Surface coal mining in the Appalachian region consumes a significant amount of energy in the form of diesel fuel and blasting agents. emission of oxides of nitrogen (Nox) from these sources represents an environmental challenge to the mining industry. this paper presents the results of research work related to determination of Nox emission of mining equipment and blasting agents, which is part of a broader industrial project conducted by the Appalachian research Initiative for environmental research (ArIeS). Data for this project are collected from an operating surface coal mine in West Virginia. the research work presented here may be used by mining professionals to aid in quantifying Nox emission and determine strategies for reducing its overall environmental impact.

Laboratory testing by the Federal Bureau of Mines has shown that the removal of insoluble slimes using selective flocculation and flotation is a viable method for treating low-grade potash ores which have a high content of water-insoluble impurities. Results indicated that up to 85 percent of the insoluble slimes could be removed from sylvinite ore containing 5 percent water insolubles and 13 percent K20 using nonionic or cationic polyacrylamide flocculants and cationic, anionic, and/or nonionic collectors. Subsequent potash flotation recovered up to 88 percent of the potash in rougher concentrates containing 47 to 57 percent K20. Sizing and cleaner flotation of the rougher concentrates upgraded the products to 60 percent K20. Filtration of the insoluble slimes flotation concentrates recovered 87 to 0 percent of the brine. Flotation concentrate filtration rates were 7 times faster than the filtration rates of mechanically deslimed products.

The integrated grouting method, as developed in the USSR, can be applied to multi-purpose operations that in¬clude the construction of shafts, drifts, and tunnels. In the USSR it has been used extensively for primary and final grouting of underground excavations in mining engineering and civil engineering projects. It has been applied in projects where the primary objective was waste contain¬ment. It has also been used to control subsidence beneath buildings located over mined out openings and to eliminate the flow of ground water beneath and around dams. This chapter considers several industrial applications in the form of case histories. The word integrated means that grouting activities were integrated with other activities. 9.1 CASE HISTORIES OF GROUTING FRACTURED ROCK WHEN SINKING VERTICAL SHAFTS The integrated grouting method has been applied most widely in the sinking of vertical shafts in fractured, satu¬rated rock. As explained previously herein, grouting oper¬ations preferably are carried out from the ground surface where they are integrated into the schedule of the setting up of the shaft excavation and construction equipment. Such integration reduces significantly the length of time required for preparation of shaft construction and the time required to sink the shaft. The increased efficiency is achieved by the elimination of cementing operations from the working face upon the penetration of each aquifer. Concomitantly, labor and energy consumption during shaft sinking are minimized because the more complicated and labor-intensive work is carried out at the surface section. Table 9.1 presents the essential parameters for the pri¬mary grouting of saturated fractured rock carried out by the integrated method when sinking vertical shafts. 9.1.1 NAGOL'CHANSK MINE NO. 1-2, VENTILATION SHAFT NO. 1 The integrated method of grouting saturated fractured rock through holes drilled from the surface was employed for the first time during the sinking of vertical shaft No. 1 at the Nagol'chansk mine No. 1-2 in the Don Basin. The shaft had an inside diameter of 6 m. The grouting operations commenced by using cement grout with a density of 1.7 to 1.8 g/cm3. Clay-based grout with cement and other addi¬tives was used only for grouting the aquifers where cement grout proved to be ineffective. By the time of the grouting of ventilation shaft No. 1, hydrodynamic analytical methods were well in hand and a preliminary method for designing isolation curtains had been developed. A method for designing and drilling ori¬ented directional drillholes whose natural curvature re¬flected the characteristics of the fracturing had been devel¬oped. The majority of the necessary equipment had been developed. Clay-based grouts were considered ready for the first industrial application. The hydrogeologic environment at the Nagol'chansk mine No. 1-2 contained many prolific aquifers. According to monitored drillhole data, the total expected inflow into ventilation shaft No. 1 without grouting was 425 m3/hr. This large ground water inflow rate was supported by in¬formation obtained during the sinking of the main shaft and from the auxiliary shaft of the "Nagol'chansk" mine No. 1-2. The construction contractor at the site began sinking ventilation shaft No. 1 to a depth of 217 m by cement grouting from the working face of the shaft. As a result of the cement grouting operations, the inflow of water was reduced from 105.4 to 40 m3/hr over this 217 m interval. However the residual inflow rate caused the shaft to become functional at the depth of 217 m. At this point all grouting operations were transferred to SPETSTAMPONAZHGEOLOGIA (STG) in an effort to improve the operation. In order to carry out preliminary grouting from the sur¬face, seven drillholes were installed and designed for re¬ceiving grout. Drilling was implemented by the ZIF-1200A rig to the design depth of the shaft. The geometry of the principal fracture system that would be encountered by the shaft was estimated while breaking ground using informa¬tion from other shafts. The drillholes were arranged so that they cut through the aquifers uniformly around the shaft. Some preference was given to intercepting the aquifers that were located along the rock dip above the shaft bottom because it was established that the ground water in the aqui¬fers flowed downward along the dip into the cone of de¬pression of the shaft. Investigations in the drillholes using the DAU-3M flowmeter described in Chapter 3 showed that all of the nine aquifers were penetrated by the time a depth of 690 m had been reached. The flowmetric information showed that aquifer numbers [1 and 2], [4, 5, and 6], and [7 and 8] had practically identical hydrogeologic characteristics; so it was decided to connect them into combined stopes and inject the grout using five stopes instead of nine. Table 9.2 shows the results of the grout injection into the aquifers. The volume of grout pumped into the separate intervals through single holes varied from 204 to 15 m3. Traditionally, molybdenum and vanadium have been used chiefly as alloy metals in steel. They impart similar characteristics to most steels, and to some extent one can be substituted for the other. In the United States during the 1950's the production of steel increased about 5 percent, and the reported consumption of both of these alloy metals in steel increased some 40 percent. In Europe during the 1950's the production of steel in¬creased nearly 100 percent. Data on the actual consumption of these alloy metals in European steels are not available, but production and trade records show that the European supplies of molybdenum increased about 150 percent and those of vanadium about 350 percent during the 1950's. If most of the molybdenum supplies in Europe are being added to steel, as seems likely, then the European steel industry has nearly caught up with the United State in the rate of consumption of molybdenum in steel. The vanadium supplies, on the other hand, are puzzling--unless Europe is adding mach more vanadium to steel than is done in the United States, it seems reasonable to assume that other uses are consuming moderately large quantities of this metal or that appreciable amounts of it are being transshipped from Europe. To the extent that a changing volume of supply signifies a changing pattern of use, the increased demand for molybdenum and vanadium in Europe should be of interest to domestic producers and consumers of these metals.

