The reduction process of pre-oxidized ilmenite concentrate powder in 30%CO–70%N2 atmosphere was characterized by thermogravimetric and differential thermogravimetric (TG-DTG) analysis system at the temperature from 1073 to1223 K. The isothermal reduction results show that the reduction process is divided into three stages and the corresponding apparent activation energies are obtained by iso-conversional method and model-fitting method, respectively. For the first stage, the conversion degree increases sharply with increasing time, and the reduction process is controlled by the random nucleation and subsequent growth model (A2 model). For the second stage, the conversion degree increases slowly with increasing time, and the reduction process is controlled by the diffusion of carbon monoxide in the reduced layer (D1 model). For the third stage, the reduction processes at different temperatures are controlled by the diffusion of carbon monoxide in the reduced layer (1073 K and D1 model), phase boundary chemical reaction (1123 K and R2 model), random nucleation and subsequent growth (1173 to 1223 K, A2, and A3 models), respectively. For the whole reduction process, the apparent activation energies obtained by iso-conversional method and model-fitting method are 71.72 and 31.92 kJ mol−1 , respectively

Open-source technology for supporting the Industry 4.0 has become the target of academic research in many sectors. This study reviewed the trends of open-source technology, its forms, and some industrial applications. As a case study using open-source hardware and software for the mining industry, this study proposed a low-cost environmental monitoring system for non-metallic underground mines to support mine safety and occupational health issues. The system was developed using open-source hardware, Arduino and 3D printer, to design the monitoring device. An open-source software, MIT App Inventor, was used for developing an Android application for smartphones to enable remote communication with the system. Field experiments were conducted at an underground tunnel and a non-metallic underground mining site to assess the performance of the system in both mobile and static modes, respectively. Although a few limitations related to the precision of the low-cost dust and gas sensors still exist, the findings of the experiments show that the mining industry can benefit from open-source technology deployment when considering cost factors

Dry separation was the predominant method of coal cleaning in the United States from the 1930s to 1980s. The application peak of dry separators for cleaning raw coal was in 1965, when about 23.1 Mt of cleaned bituminous coal was produced. The main advantage of dry coal cleaning is the elimination RIWKH GHZDWHULQJ VWDJHV DQG VLJQL¿FDQWO\ UHGXFHG moisture in comparison to wet processing. In addition, developed dust control systems have made dry cleaning method an environmentally friendly process. The largest air-based coal cleaning plant was built in Pennsylvania in 1968 and could clean 1,272 t/h of raw coal sized smaller than 19 mm. This was followed by a decline in dry coal cleaning to less than 3.6 Mt in 1988. Large amounts of manganese-rich slag were generated from smelting low-grade manganese ore containing high iron and high phosphorus in electric furnace or blast furnace, which contain 25–40 mass% Mn. This paper describes an efficient hydrometallurgical process for the utilization of high manganese slag instead of conventional usage of pyrometallurgical route for manganese recovery. Pressure acid leaching of manganese-rich slag using air as pressurized gas is studied systematically. The effects of mass ratio of manganese-rich slag to pyrite, concentration of sulfuric acid, leaching temperature, partial air pressure, leaching time, and liquid-solid (L/S) ratio on the separation of manganese with other main impurity components were investigated comprehensively. Under the following optimal process conditions, weight of manganese-rich slag powder,100 g; mass ratio of manganese-rich slag to pyrite, 20:1; sulfuric acid concentration of 140 g/L; air pressure of 0.6 MPa; leaching temperature of 140 °C; leaching time of 1 h; L/S of 7:1; ore size of 75–80 μm; and stirring rate of 600 rpm, the extraction rate of Mn reached 94%, and the dissolution percentage of Si, Al, and Fe are as low as 2%, 6%, and 10%, respectively. The leaching slurry presented a good solid-liquid separation characteristic. The silicic acid formed during sulfuric acid leaching manganese silicates was converted to filterable dehydrated SiO2 particles which precipitated in the residue under the condition of higher temperature with higher pressure. The effect of adding pyrite may be to reduced iron ions and decreased the output of iron hydroxide colloid and also reduced MnO2 to manganese sulfate in sulfuric acid leaching. Thus the formation possibility of colloid such as silica gel and iron hydroxide was decreased, and higher yield of manganese sulfate could be achieved.

