Outcrop barrier pillars serve to keep mine personnel and the public safe from sudden uncontrolled flows of water accumulated in active and abandoned underground mine workings. When an outcrop barrier fails, the result is an outbreak of water to the surface and is termed as blowout. Mine blowouts are associated with above-drainage mines and can occur through the coal outcrop and sealed portals. A blowout is often catastrophic, a threat to the people on the surface living or working in the path of a potentially large flood. In addition, blowouts can destroy homes, cause landslides and severe erosion and release pollution and acid mine drainage. This paper provides guidance on the planning, design, evaluation and inspection of barriers to address the problem of mine blowouts associated with above-drainage coal mines.

"As the bulk handling sector continues its transformation to Industry 4.0, the mining industry, and its harsh working and environmental conditions, provides a perfect spot to study the feasibility of remote analysis and maintenance of the components used for bulk handling. The most important and expensive tools have been adapted to the digital era in recent years, from remotely controlled haul trucks to monitored conveyor belts.However, the big items of the installations rely on smaller parts that have been leftaside, mainly due to the difficultyof adapting them to the Internet ofThings (IoT).The paradigmatic example is the lack of monitored rollers, while all the other components of the conveyorbelt installations (the belt itself, motors, drums, etc.) were monitored some time ago. The main problem is that a failure of a single roller can cause the stoppage of the entire conveyor, due to possible damage to the belt. Thus, the implementation of an integral monitoring system of all the components of the conveyor is a must.The research and development department of ULMA Conveyor Components has been working since early 2012 on the development of monitored rollers, testing all the problems until their final installation in different demanding conditions, from the extreme heat in Australia to the freezing cold of Norway. All the tests have been done under actual working conditions, in real installations and have provided valuable knowledge in the identification of problems, their solutions and the final advantages of a roller monitoring system.Background and current stateThe malfunction of a single roller in certain conveyor belts can force the standstill of the entire installation until its replacement, due to the risk of greater and more expensive failures, such as a rip in the belt. In the case of a bulk handling installation, where a continuous supply of material is necessary, an unexpected stop of one hour could result in huge economic losses."

Changes and the pace of change in China’s coal industry have been extraordinary during the past several years. At least 35 of the 94 former coal bureaus have been restructured into different mining companies and groups. Some of the more productive and efficient ones were further strengthened through consolidation and expansions. And several have even formed, or are in the process of forming, strategic alliances with utility companies, railroads, ports and chemical companies to secure additional reserves and coal sales. In addition, the improvement in coal pricing during the past two years has enabled China’s coal industry to move ahead with some needed changes. Coal mining accidents, though, remain a major concern for the Chinese government. Accidents remain high even though the government has made efforts to shutdown more than 55,000 unlicensed, unsafe small coal operations throughout the country.

Underground heat issues are mainly focused on the detrimental effects to a workers health. However, working in hot, humid conditions has other negative effects. Studies have shown that safety, productivity, workforce morale and operating cost are also worsened in these conditions. The human body has several mechanisms for rejecting heat and remaining cool. However, once the air temperature exceeds about 34°C, the only effective mechanism is by evaporation of sweat from the skin. This is assisted by acclimatisation which is the human body?s enhanced ability to combat extended exposure to heat. The body has to remain well hydrated when working in heat as even small degrees of dehydration cause significant decreases in the ability to work in heat. There are two ways in which heat load can be reduced: Through use of refrigeration/vent/cooling to reduce thermal stress on workers; Reduce the contribution that heat sources have to underground heat load (e.g. reduce idle time, fleet size, etc). Some of the sources of underground heat have the potential to be more manageable than others. Geothermal heat and heat from autocompression will be found in all mining situations in varying degrees depending on geothermal gradient and surface temperature, however, the use of equipment and blasting may be streamlined to reduce the underground heat load. It is through a combination of the available options that most mines will successfully control their heat related problems. Mt Isa, which has been a focus for heat related study in Australia, has successfully implemented protocols for working in heat. Through combining these with the installation of a surface bulk air cooling plant, Mt Isa has consistently reduced the incidence of heat illness. This is likely to be the most cost effective method of reducing heat load for deep mines in Australia. Shallower mines which may only occasionally encounter hot conditions should consider more portable cooling options. This study will review the heat issues in underground Australian metalliferous mines.

