand existing phosphate rock production by building a new mine and plant. The initial annual capacity was to be 2.3 million tons (2.5 million st); however, subsequent investigation pointed to a higher than estimated dragline operating factor 'and the forecast of annual capacity was set at 2.5 million tons (2.8 million st).

In 1994, McGill University and INCO Ltd. (Sudbury operation) initiated the transfer of technology originally developed to detect levels in equipment ranging from flotation columns to thickeners. A conductivity probe was installed in a concentrate thickener to monitor the mud line and the solids load. The probe consisted of a vertical tube with 32 equally spaced electrode rings connected in pairs to give 31 conductivity cells. Conductivity was measured as a function of depth to produce a conductivity profile. From the conductivity profile, the mud line and the percent solids can be inferred. The probe was installed in October 1994, and it has been successfully detecting profiles since then. This paper includes a description of the incidents that occurred and the experiences gained during this technology-transfer process. Discussed is probe installation and startup; software modifications to accommodate both operating conditions and the needs of the operators; and calibration procedures to adjust to changes in performance as a consequence of long-term use. Also included are preliminary observations of the still-in-progress last stage, i.e., signal interpretation and use to facilitate operation, particularly by providing early reaction to upstream disturbances.

Best known for its extensive bauxite and alumina exports, Jamaica also has a small but active industrial minerals sector. The island has for many years been a net exporter of small tonnages of gypsum, metallurgical-grade limestone and marble products. As bauxite and alumina earnings have declined the government of Jamaica has made extra efforts to promote growth of overseas sales of these nonmetallics. The nearby U.S. market is a natural first choice for new exports. Overview In 1984, Jamaica quarried an estimated 3.2 million cu m of marble and fill and an additional 3.5 million cu m of sand and gravel, for use in domestic construction. These amounts are in line with the production in earlier years of the 1980s but are not a factor in the export pattern and need not be considered further. Similarly, annual production of 15 million ton of silica sand for the manufacture of glass bottles is principally consumed by the domestic market.

It is a distinguished honor for me to have this opportunity, and I am highly appreciative of this distinction. The beautiful surroundings of Gatlinburg and the pleasantness of a summer occasion are a wonderful tonic for all of us, yet they should not blind us to the seriousness of our Industry's problems No doubt, because of my past appearances before members of the Society of Mining Engineers, at which I discussed wholly scientific topics, or research in the Applied Sciences, you may be expecting me to revert to these subjects. But I intend to venture in a field that is new to me, yet old to all of us, the field of Economics.

Precious gold and silver markets support substantial activity in the search for and development of improved and unconventional ore and tailing processing methods. The need for such methods 1s strengthened by consideration of increasingly low grade and refractory ores and old tailing reserves. As background for this review of new and unconventional precious metal processing, recent USBM data (1981) show annual world gold production of about 40.8 million troy ounces. In the U.S. about half the 2.8 million ounce consumption was used for jewelry and the arts, 39 percent for industry, and 8 percent for dental purposes. World silver production in 1981 was about 365 million ounces. Domestic usage the same year was about 117 million ounces. More than $ was used for photography and 30 percent for electrical and electronics. By process, about 1 percent of U.S. production of gold came from amalgamation, 66 percent from cyanidation, 31 percent from smelting ores and concentrates, and 2 percent from placers. As for silver, about 11 percent is from cyanidation and 89 percent from smelting ores and concentrates. Evidently the search for innovative and unconventional precious metal processes must include gravity concentration, froth flotation, hydrometallurgical, and electrometallurgical methods. Although smelting processes are equally important, they largely comprise nonferrous metal technology, and are not discussed here.

"Mining makes civilization possible. It also creates socio-economic problems surrounded by sustainability controversies yet continues extraction without considering the balance and finitude of nature. Nature requires restoration of equilibrium if mining and life on earth are to continue. Mining is still practiced according to Agricola’s views and the consequences it has wrought on our planet demand we critically reexamine it from its very core, to its metrics, to its design, to its technology, to how it is taught, and to reconsider its raison d'être in 2017. This paper offers tools to new mining engineers that are required to transform and solve new challenges. The task before us is to formulate an updated core curriculum that meets the demands and realities of the 21st Century. Mining professionals must rethink and reteach how to redesign mines before shovel hits dirt, how to mine with restoration of nature figured in to the mining design. Mining needs a new extractive technology in order to transform the results of its well-known liabilities. Mining has evolved and its future must be different than its past. Our industry is capable of doing this but it needs to be shown the way. INTRODUCTION The statement that ‘mining makes civilization possible’ is of the utmost importance and has the most value to us. We can examine the past and present appropriately to see the future that we are building. Mining must be addressed in a different way that makes a positive difference and improves upon rather than continues to get the negative impacts of the past. See Fig 1. Mining creates disequilibrium in Nature by producing ore, waste, tailing, dilution of resources, toxic, and pollution to its ecosystems. What is next for mining on a limited planet? Delaying the transformation of mining is not an option to developing an updated and modern mining business-as-usual paradigm. It is hurting the essentials of living in a civilization; our livelihood is in danger to the point of unrest in nature as we generate a lot of eco-print by present mining practices. So, we are urged to eliminate this bottleneck in life by employing a different design. This way, we will have a vision on how to sustain our civilization. [1]. This new design, with input from current and future generations, will be our contribution to posterity."

