The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Northwest Barricade LLC (NWB) conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel fire blocking gel for use in underground coal mines to extinguish or retard the growth of a coal fire. The gel agent was subjected to controlled laboratory testing to assess its ability to delay coal ignition. It was then evaluated to determine if manual fire hose application could be used to apply the agent to mine roofs and ribs to provide a safe egress for mine rescue teams from a fire area. The gel agent was also evaluated in a water sprinkler system to determine its potential for use in conveyor belt fire suppression systems. The agent was then tested in live-fire exercises to examine its effectiveness in retarding and extinguishing a deep-seated coal fire and wood fire. Lastly, the ability of a mine rescue team to quickly and safely apply the gel agent to a mine entry during a simulated mine fire exercise was determined.

Stirred ball mill feed used for ultra-fine grinding application requires fine size separation step in order to avoid over-grinding. This paper presents the selectivity curves obtained for oil shale and complex sulfide are using 460 mesh (30 micron) Derrick vibrating screen. Interestingly, the selectivity curves generated from the experimental data were monotonic increasing selectivity for oil shale but not monotonic increasing for sulfide ore. These non-monotonic increasing selectivity curves were similar to the mechanical air separator fishhook selectivity curves described by Luckie and Austin. A 2 stage classification in series model describing the fishhook selectivity curve has been used in proposing the classification mechanism for fine vibrating screens when heterogeneous multicomponent sulfide are undergoes size separation.

The Felder ore deposit is a 5,000,000-pound uranium deposit in the South Texas Coastal Plain. It occurs in the basal sand of an Oakville Formation (Miocene) alluvial system. The host sand is a carbonate-rich arkose which contains virtually no carbonaceous debris and has been reduced by the local introduction of hydrogen sulfide. The ore lies well within the reduced zone and occurs as coffinite and uraninite that fill interstices and coat and replace grains. The overall geometric configuration of the ore is that of a winged, crescentic ore roll. Weak mineralization extends the wings of the ore roll and gives greater expression to the roll character. Departures from the shape are controlled by discontinuities in bed- ding and by proximity of the ore to the surface. Associated with the uranium is a broad halo of anomalous molybdenum. Subsidiary mineralized trends suggest a pre-existing up-dip position for the main roll. Oxidation from the surface largely destroyed this previous roll by solubilization of uranium. Uranium subsequently migrated into favorably reduced sand and reprecipitated at the present roll position.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has collected pillar and span data at 34 stone mines in 10 states to develop pillar and roof span design guidelines for underground stone mines. Pillar, floor and roof conditions each contribute significantly to the overall mine stability. The roof may be stable for a century, or it may appear to be stable but fail with little warning. Clearly, an assessment of the mine roof is critical to the safety of these operations. However, up until now, the assessment of the mine roof came primarily from exposures in roof falls or portal areas. This provides only limited information, and a more proactive approach is needed to assess changing mine conditions. A separate effort was undertaken to examine the roof structure with the use of a borescope. Numerous physical and geologic roof structures were observed with a stratascope/borehole video camera. The objective of this work was to develop a technique of assigning numerical values to features seen within the mine roof and apply those values to formulate a roof stability evaluation. Such features as changes in color, grain size, and general lithologies are readily observed. Minor structures in the rock, fossils and fractures are also readily identified. Each feature may have a variable and site-specific impact on roof quality. A number of mines were visited and a series of holes were borescoped in each mine. The features identified in the roof were classified and potential for roof damage related to each feature was assessed. A process is presented that relates the structures and their locations to provide a numerical value, or roof quality index that can be used to assess roof stability.

The construction of the continuing expansion of the Los Angeles Metro System has required the construction of eight new station structures. One contractor proposed, as a construction alternative for the support of excavation of the Hollywood/Vine Station, the use of soil-mix walls instead of the conventional soldier piles and wood lagging. Soldier piles and shotcrete or wood lagging support systems had been generally used on the other sub-way station excavations constructed to date throughout the system. Immediately east of that station and in almost exactly the same geology, the Hollywood/Western Station was being excavated at the same time using a conventional support system. This paper com-pares the performance of these two support systems in the alluvial soils of the Los Angeles Basin.

