Microscopic evaluation of trace quantities of metalliferous phases in flotation products requires counting large numbers of particles. Particle counts of many thousands may be required for precision, but not obtained practically by conventional microscopic techniques. A less tedious microscopic method for evaluating trace sulfides in mill tailings was developed for the O'okiep Mining Company in South Africa. Hundreds of thousands of particles were evaluated by this method called "gross-counting." Gross-counting consists of counting microscopic fields rather than point-counting individual particles. Total counts are calculated by multiplying the average number of particles per field by the total number of fields examined over the entire mount. Total gross-counts range from about 20,000 particles for +200 to 100,000 or more for -400 mesh size material in lucite mounts. Sulfides and metallic particles in each field are identified and tallied along with field counts. Totals for each type of metallic particle are divided by the total gross-count to give volume percent which is corrected to weight percent by specific gravity factors.

Faced with decreasing production from the gold heap leach operation, Robinson implemented a drilling and blasting program on the leach pads in 1993. This program offset some of the negative effects of low ore permeability and short circuiting of leach solution that resulted in lower than optimum recoveries. The drilling and blasting program created new solution flow paths and increased gold recovery. Production and pulp assays at depth intervals, prior to and following drilling and blasting, reveal the degree of short circuiting and benefits of the program.

The cleaning of coal by the use of jigs is one of the oldest methods of separating coal from its impurities. Although in many situations jigs have been replaced by other methods, by far the largest percentage of coal today is still being cleaned by some form of jigs. Some piston- or plunger-type jigs are still in use throughout the world; however, the greater number are air pulsated, generally called the Baum jig, named after the original inventor, Fritz Baum of Germany. This standard jig, with slight modifications, has been in use for over 75 years. Up until recently, however, it has had certain limitations in obtaining the high performance and efficiencies required in modern coal preparation practice. TO improve its performance, some radical modifications have been made in its design and operation SO that there is now a Baum-type jig giving much higher performance in terms of capacity, efficiency and sharpness of separation- This new jig is called the Batac, and the purpose of this paper is to describe its characteristics and present data giving its performance in treating coarse and fine sizes of coal.

The level of steel consumption per capita is one of the principal indicators of a country's standard of living. It is no coincidence that the materially advanced nations possess viable iron and steel industries to provide a reliable and economic source of steal for the manufacturing industries. No other metal is as dominantly important in manufacturing as steel. The blast furnace - steel furnace complex based on coking coal, ferrous scrap and iron ore - continues to be the principal steel-producing method. Less important is the electric furnace method based on scrap, In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the many direct reduction processes that are not dependent on coking coal but usually produce a product for further refining in steel furnaces. No matter which series of processes are used, iron ore is essentially the only source of virgin iron units. Thus, to such a vital and capital-intense industry as steel, access to a relatively inexpensive, long- term supply of iron ore is essential.

Adequate ventilation of coal mine working faces is the single most important technique for controlling respirable dust and methane. Choosing the right technique presents some tough questions. Bureau research has shown that to control respirable dust you must contain the dust near the face, keeping rollback (turbulence) to a minimum. For methane the most effective approach has been to use a blowing brattice or tubing and to create turbulence and disperse the face methane, allowing it to pass over the machine and into the return. It is immediately apparent that the two approaches may counteract one another, thus complicating the decision as to which system may be best for a given situation. At present, Bureau research has developed two successful machine-mounted face ventilation systems to meet these different needs and allow deeper cutting. The fan-powered dust scrubber is designed to control dust primarily associated with blowing face ventilation systems. The spray fan controls methane on exhaust-ventilated sections.

Small-scale flotation tests have been conducted to examine the effect of froth stability on the column flotation of finely pulverized coal. The results of this study demonstrate that the upgrading of coal in a column flotation cell can be significantly improved when froth stability is properly controlled through the manipulation of appropriate operating variables. Several important correlations have been established from the test data. These relationships should prove useful for the design and ore ration of column flotation cells for fine coal processing.

