During the last few years high-tonnage plants have been designed with comminution circuits using semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mills, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR), or both, followed by ball mills in different configurations. A strong interest in improved energy efficiency and reduction of carbon footprint, along with the recent launch of new high-capacity crushers and stirred grinding mills, has driven the industry to investigate the development of novel flowsheets. This paper presents work based on recent projects that include modeling and simulation of two innovative circuits recently considered for current projects. One circuit uses autogenous (AG) mills and parallel trains of crusher-HPGR and the other is a modified three-stage crushing circuit with the use of HPGRs and pebble mills. The paper indicates the potential savings in operating costs provided by the HPGR-pebble mill circuit when compared to a more conventional SAG-mill-based circuit.

Compliance standards for respirable dust which are reduced because of high quartz concentrations have become an industry-wide problem. Research on the physical and chemical character of quartz-classified particles in respirable coal mine dusts indicates that they may exist in intermixed layers or may be coated by clay or coal material. The relative amount of intermixing varies with the coal seam being mined. If most of the quartz particles of a mine dust are "pure," then the dust may have a high fibrogenic risk potential because of truly free silica and the compliance standard should be lowered. If, however, the quartz is locked inside another material matrix, or coated, a reduced compliance standard may not be appropriate.

The potential worldwide "market" for metallurgical bauxite is about 94 million MT. The high degree of concentration of the alumina sector, combined with the high percentage of long-term contractual relationships, results in a small spot market with an illdefined price structure. Further segmentation occurs based on bauxite quality and alumina plant design. The potential 'free" market is estimated to be about 18 million MT that represent the requirements of nonintegrated alumina producers. It, too, is covered almost entirely by multi-year supply contracts.

A process has been developed and piloted to reject copper, lead, iron, phosphorus, bismuth, antimony, elemental sulfur, and insol from molybdenite concentrate without decomposing the contained molybdenite and rhenium. The impure concentrate is first heated with concentrated sulfuric acid at 260 to 290°C for 1 hour. This bake not only oxidizes the contaminating sulfides, but also activates the concentrate for later rejection of insol by flotation. Two stages of leaching follow the sulfation step. The first is an acidified water leach which extracts the oxidized copper, iron, and phosphorous; the second leach rejects the lead, bismuth, and antimony into a warm concentrated solution of sodium chloride. Final upgrading is achieved by conventional froth flotation. The chemistry of the process as well as results obtained from its implementation in a 5,000 lb/day pilot plant are presented.

The mining paradigm is changing on the continent of Africa. Jessica Kogel?s closing statement from her September 2013 President?s Page (ME, September 2013, pp. 6) has never been more appropriate, ?Africa is shaping up to be the next mining powerhouse, and there is huge opportunity for local communities, national governments and private industry to work together to create a win-win situation for all.? Supporting this notion, attendance at numerous industry conferences around the world demonstrates the shift toward a more sustainable, more environmentally conscious extractive model. But questions remain: How effectively is the industry making this transition, and how willing are companies to learn from the experiences of others? The international development community, as we like to call ourselves, is going through a parallel shift. We are experiencing our own funding crisis; governments are not as flush with resources as they were pre-economic meltdown. But more importantly, after a half century of implementing development programs, we must admit that while some of our programs have been fantastically successful, too many still fail to achieve the goal of poverty alleviation for the world?s poorest. Moving forward, we are forced to recognize that achieving success in scale and sustainability is not always accomplished from our work alone. As the director of international programs for Africare, a nonprofit with more than 40 years of experience implementing community-based development programs in Africa, I can report that our organization is changing the way we think about successful development partnerships. Africare recognizes that for too long the mining sector and nonprofits have been at odds, choosing noncommunication as a ?solution? to the problem. Both sides now recognize that this standoff is outdated, and Africare, specifically, is ready to cross the proverbial line. We see the potential benefits of mining for local communities and, when done responsibly, the opportunity to properly manage Africa?s resource boom as a benefit to all. There are challenges in this conversation. Many mining professionals view nonprofits as whistle-blowers, ready in a pinch to speak to news sources and complain about poor operational standards. Those are advocacy organizations, and while their role is important, they are not the only nonprofits interested in mining operations in developing countries. Organizations like Africare, with decades of experience implementing poverty reduction programs, approach this differently. We know we can work with mining companies to promote economic opportunity in the communities where mining operations are occurring. We recognize that the conversation is difficult, and we are open to discussions about how we can bring our unique experience to bear on the problems faced by mining companies in carrying out their investment programs.

