High pressure grinding has been introduced into many grinding applications. The high pressure grinding roll offers capacity increases of existing plants and savings in operating costs. Also metallurgical advantages could be achieved. The first high pressure grinding roll in a copper mine was commissioned in Arizona in July 1995. This paper provides information about the operating experience gathered during the first months of operation. The current flowsheet will be described as well as further options for plant arrangements.

This paper details Keeler/ Dorr-Oliver's experience with the application of fluid bed combustion technology to the burning of coal-mining waste. The designs of two stage fluid bed combustors/dryers are demonstrated as useful in the drying of coal, slag and coke, using coal and coal refuse (gob) as fuel. Anthracite mining refuse (culm) is more than abundant in Northeastern Pennsylvania. After demonstration at Shamokin, Pennsylvania, a full commercial-sized fluid bed boiler using culm is used for district heating in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Limited research work has shown the utility of using fine coal as filter aid in sludge in¬cineration. With the rising avenues of the suitability of coal as auxiliary fuel in fluid bed sludge incineration, an expansion of these concepts combines the use of coal or coal refuse as filter aid and auxiliary fuel. Since the beginnings of, the human struggle for survival and improvement, mining has been one of the basic endeavors of life. Until relatively recent times it was classed as an art. Now we are at work trying to, raise mining to the level of an engineering science where it belongs if we are to prosper. It should be self-evident that this goal can be attained only through industrial progress: based on education and research. It is true that our industry, left to itself, will develop a few new ideas and techniques through the years. However, we mining' engineers are relatively few in number compared to the other disciplines, and the rate of our improvement by such "accidental" discoveries is simply tooslow to keep pace with the rest of our technical civilization. It will be evident in the remarks that follow, that the rapid development of mining education, research, and the industry are extremely interdependent, and will be largely controlled by the amount of cooperation, support, and cross-fertilization that can be developed among all three.

Stability analysis and design of open pit slopes is generally based on an assessment of rock cores and rock exposures on surface or in underground workings. Until recently, core for such assessments has been readily available from exploration drilling programs. In recent years, many exploration programs have reduced the amount of coring and rely more heavily on less expensive rotary or percussion drilling programs where drill cut-tings are sampled for geological evaluation and assay. This paper describes a technique whereby costs of the geotechnical investigation are reduced by using rotary percussion drilling information to assess geotechnical properties of the rock mass. A limited number of core holes are required to establish basic relationships between the mechanical properties of core and the characteristics of the percussion chips. These properties are used as a basis to extrapolate the coring information to encompass the entire area of the rock mass for which percussion drilling information is available.

Historically, the development, collation, and use of this information for design have been costly and time consuming. With the application of a digital computer, however, the effort expended can be reduced and maximum effective use of the geologic information realized. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the feasibility and convenience of using a computer to Store and manipulate geologic data for use in mine and process plant design.

Process plant modeling in the computer environment has been developed over the past 40 years by implementing the comminution models formed by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre, University of Queensland, in the early 1970s. The models for the other processes in a mine value chain, such as blast fragmentation and flotation, were continuously developed and improved in parallel as well. Other research and commercial entities have also developed process modeling methodologies in the computer environment, which evolved as specialized commercial software or through equations set up in Excel spreadsheets. These were performed on a local computer, in thousands of simulations over a long period of time due to hardware limitations and the lack of a fully automated process. This limits the application of detailed process simulations for scale-up and strategic planning analysis, as they require many simulations to cover all possible scenarios which would take a lifetime when using local computers. The Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES), as the next generation of cloud-based software package, has made it possible to run simulations on the entire operation value chain in the same platform, including drilling and blasting, crushing, grinding, flotation, and other downstream process and material-handling units. This capability has allowed IES to handle multivariable simulations across the mine value chain, including pre-concentration and in-pit size reduction, and modify the process simultaneously.