MSHA has promulgated a rule to limit the exposure of underground metal/nonmetal miners to diesel particulate matter (DPM). In May 2008, the final personal exposure limit will be lowered to 160 µg/m3 total carbon. To comply with this rule, mine operators are implementing a variety of control technologies. In this study two types of control technologies (ventilation and cabs) which are being implemented in limestone mines were investigated. Two stone mines in this study use large diameter propeller fans for main mine ventilation and direct the air to the faces using auxiliary fans, stoppings, and long pillars while bypassing the old mine workings. NIOSH measured for sub-micrometer elemental carbon (EC) using SKC DPM cassettes (analyzed using NIOSH 5040) and a near real time instrument. With the present ventilation and the number and type of vehicles used, the concentration of EC from DPM at the working areas was at or below 400 µg/m3 for both mines and about 166 µg/m3 and 251 µg/m3 at the returns. The real time data showed that the ventilation was reaching the working areas and effectively diluting the DPM. Environmental cabs were also used to reduce DPM exposures in three underground limestone mines. Using NIOSH method 5040 and near real time EC instrumentation, NIOSH sampled inside and outside of a loader cab at one of these limestone mines to determine the effectiveness of the cab. The cab was found to be over 90% effective in removing DPM as long as the cab system was properly maintained, and doors and windows were closed.

An aggregate plant may have difficulty balancing product stockpile inventories if hot mix asphalt (HMA) design engineers do not account for aggregate inventory during mix design. Yet HMA design engineers do not, often, take this into consideration during asphalt mix design. This is due to the lack of tools that enable the lab technician or engineer to optimize the mix for good performance while helping the aggregate plant manage its stockpile inventory levels and reducing the aggregate cost. This work presents a linear programming model of the asphalt mix design problem that helps aggregate plants manage their inventory levels while meeting HMA customer demands. The algorithm is implemented in MATLAB as an Asphalt Mix Design Optimization (AMIDO) program. The program is successfully validated with real-life data. The results show that AMIDO can be used to successfully produce any mix design while reducing the cost of aggregates by using the cheapest stockpile materials. The application of AMIDO will increase aggregate plant profitability when serving HMA customers and could potentially be modified for concrete aggregate customers too.

The link between artificial ground freezing and the mining industry stretches back more than 140 years, and across an ocean. Patented by the German scientist F.H. Poetsch in 1863, the technique is reported to have first been used circa 1862 in the coal mining valleys of South Wales. In the United States, the first ground freezing application, to a depth of 30 m (100 ft), occurred in 1888 for the Chapin Mine Co. in Iron Mountain, MO. In England in 1901, the Poetsch method was used for the first time to successfully sink two shafts through 24 to 27 m (80 to 90 ft) of wet sand and boulder clay at the Washington Glebe Colliery, near Sunderland. British mining engineer T.H. Cockin, in his 1905 Class-Book of Practical Coal-Mining, noted that, ?This method of sinking through thick beds of very wet quicksand has met with great success; it is one of the recognized methods of sinking on the Continent.? Mine shaft freezing soon became relatively common in Europe where the project could bear the cost of a major refrigeration plant construction. However, it was not until 1952 that the second North American ground freezing project was completed to facilitate the sinking of a 4.5-m- (15-ft-) diameter, 233-m- (765-ft-) deep shaft at a Potash Company of America (PCA) mine in Carlsbad, NM. Nowadays, ground freezing is used worldwide for both mining and civil applications. In small mine shafts of 3 to 6 m (10 to 20 ft) in diameter, excavations have been carried out to depths of more than 820 m (2,700 ft) within the protection of unbraced or unlined frozen walls. In fact, for deep mines, no better method has yet been established for sinking production shafts through deep, water-bearing ground. Major deposits of coal, potash and salt would still be inaccessible if not for artificial ground freezing. There are several advantages of ground freezing unique to the construction of shafts. Proper instrumentation can provide complete assurance of the integrity of the freeze to full depth prior to excavation. The frozen wall allows construction to be scheduled without evaluating the in-shaft time necessary to probe ahead, place additional sup-ports or deal with ground water. The freeze can be implemented perfectly through the soil/rock interface, which is often the most difficult geology in which to create a ground water cutoff by other methods. Super Cycle future The final topic is mining?s future. The most important questions are ?How much longer is the Super Cycle going to last? What should we expect to see going forward? How will the Super Cycle end?? Three possible scenarios follow. Scenario one: Super Cycle has peaked Kathy Casey-Kirschling is officially the first Baby Boomer. She was born Jan. 1st, 1946. If you google ?first baby boomer,? she?s the one that shows up. A Baby Boomer is anybody born between 1946 and 1964. In the United States, it represents about a quarter of the population ? approximately 76 million people. The Baby Boomer generation is going to change the economics of the world because there are so many in the generation. A review of spending patterns indicates that the largest amount of discretionary spending occurs between the ages of 49 and 52. Retired people tend to live on fixed incomes so they have less discretionary income. They also tend to downsize their house, which may contribute to the housing glut and the need for a lot less metal. Therefore, the upcoming retirement of the Baby Boomer generation could result in a massive shift in economic spending resulting in the peaking of the Super Cycle. Figure 1 is an index graph from the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX). The index has recently peaked. A lot of people see that as a sign that bad things coming our way. A careful review of different commodity prices also suggest that the peak has occurred and it does not seem to matter which commodity prices are considered. Copper prices have seen a peak as have nickel prices. Nickel and molybdenum displayed the same trend with a peak in 2005 as did zinc. Uranium, which has single-handedly tried to behave like the dot com craze, has also peaked.