Beneficiation studies were made by the Bureau of Mines to develop a process for concentrating phosphate minerals from the altered rock of the Phosphoria Formation. This report describes research on intermediate - and marginal-grade ores from southeast Idaho, The process developed consists of attrition scrubbing and sizing to produce a coarse concentrate; desliming at about 800 mesh (18.5 microns); flotation of the fine sands; roasting of the combined concentrates for removal of organic carbon and combined water; and leaching with SO2 for removal of magnesium and nonapatitic calcite. Results of continuous tests on three different ore types showed that approximately 80 percent of the available phosphate can be recovered at a grade suitable for phosphoric acid production. While leaching with SO2 is not necessary for all ore types, it is an important step in purifying concentrates containing excessive magnesium.

Accurate prediction of truck productivity plays a pivotal role in improving the efficiency and profitability of openpit mining operations. This paper proposes a deep neural network (DNN) model to overcome the challenge of predicting truck productivity in openpit mines. The prediction model was built using eight variables and was optimized by considering different train-test split ratios, numbers of hidden layers and neurons, and activation functions. The proposed model’s performance was evaluated using various metrics and compared with other commonly used machine learning algorithms. The results showed that the proposed model outperformed traditional machine learning models by achieving higher prediction accuracy. Moreover, a single-variable sensitivity analysis showed that haul distance is the most influential variable for predicting truck productivity. This study marks a pioneering effort in employing DNN to predict truck productivity in openpit mining, signifying a notable advancement in the field.

The advantage of using ammonium phosphate salt as flux is the selective precipitation of chromium(III) compounds, which are considered nontoxic and environmentally friendly. The technique in this paper is determined to have potential to be applied in the metallurgical industry, where it can be used in the beneficiation of chromite mineral ores. The higher chromium contents of chromite ores often require furnaces to run at higher temperatures of above 1,300 °C, which can cause shutdown of the ore processing plant and accumulation of the sticky chrome compounds — including toxic chromium(VI) waste — which are generated as byproducts. The other advantage of this technique is its low to moderate energy consumption compared to existing techniques.

This system represents the latest thinking in slurry pipeline design and is one of the main contributors to the viability of the SAMARCO Project. This paper presents the background, description and latest information on the system's operation. Watertightness is of central importance in hydraulic and underground structures but has always been associated with a risk, as demonstrated by the very high impact that water inflows have on the damage of linings and infrastructure (Howard, 1991; Sandrone and Labiouse, 2011). Concrete is vulnerable to groundwater and chemical contaminants in the soil. These can leach into the pores and cracks of the concrete and degrade its integrity, causing spalling and corroding the reinforcing steel. Moisture migrating into the building can also degrade structural elements over time and lead to mold and other hazards to occupants’ health. In this connection, the demands placed on the setup and detailed design of the seal depending on the negative influence by water on the one hand and on the other hand on the function of a construction in view to its watertightness classification. Thus, the reliable functioning of a seal is of particular significance in the case of traffic tunnels, which are not easily accessible for all subsequent repairs after the construction in seepage water and especially when located in a pressure water zone (risk–cost assessment). Requirements for the long-term efficiency and quality of underground structures have increased in recent decades. Today, the standard lifetime requirement for an underground infrastructure project is 100 to 120 years and, in some cases, even higher. This calls for high increased attention to the durability of the whole structure and of each individual element. Standards, which started as application guidelines given by the manufacturers, are available in the market since the 1980s and are constantly adapted to the current developments in various technical committees. Differentiations are made between: Manufactures application guidelines, case studies or published articles Test standards for the laboratory to guideline the testing procedures (air temperature, type of test equipment, dimensions, test speed, test duration, concentration, type of liquids, monitoring, tolerances, interpretation of results, documentation, etc.), developed by committees based on material and laboratory experts Application standards, which include test standards but also the related minimum performance requirements (values) for material, processing, and quality assurance (practical tolerances), developed by committees based on a wide range of experts (e.g., designers, construction companies, applicators, manufactures, owners, test institutes, quality engineers) and therefore also based on a wide field of experience, different views and up-dated case studies. The agriculture industry has made great strides during the past decade to increase agriculture yields through increased use of fertilizers. Increased use of fertilizers may prevent or at least delay mass starvation due to the alarming increase in world population. Phosphate was added to soil as a plant nutrient in the forms of calcined bones at least 2 000 years ago, (1) and man has used phosphate minerals as a source of fertilizers in one form or another for at least 100 years. During 1977 the world produced about 116 million metric tons of phosphate rock, with about 86% used for fertilizers and another 4% for animal feed supplements. More than three-fourths of the total production comes from the United States, Morocco, and the Soviet Union. From a mineral beneficiation point of view, the major sources of phosphate rock and the methods of beneficiation can be classified as follows. Marine deposits not containing appreciable carbonate minerals, marine deposits requiring a francolite carbonate mineral separation, igneous deposits not containing appreciable carbonate minerals, and igneous deposits, requiring an apatite carbonate mineral separation.

