A brief literature review on metal separations by ion exchange and solvent extraction of their thiocyanate complexes which are practiced in analytical chemistry as well as in industries was performed. Owing to the poor stability of free thiocyanic acid in acidic aqueous and organic media, technical and environmental problems which cause high thiocyanate consumptions often arise during the practice of the separation processes. This prompted the conducting of a second and more thorough literature review on the chemistry of thiocyanic acid. The objectives of this undertaking are to compile and interpret literature data on the physical properties and chemical reactions of thiocyanic acid, thus providing a clearer understanding of the causes of these problems and giving options as to how to minimize them. The best answer found for carrying out the separation processes is to keep the temperature, thiocyanic acid concentration and total acidity as low as practical.

One of the major ignition sources of fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines is flame cutting and welding. On May 20, 2006, a flame-cutting operation at the Darby Mine No. 1 led to an explosion that resulted in five fatalities. On Jan. 22, 2003, another explosion caused by flame cutting at the McElroy Mine resulted in three fatalities and three serious injuries. On June 22, 1999, a flame-cutting and welding operation at the Loveridge Mine caused a fire that required sealing the mine for an extended period. On March 19, 1992, an explosion initiated by welding at the Blacksville No. 1 Mine resulted in four fatalities. These examples of mine incidents demonstrate the need to conduct research to develop best practices for safely conducting flame cutting and welding in underground coal mines. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study on fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines that were caused by flame-cutting and welding operations to determine the root causes of these types of incidents. The methodology included interviewing mining personnel who perform flame-cutting or welding operations in underground U.S. coal mines and visiting mines to observe these operations. In addition, MSHA reports of investigations and accidents statistics were analyzed. The findings were used to identify and compare differences between flame-cutting and welding practices and techniques in small and large mines, eastern and western mines, low-seam and high-seam mines, room-and-pillar and longwall mines, and between experienced miners and new miners. As a result of this study, best practices were developed to reduce the number of ?res and explosions caused by flame cutting and welding. This paper provides a summary of this research.

Mine frictional resistance is one of the essential parameters of mine ventilation systems, and it is of considerable significance for the prevention and control of mine risks and accident hazards. Frictional resistance requires a lot of resources and time and has errors. To reduce the errors of frictional resistance, a regression model of frictional resistance is proposed based on the correlation analysis of the affecting factors. Through the comparative test analysis of seven regression methods, it is found that the classification and regression tree method for solving the proposed regression model has better performance than other methods. The least square error criterion is used to calculate and rank the importance of the factors affecting frictional resistance. The results show that the cross-sectional area of the tunnel, the support method, and the presence or absence of devices or pedestrian ladders have the most considerable influence on the prediction accuracy of frictional resistance. The support methods and cross-sectional areas are essential input variables. Through the combination test analysis of the influencing factors, the results show that the regression model does not have predictive ability when the number of input variables is less than 3 and the best predictive performance cannot be obtained using all the influencing factors. The best prediction model of resistance is to combine the shape of the tunnel, the support method, the presence or absence of devices or pedestrian ladders, and the cross-sectional area. The method proposed in this paper does not require a lot of resources and time investment, and the frictional resistance error is small. At the same time, it solves the problem of resistance prediction with incomplete data of influencing factors and provides a compelling new method for obtaining frictional resistance parameters.

The Pinto Valley Concentrator of BHP Copper Inc. restarted its sulphide mining operations in September 2007 to produce copper and moly concentrates. During the plant production ramp up, the copper/moly circuit quickly reached the copper grade and recovery targets, but the production and quality of the moly concentrate continued to be a challenge. Even though several improvements in the moly circuit were completed, the final moly concentrate did not meet contractual specifications. After reviewing several options to improve grade and reduce contaminants, the installation of three flotation columns was chosen. The column design and construction were done utilizing in-house craftsmen and engineers. Ten days after commissioning, the columns successfully reached a steady operation and began producing moly concentrate to the required specifications, that is, high moly tenors and low copper and iron content. In this paper, the operating parameters, mass balance, design, installation, commissioning and operation of the new flotation columns will be discussed.