In this study, the effect of colemanite and calcined colemanite (CC) addition on the properties of iron ore pellets is studied. The pellets are prepared in a lab without and with 0.2% colemanite and varying amounts of CC from 0 to 1.0 wt%in steps of 0.2%. A reference pellet is prepared under typical plant conditions, and the properties of the reference pellet are considered as the base value for improving the cold compressive strength (CCS) while maintaining the other parameters at an acceptable limit without altering the pellet. The study also aims to provide a detailed characterization of colemanite and calcined colemanite to better understand their behaviour during firing. The lab-scale results show that the CCS of pellets made with 0.2% colemanite was reduced by 222 points (60%) as compared to the reference pellets due to crack formation during firing. The results show an improvement in the CCS of the indurated pellets with CC dosage up to 0.4%, and decreasing strength is noted thereafter. It is observed that the swelling index increases with the increase in calcined colemanite dosage. To simulate plant conditions, reference pellets and pellets with optimized CC dosage were fired in a plant furnace.

INTRODUCTION Nevada Goldfields began underground mining development at the Kingston Project in September, 1986, followed by mill start-up in March, 1987. The first gold pour in April followed three years of preparatory work in establishing a North American operational base for the production of precious metals by Golconda Minerals N.L., an Australian mining firm. GENERAL CORPORATE BACKGROUND The Golconda Group of companies was established in early 1983 in Australia. It began operations by successfully retreating tailings at several old gold mining sites throughout Australia. With the limited reserves available for tailings retreatment, Golconda began to look toward the future by conducting a gold exploration program in Australia. However, the continued high price of gold in Australia had limited the possibilities of acquiring good properties at a reasonable cost and consideration was given to looking outside Australia in addition to Golconda's domestic exploration activities. North America was favored because of the proven potential for substantial gold deposits, the established infrastructure which would allow for rapid and cost-effective development of new projects and the advantages of similar political and economic climates. In mid-1984, Golconda established an office in California and began an extensive study of over 100 prospects throughout the United States. Two prospects were identified as a result of this study whch showed merit; one was located at Empire, Colorado and the other at Aurora, Nevada. Negotiations were then successfully undertaken to acquire these two properties. Golconda's U.S. offices were moved to Reno, Nevada in early 1985 to facilitate management of its projects. To operate and manage these projects, a small Canadian company listed on the Vancouver Stock Exchange, Cannon Minerals, was acquired by Golconda and renamed Nevada Goldfields Corporation. The current structure of the company is shown below in Figure 1. A private placement of 2,575,000 shares of common stock at US54.00 per share was arranged by Jacksons Limited of Australia in association with W.I. Carr (U.K.) Limited of London. This placement resulted in US510.3 million being available in May, 1986 for the acquisition and initial development of the Aurora and Empire projects. While the financing was underway, project planning commenced on both the Aurora and Empire projects. The industrial desktop emerges as the new tool for continuous improvement and innovation in industrial operations. Here, process information, reliability maintenance, process simulation, production schedules, performance monitoring are integrated using Microsoft enabling tools at the desktop. A workflow model is presented to assist in implementing a strategic information system in metallurgical plants.

Operating and maintaining the heavy equipment used in open-pit mining operations is an ongoing challenge for mines. Typical operations employ a combination of shovels, wheel loaders, and haul trucks to excavate and transport the material for further processing. As this is the first point of contact for the material after blasting, it is often a bottleneck of all downstream processes, thus, equipment uptime and efficiency is crucial. Automated systems for bucket tooth monitoring, payload measurement, proximity detection, and rock fragmentation analysis will be examined. The impact of these systems on operation safety, efficiency, and reliability, in real-world scenarios will be investigated. The process of managing all the above fleet of equipment in a mine can be streamlined by connecting the equipment monitoring systems to a central server. Using the central server, the distribution of this information can be automated to ensure that the right people see the data in a timely manner, improving both proactive and reactive responses to threats to safety and productivity.

