The viability of physico-chemical purification methods such as selective flocculation for separation of two components having similar chemical composition and same crystal structure but different surface properties is demonstrated. Loss of selectivity was observed in a dolomite-dolomite mixture with Polyethylene Oxide (5 million molecular weight) as the flocculant. Hetero-flocculation was minimized using a low molecular weight PEO (MW -105) as the site blocking agent (SBA). Near complete separation was achieved at pH 10.5 at 100% recovery level.

Placement of coal combustion byproducts into abandoned sections of underground coal mines for the purpose of subsidence mitigation has been investigated in Illinois. Several handling and transportation systems have been examined. Prototype pneumatic and hydraulic placement systems have been developed and demonstrated. The demonstration site, Peabody No. 10 mine in Pawnee Illinois, is selected as a case study. It is found that, for a project of 5 years, transporting 150,000 tons of byproduct annually from a power plant located 32 km (20 miles) to the mine would cost $1.80 per ton and placement into underground would cost $3.07 per ton.

1. INTRODUCTION According to the classical economic approach of the open market economy, copper supply should be regulated by market forces which are (a) demand and (b) prices. In fact, demand is of primordial importance because prices are a reflection of supply-demand balance: they go up in times of shortages of supply and down when over-supply situation exists. In the past few years, this basic mechanism of market economy has been under pressure from a number of non-market forces, such as social and monetary problems of sane important copper producing countries; structural changes in copper mining companies through mergers with oil companies; and other factors which greatly contributed to distortion of the basic supply-¬demand equation. As a result, we have faced in the last three years a situation of oversupply rarely seen in the past, with a catastrophic fall in copper prices, huge losses at mines and unprecedented indebtedness of copper producers. This has deep repercussions in the copper business and its future supply outlook. This is particularly so when taking into consideration that high indebtedness and high interest rates conspire against the very survival of some traditional producers. As we write this comment (July of 1985), close to one half of U.S. copper production capacity is closed down, sane of it for good, while the same precarious situation exists in Canada, Australia, Zambia, and some other primary producers who cannot face present low prices with equally low costs. The question is then what this situation means for the medium-¬term future, until the end of this decade, Particularly when taking into consideration the fact that some of the factors influencing it are of a long-term character. 2. SUPPLY-DEMAND SITUATION IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS Since the last boon year, in 1979, when world copper consumption reached a record of 9.8 million metric tons of refined copper, demand dropped to only 9.0 million tons in 1982, when the crisis bottomed out, and then steadily recovered to the level of 9.7 million tons in 1984. Meanwhile, copper production, which in 1979 was only 9.4 million tons, in spite of the fall in demand, grew to 9.7 million tons in 1981 and 1983 and only temporarily was cut to 9.4 million tons in 1982 and to 9.5 million tons in 1984. As a result of this imbalance, hugh copper stocks were accumulated with supply systematically out¬growing demand by over 2 million tons at one time. With the Western World refined copper demand running at an average of 115,000 tons per week, this oversupply was equivalent to between 15 and 18 weeks production, i.e. twice as large as normal. This was immediately reflected in very low copper prices. Another contributing factor to relatively low copper prices was the lack of speculator interest for this commodity. Between 1981 and 1984 the world experienced a very intensive period of wealth distribution, high interest rates and intensive restructuring off world economy and its industrial sector. Therefore, much of the available money was attracted to more lucrative and attractive investments rather than to the lack-luster performance of copper, and for that matter, of the metal sector in general. The much announced and discussed recovery of the U.S. economy since 1983, and particularly in 1984, with an overall growth of the GNP by 6.8% in 1984, happened to be more oriented to the service sector than the industrial sector and therefore this recovery was not adequately reflected in copper consumption nor to metals in general. This put serious doubts about the future demand for copper. Consequently copper prices failed to improve in spite of an apparent fall in stocks and a healthy increase in the demand for copper since 1982. At the time of this writing (July, 1985), although same analysts claim that the available stocks are running at about 8 weeks of supply, which are considered to be below normal, copper prices are still very low at between 65 and 67 cents per pound of copper. Little knowledge is available that considers the effects of continuous miner position on the possible respirable dust exposure of the remote mining machine operator. Such information could be very useful for increasing the awareness of the remote operator as to those parts of an extended cut that generate higher levels of respirable dust. This data could be used to develop guidelines for positioning the remote operator to reduce his potential exposure. This work details the effects of continuous miner position on dust levels measured on the machine and at the remote continuous miner operator location.