What does the information age mean to mining companies? The perception of greatly increased access to information is based on modern communications through ‘smart’ fax machines and computer networks. Computer media allow us to `talk' to the President or to a sister in Australia. If we need data to help put together a mining permit, we can find that data somewhere on computer media. The vast amount of easily accessible information quickly overwhelms us. To avoid `information burnout,' we must learn to target searches and be able to discriminate between dross and information that is useful to our goals. If you watch commercial TV, you have learned to screen out most product commercials. A similar screening process must be applied to computerized information sources. You may need to sort through a lot of irrelevant information before finding the pearls you are looking for. ‘Smart’ fax machines can send information with no direct human intervention. MINES FaxBac, for example, from the US Bureau of Mines instructs you to enter four-digit numbers to have particular reports sent directly to your fax machine. Software vendors use a similar system to supply information about their products. You select an item by number, and the related brochure is faxed to your machine. To compete, the industry must maintain access to as many information sources as possible. The availability of computers and software for almost every conceivable application allows us to accomplish work faster than we ever thought possible, even as recently as 10 years ago. Most mining companies have become aware that doing geology, reserves, mine planning and other technical tasks completely by hand is much too slow. The world moves faster, drilling happens faster, mining happens faster, all related activities happen faster. We no longer have the manpower or time to keep all maps. calculations and records up to date.

The dissolution behavior of palladium powder in thiourea solutions was investigated. The variables studied were temperature, stirring speed and the concentrations of thiourea, acid and ferric ion. Palladium was found to be soluble in thiourea solutions in the presence of an oxidant such as ferric ion. The dissolution of palladium in thiourea solutions was believed to be chemical-reaction controlled, with an apparent activation energy of about 25.3 kJ/mol.

A method for estimating geotechnical rock loads for shallow cut and cover subway stations is presented. Localized geotechnical conditions lead to extreme variations in rock loading on the walls of subway structures. Actual lateral rock stress on these structures can range from near zero to over four times the vertical in-situ rock stress. The primary factors affecting the actual lateral stress are intact and rock mass mechanical properties, excavation sequence, localized tectonic conditions, and potential future adjacent structures. The authors recommend using the AASHTO code value of 65 pounds per cubic foot (10 kN/m3) during concept design, followed by numerical analysis of rock wedges and stress measurement for final design.

Ion exchange resin processes are receiving renewed attention in the mining industry for recovery;, of metals from solution. This interest has been inspired by the development of continuous countercurrent ion; exchange systems (CCIX) which are of much lower cost than the original, fixed bed contactor processes. With the countercurrent systems and new developments to process or upgrade the eluate product, ion exchange can now compete successfully with solvent extraction for treatment of uranium ores. The low concentration of U308 obtained in the CCIX strong eluate is generally upgraded by solvent extraction methods in sulfuric acid systems. Resin loadings of up to 120 grams per liter of U308, however, have been produced experimentally by recycling of eluate (HIM-IX process) and further developments may be expected in the near future. New developments in resin technology are bringing forth products of greater strength, loading capacity, selectivity and density. Densities up, to 1.35 spgr have been claimed by some suppliers. The process is not a new one and has taken years to advance to the present state of development. The earliest system to gain widespread acceptance was the resin-in-pulp system applied to uranium recovery. Ion exchange, however, later lost acceptance in favor of solvent extraction in the 1960's due to problems in resin degradation, resin contamination and resin-pulp separation, in addition to the development of improved solvent extraction reagents and techniques. The resin-in-pulp system continues to have application on high clay ores and has advanced in design. A number of other continuous ion exchange systems were also tried but never gained continued acceptance. In the current resurgence period the CCIX systems to gain acceptance were the Utah and Chem-Sep (Higgins Loop) systems. These processes are relatively simple in concept although require sophisticated controls. Fixed bed columns have also been designed into multistage systems in countercurrent operation but are not discussed in this paper. These systems remain competitive today for many applications. The most recent advancements however have been in the multistage contactors from,, which three are in current acceptance. These are the Himsley, Porter, and NIM systems. All industrial applications of these systems are relatively new, although pilot plant and in-plant development has been in progress over the last decade. Fur36ther developments should be expected in the near future.

In a recent paper we have reviewed principles and applications of measurement methods for contact angles and their hysteresis (22). In this paper we apply these methods to a system consisting of rutile, an organic liquid (benzene, decane, or dodecane) and water. Surfactant (dodecylamine hydrochloride) was used at various concentrations and various pH values.
