Most tailings storage facility (TSF) failures occur in active, upstream-type TSFs, often due to extreme and unexpected weather conditions—specifically, heavy rainfall and strong winds. This case study of a TSF in southern Arizona examines the use of the optimum safe beach distance (Doptimal, the optimum distance between the crest and decant pond) as a tool for monitoring geotechnical stability and reducing catastrophic failures. A digital model of the TSF was used to determine the critical beach distance (Dcritical) under normal weather conditions, and Doptimal was then determined by adding incremental distances to account for the effects of heavy rainfall (Drainfall) and strong winds (Dwind). To overcome accessibility issues, a drone was used to map the TSF geometry and create a digital model. This model served as the basis for conducting a coupled stress-seepage, finite-element (FEM) analysis with a safety factor of 2.0 to assess geotechnical stability (Dcritical). The safe beach distance increments were determined using the PMP (probable maximum precipitation) and possible maximum wind speed. Based on this analysis, the optimal safe beach distance at the study site was identified as 202.2 m. Since the current beach distance (371 m) exceeds this value, the TSF was considered to be stable and satisfied the design safety factor of 2.0. However, this distance should be reassessed periodically to account for changes in the TSF geometry and other conditions. Furthermore, it applies only TSFs that are well-managed and feature a smooth, non-undulating beach surface with a consistent slope.

Low flotation recovery and selectivity have been long-standing problems in the treatment of most ultra-fine phosphate ores. This paper investigates the improved flotation of two ultra-fine Brazilian phosphate ores from Itafos’ Arraias project. These ores are predominantly composed of quartz, muscovite, apatite and a Ca-Al phosphate. As a result of fine phosphate dissemination and associated grinding requirements, column flotation was selected for the metallurgical test program to address the inherent limitations of fine particle flotation using conventional flotation cells. Accordingly, both benchtop Denver cell and laboratory column flotation tests were conducted to optimize their respective flotation responses. Improved flotation performance was achieved using column flotation as compared to benchtop mechanical flotation. In column flotation, a P2O5 concentrate grade of 30.5-31.0% was yielded at a flotation recovery of 83.7-85.1% for the 38x0µm generated ultrafines. The benefits of Eriez’ column flotation technology realized from this study include a higher degree of selectivity, increased recovery, and reduced collector dosage as compared to bench-scale mechanical flotation.

"Pareto analysis was used to investigate the failures database of a Hitachi EX1900 hydraulic shovel over one year of continuous operation. The hydraulic system and hydraulic links, hoses and piping were identified as the most critical system and subsystem, respectively. A three-parameter gamma distribution function was identified as the best fit for a probabilistic modeling of the time between failures (TBFs). This distribution was used in a Monte Carlo reliability analysis of the hydraulic system. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), within the context of a time series analysis of the TBFs, was proposed as a viable alternative to the traditional technique of distribution fitting. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) metric was used to compare the two models. The MAPE value that resulted from the ARIMA was 66 percent smaller than that from the traditional technique in predicting the TBFs.Resumen ¦ Se usó análisis Pareto para investigar la base de datos de fallas de una pala hidráulica Hitachi EX1900 durante un periodo de un año de operación continua. Nearly all of the sulphur produced in the world today is converted to sulphuric acid and 49 % is used in the manufacture of fertilizers. In the last few years we have seen the beginning of another chapter in the volatile history of sulphur as the severe shortage of 1963:-67 has been transformed into present-day surplus. Prospects for further aggravation of this situation in the years ahead seem assured. In 1970, western world production showed a rate of increase of 4 -5%, which 1S somewhat less than that of 8% for the period 1963-1967. The rate of growth of consumption dropped considerably in 1968 when the demands of the fertilizer industry fell. During the same period of time, wide-spread demands have been set in motion for a clean environment which indicates that a fundamental change in sulphur supply, demand, and even sources, is likely to result from this upheaval. The sale of sulphur by Poland to the western world has increased and for 1970 was estimated at over one million metric tons. "INTRODUCTION Dramatic reduction in energy use and environmental impact can be achieved with sandwich belt high angle conveyors that serve as the vital link in any IPCC (In-pit Crushing and Conveying) system. These high angle conveyors are not new at all, but have not found wide use in IPCC systems where they can realize the greatest advantage. Reduced energy consumption and environmental impact, with IPCC systems, was already realized in the 1970s. With the bulk material haulage limited to conventional open trough conveyors the most direct path out of the open pit was precluded, requiring low angle spiral ramps and/or deep slots and/or tunnels through the high wall of the open pit. These excavations, to accommodate the low angle limitations, represented undesirable impact on cost and on the environment. Against this backdrop, a major study in 1979 sought to develop high angle conveying systems that could continuously haul the mined bulk material directly out of the pit, along the high wall – the shortest distance between the two end points. Between 1979 and 1982, that study developed sandwich belt high angle conveying systems that utilized all conventional conveyor equipment including smooth surfaced rubber belts that could be continuously scraped clean. These systems had all of the positive features of conventional conveyors but overcame the angle limitation. By hugging the bulk material between two belts, the material’s internal friction could be developed to facilitate conveying at any high angle up to 90 degrees (vertical). After an intense testing period (about one year) on the first large scale prototype system, commercialization began in 1983 with the installation of a 60 degree incline system at a western United States coal mine, elevating 2000 t/h of coal to a train load out system. It did not take a long period of scrutiny and acceptance before this high angle conveyor found use in the most rugged requirements of an IPCC system. This was only the second commercial sale, and after more than 150 commercial installations, it remains arguably the most significant high angle conveying system. In 1984, a copper mine in Serbia, already using pit perimeter crushing and conveying, decided to move their primary crusher deep into the pit and to use a sandwich belt high angle conveying system to elevate the ore continuously, directly out of the pit, along the high wall to the pit perimeter where it then transferred to a conventional conveyor for the remaining haul to the plant. The system had significant features including 2000mm wide belts that elevated 250mm coarse ore, at 4000 t/h, over six 15-meter high benches for a total 90 meters of net lift. The system was able to reduce the truck haulage fleet by ten 200 ton trucks realizing great cost savings, zero emissions to the air and greatly reduced traffic congestion in the pit. The system operated successfully until 2002 when the mine shut down. Many successful sandwich belt high angle conveyors followed with the current count of commercial installations at more than 150. Despite the great success with this system, its use has not been repeated as part of an IPCC system."