A process for the separation and recovery of cobalt and nickel was optimized for a sulfate leach solution of Indian Ocean sea nodules containing 80 g/m3 cobalt and 730 g/m3 nickel using the sodium salt of Cyanex 272 as the extractant. Extraction of both cobalt and nickel increased with an increase in equilibrium pH and extractant concentration. The extracted species with respect to cobalt appears to be CoA2.3HA. More than 99.6% extraction of cobalt was achieved using 0.04M solvent in a three-stage counter current simulation at the A:O phase ratio of 3:2. The co-extraction of nickel was about 0.6% only. Two-stage countercurrent stripping of cobalt from the loaded organic at an A:O ratio of 1: 7 resulted in a pregnant electrolyte enriched by 0.8 kg/m3, thus enabling a ten times overall enrichment of cobalt. From the cobalt free raffinate, nickel extraction was carried out using 0.25M solvent in two countercurrent stages, and the extraction showed a 99.8% recovery. Stripping of nickel from the loaded solvent was carried out at an equal phase ratio with the advance electrolyte of pH 1.75 in two countercurrent stages. The nickel stripping efficiency was found to be 98.8%. The present studies indicated that complete recovery of cobalt and nickel was possible using nine counter-current stages.

Introduction A mine characteristic curve is of great importance for both theoretical analysis and daily management of a mine ventilation network. Ventilation engineers are well acquainted with the ways of obtaining and using a mine characteristic curve that is conventionally associated only with single-fan networks. However, for a multiple-fan network, difficulty has long been recognized in defining the curve, not to mention, obtaining or using it. To extend the concept of mine characteristic curves for a multiple-fan network, a subsystem-based approach has been introduced by Wang (1992a). He defines a subsystem characteristic curve for a multiple-fan network and discusses the numerical procedure for constructing the curve. A graphical method of obtaining a subsystem characteristic curve for serial-parallel, multiple-fan networks has also been accomplished (Wang, 1992b). In spite of the maturity of the fundamental concepts related to and the numerical analysis tool for a multiple-fan ventilation network, information regarding the related laboratory tests is very scarce. To make up this gap, laboratory experiments have been done by using a two-fan experimental network. This paper presents the methodology and major findings regarding the construction and features of a subsystem characteristic curve. Characteristic curves and measurement fundamentals A characteristic curve A characteristic curve is a graphic presentation of the relationship between any two variables of a two-terminal component. It is typically defined in the form of a quantity-pressure curve for a ventilation component, which can be a single branch (airway), a fan, a regulator, a portion of a network or even a whole network. If a component is a single branch, the curve is called a branch characteristic curve. If it is a fan, then the curve is called a fan characteristic curve, and so on. Figure I illustrates the characteristic curves of some typical ventilation components. A general method for obtaining a characteristic curve from measurement is to apply an adjustable-pressure source between the two terminals of a component and measure the quantities corresponding to the different pressures. Mine characteristic curve A single-fan network can be easily divided into two ventilation components, the fan and the remaining network. The latter consists of only branches and regulators. Under this subdivision scheme, two characteristic curves can be constructed. They are the fan characteristic curve and the characteristic curve of the remaining network. The latter is referred to as the mine characteristic curve or the system characteristic curve. Although the general method for constructing a characteristic curve from measurement can be applied to obtain a mine characteristic curve, there is a shortcut for constructing the curve by introducing a mine resistance factor R. It is a constant if all of the resistance factors in the network are constant. R relates mine pressure H with quantity Q as in: H=RQ2 (1) For a given R, Eq. (1) can be directly used to plot a mine characteristic curve by assigning a series of Q values and calculating the corresponding H values. Hence a shortcut to constructing a mine characteristic curve is to measure one set of mine pressure H and quantity Q values, calculate the mine resistance factor R using Eq. (1) and then plot the curve. Subsystem characteristic curve Applying a similar scheme as is used for a single-fan system, divide a multiple-fan network into two components, a fan under consideration and the remaining network that contains all the other elements (branches, regulators and remaining fans) of the network. Merrill-Crowe is the primary process used for the concentration and purification of silver in a cyanide solution. The Langmuir Adsorption model for silver recovery in a cyanide solution was used for the study. The maximum adsorption capacity was 6.19 mmol/g for silver. This model properly adjusts the experimental results of the adsorption equilibrium with high correlation coefficients, which also favors the formation of a single layer of molecules adsorbed for the silver in the electrocoagulation- generated species. The thermodynamic parameters ΔG, ΔH, and ΔS were estimated, and it was found that the adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous. For the kinetic study, the Lagergren second-order equation was used to study the adsorption speed. To characterize the solids coming from the electrocoagulation, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were used; the results of this study suggest that silver is present in aluminite, hydroniumjarosite, and alunogen.

