This Bureau of Mines report describes methane liberation trends from all U.S. coal mines liberating over 100 Mcfd (100,000 cfd) (2.8 Mm3/d). Detailed are results from the latest Bureau survey performed in 1985 and shown are mine and company name, location, coalbed and methane liberation quantity. The report shows that in 1985, there were 180 mines producing more than 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) and the total quantity of methane liberated by these mines was 303,900 Mcfd (8,605 Mm3/d). This data is compared with previous studies performed in 1971 , 1973, 1975, and 1980. From 1971 to 1985, there was a 10% decrease in the number of mines liberating at least 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) but there was a dramatic 34% increase of liberations from these mines. The increase seems to be caused by new mines being developed in deeper, gassier coalbeds, particularly in Alabama. Likewise, in comparing the ten highest liberating mines in 1975, 1980, and 1985, an increase in methane liberations each year was experienced. The report classifies mines by three levels of liberations: greater than 100 Mcfd but less than 500 Mcfd (2.8 to 14 Mm3/d); 500 Mcfd to 1 ,000 Mcfd (1 4 to 28 Mm3/d); and greater than 1,000 Mcfd (>28 Mm3/d). It was found that 87% of liberations were from mines producing over 1,000 Mcfd but these accounted for only 38% of all the mines in the study.

Introduction The US has the largest total (364 Gt, or 401 billion st) and recoverable (182 Gt, or 201 billion st) coal reserves in the world (Steam/Its Generation and Use, 1978). However, progressive coal use in this country has been hampered by environmental constraints, such as restrictions on sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate emissions. Since the promulgation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) New Source Performance Standards (NSPS), it has become apparent that all US coals will require sulfur removal to comply with the new sulfur dioxide emission levels. If more stringent emission standards are imposed, through pending acid rain legislation or amendments to the Clean Air Act, it is likely that the coal industry, and the industrial and utility sectors will look increasingly toward the development of new and advanced coal cleaning technologies to continue and promote the use of coal. Table 1 summarizes the EPA NSPS for sulfur dioxide emissions. Fortunately, the basis for determining sulfur dioxide removal is the Btu and total sulfur content of the run-of-mine coal. Thus, credit is given for any sulfur removed before combustion, e.g., through physical coal cleaning. Unfortunately, physical coal cleaning alone may be unable to produce a compliance coal with respect to the EPA NSPS. Therefore, all industrial and utility coal-fired boilers will require post combustion gas cleanup, e.g., flue gas desulfurization (FGD), to comply with the new regulations. Of these, chemical coal cleaning offers the advantages of providing (1) high quality fuel for combustion (low sulfur and ash, high Btu, and attenuated product variability); (2) a solid fuel product for use in retrofitted gas and oil boilers; and (3) a solid fuel product with multiple end uses, e.g., internal combustion engines, carbon electrodes, coke, or chemical feedstock. Gravimelt process In the Gravimelt process, 1.4 mm x 0 (14 mesh x 0), physically beneficiated coal of about 5% moisture is fed into a 3401 to 3901 C (644 ° to 734 ° F) molten bath of sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. Organic and pyritic sulfur and most of the mineral matter in coal react with and are dissolved in a molten mixture of potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide. The reacted coal sulfur is converted to alkali sulfides and polysulfides, whereas the mineral matter is apparently converted to alkali-aluminum silicates and other byproducts that are water and acid soluble. Coal residence time is 60 to 240 minutes. The sodium hydroxide to potassium hydroxide ratio is about 9:1. The total hydroxide-to-coal ratio is no less than 10:1. The specific gravity of the caustic melt is about 1.8 g/cm3 . Thus, coal is buoyant in the bath, and insoluble mineral matter with density greater than 1.8 g/cm3 would sink. Reacted coal is first water-washed with an equal weight volume of water in a countercurrent mode of operation. The coal is filtered and the filtrate sent for regeneration. The coal is then acid-washed in 10% sulfuric acid. The acid-water/coal mixture is filtered to recover the final coal product, and the filtrate treated with lime to precipitate dissolved mineral matter. The precipitate is filtered from the mixture and discarded. The water is recycled to the plant. Filtrate from water-washing is treated to remove sodium sulfide. The sodium sulfide is chemically treated to produce hydrogen sulfide, calcium car¬bonate, sodium hydroxide, and other products. The hydrogen sulfide is treated to produce sulfuric acid for the acid-washing step. The calcium carbonate is treated further or discarded, and the sodium hydroxide is concentrated by evaporation and recycled to the reactor. The Gravimelt process is currently at the bench-scale stage of development. A 0.9-kg (2-lb) continuous reactor is in operation with a continuous water- and acid-washing section adjacent. The regeneration section is not developed to a meaningful extent, although key reactions have been tested in the laboratory. Process conditions, product recovery efficiencies, etc., however, have not been determined adequately and continuous regeneration operation has not been attempted. Work is now in progress to develop each section to a continuous bench-scale operation in processing coal at 9.1 kg/h (20 lb per hr). Microwave process The carbon and hydrogen in coal are relatively transparent to microwave radiation. However, water, caustic, pyrite, and other mineral matter components are strong conductors of microwave radiation energy at the proper frequency. As a result, selective heating of the noncarbonaceous materials occurs that enables the chemical reaction of sulfur and ash with caustic. Although very high temperatures may result from

