Booster fans in underground coal mines are often located using the concept of a neutral point. Normally, intake airways are maintained at higher absolute pressure than return airways; therefore, air leaks from intake to return. By adding a significant pressure force to a region of a ventilation system, booster fans installed in a return airway can increase the pressure in the return so that air leaks from return to intake. This is commonly referred to as recirculation. The neutral point occurs at the location in the system where the pressure difference between [ ] the intake and the return airway is zero. At this point, there is no leakage or recirculation. Ideally, placing a booster fan near the neutral point minimizes leakage and recirculation. However, in practice, the position of the neutral point is not static and it changes as the ventilation system parameters change. Booster fans have the potential to increase the capacity and efficiency of coal mine ventilation systems. However, these fans add a significant pressure source to ventilation systems and can create areas where the pressure in the intake is less than the pressure in the return causing recirculation. In systems with multiple booster fans, there may be multiple recirculation paths and, as the capacity of these fans increases, recirculation is more likely to occur.

Carajás is one of the largest open pit mines in the world. The mine is comprised by a haul road network more than 100 km long, where the need for good roads is paramount and determining of the truck performances. This work integrates, regarding the ultimate pit design, an approach to consider an economic value to an originally unfit material, assuming it has the appropriate characteristics for haul road construction, which sometimes lies over economic iron ore. This measure demonstrated an improvement in the utilization of resources and guarantee the necessary material to the haul road design and Mining Pads maintenance.

Despite its great potential utility, ion exchange has only achieved limited application in hydrometallurgy. To a significant extent this is due to the limitations of conventional ion exchange process design as well as the properties of the ion exchange resins themselves. Over the past decade several new ion exchange resins have been introduced with properties that make them potentially very useful for various hydrometallurgical separations. In addition, a novel ion exchange process called Reciprocating Flow Ion Exchange or Recoflo, which has been employed in the metal finishing industry for the last dozen or so years for chemical recovery and effluent treatment, has been shown to offer a number of unique and significant advantages over conventional I.X. technology.

The sedimentation and dewatering characteristics of flocculated slurries are determined by the size and density of the flocs. Studies of the formation and growth of flocs reveal that floc size is limited by breakage of the agglomerates due to shear in the suspension. Floc density measurements indicate that there is an inverse relationship between size and density. This relationship appears to be determined primarily by the nature of the solid particles, especially the size distribution, but it appears that agitation of the suspension can lead to some densification of the flocs, in addition to breakage. It follows that both size and density can be controlled to a significant extent by regulating the physical conditions (agitation, method of flocculant addition etc.) during flocculation. The use of physical floc conditioning to control the sedimentation and dewatering (filtration) behavior of flocculated, fine-particle suspensions is evaluated in terms of its effects on floc size end density.

Would you believe me if I told you the constant battle between Government regulatory agencies and industry could be won by both sides? No, I'm not crazy, nor have I been soaking up any of that fine Kentucky whitelightning. But I have recently been a participant in a battle where both sides won. Actually, I'm using the term "battle" loosely because, in reality, it wasn't a battle at all - despite the fact that all the ingredients were there for a monumental struggle; i.e.. government, industry, special interest groups and a controversial issue - the development of effluent limitations. I'd like to tell you about it. Historically, on one side of the battle, government has always been ac¬cused of adopting regulations with limited evaluation of existing technologies; and then with seemingly no regard for the economic consequences. On the other side, industry gets punished by government's harsh actions because of their past "do-nothing" attitude toward pollution control. Recently, this battle seems to be losing steam, because both government and industry are beginning to realize that, ultimately, they both will lose. Even more important is the fact that both sides are, or should be, working for industrial expansion compatible with environmental protection.

The study proposes a novel reagent scheme where adding a small amount of citric acid (CA) significantly improves the depression effect of sodium silicate on calcite and fluorite. The flotation results suggest optimal concentrations for CA and sodium silicate, achieving nearly complete depression of the minerals. Theoretical analysis indicates that CA dissolves calcium ions on the mineral surface, enhancing the adsorption of sodium silicate and preventing collector adsorption.