Treatment of refractory gold ores containing arsenic have always presented a major problem in their processing to recover the contained precious metal values. The major difficulties are concerned with lower recoveries, production of hazardous fumes, effluents and residues. Because of'these arsenic related problems, many otherwise economically attractive precious metal deposits and dumps all over the world are not exploited. In recent years, treatment processee for refractory gold ores and concentrates have been explored and a few commercial operations employing roasting or pressure leaching have resulted. Roasting has limitations due to environmental constraints related to off gases. Pressure leaching involving high temperatures (180% to 200%) and pressures (400 psi) is accompanied by high capital and operating costs. An alternate route to roasting for treating pyrite and arsenopyrite ores and concentrates ia the "lime-oxygen hydromet" process carried out at a moderate temperature (100%) and pressure (100 psi). A simplified process for treating such arsenic containing ores and concentrates utilizing low temperature and pressure oxidation is presented. This low cost treatment with compressed air and lime renders arsenic as an inert component in the residue, meeting all the requirements of the EPA Toxicity Test. The precious metal values are then extracted from the autoclaved residue by standard cyanidation. This paper discusses this new development.

Experiments conducted with limestone dusts and dolomitic marble dusts have indicated that when rock dust is wetted and subsequently dried, it becomes a solid, non-dispersible cake. However, in order to be effectively inert a coal dust explosion, rock dust must be able to disperse as individual particles to air. To counteract this, rock dust manufacturers created treated rock dusts that will resist caking after moisture exposure. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers conducted a series of laboratory-scale experiments on four base rock dusts and their treated counterparts to assess the effectiveness of various anticaking additives after being exposed tomoisture and then dried. The dusts were exposed tomoisture using humidity cabinets having a high relative humidity (99% RH) and by also exposing the rock dust bed to water through bottom wicking. The dusts were then evaluated for dispersibility after drying using the NIOSH-designed dust dispersion chamber. The anti-caking additives were different concentrations of stearic acid, oleic acid, and xylene-based surfactants. All results were compared to a reference rock dust used to conduct large-scale experiments in the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM), Fairchance, PA. When the untreated dusts were dried after exposure to moisture for 1 day, no dispersion was measured. However, rock dusts treated with anti-caking agents were readily dispersible even after exposure to moisture for 6 months. This report details the analysis and characterization of anticaking additives using the NIOSH-designed dispersion chamber and the 20-L explosion test chamber.

Mining vehicle manufacturers are developing lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery electric vehicles as an alternative to diesel-powered vehicles. In gassy underground mines, explosion-proof enclosures are commonly used to enclose electrical ignition sources to prevent propagation of an internal methane (CH4)-air explosion to a surrounding explosive atmosphere. Li-ion batteries can create pressurized explosions within sealed enclosures due to thermal runaway. Researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) measured thermal-runaway pressures of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells as a function of free space within sealed enclosures and observed an inverse power relationship. A well-confined cell produced 4260 psia (294 bar) of pressure during a thermal runaway, far exceeding minimum pressure containment specifications for conventional explosion-proof enclosures. Results indicate that adding enough free space surrounding LFP cells can reduce thermal-runaway pressures to levels below that expected for CH4-air ignitions. Measured thermal-runaway temperatures were below the minimum autoignition temperature of CH4-air.

Test work and plant operation confirmed that semiautogenous (SAG) milling is a viable option for Inco's milling rationalization project at Sudbury only if pebble crushing is included. Throughput increases more than 50% with pebble crushing incorporated into the comminution process. The finer product of high-speed pebble crushing provides further energy savings. The unconventional approach of pumping the pebble crusher product, while simplifying plant layout, has produced challenging wear problems. Inco Ltd.'s Sudbury operations are located in northeastern Ontario, Canada, about 400 km (250 miles) north of Toronto. Inco has 11 operating mines around the rim of the Sudbury basin. The mines currently produce about 11 Mt/a (12 million stpy) of ore. This ore contains pentlandite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite in mafic host rocks. The milling facilities are designed to produce 108.8 kt/a (240 million lbs/ year) of nickel as concentrate. This concentrate is further processed through Inco's smelting and refining facilities to produce nickel, copper and several other metals. Before 1991, -200 mm (-8 in.) ore was shipped to two primary mills. The Clarabelle mill had a design capacity of 29 kt/d (32,000 stpd). Frood-Stobie had a capacity of 16.3 kt/d (18,000 stpd). The flowsheets of these mills were similar. Two stages of open-circuit crushing were followed by rod milling and closed-circuit ball milling. The product from the comminution circuit, at 12% +250 mm (+65 mesh), was first passed through magnetic separators to recover magnetic pyrrhotite. It was then sent through a four-stage flotation process. The first two stages produced a high-grade copper-nickel concentrate. The final two scavenger stages produced a low-grade copper-nickel concentrate containing nonmagnetic pyrrhotite.