INTRODUCTION The decontamination of the former Shiprock uranium millsite and the interim stabilization of its tailings piles began in March 1974, and ended in June 1978. Personnel monitoring for whole body gamma ray exposure was conducted for selected individuals working at the mill site throughout most of this period. The millsite and exposure conditions are briefly described to develop a basis for interpretation of the exposure data. Millsite The Shiprock uranium millsite is located in the community of Shiprock, New Mexico on a bench overlooking the San Juan River (Figure 1). Both Shiprock and the millsite are located on the Navajo Indian Reservation. About 1.5 million tons of tailings were produced on the millsite during its operation from 1954 to 1963. The tailings were pulped with waste process fluids and water, and discharged to form two tailings piles. The piles (ponds, dams) were formed with earth starter dikes and the dikes were then raised using the separated sand fraction of the tailings. The slime fraction of the tailings were discharged into the diked impoundment. The mill was shut down and partially dismantled before the lease expired in 1973, and the remainder of the mill and tailings reverted back to the Navajo Tribe which was the lessor. Portions of the millsite were then occupied by the Navajo Engineering and Construction Authority (NECA), a tribal enterprise. In addition to its regular activities, NECA established an on-site training school for heavy equipment operators. The trainees principally used the south tailings pile as a practice area and spread the tailings into a 10 hectare row of raffinate ponds located along the southwest side of the millsite. Overall, the training activities inceased the effective area of the tailings piles from 20 to 35 hectares. Another 56 hectares were contaminated with wind and water eroded tailings. Exposure Conditions Persons decontaminating a millsite may be subject to radiation exposures from several sources. Only whole body gamma exposures are discussed in this report. These exposures are arbitrarily divided into three levels: high, intermediate, and low. The levels are related to areas in which the decontamination work was being done and have no connotation concerning imminent hazards. High exposures would result when persons were working with raw tailings, and intermediate exposures would occur when persons were working in the ore storage and mill yards. Low exposures would result from working in areas where surface contamination exists from wind and water erosion. [ ] The millsite and its contaminated environs were divided into major areas to facilitate the decontamination work (Figure 2). "One of the major problems discussed over the last years is a possibility of mining of seafloor massive sulfide deposits. In spite of the pessimistic points of view on their commercial development, they are still of great interest and continue to be studied (Hannington et al., 2011). Recently, Barriga (2012) paid special attention to the underestimated amount of massive sulfide hydrothermal fields and pointed to the importance of the buried fields and subseafloor mineralization.This study examines the geochemistry of seafloor and subseafloor precipitates collected at the Peterburgskoe (19°52´ N) and Irinovskoe (13°20´ N) hydrothermal fields (MAR) during the 34th cruise of the R/V Professor Logatchev in 2011. These fields were discovered by the Polar Marine Geosurvey Expedition in 2010 and 2011, respectively (Shilov et al., 2011; Beltenev et al., 2012). The Peterburgskoe field, associated with basalts, is located 16 km west of the main rift valley at the depth of 2800-3100 m at the junction of a large non-transform discontinuity with the second rift ridge parallel to the rift valley. The Irinovskoe field occurs at depths of 2700-2850 m and has a northwestern satellite sulfide site, both confined to an oceanic core complex (MacLeod et al., 2009), which includes mafic and ultramafic rocks. The details of geological structure of the fields may be found in the relevant papers.Diverse samples were collected from the hydrothermal fields: seafloor massive sulfides, Fe-hydroxide crusts, SiO2-rich sulfide-bearing precipitates, and subseafloor mineralized rocks (Melekestseva et al., 2014a). Massive sulfides may be subdivided on the Fe-rich and Cu-rich types. The marcasite-pyrite, pyrite, hydroxide-marcasite, and chalcopyrite-pyrite (Fe-rich) mineral types are dominant in the Peterburgskoe field at lesser amounts of sphalerite-hydroxide-chalcopyrite and pyrite-covellite-chalcopyrite (Cu-rich) massive sulfides. The mineralized sulfide-talc-carbonate-chlorite, chlorite-sulfide-quartz, and hematite-sulfide-quartz rocks host stringer-disseminated sulfides including chalcopyrite, covellite, and pyrite."

Concrete pipes and small boxes have been installed by the jacking method. This paper will describe a recent project were large concrete boxes were installed by the jacking method. This project is in the city of Boston, MA. By now everyone in the USA knows something about this project. The project official name is The Central Artery/Tunnel Project (CA/T). This is the biggest public work project in the USA right now, with an estimated construction cost of 14 billions. The main objective of the CA/T project is to replace an existing artery built in the 1950s to increase capacity and safety. One section of the new artery will cross under several railroad tracks near the South Station. To construct the section of the new artery under these tracks, big concrete boxes were installed by the jacking method. The jacking method can be used to install pipes, small concrete boxes, and the CA/T project has demonstrated that big concrete road tunnel boxes can be installed by jacking.