Laboratory experiments, using a thermal plasma reactor, have been performed to evaluate: the conversion of ilmenite to TiC or TiC-Fe and the conversion of zircon to ZrC or ZrC-SiC. Results are examined and possible processing routes are identified.

A number of relatively recent factors associated with the design of new metallurgical processing plants have made the effective training of operators a requirement for a successful start-up. Some of these factors include large capital investment in a minimum of processing lines, highly complex process control systems, and stringent regulations on plant effluent, to name a few. More than ever, operating mistakes during the start-up phase can lead to substantial delays in achieving design production, as well as problems with government authorities if permit limits are exceeded. The only way to assure your return on plant investment is to ensure new plant operators have the knowledge to properly run the plant from the outset. A comprehensive set of operating manuals specifically targeted for plant operators and foreman, written by experienced operating personnel, is the only effective way to provide the necessary information for start-up-related training.

This paper examines the application of gelatin mixture models to the study of factors such as gravity effects, tectonic and residual stresses, anisotropy, physical nonlinearity, time-dependent behavior of the rock mass and connectedness of the geologic space. The calibration technique of gelatin mixtures, proposed by Richards and Mark in 1966, is applied to the particular problem considered. Similitude relationships between model and prototype are discussed with reference to the constitutive equations describing the physical behavior of the rock mass. The interaction between two openings in a linearly elastic medium, under conditions of plane strain, is used as an illustrative example, with the view of describing the history of stress and deformation changes on the rock medium and lining around a slusher drift while undercuts are made in block caving.

Although widely quoted throughout the industry, little attention has been given to standardizing the unfired pellet compressive strength test or to determining the characteristics of the test. First of all, I want to thank John Dunlap for asking me to this AIME meeting in Denver. I was first introduced to Denver and The Rocky Mountains more than ten years ago and immediately decided it was one of the most attractive spots in the world. I've come back many times since and still welcome any opportunity to return, even if it means I have to prepare and give a paper on potash. When John Dunlap gave me this assignment, he told me that the program would include papers on the geology of potash, papers on new discovered potash deposits and new mines and asked me to discuss potash from the commercial point of view. He also asked me to include a supply/demand outlook for potash. However, one thing he did not mention was "how far into the future he wanted me to look" and it seems to me the time element is a crucial factor to you who are both geologists and miners as well as to me. In your case, you have to look far enough into the future to give you time to explore, find, evaluate, develop, and bring into production a commercial deposit. My mining associates and friends don't agree on how long that takes but it's probably somewhere in the range of eight to fifteen years. But, they all agree on one thing and that is that the time required is continually getting longer. Now my time problem is just the opposite. It is "relatively" easy, and I stress relatively, to identify and evaluate the importance of the various factors that impact on both the supply of and demand for a commodity such as potash if the time period is today. It gets a little tough if one has to project into tomorrow or next week or next month. And when we start talking in terms of a year, five years or ten or fifteen years, things really get sticky and the old crystal ball becomes mighty cloudy. But we economists and forecasters are not known for our temerity so let me get on with the job at hand and take a look at the world potash supply/demand outlook.