Green algae have been found to be much more resistant to heavy metals than blue-green algae. Several mechanisms for resistance to toxicity have been recognized in laboratory strains of Cyanidium, Chlorella and Chlamycomonas. Cyanidium and Chlorella both grow at low pH in acid mine water. Cyanidium removes metal ions from solution by precipitation as metal sulfides whereas Chlorella complexes metal ions to the cell surface i.e. cell wall) and therefore functions as an efficient ion exchange vehicle. We have shown that Ca2+, Mg2+, K+ and Na+ are of critical importance in both the resistance and bioaccumulation of toxic heavy metals.

CoaLiquid, Inc. (CLI) has been in the coal- oil-mixture (COM) business for over five (5) years. The initial pilot processing facility was replaced by a 2000 barrel per day commercial production facility in August of 1979. For over two (2) years CLI has been expanding its efforts and conducting large scale production and combustion demonstrations successfully in many locations across the United States. To facilitate the marketing effort, CLI has recently constructed a special trailer containing all equipment needed for a temporary COM retrofit. CoaLiquid has conducted commercial scale combustion demonstrations in the following types of combustion units: kilns, calciners, industrial boilers, blast furnaces and driers.

The Environment Weipa is located at 12° south latitude on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, North Queensland, Australia. The climate is tropical with most of the 1 600 mm. average annual rainfall falling between November and March. During the short winter months (May/ August) the weather is clear and pleasant, with temperatures seldom exceeding 27°C.Throughout the remainder of the year, conditions are frequently oppressive due to consistent high ambient temperatures accompanied by high humidity. The terrain is of low relief, and generally not more than 6 to 10m. above mean sea level adjacent to the coast. The coastline features numerous short estuaries which discharge run-off from the heavy rains collected by creeks and rivers. The whole area is covered by an open forest, the predominant species of which is Eucalyptus tetradonta. These eucalypts have only limited commercial value and are heavily infested with termites. Despite the fact that Weipa is close to the location of the first reported sighting of the Australian coastline by a European (William Janz - 1606), it remains very isolated. There is no developed road or rail connection to centres of population, so that transport of practically all products, personnel and materials to and from Weipa is by sea and air. Better understanding of the mechanisms and kinetics of dissolution can benefit several industrial processes. For example, iron can be leached from clays, which can be further used as a raw material in the ceramic industry. Another important application is the regeneration of ceramic filter media, which are used in the dewatering of iron ores. Dissolution of iron oxides in mixtures of acids is fairly uncommon and a less well-understood phenomenon, but it can result in a more efficient process. This work also shows that the determination of dissolution mechanisms and kinetics is not straightforward in different acid systems.

The Kings Mountain area of North Carolina is the lithium pegmatite center of the U.S., if not of the whole world. We have two spodumene and by-product mineral producing companies, Lithium Corp. of America, and Foote Mineral Company. We also have Kings Mountain Mica and Kings Mountain Silica Companies producing mica. feldspar, quartz and clay from weathered pegmatites in that area. Figure 1 gives the location of the spodumene pegmatite area in North Carolina. The two spodumene producers mine typical pegmatite ore in open pits after removing amphibolite or mica schist overburden which is sold to aggregate producers. The ore reserves are discussed elsewhere in this session. They are in the order of plus 50 million tons but not unlimited. 1.2 The major minerals found and concentrated from the North Carolina spodumene pegmatite ores are tabulated on Table 1.

Martin County Coal Corporation is located in Martin County, Kentucky in the Appalachian coal fields, near the West Virginia border. The total leasehold covers more than 33 000 acres. Total annual production at Martin County Coal Corporation is currently 2,500,000 tons, but in certain years exceeded 3,000,000 tons. Approximately 45 percent of the annual production comes from two surface mines. The balance is produced from five underground mines. Martin County Coal Corporation's work schedule consists of 240 days/year, two nine-hours shifts/day.

