In the first part of this paper the authors present an overview of industrial minerals produced in the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan, and supplied to the Pacific Rim countries. The second part outlines some of the unique opportunities for industrial minerals that exist in the three western Canadian provinces and those minerals we feel have development potential for overseas markets. Because of time constraints, it is not an exhaustive presentation on industrial minerals, but is focused on a few selected minerals that we believe have high potential.

This paper outlines the MOVIE project, which is dedicated to the development of a digital twin for an underground laboratory at the research and education mine “Forschungs- und Lehrbergwerk Reiche Zeche” in Freiberg (Germany). Data from induced rock deformations and temperature fluctuations is collected using fiber-optic sensors. The objective of the project is to establish a virtual laboratory for real-time analysis of the interactions between geology, geomechanics, geometry and ventilation. This will be achieved by integrating models from these disciplines with artificial intelligence, creating a sophisticated hybrid model. The insights gained will enhance safety and efficiency in mining through improved digital planning options, ultimately contributing to more effective resource management and operational decision-making in different mining environments.

"Workers at mineral processing facilities are often exposed to high levels of dust generated when ores are processed. Crushing, grinding, screening, and other processes generate large quantities of dust, which can exceed the threshold VALUES (prescribed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Many ores contain quartz (silica), which has been known to cause serious health problems in workers over time. Given the structure of mineral processing plants, the airflow regime is not coherent inside the building, which may lead to multiple recirculation zones. These recirculation zones can trap dust, and concentrations of dust can then rise over time. Therefore, there is a need to understand the airflow phenomenon that occur inside of mineral processing facilities and how these occurrences interact with the dust generation processes to identify zones of potentially high dust concentration. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling can give a better understanding of the airflow and help recommend designs and methods to mitigate the high dust concentrations in a mineral processing plant. This paper presents the CFD modeling of airflow inside of a mill building to demonstrate airflow patterns that will affect the generation and subsequent dispersion of dust due to crushing, grinding, and other activities. This study was conducted by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). INTRODUCTION In a mineral processing facility, minerals go through various mechanical processes in order to reduce their size for separation of economic minerals from gangue minerals to produce a final marketable product. This research, conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), focuses on ore mills in metal and nonmetal mining (MNM) operations, but the applicability of the approach will be valid for any large structure where workers are exposed to airborne contaminants. The processes of crushing, grinding, cleaning, drying, and product sizing in these facilities generate a large amount of dust, creating hazardous conditions for the workers in these facilities. This is highlighted by the fact that MSHA sampling data for the years 1997–2012 indicate that 12.3% and 15.9% of the gathered samples were over 100 µg/m3 for silica for metal and nonmetal mills, respectively [1]. Mineral processing operations typically use some type of engineering control to address their most significant dust sources. Engineering controls include such approaches as bag-house-type dust collectors, scrubbers, and electrostatic precipitation [2]."

The purpose of this paper is to bring to your attention the various kinds of high performance graphites available today, their characteristics and possible applications. These materials are products of a proprietary high temperature technology developed by Superior Graphite Company. We feel we have only begun to tap the potential of this technology and the utilization of the resulting products. During the course of the paper, we shall investigate high purity, high performance graphites made from raw materials such as mined natural graphites, synthetic graphites and petroleum derivatives. We shall define their characteristics and resulting benefits to current applications, along with applications currently under development. It is our desire to stimulate speculation and development of current high performance graphites and their applications as well as ideas for new high performance products and applications. First, a little background about the process. The technology was developed through a concentrated R&D effort which culminated in 1976 in the construction of a unique furnace capable of continuously processing tonnage quantities of granular carbons at temperatures in excess of 2,500 degrees C. This process is capable of refining various carbonaceous raw materials, including natural graphites, to levels of purity and consistency that were previously unattainable in commercial quantities. Carbon contents in excess of 99.9% are currently being produced on a continuous flow-through basis. Since beginning operation in 1977, this plant, located in Hopkinsville, KY, has been expanded in stages to its present capacity of producing over 45,000 tons of purified graphites and graphitic carbons per year. In addition to the purification process, the technology used allows the introduction of selected elements into the carbon/graphite structure to provide additional benefits. Elements of interest include boron, silicon, copper, iron and rare earths. The characteristics of and applications for some of these products will be discussed later.