SUMMARY A review is presented of the state of development of high pressure water jet equipment and of large impact hammers for rock tunneling. Information from the U.S.S.R. is based on published literature and three personal visits. Applicable papers which were presented at the International Symposium on Jet Cutting Technology in Coventry, England in April 1972 are reviewed. Data are presented on continuous jet systems, pulsed water cannons, and hydraulic-powered impact hammers with respect to the specific energy of rock breakage and potential application in tunneling machines. INTRODUCTION It has been estimated that the cost of underground excavation during the period 1970-1979 in 15 countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development will be over $54 billion, an increase of 104% over the period 1960-1969. It is expected that 55% of the tunneling construction will occur in hard rock (Ref. 1). Present tunneling machines are generally limited to soft and medium-hard rock. When used in hard rock, the cost of replacing mechanical cutter bits is high. INTRODUCTION The design/build (D/B) philosophy of contract delivery is neither new nor unusual when it comes to at-grade, elevated or high-rise structures. But when it comes to constructing underground facilities, there were no examples to be followed in early 90sin the continental United States or its territories. When DMJM+HARRIS was selected as general architectural and engineering consultant for the Tren Urbano (TU) project in Puerto Rico, one of the requirements of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for funding commitment was to use TU as a demonstration project utilizing design/build contract delivery method. Now fifteen years later, New York City Transit (NYCT) has instituted a similar requirement for their first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) contract for the Second Avenue Subway. As with most construction mega-projects, lots of things have happened and there were several lessons learned from the TU experience that are now being applied to Second Avenue. Both of these projects require building tunnels and underground transit facilities in heavily traveled corridors of an urban city, in the vicinity of active business and commercial enterprises. To enhance the challenge, there are noise and vibration sensitive and historic urban receptors either over or along both the transit corridors. Column free Tren Urbano station caverns over18 m (60 ft.) wide were built in soft ground conditions within 3.6 m (12 ft.) of the surface under an aging heavy utility corridor, while NYCT tunnels with station structures stretching the limits of rock caverns to 34.8 m (100 ft.), were planned in rocky geology with the presence of shear and fault zones and some mixed face conditions. BACKGROUND During the early period of design/build experimentation, the speed with which the contract procurement packages could be put together enabled the owners to take advantage of the major efforts underway to rebuild the infrastructure that was suffering from post-World War II neglect. Use of design/build for new starts was unheard of and most of the projects were smaller in nature in order to allow the methodology to be tested. The Shiloh Church deposit is a very significant molybdenum occurrence in an ususual, perhaps unique, geologic environment. Work done to date indicate that several million tons of "ore" may be present, occurring as a matrix in limestone and dolomite breccias. Mineralized rocks cored to date are at or near the surface and the deeper resource potential has not been tested. The prospect is located in Polk County, north- western Georgia (Fig. 1). The "ore zone" was outlined by North American Exploration, Inc. (NAE) using geochemical prospecting techniques. Extensive geological work, including core drilling, has been conducted on the properties, together with geochemical and geophysical surveys. The geology, geochemistry and geophysics of the prospect are discussed. It is hoped that these data can be used to formulate exploration programs in similar terranes located elsewhere in the eastern U.S.A.

Development of a permanent human base on the Moon for exploration requires a self sustaining system. This entails production and processing of limited amounts of raw material on the Moon. Any mining and construction activities on the Moon can only be performed by a robust excavation machine that can excavate a variety of material from loose surface regolith to consolidated (frozen) regolith with embedded rocks in the mixture. Meanwhile, limited amount of information on lunar regolith is available to develop and optimize a machine for given lunar ground conditions. Therefore, any excavator designed for use on the lunar surface should have the ability to adapt to a wide range of operating conditions. A prototype cutterhead for the lunar excavator was built and tested at the Kennametal facility in Latrobe PA A. This paper discusses the results of initial material characterization as well as full scale tests of a prototype cutterhead inrelevent material. A brief review of anticipated production rates under various assumed ground conditions will also be presented.

