"In 2004 works started for the now completed seven-level automated car park accommodating 480 parking spaces inside the pre-existent “Morelli cave”, located in a strategic area in Naples. Since 470 BC Greeks initiated the growth of the fascinating world of the underground Naples, of which this cave belongs. It seems that once here the god Mithras was worshiped. It’s also became a quarry for tuff extraction and in 1600s it became an aqueduct serving the area. In 1853 the Bourbon Tunnel, a project commissioned by King Ferdinand II of Bourbon to allow easy escape from the Royal Palace in case of riots, was connected to this network of tunnels. The cavern became an air raid shelter during the Second World War, then a deposit of cars and motorcycles in the '50s and' 60s, a disposal area and it has been abandoned in the last 40 years before it’s new utilization. INTRODUCTION Over time, the overcrowding and congestion of major cities’ historic centres has led to seeking spaces underground that can accommodate activities and car parks, as in the case of the Morelli cavity, site of the future car park by that name. Before describing its characteristics, design solutions, and executive problems, it is necessary to introduce the site historically into the broader landscape of the cavities present below ground in the municipality of Naples. The province of Naples, which includes the area of the Municipality of Naples, has a large number of cavities. The existence of “Naples underground” is connected with the morphological and geological conformation of its territory, consisting of tuff stone which has entirely special features of lightness, brittleness, and stability. The first transformations in the territory’s morphology, taking place thanks to the Greeks starting from 470 BC, initiated the growth of the fascinating world of Naples underground. These transformations were dictated by water provision requirements, which led to the creation of underground cisterns to collect rainwater, and by the need to recover construction material to erect the buildings of Neapolis. In subsequent centuries, the city’s expansion led to the construction of a proper aqueduct, which allowed drinking water to be collected and distributed thanks to a series of cisterns linked to a dense network of tunnels. During Roman rule, the existing aqueduct was expanded and perfected, but with the rise of the Angevins in 1266, the city saw great urban expansion, which obviously corresponded with increased extraction of tuff from the subsoil to construct new buildings. This confirmed a particular feature of Naples: that of having been generated from its own innards, with buildings rising directly above the quarry that provided their building material."

This is an extension of the work on recovery of silver and manganese from Ag-Mn ores, and recovery of silver and gallium from flue dust from phosphate industry. Carbon adsorption was considered as the most adequate method for recovery of silver from thiourea leach solutions. For this reason it was decided to examine the characteristics of adsorption of silver on activated carbon. Coconut hard shell activated carbon was used for this study. Ag(TU)2C1 complex was dissolved into thiourea solution to give 2 gpl stock solution. Thy studied parameters were: loading isotherms at 25°C, 35°C, and 45°C, initial kinetics as a function of thiourea concentration, temperature, pH, N2, and O2. It was found that the loading capacity of carbon for silver and thiourea was 137-150 mg/g and 514 mg/g, respectively, at 25 °C.

In this study, a unique excavation system was characterized, utilizing waterjet technology as the primary tool for material removal during rehabilitation of reinforced concrete and shotcrete structural liners. Through empiric testing, this research seeks to validate the hypothesis that waterjet removal of these support systems will result in less unintended damage than conventional removal methods. The intent is to develop a viable technology that will reduce the collateral damage caused to surrounding liners during excavation, improve the adhesion between shotcrete and the substrate for longer lasting ground support, and improve overall safety for workers in underground environments. An analysis on the fracture mechanisms and operating parameters of each method was completed. Instrumented shotcrete panels were physically tested and examined through visual inspection and ground penetrating radar (GPR) to compare substrate damage according to each testing method. After testing was completed, the data strongly indicates that waterjet cutting causes less collateral damage to the surrounding intact liner and substrate when compared to that of conventional impact hammers. This research is intended to provide a scientific basis for additional applied research in the rapid excavation and repair of shotcrete support systems.