Coal preparation is based on the properties of noncombustable materials (impurities) in coal being different from the organic constituents. The most commonly used property difference is density, via its affect on settling rates; and either gravitational or centrifugal forces can be used to remove impurities. However, examination of various particles settling rate correlations shows that at smaller sizes, particle drag becomes a very important factor. Classification, based on differential settling rates, becomes impractical and some property other than density must provide the basis for fine coal cleaning. Froth flotation and agglomeration employ differences in surface properties to clean coal. These methods are very successful except that the oxidized surface of a pyrite particle is somewhat hydrophobic and will tend to be collected with the organic portion of the coal. Surface property cleaning techniques have not been very effective in rejecting sulfur, except for two-stage flotation.

Feeders are used to provide a means of control for the withdrawal of bulk materials from storage units, such as bins, bunkers, silos and hoppers. This control function can only be performed properly as long as the bulk materials flow by gravity to the feeder in a uniform and uninterrupted fashion. A feeder can do many things, but it should never be considered a suction pump: During the past few years various papers have been written and presented on feeders and their application. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9)* It is not the intent of this paper to cover the same ground, and the readers are therefore ad¬vised to consult the referenced publications for supplementary information. This paper will be confined to some specific design criteria of bin feeders, such as feeder load and power requirements. Special attention is given to the basic design criteria of vibratory feeders.

The personal dust monitor (PDM) is a combined tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) respirable dust monitor and cap lamp, configured to have dimensions and weight similar to those of a lead-acid miner’s cap lamp battery. The Higgins-Dewell (HD) cyclone design operated at 2.2 L min-1 airflow has previously been reported to have low bias relative to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) convention. Previous reports have described the PDM as meeting the NIOSH Accuracy Criterion. In order to avoid certain analysis anomalies encountered during these evaluations, a different method of establishing the PDM relative standard deviation was employed. Re-analysis of laboratory data for both the early prototype and precommercial PDMs indicates that the PDM still meets the NIOSH accuracy criterion, and that the precommercial PDMs are more accurate than previously reported.

Natural materials can be used successfully in the construction of heap leach pads. The use of these materials usually result in the least expensive approach for such facilities. Sufficient geotechnical experience has been gained in the design and construction of clay heap leach pads so that they can be used with confidence. A number of operators presently use clay pads in their heap leach facilities; these include Alligator Ridge, Ely, Nevada (gold), and Union Carbide, Gas Hills, Wyoming (uranium). This paper describes the construction and field investigation of a clay pad for the heap leaching of agglomerated precious tailings. The project is located in the Mojave Desert, Southern California. The design had to satisfy operational requirements as well as regulatory requirements. The California Water Quality Control Board (WQCB) was one of the agencies which had to issue a permit for the project. Their biggest concern was the discharge or escape of cyanide into the environment. Rather stringent requirements were therefore placed on the pad design criteria, especially in terms of permeability.