This paper describes four new families of flotation products which are currently being introduced at the industrial level. A brief summary of the chemical basis behind each product family will be given. This is then followed by a selection of flotation examples which illustrate the more important use characteristics that have been observed to date. It is becoming more apparent with further testing that these four new product families can offer both technical and economic advantages to the industrial flotation process operator.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a light-emitting diode (LED) area luminaire called the Saturn and conducted a laboratory study using a Fletcher High Dual-boom Mast Feed (HDDR) roof bolting machine. The Saturn luminaire was designed to (1) enhance floor illumination to enable better detection of trip hazards in the interior spaces of a roof bolter and (2) reduce glare that has typically been an issue of concern on roof bolters. This paper reports on the results of achieving the second objective. The existing roof bolter lighting was the baseline and was compared with three versions of the Saturn luminaire relative to light intensity (100%, 75%, and 50%). Discomfort and disability glare data were obtained from 30 participants that comprised three age groups. Discomfort glare perceptions were obtained using the De Boer rating scale, and disability glare was quantified by using Mars Letter Contrast Sensitivity tests. Discomfort glare was reduced at least 3 levels with all Saturn versions. Also, a predictive model was used to estimate discomfort glare, and the results were similar. Disability glare was the least for the Saturn’s 50% intensity, and all Saturn versions had significantly less disability glare than with the baseline lighting. Veiling luminance was calculated and used as another indicator of disability glare. Veiling luminance was 28 to 42 times greater with the baseline lighting as compared with that of the Saturn lighting. Lastly, visibility levels were calculated. The Saturn versions were 4 to 6.5 times better in terms of visibility level.

The European Economic Community (The Common Market) is now shifting from I a coal oriented to an oil oriented economy. The proportion of energy supplied by oil has increased from only 13% in 1950 to 38% in 1962, and will approach 50% by 1970. In the past five years Common Market petroleum demand has in- creased 15% per year compared with only 3% per year in the United States. This rapid shift to oil can be explained by looking at oil's competition, First; there is simply not enough other energy - European coal, natural gas and hydro-electric power - to meet the demand, Secondly, oil?s primary competing energy in the Common Market is coal, and Community coal is high-priced - it costs more than two and a half times as much as U. S, coal at the pithead. The third reason for the shift to oil is consumer preference for the ease of handling, convenience and cleanliness of liquid fuels. As these reasons suggest, much of the shift to oil and the resulting growth in demand would have occurred whether or not the Common Market organization had existed. On the other hand, the Common Market has stimulated the use of oil by causing a higher rate of energy consumption, and oil has been the beneficiary of most of this growth.

Numerous Colorado mountain tunnels that date to the late 1800s convey water to the farming and urban communities of the eastern Front Range. Repairs to these remote facilities, often located in public lands at altitudes of 11,000 feet or more, require detailed planning, close coordination with multiple agencies, and creative execution. Issues and solutions discussed include designing repairs in undocumented ground and support conditions, logistical challenges, work in a short summer construction window, stabilization of historically signicant structures, and proect delivery strategies. xamples that illustrate early contractor involvement, exibility in design, and construction solutions are presented.

Generally speaking, erosion, as a process which entails degradation of surface layers of earth under the influence of the mechanical energy of surface waters, and from the point of view of biosphere sustainability, is a harmful process. This is absolutely true when agricultural and forest areas are concerned. However, if erosion is viewed selectively, this general definition about its harm raises serious questions. In other words, the erosion which takes place in the terrains where there is no vegetation because of the geological composition of the soil, does no harm. On the contrary, if the mineralogical composition of such terrains is characterized by a presence of precious and rare metals, erosion can be very useful. It contributes to the creation of new alluvial deposits of these metals in the waters in the plain land. It is here that torrents from hills come down and cause erosion. And finally, if there were no erosion, there would be no renewable deposits of gravel and sand.

