The purpose of this study was to investigate the dry grindability of calcite powders in a vertically and horizontally orientable laboratory batch type stirred mill. The experimental results were evaluated using stress intensity analysis. The performance was also compared in terms of mill orientation. The results showed that the d50 values decreased with increasing stress energy down to a certain point and then increased for both milling orientations. Even though the optimum stress energies for both vertical and horizontal orientations were in the range of 1*10−3 to 5*10−3 Nm at 750 and 1500 kJ/kg energy consumption, the product size was finer for the horizontal orientation at the same stress energy value. Additionally, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to compare mill orientation (vertical vs. horizontal) for the same mill and under the same test conditions.

CSM and NTNU models are among the most commonly used models in TBM performance evaluation. Due to increasing application of TBM in different tunneling conditions, modification became necessary for these models. Sensitivity analyses on these two models indicate that both models are very sensitive to machine characteristics. Analyses performed on CSM database for cutter load and penetration rate prediction indicate while the r-square of the CSM model is reasonably high for the predicted cutterload, the r-square value for the penetration is low. In order to increase prediction capability of CSM model for penetration rate the model was reevaluated using non-dimensional analysis and the original database of Colorado school of mines. NTNU model is evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation and regression analysis. The results of analyses indicate that the majority of the variation of the penetration in NTNU model can be explained by only three parameters. This might indicate that the effects of other factors are overshadowed and it is worthy to reevaluate NTNU model using original database and more updated statistical methods to avoid overlapping of different parameters correlations.

An on-line rheometer, suitable for use with slurries, has been developed at Michigan Technological University. This rheometer can be used with both Newtonian and non-Newtonian slurries, and produces complete shear-rate/shear stress curves which characterize the time-independent rheology of the slurry. The sensor utilizes the Hagen-Poiseuille equation and Boyle's Law to calculate the shear rate, slurry flowrate, and shear stress from a series of pressure measurements. The design of the unit allows the measurement sample to be continuously collected from operating process streams in the often-hostile on-line environment. The shear rate/shear stress curves can be used to conveniently calculate the apparent viscosity at any given shear rate, and also to measure any yield stress or other deviations from Newtonian behavior.

