A damaged outlet pipe beneath Lenihan Dam has restricted reservoir discharges, severely constraining the owner?s groundwater recharge program. The solution, a new outlet pipeline through the dam?s right abutment, includes an approximately12.2-m-deep (40-ft-deep) shaft and 618.7-m-long, 4.3-m-diameter (2,030-ft long, 14-ft-diameter) tunnel mined in Franciscan melange composed of hard blocks of rock and soft clayey matrix. Alternating road header with drill and blast operations and using steel ribs and shotcrete have proven a flexible combination for handling the variable ground conditions. Excavating the shaft and connecting it to the tunnel require lowering the reservoir for five months, during which time careful construction sequencing and use of a tunnel plug eliminate the risk of an uncontrolled discharge.

Since 2001, CVRD is carrying out a modernization project in it’s pelletizing plant’s automation systems, that comprehends instrumentation, control and information systems. In addition, the project includes implementation of advanced control systems, using artificial intelligence techniques, including fuzzy logic, expert systems and dynamic physical models, to increase production, reduce fuel and energy consumption and improve quality. This paper reports CVRD’s experiences in carrying out an optimization project.

Development of the Batu Hijau Project was successfully completed in the fourth quarter of 1999 with the final handover and start-up of ore processing facilities. The development project had started more than three years earlier, in August 1996, when the Owner, PT. Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT), awarded an EPC contract to Fluor Daniel (FD) for design and construction of the project including: copper concentrator, port, power plant, town site, and infrastructure. PTNNT managed the development of the mine and procurement of mine equipment with its own forces. Bringing the Batu Hijau copper deposit into production was the largest mining project ever undertaken. Development of Batu Hijau was a complex project involving the work of tens of thousands of people in all parts of the world to complete engineering, manufacture and deliver equipment, supply materials, and build the plant. The ore deposit is located on the tropical island of Sumbawa in a remote and undeveloped section of Indonesia. The location and environment presented challenges for all phases and aspects of the project. To meet the challenges, the project team combined good planning and teamwork to best utilize the resources available. This approach assured continuity of personnel through construction to operations and minimized cost, resulting in completion of the project ahead of schedule and under budget.

A study has been conducted to control iron in copper electrolyte streams using Eichrom Industries’s new Monophosphonic /sulphonic acid resin. The resin strongly and selectively extracts ferric ion over copper and cobalt from highly acidic copper electrolytes. The resin has a loading capacity of 27 g/L of iron and can be readily regenerated. In addition, the new resin can be easily synthesized using commercially available starting materials. This paper presents the experimental results for iron control in copper electrolyte streams using the new resin and discusses its potential applications to other hydro-metallurgical streams.

There are three major components of a fully grouted roof bolt which primarily determine its ability to develop and sustain load: the steel rebar, the resin annulus, and the rock/grout interface. The untensioned, fully grouted roof bolt is subjected to loading only when the surrounding rock deforms. Vertical rock deformation is generally a result of strata sagging and bedding plane separation, whereas horizontal deformation is typically a result of bedding plane sliding. These two types of deformation create different types of internal loads with-in the roof bolt, tensile stress for vertical rock deformations and shear stress for horizontal rock deformations. Also, as a result of the mutual load transfer between the rock and bolt, shear stress will be developed along the grout/rock interface. According to the exact bolt loading conditions, different failure modes may occur: bolt axial failure, bolt shear failure, and shear failure along the grout/rock interface. Understanding these possible failure modes and their root causes is the key to eliminating roof failures in underground mines employing fully grouted resin bolts. Using ABAQUS 5.8, a finite element model was developed to simulate the components of the fully grouted bolt and its interaction with the surrounding roof strata. Several models were conducted to investigate how load transfer occurs between the rock and the bolt under different geological and mining conditions. The effects of bed-ding plane location and properties, and strata sequence on bolt stability were studied. Also, the effects of hole roughness on bolt stability were discussed. Bolt axial failure was not observed within the range of the studied parameters; however, a combination of high overburden depth, a bedding plane located at 2 to 3 ft from the roofline or a low coefficient of friction along the bedding plane caused strata sliding and shears failure in the bolt. Also, in the case of a weak immediate roof, the shear stress at the grout/rock interface could exceed its ultimate capacity lead to slippage.

