"Money and reputations can be lost in bad projects. Causes of bad mineral processing projects include poor contract definition and purchase of equipment without adequate test work. However, the root cause of many of the problems that can lead to bad projects is not any inanimate object, bad weather or catastrophic natural event but the people working on the projects. Because the people are so critical to the success of a mineral processing project, one must have suitably qualified and experienced people (SQEP) in all key positions. Characteristics that define SQEP include people who have successfully executed projects of similar size before; have undertaken projects treating the same minerals and producing the same valuable products and people who are familiar with designing, operating and implementing the required technologies and unit operations.To minimize the likelihood of future bad mineral processing projects, five recommendations are put forward in relation to the people aspect of a project.1. Attempt to retain SQEP during any down turn in the mining economic cycle so thatthe knowledge and experience can be kept within the industry.2. Increase the effort in attracting young people into the industry and retaining them.3. Set up robust training program to give young professionals a firm foundation of what real life projects and operations are like.4. Provide mentoring and continuous training for people after they have completed their formal graduate training program. Their career progression should be appropriately monitored and controlled.5. People working in projects must be exposed to as many detailed design and other finer issues as possible so that they can comprehend the amount of work required to deliver a project successfully."

The principal thrust of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Coal Preparation R&D Program is to develop technology to reduce the ash and sulfur contents of United States coals to levels such that the resultant product can be formulated into a high quality solid or slurry fuel that could replace oil or natural gas in both new and retrofit applications. Specifically, the objective is to develop and refine cost-effective physical and chemical beneficiation processes to extract 85-95 percent of the total sulfur and ash. The Coal Preparation program is implemented by the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) and is conducted both in-house and by a cross section of industrial organizations, universities, and national laboratories. Research is subdivided into three areas -coal characterization, beneficiation, and ancillary unit operations. This paper will provide a brief overview of many of the research projects being carried out in these areas in fiscal year 1984.

Canada's coal production is approximately 65.4 million tonnes of which 95 % is produced by surface mining methods mostly from the three Western provinces (British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan). The mines are highly mechanized; productivity gains during the past few years have ranged from 60 -80%. Truck/Shovel methods are common although Saskatchewan lignite is almost exclusively mined by draglines. This paper provides an overview of Canadian Coal mining industry vis a vis surface mining. Emphasis is on application and utilization of mining equipment and associated mining methods.

A glauconitic siltstone sample with a potash content of 10% is investigated as a potential potash source. The fine grain structure comprises potash bearing phases of glauconite, muscovite, and microcline. The as-received samples showed poor dissolution ~ 5%. Planetary ball milling was attempted for the dissociation of the underlying silicate structure for the potash release, and ~ 60% potash was obtained after 12-h milling. Mechanical activation (8 h, 60% NaOH) prior to heat treatment (600 °C, 30 min) was found successful in recovering more than 95%K values from glauconite. The final residue consists mainly of quartz, indicating a complete breakdown of the silicate matrix. The mechanical activation process followed is simple, adaptable, and less energyintensive compared to existing methods.