This report covers laboratory experiments simulating in situ copper recovery from primary sulfide ores in sulfuric acid systems pressurized with oxygen. Copper extraction and acid consumption data are correlated with temperature in the range 50-150°C and quenched pH in the range 0.25-2. Adverse changes in the chemical composition of the leach solution and the formation of gangue-mineral alteration products and secondary sulfides can severely limit the extraction of copper above 90°C. Keeping the pH below the self-buffered value of about 2 and the temperature below about 110°C produces the maximum extraction rates. Forcing the pH too low not only results in excessively high acid consumption but may also limit the extraction of copper at temperatures above 100°C.

The Jabali zinc deposit in Yemen contains at least 9.4 Mt (10.4 million st) of ore at a grade of 10.7% zinc, 2.2% lead and 77 g/t (2.2 opst) silver. The zinc occurs as smithsonite with minor hydrozincite. The Jabali ore does not produce a zinc concentrate of sufficient grade to be acceptable to a conventional zinc smelter, and it has been necessary to formulate a less-conventional development plan. This involves the construction of a mine and concentrator at Jabali and a metal production facility using a new flowsheet designed specifically for the treatment of oxide material at Yanbu, Saudi Arabia. To give the facility the necessary economies of scale, the Jabali concentrate will be supplemented by feed from other deposits, this may be either oxide or sulfide material. The paper outlines the geology and proposed mining and treatment operations at Jabali, presents the flowsheet for Yanbu and estimates preliminary costs for both operations.

Introduction Since the beginning of operations at the pellet plant at Ponta Ubu ES, Samarco Mineração SA has produced pellets for direct reduction and blast furnace processes. Of the total amount of pellets produced from 1977 through 1993, 55 % are used in the blast furnace, about 45 Mt (49.6 million st). The principal components of pellet gangue are calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, silica and alumina. They should be added in adequate quantities to guarantee the mechanical resistance of the fired pellets under blast furnace conditions. Over the years, the pellets produced by Samarco had a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8% and varying binary basicity preferably between 0.8 and 0.85. On the other hand, the increasing amount of industrial waste in siderurgical plants caused by the increase of steel production has caused some countries to put into practice methods to reduce the volume of slag produced in the blast furnace. This paper's goal is to find an alternative for decreasing the amount of slag produced in the blast furnace. It is possible to decrease pellet gangue by decreasing the silica content to about 2%, leaving the metallurgical properties and quality of pellets unaltered. For this work, Samarco pellets were used with Si02 between 2.5% and 2.8%, pellets with high silica and pellets with Si02 between 2.0% and 2.3% low silica. Both were partially fluxed by the range of varying basicity CaO/SiO2 from 0.8 to 0.95 during production. Experimental tests on pilot scale Thhis work began in January 1986 in the pilot plant (pot grate, Fig. 1) at Samarco. Its goal was to obtain preliminary data that would indicate the bybility of the project. It also formed a solid base to extend the studies in tests on an industrial scale of production for blast-furnace pellets. The pot grate is a test furnace composed of a gas burner, a combustion chamber and a grate, connected by hot air ducts. The burner is fed by a mixture of LPG and air. It reaches high temperatures through oxygen injection. The combustion chamber heats the air that comes from the turbocompressor. This hot air flows through the ducts to the grate on which the pellet samples are fired. During updraft drying, downdraft drying, preheating, firing and afterfiring, the upward and downward direction of the air flow can be controlled by valves driven by pneumatic cylinders. The pot grate indurator was fully automated in August 1989. Positive and negative pressures measurements resulting from gas passing through the pellet layer, as well as temperature readings, are recorded in graphs in relation to time for all tests. The tests depend on the various steps carried out in sequence that can influence the results of the tests. Therefore, some criteria were adopted to restrict the number of variables in the process. This was done to facilitate the results of the analysis. The pellets were composed of concentrate, bentonite, hydrated calcitic lime and metallurgical coal, all regularly used in the pellet plant. The material balance of the pellets mix was determined from the chemical analysis of the components. Table 1 shows the chemical characteristics of the concentrate and the additives used in the pilot plant and industrial tests. The basicity has a marked influence on the metallurgical properties of the pellets produced by Samarco with a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8%. However, for pellets with low silica (about 2%), it was necessary to study the variation in the parameters of quality in a wide range of basicities to deliniate with precision a scope of work. A large variety of low-silica blast-furnace pellets were produced at the pilot plant with binary basicity varying between 0.8 and 0.95. After chemical analysis, those pellets were separated into five groups of different binary basicity (0.8, 0.84, 0.87, 0.90 and 0.95). Each was then split, one part for metallurgical tests in the laboratory at Samarco and another to be evaluated in a laboratory for metallurgical tests in Germany. The King-Beaver mine of Asbestos Corporation Limited operates an open pit in the city of Thetford Mines, Quebec. The approximate loca-tion of the open pit is at Latitude 46° 02' North and Longitude 71° 20' West. The general topography is 1020 feet above sea level. Thirty-six percent of the company's scheduled asbestos ore production, for the Thetford Mines area, comes from the King-Beaver pit. The pit operates 24 hours a day, six days a week. Normal production is 10,500 tons of ore per day at a waste to ore ratio of 2 to 1. The remaining ore requirements are mined from the King-Beaver underground mine and the British-Canadian mine.