INTRODUCTION Rapidly increasing capacities of equipment used to load and handle material at the face require improved haulage equipment and better methods of transporting the mined materials or "muck" to the shaft or slope and out of the mine to the processing plant on the surface. Increasingly, those transportation demands are being satisfied with underground belt conveyors. Such con¬veyors provide the most readily available, most efficient, and most reliable method of carrying materials in a continuous and rapid flow from the face loading equip¬ment to the surface plant. Almost universally, belt con¬veyors are used in coal mines and those nonmetallic and metallic mines operating in relatively flat bedded deposits. Belt conveyors are available in a wide range of capacities, mainly limited by belt width, belt speed, and weight of the material to be transported. They can be used on the level, on grades, on the surface, or under¬ground. They provide a rapid and constant flow of material, transporting the material as quickly as it is mined. Length of belt conveyors is almost unlimited. Where the haulage distance exceeds the practical capacity of a single conveyor unit, two or more conveyors can be used in series. Single conveyors more than 1.6 km (1.0 mile) long are common; multiple-unit conveyors in series operation are transporting materials over distances exceeding 16.1 km (10 miles). Depending upon mate¬rials being transported, job conditions, cost of the terrain being spanned, and alternative haulage methods avail¬able, conveyors can be conceivably economical for even greater distances. Table 1 lists maximum belt speeds recommended for most materials, relating belt speeds to belt widths. Table 2 lists capacities of typical conveyors of various widths and speeds, transporting commonly mined mate¬rials of various weights. ADVANTAGES OF CONVEYOR SYSTEMS For several years after their initial introduction, belt conveyors were available only with rigid side frames or a supporting structure of steel and concrete. That con¬struction limited underground applications, due to the cost and relative inconvenience of extending or retract¬ing the belt conveyor in the confined underground environment. However, during the last 20 years, wire-¬rope side-frame belt conveyors, as shown in Fig. 1, have become widely used in underground applications. Even wider use can be anticipated with their application to the fast movement of materials in surface mining operations. Advantages of the wire-rope side-frame belt con¬veyors were realized first in panel or section belt haulage in coal mines. Soon afterward, use of those conveyors was extended to gathering and main-line haulage. The mobility of the wire-rope side-frame conveyor is the principal reason for its success. The conveyor can be extended, retracted, dismantled, moved, and reassembled easily, even in relatively confined under¬ground spaces. The intermediate structure consists of rope support stands, wire-rope side frames, wire-rope tie-off stands, and the necessary carrying idlers and return idlers. An important and very attractive feature is the ability to suspend the conveyor from the roof in an underground mine, as shown in Fig. 2, leaving more room for improved housekeeping and allowing passage of face-service equipment, haulage vehicles, and other mining equipment. The conveyor's open construction allows quick and easy visual inspection of its com¬ponents for failures or malfunctions; it also facilitates checking and correcting conveyor-belt alignment. Other advantages contributing to the attractiveness and widespread application of wire-rope side-frame conveyors in main-line, slope, and surface installations include: lower capital costs, lower installation costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced impact on idlers and belting, reduced spillage and minimal cleanup, improved conformation to undulating terrain or mine bottoms, and the ability to span most obstacles without heavy structural support. CONVEYOR CLASSIFICATIONS Underground belt conveyors are classified normally according to their function. Generally, conveyors are classified into one of four main categories: 1) Panel or section conveyors normally receive the material to be transported directly from the face-haulage equipment. 2) Gathering conveyors are secondary haulage units that usually receive material from two or more panel conveyors. 3) Main-line conveyors transport all the material mined in the underground operations to the slope or shaft. Normally, they receive the material from two or more gathering conveyors. 4) Slope conveyors generally operate in tandem with the main-line conveyor, providing continuous Table 1. This report is based on existing reports and recently gathered field data. It discusses mineral resource potential of Tertiary playas in the Fort Irwin region. An estimated 1.3 million tons of measured salt "reserves", and 20 million tons of indicated salt resources, have been identified north of the fort. Other indicated resources include 300,000 tons of celestite, 800,000 tons of gypsum, and 10 million tons of selenite. Zeolitic tuff was mined south of Fort Irwin from 1978 to 1984, and unexplored occurrences are widespread. Calcium-bentonite is mined near Barstow, and more may exist, including valuable sodium-and lithium-based bentonites.