This paper presents an overview of surface mining activity in the Canadian oil sands and how the mine operators interact with the province of Alberta's Mine Financial Security Program (MFSP), which took effect April 1, 2011. The MFSP approach to reclamation assurance results in the government of Alberta sharing a portion of reclamation liability through the majority of an oil sand mine's life. In order to determine the potential fiscal magnitude of this shared liability, an examination of the expected costs of oil sands reclamation activities through a study of corporate asset retirement obligation (ARO) liabilities and other corporate disclosures is presented. The province of Alberta's Environmental Protection Security Fund (EPSF), which formerly secured oil sands mine reclamation activities is discussed. Reclamation costs in the oil sands are poorly understood. The MFSP provides what it characterizes as a conservative estimate of C$75,000/ha, while corporate disclosures by Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. place expected costs at C$180,000/ha. There is significant risk associated with the apparent uncertainty surrounding reclamation costs.

The Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration held the first MPD Student Video Contest during the spring of 2021. The event showcased the work of 18 graduate and undergraduate students from several U.S. and international institutions. The contest began in January when students submitted a onepage abstract for judging. Over the next several months, they developed a three-minute video that further explained their research findings. Both the abstract and video were evaluated by a panel of judges, and the top-placing participant was recognized at an MPD virtual event held on June 10.

The Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) operates the largest regional water authority in the State of Michigan. Two of the tunnels supplying raw water to the system from the Detroit River are the Springwells and Northeast Tunnels. The existing 70- to 90-year old concrete lined tunnels have experienced distress and cracking over their life requiring non-structural repairs to sections of the tunnels. For the repair, an interior stainless-steel segmental liner plate system has been designed to restore the watertight capacity of the tunnel liner and resist the exterior hydrostatic groundwater pressure in a dewatered condition. The team is utilizing a “wet repair” approach to perform the necessary repairs while the tunnel remains fully flooded and operational. To test and validate the tunnel repair approach, a full-scale mock-up of the proposed repair has been performed using underwater equipment and divers.

INTRODUCTION Technologic progress depends on new and innovative ideas, the practical application of these ideas, and finally as the technology is developed and demonstrated, the engineering improvement or replacement of existing capabilities. In many areas the new ideas, although known, are not immediately put to practical use in all applicable fields. Good technologic forecasting for research and development within the excavation field coupled with adequate technology transfer is necessary to ensure timely application of innovative ideas to remove bottlenecks in the total system. The purposes of this paper are (1) to show the potential ability of technologic forecasting to meet future demands in rapid excavation through the acceleration of excavation rates by research and development in several related technologic fields, (2) to provide a brief review of the initial development of the ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) Rock Mechanics and Rapid Excavation Program, (3) to draw attention to the research projects completed or underway in the FY 1970-1972 ARPA program and explain where information or program results can be obtained, (4) to summarize the progress and accomplishments of applied research contracts in the rock disintegration element of the ARPA program, and (5) to discuss the research directions planned for the remaining years of the program. Despite the seeming benefits decoupling pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals present in practice, little success has been achieved. The present study presents possible process routes for attaining selective flotation broadly capitalizing on differential oxidation between these minerals, and the use of a chelating collectors. The best performance was achieved with dithionocarbamate application following copper activation, yielding 81.4% arsenopyrite and 37% pyrite recovery. Preaeration followed by staged addition of xanthate produced 76% arsenopyrite and 31% pyrite recovery while reverse flotation of pyrite after H2O2 addition gave rise to rejection of 66% pyrite accompanied with 24% arsenopyrite.

The use of standard dense-media cyclones is well known, as they have been in use for many years. They are especially well suited for operating at low separating densities and for treating difficult coals containing a high percentage of near-gravity at the point of separation. Very few modifications of the basic design have ever been made. The author recently, however, has been interested in the development of a new type of dense-media cyclone that has been produced in Japan. He has observed the testing of this unit and has collected much data which he feels should be of considerable interest to coal preparation engineers. He feels that this unit, called the Swirl Cyclone, may be of substantial value as an alternate to the standard cyclones. It is certainly worthy of further investigation. There has been relatively little written in English-language publications on the Swirl Cyclone. It was briefly described at the Fifth International Coal Preparation Congress. I It has been described in a general manner by the author in two prior publications. 2, 3 This paper proposes to describe this device in more detail and at the same time submit technical data illustrating its wide characteristics.