Introduction The Gold Quarry gold deposit is the largest bulk tonnage epithermal gold deposit in northeastern Nevada to be developed by Newmont Gold Co., formerly known as Carlin Gold Mining Co. Exploration and development of the deposit extended over a period of nearly 50 years before bulk tonnage mining became economically feasible. Proven reserves at Gold Quarry are currently estimated at more than 255 t (8.2 million oz.) of gold, accounting for more than 40% of the total Carlin Trend mineable reserves for 1986. Milling began in late 1985; dump leaching of lower grade ores began in May of 1986. The mill has exceeded the initial design throughput rate of 6.3 kt/d (7000 stpd) and is now processing more than 8 kt/d (9000 stpd). The dump leach facility will process more than 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lower grade ores in 1986. The Gold Quarry ore body is to be developed by an open pit that will eventually be 1830 m (6000 ft) long, 1220 m (4000 ft) wide and 300 m (1000 ft) deep. The mine currently produces 77 kt/d (85,000 stpd) on a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day workweek. Planned pit production will increase to nearly 168 kt/d (185,000 stpd) in 1988. Production equipment currently includes one Demag H-/285, three Komatsu PC-1500 hydraulic shovels, two Cat 992C loaders and 21 90 to 135 t (100 to 150 st) haul trucks. Within this context limestone has truely become an "urban ore". Its uses extend from traditional aggregate markets to lawn and garden, archetectual, chemical, agricultural, industrial, and environmental applications. This paper looks at both the occurance and uses of limestone in the northeast, and briefly examines changing patterns in consumptive use.

For traditional underhand cut-and-fill mining operations, it can be challenging to design a suitable cemented paste backfill (CPB) mix that can meet the necessary strength requirements and yet maintain its ductility. In deep underground metal mines, the CPB must achieve a high enough strength to be competent under high stress conditions while also remaining ductile enough to withstand high strain from squeezing ground as underhand mining continues under backfilled stopes. To eliminate ground falls that result in injuries and fatalities, researchers from the Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have partnered with Aerix Industries, a producer of concrete additives, to study the effects of foaming agents on the strength and ductility of CPB. This laboratory study examines the impact of various amounts of foam additive on the strength and ductility of CPB mix designs, using binder and tailings provided by Hecla Limited from the Lucky Friday Mine

I truly free enterprise system requires free and unrestricted competition among a diversity of suppliers, in order to function properly. The natural attrition of the marketplace tends on the one hand to narrow the competitive field ... but the flow of new competitors entering the arena provides a "diluting" effect, and a "balanced" market place. Without the ready flow of new business entrants, the market becomes increasingly concentrated in the hands of fewer and. fewer firms. Competition among suppliers is diminished and the "free" marketplace suffers accordingly. A number of organizations, both governmental and private, have recently expressed grave con¬cern over the competitive future of the Western coal market. While most have noted that there is currently adequate competition within the Western market, some have cited the growing con¬centration of coal ownership ... particularly federal lease ownership ... in the hands of a relatively few firms. They suggest that unless this apparent trend is reversed or at least stemmed, the number of new firms entering the federally-dominated West may become reduced to the point where competition will suffer.

The function of the geological engineer is to assist in mine planning and operations by collecting, interpreting, and applying geologic data to the solution of engineering problems. The geologist supports this effort by collecting additional geologic information specifically useful to the engineer. This use of geologic information reinforces the value of mine geology to the mining process beyond the traditional role of orebody definition. Work discussed includes: evaluation of caving strategies at the Climax and Henderson mines; support definition and slope stability at the Climax mine; and some uses of geology in cavability estimation for the Mount Emmons project.

The high costs and environmental problems associated with making iron and steel in the United states is driving the development of new technologies to replace the blast furnace. A prototype reactor incorporating rocket technology was designed and built. This rapid rate reactor was operated successfully and consistently made iron metal. Minus 32s-mesh magnetite particles could be reduced to iron metal in less than 50 ms in a high temperature flow through reactor. Iron product was recovered inside the reactor and in a downstream cyclonic separator. The results of typical operation and how parametric changes affected the reduction of iron ore concentrates are discussed.