Frequently ore reserve studies utilize samples from a series of drilling or other types of sampling campaigns. Sometimes there is a mix of sample types, say for instance, channel samples from underground workings and drill core from surface drilling. Since drilling, sampling, logging, and sample preparation protocols tend to change over time, there is always a question whether the samples give similar results that vary only by chance alone. The problem of comparing the various campaigns is complicated by the presence of spatial relationships among the samples. Geostatistical tests take the spatial correlation into account, but these tests may be complicated and cumbersome to implement. A comparison method based on familiar statistical graphics is presented which accounts for the spatial relationships. It allows comparisons to be made quickly by using simple statistical graphs such as scatterplots and boxplots.

The recent non-equilibrium electro-phoretic mobility measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in soluble salt flotation systems suggest that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by hetero-coagulation. Previously reported flotation results confirm this surface charge/collector colloid adsorption model. However, the nature of the inter-particle forces responsible for hetero-coagulation of such oppositely charged particles at high ionic strengths remains to be determined. In this regard, atomic force microscopy was used for inter-particle force measurements at high ionic strengths. Model systems such as polystyrene/quartz and silica/sapphire were studied to measure the particle interaction forces prevalent at high ionic strengths. Results from this study indicate that while repulsive hydration forces exist between similarly charged hydrophilic particles, attractive forces exist between oppositely charged hydrophilic particles in high ionic strength solutions. The repulsive forces between similarly charged hydrophilic surfaces at high ionic strengths (2-4 M) are described by a double exponential function with decay lengths of 0.17 and 1.4 nm depending upon the surfaces involved. On the other hand, attractive forces were observed between oppositely charged hydrophilic surfaces at high ionic strengths (2-4M) and were described by a single exponential function with decay lengths of up to 9 nm depending upon the surfaces involved.

Many oxide silver and molybdenum deposits remain undeveloped because chemical extraction yields poor recoveries or is environ-mentally unacceptable. Bio-reductive leaching of such ore samples at MBX resulted in high recoveries of silver and molybdenum. When baseline 3-day cyanide bottle roll tests were conducted on manganiferous oxide silver ore, 13.7% of the silver was extracted. In contrast, 86% of the silver was microbially solubilized into the organic growth medium by bio-reduction with 99.8% dissolution of manganese. A follow-up cyanide bottle roll test yielded an additional 8.5% silver recovery for a total recovery of 94.5%. Baseline 3-day acid bottle roll tests of the iron oxide molybdenum ore yielded 1.8% moly. However, bio-reduction solubilized 93.3% of the moly into the growth medium. An additional 0.3% moly was recovered during the follow-up acid bottle roll test. Microbial treatment of refractory oxide ores with bio-reductive bacteria resulted in higher recoveries of silver and molybdenum than conventional chemical leaching. The bioleaching process occurred at a near-neutral pH at ambient temperatures. The bacterial solubilization of silver and moly was achieved without the use of cyanide or sulfuric acid.

The Bureau of Mines performed a study to determine optimal locations for longwall face methane monitoring equipment. Longwall face ignitions continue to be a concern to the U.S. coal mining industry. Gains in ignition control technology have been somewhat negated by advances in longwall productivity. More reliable, heavy-duty longwall face systems generate higher production rates and increase methane liberation rates. These rates will likely continue to rise in the future as further coal production increases occur. Efforts will continue in the areas of methane drainage, methane containment, and methane dilution. In addition, more effective face methane monitoring is needed. As technology continues toward automated longwall panels, the importance of monitoring for methane at the shearer becomes even more significant. Since the primary face ignition source is the shearer mining machine, the Bureau ran tests to determine the best location to take methane readings on the shearer. This information, in conjunction with data obtained from field studies, provides a knowledge base for selecting optimum face methane monitoring locations.