The production of salt through brining operations and the recovery of potash salts by means of solution with water constitute, in large measure, processes which have been used for many years. And although the salt industry has utilized dissolution techniques for years and years it has been only recently that a better understanding of the mechanism of solution has emerged. Greater adaptability of solution mining processes for recovery of valuable salts from ore bodies found at greater and greater depth has resulted in increased adoption of such methods. Because of the high costs of mining in beds of limited thickness, modifications probable when extracting mixed halites, and restrictions (mostly self-imposed) regarding the extent of cavern development to minimize or eliminate subsidence more information is needed on the solution mechanism. It is the purpose of this paper to present the fundamental aspects of the problem of total solution of salts and to point out the developments of certain solution mining techniques.

Shield leg pressure data from all shields and shearer locationwith time stamp from a mechanized longwall face are monitored and recorded in a surface computer. These data contain random noise due to power failure, leakage of legs, bad sensor reading and other maintenance or geo-mechanical problems. An algorithm is developed to detect mining cycle parameters such as setting and final pressures and duration of the cycle from these data for the analysis of periodic roof weighting phenomena. The intensities and persistence of periodic roof weighting are the vital information to the mine management to take judicious decision on longwall operation. The paper presents details of the algorithm which identifies 96% of mining cycles from the noisy data belonging to consecutive 5 months or 410 m of face advancement. Based on this analysis, 2 types of periodic roof weighting phenomena are detected, namely, (i) normal type—having peak intensity of 75 to 90% of yield pressure, interval of occurrences of about 10 to 15 m with persistence of 3 to 4 m and (ii) severe type—peak intensity over 90% of yield pressure, interval of 25 to 40 m with persistence of over 10 m. It is envisaged that these phenomena have direct relationship with main roof thickness, its overhung length and material properties.

