"The successful commercialization of a pressure oxidation (POX) process for recovering metal values, including gold, copper, zinc, nickel and molybdenum, is the result of a carefully planned development program. The initial task involves developing one or more conceptual flowsheets, including the POX autoclave and downstream purification and recovery steps. A laboratory program is completed to determine the technical viability of the flowsheets, define the operating parameters for each step and provide information for an initial economic assessment of the process. The process is then confirmed during a continuous pilot plant program, providing engineering design data and other information for the commercial design. A well-thought-out development program has been shown to be critical for reducing the risk of commercializing POX processes. Experiences developing POX processes for refractory gold ores and copper concentrates are briefly discussed. IntroductionPressure oxidation (POX) has become a common commercial operation for processing sulfide-bearing feedstocks. These feedstocks include gold ores and concentrates; copper concentrates; nickel concentrates and mattes; zinc concentrates; and molybdenum concentrates. Drivers for the development and commercialization of POX processes include:• The high cost for pyrometallurgical processing of sulfide ores, much of which is attributed to environmental controls.• The motivation to implement safe and more environmentally attractive alternatives for sulfide ores.• The need to process increasingly difficult ores with complex mineralogy.• Improvements made over the last 25 years in POX equipment design and experience operating commercial POX plants.Although the capital and operating costs for commercial POX processing can be high, this technology is capable of rapid oxidation of most sulfides and arsenic minerals in the feed, with little noxious gases and environmentally stable iron arsenate and other iron compounds in the POX residue (Marsden and House, 2006).In POX operations, sulfides are oxidized to either sulfates or elemental sulfur in an autoclave at elevated temperature and pressure with oxygen gas. Archean supracrustal rocks of the South Pass greenstone belt of western Wyoming have been an important source of gold and iron ore. Actual gold production statistics are incom- plete although gold production estimates for the South Pass- Atlantic City district range from a low of 2.0 Mg (70,000 oz) (Koschmann and Bergendal, 1968) to a high of 9.8 Mg (327,000 oz) (Hausel, 1980). From 1962 to 1983 iron ore was also mined from the greenstone belt and production totaled more than 91 Mt (90 million It). The supracrustal rocks of the South Pass greenstone belt occur in a tightly folded synform bounded by Late Archean granite and granodiorite. The youngest of the Archean successions has a reported Rb-Sr isochron age of 2.8 b.y. (Stuckess, et al., 1985). Metamorphism of the supracrustals increases towards the flanks of the belt and is amphibolite-grade enclosing a small island of greenschist facies rocks. The supracrustal sequence consists of metasedimentary and metaigneous rocks that are divisible into four mappable units. The metasediments include metagraywacke, quartzite, pelitic schist, banded iron formation, metaconglomerate, and graphitic schist. Metavolcanics include metabasalt, meta-andesite, and ultramafic schist. These supracrustals have been intruded by mafic sills and dikes and tonalitic stocks and dikes. Two granite plutons and associated pegmatites intrude the supracrustals in the western portion of the belt, and the supracrustals exhibit both fault and intrusive contacts with granitic batholiths along the western and eastern margins. The northeastern flank of the Archean belt is unconformably over- lain by Paleozoic sediments, and the southern portion of the belt is onlaped by Tertiary sediments.

The current interest in sulfur recovery from coal measures is indicated by a recent report prepared for the Public Health Service (1) It was noted that the concentration of pyrites to a product containing 42-48 percent sulfur should be relatively easy with present equipment. It was also pointed out that a utility potential exists for the high-grade iron concentrate which results as a by-product of the consumption of pyrites in the acid-making process. However, economics, marketing characteristics, location, transportation, pyrite levels and coal characteristics all strongly influence the feasibility of fostering industrial development of such processes. The extent of pyrite recovery and product quality is intimately related to pyrite particle size and its degree of liberation, a consideration usually given greater emphasis in metal ore preparation than in processing coals. Consequently, fine crushing to nearly 20 mesh probably will be essential for maximum practical processing. It appears that any process separating pyrites from a coal must involve a reprocessing of the normal preparation plant refuse, although some yields can be attained from certain existing operations as products from, a shaking table or a jig. Further, the existence of millions of tons of coal refuse cannot be ignored as a mined source of raw materials. The recovery of saleable products from such wastes, although untried on a large scale under current conditions, not only offers a realistic source of sulfur but also would achieve a secondary refuse with the minimal contents of substances which incite and propagate the burning of organic and inorganic combustibles. These silicate materials, thus beneficiated, also offer some potential for economic utilization. Some significant tonnages of pyrites have been produced from coal measures in the past, but the experience was, in general, not consistent with current coal preparation practice. The processes involved did not include cyclones and heavy media; nor were they carries out under the sociological environment concerned with pollution as exists today.