"Around Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota, the local geology includes the St. Peter Sandstone, which is easily minable and has facilitated construction of interceptor tunnels for storm water and sanitary tunnels since the 1800s. The elevation of the geologic units allowed gravity-driven flows from the downtown areas all the way to the Mississippi River. Through many years of service, some of these tunnels have experienced degradation and require maintenance. Additionally, increased stormwater surface runoff can result in internal pressurization of the tunnels, accelerating degradation. Because structural failure or collapse of any of these interceptor tunnels would create a significant repair challenge, the city of Minneapolis has been inspecting and designating tunnels in its system for periodic review and repair. One of these, the St. Mary’s/Hiawatha tunnel, was rehabilitated using a grouting program. A hydrologic model was also used to improve understanding of pressurization events during some storms, leading to construction of a near-surface pressure dissipation chamber to provide increased hydraulic capacity. BACKGROUND The St. Mary’s/Hiawatha tunnel in Minneapolis has three segments; the first two were constructed in 1942 and the third was added in 1987 (Figure 1). Segment 1 is approximately 4,700 feet in length and outlets to the Mississippi River. Segment 2 intersects Segment 1 approximately 3,500 feet upstream of the river outlet and continues for approximately 2,500 feet in a southeasterly direction. The third and newest segment is approximately 500 feet long. There are four different cross sections of tunnel along the entire system.Originally, tunnel construction often consisted of mining the St. Peter sandstone with a pressurized water lance and constructing wood lagging support (Payne, 1967). An underdrain was generally installed below the invert during construction; this resulted in localized dewatering and provided groundwater control during construction. Non-reinforced concrete liner sections were cast in place. Often void space existed between the tunnel liner and the native sandstone bedrock. These voids, particularly in the crown, prevent direct contact between the liner and the bedrock."

The performance of five dense-medium washers was evaluated in four preparation plants. Three of the plants were making a two-product separation that produced a clean coal and a refuse; one plant employed dense-medium vessels in series to effect a primary and a secondary separation. The secondary drum-type washer produced a low-ash metallurgical coal and an intermediate-ash product suitable for plant fuel or steam generation. The sharpness-of-separation was excellent for all four primary separations and the secondary separation.

Health and Safety in the work place is of primary concern to the underground coal industry. Control of dust in the underground environment is of major importance in this concern. Utah Power and Light Mining Division has undertaken extensive studies to determine and control the various sources of respirable dust in underground high production sections. Determination of dust sources has been achieved by real-time aerosol sampling and standard gravimetric sampling on individuals and in various suspect locations. Some sources are diesel roadway dust, outby crushing, and handling equipment, face sloughing, water spray roll-back, and mining equipment. Once identified, the dust sources are suppressed or controlled and/or the workers are directed from areas of greatest potential exposure.

As most of you have probably surmised from the title of my paper, I am here today to talk with you about the use of diesel engines in the American mining industry and whether or not the free choice to use such equipment will continue to be available to mine operators. Of course, I will present to you my prepared remarks, however, these remarks may be essentially academic in light of a news release, parts of which I would like to read to you. Washington, D. C., The Department of Health, Education, and Welfare today announced proposed new regulations to reduce occupational health risks to workers in the U. S. mining industries by requiring the removal of all diesel powered equipment from American mines by December 31st "While we do not have complete and conclusive information to quantify these health risks we feel it is prudent to undertake this restriction on the use of diesel powered equipment without waiting for the completion of studies that are currently underway to identify and quantify these health risks," said a Department spokesman. HEW has been concerned about the health risks of diesel emissions in the underground coal mines for some time and have investigations underway designed to conclusively demonstrate the nature and magnitude of any health risks. However, HEW has decided to proceed with these regulations without waiting for the final results of these investigations. Further, HEW feels there is sufficient probability that diesel health risks do exist in all mining applications and consequently, the proposed regulations will apply to all surface and underground mining operations. It goes on a little further and indicates that due to the necessity of finalizing these regulations without delay, a period of fifteen days has been provided to receive comments regarding these proposed regulations.