The persistent requirement for methods and equipment capable of detecting hazardous anomalies in advance of underground mining has led to the development by the U.S. Bureau of Mines of a directional radar probe. The probe operates from boreholes drilled from the surface into the underground region to be mined. The engineering model radar was completed in early 1982 and field demonstration tests were performed in May of that year at a selected coal mine. Preliminary in-situ electromagnetic tests were performed at several candidate coal mines to evaluate the radio-frequency characteristics of the coal. A coal mine in New Mexico was selected on the basis of low EM propagation losses in the coal and the presence of an extensive coal seam displacing fault as a radar target. The borehole radar was operated in two vertical boreholes which intersected the coal seam at approximately 25 and 40 feet from the fault interface. Radar reflections from the coal/ rock interface were detected in both tests. Underground tests in a horizontal borehole in the coal were less successful because of interfering reflections. Additional borehole-to-borehole tests were performed with a separate ground penetrating electromagnetic system to obtain radar range calibration data. The coal was found to be bounded by very lossy roof and floor sandstone and shale while propagation through the coal seam was obtained at distances up to 175 feet between test boreholes. Coal seam continuity was indicated by the hole-to-hole experiments through a section of the seam previously thought to be completely cut off by the fault.

"A slurry is any combination of liquids and solids where solids make up more than 10 percent of the mixture. Mining operations create various types of slurries from processes such as dewatering, bitumen extraction in oil sands, concentrator plants, milling operations, tailings, lime addition and so on. The mines then transport these slurries through pipelines (Fig. 1).Slurry valves are used when the mine needs to transport ore a long distance and there are no other viable transportation methods, such as roads or railroads.Severe service valves must be used in slurry applications and they must be tested to ensure reliability. This article describes how Emerson designs and tests its Fisher valves for use in mining slurry applications.Slurry pipeline valvesWithin a slurry pipeline system, valves are required as part of the pumping stations, choking stations and isolation stations. There may be multiple pumping stations depending on the length of the pipeline or the terrain it crosses. Choking stations are used to reduce the velocity and the pressure in the pipeline, either before a pumping station or at the end of the pipeline, and to ensure the pipeline does not slack (remains full and pressurized). Isolation stations exist so that a pig (a device sent through a pipeline to clean or inspect the pipe) can be inserted or removed from the pipeline.Typical valves used in a slurry pipeline are severe service ball valves. The valves use floating balls that are held between the seats and are not pinned or permanently attached to the shaft that rotates the ball. The inside diameter of the ball typically matches the pipeline inside diameter, enabling the pipeline to be cleaned or inspected with a pig.They can be built to accommodate the high pressures required for the typical slurry pipeline. These pressures can require up to ASME Class 2500 valves and flanges. The valves can get qlarge, up to NPS 36 inches.Specialized segmented ball valves and slurry knife gate valves are also used in some slurry applications when pressures are lower, in the ASME Class 150-300 range."

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines investigated solvent extraction methods for recovering gallium from filtrates produced from sulfuric acid leaching of hydrometallurgical zinc residues. These filtrates typically had pH values of 0 to 0.5, too high an acid content for effective gallium recovery by traditional extractants. Of the nine extractants studied in batch tests, 0.3M octyl phenyl acid phosphate (OPAP) in a kerosene diluent was the most effective extractant for gallium recovery, extracting up to 99.9 pct of the gallium. This high extraction was possible when the iron in solution was maintained in the reduced ferrous state. Batch tests also showed that a 1.5M-H2SO4 strip liquor recovered 98 pct of the gallium from the loaded OPAP. A continuous solvent extraction system was designed and operated based on McCabe-Thiele analyses of equilibrium loading and stripping isotherms. When 12 L of leach filtrate containing 0.32 giL Ga and 20 giL Fe were pumped through the system in 32 hr, results showed that 95 pct of the gallium was extracted in four stages at an A:O ratio of 1:1. Stripping the loaded solvent with a 1.5M-H2S04 liquor recovered 94 pct of the gallium in four stages at an A:O ratio of 1:4. A two-stage, 50-pct-phosphoric acid strip successfully removed ferric iron from the OPAP, allowing high gallium extractions to be maintained.