If two fluid phases are brought into contact with a solid, one fluid may completely wet the surface to the exclusion of the other, or both may wet it, forming a three-phase line of contact. These relative wetting tendencies are quantified by the contact angle 0 which is related by Young's equation (1,2) [12 cos? = 13 ? 23] [to the three interfacial tensions (3). GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Henderson mine utilizes a highly mechanized, continuous panel-caving system to extract ore from a deep, massive, molybdenum deposit. The mine site, lo¬cated 80.5 km (50 miles) west of Denver, is situated at 3170 m (10,400 ft) above sea level in a steep valley on the eastern side of the Continental Divide. The mill site, located on the western side of the divide, is linked to the mine via a 15.5-km (9.6-mile) railroad tunnel. Mine production is scheduled to reach 27 215 t/ d (30,000 stpd) from the uppermost production level. This pro¬duction rate will have been reached within the four years following an intensive ten-year preproduction development program. A second production level, due to come on stream in later years, will expand production capabilities to 31 751 t/d (35,000 stpd). The mine, which employs approximately 2000, has blocked-out ore reserves of 220 Mt (242 million st) at an average grade of 0.42% MoS2. Geology The Henderson deposit is composed of two partially overlapping ore bodies that lie 1080 m (3600 ft) beneath the peak of Red Mountain. The ore bodies are entirely within a Tertiary rhyolite porphyry intrusive complex that has intruded Precambrian granite. The de¬posit is elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 670 x 910 m (2200 x 3000 ft). In section it is arcuate with an average thickness of 185 m (600 ft). The top of the deposit is at an elevation of 2610 m (8700 ft) while the lower limits range from 2340 m (7800 ft) on the west to below 2100 m (7000 ft) on the east. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore bodies and consists of molybdenite and quartz in random to subrandom, intersecting, closely spaced veinlets. Cavability RQD (rock quality designation) * values measured from Henderson drill core and compared with the RQD values from the Climax and Urad block-cave mines in¬dicated that the Henderson ore would cave but with difficulty and that a high percentage of the cave ma¬terial would be blocky. Initial caving experience shows the Henderson ore caves easier and with greater frag¬mentation than was indicated by the RQD values. Pos¬sible reasons for this are: 1) The greater lithostatic load at the Henderson has a greater effect on caving and fragmentation than anticipated. 2) The relief of confining pressure due to caving action and brittleness of the rock is enhancing breakage. Mine Layout The Henderson mine layout was designed from its inception for a large-scale, rubber-tired, continuous panel-caving mining system. The ore body is vertically divided into three major mine levels (Fig. 1). The top¬most level (8100 level), which is 2469 m (8100 ft) above sea level, is the current mine production level. There are tens of thousands of inactive mine features in 274 mining districts in New Mexico (including coal, uranium, metals, and industrial minerals districts). However, many of these mines have not been inventoried or prioritized for reclamation. Many of these mines have existing mine wastes, generated during mineral production, which could have potential for critical minerals, especially since the actual mineral production was generally for precious and base metals and not critical minerals. The purpose of this project is to characterize and estimate the critical mineral endowment of mine wastes and “beta-test” USGS sampling procedures. This project is important to the state of New Mexico because critical mineral resources must be identified before land exchanges, withdrawals or other land use decisions are made by government officials. Future mining of mine wastes that potentially contain critical minerals will directly benefit the economy of New Mexico. Possible re-mining of mine wastes could clean up these sites and pay for reclamation. Furthermore, this project will include training of younger, professional geologists and students in economic and reclamation geology by the PIs.

As the 2017 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., I am pleased to present the 2017 issue of the Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., Vol. 342. A significant portion of the contribution that we make as a professional society is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable the transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). Those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2017 Transactions contains some of the most interesting research and insights from the past year and features an international slate of authors spanning industry, academia and government. Papers include the latest findings from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), a special review article on Heap Leach Modeling, and articles from two Special Issues on Rare Earths. The 2017 Transactions consists of a total of 54 technical papers, encompassing all 21 papers published in 2017 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering (Vol. 69) and all 24 papers published in 2017 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 34). Additionally, this volume contains 9 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All of the technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our Publications staff. As the 2017 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.

About 200 M tons of coal were imported into Japan in 2007 and Indonesia was its second largest exporter, accounting for about 30 M tons (12% of the total imported coal). Indonesia produced about 200 M tons of coal, about 75% of which was exported in 2007. As the Indonesian government has decided on an energy policy wherein 33% of the country?s primary energy demand will be met by coal by the year 2025, the domestic demand for coal has increased dramatically in recent years. Over 99% of the coal produced in Indonesia comes from surface mines. However, the conditions of surface mines are worsening each year: the stripping ratio is increasing, approaching the economic ratio, and the infrastructure for coal from inland mining areas is insufficient for such intense mining operations. To meet the demand for coal in Indonesia and the rest of the world, underground mines have to be developed. However, mining engineers and/or miners in Indonesia do not have a lot of experiences, expertise and know-how concerning the plans and operations of an underground coal mine. In addition, the industry faces a lot of problems which include poor conditions such as a steep coal seam, groundwater problem, stability of highwall, etc. Under these situations, a mine targeted in this research attempts to develop a new underground mine from an open-cut highwall because the stripping ratio in the surface mining area has almost reached the limitation of economic value. This paper discusses the possible development of a new underground coal mine from an open-cut highwall by means of field observation and numerical analysis.