The Permian Salado Formation of west Texas and southeastern New Mexico is composed of halite and subordinate amounts of anhydrite, clay and potassium and magnesium-bearing evaporite minerals. Aspects of the geochemistry of the Salado Formation have been investigated through studies of the stratigraphy, mineral assemblages, textures and minor element content of the salts. These studies provide information on the origin of the evaporites when combined with data on equilibria in saturated salt solutions. The principal potash ore zone in the district is composed essentially of halite (NaC1) and sylvite (KC1). Data on the color, bromide content, and proportions of halite and sylvite suggest that this simple assemblage is the product of a series of replacements rather than primary precipitation. The bromide content of the salts also indicates that the brine which precipitated the Salado Formation was derived from the dissolution of older evaporites rather than the simple evaporation of sea water.

"INTRODUCTION Of all the natural resources being taxed by the needs of the modern world, perhaps the most important is the continually expanding demand for water resources. As water becomes scarcer, and increasingly important, new technologies are needed to find innovative ways to preserve this precious resource. In Chile, for example, the mining industry is investing billions of dollars to build desalination plants and pipelines; bringing ocean water as far as 200 kilometers inland to meet their demand and maintain operations. It is a full-blown crisis for that nation and a top priority for their government and economy. It has been reported that world water consumption will increase by 40 percent in the next 10 years, representing nearly exponential growth. In the U.S., as more and more communities continue to be built, more drain on the current water infrastructure is created. For 25 percent of people and operations that rely on water from aquifers, this source is being consumed at a rate that will create significant problems meeting the demand in as few as two generations.1 A PROACTIVE APPROACH When it comes to controlling dust at your operation, whether a landfill, a transfer station, a haul road or another ancillary area, what are the options? We know watering is not the answer, but at the same time, we need to prevent dust from flying to ensure a safe environment and keep our skies clear of pollution, for both regulatory requirements and neighbors. Creating a Dust Mitigation Program instead of looking to buy the first dust control product off the shelf is a first step to conserve water and, at the same time, maintain the operational demands and environmental standards for a given site. The program concept is straightforward enough. However, the process of effectively constructing and executing a program is quite involved. When undertaking a program, each manager needs to work with their team and their partners/vendors in analyzing the following elements: 1. Site Expectations—It is important to understand how to balance your internal standards with your regulatory requirements, as well as how to keep your neighbors satisfied. 2. Site Aggregate—Variations in native soil, such as clay content or gravel levels, greatly affect the approach that will yield the highest results. 3. Climate—Relative humidity and seasonal variations are critical to achieving predictable results through product choice, application frequency and timing. 4. Daily Traffic—The type and frequency of traffic is an essential variable for site management. 5. Environmental Responsibilities—If you have additional, specifically defined responsibilities, the approach to your site may vary. 6. Budget—While efficiency is the goal of any program, some sites will have more stringent restrictions than others. 7. Current Usage Rates—Document and understand where you’re starting from, both with water, supporting products, and maintenance so that effective measurement of results is possible."