Of all the fossil fuels produced in the U. S., coal is by far the most abundant. U. S. reserves amount to an estimated 1.5 trillion tons, 2,500 times the 600 million tons produced in 1970. Although it would not be possible to recover all of this coal economically with current mining technology, a significant portion would be available given the proper circumstances. With existing technology, approximately one-eighth of these reserves is accessible, an amount which would last for several hundred years at the 1970 level of production. On the face of it, this substantial reserve should go a long way in meeting the Nation's energy needs. But coal offers special problems. As additional coal is mined and then burned, there are increased costs to the Nation's land, water, skies, and health. Hence, coal poses a dilemma because of its dual status as one of our most abundant domestic fuels and as one of our major sources of environmental degradation. Against the benefits that would be chalked up in the areas of national security, balance of trade, and economic well-being from the increased use of coal, we must enter on the debit side of the ledger the increased environmental cost. This paper reviews the use of U.S. fossil fuel, the drawbacks of coal as an energy source, the means being developed to overcome these drawbacks, and the background behind the present sulfur emission regulations relative to coal combustion. It also discusses in detail the Federal Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) current policies to ensure the continued use of coal as a major source of energy for fossil-fuel fired power plants.

Platinum electrodes are not inert as originally thought to be. The reactivity of platinum electrodes can explain their erratic behavior in many electrochemical measurements of metallurgical interest, e.g., in flotation systems, streaming potential measurements, contact-angle measurements, and in leaching systems. The anomalous behavior of platinum electrodes in redox potential measurements in aqueous systems was studied through Eh and pH measurements in water-oxygen, iron-water-oxygen and manganese-water-oxygen systems. Stability relations between Fe++ and Fe(OH)3 and between Fe(OH)2 and Fe(OH)3 were studied to judge the correspondence between experimental and theoretical equilibrium lines. The practicality of redox potential measurements in estimating ferric-ferrous ratios in aqueous systems was investigated along with their suitability as indicators in leaching operations, e.g., the removal of iron by aeration from manganese leach solutions.

Large scale equipment can reduce both capital and operating costs for concentrators. Large semiautogenous mills can be effectively utilized in big mills but they must be kept fully loaded to take advantage of their great potential. With varying hardness ores, controlling throughput is difficult and careful design must take this into consideration. A variable speed drive on large primary semi- autogenous mills can overcome this problem to a considerable degree. This paper provides a base case using standard accepted technology of two wound rotor single speed 4,476 kW (6,000 hp) motors to drive the primary SAG mills of a hypothetical 36,364 mtpd (40,000 stpd) typical porphyry copper mill. One other fixed speed drive will be described and five variable speed drive configurations will be reviewed. Capital costs for the entire grinding circuit, from crusher product to flotation feed, were developed for the base case and each of the alternatives. A technical evaluation comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each drive is presented.

I am Alfred E. Michon, Vice President- International for Burlington Northern Inc. I work for BN's holding company and my responsibilities include co-ordinating the activities of our eight subsidiary companies as they relate to international commerce--an increasingly important aspect of the overall business of our company. Until last April, I was President of the Fort Worth and Denver and Colorado and Southern railroads, subsidiaries of BN. Prior to that, I headed the marketing and pricing area of BN's coal transportation business. Based on my experience in the energy industry, both domestic and international, I would like to discuss the world-wide trend towards the reliance on low-sulfur coal in lieu of natural gas and oil for the generation of electricity. Since pontification on the energy scene world- wide is best left to consultants with scenario-spitting computers, let me in- stead emphasize this trend through two examples. First I will describe the regulatory and economic factors which have encouraged the replacement of natural gas by low sulfur coal as a boiler fuel in the US. BN's investments in track and equipment were instrumental in this conversion. Secondly, I will show how this same combination of factors has created a large demand for steam coal in the Far East. Again, our company's strategy is to facilitate conversion to coal overseas through timely and sufficient investments.

The acid rain legislation has passed into law. This new law has caused the power generation community to investigate alternative methods to obtain compliance with the new legislation. One thing all of the power companies have concluded is the answer is not easy. Do we switch fuels to burn all low sulfur compliance coal? Maybe possibly only partial desulfurization by means of a dry sorbent system? Or, finally, maybe a wet scrubber system? Whatever the choice, the power community needs to investigate all of the alternatives. In 1988, ICF Kaiser Engineers, Inc. (ICF KE) responded to a request by the U.S. Department of Energy for the engineering development of advanced physical fine coal cleaning. ICF KE responded and was awarded a contract to conduct a multi-task program to develop an advanced flotation system to eliminate pyritic sulfur and retain as much energy as possible. ICF KE assembled a team that included members of industry, academia, and industry research organizations to conduct this multi-task program. The program includes sixteen (16) tasks. This team had personnel to help solve some of the anticipated problems and to provide industry prospective on the viability and commercial potential for any concepts proposed. The primary team consists of a major coal producer, Babcock and Wilcox, Eimco Process Equipment Company, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