Minerals appraisers/valuers often find great difficulty in attempting to employ the sales comparison approach to the market value appraisal of development and operating stage mineral properties. An important factor generally overlooked is a comparison of net operating income (NOI) margins on a per-unit-of-production basis between mineral properties, whether these be demonstrated or forecast margins. NOI margins can vary greatly between mines or quarries that are producing similar products. Ultimately, the expected NOI margin determines what a buyer is willing to pay for an income-producing property. Here, common criticisms of the sales comparison approach by mineral appraisers are introduced. These are counterbalanced by raising some issues in the way the inputs for the income approach are usually derived by minerals appraisers and by review of some conspicuous examples of the much-too-common misuse or abuse of the income approach in market value mineral appraisals. Example transaction analyses and sales comparison analyses are used to demonstrate the author?s methodology for adjusting units of resource in his transaction adjustment tables. The examples are used as the basis for a discussion of ways to employ adjustments for operating economics and many other factors, while warning against the potential for double counting. The conclusions include a recommendation that minerals appraisers attempt to apply at least two of the three valuation approaches when appraising the market or fair value of development and operating stage mineral properties, the two being the sales comparison and income approaches.

Most of the production of copper in the United States comes from a few large companies. Often overlooked, however, are the more numerous small mining operations, which collectively produce a significant portion of the nation's copper. The objective of this paper is to describe the operations of a small mining company - Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation - how it views its place in this industry of giants, how it exploits the advantages offered by its relatively small size, and how it protects itself from the hazards being small introduces. Environment is, of course, a critical factor for such a company because it does not have the resources which help large companies weather periods of financial stress. Ideally, this environment is characterized by a heal thy economy, strong product demand, relatively stable prices , adequate grades and tonnages of ore commensurate with depth and over-burden, ready access to utilities, a dependable labor pool, and suitable technical "know how". When the environment is right, properties which were previously uneconomical to operate attract the attention of companies whose primary interest is a return on investment commensurate with risk over a reasonable period of time. Naturally, the amount of the investment and the duration of operation determines the size of the company which would be interested in such a venture. Such is the case with Ranchers Bluebird Mine at Miami, Arizona - a small property operated by a small company in a favorable economic environment.

This is done with extemive research of numerom case histories in Illinois collected by the authors. The howe response to substience-itiuced ground displacements are summarized and evaluuted. A damage level criteriu, specifically developed for residenttil structures, is presented based primarily on repair costs. Damage levels and the associated subsidence profile characteristics for each case history are compared.