"INTRODUCTIONThe shales of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) have been known to experience time-dependent deformations (TDD); those initiated by excavation-induced stress relief which progress with time as a function of rock porewater salinity, access to freshwater (or air) of lower salinity, clay and calcite content, and the buildup of swelling pressures within the rock mass. These deformations can induce long-term pressures on shaft walls and tunnel linings, especially if the permanent works are constructed soon after excavation, with very little time delay. This paper presents measurements of time dependent deformation of recent shaft and tunnel projects constructed in the GTA, and draws conclusions regarding the main influences on the TDD. The key input parameters for the numerical predictive model are critically assessed. Projects which are discussed include the Billy Bishop Airport Pedestrian Tunnel, Hydro One Midtown Tunnel and Hanlan Feedermain (Contract 3).MECHANISM OF TIME DEPENDENT DEFORMATIONExplanation of MechanismThe Georgian Bay Shale unit consists of typically moderately weathered to fresh, grey to dark grey, fine to very fine grained fissile shale interbedded with slightly weathered to fresh grey, fine grained calcareous siltstone and limestone interbeds. There are two distinctive features of the shale in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). One is a high horizontal stress regime, and the second is long-term time dependent swelling behavior which develops when the following factors occur (Lo and Micic, 2010):• Stress relief of the rock mass• Outward salt concentration gradient from pore fluid of the rock to the ambient fluid• Availability of fresh waterThe swelling is a consequence of the reduction in confined stress in the rock which occurs upon excavation in combination with a differential gradient in salinity between the saline rock porewater and freshwater or even humid air. Osmotic and diffusive processes result in a decrease in the salinity of the rock porewater achieved by an overall increase in the water content, resulting in volumetric expansion of the shale rock over time. INTRODUCTION The Sunnyside mines of Kaiser Steel Corp. are lo¬cated on the west flank of the Book Cliff Range, a tongue of the Wasatch mountain range in Utah. The mines are 193.12 air km (120 air miles) southeast of Salt Lake City and 40.23 km (25 miles) east of the town of Price. The area has a semiarid climate with an an¬nual rainfall of 304.8 to 381 mm (12 to 15 in.) and a temperature range of -23.3 to 32.2°C (-10 to 90°F). The base of the Book Cliff Range is approximately 1981 m (6500 ft) in elevation with some mountain peaks in excess of 3048 m (10,000 ft) (Fig. 1). The Sunnyside mines were opened in the late 1890s and have been operated continuously since that time. Kaiser Steel leased the No. 2 mine in 1942 and pur¬chased the entire property in 1950. There are three mines adjacent to one another, each with its separate access, ventilation, and haulage. The three mines en¬compass an area extending 12.87 km (8 miles) along the outcrop and dipping northeasterly 2.41 to 3.22 km (11/z to 2 miles) into the Book Cliffs. During 1975, only the No. I and No. 3 mines were operating to sup¬ply 908 184.7 t/a (1,000,000+ stpy) of clean coal to the Kaiser Steel mill at Fontana, CA. Sunnyside coal is blended with coal from the Kaiser Steel mine near Raton, NM, and with purchased coal from noncompany sources to form the mix for the coke ovens. At that time, Sunnyside operated three longwall units and five to seven continuous miner units. Typical production for that time came from one miner unit pillaring an area not conducive to longwall mining; one or two miner units on construction or modernization projects, and the remaining units used to develop future longwall panels. Longwall mining has been a part of the Sunnyside scene since 1961 when the first panel was set up in the lower Sunnyside seam of the No. 3 mine. Through 1975, 27 longwall panels were mined (Fig. 2). Of the more than 47 173 604 t (52,000,000 st) of clean coal that were taken from the property through 1975, 6 350 292.9 t (7,000,000 st) were mined by longwall methods. Coal was brought to the surface in 4.5-t (5-st) mine cars and crushed to -152.4 mm (-6 in.) before entering the preparation plant. Coarse coal is cleaned by Baum jigs and fine coal (-28 mesh) is cleaned in flotation cells. The coal is reduced to 50.8 x 0 mm (2 x 0 in.) and belted to an aboveground storage pile with a ca¬pacity of approximately 113 398.1 t (125,000 st). The coal is gravity fed through two 1.52-m (5-ft) diam culverts directly into railroad cars, which pass beneath the storage pile through an arched excavation. Eighty-four 90.7-t (100-st) cars make up a unit train which makes the round trip to the steel mill in four days. Additional trains are scheduled in as demands dictate. Loading rates in excess of 13 607.8 t/h (15,000 stph) have been attained. Geology The coal seams of this area are of Cretaceous age and are classed as a medium volatile bituminous coal. coal, with a sulfur content less than 1 % and 6 to (20-mile) zone of the Book Cliffs, and this area is owned or under lease by either Kaiser Steel or US Steel. Coal in adjacent areas is noncoking but an excellent steam coal, with a sulfur content of less than 1 % and 6 to 7% ash. Sunnyside coal contains 40% volatile, 53% carbon, less than 1 % sulfur, and 51/2 to 61/2 % ash after washing. There are two minable seams throughout most of the Sunnyside property known locally as the upper and lower Sunnyside. Separation between the seams varies from less than 300 mm (1 ft) near the southern boundary adjacent to the US Steel Columbia mine, to over 12.19 m (40 ft) in areas of the No. 3 mine in the center of the Sunnyside property. The upper seam varies in height from 1.2 to 1.98 m (4 to 61/2 ft) while the lower seam varies in height from 1.52 to 4.28 m (5 to 14 ft) in areas of No. I mine where the two seams apparently come together. The majority of early work was con¬centrated in the upper seam which has a stronger roof and a lower sulfur content. When Kaiser Steel began mining the No. 3 mine in the early 1950s, it mined in the lower seam beneath the old workings with conven¬tional and continuous mining equipment. Numerous bounces and pressure points created by unextracted pillars and barriers in the upper seam made this a low¬production, high-cost mine and brought about the ad¬vent of the first longwall system. The first unit, while small by today's standards, successfully mined panels that had been all but given up and saved the mine from closure. There were areas that could not even be mined by longwall because of the erratic extraction in the upper seam. The system was successful enough to allow operations to gain access to and develop virgin areas of the upper seam. Development of longwall mining in the No. 3 mine has been confined to the upper seam since late 1964. With the almost complete extraction afforded by the longwall system, it is felt the lower seam can be successfully worked in future years (Fig. 3). In most of No. 1 mine, only the lower seam (or lower seam and upper seam combined) is minable, except in the northwest portion where a rock split has again separated the seam into two 1.83 to 2.13-m (6 to 7-ft) thick beds. In this area, the upper seam or upper split is being mined. The separation between seams at the present workings in this area varies from 0.609 to 6.1 m (2 to 20 ft). It is hoped that most of the lower split can be mined using shield supports and/or what¬ever new technology is developed in the coming years. The coal seams in this area dip to the northeast at an average grade of 10%. The dip near the outcrop reaches 22% and gradually decreases downdip. Over¬burden ranges from a few meters at the outcrop to 762 m (2500 ft) over some of the deeper workings. In the next several years, some overburden will be in excess of 914 m (3000 ft) as the lower mine workings extend ever deeper under the Book Cliffs. To cope with the