This paper summarizes and evaluates data on mine subsidence ground movements and associated damage for houses in Illinois. Based on the data collected, the response of homes to subsidence ground movements is expressed in terms of repair costs. A damage criteria is then proposed that relates the ground movements and damage levels. The data were collected as part of a comprehen¬sive study performed for the Illinois Abandoned ?Lined Lands Reclamation Council, A -M-RC, by the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Illinois, and probably will be published in late 1934 by the council. The study concentrated its efforts on surface ground movements and the effects to houses over abandoned room and pillar mines. The resultant surface subsidences are commonly dish or bowl shaped and are termed sags. Method of Analysis The steps in analysis used to arrive at the proposed damage criteria are: 1. Canvas and rap subsidence damage in houses, 2. Assess the associated ground movements, 3. Estimate the damage repair cost, 4. Develop a damage/repair level classifica¬tion, 5. Correlate the associated ground movement, damage/repair level and home construction type, 6. Propose a damage criteria.

Roof bolting typically follows the extraction of a commodity to help keep the roof from collapsing. During 2004 to 2013, roof bolter operators had the highest number of machinery-related injuries, accounting for 64.7 percent, at underground coal mines. This paper analyzes U.S. roof bolter fatal and nonfatal lost-time injury data at underground work locations for all commodities from 2004 through 2013 and determines risk indices for six roof bolting tasks. For fatal and nonfatal incidences combined, the roof bolting tasks in order of the highest to lowest risk index were bolting, handling of materials, setting the temporary roof support (TRS), drilling, tramming, and traversing. For fatalities, the roof bolting tasks in order of the highest to lowest risk index were handling of materials, setting the TRS, bolting, drilling, traversing, and tramming. Age was found to be a significant factor. Severity of injury, indicated by days lost, was found to increase with increasing age as well as with increasing experience, largely due to the confounding of age and experience. The operation of the roof bolting machine used in underground mining should be a research priority given the high frequency and severity of incidents. The results also suggest that temporal factors may exist, so additional research is warranted to better understand these factors and potentially develop interventions. This research provides a datadriven foundation from which future research can be conducted for safety interventions to reduce the frequency and severity of incidences involving the roof bolter activities of bolting, handling of materials, and setting the TRS.