The increasing demand for coal and depletion of shallow depth reserves are pushing towards deeper mining. In deeper coal mines with multiseam workings, the problem of ventilation surges many folds primarily related to air quantity requirement, heat, humidity and spontaneous heating/fire in goaved (gobbed) out areas. The paper describes the design of a new approach to improve the ventilation system of a real-life deep underground coal mine with multiseam workings. For this, the ventilation problem of one deep underground coal mine 6&7 pits Bhutgoria Amalgamated Colliery of Tata Steel Ltd. with multiseam workings has been studied in detail to determine an appropriate solution. A ventilation survey of the mine and computer simulation of the ventilation network has been carried out to reach a practical solution. Ventilation survey results have been analysed to develop a representative ventilation network of the mine for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Further, computer simulation of the ventilation network of the mine has been performed to virtually verify the application of a highcapacity booster fan in the present ventilation circuit without disturbing the vulnerable areas. Field validation is also carried out after the implementation of the solution in the mine to determine its efficacy. Thus, the findings of this paper can be directly applied for the installation of booster fans to achieve the required air quantity in deep underground coal mines with multiseam workings having spontaneous combustion liabilities of upper seam goaved out areas.

In 1984 a high temperature heat recuperation system was installed in the pellet plant of the National Steel Pellet Company located in Keewatin, Minnesota. The system is similar to those of Cleveland Cliffs Empire and U.S. Steel's Minntac operations. It recovers hot process air from the cooler by induced flow, and directs it to an intermediate zone between the drying and preheat zones on the grate machine. This system recently underwent further modifications in April 1985, following initial operation in 1984. The M. A. Hanna Company, which manages the property, developed the design criteria and made the subsequent recommendations for modification through its research facility in Nashwauk, Minnesota.

A pilot plant was constructed and operated to investigate the column flotation of 20 x 200 mesh North Carolina phosphate ore, using high throughput, high solids operating conditions developed at the NCSU Minerals Research Laboratory. Flotation was performed at 45% solids in a 9.5 cm (3.75 in.) diameter by 2.26 m (7.4 ft.) tall column at throughputs of 19.1 t/hr/m2 (2.0 stph/ft2) and 31.7 t/hr/m2 (3.3 stph/ft2). Recoveries in excess of 98% of the phosphate value were obtained at the lower throughput -- while obtaining concentrate grades containing over 28% P205 (61.2% BPL) at that recovery. Recoveries of about 95% of the phosphate value were obtained at the higher throughput, while making a concentrate averaging 27.6% P209 (60.3% BPL). In addition, a better understanding of the variables governing the column flotation of coarse nonmetallic minerals was gained. Low air flow rates adversely affected concentrate grade at the lower throughput. At the higher throughput, phosphate recovery decreased at an elevated air flow rate. An unexpected result of the study was the effect that frother type had upon phosphate metallurgy. Use of Nottingham Econofroth 925 provided better flotation selectivity than American Cyanamid F-65 at the low throughput. This is significant since the high' throughput tests were conducted with F-65 exclusively. It is reasonable to expect further improvement in high throughput performance when the optimal frother type and dosage are determined.

With the increasing demand for minerals and the decline in the quality of ore reserves, technologies to maximize recovery are critical to a mine?s economic success. Many mining waters exhibit the potential to form hardness-based inorganic scales, which inhibit effective mineral recovery. Often, a continuously-fed chemical deposit control program is implemented by the mine site to inhibit these scales. The use of retractable scale coupons is the current industry standard for monitoring these programs; however, a key drawback to their use is the limited, and sometimes untimely amount of information they provide. A proprietary fouling analyzer has been developed that can be used to continuously monitor the formation of inorganic scales in mining process streams. Consequently, it can be used to continually, and more effectively, communicate the efficacy of an antiscalant program, thereby providing the ability to compare different scale control programs and to optimize their feedrates. Case studies presented validate the applicability of this technology to help optimize mineral recovery.