"The Riyadh Metro, commissioned by Arriyadh Development Authority “ADA” - the executive arm of The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh -, forms part of a new public transport-system of Saudi Arabia’s fast growing capital city. The Design & Build project consists of 176 km of Metro Line with 57 km of tunnels. Beyond the Design and Construction, an additional aim of the ADA is to introduce up-to-date methodologies and improve safety in construction projects. A systematic dilapidation survey of buildings and infrastructures was a prerequisite for designing the required instrumentation and monitoring tools. Site investigations required of existing methodologies and the use of geophysical methods for achieving reliable results. Large diameter TBM tunneling is challenging in hot weather conditions and karstic ground. The present paper shows how modern technologies for underground construction are introduced into the local industry and gives an outlook on future projects in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. INTRODUCTION Riyadh, the capital city of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is a fast growing city with more than 5.7 million inhabitants. The growth of the city is linked to the recent history of the Kingdom, where some initial milestones from the 1950’s can be highlighted: Revenue generation from the exportation of oil from the Kingdom; downstream investment of oil revenue in the reconstruction and development of the Kingdom; a general plan for the settlement of the Bedouins; the provision of a public electricity network for the city; the opening of the Riyadh - Dammam railway corridor providing a link from the capital to the Eastern Region; the commissioning of Riyadh airport (converted to Riyadh airbase, after the opening of King Khalid International Airport in 1983); and the relocation of ministries and other central government agencies in 1955. In 1974, The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh was established as the organizational, planning, executive and coordinating body responsible for the development of Riyadh. Arriyadh Development Authority “ADA”, established in 1983 is the High Commission’s executive, technical and administrative arm. The ADA is responsible for implementing the High Commission's organizational, planning, executive and coordinating decisions and missions. The ADA’s president is a member of the High Commission (ADA 2015). One of the remits of the ADA is the preparation and execution of a transport plan for the city of Riyadh."

The bed filtration of colloidal particles has been modeled by performing a differential particle balance. The balance considered the localized particle deposition rate to be the sum of three rate resistances: 1) mass transfer to a region near the surface; 2) adhesion onto a partially filled surface; and 3) resuspension from a partially filled surface. The differential particle balance equations, one for the free particles and one for the adhered particles, were solved by a finite difference algorithm. The results of this model are compared to experimental filter breakthrough curves.

"As an extension of the work on the effect of OH- on various cations in hydrometallurgical systems, the effect of Cl-, Br-, I- and CN- on cations such as Ag+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Cu+, Cu2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Pb2+ and Sn2+ has been examined in detail. The Newton-Raphson technique has been used to determine the amounts of various metal species as a function of the concentration of anions. Some practical implications of various metal complexes in metal separation and removal from solutions have been examined and discussed.IntroductionUnderstanding the role of anions in hydrometallurgical processes often determines the success of an operation. The successful choice of concentration and type of anions not only leads to an effective extraction and removal of metals (Esmaeili et al., 2005; Brbooti et al., 2011; Wei et al., 2005; Jeppesen et al., 2009; Al-Tarazi et al., 2004), but also to assisting effective separation of various metals, whether it is a solvent extraction, ion exchange operation or even a simple precipitation (Farha et al., 2011; Sevenich and Fritz, 1983; Rashid, 1974).This paper continues the discussion of the role of anions in hydrometallurgical systems beyond the role of OH-, which was the topic of a previous paper (Kim et al., 2014). Table 1 lists various anions that are frequently used in conjunction with metal ions to be selectively separated or precipitated. As seen in the table, many anions are used frequently in hydrometallurgical practices. Some of the more frequently used anions include OH-, SO4 2- and CO3 2-. The halogen elements, Cl-, Br- and I- , as well as CN-, are also used in hydrometallurgical applications, especially in relation to noble metal recoveries (Meng and Han, 1994; Zhang et al., 1996; Sun et al., 1996; Starovoytov et al., 2007)."