"Twin Creeks is a gold mining complex that is part of Newmont’s Nevada operations. The mining complex is composed of two openpits, Mega and Vista, external ore sources and a set of existing stockpiles, all of which provide ore for an autoclave, an oxide mill and a heap leach. Mega pit provides sulfide ore for the autoclave, whereas Vista pit provides oxide ore for the oxide mill and the heap leach. Both pits operate the same mining equipment and their extraction sequence must, therefore, be optimized simultaneously. Stringent blending requirements are associated with the operation of the autoclave for the sulfide ore. Strategic blending optimization on a large scale has brought significant value to the operation by increasing synergies. This paper presents the implementation of a stochastic optimization framework for the long-term production planning at Twin Creeks that simultaneously optimizes mining, stockpiling, blending and processing decision variables. The uncertainty and variability associated with the different sources of material are incorporated in the optimization model by means of stochastic simulations. The stochastic solution generated shows substantial benefits by increasing forecasted recoverable gold, leading to increased cash flows, while reducing the risk of not achieving forecasts by increasing the probabilities of meeting production and blending targets.IntroductionMine operations consist of multiple components such as mineral deposits, stockpiles, external sources, mills and autoclaves. These components represent a mineral value chain, also known in the literature as a mining complex (Montiel and Dimitrakopoulos 2015; Goodfellow and Dimitrakopoulos 2016). The material extracted from the mines flows through the different components and is transformed into sellable products. This flow of material in a mineral value chain involves complex, nonlinear transformations that render the use of industry-standard optimizers difficult. Furthermore, the optimization of a mining complex can be formulated as a mixed-integer, nonlinear optimization program with millions of integer variables representing mining, blending, stockpiling and processing decisions, prohibiting the use of conventional nonlinear optimization approaches. Previous methods that consider the joint optimization of multiple components of the mineral value chain are available (Hoerger, Seymour and Hoffman, 1999; Chanda, 2005; Stone et al., 2005; Wooller, 2005; Whittle, 2007, 2010; Bodon et al., 2010). Although these methods add value by increasing the synergy between the different components of the mining complex, they rely on simplifying assumptions that constrain their efficacy, while ignoring a most critical aspect. The latter aspect includes the geological uncertainty and actual variability of the materials in the mineral deposits mined and are supplied to the related mineral value chain, similarly to conventional life-of-mine planning methods used for individual mines (Dimitrakopoulos, Farrelly and Godoy, 2002; Godoy and Dimitrakopoulos, 2011; Spleit and Dimitrakopoulos, 2017). Additional simplifying assumptions may include: the consideration of a limited number of components, the combination of different methods, the aggregation of variables, fixed production schedules the definition of policies prior to optimization, such as cutoff- grade definition or destination of mining blocks, the linearization of nonlinear transformation functions and/or the disregard for the uncertainty of several critical parameters (Whittle, 2007). The simultaneous optimization of multiple components of a mining complex was introduced by Newmont. Hoerger, Seymour and Hoffman (1999) implemented a mixed-integer programming formulation to optimize Newmont’s Nevada operations. The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) Mine is PT Freeport Indonesia's (PTFI) newest operation. Production at the mine began in September 2000. The DOZ Mine produces 25 kt/d (27,500 stpd) using mechanized block cave mining methods. The DOZ Mine has several major improvements when compared with previous block cave mines in the district. It has an independent and improved ventilation system, a flexible and efficient truck haulage system, and a more reliable crushing and conveying system. PTFI's copper and gold mining complex is located in the Ertsberg mining district in Irian Jaya, Indonesia (Fig. 1). The Ertsberg district is located in the Sudirman Mountains at elevations from 3,000 to 4,500 m (9,800 to 14,700 ft) above sea level. The topography is extremely rugged and rainfall in the mine area averages 3,000 mm/a (118 in./year). Freeport began production in the district in 1972 when the mill began processing ore from the Ertsberg openpit. Underground mining began in 1980 when the Gunung Bijih Timur-Ertsberg East (GBT) Mine was brought online using block caving methods. In 1991, the GBT Mine reached a maximum production rate of 28 kt/d (31,000 stpd). Ore from the mine was exhausted in 1994. The Intermediate Ore Zone (IOZ) was brought into production in 1994. It, too, used block caving methods and had a design rate of 10 kt/d (11,000 stpd). The IOZ is currently producing at a rate of 21 kt/ d (23,000 stpd). The DOZ was discovered in the mid-1980s by deep drilling from the GBT. The GBT, IOZ and DOZ deposits are all situated in the Ertsberg East Skarn System (EESS). In 1993, the first of several studies was completed that indicated that portions of the DOZ Mine could be economically mined using block caving methods. Limited development was started in 1995. Full-scale development and construction began in late 1997. The crusher and conveying system began operating during the first quarter 2000. The first of two main exhaust shafts has been com¬missioned, along with three of the four new main fans. The second exhaust shaft and fourth main fan will be in service by the end of 2001. Undercutting and production began in September 2000. The DOZ Mine will reach its design production rate of 25 kt/d (27,500 stpd) in 2003. A study is under way to determine if an ultimate production rate of 35 kt/d (38,500 stpd) is feasible.