The Archean ores of Western Australia are in total the largest producers of gold in Australia. In addition to numerous small and medium sized deposits, the province also contains the giant Kalgoorlie Golden Mile deposits. A variety of different gold ore mineralogical associations has lead to the development of a number of different processing routes for both refractory and non-refractory ore types. Intense weathering and lateritization of Archean greenstones in the semi-arid Yilgarn region have resulted in the development of a deeply oxidized profile (60-100m) above most sulphide orebodies. Residual and re-deposited supergene gold within iron oxide/silica gangue of this zone responds well to CIP, CIL, heap and vat leaching techniques. Although gold is easily liberated in principal from oxidized gangue, in practice recoveries are sometimes affected by iron oxide coatings on gold grains, and by clay minerals which can interfere with plant performance. Refractory ore types in the Eastern Goldfields fall into three main categories - pyritic, arsenopyritic and telluride-bearing. Pyritic ores may be either free milling or require roasting. The difference appears to depend largely on whether gold occurs along grain boundaries or fractures, which can be liberated by grinding, or whether gold occurs as inclusions within pyrite grains and therefore cannot be satisfactorily liberated by grinding. Arsenopyrite bearing ores are not well understood and are complicated by what appears to be a variable degree of gold solid solution, in addition to included gold. Gold occurring in complex gold-silver telluride assemblages has traditionally been recovered by roasting in the Eastern Goldfields.

Within the Pofadder district of Namaqualand, South Africa, economically exploited deposits of bedded barite and zinc-lead-silver-copper sulfides occur in close proximity within highly metamorphosed mid-Proterozoic pre-tectonic para¬gneisses of the Namaqualand Metamorphic Complex (NMC) (figure i). The paragneisses belong to the Bushmanland Group (SACS, 1980) that comprises a relatively straight-forward regional sequence of basal leucogneisses, intermediate mica-sillimanite schists and glassy quartzites, and a mixed upper zone of banded iron formations (BIF), minor marbles, quartz muscovite schists and localised uppermost quartz-pebble conglomerates and amygdaloidal mafic gneisses (Joubert, 1974) (figure ii). The base metal and barite mineralisation occurs in close association with BIFs, generally above the glassy quartzites, although in some cases possibly below them. In the regional context, the Bushmanland Group paragneisses are, to the north, intercalated with and ultimately replaced by meta-volcanic sequences of talc-alkaline affinity (Reid, 1977) belonging to the Orange River Group (SACS, 1980). The metavolcanics are generally of acidic to intermediate composition and show evidence of subaerial formation from 'high altitude shield volcanism' with many acidic ashflow and welded tuff bands, mesocratic and lesser melanocratic lavas and some fanglomerates (Ritter, 1980). To the south and east, the schist/quartzite associations are initially intercalated with and eventually replaced by cordierite gneiss/metacarbonate/biotite gneiss associations of shallow marine affinity (Moore, 1980a). The Bushmanland Group paragneisses appear to represent sedimentary material in the extreme distal portions of a talc-alkaline volcanic environment adjacent to a shallow platform sea.