New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland dominate Australian black coal production and exports. NSW produced 86 Mt (95 million st) of saleable coal in 1994, a doubling of output since 1980. Asian demand for thermal and coking coal has driven this growth. This high Asian demand is expected to continue and NSW will seek to secure its share. History The history of the New South Wales (NSW) coal industry can be traced to 1797 when coal was first taken from Newcastle to Sydney (Ellis, 1969). At that time, NSW was a British colony, independent from the other colonies, such as Victoria and Queensland. Australia, as a federation of colonies, did not exist until 1901. The Newcastle coal industry grew through the 1800s in line with the growth of the colonies. Several events spurred demand for Newcastle coal. These included: ? The NSW and Victorian gold rushes of the 1850s and associated population growth. ? The development of steamship traffic at the expense of sail. ? The development of railways and town gas supplies. By 1900, Australia was producing 6.4 Mt (7 million st) of coal, most of it from NSW. By then, NSW had established strong export markets in Indonesia, China, Japan and New Zealand. The history of energy consumption is marked by continual competition, changing intensity of use and substitution. From 1900 to 1940, the Queensland, Victorian and Indonesian coal industries developed at the expense of NSW exports. Similarly, New Zealand developed its hydroelectric industry and thus declined as the largest customer for NSW coal. Oil replaced steam in the shipping and railway markets and electricity replaced gas for lighting. Industrial efficiencies also affected coal. Between 1928 and 1938, coal consumed in generating power fell from by 17% on a kilowatt hour basis and, during the same period, the amount of gas produced per ton of coal rose by 18% (Shaw and Bruno). Faced with these pressures, production and exports stagnated. By 1941, Australian black coal production was 14.2 Mt (15.6 million st). NSW's production was 11.7 Mt (12 million st), up only 19% from 1912. Exports had virtually ceased (Fig. 1). In such circumstances, the industry had lost focus. Industrial Mineral Fillers, LLC. is in the initial stages of mining and processing Anorthosite (CASPAR TM) at its CASPAR mine located in Soledad Canyon, Los Angeles County, California The CASPAR is being mined from the Precambrian San Gabriel Anorthosite Complex of the western San Gabriel Mountains. Preliminary results suggest that CASPAR is a desirable alternative to silica sand used in construction applications, such as, stucco, grout, abrasives, and other uses including filtration and golf course recreation sands. With the use of standard ore dressing techniques, CASPAR is suitable for use as a filler in paint, plastics and rubber. Environmentally, CASPAR has advantages over silica sand, in that, there is no detectable Free Silca.

Canada's gypsum industry began more than 200 years ago in the Maritime provinces when farmers attempted to supplement their incomes by selling "land plaster" to traders bound for the United States. Rising from such humble beginnings, gypsum now contributes significantly to the economies of nine of Canada's 10 provinces. Thirteen open-pit and three underground mines produced a total of 8.4 Mt (9.3 million st) of crude gypsum, and 17 processing plants manufactured 2.5 Mt (2.8 million st) of finished products in 1985. Recent economic growth in North America has resulted in steady increases in gypsum production. However, competition from foreign producers and by-product gypsum pose a growing threat to Canada's gypsum mining industry.