Lupin is located on the shores of Contwoyto Lake at lat. 65° 48'N, Long. 111° 15'W and lies about 80 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. Since start up in 1982 the mine has produced over 2.15 million ounces of gold from 6.66 million tonnes of ore grading 10.63 gm/tonne. Total remaining reserves at 1993 year end were 5.1 million tonnes at a grade of 9.11 gm/tonne (1.65 million ounces). This is sufficient for 7 -8 years at the present annual production rate of about 200,000 ounces. The Centre and West Zones of the deposit are open to depth. The deposit is in an Archean metaturbidite sequence of the Contwoyto Formation, which has been mapped as part of the Yellowknife Supergroup of supracrustal metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks making up part of the Slave Geologic Province. These rocks have been subjected to regionar and contact metamorphism and to several phases of deformation. Six stages of Archean plutonism have been identified and all Archean rocks have been cut by Proterozoic diabase dyke swarms. Gold mineralization in the Lupin deposit is commonly fine grained and associated with pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite in amphibolitic banded iron formation. The gold-bearing portions of the host iron formations are characterized by the presence of multiple quartz veins and the pervasive replacement of grunerite by hornblende. In sparsely mineralized portions of the host iron formation, zoning of sulfides about quartz veins is clearly seen with the arsenopyrite halo being more restricted around the veins than the pyrrhotite halo. In well mineralized portions, quartz vein densities approach one vein per metre along strike. In these areas pyrrhotite distribution in the iron formation is more pervasive and the rock takes on the appearance of a banded sulphide rock.

Passage of the Public Utilities Regulatory Policy Act ("PURPA") in I 978 created an entirely new industry that is referred to today as the Independent Power Producers ("IPP"). Requirements of project owners, environmental compliance, project design, the financial community and most of all, the need to be a low-cost producer presented a unique situation for the sourcing and the utilization of fuels. Depending on the specific type of project being developed, (e.g. coal-fired, wood/biomass, natural gas, petroleum coke or a blend of several fuel types) and the type of boiler design, it is important to acquire fuels that will optimize both the project's operating efficiency and flexibility. This paper will focus on the acquisition of fuel for coal-fired projects, but will describe the necessary steps in the sourcing, contracting for, and the utilization of fuels and transportation resources in the IPP industry today.

Anthracite is widely known as a domestic or space heating fuel. The prevailing market ratio of domestic to industrial consumption was about 80 to 20 up until 1950. Since then it has been shifting until now the ratio index is about 50/50, exclusive of overseas export. Despite a declining domestic space heating market, the demand for industrial anthracite remains good. However, as a result of stringent air pollution regulations, there is a renewed interest in this low sulphur coal which cannot smoke under any conditions. Anthracite serves other important industries such as power generating, metallurgical, cement, ceramic, chemical, water sewage and industrial wastes filtration. Anthracite is an excellent natural source of carbon and may be utilized in many processes.

Spent potliner is generated in the electrolytic process of reducing alumina to make aluminum metal using molten fluoride electrolytes. Spent potliner (SPL), obtained at the end of the pots life contains a small amount of cyanide and fluoride which present environmental problems. SPL became a listed hazardous waste under RCRA (K088) in July, 1990. One of the possible uses of spent potliner is as a substitute for Calcium Fluoride (CaF2) as a fluidizer in iron-and steel making and in the glass industry. A low viscosity and a low melting point are prime requirements for accomplishing the above. In the present study, viscosity measurements were performed. Effect of various additives, such as sand, limestone, dicalcium silicate dust, and MgO baghouse dust on the viscosity of SPL was studied. The results showed that with the addition of sand and limestone, very high fluidity of SPL melt can be obtained at significantly low temperatures. The results suggest that spent potliner mixed with additives could potentially be used as a substitute fluidizer.

Lead concentrates from Kuroko (black ore) mines, which contain Cu 4 ? 7%, Pb 55%, Zn 3 - 7%, As 0.5 - 0.9% are treated by hydrometallurgical process in order to smelt the product by electric furnace smelting together with other lead resouces from Kuroko. The hydrometallurgical pretreatment involves sulfuric acid leaching at first stage, ferric leaching at second stage. This paper describes the short history of lead recovery from Kuroko and the performance of laboratory test, pilot plant and commercial operation.

The Kennecott Ridgeway Mine in South Carolina is scheduled to complete mining and ore processing in the last quarter of 1999. Tailings are disposed in a 300 acre, lined tailings impoundment. To facilitate closure and reclamation, modification of the tailings impoundment operation has been adopted. Mining involved the sequenced development of two open pits. In 1996 mining of the South Pit was completed and backfilling of the pit with waste rock from the North Pit was initiated and will continue until mining ceases. Both pits will be reclaimed as fresh water lakes. This paper presents the physical, geochemical and hydrogeochemical evaluation of the operational and post operational management of the project. Comparison of the operational monitoring data against predicted performance is reviewed.