"At the Kemi Mine, a recent expansion into the Surmaoja orebody required an increase in ventilation capacity. A new ventilation shaft was built with two main fans. The installation is near the entrance gate and only 1.7 kilometres from the nearest permanent dwelling. The main fans were first taken into use as exhaust fans in October 2014. Shortly after the fan installation, comments concerning fan noise were received from the neighbours. The first noise measurements were taken at the main fan installation site by Outokumpu personnel in March 2015. Due to higher than expected recorded values, during late June, 2015, a two-week environmental noise study was planned by the engineers and executed by a consultant specialized in noise measurement. The measurement results were analysed and compared to the requirements of the environmental permit and Outokumpu’s factory standards. While the measured values at the nearest dwelling were within the environmental permit limits, high noise values were recorded at the fan station. A second two-week study will be performed after construction of the main-fan heating station has been completed. Actions taken will depend on the outcome. INTRODUCTION The Kemi Mine is a part of the Outokumpu chain of integrated ferrochrome and stainless steel manufacturing in the Kemi-Tornio region in Finland. The mine itself is a large underground operation with a production capacity of 2.7 million tons of ore per annum. It is also the European Union’s only chrome mine, and at present (2015) the mine extracts 2.4 million tons of chrome ore per year. Safety, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness are hallmarks of the Kemi Mine. Environmental impact produced by the operation of the mine is limited due to the insolubility of the oxide chromium ore, the gravity-based and chemical-free enriching process as well as the closed circulation system of the process water which serves both the whole mine and the enrichment process (Outokumpu, 2015). Importance of the environmental impact of the Kemi Mine is amplified by its closeness to the cities of Kemi and Keminmaa with the nearest habitants living less than 2 km away from the mine site. To show the cooperation with residents the Kemi mine organizes special “neighbour days” for the habitants of the areas closest to the mine. Also, information letters are sent to the neighbours, when changes that may affect the neighbours are being planned and executed."

A long-term, large-scale, disturbance-recolonization experiment with relevance to the environmental effects of deep seabed mining is described. The study is funded by the German government and was launched in the abyssal eastern tropical South Pacific Ocean in February-March, 1989. After obtaining pre-impact baseline environmental data, a 10.8 km2 (4.2 sq miles) circular area of seafloor was disturbed using a specially designed "plow-harrow" device. An initial post-impact sampling series was carried out immediately after disturbance followed by a second post-impact sampling series six months after the disturbance. Plans call for repeated visits to the site at two year intervals to monitor the anticipated slow recolonization process until the area is inhabited by a new, stabilized community.

Utah International's Shirley Basin Mine is located in the Southeastern High Plains of Wyoming at an elevation of about 7,100 feet. The Shirley Basin area is a gently rolling semi-arid land. The uranium ore zone occurs at depths ranging from 270 to 350 feet below the surface. Overburden consists of poorly consolidated sandstones, siltstones, and clays. Underground mining was begun in 1960. Conditions were made difficult by high rates of water inflow and ground support problems. The development of a solution mining I or in-situ leaching technique allowed underground operation to be abandoned in 1964. Solution mining provided limited production from 1963 to July 1970. In January, 1969, large scale development of open-pit mining was begun. A 1,200 ton per day mill went "on stream" in March, 1971.