Crushing and grinding The Crushing and Grinding Technical Committee There was substantial activity in the area of crushing and grinding with the improved outlook in the industry. The Crushing and Grinding Committee's theme of 1987's Annual Meeting in Denver was Fundamentals of Mechanical Design for Crushing and Grinding Mills. At the meeting, the concept of gearless sag mill variable speed drives was taken out of the closet, dusted off, and a wraparound motor was put on hard copy with the ordering of a 9.7- x 4.5-m, 8.2-MW (32- x 15-ft, 11,000-) sag mill. Additionally, comparisons were provided to the mill design of the gearless drive sag mill and the twin 4.5 MW (6000 hp) do variable speed drives placed on the drawing board for the Kennecott UCD Expansions. This involved a 10- x 4.5m, 8.9 MW (34- x 15 ft, 12,000 hp) sag mill. Differing opinions were also expressed in technical presentations pertaining to the need for quality mill specifications in design and manufacturing. J. Berney-Ficklin of Bechtel presented a paper outlining the need for quality design and manufacturing specifications in large scale grinding mills, and the overall cost reduction in capital and operating costs. Others presented differing specific views, but all emphasized a central theme. Quality and reliable designs in large mills should not be compromised. In-pit crushing applications continue to increase, overseas and in the US, in both mining and quarrying. Different in-pit crushing units have been classified as mobile, with integral transport systems; semi-mobile, typically modular systems that use separate transporters for repositioning; semi-stationary plants that must be dismantled before transporting and typically require earthwork and concrete foundation work; and stationary in-pit crushing plants, which remain in place for the life of the pit. The majority of equipment sales of conventional crushing and grinding circuits in 1987 were to gold mining operations. There have been two areas of end use: • conventional jaw/gyratory or impact crushing circuits preparing low grade ores for heap leaching; and • small scale sag/ball mill circuits preparing higher grade ores for classical cyanide leach/ recovery circuits. There was also continued interest in ABC and SABC circuits for both base and precious metals plants. High pressure roll crushers continue to attract considerable interest in the cement industry. There, they are used to prepare raw materials or clinker for subsequent ball/tube milling. However, they have apparently been less successful in the mineral industry where the energy savings/ capacity gains have been much less dramatic. Several papers covering the theory and application of these machines were presented in an industrial minerals session on cement at the SME Annual Meeting. The Third International Conference on Hydrocylones, held in England in October produced several papers of interest on classification and screening to the mining industry. In particular, a new cyclone apex, developed by Mt. Newman Mining, shows promise of reducing water flow to the cyclone underflow stream and, therefore, increased underflow pulp densities and reduced fines recycle in grinding circuits. A twin vortex hydrocyclone was also described and shown to give a sharper split than conventional units. Similar double cyclones were introduced in the 1950's, but failed to achieve widespread acceptance. This was due mainly to a proneness to blockage in the transitional zone. It will be interesting to see whether this latest variant can overcome this problem in the typical operation. A number of North American iron ore plants installed the capability to produce fluxed iron ore pellets. Most chose to grind the stone on site with circuits designed to grind taconite ore. Methods employed to grind this material included single-stage ball mills closed with fine screens, rod and ball mill circuits - both open and closed with cyclones - and semiautogenous mills, followed by ball mills closed with screens or cyclones. Sober, University of Florida Due to tightened environmental regulations and the need for more efficient land use, a greater interest in dewatering and waste disposal has developed. As a result, research efforts in flocculation, surface chemistry, and polymers science have focused on the problems related to the dewatering of solid mineral wastes. Portfolio theory and the Capital Asset Pricing Model (Modigliani and Pogue, 1974) provides an investment decision rationale which takes account of the benefits of diversification in reducing effective risk, but this theory does not consider the financial capability of the firm to survive large losses if they should occur. The LL-curve theory (Wells, 1976) takes the latter consideration into account, but it does not provide for the effects of diversification. This paper pro- poses a general theory to account for both diversification and the financial capacity of the firm to underwrite the investment risks.