Introduction On the banks of the Columbia River, about halfway between Seattle and Spokane, sits Wenatchee, WA. It calls itself "the apple capital of the world." And it has a gold mining history that dates back to the 1880s. It was just outside Wenatchee - three blocks outside, to be exact-that Asamera recently dedicated its $60 million Cannon underground gold mine. At full production, it is estimated the Cannon mine will yield between 5 and 5.6 t/a (160,000 and 180,000 oz per year) of gold. That would make Cannon the largest North American underground gold mine to be brought into production this year. Cannon should also be among the top 10 of all North American gold producers. Asamera officials project Cannon's operating costs at about $4.8019 ($150 per oz). At that rate, the mine should also be one of the lower cost and most profitable gold mining operations in North America. One reason for low operating costs is low electric power costs. The Cannon operation will be paying about 2.5 cents per kWh for hydroelectric power supplied by the Bonneville Power Authority. Proven and probable ore reserves at Cannon are in excess of 4.7 Mt (5.2 million st). Reserve grades average 7.29 g/t (0.21 oz per st) of gold in three ore zones, in order of discovery - B, B West, and B North. The ore bodies could have been mined by open-pit methods. But underground mining was chosen for environmental reasons. In addition, the rich B North ore body extends beneath a nearby horse stable and arena. The Cannon mine area comprises some 20 km2 (5000 acres) in Chelan County. The mine site is located at the 305 m (1000 ft) elevation in Dry Gulch at the base of the Cascade Mountains. The initial estimate of mine life for the Cannon operation is eight years, depending on gold prices. But Asamera officials believe the Wenatchee area has excellent potential for future gold discoveries. Asamera, Inc. of Calgary, Alberta, owns 51% of the Cannon property, through its wholly-owned Asamera Minerals (US). Breakwater Resources Ltd. of Vancouver, British Columbia owns 49% of the operation. The Cannon mine is named in honor of longtime Asamera, Inc. executive and current company director, geologist Donald G. Can¬non. It was he who first brought the Wenatchee property to Asamera's attention and urged the company to pursue it. Asamera is a major explorer and producer of oil and gas. Its Cannon operation is the largest and most significant to date in its mining division, according to Rob¬ert G. Welty. He is Asamera's chairman and chief executive officer. It should be noted there was an element of serendipity involved in Cannon's development. The development program be¬gan when geologist Cannon visited the Wenatchee area. He was visit¬ing old mining districts. He liked what he saw. The Cannon property was eventually optioned for ex¬ploration, including a modest drilling program.

The global mining industry has recorded significant declines in accident and injury rates attributed to the advancement in technology, increased enforcement, and safety consciousness. A goal of the mining industry is to achieve zero injury and occupational illness on all mine sites, prompting increased research into ways to further reduce mine accidents. A machine learning technique known as multiclass logistic regression is applied on a 10-year injury dataset from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to determine a miner’s susceptibility to a class of injury and to help identify significant risk factors associated with different classes of injury. The data is aggregated based on injury classification to provide statistically relevant results. The analysis identifies specific risk factors that influence a mine worker’s susceptibility to a given class of injury, i.e., non-fatal with no days lost or restricted activity, non-fatal with days lost and/or days of restricted work activity, and fatal and total permanent or partial permanent disability. These factors include miner’s age, mine type (coal vs. non-coal), experience on the current job (years), shift start time, employment type (operator vs. contractor), mining district, and type of accident. The results of the analysis indicate that a miner’s experience on the job, i.e., the number of years worked in a current job, is a significant risk to injury occurrence, even for those with decades of total mining experience. We further show the differences and similarities between the surface and underground mine incidents.