Rock mass properties testing for determining strength parameters is an integral part of geomechanics. These tests are performed either in a laboratory environment or in a field (in-situ). The authors share their experience in using numerical modelling in simulating the laboratory test procedures. This approach helps studying the rock breakage and failure mechanism more efficiently and provides a high degree of visualization. Moreover, imperfections and discontinuities can be easily incorporated in these models. This capability of providing arbitrary fractures and discontinuities facilitates in building a large knowledgebase of rock strength and failure mechanisms. This knowledgebase may then be used to generate heuristics for determining rock strengths for rock mass with fractures and discontinuities.

The Lower Cretaceous McMurray Formation in northern Alberta contains bituminous sands interbedded with other sediments which form the reject encountered during mining operations. Grade prediction is based on a combination of geological interpretation, computer modelling and past mining experience. In addition to estimates for ore, an accurate estimate of "waste" or "reject," are required for Mine Planning. This study investigates the ability of point-kriging using geostatistics, to augment the existing data base of drill-holes in a study area on Syncrude's leases. This approach enables the assessment of potential "worst" case - "best" case scenarios within the context of Mine Planning.

Naturally occurring arsenic has been detected in water from inactive mines and several wells in the Keystone area of the Black Hills. Keystone City Well #4 showed a total arsenic concentration of 69 parts per billion (ppb) during pumping in 2004. The well is not used currently except for arsenic-removal research. Water also can be pumped from a mine shaft in the abandoned Keystone ? Columbia ? Bullion gold mines, whose interconnected workings flooded after mining ceased in the 1930s. This water has been considered for local supplies, although it would require treatment or blending because of arsenic concentrations. According to historical records, the Bullion Mine produced 100,000 pounds of white arsenic. An aquifer test on the mine workings was performed at a pumping rate of about 550 gallons per minute. The arsenic concentration in pumped water was 33 ppb. In addition to wells within Keystone, samples from the water supply at nearby Mount Rushmore National Memorial have shown arsenic concentrations greater than 10 ppb, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency?s maximum contaminant level for arsenic in drinking water. Limestone-based technology for removal of arsenic from drinking water is an innovative and promising method that has been considered for treatment of water at Keystone. In batch testing with water from Keystone Well #4, limestone removed about 65% of arsenic from solution. A related problem of arsenic removal from drinking water involves disposal of the waste product, which is critical for commercial viability of removal technologies. Current research is investigating thermal stability of the waste in order to determine the potential for recycling of the material during manufacture of cement.

Oil-field brines have been collected and analyzed from Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks in the Mississippi Salt Dome Basin, from Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous rocks, southwestern Arkansas, and from Ordovician and Silurian rocks, southern Michigan. All of these brines are genetically related to evaporites and appear to be brines expelled from halite-bearing rocks, presumably during compaction. The brines in rocks closest to the halite-bearing rocks are uniformly low in lead and zinc suggesting that the metals in metal-rich brines are not acquired within evaporite sequences. The metals in metal- rich brines in Mississippi and in Russia appear to be derived from red beds and may have been originally associated with ferric iron oxyhydroxides. Reduction of these compounds by migrating hydrocarbons appears to release lead and zinc to the associated brines accompanied by the fomation of authigenic ankerite.