Regulations on sulfur emissions have caused the electric utilities to evaluate various methods of meeting them. Low-sulfur, low-volatile coals can be burned alone or blended with high-volatile? coals. This option may be a cost-effective alternative to the installation of scrubbers on coal-fired combustion systems. In some blending applications, problems may be encountered because the low sulfur content and high calorific value of the low-volatile or other clean coal allow it to economically upgrade extremely poor quality coal. While this is done to meet specification purposes, actual boiler performance may be dominated by the poorer quality coal. Thus, the reputation of the low-volatile or other clean coal suffers. As a result of laboratory and full scale testing, conducted over the last five years, a model has been developed to evaluate the relative combustion characteristics of various coals and coal blends. A database for different coals has been gathered. This paper presents the model and shows how power plants and coal mine personnel can use it to evaluate their coals from different sources. It can be used to blend two or more coals from different sources so that thee blended coal has flame stability characteristics which are similar to those of the baseline coal.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The undercut-and-fill method of mining was devel¬oped by Inco Ltd. in the Sudbury district of Ontario, Canada, to deal with abnormal ground conditions en¬countered in pillar recovery. Although it is now some¬times utilized as a primary stoping method, the main application continues to be in pillar recovery. In any mining method in which fill is employed, pillar systems tend to fail gradually as stoping pro¬gresses. As a result, most pillars are completely destressed and broken by the time pillar recovery com¬mences. Control of the back in such ground becomes a major problem and is contingent on local conditions as they exist in the workplace. In most mining methods, operations such as drilling, blasting, slushing, and tim¬bering can be readily assessed and the mining cycle pre¬dicted. However, in the mining of pillars with overhand methods, the time and effort required to maintain a safe back varies to a quite unpredictable extent. For years the square-set method was the most effective means available for pillar recovery. However, in areas where bad ground was encountered, square setting was a costly and sometimes hazardous method. As the tonnage mined from pillars increased, it was apparent that a safer and less expensive approach was required. Past experience indicated that the best way to deal with broken ground was to mine from the top down. Top slicing systems were examined but were rejected due to the major sub¬sidence which resulted. However, ideas generated from studying top slicing finally developed into the present method of undercut-and-fill. This method, which has almost completely replaced square-set mining, exhibits reduced costs, has improved safety and efficiency, elimi¬nates the factor of bad ground overhead, and allows a closer prediction of the actual mining cycle. The result is more accurate scheduling of pillar production. This factor is of increasing importance as the tonnage from pillar recovery increases in relation to total mine pro¬duction. Undercut-and-fill is a method of extracting a block of ore by mining successive cuts, working from the top down. After a cut of ore is completely mined out, lami¬nated timber stringers are constructed along the sides for the full length of the cut. Round logs covered by a wire screen are laid across the stringers to form a mat. The cut is then tightly filled with hydraulically placed cemented sand fill. Mining is then resumed on the cut immediately below the mat. As the cut advances, the timber stringers are supported by round timber posts seated on the solid bottom of the cut. Drilling, blasting, muck removal, and timbering operations are repeated until all the ore in the cut has been removed. At this time, another log mat is laid and the cut is filled. This sequence is continued until the block has been mined from level to level. The basic principles of undercut-and-fill can be adapted to a variety of mining situations. It can be applied transversely or longitudinally in ore bodies of varying width, that dip from vertical to flat lying. The method can be applied using conventional equipment or it can be mechanized through the introduction of small diesel or air-powered units for muck removal. Undercut¬and-fill is a selective method, ore recovery is high, and dilution can be controlled to an acceptable level. How¬ever, it is a high-cost, labor-intensive method and as such its use is restricted to areas where the less costly meth¬ods of ground support are not successful or where bulk mining methods are not adaptable. One basic require¬ment for undercut-and-fill is an adequate source of hydraulically placed cemented sand fill and a dependable sand plant and distribution system. The success of the undercut method is to a large degree dependent on the competence of the fill placed in each of the successive cuts. In theory, the weight of the fill on each cut is supported in part by the cemented sand itself as it binds to the rough sides of the mined¬out areas next to the pillar walls, and in part by the tim¬ber support. As mining progresses beneath the mat, a downward pressure is exerted within the cemented fill and a voussoir arch develops above the mat, across the full width of the cut. This supports the major portion of the load. The log mat and posts have a double func¬tion in that they carry the remaining weight not sup¬ported by the voussoir arch and in addition prevent any pronounced settling of the fill mass. Excessive settling breaks the bond between the cemented fill and the pillar walls, eliminating the arch effect and transferring the entire load to the mat and posts. The theory of a voussoir arch forming within the cemented sand fill mass is substantiated in practice by the fact that pillars have been mined from level to level with no more significant weight on the bottom cuts than was experienced on the top cuts. In effect, as mining progresses downward, there is no additional transfer of weight from previous cuts to the cut being mined. APPLICATION OF UNDERCUT-AND-FILL Because of their size, the Sudbury ore bodies are, for the most part, mined transversely and, to a considerable extent, by filling methods. Transverse stoping blocks are designed with 9-m (30-ft) crown pillars established be¬low each level and with stopes separated by vertical rib pillars. In past years, floor pillars were left above the level as well, but present practice favors the silling of primary stopes at the base of the rail. Rib pillars are designed to meet the ground control requirements of the primary stoping methods. Local conditions and past experience generally dictate their size. Historically, since the square-set method was to be used for recovery, rib pillars were designed to accommo¬date standard 1.7-m (5'h-ft) sets. A typical rib pillar is four sets wide [6.7 m (22 ft)] when located between two square-set or cut-and-fill stopes having a width of 8.4 m (27.5 ft). One of the major concerns of ground control in a coal mine is safety against failure of one of three components (i.e. roof, pillar, or floor) of the mine entry. In order to better design and evaluate stability of the mine entry with a certain confidence, a reliability approach is introduced rather than using the conventional safety factor (SF) method only. Advantages of using the reliability approach is that it not only takes variability of both rock/coal properties and stress distribution into consideration, but also assesses the stability of each component and mine entry as a whole system. Therefore, it is anticipated that, by using this approach, the current ground control technology in coal mine will convey a better sense of confidence. The results of a case example show a significant influence on the current design concept and stability evaluation of mine entry.