With copper at its host depressed price in several years, producers are looking at every opportunity to cut costs in order to continue operating. Some of the measures that have been applied by different companies include reduction in manpower, high grading, and in some cases partial shutdowns. The most beneficial cost cutting measure implemented by Southern Peru Copper Corporation was to steepen the slope of the final pit limit from a conservative 37 degrees to an average of 48 degrees. By doing so, substantial cash outlays were saved. Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC) operates two open pit copper mines and concentrators in the southern part of Peru, about 150 kilometers from the Chilean bordar. The Toquepala Mine went into production in 1960 and the Cuajone Mine in 1976. Both mines use shovel, truck and train operations. The trains, which haul ore to the crusher or waste to the dumps, are loaded either directly by shovels or by a transfer system. The Toquepala Concentrator treats an average of 43,000 tons per day and the Cuajone Concentrator an average of 55,000 tons per day. Concentrates are shipped via a 200 kilometer railroad to the port city of Ilo where the SPCC smelter is located. The annual production in the smelter from both mines is 290,000 tons of blister copper.

Stillwater Mining Company has an extensive history with tunnel boring machines (TBM) at the Stillwater and East Boulder underground PGM mines in Montana. The first use of a TBM was a 4 m (13 ft) diameter main beam unit at the Stillwater mine starting in 1988, where 6.4 km (4 mi) of tunnels were driven parallel to the J-M Reef orebody on four different levels. TBM?s were central to the development of the East Boulder Mine as two 4.6 m (15 ft) TBM?s drove two 5,639 m (18,500 ft) parallel tunnels to access the J-M Reef; one of these units is still in service driving a 2,591 m (8,500 ft) access West of the East Boulder mine for the Graham Creek project. For the Blitz Project, a 5.5 m (18 ft) diameter main beam unit will be utilized to drive a 6,858 m (22,500 ft) ventilation and rail haulage level East of the Stillwater mine. TBM?s have been preferred method for developing new mines and sections of the J-M reef as the geometry and geology of the Stillwater Complex allow for faster development compared to conventional methods.

Barrick Gold Corporation installed an expert style control system on the grinding circuit at its Mercur mine. Barrick's main objective was to increase mill throughput by a minimum of 3%. The expert system team collected operating data and then created a knowledge base using Comdale/X expert system development software. The expert system moved from on-line "advisory" mode, testing of expert rules, to full process control in four weeks. Expert system control benefits include a 9-15% increase in mill throughput, consistent mill loading leading to less wear on SAG mill parts, and improved downstream process control.