This paper presents a comparison between the simulations of a semi-empirical model and a theoretical model for the prediction of radial stress in rock. The results of the simulations were compared to the results of a field test. The comparison of the radial stress predictions shows that in the semi-empirical model use of the plane wave approximation as the basis for the prediction of the radial stress provides a much better result than the theoretical model. The theoretical model includes the correct elastic wave geometry and theory but fails twice, firstly by considering the charge as a point (unit) energy source therefore; and secondly by using a Delta function with a very sharp rise and decay time to simulate, with no distinction between non-linear and linear zones, the attenuation of the energy per unit volume at the shock wave front as the wave moves away from the borehole. The results of the semi-empirical model were within the same order of magnitude as the results from the field test whereas only one result from the theoretical model came close to the result of the field test. However, even this closer result for the theoretical should be taken with caution as there was no measurement in the field test made at this distance from the borehole. Finally, because of its potential portability, convenience, and cost-effectiveness the theoretical model can be a most valuable tool for mining and civil construction operators in the early design of blasting rounds and of the mining operation itself.

The particle-bubble attachment and the rupture of formed aggregates in flotation cell were investigated in terms of turbulent regime. It was found that the particle-bubble collision rate is closely correlated to the energy barrier between particles and bubbles, and no adhesion takes place for the hydrophilic particle-bubble system due to the introduced ?capture efficiency? f(a) being zero. The values of an especially defined Weber number, i.e. the ratios of turbulent stress to aggregate strength in the inertial subrange of turbulence were estimated, the results showed that the detachment of a particle from a bubble involved in an aggregate is mainly caused by the turbulent stress only in the impeller zone, no bubble splitting occurs both in the impeller zone and in the bulk zone.

The carbonatite orebody in Jacupiranga is situated some 230km (140-mi) southwest of Sao Paulo and is mined by Serrana S/A de Mineragao, producing an apatite concentrate for fertilizer production and a calcite tailing for cement manufacture (see Figure 1). The orebody (Table 1) is mined by open pit and the total production is 4.5 million mt/year of carbonatite ore with a further 2.2 million mt/year of overburden. The carbonatite low-grade ore (Table 2) is fed to the concentration plant at 460 mt/h , comprising of four parallel lines of grinding, by rod mills 2.7m x 4.5m (9 x 15-ft), operating in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. The grinding circuit product is deslimed in four stages using hydrocyclones and the deslimed product is conditioned with corn starch and subsequently floated, using fatty acids as collector to, recover the apatite.

Its a pleasure to be with you this afternoon and to talk briefly on one of my favorite subjects -- the U.S. sulphur industry. As our Chairman mentioned, I have been associated with the sulphur industry either directly or indirectly for the last twenty years, both on the production side and as a consumer. Sulphur, while unseen and relatively unknown to most people, is like margarine ... that ubiquitous spread ... that is yellow and nearly omnipresent in the industrial world. It is because sulphur, in some form, is required in nearly all aspects of our economy that makes its study so interesting to me as a researcher. An analysis of the sulphur outlook requires examination of such industries as fertilizer, paints and pigments, copper and zinc, uranium, petroleum, chemicals, pulp and paper and textiles - just to name a few. Of course, because its use is so widespread and ever-changing it is difficult to develop and maintain a good understanding of the sulphur industry. It is also a problem to cover the industry in a short discussion and to project its really dynamic nature. Hut, if you will bear with me, I will attempt the task. First of all, let me say that sulphur today is a world commodity and to a large extent moves freely in world trade; nearly a third of the world's sulphur or something over 15 million tons in 1974 entered international trade. However, today our interest is in the current changing sulphur picture in the U.S., with particular emphasis on the western part of the country.

Our industry is in trouble. Real trouble. It has never been an easy, secure business. But to-day it is engulfed in revolutionary currents. No longer can there be reliance upon the checks and balances of market forces. Supply and demand largely dictated the economics of business enterprise in simpler days. To-day politics, in particular nationalism become increasingly dominant. And as governments expand and put out tentacles of interference in the direction of the mining industry, far too little understanding is evidenced as to how that industry works. Then there is something which is relatively new -stagflation. As the prices of minerals falls, the capital investment required for new extractive facilities soars at rates which far outdistance those which are cited by governments to indicate the magnitude of inflation. To illustrate; 1) In 1971 it was calculated that $355 million would be required to bring the Cuajone property in Peru into production. Five years later that stage was reached at a cost of $680 million. 2) With the Caridad mine in Mexico, estimated capital investment doubled between 1971 and 1976. 3) The requirements calculated for Cerro Colorado in Panama have risen in two years from $560 to $800. 4) The budget of $240 million for Sar Chesmeh in Iran in 1971 had become $500 million by 1976.