Electromagnetic energy emitted from electronic devices has been known to interfere with other electronic systems, hindering their ability to function properly. Mines have many electronic devices critical to the health and safety of mine workers that could be negatively affected by electromagnetic interference (EMI). To ensure that devices are electromagnetically compatible, tests must first be conducted to measure emissions and check for immunity. Standards are available across multiple industries that prescribe emission limits and test methods for electronic devices. A literature review was conducted in this study, and an overview of EMI standards in other industries is provided. Also, an example of how a standard can be applied to mining equipment is presented.

DOUG HALBE: I've decided that we're going to change tactics here and we're going to be nice to people from now on. [Co-chair makes gesture of intense disbelief; laughter] I've also decided who's not going to be a co-chair next year. [laughter] We thought we'd get a couple of experts for our next presentation: some people with a lot of experience. We've asked them to tell us some of the things that all of you operators out there might be able to apply immediately to your plant. Our next two speakers have a tremendous amount of experience, and I think you'll find what they're going to say is highly pertinent to most plants. I looked through their paper and found some things that I could have used in the plants I operated in the past. Our first speaker is Terry McNulty. A lot of you know Terry. He was with Anaconda for a number of years as director of research. He then was president of Hazen Research. I'm going to continue with our new custom of saying nice things. Terry is the guy that I call when I don't know something, and he's always got the answer. SPEAKER: Who do you work for, Doug? [laughter] DOUG HALBE: Remember that we're being nice to people here, Joe. I know that's a stretch. [laughter] TERRY McNULTY: Thank you, Doug. I'm a little bit mystified by this sudden switch of tactics just before I get to the podium. Doug's been a good friend for a lot of years so I guess I do have to be nice. I won't say anything deprecatory about him, but I would have to comment that the observations made by earlier speakers have been far too generous. [laughter] During nine years of consulting as a mineral processor and extractive metallurgist, I have often conducted audits of the performance of client's plants. Usually these audits have been ordered by the plant management in hopes of identifying opportunities for improving processing efficiency or reducing costs. As the surface reserves are being depleted, more and more stone operators are seeking underground mining options. Stability of underground openings is a major concern for the safety and productivity. This paper relates to a field study conducted at a large underground limestone mine in Central Pennsylvania. Identification of hazards leading to ground failures and assessment of roof fall risks are important in mitigating injuries. Field observations at this mine were integrated with Roof Fall Risk Index (RFRI) mapping software recently developed by West Virginia University. The system is designed to combine field study data related to geologic factors, mining-induced damages, roof profile, and ground water influx to generate RFRI maps. The mine has adopted a proactive ground control program consisting of comprehensive examination of drilling and bolting logs; precision surveying of roof and rib; accurate mapping of cutters, falls, and geologic structures; and installation of extensometers and microseismic monitoring systems. Investment of time and resources has eliminated fatalities and lost-time injuries due to ground fall. This paper presents the geologic settings, mining conditions, ground control issues along with risk management and control techniques adopted at the study mine.