Principal factors influencing equipment selection can be grouped into five basic categories. Tonnage Requirements, Ore and Waste Loading, transporting, and ground preparation equipment are largely determined by tonnage requirements. Generally, the greater the tonnage requirements, the larger the equipment size selected. Large size equipment is appropriate for a production of about six million tons (total) per month, medium size for three mil- lion tons, and small size for one million tons or less.

The northern spur of the Bakhuis Mountains contains bauxite deposits on a dissected planation level, a region formerly indicated as the Adampada-Kabalebo area. Iron-rich laterites are ubiquitous on all more or less flat and horizontal to moderately sloping interfluves and planation levels. The known aluminous laterites and bauxites are restricted to those laterites that have relatively leucocratic and silica-poor parent rocks. The whole area is underlain by high-metamorphic Precambrian. In the northern half of the Guiana Shield at least four Cainozoic planation levels can be distinguished. The bauxite and aluminous laterite deposits are related to the oldest, Early Tertiary level. These deposits, occupying the highest positions in the present day landscape, show the destructive influence of post-laterite weathering, erosion and denud- ation; they are erosion remnants and as such are of irregular thickness, grade and shape. Consequently, exact mineable tonnages can only be determined after intensive and detailed sampling and evaluation, taking into account the latest technical and economic parameters. The bauxite potential of the region is negatively influ- enced by the complicated uplift history of the Bakhuis horst, and positively by the presence of suitable parent rock and possibly more than one phase of bauxitization.

The US Bureau of Mines has designed and evaluated total mill ventilation systems (TMVS) at two mineral-processing operations. Both systems have proven proficient at cost-effectively reducing respirable dust levels throughout the mills. An 11.8-m3/sec (25,000-cfm) system installed at a clay-processing mill provided about 10 air changes per hour(acph). This system reduced respirable dust concentrations by about 40% throughout the mill building. The second evaluation was performed at a silica sand operation. Tests were performed with 23.6 and 47.2 m3/sec(50,000 and 100,000 cfm) of ventilation to the mill building, corresponding to 17 and 34 acph. Average mill-wide respirable dust reductions were 36% and 64%, respectively. This work was done to determine general guidelines and design criteria for operations that may be interested in implementing TMVS. TMVS should be designed to draw clean make-up air in near the base of the mill. This air provides general purging and may clear some dust-laden areas throughout the mill structure. It is discharged at or near the top of the structure. Without the TMVS, dust can exit the building through open doors, windows, etc. and contaminate outside plant workers. This dust can also be recirculated back into the mill building causing additional contamination problems. TMVS is not a stand-alone system. It is a supplemental technique to assist other localized dust control systems (Mody et al.,1987).