Since the establishment of the standard dust concentration of 2 mg/m3, a strong effort has been made by mining engineers and researchers to provide better dust control equipment and procedures for underground coal mines. Particular areas of success have been control of dust generation by better coal-cutting strategy, better design of water sprays for dust suppression and air movement, use of scrubbers, and improved design of face ventilation systems. A drastic improvement occurred over time such that the average dust concentrations for continuous miner operators dropped from 6.5 mg/m3 in 1968 to 1.3 mg/m3 in 1980 and for auger, cutter, longwall, and roof bolter occupations from 2.7 mg/m3 in 1973 to 1.6 mg/m3 in 1980 (Niewiadomsky, 1983).

This paper examines the intrinsic mechanisms of cutter roof by combining field investigation, laboratory testings, underground instrumentations, and numerical modelling. Cutter roof developed during the development of a set of longwall panel entries in a West Virginia coal mine was presented as a case study. Mining alternatives applicable to the mine are recommended. Cutter roof occurred in two other West Virginia coal mines were also investigated Detailed comparisons were made among the three cases. As a result of the extensive investigation, intrinsic mechanisms of cutter roof failures under various conditions are presented from the practical and theoretical points of view.

INTRODUCTION FMC's Paradise Peak mine, located 13 Ian (8 miles) south of Gabbs, Nevada, became opera¬tional in April of 1986 (Figure 1). It was designed and built by Davy McKee, who was instrumental in equipment design and selection. It is the 7th largest gold deposit in the United States with defined reserves of 10.9 mt (12 million st) containing 34 million gms (1.1 million tr oz) of recoverable gold and 933 million gms (30 million tr oz) of recoverable silver. The mine extracts ore by the open-pit method, taking advantage of a 1.5:1 stripping ratio. The mill operates at a 3600 mt/day (4000 st/d) capacity. Crushing is done in three stages to achieve an ore size of minus 0.635 cm (0.25 inches). Grinding further reduces the ore to 85% minus 100 mesh. The ground ore is treated with cyanide in agitated leach tanks and then washed in the counter-current decantation (OCD) thickeners. Zinc is added to the clarified, deaerated pregnant solution to precipitate the precious metals. The precipitate is acid digested to eliminate excess zinc, filtered and retorted to drive off contained mercury. The retorted precipitate is then fluxed, melted and poured through cascade molds. Dore bars are cleaned for shipment and the slag is sent to an in-house slag treatment system. ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION The dry electrostatic slag treatment system at Paradise Peak is the first installation of its kind. Electrostatic separation has been widely used in mineral processing since the early 1950's. A brief discussion of the theory behind the process is helpful to those not familiar to electrostatic separation. Charging and sepa¬rating slags, dry minerals or other materials by ion bombardment is the most common form of electrostatic separation. Millions of tonnes of minerals are processed each year by this method. In an ion bombardment separation, granular material is fed onto a grounded metal cylinder (or roll) and charged by a corona-producing electrode placed above the roll's surface (Figure 2). While both conductors and non¬conductors become charged, only the conductor is able to lose its charge. The charged non¬conductor, as it rests on the roll's surface, "sees" an oppositely charged image of itself in the metal surface. It is attracted to the image charge, becomes electrostatically pinned to, and moves with the roll's surface. The conductive particle also sees an image and is attracted to it. But upon touching the roll's surface, it discharges rapidly to the grounded surface and is thrown free from the roll's surface with a projectile motion. In the case of precious metal slags, the con¬ductive particles would be metallic prills of dore metal; and the nonconductive particles would be the slag, free of metal. Middling grains, generally, are in the form of a metallic prill encased in or incompletely liberated from slag. LABORATORY TESTING A number of precious metal slag samples have been tested in the laboratory. It has been found that the composition of slags vary widely from one refinery operation to another. Typical laboratory procedure is to crush and size the slag followed by two-stage lab-scale electro¬static separation. The conductor fractions from the first and second pass are then combined as a prill concentrate; middlings fraction and clean slag tailings from the second pass are held separate. Selected results from laboratory testing are shown in Table 1. It is important to note in Table 1 that the assays represent overall silver and gold, not metallic values. From experience, the laboratory results are typically lower in grade and recovery than the industrial installations. This is largely due to the hydroscopic nature of precious metal slags coupled with the high local humidity in Carpco's Jacksonville, Florida, location. There is an increasing requirement for geophysical surveys carried out during geotechnical investigations to provide direct information about rock quality or other geotechnical parameters. With the paucity of information to correlate geophysical results with actual rock properties, this is still difficult to achieve and additional research effort needs to be performed to address this issue. Nowadays, several researchers have been described detailed studies which designed specifically to investigate this matter. Generally, geophysical techniques which are used to estimate seismic velocities in the subsurface focus on the low strain levels that are not large enough to induce significant nonlinear, nonelastic stress-strain behavior (Luna and Jadi, 2000), which is normally evaluated when addressing liquefaction potential of soils in the shallow subsurface. Soil parameters relevant to seismic ground response (Rechtien, 1996) are density, relative density and void ratio, permeability, shear modulus, water saturation, soil fabric and stress history. Detailed characterization of elastic properties near a major construction site (e.g. a bridge) is useful for near field dynamic analysis of soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects. The coupled effect of the bridge foundation (piles, piers or abutments) and the soil immediately surrounding these substructure elements is essential for dynamic SSI analysis of these critical bridge structures. This paper presents a geophysical investigation performed along the under construction highway of Egnatia Odos, approximately 13 km west from the town of Xanthi in N. Greece. Twelve geotechnical boreholes, drilled at the maximum depth of 75 m, approximately located 20 m from the Nestos River. The objective of the survey was to obtain the high-resolution compressional and shear wave velocities of the shallow subsurface for computation of elastic engineering properties of the unconsolidated material interposed between the investigated boreholes. Joint interpretation of borehole logs and velocity images obtained by P- and S-wave traveltime inversions outlined shallow geological anomalies.

Overexposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the U.S. mining industry. Most other categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal noise data from 2000-2004 show that the continuous mining machine (CMM) is first among all equipment, accounting for 35% of noise overexposures. Joy Mining Machinery, in collaboration with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is conducting research to reduce noise generated by continuous mining machines. This paper describes a "JOY Designed for Noise Reduction" (JOY DNR; patent pending) tail section as a noise control for reducing the noise overexposures of CMM operators. Underground testing shows a 45% to 65% noise exposure reduction for the operator when comparing the JOY DNR tail section results to those for a standard machine. Utilizing this newly developed noise control, along with previously proven controls, will provide CMM operators an opportunity to be within the MSHA permissible exposure limit (MSHA-PEL). "Rare Earth Elements (REEs) and their compounds are essential for numerous modern high tech applications such as renewable energy technologies, catalysts and defense applications. The destabilization of REE pricing owing to the global demand and supply deficit has forced many countries to re-evaluate the possibility of indigenous production of REEs. Cost effective and eco-friendly opportunities are being widely explored for extraction of REEs from non-conventional mineral sources such as coal and coal byproducts to stabilize the supply chain. Coal from Central Alaska (Healy Coal Mine) and Southern Alaska-Cook Inlet (Wishbone Hill) province have been found to possess elevated REE concentrations as compared to average world coal estimates. The objective of the study is to enrich the REEs in the fine size fraction (-75 Microns) from Healy and Wishbone Hill by froth flotation technique. A Box-Behnken design was applied for modeling and optimization of some operating variables on the flotation to maximize REE enrichment. The variables studies were frother dosage, pulp density (% Solids) and collector dosage. Experiments were carried out using a statistical design and the main and interaction effects on response variable was evaluated by analyzing 3D response surfaces. Based on the experimental results the optimum flotation conditions for maximum REE enrichment in the froth fraction was obtained at 4.2% Solids and 32.7 ppm of frother dosage for Healy coal sample and 10% Solids and 37.9 ppm of frother dosage for Wishbone Hill coal sample. The quadratic equation for modelling and optimizing the response variable is found to be independent of collector dosage for both the coal samples. INTRODUCTION Alaskan coal deposits are distributed in three major coal provinces and are in Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks. The climate, vegetation type and sedimentation process has attributed to low sulfur content (averaging 0.3 percent) in Alaskan coals compared to other coal deposits found across the globe. In Central Alaska-Nenana and Southern Alaska-Cook Inlet coal province coal resources are contained in Tertiary rocks while bulk of the Coal resource in North Slope coal province is contained in Cretaceous and Tertiary coal bearing rocks [1]. Coals from Central Alaska- Nenana (Healy) and Southern Alaska-Cook Inlet province (Wishbone Hill) have been found to possess elevated concentrations of critical REEs as compared to the amounts present in world coals (Figure 1). The Wishbone Hill deposit is considered a relatively small deposit, with about 14 million tons of identified reserves, compared to Healy which has over 500 million tons identified [2]. The REE concentrations up to 286 ppm and 524 ppm on ash basis have been reported by Gupta et al. in 2016 with elevated concentrations Ce, La, Y and Nd which are expressed to be of critical importance by US Department of Energy. Accordingly, the two coal samples possess the potential to be used as a REE resource in the near future under favorable socio-economic and geo-political scenarios. [3, 4]"