The ideal entering freshman for the College of Mineral Industries possesses the necessary aptitude to complete successfully a difficult technical curriculum, has a highly developed intellectual curiosity and adequate preparation in basic mathematics, sciences, and English, is enthusiastic about pursuing a career in the mineral industries, and puts forth a good academic effort while attending Penn State. The present programs of the University?s Division of Counseling and the College of Mineral Industries are directed toward providing the College with students who will meet these requirements. At present, freshmen are admitted to the Pennsylvania State University without entrance examination if they are in the upper two-fifths of their high school classes. All Pennsylvania students in the lower three-fifths are required to take the University Aptitude Test and all out-of-state students the College Entrance Board Examinations. Such students are admitted only if they score sufficiently high on either test to indicate the ability to do satisfactorily the work of University students. Only to this extent, are native intelligence and areas of greatest aptitude known for the Freshman prior to admission, and they are, therefore, largely beyond the control of either the Division of Counseling or the College of Mineral Industries. Because all freshmen, with exceptions that are numerically minor, are required to select a curriculum before admission to Penn State, each student who presents himself for required counseling during the summer, prior to his first semester, has already made a choice of his course of study. In many instances, such choices have been made without a rational and serious consideration of the student?s abilities and interests. Through tests given between the date of admission and the date of the counselling interview, it is possible to measure these characteristics and for the Division of Counselling to advise the student of his chances of success in his chosen curriculum. If he is qualified for the curriculum he has selected, Counselling Service goes on to direct the student?s attention to those other curriculums which are in the same general area as the one he has chosen and which will also challenge his abilities and correspond to his interests, Through this counselling, the curriculums of the College of Mineral Industries, which are often less well known to high school students than others for which they are no more qualified by ability or interest, are brought to the attention of the incoming freshman.

Exposure to hand-arm vibration (HAV) among the labor force in the mining industry can result in permanent vibration diseases such as behavioral disorders, visual impairment, osteoporosis, pain (mostly in the hands, wrists, and shoulders), circulatory system disorders, and malnutrition. In this study, the vibration exposure of excavator operators working regularly in 25 different natural stone quarries was measured. In addition, the relationship between vibration exposure and rock properties was investigated. Gloved and ungloved vibration measurements were performed and revealed that antivibration gloves reduce excavator operators’ vibration exposure by 7.10–25.95%. Samples from each quarry were characterized with rock mechanics tests. The correlations between the hand-arm vibration measurements and the natural stone physical–mechanical properties (uniaxial compressive strength, Shore hardness, Knoop hardness, apparent density and total porosity) were determined to be over 70%. One finding of the study was that the health risk in excavators cannot be reduced sufficiently by the sole use of antivibration gloves. Furthermore, the excavation of any rock with a Knoop hardness above 121 is associated with an 81% risk of HAV. To increase awareness of the danger of vibration exposure for natural stone miners, training programs should be provided, and technical and operational changes should be implemented.

The United States Cement, along with other industries, is being devastated by an unprecedented penetration of domestic markets by imported products. The overriding questions are: 1. Have foreign manufacturers improved their processes to an extent they can outperform U.S. producers in their home markets? 2. Is it gross inefficiency on the part of the U.S. producers that is allowing foreign producers to be capable of replacing a local U.S. producer in his normal home market? 3. Is there a combination of the first two questions that economically justifies this type of market overrun? The answer is a simple NO!. In a fair trade market atmosphere, U.S. producers are definitely competitive.

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) uses light-scattering real-time dust monitors (nephelometers) in its research to develop dust controls to reduce respirable silica dust overexposures in miners. Recently, the model 1500-pDR, an active nephelometer (i.e., with cyclone and pump configuration), was introduced by Thermo Scientific. Testing was completed to ensure compatibility with the metal/nonmetal mine dust personal sampling unit (M/NMDPSU). Results of testing demonstrated that gravimetric concentrations measured from the 1500-pDR are comparable to the gravimetric concentrations measured using the M/NMDPSU, without need for correction, under commonly observed dust loading conditions.

Many longwall operators experience difficulty complying with the federal regulation limiting average dust exposure. Others are currently in compliance, but the dust exposure limit keeps then from increasing their production. Spray water is a major means of dust control. Excess water can cause problems in the transportation system and the cleaning plant, and reduces the Btu value of the run of mine coal. Thus, the dust exposure reduction per unit of water sprayed must be maximized. This paper discusses underground tests recently completed as part of a Bureau of Mines research program to determine the effects of variations in spray water flow rate, pressure, proportioning and spray orientation on longwall shearers.