Bulkheads, also known as hydraulic seals, are used to seal abandoned workings and protect adjacent active mines from explosion and control unwanted inflows of water from poorly sealed shafts, water-bearing strata, and abandoned mine areas or gobs (1). At coal seam outcrops, bulkheads have typically been used to prevent access and to control acid mine drainage. Bulkheads have also been installed at outcrop openings located within the footprint of an embankment dam, or within the reservoir of an impoundment, to prevent stored water or slurry waste from flowing into active or inactive underground mine workings (2). Components of MICON Bulkhead Seal MICON bulkhead seals in mining applications refer to seals designed to impound liquids or slurry. The MICON bulkhead seal is comprised of two concrete block walls set in the front and back and a polyurethane/aggregate core (Figure 1). The two walls are usually dry-stacked, surface-bonded walls constructed with solid load-bearing concrete blocks (ASTM C90) or concrete building brick (ASTM C55). The surface bonding material used in the wall construction must be MSHA-approved. The type of stone, if any, used to fill the space between the walls is not essential. However, MICON generally uses No. 57 limestone in 50 lb. bags, specified to moisture control, shrink-wrapped and palletized. The polyurethane foam used in the construction of the bulkhead seal is engineering specified and formulated by density based on the optimization of cost, seal core thickness, required adhesive strength, the use of stone filler and other required physical properties.

The extraction of lignite in open-cast mines has a severe impact on the landscape. Proper landscaping after the shut-down of the mines has always been the statutory responsibility of the mine operator. The large area of the land used for open-cast lignite mining requires special regional planning procedures well in advance of the permitting procedure stipulated in the mining law. The lignite plan determines, among other things, the objectives of land reclamation. These objectives will then be outlined in more detail in the mine operation plans and implemented accordingly. Apart from the actual mining laws and regulations, a large number of environmental laws also determine the process of land reclamation. The success achieved in the field of land reclamation in all mining regions during the recent decades has shown that the lignite mining industry creates new landscapes that do not leave any scars in the countryside and merge very well with it.

The Joint Water Pollution Control Plant, operated by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, treats wastewater generated by over three million people. A new tunnel and ocean outfall is being considered to meet future hydraulic demands and provide long-term redundancy for the Districts? existing tunnels, portions of which were constructed as early as the 1930s. The detailed process used to evaluate the feasibility of various tunnel and out-fall locations is described. Challenges include a geologic profile with mixed face and squeezing ground conditions; high water pressures; active fault crossings; gassy and contaminated ground conditions; and liquefaction, slope stability, and lateral spreading concerns in the area of the riser and diffusers.

"Since being reported to the 2012 UMI in Shanghai, the Cook Islands has been steadily developing for the commencement of it Seabed Minerals sector in its large Exclusive Economic Zone which contain a vast and unique Manganese Nodule resource, estimated at 10 billion tonnes1. At the 2013 UMI in Brazil, it was reported that the Seabed Minerals Act had commenced and all the necessary complex Technical aspects of this developmental work was being undertaken. At the 2014 UMI in Portugal, full details of the final developments leading to the opening of the Tender of Exploration Blocks in the Cook Islands EEZ will be presented in a brief but comprehensive method, using Poster displays, Powerpoint and active Website interaction. This will show the drafted Regulations, prepared on best international standards, to address both Licencing and Environmental requirements, to give clarity and security to the Resources Owner, industry and stakeholders. This work in being coordinated by the Cook Islands Seabed Minerals Authority, with the valuable collaboration of many international, regional and national stakeholders, including the Cook Islands NGOs, Marine Resources, Marine Park and National Environment Service."

Physical and chemical conditions permitting, in-situ leaching (ISL) of uranium offers a variety of advantages over conventional production methods including less surface disturbance and less solid waste. Commercial production of uranium by in-situ leaching techniques was initiated in 1963 in the Shirley Basin of Wyoming by Utah Construction. On a world-wide basis, ISL uranium production amounted to about 13.2 million pounds U3O8 in1999, approximately 16% of world output. Both acid and alkaline systems are used, the selection of which is primarily dependent upon groundwater quality and related reclamation requirements. ISL offers low capital costs per unit of annual capacity and is particularly flexible in adapting to changing market conditions.