Vast deposits of lignite occur in the Gulf Coast states and northern plain states. Lignite resources are cited to be over 43 billion tons in the Gulf Coast states. An additional resource of 16 billion tons are reported in North Dakota (Jackson, Smith, 1981). All lignite in the U.S. is mined at present by the open pit method. Draglines and scrapers are primarily used to remove the overburden. Bucket-wheel excavators are also being considered for new mines in the planning stages. Lignite seams are mined using front-end loaders, shovels and trucks, or Easi-miners. The depositional environment of lignite is weak sedimentary soils and rock. Ground water is often encountered within the mining depth. Surface water resulting from heavy rainfall or snow melt contributes to the problems of mining. Mining depths of up to 60 m (200 ft) are under consideration. Draglines exert additional loads on the highwalls and spoil piles. The combination of any number of these factors may cause instability of the slopes. Bearing pressure, trafficability, and settlement can also be a problem for excavation and loading equipment.

High purity MgO is widely used in various fields as an important magnesiumcompound. The separation of Mg and Ca is of great importance for the preparation of high purity MgO from dolomite. In this study, the key effects of carbonization temperature and nano-calcium carbonate agglomeration on the separation mechanism of calcium and magnesium have been investigated. The results indicated that the reaction in the carbonization process was stepwise. Precise control of the carbonization temperature was essential for the formation of Mg(HCO3)2 due to its low reaction efficiency at lower temperatures or decomposition markedly at higher temperatures. Meanwhile, there was a common-ion effect in solutions containing Mg2+ and Ca2+. Nano-CaCO3 particles were formed during carbonization and agglomerated with the prolongation of static time. A product with a purity of 99.56% MgO and 0.16% CaO was obtained under the optimized conditions: ratio of liquid–solid 30 L/g, carbonization temperature 22–25 °C, carbonization time 1 h, and refining time 4 h. This work has important guiding significance for the preparation of high purity magnesium oxide from dolomite.

In recent years the widespread problems of air and water pollution generated by both population and industrial expansion have become a major public concern. Therefore, many municipalities are striving to achieve more efficient wastewater treatment processes so these wastewater's can be reintroduced into the waterways of our nation with little or no detrimental effects on the future beneficial use of that water. With this, improved treatment comes an ever increasing volume of wastewater sludge which must be disposed of in a manner of minimal impact on the environment. Furthermore, with demand for energy continually accelerating in this nation, our concern over high oil prices and our increasing dependency on foreign oil sources, there has been an ever growing interest in the largest energy source that are nation has, coal. However, surface mining of coal can cause many environmental problems when adequate precautions are not faithfully adhered to. These problems include water pollution from silt and/or clay erosion and acid runoff, produced by oxidation and hydrolysis of pyrite; i.e., FeS2 + 3/02 + H20 + FeSO4 + H2SO4. One method of wastewater sludge disposal which can utilize large volumes of sludge for a beneficial project that may not compound our environmental problems is spray irrigation, to either depleted farmland or to abandoned strip-mined soils. Sludge is characteristically high in organics, as well as having near neutral to alkaline pH properties. With these two qualities it possesses a potential for neutralizing acid strip mine spoils, which would enhance the establishment of a vegetative ground cover. There are many methods to estimate costs quickly. One of these is the Parametric Method, where costs are estimated from general algorithms (or curves). Derived from an original tool based on the O’Hara model, a software called MAFMINE was developed. MAFMINE is based on parametric models to estimate investment and operational costs in mining. The software itself is based on the use of a computer model known as client-server. However, the model needs new inputs from advances made by the mining industry, mainly in terms of electrification, automation, digital transformation and preconcentration to face Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) concerns. Thus, this work was to prepare a new core module ready to incorporate the new technologies aiming to deliver operation and capital costs associated with environmental impact mitigation. The tool generates an order of magnitude estimate for CAPEX and OPEX to establish a very first Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) in a mining venture. For quick evaluations, at a preliminary level, the results are very promising.