Introduction Rod mills are horizontal, cylindrical, rotating, tumbling mills in which steel rods, that are usually about 6 in. shorter than the length of the grinding chamber, are used for grinding media. Fig. 33 shows a cutaway view of a rod mill. Rod mills were first used around 1910 because of their ability to grind in open circuit, consistently produce a uniformly sized prod¬uct, give greater continuous availability, and give lower maintenance costs. They have basically replaced roll crushers and coarse grinding ball mills in comminution flowsheets. The present 20-ft limit on rod length, based on rod manufacturing methods, and the pulp flow char¬acteristics, that influence mill capacity, have established the maximum rod mill sizes' of 15 x 21 Vs ft using 20-ft rods and drawing from 2,200 to 2,300 hp. Rod Mill Uses. The principal uses for rod mills are: preparing feed for ball or pebble mills, grinding gravel or aggregates to the size analysis required for making concrete sand, preparing coarse agitator feed for leaching operations, and for primary grinding circuits, particularly in industrial mineral applications. Wet grinding is the most frequently used grinding process for rod milling. There are a few special cases where dry rod milling is used. Preparing feed for ball or pebble mills is the most common use for rod mills. In ferrous and nonferrous ore concentrators, wet open-circuit grinding is used to prepare ball-mill feed. Figs. 34 thru 37 show the four basic grinding circuits used in these concentrators. In rod mill-ball mill grinding circuits, where the rod-mill discharge contains 25% or more of the grinding circuit product-size material, the rod-mill discharge can be fed to the ball- or pebble-mill classifier as shown in Fig. 34. This is the most frequently used rod mill-ball mill circuit in the nonferrous ore concentrators. In a few concentrators such as Anaconda's Weed concentrator,55 the rod mill discharges to one classification stage which makes the same or a slightly coarser particle-size cut as the classifiers used to close the ball- or pebble¬mill circuits, as shown in Fig. 35. In concentrators where rod mill-ball mill circuits are used to grind low grade magnetic iron ores such as Reserve Mining Co., Silver Bay, Minn.; Erie Mining Co., Hoyt Lakes, Minn.; Eveleth Taconite Co., Forbes, Minn.; US Steel, Mt. Iron, Minn. and Atlantic City, Wyo.; Inland Steel-Jackson County Iron Co., Black River Falls, Wis.; and The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., Adams mine, Kirkland Lake, Ont., the rod mills discharge to rougher magnetic separators (cobbers), the concentrates from which are fed to a ball milling stage as shown in Fig. 36. The same basic circuit is also used with gravity concentra¬tion methods such as spirals (Hanna Mining Co., Groveland, Mich.), tables (St. Joe Minerals, Bonne Terre, Mo.), and jigs. When the rod-mill discharge contains less than 25% of the grind¬ing circuit product size, this indicates an ore that does not readily produce the fines needed to help carry the coarse feed into the ball charge. When this occurs, the fines in the rod-mill discharge are needed in the ball mill or pebble mill so the rod-mill discharge flows direct to the second-stage mills as shown in Fig. 37. Rod mills are used to make feed for open-circuit ball mills such as those used in wet grinding cement raw material (American Cement, Brennan Ave¬nue plant, Detroit, Mich., and Port Huron, Mich., plant, and at the South Dakota State Cement plant, Rapid City, S. Dak.). Grinding gravel or aggregates to the size analysis required for making concrete sand is used in areas where natural sand of the proper particle size gradation required to make concrete is not availa¬ble. Three-quarter inch crushed aggregate is ground to 4 mesh using center peripheral-discharge rod mills (Fig. 38) operating in open circuit. US Corps of Engineers specifications state that the sand product be 93-100% passing 4 mesh and contain no more than 3-7% passing 200 mesh. It may be necessary to classify the rod-mill discharge to remove any excess -200 mesh sand produced in the rod mill. Particu¬larly when processing aggregate with high abrasion indices, center peripheral-discharge rod mills are used instead of hammer mills, fine bowl crushers, and crushing rolls for the production of specification sand. "Recirculation is prohibited in many coal mining countries because of the fear that the re-use of return air would allow the build-up of air contaminants at the workings. The incorrect design and location of a booster fan in any ventilation network can create unsafe condition due to recirculation. The current approach to investigating recirculation using simulation software requires manual effort which becomes tedious in a complex and a large network. An algorithm-based C++ program was designed to detect the recirculation in a booster fan ventilation networks. This program needed an input file prepared from output file generated by any ventilation simulator. This program created an output file for recirculation. This program demonstrated the strong capability to detect the recirculation in a sample network and a coal mine ventilation network. The outcomes of this program were documented in this paper. INTRODUCTION The proper design and location of booster fans eliminate the safety hazards associated with high main fan pressure. Conversely, the incorrect design of booster fans in any ventilation network can create unsafe conditions due to uncontrolled recirculation. The proper utilization of a booster fan derives benefits to reduce the main fan pressure, leakage, and consequently ventilation cost especially with high resistance network due to deep and extensive working area in a mine. However installation of booster fan may create uncontrolled recirculation, if it is not sized and located properly with respect to main fan. Recirculation is prohibited in many coal mining countries because of the fear that the reuse of return air would allow the build-up of air contaminants at the workings. Therefore, it is imperative to check the recirculation while designing and operating booster fan for a ventilation network. This paper deals with an algorithm based C++ program to detect the recirculation in a booster fan ventilation networks. This program was implemented to detect the recirculation in a sample network and a coal mine network. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The currently available ventilation simulation programs do not give much information about recirculation for the generated solution (fan pressures). The current approach to investigating recirculation using simulation software requires manual effort, i.e., traversing from node to node in the output network by the simulator while keeping tracks of all the nodes that form recirculation paths. This is an easy task in a simple ventilation network, but it becomes tedious and sometimes very confusing in a complex and large network. Moreover, the presence of multiple recirculation paths makes the manual effort more complex and difficult, especially in separating multiple loops that are connected together. Thus, there is a need for a more efficient program that will detect and quantify the recirculation efficiently, for the generated fan pressures. A program is developed to detect the recirculation(s) in a network."