In 1994, the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) commenced a system-wide Seismic Improvement Program to protect their facilities from catastrophic damage. A primary focus of this program has been on retrofitting the 75-year old Claremont Tunnel, which crosses the active Hayward Fault zone. A large earthquake on the Hayward Fault could generate enough right-lateral fault slip to effectively sever this important lifeline. The retrofit project involves construction of a new bypass tunnel through the Hayward Fault zone, together with systematic contact grouting and localized structural repair of the existing concrete liner. Several innovative design measures have been incorporated into the seismic retrofit design, including an oversized tunnel cross section, backfill concrete side drifts, seismic isolation of an internal structural pipe, and shear fuses in the final lining.

Large amounts of limestone fines coproduced during the processing of crushed limestone may be useful in the sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2). Accelerated weathering of limestone (AWL) is proposed as a low-tech method to capture and sequester CO2 from fossil fuel-fired power plants and other point-sources such as cement manufacturing. AWL reactants are readily available, inexpensive, and environmentally benign. Waste CO2 is hydrated with water to produce carbonic acid, which then reacts with and is neutralized by limestone fines, thus converting CO2 gas to dissolved calcium bicarbonate. AWL waste products can be disposed of in the ocean. Feasibility requires access to an inexpensive source of limestone and to seawater, thus limiting AWL facilities within about 10 km of the coastline. The majority of U.S. coastal power generating facilities are within economical transport distance of limestone resources. AWL presents opportunities for collaborative efforts among the crushed stone industry, electrical utilities, cement manufactures, and research scientists.

This paper discusses the process utilized by the Kiewit?Bilfiger Berger Joint Venture (Contractor) to select, design, and procure the largest mixshield tunnel boring machine (TBM) ever implemented in North America. The mixshield will excavate the 8,534 linear m × 6.7 m ID (28,000 linear ft × 22 ft ID) tunnel for the City of Portland Oregon?s, Bureau of Environmental Services (Owner) East Side CSO Tunnel Project. TBM selection was conducted under a preconstruction contract in which the Contractor, Owner, Construction Management Consultant and Designer collaborated on TBM selection prior to commencement of construction. This paper describes the design and construction of a 22.86 m (75 ft) long jacked tunnel, which was successfully installed, despite difficult mixed face conditions at Metro-North’s Westport Station, in Connecticut in the fall of 2003. The tunnel utilized what is believed to be, the first application of a steel grillage system within the United States. This grillage was installed before the jacking started and allowed the tunnel to be jacked under four live railway tracks, which included the Acela high speed line, without affecting train operations. The clearance between the top of the tunnel and the rails was only 0.9 m (3 ft).

Dump truck operators are exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV) levels that exceed the International Standard Organization (ISO) 2631-1. The WBV level measured by RMS acceleration value, for operator comfort, and long-term health and safety is under 0.315 m/s2 by these standards. However, fundamental research by Frimpong and Aouad (2009, 2012) and field experimental study by Kumar (1999) have shown that operators are exposed to extreme WBV levels exposing them to injuries and musculoskeletal diseases in the long-term. These extreme WBV values in the vertical direction are equal to 3.56 m/s2, 1.12 m/s2 and 0.87 m/s2 for the operator?s seat, lower-back and cervical regions, respectively. Coupled influence of sulphidizers and xanthates on the electrokinetic property and flotation behavior of malachite was systematically examined via electrophoretic mobility measurements and microflotation tests. The electrophoretic mobility results for the malachite before and after surface modification with different types (Na2S and (NH4)2S) and amounts (1×10-7?1×10-4 moles/g) of sulphidizers, showed that the isoelectric points (IEP) of malachite differed at the low dosage level depending on the type of the sulphidizer, which ranged between 5 and 9.5. However, the IEP values were observed to be shifted from high to low pH values with increasing amount of sulphidizers and finally ranged between 3 and 4, indicating that the sulphidizers played a different role on changing the surface property of malachite. In order to further understand the effect of sulphidizers on the electrokinetic property and flotation behavior of malachite in a sulphidizer+xanthate system, flotation tests were carried out with malachite sulphidized with Na2S and (NH4)2S (adsorptive amount=8×10-5 moles/g) at different bulk xanthate concentrations. The results showed that the flotability of (NH4)2S-treated malachite was greater than Na2S-treated one over the entire xanthate concentration investigated, indicating that the type of sulphidizers played important role in malachite flotation; however, no obvious correlation between electrokinetic property and flotability of malachite was observed.