Stemming plugs are used as an accessory in drilling and blasting industry. They supplement conventional stemming material (i.e. drill cutting) with retention of gases in the drill hole that result in better fragmentation of rock and improved explosive utilization. Better fragmentation and explosive utilization along with economic benefits enhance efficacy of the project. Incorporation of stemming plugs in drilling and blasting industry is in exercise for about thirty years. The efficiency of stemming plugs is a key factor in their rising induction in mining industry. Different studies have been conducted on the economic viability of these plugs. The focus of this paper is the selection of stemming plugs for a bench blasting operation and the examination of blasting operation efficiency based on ergonomics and human factors. Three types of stemming plugs were evaluated during multiple blasts at a limestone quarry. Their performance was evaluated using split desktop software. Based on the human factors plastic molded stemming plug (stemming plug-1) was found to be the best among all selected plugs. INTRODUCTION Surface mines and quarrying operations heavily depend on bench blasting to achieve high volumetric targets and production demands. Use of explosives is the most economic method adopted for rock breakage and movement. Extensive research had been performed to enhance explosives energy utilization. This include changing the drilling pattern, application of air decks, stemming plugs, and use of other supportive devices. Optimization of explosive energy has been a major concern in those mines that rely on drilling and blasting operation to carry out main production. Due to continually increasing cost, efficient mining demands, and associated hazards of using explosives, it is necessary to utilize explosives at their best. Efficiency of a blasting operation is generally evaluated by the fragmentation size. From post blast conditions at blasting site to efficiency of processing plant, anything can be affected due to improper blast resulting in bad fragmentation. Better fragmentation is necessity for better operation of the system along with consideration of the safety of operation, environmental issues and related costs. For developing a blast design, an engineer should always attempt to minimize the cost of operation without compromising with acceptable technical and safety necessities [1]. Blast performance is dependent on many different factors associated with the process. These factors have been gauged as blast geometry, explosive specification, and rock mass properties [2]. Similarly, in 2013 Mohammad et al. concluded that fragmentation dynamics depends on blast hole diameter, primer, spacing, stemming, burden, and delay timing for blasting operation [1]. At the work site where this study was performed, blast holes were filled by drill cuttings and muds to help in confining gases. In a blast hole, gas confinement helps in better rock fragmentation along with reduced flyrocks. This practice is most common in many countries including Pakistan. Due to lack of homogenized particle size, the effectiveness of confinement is variable and majorly based on the size of stemming. Extremely small sized drill cuttings often result in hole blow out along with flyrocks from the collar. This improper blast energy will result in poor blast, bad impacts on environment, and reduced operational efficiency. In addition to the stemming material, the length of stemming is also a prime consideration. The decrease in stemming length will increase the quantity of explosive in the blast hole and an increase in stemming material generally improves stemming performance.

A multi-layer gangue roof of a steeply dipping coal seam with a large mining height face area was analyzed using physical simulation, numerical simulation, theoretical analysis, and field measurement methods to evaluate the roof deformation and the mechanisms associated with the instability of the hard gangue and soft coal interlayer. The results indicated that the first weighting step of the multi-gangue roof was larger than that of a non-gangue roof, but periodic weighting steps were similar. The overburden collapse height was lower in the multi-gangue roof than in the non-gangue roof due to the buffering and supporting function of the collapsed gangue. Moreover, the failure of the coal interlayer was the key factor in the collapse of the multi-layer gangue. A mechanical model was established for the hard gangue and soft coal interlayer based on a revised Prandtl squeezing theory. The limited load of the interlayer and maximum resistance of the shield support was thusmodeled. The maximum resistance of the support increased with the dip angle of the seam and burial depth. It also increased with the interlayer thickness at thicknesses below 2.75 m. It reached a peak when the interlayer thickness was between 2.75 and 3 m and exhibited a decreasing trend when the thickness was greater than 3 m. The results were confirmed using physical simulation and a field test. Certain measures were proposed to control the stability of the gangue roof, including zoning control of the mining height and resistance and advancing the support while maintaining roof contact, thus ensuring the integrity of the support and surrounding rock system.