Once the heavy work of mining, supporting and completing an underground structure is finished, there is frequently the problem of handling unwanted water infiltration into the opening. Methods of controlling the infiltration vary from collecting and channelling the inflow to shutting off the water at the surface of the opening or within the ground formation. Discussed are various methods of controlling ground water inflow from within the structure including collector pipe systems, shotcrete, cement grout, bentonite, and various chemical grouts. Case histories illustrating some of the methods and materials will be presented.

Komatsu America has introduced its 2-MW (2,700-hp), 930E-3 ac electric drive truck with a 290-t(320-st) capacity. The truck is designed to provide increased productivity, lower cost per ton hauled and improved speed and control. The 930E-3 is powered by a Komatsu SSDA16Vl6016-cylinder engine. It is capable of speeds up to 65 km/h(40 mph) and is a 15-percent to 20-percent more productive unit than 218-t (240-st) trucks, at a lower operating cost per ton. The 930E-3 also provides enough torque and speed to get up and off ramps easier than mechanically driven trucks. And it can climb at altitudes up to 3,650 m(12,000 ft) without any fuel deration.

In the flotation of Zn-Pb ores, sphalerite is floated following copper sulfide activation. In this type of sulfide ore, pyrite is commonly treated as a gangue, and poor selectivity between sphalerite and pyrite/quartz is often reported. But pyrite may also appear in association with gold, and flotation of such auriferous sulfides is of great importance in many countries (e.g. South Africa, Australia). In the cationic flotation of sulfide ores with dodecyl amine, sphalerite can be floated while depressing quartz and pyrite. While in a well-aerated pulp in the presence of lime (especially after oxidation with H2O2) the cationic flotation of pyrite is depressed, oxidation of pyrite in the presence of Na2S makes it floatable with amines even in very alkaline environment.

The Apex Tunnel is part of the Southern Nevada Water Authority?s proposed Clark, Lincoln, and White Pine Counties Groundwater Development Project. The project is intended to develop unused Nevada groundwater for meeting the water needs of Southern Nevada and would involve over 322 km (200 mi) of water transmission facilities. The Apex Tunnel, as currently conceived by ongoing planning and environmental analyses, would extend 2804 m (9,200 ft) through a structurally complex terrain of Paleozoic carbonate rocks and younger basin fill deposits and will traverse both public and private lands. Several faults cross the tunnel study area, juxtaposing rocks of varying lithology and degree of folding, and creating intervals of differing rock conditions along the tunnel alignment. This paper discusses how the geotechnical program was developed to be flexible and allow for rapid implementation of revisions based on new knowledge that became available during program execution, resulting in more effective decision making and enhanced value from the geologic investigation during the planning phase of the project.