A ventilation study using tracer gas was conducted at a western US coal mine. The objective of the study was to evaluate the movement of longwall face air exchanges between the face and worked-out area and to document the presence or absence of face airflow pathways between these locations. The mine operator uses a bleederless longwall ventilation system with a back return and a blowing mine ventilation system. The study was conducted on an active panel and included both underground and surface monitoring sites. The study used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) released as a slug on the longwall face and in the front of the gob inby the face. The velocity of the tracer gas movement in the gob was 0.019 m/s (3.7 fpm). The rate of movement for the overall tracer gas slug averaged about 0.0091 m/s (1.8 fpm). A separate tracer gas test initiated with the release of SF6 into the legs of the first shield showed the existence of more than one pathway of face air in the general direction from the headgate towards the tailgate corner. Maintaining adequate ventilation air on longwall faces is important for worker safety and for the dilution of methane emitted from the face and caved gob. A more detailed characterization of longwall system air and gas movement allows a mine to better assess its ventilation design for controlling gas on the face and in the gob.

Construction for the new 2.5 MGPD raw water intake project commenced December 2002. The project, initially designed as a 12' Ø concrete lined intake shaft,145' deep, with two offset 24" lake taps, 520' and 470' long was subsequently “value engineered” running the two lake taps through a single conduit. The offset for summer and winter pools was accomplished via a second shaft located at the lakes edge. Construction involved the use of blind drilling techniques for the shaft development and drill and blast techniques for the tunneling. All works were completed through extremely hard crystallized sandstone. The project came online August 12, 2004.

"Bi- and multilateral banks as well as export credit agencies in the OECD countries, but also numerous commercial banks, last year committed themselves to compliance with the World Bank’s standards. These environmental and social guidelines, also known as the Safeguard Policies, are the strictest international standards in the area of financing of major investment projects. The Safeguard Policies are procedural and quality guidelines by means of which socially and environmentally relevant impacts can be taken into account in the planning and implementation phase of a project. Objectives of the Bank Safeguard Policies are to ensure that environmental and social issues are evaluated in decision-making, to reduce and manage risk of projects and programs, and to provide a mechanism for consultation and disclosure of information. They are often referred to as the "10+1 Safeguard Policies," since ten of the guidelines address environmentally and socially relevant issues, while one guideline is exclusively concerned with public participation ("Public Disclosure"). In the presentation, the transparency of risk management measures and emergency response plans in pipeline projects will be discussed as an indicator of sustainability. The discussion is to be carried out on the basis of the results of an evaluation of several major pipeline projects, which have been financed at least in part by multilateral banks over the past few years. The controversies surrounding some of these projects due environmentally and socially relevant impairments connected with the investments have also been addressed by the Extractive Industry Report of the World Bank. Pipeline construction was the investment type chosen for the examination to be presented here, since pipelines frequently start in remote, unspoiled regions, and their routes often cross various natural zones and areas with various social structures. The question of safety during construction and operation of the line is always central to these projects; not only for the responsible authorities but also for other societal groups involved, such as environmental associations."

NIOSH and the Illinois Clean Coal Institute are funding studies on characterization of coal and quartz dust in Interior Basin mines since 2009. Coal dust characteristics vary significantly and, are vital for the development of the engineering controls. This paper presents wettability characteristics of coal dust with respect to its chemical and physical properties, since wettability is considered to be a primary dust control technique. Particle size distribution, inter-particle interactions during wetting and quartz associations with organic and inorganic matter in coal seams is critical for understanding wetting phenomena. Silica content in the un-wetted fractions was found to be very high during wetting tests. Wetting of quartz may be limited by its association to hydrophobic materials as well as buoyancy forces resulting from particle size characteristics and particle-particle interaction in the wetting agent. Temperature of the wetting solution and effective contact time between dust particles and water droplets are found to be two important variables affecting the wettability. The characterization data obtained from this study can be utilized to develop engineering controls.