"Metro Line 5 in Sao Paulo is being constructed. This lot extends for 4,940 m with twin EPB shield tunnels under a dense and busy urban area, with an excavation diameter of 6.9 m. The tunnels run predominantly in the tertiary soils of Sao Paulo where extensive experience exists from previous EPB shield tunnel projects. However, new experience is being gained in Sao Paulo in shield tunnelling through Saprolite, the weathered product of the underlying Gneiss crystalline basement, through the resulting residual soils and in rock-soil mixed face conditions. Furthermore, experiences in difficult mixed face soil conditions with overconsolidated clay at the face in combination with loose sands at the crown under the groundwater table will be presented. Additionally, the design, operational and controlling approach followed for the shield drive at particular critical cross-sections where the shields were driven close or under buildings. INTRODUCTION Within the framework of Sao Paulo´s metro network expansion, the excavation of the shield tunnels for Metro Sao Paulo Line 5 is currently taking place. The present paper deals with the description of the most relevant features from the construction of the Line 5 – Lot 3 tunnels. The paper presents how particular challenges were dealt maximising potential of EPB shield tunnelling technology. Challenges were posed not only by the difficult boundary conditions of urban shield tunnelling, such as shield drive under buildings, but also by complex geotechnical situations. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The great urban area of São Paulo is one of the biggest cities in the world, with around 20 Million people living in the city and in the suburb area. The city faces great mobility problems and in the last years the government has been investing great amounts on the megacity´s metro expansion. The Line 5 Extension plays an important role to connect the south area to the central area of the city, with a whole extension of 11 kilometres, including 11 new stations. It is estimated that this line will transport almost 900.000 passengers/day. The first stretch of the expansion, Lot 3, consists of two single tunnels, almost 5 kilometres long each, crossing 4 stations. Figure 1 shows details of the Line 5 Expansion."

Introduction Autogenous, semi-autogenous, and conventional grinding circuits are used to process ores. Current emphasis, though, is towards the use of the first two systems. The reason is the generally lower initial investment required for an autogenous or semi-autogenous circuit as compared to a conventional comminution circuit. However, the effect of operating costs that will significantly affect overall comminution economics is not considered in this evaluation. About 70% of the energy in a mineral processing plant is used in the comminution circuit. Until the 1974 oil embargo, energy was relatively inexpensive. Since that time, the cost of energy has escalated 40-fold. As a result, energy cost now forms a significant portion of operating costs in comminution. According to a survey conducted by General Electric Co. (Powers, 1982), the price of electricity will continue to rise 15% to 20% per year, in spite of the current oil glut. Both autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding circuits consume more energy than the conventional comminution circuit. Higher consumption ranging from 16% to 35% has been reported in the literature (Bassarear, 1982; Gjerdrum. 1979; Betts, 1982; and Christie, 1979). Consequently, even a small increase in energy costs is likely to have a significant impact on operating costs. Therefore, the economic decision of selecting an optimal comminution circuit is important. More than ever before, it is now critical to include in the evaluation of communition circuits not only the capital costs, but also the operating costs; in particular, the expected energy cost over the life of the operation. Failure to do this may lead to a less than optimal comminution circuit. Design A comminution system should be designed only after bench-scale or pilot plant testing of a representative sample. Conventional crushing and grinding circuits can be designed on the basis of the Bond Work Index (Rowland and Kjos, 1980). Over the years, sizing of full-scale rod and ball mills from Bond Work Index data has become well established. Autogenous and semi-autogenous mills cannot be sized based on bench-scale tests. Pilot plant tests are necessary to determine the amenability of the ore, critical size buildup, and power requirements. For this study, conventional and semi-autogenous grinding circuits were designed for ore throughput of 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, and 90 kt/d (13,200, 26,400, 39,600, 52,000, 79,200, and 99,000 stpd). It has long been understood that extended occupational exposures to respirable mine dusts can lead to chronic lung disease. In underground coal mines, coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) and silicosis are major concerns. While many efforts have been made with the aim of understanding the mass-based concentrations and silica contents of respirable dusts under a variety of mining conditions, little research has been completed in characterizing dust at the individual particle level (by composition, size and shape). This study employed scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray (SEM-EDX) to analyze dust samples collected from an underground coal mine in Central Appalachia. The results indicated that particle characteristics can vary widely between locations, though many trends might be explained based on knowledge of mining conditions. A continuous personal dust monitor (CPDM) was also used during the collection of some samples to determine respirable dust concentrations, which were compared against estimated concentrations based on the particle-level analysis.

This paper reports on the first 2 years in operation of a special-purpose coal handling rig which provides blending, temperature reduction, and continuous, automatic mechanical sampling as part of midstream barge to ship coal transfers. Briefly reviewing some of the characteristics of coal handling peculiar to midstream transfers, the paper discusses how the most beneficial aspects of midstreaming were enhanced through the design of this blending and sampling rig.