In 1963, a major expansion program at Kennecott's Bingham Canyon mine converted rail operation in the upper portion of the pit to truck haulage. Since that time truck-haulage capacity has increased to about 272 000 Mg (300,000 tons) per day. The majority of this production is waste material which is deposited in monolithic dumps located on the eastern slopes of the Oquirrh Mountains. The largest of these dumps, referred to as Copper Notch and Keystone, measures approximately 1830 m (6000 ft) in length, from 180 to 300 m (600 to 1000 ft) in height, and contains some 430 Tg (470 mil lion tons) of waste. The height, structure, rapid rate of growth, and anticipated leaching suggested the possibility of dump failure. In order to evaluate this possibility, an outside consulting firm was retained in 1966 to investigate the stability of the growing dumps. Their investigation indicated that, other than superficial movement, the waste dumps would be stable under static loading, and that soil distribution was not continuous enough to sustain massive foundation failure. Since this investigation, however, several failure processes have been observed. Crest settlement occurs frequently in response to compaction and over-steepening in the upper portion of the dump surface. Over-steepening results from accumulation of fines near the crest caused by natural segregation. Normally, coarse material, near the base of the dump, exhibits an angle of repose near 0.65 rad (37"). The fine material, however, stands as steep as 0.75 rad (40"). Periodic equilibrium adjustments cause stepwise settlement (Figure 1) of the dump surface and occasional sloughing of the protective berm. Routine surface preparation by dozers and graders and frequent inspections by supervisory personnel have proven adequate in preventing problems associated with this form of crest instability.

Three dimensional photoelastic techniques have been developed which provide information on the state of stress at any point in a model investigated. This investigation utilizes these techniques to determine the stress distributions in the pillars and the roof of a room and pillar mine model. Castolite plastic was used for the construction of the model in which a stress pattern was developed by the stress freezing process. Analysis of the stress pattern was accomplished by use of data obtained by observing points in slices from the model with a polariscope and solving data obtained by' the shear-difference method. Slices through the centerline, edge of pillar and centerline of span were investigated. Results of this work provide information on the overall stress distribution on points of stress concentration in compression, shear and tension, show relative magnitude of stress throughout the model and indicate directions of the most important stress values. A generalized roof bolt pattern is developed for room and pillar mines based on the stress distribution. A digital computer was used in the reduction of data and proved to be extremely useful for investigation of this type.

"The mining industry tends to focus on very large numbers, whether it’s talking in terms of size of deposits, tons of material mined, the equipment used or the dollars spent. The numbers associated with mining projects are often in the hundreds of millions, but sometimes it’s the little things that can have the biggest impact.Take, for example, the Rosemont Copper Project in Arizona. Owned by HudBay Minerals, the Rosemont Copper project, when in production, is expected to be one of the largest copper mines in the United States, accounting for about 10 percent of total copper production with annual production expected to be 110 Mt/a (243 million lbs/year). However, the project is currently mired in a years-long permitting process. At the 2017 SME Arizona Conference in Tucson, AZ, Kathy Arnold, director of environmental and regulatory affairs for Hudbay Minerals, spoke about the project and the efforts to get it into production.She opened her presentation with the unfortunate news that her 2017 presentation would not be that much different than the 2016, 2015 or 2014 presentations she gave to the same conference. That’s because, as of Dec. 4, 2017, the project had been in the permitting process for 3,797 days, more than 10 years. The process began when Rosemont submitted its initial mine plan in 2006 and a revised one in 2017. The official start to Rosemont Copper’s National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) started in 2008.In June 2017, the project received its Final Record of Decision from the U.S. Forest Service, moving it a step closer to production. Yet it still faces stiff opposition from opponents while it works to secure the Clean Water Act Permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and to complete its final mine plan of operations.In her presentation, Arnold said the long process taught her many lessons, including approaching things with a different mindset. More than 130 pages worth of public comments have been collected over the years. The concerns expressed range from lighting issues to pavement to preserving land for a jaguar that was spotted on the property and named El Jefe.“A lot of things that people worry about seem to be small things, but we had to have a different mindset and be open-minded to the concerns,” Arnold said. “That is the commitment we made.”"