Rhenium is primarily recovered as a byproduct from molybdenum roasting circuits. However, rhenium is also present in copper heap leach solutions at very low concentrations, and this represents a potential new rhenium source. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) has developed a new process using carbon adsorption followed by ion exchange or solvent extraction to concentrate rhenium from less than 1 ppm to 15 g/L. The product is compatible as a feed to an existing rhenium processing plant. A pilot plant operated at Freeport-McMoRan?s Sierrita Mine has demonstrated the technical and financial feasibility of this new process. Copper heap leaching dissolves more than just copper from the copper ore. Several metals can be identified in leach solutions at concentrations of financial interest, rhenium in particular. Rhenium spot prices ranged from a yearly average of $1,070/kg ($483/lb) in 2005 (Magyar, 2008) to $10,400/kg ($4,706/lb) in 2008 (Polyak, 2013). The spot price in September 2013 was approximately $3,000/kg ($1,357/lb) of rhenium (Metal Bulletin, 2013). Several facilities at Freeport-McMoRan have very low rhenium concentrations in their copper leach solutions, ranging from 0.1 to 0.7 mg/L. The large quantity of solution available, if coupled with an attractive rhenium price, means that the rhenium contained in leach solutions may represent a significant value if a method of extraction could be developed. Testing has confirmed that rhenium adsorbs onto activated carbon much more selectively than other metals in the pregnant leach solution (PLS). A 100-gpm pilot plant was constructed to verify the lab-scale results on a larger basis and establish operating parameters for a full-scale operation. This report summarizes the initial technology development and pilot plant operation.