The paper discusses design consideration of ongoing works that include structural analyses to evaluate repair strategies for the post-tensioned reinforced caissons, the scheme to repair two leaky joints between caissons, the design of passive fire protection that involved in situ and real scale laboratory tests, and other tunnel systems upgrades.

"Standing support is often used in conjunction with underground retreat mining. Knowledge of the load-displacement behavior of standing support and loading induced by the mine opening is critical to proper support selection. The NIOSH STOP database contains load-displacement laboratory test data for most commonly used standing supports. Hydraulic load cells currently used to measure in-situ loading of standing supports have exhibited leakage under load, producing irregularities within the dataset. An improved hydraulic load cell eliminates leakage and produces more consistent data.INTRODUCTIONA hydraulic load cell, more commonly known as a flat jack or JackPack, is a device installed to determine the loading characteristics of the roof-to-floor supports. These standing or roof-to-floor supports include, but are not limited to pumpable cribs, cans, wooden cribs (4-point, 9-point, etc.), metal props, wood timbers, concrete donut cribs, and other variations of these standing supports.Flat jack devices have been used previously to determine the loading of such roof to floor supports. The most commonly used load cell for standing supports is based on a design intended for pre-stressing standing supports, not load measurement. Preloading helps to keep the supports, such as timbers props and cribs, in place during the dynamic loading associated with blasting (Barczak and Tadolini, 2004).Flat Jacks are manufactured in various shapes and sizes depending on the application; common shapes are square and round that are 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) thick when collapsed, as shown in Figure 1. These load cells are produced in South Africa and can be formed into several different shapes depending on the application (Barczak, 2003). The sheet metal that makes up the bladder is comprised of 19-gauge or 1.11 mm (0.04 inch) thickness; the top and bottom pieces of sheet metal are resistance-seam welded around the perimeter. There are two different ports installed on one of the bladder skin corners of the flat jacks; these ports allow fluid to fill the unit, and the other port has a relief valve. The fill port is comprised of a check valve. The pressure relief valve is located in the second port; preset to 1,724 kPa (250 psi), the pressure relief valve keeps the load cell from bursting. Bursting of these load cells typically causes a small tear in the metal skin allowing the fluid to leak out without a large catastrophic failure.The effective inflation range of these load cells is between 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) to 254.0 mm (10.0 inches) thick. Different types of fluids can inflate these load cells but the most common and easily accessible fluid for testing applications is water. Water pressure from the mine supply line can inflate these load cells to the desired load. Depending on the pre-stressing requirements, a pneumatic powered pump, hydraulic pump, or hand pump may be required to inflate the load cells."