"INTRODUCTION Tunneling and underground excavation is related to handling of uncertainties, risks associated with geological conditions are significant and ‘unexpected geological conditions’ often claimed. This fact was brought to the table long ago, and ITA (the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association) published its 25 Recommendations on Contractual Sharing of Risks in 1988 (Ref. 1). This public-cation constitutes an important asset to the tunneling industry in terms of being a guideline for those working with contractual issues, even today almost 30 years after being published. A more recent document is the ITIG code of practice for risk management of tunnel works from 2015 (Ref. 9). Various countries or geographical regions have their own view and tradition on risk sharing and tunnel contracts. In Scandinavia unit rates contracts are most commonly used with bid-build model, it shares risk between owner and contractor, owner retains the risk for geological conditions while contractor carries risk for performance efficiency. Rock strengthening is determined assessing rock mass quality encountered at tunnel face. Grouting is applied to stem water. Actual quantities may differ from the contract’s BoQ but a flexible contract with remuneration is installed to enable adjustment of actual quantities. Variations of quantities involve a clause to adjust construction time. Unit price contracts deals with expected and foreseen still ‘unexpected geological conditions’, if the ‘unexpected’ element results in variations in quantities. Work activities have quantities and ‘standard capacities’ for regulation of construction time. Variations in quantities are expected in tunnelling and hardly deserve the term ‘unexpected’. If truly unforeseen geological features necessitate work not included in the BoQ, then the contract must be supplemented and can be said to be inappropriate. Fixed price contracts may not provide the intended predictable cost and is as such also inappropriate in the view of a risk sharing principle, once the geological baseline proves to be incorrect. ‘Adjustable fixed price’ contracts, combining unit rate and fixed price, may prove suitable."

INTRODUCTION This paper traces the application of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) at industrial and pilot scale in Australia. The Argyle Diamond Mine installed the first of two smooth segmented HPGRs during 1990 in an open-circuit secondary-tertiary crushing application to increase throughput. In 2002 a third HPGR was added to improve liberation and so increase the recovery of smaller diamonds. The latest improvements in wear technology (tyre with tungsten carbide studs) were incorporated in the design of this machine. Extensive HPGR pilot-plant trials were undertaken during the 1990s at both the Kalgoorlie Consolidate Gold Mine and the Boddington Gold Mine. The purpose of these trials was to evaluate HPGR as a method to increase throughput, as an alternative to SAG milling, and also to ascertain if downstream benefits existed. One of the challenges for HPGR circuit designers is to translate what occurs at small laboratory and pilot scale into what is likely to happen in a full-scale circuit. Scale-up from pilot machine results is normally recommended by manufacturers. However, such tests need relatively large quantities of material, particularly if meaningful data on wear are to be obtained. Laboratory tests are preferable, as they need relatively small quantities of ore, but may be questioned in terms of how they relate to full-scale operation. Modelling and simulation have played a particularly important role in this respect in Australia. Models are available which have proven to be very accurate at being able to scale throughput and specific energy response from laboratory to industrial machines. More recently, work in Australia has also been done in developing a model which has the potential to scale laboratory wear data as well.

Effective and profitable mining begins with good blasting results. While the importance of sufficient energy to break the rock is recognized, more attention should be paid to the time factor in blasting. Fragmentation, looseness and the shape of the muckpile can be improved and energy levels lowered through the use of proper delays. The long delay is also the most important parameter in establishing stable walls along the final limits of the pit. The time factor in blasting is explained through the rock acceleration process and its practical application is demonstrated by case histories.

The productivity and fuel efficiency of iron-ore blast furnace operations has greatly increased in recent times. These improvements, particularly to the Japanese steel industry, have primarily arisen from process engineering studies of the blast furnace and associated operations such as sintering. The development of fluxed sinter based on iron-ore fines reacted to produce highly reducible, low slag sinters has contributed further to a reduction in fuel requirements. The Pilbara province of Western Australia is a significant source of these iron-ore fines supplied to the international market. Increasingly, this market is being offered high quality ores from other foreign sources. To technically assist companies in improving the processing efficiency of ores, and to improve the technical marketing of ores by modelling the processing characteristics of Australian/international ore blends, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) is actively assisting the industry by researching the general theme of 'iron ore from mine to metal in this paper we outline progress towards a numerical description of: a. ore deposit classification. b. Degradation during transport. c. Direct reduction of iron ore. d. Liquid bath ore reduction/smelting. e. Industrial sintering.