The latest estimates compiled by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists again indicate a moderate increase in mining geophysical activity in 1980 over the 1979 level. While North American activity remained at above the 1979 level, a considerable increase in mining geophysics was reported in South America, Australia, and the Far East. The total worldwide expenditures for mining geophysics were reported to be $53.7 million in 1980, compared to $44.4 million in 1979, and $31.6 million in 1978. During 1980, approximately 2% of all dollars spent on geophysics were attributed to mining geophysical activities; this percentage has remained relatively constant in recent years. Airborne surveys accounted for 51% of the total worldwide mining geophysical expenditure, 43% was spent for land surveys, and 6% for borehole surveys. Within the US, the breakdown of expenditures for land surveys was 60% for elec¬trical methods, 23% for gravity and magnetic methods, and 17% for seismic techniques. Electrical techniques remain the primary exploration tool for US mining geophysicists. Electrical Methods With inductive or electromagnetic (EM) techniques, significant developments were achieved in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Work continued on increasing the signal level on most time-domain (TEM) methods, to increase the exploration depth. The Crone group increased the power of its Pulse ElectroMagnetic system (PEM) to a 20-amp transmitter-loop capability. The GEOEX group is modifying the SIROTEM II system to obtain larger transmitter amperage from a portable motor generator. Geonics developed a new digital recording system (data logger) for its EM-37 system. This development should increase the productivity of EM-37 crews. A new ground, frequency-domain EM system was developed by the Scintrex group. This novel Genie system does not require a wire link between the receiver and transmitter. Because an amplitude-ratio is measured, the Genie data are reported to be relatively insensitive to coil orientation and distance errors. This new technique does not need extensive line-cutting or accurate station-chaining and would appear to be a good reconnaissance instrument. Scintrex also began marketing the new IPR-11 induced polarization spectral receiver. This receiver is microprocessor controlled, and can output to a cassette tape and record 10 windows of secondary voltage decay simultaneously from up to six receiver dipoles. The Phoenix group's new 100 kW induced polarization/resistivity (IP/R) transmitter began tests using their IPV-3 multifrequency, multichannel receiver. While this unit was primarily developed for "oilfield" IP exploration research, it has obvious application to "deep" mineral exploration. The Phoenix group also developed a new remote-reference, real-time magneto-telluric (MT) device in 1981. This five-component MT sys¬tem has a frequency range from 0.0005-384 Hz. Helicopter-borne electromagnetic (HEM) developments also continued in 1981. The mining in¬dustry increased its use of the new Geonics EM-33-3 multifrequency, multicoil instrument. In 1981, the Dighem group developed software for estimating magnetite as a mapping parameter from its HEM system. Dighem's work is said to complement airborne magnetic intensity surveys, since the HEM estimate is independent of remanent magnetism and magnetic latitude effects. Gravity and Magnetic Methods Probably one of the most innovative techniques in geophysics in 1981 was the use of airborne gravity surveys for both mining and petroleum exploration. The Carson group is using a modified, shipborne LaCoste-Romberg platform in helicopters. Data accuracies to 0.5 milligal have been achieved by flying gridded surveys. Although this airborne method is expensive-up to $186/ km ($300/line-mile)-the geophysical community has been excited by initial results. On the ground, the portable proton-precession magnetometers are becoming sophisticated. Both GeoMetrics and EDA recently introduced field magnetometers having data storage and processing capabilities. This development should greatly increase the productivity of ground-magnetic surveys. Seismic Methods Development of high-resolution seismic techniques continued in 1981. These techniques have primarily been directed toward coal studies for fault detection. OYO Instruments introduced their McSEIS-1500 seismic data acquisition system in 1981. This device contains a 24-channel recording capability, with digital output to 256-kbyte floppy disks. The high-speed data transfer using the disk media is considered a desirable feature. Borehole Methods The general decrease in uranium exploration, where borehole logging is extensively used, probbly led to the overall decline of geophysical logging activity in the minerals industry. However, a number of new sondes and logging systems were introduced in 1981: • Mount Sopris recently introduced their Series III logging system. This microprocessor-controlled unit records up to four channels of data on nine-track or cassette magnetic tape. The logging package is relatively light-weight, so helicopter transport to mountainous or roadless exploration sites is possible. (Both the Edcon and Woodware-Clyde consulting groups offer "slinging" capabilities for their Mount Sopris units.) Mount Sopris is continuing work on their 500-mm-diam (2¬in-diam) spectral gamma-ray sonde. This tool is expected to be available soon. • Owl Technical "slim-downed" its successful digital deviation probe to 380-mm (1.5-in) outside diameter. This new sonde will also measure inclinations up to 80° from the vertical, as compared with its older instrument that could measure inclinations to 30°. • A magnetic susceptibility sonde was introduced in the US by the OYO Instruments group. This Kappalog sonde contains two aircored coils for measurements slightly affected by thermal changes within the borehole. Excavation of large rock caverns is a stepwise process. Whether one uses a heading and bench method or a multiple drift system, the use of excavation steps enables one to introduce the reinforcement, such as bolts or shotcrete, at the earliest possible stage. Knowing the spatial distribution and properties of rock materials and geological discontinuities, the cavern geometry and its reinforcement must be optimized. The finite element method of analysis is a powerful tool for such optimization. However, the models are only as good as their ability to account realistically for the physical attributes of the prototype and for the excavation sequence. They must include the following: - ability to model an incremental construction process. Thus requires the use of "Restart" procedures where displacements and stresses from a previous equilibrium are saved for the next step. - ability to model non-linear rock material behavior; in particular, the post-peak behavior of the rock which retains a residual strength when con-fined. The stability of many under-ground structures rests with the "broken" rock carrying significant loads. - ability to account for the non-linear behavior of geological discontinuities. These are two-fold. First, up to peak, non smooth rock joints will dilate. In a confined situation, dilation will increase joint strength by a consider-able amount (Obert, et al, Brady, 1971, Heuze,1978a), Then, beyond the peak, the joint also retains residual strength.