"Coal bumps, also referred to as dynamic failure events or coal bursts (Lawson, Weakley, and Miller, 2016), continue to be a hazard in underground coal mines. While current design methods have significantly reduced the occurrence of coal bumps, they have not been completely eliminated. This paper investigates a correlation between coal compositional components, coal molecular structure, and probability of coal bumps in an effort to deepen understanding of coal behavior in an effort to reduce hazards in underground coal mines.Samples from the Penn State Office of Coal (PSOC) Department of Energy Coal Samples (DECS) were obtained for Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis using the KBr pellet method. Peaks indicative of the coal molecular structures were obtained using spectral integration software. These data, combined with published elemental data, were compared to historic bump occurrence in order to establish a possible correlation. Finally, results based on multivariate analysis of the elemental and FTIR data with bump status as the dependent variable suggest that elemental sulfur and molecular structure can be used as an indicator of bump susceptibility within the sample set considered.INTRODUCTIONThe study of coal requires consideration of multiple variables: percentages of organic and inorganic components, organic component origins, coal age, pore structure, cleat density, elemental composition, etc. Examining coal in situ increases the number of variables, such as coal depth, seam thickness, surrounding stratigraphy, and so forth. This collection of variables influences the subsequent behavior of coal simultaneously, and weighing their relative impact is a challenge for researchers. “A problem never exists in isolation; it is surrounded by other problems in space and time” (Ackoff, 1956). Having a substance such as coal that we know so much about, and yet so little, we have to ask what can be learned.An experimental study using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was undertaken to determine if the chemical structure of coal contains information which may lead to a better understanding of triggers or attributes which may, in turn, lead to an increased probability of a dynamic failure event. While a full analysis of the factors driving dynamic failure are beyond the scope of this study, it is possible that a better understanding of the chemical structure of coal will lead to an increased knowledge of its inherent behavior, including its propensity to burst."

Numerous researchers have addressed the complexity of the direct flotation separation of apatite from low-grade phosphate ore. The majority of these studies were limited to the micro-flotation scale. In fact, there is no warranty that a reagent scheme that showed a direct flotation of apatite at a micro-flotation scale on pure minerals would automatically replicate the same expected results on the natural ore in the mechanical flotation cell and so was the case for the phosphate ore studied. The overall trend was concentrating apatite in the non-float product. This study aspired to thoroughly assess the flotation performance of this never-exploited low-grade sedimentary phosphate using design of experiments (DOE). Unveiling new insights on such a strategy twist, various parameters and operating conditions, namely, desliming, type of collector and depressant, reagents dosages, conditioning times, flotation time, and pH, were addressed by multiple-factor screening using asymmetrical fractional factorial design followed by statistical interpretations. The collectors tested were the sodium oleate and a fatty acid mixture (FAM). The depressants tested were sodium alginate (NaAL), corn starch, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), and sodium silicate. The results of the multivariable analysis revealed that desliming, pH, collector dosage, and flotation time significantly influenced the flotation process. Desliming was beneficial for the yield, P2O5 recovery, and SiO2 removal; however, there was still a compromise between grade and recovery. A strongly alkaline pH value of 12 stood out from the whole range. P2O5, CO2, and SiO2 grades of the products and flotation recoveries were improved, except for P2O5 recovery, which was negatively affected. A collector dosage between 2000 and 3000 g/t increased the P2O5 grade and reduced CO2 grade and recovery, enhancing the apatite/carbonates separation. A flotation time of 15 min was significant for P2O5 grade and CO2 recovery, nevertheless, at the expense of yield and P2O5 recovery. The products having initial concentrates of 28.08% P2O5 with a recovery of 88.96% and 29.41% P2O5 with a recovery of 62.71% were obtained using 25 g/t of NaAL and 2000 g/t of the collector FAM and sodium oleate, respectively, at pH 12.

More than eighty years ago, in what we generally consider a more leisurely age, workers and engineers began the construction of the longest railroad tunnel in the world. When completed, the Simplon Tunnel ran more than twelve miles through the alps to connect Switzerland and Italy. Work began in 1898 and the tunnel was completed in 1905. In all it took about seven years to build one of the world's great tunnels. More than seven years ago, in what was hoped to be a rapid and constructive to the deaths of 38 workers in two spectacular tunnel disasters in 1971, the secretary of Labor's Construction Advisory Committee on Safety and Health began in January 1972 a search for an effective standard on tunnel safety. Much hard and useful work has been done, especially by the construction advisory committee' but more than seven years later, we still don't have a tunnel standard. We may speculate that, when the Simplon Tunnel was completed, workers and their bosses assembled to celebrate their achievement and to count their casualities. We have no need to speculate on the lack of achievement up to this time. An so far as I know, the bureaucrats have suffered no casualities except perhaps some unreported cases of ring-around-the-color. The only moral I can draw from all this is thai it is easier to penetrate solid rock than it is to get through bureaucratic fog. We can only hope that OSHA will finally take advantage of the work which was finished years ago and complete the actions necessary to give us a tunnel standard.