Velocity of detonation (VOD) is an important variable when evaluating the performance of mine blasts. Typically, for a VOD measurement, individual probes have to be loaded into each blast hole that requires a measurement, which increases the loading time and is not representative of the whole blast. Experimental studies of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from the detonation of explosive charges show that electric and magnetic field signals are observed when chemical explosions occur in the air, at the ground surface, and in the underground. EMP has the potential to evaluate VOD of the whole blast without impeding the loading process. Due to a variety of physical causes which make the electromagnetic effects complex, measuring EMP of the detonation of explosive charges has not been fully studied yet. Five different antennae were tested with explosives, which are commonly used in mining industry. Among the five antennae, aluminum and copper tape, and wire were successful to detect the EMP. INTRODUCTION The measurement of the velocity of detonation (VOD) helps in evaluating and comparing relative performance of explosives in mine blasts. A VOD of an explosive is usually predicted by empirical mathematical equations or measured in-hole by VOD meters. However, conventional methods to measure a VOD have constraints: only a limited number of holes can be measured because cost of consumables for such systems is very high, and systems only allow a certain number of holes to be measured. The measurement cables have to be placed into the holes prior to loading with explosives which means that preparing to take the measurement is time consuming and has to be well coordinated with the mine. In order to evaluate VOD for a whole blast, there is a possibility of using electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from the detonation of the explosives. As there are many parameters that affect the generated EMP from explosive charges, measuring EMP of the detonation of explosive charges has not been fully studied yet. Most studies conducted relate to military related explosives, not the ones frequently used in mining industry. This research has been performed to have a better understanding of EMP from the types of explosives which are commonly used in the mining industry. To discover a way to detect EMP efficiently, five different types of antennae have been studied in the air and in the underground blasting conditions: coil, monopole rod, log periodic, wire, and aluminum and copper tape. LITERATURE REVIEW Conventional methods of measuring VOD Over the years, demands for more accurate theoretical predictions and physical measurements of the effects of the explosives have increased. Especially when both demand and commodity price decline, mining companies are keen to understand the effectiveness of explosives since it has a direct relationship with fragmentation, which influences their production rate. Since the 1940s, various methods have been devised to determine VOD of explosives.