Extraction and separation of La, Sm and Dy ions from acidic sulfate-phosphate solutions was investigated using a cation exchange extractant, bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid, CYANEX 272, in kerosene. The influence of shaking time, equilibrium pH, extractant, sulfate and phosphate ion concentrations, diluent type and temperature was studied. The extraction was found to be pH-dependent, and increasing the phosphate ion concentration inhibited the extraction which was found to be endothermic. The stoichiometry of the extracted metal species was found to be MOH.H2OHSO4H2A.A2. Aliphatic diluents were found to enhance the extraction compared to aromatic diluents. The results showed that there was a separation mode between the metal ions when varying the hydrogen ion and sulfate ion concentrations, under the used experimental conditions. The investigated process was used for the recovery of La, Sm and Dy from the acid solution resulting from the leaching of low-grade monazite.

This study investigates the evolution of dimensional properties of grinding products, namely, the mass, the surface area, the length, and the number of particle distributions with the energy input in a ball mill. The size analysis of the mill products enables the calculation of the mass distribution of each material at predetermined size classes and then the determination of the other dimensional properties by taking into consideration the geometry of the particles. Based on the distribution of dimensional properties, an effort was made to determine whether the grinding products are fractal in nature. The effect of material type and grinding conditions on the relationship between the dimensional properties and the specific energy input was also investigated. Special importance was assigned to the study of the specific surface area and the surface area production rate, both during the initial grinding stages and at higher energy levels. The determination of the surface area production rate allows the identification of the grinding limit and the maximum specific surface area which could theoretically be achieved. This approach has as ultimate objective the maximization of energy efficiency and subsequently the minimization of the high grinding cost.

In the last four years, 2007~2010, 9 out of 24 metal/nonmetal underground mine fatalities were caused by ground fall across United States of America (Mine Safety & Health Administration, MSHA). To reduce or eliminate incidents/accidents caused by ground fall, this paper clarified how to design and select ground support based on different ground conditions, how to use mine ground support standards, what geotechnical engineers and underground operators should do to keep mine production free of ground failures.

Guidelines for publication of information defining the amount and grade of resource material available in a deposit are well established in Australasia?s JORC Guidelines, Canada?s National Instrument 43-101 and similar documents in South Africa, Peru, Chile and elsewhere (Table 1). These guidelines provide standards to apply regarding the geologic and geostatistical basis for describing the level of confidence to be assumed for an estimate of the amount and grade of material. All of them provide for a strict distinction between material that has been demonstrated to be economically mineable and that which has not, and all of them provide terms such as ?resource? or ?exploration information? to be applied to data regarding material that has not been demonstrated to be economically mineable. It is not until an economic study has been completed that we are allowed to apply the powerful terms ?reserves? and ?ore? to our deposit material. Indeed, the application of these eye-catching labels immediately tells the reader that an economic study has been completed by a qualified person, and that the results of the study were positive. While extensive guidelines are established for describing the level of confidence in published geologic data, and the nature of the economic study that should be accomplished before using the terms ?reserves? or ?ore?, surprisingly little guidance is provided regarding the process to use, and the level of detail to attain, for estimating capital and operating costs for the study. The intent of this paper is to lay the groundwork for development of suitable guidelines for the cost estimating process. While the codes do not provide specific instructions for the cost estimate, they do provide numerous hints and clues to help determine the level of detail expected and the type of procedure to apply in preparing the estimate. This paper will first review the various codes to gain an insight into the thinking of the drafters of the codes regarding their unstated expectations for the cost estimating process. Based on this review, a series of guidelines are proposed for this purpose.