"Bridgestone Americas opened the company’s first U.S.-based giant off-road radial (ORR) tire plant in November. The 139,000-m2 (1.5 -million-sq ft) plant, located on a 222-ha (550- acre) site in Aiken County, SC, will produce radial tire products, including 157-cm (63-in.) tires, used on mining and aggregate haul trucks.The plant, announced in 2011 as a $970-million investment, represents the largest investment that Bridgestone has made in the United States, and is also the single largest investment ever made in South Carolina. Although it had already been producing tires for a few months, the plant officially opened with a ceremony in November 2014, attended by South Carolina federal, state and local elected officials, as well as Bridgestone personnel from the United States and Japan. Prior to the Aiken County plant’s construction, all of Bridgestone’s giant ORR tires were manufactured at its Shimonoseki and Kitakyushu facilities in Japan.Kurt Danielson, president of Bridgestone’s U.S. & Canada Commercial Group, said the facility was built to primarily serve the North American mining and aggregate industries in a more efficient manner. "It’s a real change for us," he said of the U.S.-based plant at its opening ceremony. "This allows us to have a true global presence."The Aiken County plant is intended to allow Bridgestone to meet customer demand for ORR tires, Danielson said. "It really frees up our other plants in Japan to service the rest of the world, allowing us to serve our customers faster," Danielson said. "As soon as we build (a tire), we can have it to our customers."Tires manufactured at Bridgestone’s Japanese plants could spend up to a month in transit to the American continents; from initial mixing of the rubber and other compounds to being warehoused, tires manufactured at the Aiken County plant can be ready to ship in four to five days.Danielson said most of the tires built in Aiken County will be used by customers on the American continents. "We will export," he said, "but our desire is to use as much capacity as we can for the Americas."Ground was broken for the facility inSeptember 2011, when commodity prices were much different than today and global demand for tires had skyrocketed."

The practice of blasthole mining is typically applied in competent ground conditions, primarily because of the open stope dimensions. At Magma Copper -Superior Mine, a field pilot project was completed examining a variation of blasthole mining in poor ground conditions. The results were very encouraging not only from a technical viewpoint, but also productivity viewpoints. This paper describes the pilot project and the resulting implications.

The empirical relationship between torque measured during installation and pile capacity has gained a wide acceptance in the helical pile industry in the last few decades. This paper presents a theoretical model developed to estimate torsional resistance of cohesive soils to helical pile installation. The proposed torsional resistance model was then used to establish torque factor, Kt, a factor that is widely used in the industry. The results of the study indicated that the Kt factor is a function of the load path (i.e. tension or compression), pile geometry and soil properties. The assessed Kt factors in tension and compression were validated by the results of 74 installation records and full-scale helical pile load tests. A parametric study was also performed to qualitatively assess the relative importance of different parameters that affect the Kt factors.

This one day field trip is sponsored by the Denver Region Exploration Geologists? Society, May 14th 2009. The trip highlights major geologic features and some notable uranium occurrences along the north-south mountain-basin boundary southwest of Denver and continuing north to Fort Collins, Colorado. Uranium deposits visited include sandstone?hosted roll front type and polymetallic veins hosted in metamorphic rocks. A replacement ?episyenite? type occurrence is considered via description and hand samples but is not visited owing to logistical constraints. Recovery methods addressed include underground mining and in-situ leach recovery. Samples of Precambrian basement rocks, deposit host rocks, uranium ore samples, and ore polished sections viewed by reflected light microscopy will be available. A road map showing the locations of the stops serves as the front cover of this field guide. The Robinson episyenite-hosted occurrence (not visited) is labeled as Stop 6. A stratigraphic column is provided which shows the position of the host rocks at each stop (Figure 1-1).

The research activities of the Minerals Research Laboratory, which is a part of North Carolina State University, is normally confined to solving beneficiation problems, and developing flotation processes for the mining industry. In recent years the laboratory has veered from its main purpose somewhat and has placed some emphasis on the manufacture of products from mineral concentrates. This has been the result of requests for help from industry. One such request came to the MRL from a talc producer in North Carolina who was having a difficult time competing with foreign imports of steel marking crayons. He felt that if a process could be developed whereby a satisfactory crayon could be produced from powdered talc at a low cost that he could compete.

During the recent expansion of precipitate copper production at the Chino Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation, Santa Rita, New Mexico, local studies of the dump leaching process were intensified. As these studies progressed it became apparent that a reliable method for locating leach solutions within the dump was required, since the contact between leach solutions and the copper-bearing material would determine, in great part, the recovery of values. In the past, the problem of determining leach solution contact has been attacked by various methods, including destructive testing (dump dissection), indirect observation (such as chloride or dye tracers), and mathematical or laboratory model studies. These methods have not proved completely satisfactory for the studies now being developed. Investigation of methods for in situ observation of leach solutions led to consideration of radiation logging in drill holes, which are petro¬leum exploration and development techniques for locating fluids and measuring porosity in the subsurface. Standard oil field logging equipment was leased, modified, and tested. After successful testing, the equipment was purchased for additional studies. Applications and results of the methods are described in this paper.