In the Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR) phase of its National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) pro¬gram, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) samples about 1400 sites for stream sediments in each two-degree quadrangle of the National Topographic Nap Series (NTMS) and about 1200 sites for ground or stream water. Through a geological/statistical analysis, we find that NURE data are useful for assessing the uranium resources of the NTMS quadrangles. Our computer-implemented System for Uranium Resource Evaluation (SURE) calculates a score for each NTMS quadrangle based on the HSSR, geologic, and radiometric data; we score the four Colorado quadrangles--Pueblo, Montrose, Durango, and Trinidad--that comprise the study area. We interpret the scores in terms of geology and the known occurrences, which include the Hanson ore deposit with reserves of 30,000,000 lbs. U308 and the Pitch mine with reserves of 1,740,000 lbs. SURE depends in part on distinguishing mineralized or metalliferous granitoids from barren ones through "geochemical signatures."

In recent years, the crude oil reserves of the world have increased at the same rate as the consumption. A Consideration of the global figures suggests that adequate supplies of petroleum will be available during the next decades. On the other hand, it in a fast of economic and political significance that the reserves in the industrialized countries increase much more slowly than in the developing countries. In Western Europe the reserves have even decreased. At the present time, about 70 % of the petroleum reserves of the world are in the Middle East and in Africa in regions in which political arises are prevalent or impending. For the industrialized countries, the discrepancies between the consumption and reserves in various regions of the world are a strong urge to investigate whether oil can be recovered from other sources. The situation will probably not be changed to a large extent by the discovery of oil in the north of Alaska. The main starting materials for the production of synthetic crude oil are coal, oil shale and tar sand. In North America, where the consumption of petroleum increases more rapidly than the reserves, there are enormous deposits of each of the three materials. This fact is another incentive toward the utilization of these unconventional oil reserves, which provide a reliable basis for a supple of energy for a long time to come.

INTRODUCTION How accurate are past and present employee radondaughter exposure records of underground uranium miners employed in the United States? This often-debated question is essential for future substantiation of safe exposure limits. An apparent discrepancy between company-reported exposures and Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) projected exposures was detected in 1977. For these reasons a need for an updated comparison of these exposure data was indicated. This paper gives some of the conclusions of the earlier study and compares more recent exposure records compiled by the Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc., with projected exposures based on sampling by Federal mine inspectors. EARLIER STUDY In its 1977 Annual Report (U.S. Department of the Interior, 1978), MSHA's predecessor, the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA), reported that there was "an apparent discrepancy between Federal inspection results and company records." Both company records and MESA's projections from samples taken during routine Federal inspections indicated reductions in the average exposure of underground uranium miners from 1975 to 1977, but the MESA projections were over 4 times higher than the company-reported averages. This apparent discrepancy however, was based on a comparison of exposure data reported for all U.S. underground uranium miners. This projection more closely represented the average exposure of U.S. underground uranium mine production workers who worked 1,500 hours or more during the year. Exposures of such workers are reported each year by the Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc. (AIF) in summaries of exposure data reported to the AIF by uranium mining companies throughout the United States. (The AIF exposure summary for 1979 appears as tables A-1 and A-2 in the appendix of this paper.) Assuming that the average exposure for each exposure range category is the midpoint of each exposure range category, table 1 compares the estimated average exposures for U.S. underground uranium mine production workers who worked underground 1,500 hours or more each year in 1975 through 1977 with the exposures projected by MESA for those years. Slade, 1977, explained some of the discrepancy between company records and MESA projections of miners' average radon-daughter exposures as follows: 1) Concentrations of radon daughters in some work areas can vary greatly during any one day. A variation from 0.3 WL to 17.0 WL has been measured in the same stope on the same day. 2) Seemingly simple abatement problems indicated by the regular Federal and State inspections were solved simply by manipulating the mine ventilation. 3) The methods used by mine operators to compute cumulative exposures were such that high radiation readings were seldom or never reflected in the records. For example, a work area sampled on Monday indicated a radon-daughter level equal to 0.2 WL and this was recorded. It was sampled again on Wednesday of the following week and the level was 2.2 WL. The miners were withdrawn or told to fix the ventilation, and when this was accomplished the area was sampled and found to be at 0.2 WL again. Although the miners could have been working in the higher concentration up to 6 days, this reading might never be reflected in their records. If it was recorded, only a fraction of the day on which it was discovered would be entered into the cumulative exposure calculation (time-weighted average). 4) Some of the mines visited used a mine average radiation concentration, and every employee working underground was given the same exposure per unit of time spent underground. As a result of the 1977 study, more stringent sampling and recordkeeping standards were proposed and public hearings held in 1977. The resulting new and revised health standards on radon-daughter sampling and exposure recordkeeping became effective August 30, 1979 (Mine Safety and Health Administration, 1979). Prior to these new regulations, radondaughter sampling requirements were on an "as often as necessary" basis (Code of Federal Regulations, 1978). The new regulations required practically all active work areas in underground mines to be sampled at least once every 2 weeks, with many areas requiring weekly sampling. Results of regional analyses of precious metal habits in Arizona ores lead to interpretations of a fundamental ore control related to geographic location that corresponds with crustal contrasts. Measurements of isotopic and trace element characteristics of Laramide ore-related intrusions lead to interpretations of crustal derivation of apparent ore-related magmas. Interpreted regionally, the numerous kinds of Laramide ores, which include porphyry copper deposits of this southern cordilleran region appear to be phenomena of a specific crustal lithology characterized by a basement of Proterozoic turbidites and (an interpreted) lower crust of amphibolite. This association with a specific basement terrane may be extended in principle from the United states into Mexico where faulted offsets of this basement are similarly favorable to formation of Laramide porphyry ores -to the exclusion of adjacent terranes. Whereas plate tectonic mechanisms may have triggered evolution of these ores, it is hypothesized here that crustal setting and crustal composition are more profound influences of metallogenesis.