Western Energy Co.'s Rosebud mine in Colstrip, MT, has implemented innovative mining techniques in the past,* and following in that tradition, new techniques for overburden removal were recently introduced at the Montana coal mine. In April 1979, falling coal production left Western Energy in a bind. At that time the company was one of the first to implement a dozer/scraper stripping system for additional stripping capacity. This time around, however, the challenge was to eliminate spoil rehandle with a dragline while digging down 33 in. "Rehandle will increase 20% by going down an additional 3 m past the 24-m level," according to Bob Cope, mine supervisor for Western Energy. To cut this additional expense by eliminating the need to rehandle, Western now uses scrapers to bench down for the dragline. This system utilizes the flexibility of scrapers as earthmoving tools. Although scrapers were originally purchased to fill an immediate need for productive, low-cost overburden stripping, they are now benching and continue to optimize the overall effectiveness of existing draglines. According to the company, the draglines couldn't keep up with production requirements if they had to rehandle spoil material. Benching with the scrapers eliminates spoil rehandle. Western Energy expects to produce 10.6 Mt of coal this year from three active pits in the Rosebud mine. Western estimates that there are enough coal reserves at Rosebud to support a 40-50 year operation. The sub-biturninous coal has an energy value of 9.2-9.4 Mj, 0.87% sulfur, 8% ash, and 20% moisture. Pit A, approximately 610 m long and 45-55 m wide, is the mine's greatest producer. A Marion 8050 dragline with a 46-ms bucket digs 30-33 m to uncover the 7.3-m Rosebud coal seam. Here, the scrapers were put to work benching for the dragline. Long Construction Co., which operates the mine equipment for Western Energy, uses four Caterpillar 637 tandem-powered scrapers, two Cat 631s and two Terex TS-24s. The number and combination of scrapers actually used for benching periodically changes, depending on which ones are needed for topsoil removal and reclamation. Scrapers benched down about 9 m and removed nearly 2.3 Mm of over-burden at pit A. About 1 Mm was placed in a 9-m lift on top of the high-wall at the head of the pit. The existence of a critical size buildup in an autogenous or SAG mill can be predicted from proper examination of drill core and ore samples. Methods of dealing with such critical size in a primary mill are reviewed in the context of ore properties, whether or not pilot plant-scale testwork has been conducted, and also with respect to the design of new plants or the retrofitting of existing operations. The implications of not planning for pebble crushing in situations where it is appropriate are discussed.

A sampling program was conducted in 2008 to determine the run of mine characteristics of 5 coal seams. The sampling program included size analyses and float sink determinations. The samples were analyzed for ash and mercury concentrations for each size and gravity fraction. Despite numerous empirical, numerical, and hybrid studies conducted on the subject of coal rib failure, mine fatalities related to rib failures continue to occur. To date, a standard methodology for the design of coal rib supports which can accommodate the wide range of unique conditions found in coal mines in the United States has not been developed, forcing mine operators to rely on the trial-and-error process or industrial legacy practices for the design of coal rib support patterns. In this study, to better understand the support systems' effectiveness, various rib bolting scenarios were investigated. A coal mass constitutive model is implemented to a Distinct Element Method (DEM) code, and rib factor-of-safety (RibFOS) analyses were performed by applying strength-reduction for the coal matrix and explicitly modeled face cleats. Ribs with various overburden depths and mining heights composed of solid Banded-Bright coal (BBC) were considered in this study. Different scenarios such as rib bolt length and the number of bolts were studied to quantify the effect of primary rib support density on rib stability. As a result of the unsupported coal rib analyses, a decaying exponential relationship is proposed between the mining height-overburden depth and the RibFOS. The developed coal rib models clearly show the coal-rib bolt interaction and illustrate how the addition of rib bolts restricts the movement of the coal rib. The results reveal that the strength reduction method in DEM code with the coal-mass model can aid in the development of practical primary support charts, which can help in the rib support design process.