Mine workers in heavy and dangerous work are under several physical risk factors, for example temperature, humidity, noise, vibration, lighting and air velocity. Thermal comfort includes parameters such as air temperature, air humidity, air flow rate, radiant heat, metabolic rate and garment insulation. In this study, thermal comfort conditions were evaluated using thermal comfort indices defined as predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage dissatisfied (PPD) which were determined by measurements taken from an underground coal mine for approximately 100 days. Although the metabolic rate (light work) was kept at 2 met, it was found that predicted mean vote ranged between − 2.58 and 1.68. The predicted percentage dissatisfied index was found to reach 95%. According to the results, it can be seen that thermal comfort may have negative effects on occupational health and safety. The change in thermal comfort index values in the Soma Underground Coal Mine was investigated in detail and the reasons for the changes were determined. Furthermore, determining the optimal working environment for the mine workers was also an aim of this study.

The three-dimensional (3D) fractal dimension is an important parameter to analyze the 3D structure and flocculation effect of the hematite flocs. In this work, the 3D fractal dimension of hematite flocs was predicted by establishing the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm optimized with the back propagation (BP) neural network (PSO-BP). The proposed model considers four factors, namely, the flocculant quantity, flocculation time, stirring speed, and temperature, as the input parameters. We normalize the input data during the preprocessing stage. The BP neural network was optimized by using the PSO algorithm for realizing the 3D fractal dimension. The prediction accuracy and effectiveness of the model were evaluated. The experimental results showed that the predictions performed by the proposed PSO-BP neural network were better than that of BP neural network. In addition, the root mean square error (RMSE), mean squared relative error (MSRE), mean absolute error (MAE), and mean absolute relative error (MARE) of the proposed model are lower, compared with the errors of the BP network. Similarly, the measurement coefficient R2 of the proposed model is higher, compared with the BP network. The maximum absolute error of the model is 0.0772, the maximum relative error is 0.02405, and the regression coefficient r is 0.98592. These results showed that the proposed model has a good performance and high prediction accuracy. When verifying the practicability and the effectiveness of the proposed PSO-BP model, the prediction results of 10 groups of hematite flocculation experimental data under different conditions showed that the prediction value of the proposed PSO-BP model was closer to the ground truth as compared to the BP model. Therefore, the proposed model is suitable for predicting the 3D fractal dimension of hematite flocculation.

Southeast Asian countries cannot maintain their economic growth rate without the development of their mining industries. To make this development as sustainable as possible requires sound fundamentals securing not only economic progress and environment protection but also improvements in occupational safety and health (OSH) for the miners. Mining in South East Asia is still very labor intense and dangerous. Tremendous achievements from world class mining operations in advanced mining countries can be used as role models to improve the status quo of the Southeast Asian countries in OSH management. Know-how transfer, therefore, is a key factor for major improvements. Effects of this transfer based on a multi-level approach will be discussed based on a case study. It describes the transfer from German to Vietnamese hard coal mining industry. Crucial requisites for excellent achievements in OSH in Southeast Asian mining countries are also mentioned.

A modified push-pull field test and a computer model of cation exchange were developed to aid in evaluating cation exchange parameters prior to in situ mining. Reliable determination of these parameters is essential when modeling restoration of groundwater quality. The field test involves a much larger volume and much less disturbance to the ore sample than is feasible with laboratory measurements. This test can be performed in two or three weeks. It is relatively inexpensive, requiring one injection- production well and two or more wells for collecting samples of leach solution. The use of the model in interpreting test results is illustrated with field data from an in situ uranium mine. Much of the research was performed by the University of Texas at Austin, and was partially funded by the Bureau of Mines.

Experimentation was performed on the flotation of apatite and dolomite separately using anionic collectors in the presence of Mycobacterium phlei. Also, the flotation of mixtures of dolomite and apatite in the presence of anionic collectors and in the absence and presence of the bacterium were studied. It was found that M.phlei functions as a depressant for both minerals. However, it functions as a better depressant for dolomite than for apatite. Experimentation was extended to two different Florida dolomitic phosphate rocks. In this investigation a concentrate grade of less than 1.0% MgO was achieved.

The dressing of Bolivian tin ores has been done up to the present by classical. gravity methods, taking advantage of the high specific gravity of cassiterite compared with that of the accompanying gangue. For this purpose, jigs and shaking tables are used in the treatment of the various size fractions in which the ore is classified. Bolivian ores are mainly of the vein type and, to obtain a reasonable separation, crushing and several stages of grinding are necessary during the process to substantially liberate the cassiterite from the gangue. Gravity processes for cassiterite are effective for sizes down to 200 mesh. Below this size the efficiency of the gravity methods falls off very rapidly with increasing fineness of the mineral grains. The conventional treatment for this material is desliming followed by tabling on shaking tables various other types of machines have been designed for the gravity treatment of these fine particles but they have had limited success. Bolivian ores contain an appreciable amount of minus 200 mesh material constituted by "primary fines" caning from the mine itself, and "secondary fines" originated during the crushing and grinding necessary for liberation of the difficulty in the treatment of these fine particles is one of the causes why the recovery of tin in concentrates is only of around 50% in the mines owned by Corporacidn Minera de Bolivia, the State owned enterprise.