The problem of estimating pillar capacity in coal mines has motivated development of a variety of empirical equations. Most of these equations have arisen from experience and a very limited set of measurements that have, necessarily, been focused on particular regions or coal fields. Their applicability is often limited to a specific range of pillar sizes. This is of particular concern in the design of large gateroad pillars and small barrier pillars between panels. The result has been a variety of equations and equation coefficients that can calculate load estimates to size pillars. Inclusion of these equations in more sophisticated loading models, such as boundary element methods (e.g. LaModel and MULSIM) has been hampered by absence of a function that describes specific variation of coal strength within the pillar. A singular exception, to our knowledge, is a function corresponding to the Bieniawski pillar strength equation. Because of this, it is the only coal strength criteria inherently available in most boundary element models. This paper presents a general method for deriving local coal strength, as a function of distance from the pillar rib, for an arbitrary pillar strength equation. Integration of this function provides the strength of pillar regions, or cells, needed for boundary element models. The method is demonstrated for the Bieniawski, Maleki and Holland-Gaddy equations. The Maleki and Holland-Gaddy equations contrast strongly with Bieniawski as strengths are extrapolated to large pillars and barriers. This development provides a tool for incorporating any of the proposed empirical equations into a boundary element model, thereby allowing the analyst to choose the most appropriate equation for a particular region, coal seam and/or pillar size.

Current approaches to reclaiming acid generating tailings include permanent water cover or encapsulation with various synthetic liners and/or clay. Although these methods can be effective, some ongoing maintenance will be required in perpetuity to ensure that water levels are adequately maintained or that the integrity of any capping system is protected. The successful creation of wetlands in tailings basins offers the possibility of creating a stable environment for the tailings with minimal maintenance. Acid-generating tailings from a massive zinc sulfide deposit in Winston Lake, Ontario, were placed in small cylindrical tanks to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of creating wetlands and mitigating acid and metal release. Two uncovered controls were established in addition to the five treatments, which were done in duplicate. Each wetland tank was 117 cm in diameter and contained 6 1 cm of tailings. Treatments included 61 cm cover of wetland soil, 61 cm of glacial till, 61 cm of tailings, and two tanks with 71 cm of water. One of the water covers included the aquatic macrophytes: Elodea canadensis, Potamegeton sp., and Ceratophyllum demersum. Cattails (Typha latifolia) were planted in the plots with substrate cover, and the initial water level was set at ten centimeters. The pH within the tailings in the treated tanks generally ranged between 6.0 and 6.5 and zinc concentration ranged from 0.02 to 0.1 mg/L. The drainage from the controls had an average pH of 3.3, and 7,700 mg/L of zinc.

The Bellavista Gold Deposit lies 75 Kms north west of San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, Central America and 3 Kms north east of Miramar, in the Province of Puntarenas. The total road distance from San Jose to the deposit is 120 Kms all paved road except for a 2.5 Km graded, gravel road on the property (Figure 1). Infrastructure services in the Miramar-Puntarenas area are well developed with electrical power distribution, a modern port facility and community services being available. The deposit lies on the south west flank of the Tilaran Mountain Range between an elevation of 550 and 800 meters above sea level. The local topography is steep, originally covered with pre-montaine, tropical wet forest vegetation which has been largely destroyed due to clearing for cattle grazing. The annual rainfall is approximately 2,950 mms, 90% of which occurs between May and October.

Hydrostatic trunnion bearings were recently provided on large Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mills driven by wraparound motors assembled on the head to shell flanges. A conventional SAG mill would have a ring gear driven through one or two pinions. The effects of the magnetic air gap forces from this new SAG mill drive arrangement on the performance of the bearing are discussed. A step-by-step systematic analytical de-sign of the hydrostatic trunnion bearing is presented, followed by a discussion of grinding mill erection requirements to conform with the design. A brief comparison with other bearing types and their response to the effects of magnetic air gap forces are also presented.