Introduction Mechanical classifiers consist of a settling tank with parallel sides and a sloping bottom equipped with a mechanism which continuously agitates the pulp and removes the settled solids. The functions served by mechanical classifiers include the following: (1) allow the particles larger than the desired size to settle in the tank and provide an overflow product with a minimum of oversize particles, (2) produce an overflow product of sufficiently high solids content to meet the requirements of the subsequent processing steps, (3) agitate the pulp and permit separation of the entrapped undersize particles so they can report in the overflow product, and (4) drain and remove the underflow solids from the settling pool. Various types of mechanisms have been used to agitate the pulp and remove the settled solids, which include: (I) endless belt and chain drags, (2) reciprocating rakes, (3) helical flights mounted on a rotating shaft which extends through the settling pool, (4) helical flights inside of a rotating drum which contains the classifier pool, (5) troughed conveyor belts forming the settling pool in the concave curve of the belt closely following the tail pulley, and (6) low-speed impellers agitating the underflow settled in the apex of cone-type mechanical classifiers.23 The principal use of mechanical classifiers has been in closed¬-circuit wet grinding; however, this application has been widely displaced over the past few decades by the hydrocyclone. The hydrocyclone installation, including its feed pump, offers lower capital costs and requires less floor space. Nominally it produces an overflow prod¬uct of higher solids content, compared with a mechanical classifier, for comparable classification size up to 400µm (35 mesh). However, these advantages of the hydrocyclone are being gained at the sacrifice of some of the advantages of the mechanical classifier. The mechanical classifier requires less power and has lower maintenance costs than the hydrocyclone and its feed pump. The underflow product from the mechanical classifier can have a higher solids content and contain less entrapped undersize particles than the comparable product from the hydrocyclone. Consequently, it is capable of operating at a higher classification efficiency. A reduced circulating load24, 25 results under these conditions in a closed-circuit grinding application. Other applications for mechanical classifiers include desliming, dewatering, and washing operations. Sand-slime separation may be achieved using one or more stages of mechanical classifiers. Typical applications would include washing and deslimining of concrete aggre¬gate or sand; glass sand; abrasives; oyster shells; phosphate rock; iron, nickel, and chromium ores; alumina; zeolites; solar salt; and precipitates from chemical processing. As an example for the latter, Bitzer26 recommended the use of mechanical classifiers for countercur¬rent cementation-in-pulp of copper from the leach liquor. Similarly, mechanical classifiers are used in uranium processing27 for separation of the barren sands from the pregnant leach solution. Depending on the particle size and the effectiveness of the sand¬slime separation, the sand product from mechanical classifiers may be drained to solids content approaching 84%. Thus, mechanical classifiers are frequently used as dewatering equipment for various applications, such as: 1) Make a product having suitable solids content for subsequent transport by belt conveyor. 2) Provide a drained product to reduce cost of drying. 3) Provide a drained, washed, heavy sand product for return to the circuit. 4) Recover fine values from dilute plant effluents from coal, sand, phosphate-rock, and iron-ore washing plants and from steel-mill flue¬dust scrubbers. 5) Drain residual reagents of a preceding process stage prior to conditioning with reagents of different characteristics, e.g., cationic¬anionic flotation of phosphate rock, iron ore, etc. Design and Operating Features The proper selection of mechanical classification equipment re¬quires that the properties of the solids and liquid are adequately de¬fined. The following descriptive information regarding the solids is desired: feed rate, chemical and physical composition, density, tem¬perature, size analysis, and desired separation size. For the liquid used, the following data would be needed: feed rate, density, viscosity, pH, and temperature. Settling Area. The pool area required to permit a particle larger than the separation size to settle depends on the density and shape of the particle and on the density and viscosity of the pulp within the classifier pool. These criteria of the solids and pulp determine the settling rate which, in turn, determines the settling area required. Determination of the settling rate by long-tube batch tests can be used to calculate the settling area. A theoretical approach for estimat¬ing the settling area requirements is discussed in Chapter 1, Classifica¬tion Theory. This procedure can be used when neither test data nor empirical data from similar operations are available. Data on settling-area requirements and settling rates have been compiled by the manufacturers of mechanical classifiers. The approxi¬mate settling area required for a particular separation size can be estimated by using the curve shown in Fig. 65. This curve applies for closed-circuit grinding applications. For dilute velocity classification in open circuit, desliming, the length of the overflow weir, W, multiplied by the weir's mean distance from the feed opening, E, is used as the design criterion, instead of the settling area, in sizing the classifier.