"In today’s tough mining environment, the key difference between surviving and thriving is how effectively miners optimize their mining operations. This paper explores the compounding effects material fragmentation has on mining costs and productivity. Starting with Drilling & Blasting and moving through Loading, Hauling and Crushing, we will illustrate the opportunities to improve operating costs and thus reduce the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of the total mining system. Material size and volume requirements are defined by the needs of the mill or plant, and drive the rest of the mining operation from the bench through the primary crusher. At the start of the cycle, where the rock mass is drilled and blasted, the degree of fragmentation and the muck pile configuration is determined, as are the effects on cost and productivity of all subsequent operations. The cost of managing oversize material, including secondary handling, overloading, reduced diggability, higher load factors, extra pass loading, increased wear factors and reduced throughput rates are all opportunities for improvement. INTRODUCTION Having visited many mine sites, customers are asking about the end to end mining value stream from loading to the crusher and how to measure the cumulative effects on each part of the mining value chain. All too often improvements with the drilling and blasting may impact fragmentation but do not improve the diggability so the net change on cycle times or fill ratios is perceived to be negative at the point of loading but they may have a measured improvement going through the primary crusher. This makes it imperative to measure performance at each segment of the overall cycle and not just to the crusher but thru it. The mine material process originates with solid rock, in-situ, and progresses to the output of the primary crusher. Once the material has passed the primary crusher the fragmentation size will be fairly consistent and promote consistent throughput of the plant or mill. In late 2015 a team was conducting a reassessment visit to a mining site where we had conducted the original assessment the previous year. Though many recommendations had been implemented some had been so recent they had not resulted in the expected improvements. Several of our discussions kept returning to the impact fragmentation has to both the individual components of the mining cycle but also the effects compounded throughout the end to end process. Let’s move on to the big picture before we zoom in on any specific operation. To get from native solid rock in the ground to a concentrate or a saleable rock product we have the same steps from one end of the chain to the other. We start with a good geological understanding of the rock type, characteristics and structure to design a program to drill and blast the rock. The height of the bench is relevant to the annual production requirements and the specific digging equipment models best sized to make that production possible. The equipment selection influences the bench height which has a minimum and maximum hole diameter to maintain a safe blasting operation. The diameter of hole burden and spacing all contribute to a good distribution of explosives in the rock mass that maximize the fragmentation and preconditioning of the rock when blasted. The timing and sequencing of hole initiation will yield a fragmentation ratio and diggability factor. Fragmentation size adjustments will change the meters drilled per cube and the explosives consumption will change accordingly. Drill cost is measured by meter drilled so a direct relationship exists between cost and fragmentation sized achieved."

Underground mine fires remain a concern for mine operators, posing a health and safety risk to mineworkers. In the last decade, the number of mine fires has decreased significantly; however, dealing with an unknown fire in underground mines can be a challenging task, which could lead to a hazardous condition for miners during an evacuation and rescue operation. A timely detection of a mine fire and monitoring its characteristics, namely size and location, are of great importance in reducing the risk of mine fire injuries. A new improved fire location algorithm has been developed and integrated into an Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS) program by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). This paper describes the new fire location model and presents the results of verification fire tests conducted at the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) facility of the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) using the collected AMS data. NIOSH is endeavoring to develop workplace solutions to improve detection of and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions in mines. The results demonstrate successful application of the improved fire location model and provide a useful tool for solving the problem of unknown fire location and reducing the risk of hazardous conditions.

During the twentieth century the Mesabi Range in northeastern Minnesota has been the major source of iron ore for American steel mills. The Mesabi Range extends along an iron bearing outcrop known as the Biwabik formation. This outcrop is some 120 miles long and up to three miles wide. The formation is from 200 to 650 feet thick and dips 5 to 10 degrees to the southeast. The iron content of the original Biwabik formation was quite uniform, but much of this formation has been subjected to alteration. Thus major variations in iron content and mineral composition exist both laterally and vertically in the present Biwabik formation. The remaining unaltered iron formation includes the magnetic taconites which are commercially processed by Reserve Mining, Erie Mining, Eveleth Taconite, National Steel, Butler Taconite, and U.S. Steel. These six operations have a capacity of 32 million tons. per year of iron pellets and have produced approximately 170 million tons of pellets since 1956. Capacity for another 30 million tons per year of pellets is being considered by the industry for the next ten years. This increase will be obtained by construction of new plants and expansion of present operations. Thus by 1977, it is estimated that approximately 60 million tons per year of iron pellets will be produced from magnetic taconite on the Mesabi Range. The portions of the Biwabik formation subjected to intense alteration resulted in the direct shipping, wash and heavy media ores. Since 1892, 1.8 billion tons of direct shipping ore have been shipped from the Mesabi Range. This ore has been the major source of iron for American steel mills. In 1966, 12 million tons of direct shipping ore and 18 million tons of wash, jig, heavy media and other gravity concentrates were shipped from the Mesabi Range. These products generally have poorer physical and chemical properties than the iron pellets produced from magnetic taconite. It is predicted that the shipment of these materials will decrease from about 30 million tons in 1966 to 6 to 8 million tons in 1975. This decrease will be due to depletion of reserves and poor quality product.