Many subsidence researchers in the U. S. have developed new empirical function methods to predict subsidence, or attempted to validate some empirical functions developed by foreign researchers for use in the U. S. An attempt is made in this paper to develop a new empirical function to predict a surface subsidence basin due to longwall mining. In the U. S., the emphasis of empirical methods for the subsidence prediction over longwall panels has been in large part on determining the profile functions for the major cross-sections of a subsidence basin. In this approach, the surface monuments are usually laid out along the major cross-sections and thus, the subsidence profiles developed are restricted for subsidence prediction along the major cross-sections. However in practice many monuments or surface structures for which subsidence prediction for damage evaluation is required, are not laid out along the major cross-section of the basin. In such cases, it is difficult to get either the empirical profile function for the cross-sections where these structures are located or to predict their subsidence based on the profile function developed for the major cross-sections. Therefore, there exists a strong need to develop a subsidence basin function with a reasonable degree of accuracy, which can be determined or confirmed by the data of scattered monuments on a surface basin. The same subsidence basin function can also be used for prediction of subsidence for any arbitrary points over a longwall panel. In 1982, He (1) proposed the clastic theory, for which he developed the basic differential equations describing the movement and deformation of overburden due to underground mining, and performed the selection of best solution for the equations. He found that the Weibull dietribution is the optimal solution. The Weibull distribution has three parameters that vary to fit the subsidence profile so well that the profile function derived from it provides a high degree of accuracy in subeidence prediction. Ilmenite smelting furnaces must be operated with a freeze lining of frozen slag to protect sidewall refractories from chemical attack by liquid slag. The process has two main control objectives: Firstly the slag TiO2 content must be controlled according to specification, and secondly a safe freeze lining thickness must be maintained. This text only concerns itself with the second objective. Freeze lining thickness cannot be measured directly due to conditions inside the furnace. It is therefore inferred from signals of thermocouples installed into the furnace sidewall. These signals are used as the 'controlled variables' in the freeze lining thickness control loop. The dynamic characteristics of these signals are the focus of this text. During this study a model of the process was constructed to study interactions between the slag bath and the freeze lining. This model was used to conduct simulation-type experiments to study the influence of various parameters (temperature, slag composition, ilmenite feed rate, reductant feed rate, power input, etc.) on the slag bath, freeze lining, metal bath, furnace wall and other parts of the process. In the case of the furnace wall, the modelling results were first plotted in the form of time-dependent isotherms. The dynamic thermal behavior of the furnace wall became evident from these results. To illustrate the dynamics of sidewall thermocouple signals, the results were also plotted as time lags between events occurring in the slag bath, and the time when a thermocouple registered a temperature change. The events studied included sudden changes in slag bath state (composition and temperature), changes in operating setpoints (ilmenite feed rate, reductant feed rate, power input), and operational errors (complete loss of reductant or of all feed). All of the result sets showed significant lags between occurrences in the slag bath and temperature changes in the refractory wall. The delays are such that it appears impractical to rely on sidewall thermocouple signals for warning of impending damage to the refractory wall, or for purposes of actively controlling freeze lining thickness. Some measures are suggested to improve the usefulness of these signals during furnace operation.

Unmineable coal seams present an opportunity to sequester carbon dioxide emissions from power plants, while enhancing the recovery of coalbed methane. Injected carbon dioxide is adsorbed and stored on the coal surface while releasing methane that can be commercially recovered. Carbon sequestration, therefore, allows the utilization of unexploited mineral resources while reducing “greenhouse” gas emissions. This paper presents the feasibility, efficiency and enhanced recovery potential of coalbed methane production using carbon dioxide sequestration in the Central Appalachian Basin. The focus of research is on geological characterization of unmineable coal seams in Central Appalachia and the corresponding carbon dioxide storage capacity. Virginia Tech and Marshall Miller & Associates, Inc. conducted this research under the Department of Energy’s Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership program.

Tunnel boring machines continue to develop to take on not only larger and larger diameters but also more difficult ground conditions. Ground conditions consisting of unstable faces with water pressures up to 15 bar has required innovative design approaches. A systems approach has been required to produce tunnelling machines that can not only safely excavate the tunnel but do so in an efficient, cost effective manner that stresses production and labor saving approaches. This paper will review the current design developments and present recent projects where these most recent principles have been applied.

The U.S. Geological Survey has conducted an assessment of the Nation’s coal deposits that potentially could be mined during the next 30 or more years. For the Gulf Coastal Plain region, the assessment includes reviews of the stratigraphy, coal quality and resources, and coalbed methane potential of the Cretaceous, Paleocene, and Eocene coal deposits in the region. The results of these efforts are a series of digital maps, text, and tables published in CD-ROM format. Although abundant coal resources are available in the Gulf Coast region, coal quality issues may limit large-scale development in the future. Additional data are required to better evaluate the coalbed methane resource potential for the Gulf Coast region.

In the wake of the collapse of the ceiling panels in the I-90 section of the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) Project in 2006, the long term performance of tunnels became the focus of the tunneling industry. At the time of the accident, the tunnel had been open to traffic for about 10 years. This paper will discuss design methods and considerations to improve the long term performance and durability of a tunnel. The major problems found during the inspection of several tunnels will also be presented and the causes for these problems will be discussed.