INTRODUCTION Chuquicamata mine is a large copper open pit located in the north of Chile. It has been in production for more than 80 years and now is in the later stages of its life with declining grades and increasing haul distances. As any old mine with long established organizations and procedures, it has faced one of the most difficult managerial problems: to conduct changes. Since 1994, the new management team has been devoted to a modernization pro- gram focused mainly in restructuring business operations. downsizing the labor force and introducing a mine planning pro- cess consistent with the company's goal. The explicit identification of the latter issue has been made because of the management’s conviction about the importance of it in the profitability of the business. The mine planning process at Chuquicamata mine has evolved from an old manual technique towards a modern computarized system, however the fundamental aspects and the procedures involved in this process have been the same. For in- stance, the cutoff grades policy has not changed during the last said 20 years, regardless of the changes to grade distribution, commodity prices, plant capacities, etc. To review and rethink this process, the strategy was to work with a small group of inside engineers and the management in order to interact with several mining consulting firms. The idea was to open a discussion about the fundamental principles used in the mine planning activities and, at the same time, to explore new ideas to improve the operating practices that have been followed for a long time. Thus, the goal of this paper is to present the mine planning approach that was the result of this work and the improvements that were obtained. THE CHUQUICAMATA MINE The Chuquicamata division is one of the five operations of Codelco and is currently devoted to operating the Chuquicamata mine; a copper open pit, concentrator, smelting and refining complex. It also operates Mina Sur which consists of an open pit mine, a leaching-solvent extraction and electrowinning process. There is also a dump leaching and a Sx-Ew plant for treating the low grade suifide ore (under the cutoff grade) from the Chuquicamata mine. Prior to reviewing the mine planning process, capacities for the Chuquicamata sulfide line were 640 000 tpd of run of mine material, 160 000 tpd of ore and 4 200 tpd of concentrate. This meant a total annual movement of around 230 Mt in the mine and a treatment of 57 Mt in the concentrator with a stripping ratio of approximately 3: 1. The old exploitation strategy consisted of an "open scheme", which means that all benches must have a berm with enough space to allow the traffic of large haulage trucks. This fact implied working with a great flexibility, but the consequences were flat slope angles. One of the reasons for using this operating practice in short term planning was that the grade consistency from the pit has always been a controversial variable. Schedules were designed to meet grade targets accurately and they were modified immediately when deviations become apparent. This reality led to working with a great deal of independent pushbacks and it required flexibility in the traffic system. The cutoff grade policy has been the same for a long time and the figure was 0.5 %CUT either for sulfide or oxide ore. This was the reason why a balance was produced between the mine and the concentrator. The mine is operated principally with benches of 26 m but in the upper part of the pit there are benches of 24 and 30 m. The main production equipment is shovels of 28 and 34 yd3 along with trucks of 200 and 240 st. Regarding the crushing facilities, there are two main systems located inside the pit and an old one in the periphery, close to a stockpile and near the concentrator. In the north part of the pit there is a crusher for waste material and in the north-east area is located the ore crusher facility. Both restrict a significant area of the pit and the mine sequence is considering to move the ore crusher again to the south-east sector where it used to be located. Relating to the waste crusher, the idea is to move it up to a bench near the surface in order to use the same conveyor belt and, at the same time, liberate an important sector. THE MINE PLANNING PROCESS The objective of the mine planning process is to develop a mine plan for the life of the deposit, in harmony and consistent with the company's goal. It includes the origin and destiny of tonnages and grades from the mine(s), along with the necessary resources to carry out this plan such as: fleet requirement, consumable goods, manpower, etc. From the financial point of view, it means to establish the cash flow for each time period of the mine life. That is. the revenue, capital investment and operating cost associated with each period of the plan. The fundamental principles involved in the mine planning pro- cess have been a controversial issue for a long time. One of the reasons for these divergent views could be produced by the difficulty of modeling a complete extraction policy for a geological re- source. This particular problem has to deal with several decision variables that are time dependent. So far, there is no mathematical formulation for managing such a problem, and the approach to solve it is based on a circular analysis combined with certain heuristic tools. So, a global model rather than a formula, requires a clear understanding of mine operations as well as economic theory and its application to a non-renewable resource. In order to manage this complex problem, the mine planning process can be conveniently split off in three stages which are conceptual, feasibility and operational planning. The characteristics of each stage are basically the timeliness in which they are developed and the kind and number of variables involved. A high seam geologic condition exists at Jim Walter Resources No.4 mine which requires immediate rib support after a continuous miner cuts a place, High seam mining heights are typically 2.4 to 2.6 m (8 to 9 it) and a thick rock layer is present in the upper portion of the coal rib side. The 610 m (2000 ft) mining depth at No. 4 mine induces horizontal rib line movement after excavating an entry. Horizontal rib movement greater than 30.5 cm (12 in) have been noted. When lateral movement occurs in the high seam areas, the thick rock layer, and the coal above the rock layer, become fractured and tend to roll into the entry. If not adequately supported, large rib rolls develop in the place being bolted as well as in previously mined areas which endanger men and equipment. To control this situation rib support must be installed in the roof bolting operation as the bolting crew works towards the face. A rib control system has been developed for this high seam mining condition utilizing a mechanical anchor bolt placed at an angle in the rib and installed with a modified Fletcher DDFI- 15 bolting machine. Over 120 km (75 mi) of entry have been supported with angle rib bolts. These angle bolts constitute 43 to 60% of the total roof and rib bolt footage in the high seam port- ions of No.4 mine. The angle rib bolting system has proven safer, more effective, and more efficient than the earlier support method employing bolts installed horizontally into the rib. No rib roll accidents have occurred since the angle drill bolting machines were placed in service in 1981. By securing the broken rib material with an angle bolt anchored above the coal pillar, a more effective means of rib control is achieved. Angle rib bolting does not interfere with continuous miner productivity. In addition, bolting crews are now reduced from three to two people and the total drilling supply costs are approximately 60% the previous cost, when compared to the previous support method using horizontal rib bolts.