Carbonaceous gold ores containing gold dispersed in sulfides are refractory to cyanidation because: ( 1) the carbonaceous materials adsorb gold during cyanidation; (2) a portion of the gold is so finely dispersed in the sulfide mineral lattice as to preclude contact with cyanide solution; and (3) a portion of the gold is chemically combined with carbonaceous material. Techniques which have been used to treat these ores are: (1) roasting or chemical oxidation to decompose sulfides and carbonaceous materials; (2) flotation to reject carbon; (3) the use of kerosene or other reagents to passivate the adsorptive carbon compounds; (4) carbon or resin in pulp; (5) flotation of a bulk concentrate which is treated by one of the above methods; and (6) the use of chelating agents which have a stronger affinity for gold than the activated carbon in the ore.

The loading characteristics of gold-bromide species onto activated carbon were evaluated using a batch system. The overall loading of gold onto activated carbon was rapid for the first few hours, but it continued without cessation as a result of the reduction of gold. Therefore, conventional equilibrium considerations were not applicable. Although loading continued slowly after several days, an abnormally high, loading capacity value of 10-12 meq/g carbon (650-800 kg Au/t) could be attained in 72 hours. The loading of gold-bromo species by activated carbon was by the mass transfer of (AuBr4)- species to the external surface to be reduced to metallic gold by carbon. Elution of gold from loaded carbon was feasible provided the carbon had not been loaded to high capacity values. If loading is carried to high levels, complete elution becomes impractical, and the gold may be recovered by ashing the carbon. For the high loading capacities observed, this option would appear to be cost effective. The effect of several variables on the loading capacity of the activated carbon for gold-bromo species is discussed.

A residential metals abatement program has been underway in Butte for more than 20 years. More than 1,350 yard and attic cleanups were completed by the end of 2018; most triggered by lead. While the focus is on remediation of residential soil and house dust, the program also includes a blood lead monitoring program with identification and abatement of additional sources of exposure for children with elevated blood lead levels (BLLs). As specified in the remediation program, studies are being conducted every 5 years to assess BLL data collected from Butte children. The first two studies have evaluated over 6,000 BLLs from 2003 through 2017 and evaluated trends over this time period, by Butte neighborhood, and as compared to areas outside of Butte. These studies showed that rates of elevated BLLs (i.e., those above 5 µg/dL) in Butte children have declined dramatically since 2002 but have been declining much more slowly since 2011. Improved rates of confirmation testing are needed to verify the rates of elevated BLLs. While the RMAP likely has contributed to these declines in BLLs the magnitude of impact cannot be quantified.