Extraction of Al(III) from aqueous sulfuric acid solutions into organic Cyanex 272®-carbon tetrachloride systems was investigated from a multi-component mixture containing aluminum, cobalt and nickel. Al(III) extraction efficiency was quantitative with 1.0 M Cyanex 272® in two stages at an aqueous: organic (A:O) phase ratio of 1:1 and an equilibrium pH of 3.2. The stripping of Al(III) from the loaded organic (LO) with different acids indicated sulfuric acid to be the best stripping agent. More than 99% stripping of Al(III) from the LO was achieved using 2 M H2SO4 at an A:O phase ratio of 1:1 in a single stage. The stoichiometry of the extracted species of Al(III) was determined by the slope analysis method. The extraction reaction proceeded via the cation exchange mechanism and the extracted species was assumed to be AlA3?3HA, where HA refers to the dimeric and A the anionic form of the extractant, Cyanex 272®. The extraction of Al(III) was studied in the presence of various ions to ascertain the tolerance limit of individual ions.

Analytical and computer models are used to evaluate information obtained from existing data and investigation programs so mine water control systems can be designed and developed. These models allow the geohydrologist to predict the amount of groundwater inflow and the impact of dewatering and stream diversion on the hydrologic regime, and to determine the schedule and equipment needed for mine dewatering. This article describes uses of the model and the essential components necessary to construct an effective and practical one. Hydrologic models are constructed to determine the extent that mining activities will affect the ground water and surface water hydrologic regime. These models range from basic analytical, mathematical models to the more sophisticated finite difference and finite element groundwater models. Many factors determine the degree of sophistication, including the mining stage, the complexity of the hydrologic regime, the mining process, and regulatory requirements. Model Uses The geohydrologist and engineer construct models so the entire ground and surface water handling and supply system can be integrated and optimized. These models can provide the following data: • Information for water balance studies-the entire hydrologic regime for the area, including precipitation, transpiration, evaporation, infiltration, runoff, and the effect of geologic features. • Data on seepage rates during mining. • Information to design the depressurization and dewatering system, including water well spacing, location of sumping systems, need for grout curtains, and possible horizontal drain and underdrain locations. • Data needed to schedule dewatering and mining operations. • Prediction of initial and long-term impacts of mining and dewatering, including local and areal drawdowns, effects on existing wells, and modifications to the surface-subsurface hydrologic regime. Potentiometric surface maps and hydrographs can be prepared from these data. • Prediction of the effect of discharge from the water control system on the surface hydrology and data input to design systems for water discharge, storage, recharge, or reinjection. The results of a computer study that illustrates the effect of dewatering and reinjection into an aquifer to confine the cone of depression are shown on the accompanying figure. • Information to forecast potentiometric surface recovery after mining ceases. The accompanying figure shows the pumping and reinjection rates in a program that is adequate to dewater a mine and permit the recovery of potentiometric levels to approximate premining levels after mining ceases. • Documentation and design information for monitoring systems to be installed during all mining phases. • Water quality predictions and geochemical changes, including the possibility of brackish or saline water intrusion because of extensive dewatering or depressurization operations. • Documentation and data for acquiring permits from regulatory agencies. Model Input Program For any model to be effective, detailed hydrologic and geologic data must be gathered from a review of existing information and from an investigative program. These data should cover entire model limits. Data updating, revising, and refining should occur as new information is received from the investigation and monitoring programs, and from the mining operation as it progresses through the pre-mining, mining, post-mining, and reclamation

Many appraisers/valuers believe that the only valuation method available within the Cost Approach category for Real Property appraisal is the depreciated replacement cost method. Some valuation and financial reporting standards setters also believe the same. This paper introduces the minerals appraiser to a number of useful methods for mineral property appraisal that are based primarily on the principle of contribution to value, the predominant economic principle in the cost approach. Most of these cost approach methods discussed are primarily for use in valuation of exploration tracts and resource properties that have no defined reserves. However, the powerful rural cost method can be used to calculate the contribution of categories of resources, reserves, and other property components to the value of a mineral property. This method can be applied to mineral properties at all stages of development, including producing properties.