This chapter on the square-set system of mining em¬bodies the results of a special study of the subject made as a part of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) general investigation of mining methods and costs. Data for the chapter were gathered by the authors during visits to mines using square-set mining, from information circu¬lars prepared by consulting engineers to the USBM on mining methods at individual mines, and from articles in the technical press and the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Al¬though some of the properties discussed are no longer in operation, the methods described are still valid. The square-set system of mining has been very widely applied and is one of the oldest methods in use in the US. It is mainly employed for extracting rela¬tively high-grade ore in heavy ground. It is also useful in taking out pillars left in mining by other methods. It is used to some extent as an auxiliary method with many underground systems and as an alternate with cut-and¬fill, shrinkage, and open-stope methods when heavy ground is encountered. In some cases as much as 50% of the ore may be extracted by square setting at mines listed as using some other method of mining. A large tonnage has been mined yearly by square setting, prin¬cipally in the western states. Due to the high cost of timber and the relatively low average production per manshift, this system generally is not used when the ore can be mined by some other method; it usually is adopted as a last resort. Square setting, however, has a special field in that ore bodies not minable by other methods can be stoped by this system. As square-set mining was widely known, there was a tendency for years to use the method regardless of its suitability. With the increasing need for economy and the development of other methods, square setting has been superseded in many mines by cut-and-fill, top slic¬ing, or sublevel caving methods. The term square-set mining as used in this chapter includes all stoping methods in which the space made by the removal of the ore is timbered with framed sets. The sets usually are square in horizontal section. The stope may or may not be filled with waste rock as stoping progresses. HISTORY OF THE SQUARE-SET SYSTEM Prior to 1860, open-stope methods with stulls for casual support accounted for most of the mineral pro¬duction from underground mines. Attempts to mine large ore bodies that required artificial support resulted in disastrous cave-ins and loss of life. The art of mining received a tremendous impetus following the introduc¬tion of methods for mining the bonanza ore body which was discovered in 1860 in the Ophir mine on the Comstock lode, Virginia City, NV. This ore body was phe¬nomenally rich and eventually proved to be 122 m (400 ft) high, 27 m (90 ft) wide, and 98 m (320 ft) long. The mining of this large high-grade ore body taxed the best engineering talent of the time; the problem was finally solved by Philip Deidesheimer. According to Eliot Lord (1882): "At the 50-foot level the vein of black sulphurets was only 3 or 4 feet thick, and could be readily extracted through a drift along its line, propping up the walls and roof when necessary by simple uprights and cap-posts. As the ledge descended the sulphuret vein grew broader until, at the depth of 175 feet, it was 65 feet in width, and the miners were at a loss how to proceed, for the ore was so soft and crumbling that pillars could not be used to support the roof as in coal mines. They spliced timbers together to hold up the caving ground; but these jointed props were too weak and ill-supported to with¬stand the pressure upon them, and were constantly broken and thrown out of place. The dilemma was a curious one. Surrounded by riches, they were yet un¬able to carry them off and their mass of black sulphurets bade fair to become a white elephant on their hands. The Ophir Company began to wish themselves less for¬tunate, as their miners narrowly escaped burial day after day in their attempts to stope out the ore. "A young mining engineer, Philip Deidesheimer, was in charge of a quartz mine in Georgetown, El Dorado County, Calif., in the autumn of 1860, when this serious check to the development of the lode occurred. At the request of William F. Babcock, a trustee of the Ophir Company, Mr. Deidesheimer left his California mine and crossed the mountains with a letter from the direc¬tors of the Ophir Company, authorizing him to inspect the workings of their mines and make such changes in the method of timbering as should seem to him expe¬dient. After examining the vein he designed, in the course of a few weeks, a system of timbering which proved to be exactly adapted to the requirements of the work. Experiments which he had previously made in California gravel and quartz mines furnished the out¬line of his plan. This was to frame timbers together in rectangular sets, each set being composed of a square base, placed horizontally, formed of four timbers, sills, and crosspieces from 4 to 6 feet long, surmounted at the corners by four posts from 6 to 7 feet high, and capped by a framework similar to the base. The cap pieces forming the top of any set were at the same time the sills or base of the next set above. These sets could readily be extended to any required height and over any given area, forming a series of horizontal floors, built up from the bottom sets like the successive stories of a house. The spaces between the timbers were filled with waste rock or with wooden braces, forming a solid cube when¬ever the maximum degree of firmness was desired. By adjustments of these sets the ore bodies along the line of the lode were extracted with comparative ease and security." Most mining methods are evolved slowly and are the result of the combined efforts of a number of minds; Deidesheimer's feat was remarkable in that his system was immediately successful.