With the passage of recent national and state legislation aimed at tighter regulation of air pollution and smoke control, attention has been focused on a problem which has long confronted the coal industry--the disposal of coal waste with its inadvertent ignition. Even as recent as 1935, a decision from the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas confirms the stand taken on control of burning coal refuse disposal areas. "The uncontroverted testimony is that there is no feasible method of operating a coal mine without a gob pile on the surface, as no use has ever been found for this troublesome by-product of mining; that every large coal mine has a large gob pile close to its tipple; that sooner or later these piles all ignite through spontaneous combustion; that practically every large mine in Western Pennsylvania has a burning gob pile, and that there is no known means of averting such a fire." 19* As a result of the past "no regulation policy," there are presently on the order of 500 burning refuse banks, of which 213, 142, and 49 are found in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky, respective¬ly. 18 Many of these refuse banks have burned for 40 years or more; many others may continue burning for a like period. It is estimated that the annual emission from these smoldering piles approaches 183,000 tons of pollutents which may produce many deleterious effects on the populace, property and vegetation in the proximity to the sources.16 To date, little progress has been made in alleviating the pollution from the currently burning refuse banks; however, numerous investigators who are researching the causes of ignition, as well as preventative disposal techniques (refuse compaction, layering and crushing to finer sizes) have met with some success in handling the newly discarded coal refuse.

Several attempts have been made in the past sixty or so years to commerciliaze the vast oil shale deposits of the United States of America. However, the industry has yet to become viable and economic. To date, it has not been possible to produce oil from the oil shales at a competitive price when compared to the oil produced from oilfields by conventional methods. However, the development work has been quite fruitful in furthering the art of thick bed mining and technology of in situ retorting. The in situ method has the potential of recovering oil from thick beds and the resource recovery potential is much greater than that from underground mining and surface retorting. In situ methods require that the shales/ marlstones be fragmented ' in place to induce adequate porosity and permeability to allow in situ' heating of the fragmented shales. This can be accomplished by using explosives. However, it has been found that the existing blasting systems, though very efficient, are somewhat lacking. The explosive become insensitive when shot in multiple vertical decks. They can also become insensitive when spaced horizontally at close proximity to other charges. Also, since the blasting is done in a very limited free face, this limits the delay time that can be allowed between charges. Consequently it is not always possible to predict the performance of the blasting system on a routine basis. Furthermore, since it is not possible to undertake secodary blasting, it is imperative that the blast design function properly. Recent, successful retorting by Occidental Petroleum Company of retorts seven and eight suggests that some of these problems may have been overcome. This paper addresses some aspects of in situ retorting and problems those have impeded the development of a viable oil shale industry in the U.S.A.

Coal blending inherently means homogenizing a mixture of coals so that, overall, the properties of the blend meet some specifications for maintaining power plant performance and emission requirements. In common practice, however, coal blending is at best coal mixing. If necessary, more sophisticated blending systems can produce a more homogeneous feed by using accurate weighing devices and on-line coal analyzers coupled with sampling systems. Blending can be accomplished at the mine, on stockpiles, and from bins, bunkers, and silos.

Rhenium is a valuable and extremely rare chemical element with unique chemical properties. It is extracted commercially as a byproduct from the processing of molybdenite associated with porphyry copper ores. There is a present interest in recovering rhenium from copper pregnant leach solutions (PLS) produced by copper heap and stockpile leaching. These solutions contain rhenium at very dilute concentrations, typically in the 1 mg/L concentration range. This paper describes laboratory column ion exchange experiments to extract rhenium from these solutions using weakly basic anion exchange resins and actual plant PLS from two operating mines. The dynamic loading and elution behavior of Re on Purolite® A170 and A172 is discussed.

On Nov. 4, 1981 the newly installed 1000tph wet-process iron-ore ball mill of A/S Sydvaranger completed its first four months of uninterrupted, successful full-load operation in Kirkenes/Norway. This 6.5m diameter mill is driven by a gearless ring or wrap-around motor of 8100kW at 13.1RPM - a first of a kind in this segment of industry. (Fig. 1) This paper analyses the reasons that have led to the selection of this type of drive over more conventional schemes, lists specific advantages of such large mills, and describes in some detail the installation in Norway. General aspects of possible design variations, and application information for designers and users of such mills conclude the presentation.