Increased coal production on longwalls has brought with it higher levels of dust generation. Most U.S. longwall mining operators have difficulty complying with Federal dust standards, which are stricter than European standards. Longwall operators faced with a longwall that is "out of compliance" have implemented a variety of practices designed to reduce dust levels. Mining conditions and other important variables, however, can cause fluctuations in dust levels that may overshadow the performance of a new dust control technique. This can result in the continued use of an ineffective technique or lead to the abandonment of an effective dust control technique. No single technique can keep a longwall in compliance. Maintaining compliance requires a fundamental approach to dust control -- proper application and continued use of effective dust control techniques.

Silicon Valley Clean Water signed a progressive-design-build (PDB) contract with Barnard Bessac Joint Venture (BBJV) to design and construct the Gravity Pipeline tunnel in Redwood City, CA. Owner and Design-Builder teamed with designer Arup to provide a final product: 3.3 miles of 182 in. O.D. precast concrete segmentally lined tunnel with 10 ft. and 11 ft. I.D. Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar (FRPM) carrier pipe, complete with two FRPM Drop Structures. The Meikle Mine is located in the northeastern part of Nevada in the gold-rich Carlin Trend. First discovered in 1989, Meikle is being developed into a 2.2-kt/d (2,500-stpd) underground mine that will open during the second half of 1996. Work has already been completed on the mine’s cooling plant, a necessary item due to the high rock temperature and the hot ground water. In North American mines, there has been little need for refrigerated cooling. Therefore, Barrick needed to draw on experience from elsewhere in the world — particularly South Africa — to meet these requirements. The history of cooling mines using mechanical refrigeration dates back to the 1920s at Morro Velho in Brazil and 1936 at Ooregum in India (Dobson,1940 and Biccard, 1946). From 1940 to 1960, several cooling plants were installed on the deep level gold mines on the Witwatersrand in South Africa. These were followed by similar installations on the mines in the Klerksdorp, Welkom, Evander, Rustenburg and Thabazimbi areas. The first mine cooling plant in Germany was built during 1976.