The use of finite element programs for evaluating large grinding mill shells is becoming increasingly popular. However, large scale, detailed analysis can become a burdensome task when one is required to manually prepare the necessary data to be entered into the program, while evaluating the voluminous results is even more devastating. Although available computerized finite element analyses can reduce computation time from years to months or even weeks, additional pre and post processors can reduce the time for data preparation and result evaluation to hours, while simultaneously reducing the probability of human error. Examples of the uses of these processors are presented as well as typical modeling techniques.

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the former U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) have put significant effort over the past four decades into researching and developing engineering controls and interventions to reduce mine workers’ dust exposures during the bagging and palletizing of industrial minerals. Workers who perform the manual bagging and palletizing of 50- to 100-lb bags typically have some of the highest dust exposures of all workers at mining and mineral processing operations. This paper provides an overview of available dust control technologies for bagging operations and presents the findings of a recent case study conducted at four industrial sand operations to identify the current types of bagging and palletizing technologies being used and to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing workers’ exposures to respirable crystalline silica dust. An evaluation is also performed to determine if further reductions in respirable dust levels can be achieved by incorporating additional modifications or improvements into the existing technology.

Lifelines in seismic regions of the world seldom can escape crossing active faults. Cities in California have been mitigating this risk by constructing improved fault crossings. This paper discusses the analyses and design of the lining for a tunnel carrying a water conveyance pipeline through a fault that can potentially displace during a major earthquake event. The paper presents expected fault displacement, fault width and orientation respective to the tunnel, characterization of the ground surrounding the tunnel and its interaction with the lining, and performance required of the lining. Several other fault crossings will also be presented and discussed

"1. THE VICTORIA STATION TRANSPORT HUB Victoria Underground station is part of the Victoria transport hub, which comprises one of London’s main train termini and a major bus station. At the Underground station, the District Line running in the older shallow brick tunnels dating back to 1868 cross the Victoria Line running in the lower tunnels, which were opened in 1969. After Waterloo, Oxford Circus and King’s Cross/St. Pancras Tube stations, Victoria is the most frequented station on the London Underground network and is used by over 80 million passengers per year. Capacity at Victoria Tube station has been inadequate for many years with passenger numbers steadily rising. Overcrowding is a constant challenge and the station has to be closed regularly during morning and evening peaks until sufficient trains pass through to clear the platforms. For this reason an extension has been debated since the 1990s. After intensive preliminary investigations and feasibility studies covering many variants, which included a large-scale jet grouting test to determine the applicability of this technology as a protective measure for the tunnelling works, the project was officially started with the Victoria Station Transport and Works Act Order (Secretary of State, 2009) effective on the 18th of September 2009. Following a competitive tender process a joint venture of Taylor Woodrow and BAM Nuttall were awarded the contract by London Underground, with their design being carried out by Mott MacDonald Ltd. Ensuring the busy station remained open to the public was a key requirement of the Victoria Station Upgrade. Jet grouting works, which were executed from ground surface, were also carried out while the station was fully operational 2. OVERVIEW The Victoria Station Upgrade aims to increase the capacity of the Underground station significantly and one of its major design objectives is to optimise the transfer between the Underground lines. In order to achieve this, the following new structures are currently under construction: •,A new North Ticket Hall •,Extension of the existing South Ticket Hall •,Nine new escalators •,Connecting tunnels between the North and the South Ticket Hall •,8 new lifts providing step free access to all platforms •,An improved connection between the rail/bus terminus and the Underground station As the elevation and geometry of the existing structures cannot be changed, the new structures need to be adapted to the existing structures (see Figure 1)."

The objective of blending materials in a bedding pile is to reduce the variation in successive samples taken from the materials to be blended. In designing a bedding and reclaiming operation, several mechanisms are available to effect the reduction of variability, or increase in homogeneity, of the materials. These mechanisms can act before stacking, in the stacking process, in reclaiming and after reclaiming. In evaluating alternative methods of stacking and reclaiming, the potential user must judge each method on the basis of certain criteria; the capital cost of the equipment, the allowable absolute variability of the reclaimed product and the effectiveness of blending. Several stacking and reclaiming methods have been tested using a computer simulation. Based on the results of this program, factors were developed to describe the effectiveness of blending for chevron stacking of discrete materials and preblended materials, bucket wheel reclaiming and drum reclaiming. From these factors, the total effectiveness of a combined stacking and reclaiming system can be determined.
