D.A. Dahlstrom In the paper, a comparison was made between flowsheets using the screen bowl centrifuge and disc filters, respectively, as the primary dewatering device. The authors very effectively show that by raising feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced through reduced viscosity of the water. When a final coal moisture of 10% is required, the net effect of heating the feed is a reduction in thermal requirements because of the lower evaporated load on the dryer. The flowsheet comparison on this, however, was not completely correct. Disc filters do not generally utilize enhanced mechanical dewatering through increased temperature. Horizontal belt filters, through the optimal use of steam heating of the filter cake, have shown significant cost reductions over disc filters where steam is not used. In addition, the authors forgot to mention that there is a certain fraction of the feed that is so fine that it cannot be recovered by the centrifuge economically. That is the function of the filtration device shown in Fig. 4. In subbituminous pipeline coals, this fraction represents more than 10% of the feed. Even after flocculation and belt pressing, the moisture content in the fine fraction is 30%-40. Recent tests on a subbituminous pipeline coal slurry, compared an Eimco-Extractor horizontal belt filter with the screen bowl centrifuge flowsheet shown in Fig. 4. Mechanical dewatering was enhanced through the use of a steam dry zone after the initial dewatering zone. Vacuum pump horsepower was reduced by more than 50% through the use of condensors, and heat recovery was utilized to minimize thermal costs. Thermal drying to 10% moisture by weight was required in both flowsheets. The 0.5 wt% fines in the filtrate were flocculated and recycled to the filter, thus eliminating the belt press and solids mixers. When the three major operating costs (which normally account for 50%-75% of the coal operating costs) of steam, electricity, and flocculants at current prices were calculated, the flowsheets utilizing the Eimco-Extractor had cost savings vs the centrifuge flowsheet of 89¢/t (81o; per st) of surface dry coal. This advantage increases with increasing thermal and electricity prices. I congratulate the authors for the strides made with the screen bowl centrifuge. However, filtration flowsheets continue to be improved and their simplicity and low thermal and electrical requirements should not be so quickly dismissed. ? Reply by N.D. Policow From a technical standpoint, a number of extensive test programs have demonstrated that by raising the feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced whether it be centrifuges or filters performing the separation. Economic constraints usually become the over-riding issue. If an inexpensive source of thermal energy is available, i.e., waste steam, etc., the approach becomes commercially acceptable. For the specific case of coal slurry pipelines, since the dewatering plants will be located close to power generation stations, the preheating approach becomes especially attractive. The cost comparison shown in Fig. 7, which was prepared by a major West Coast engineering firm, contrasted screen bowl centrifuges and disc filters. In both alternatives, a thermal dryer was specified to produce a contract moisture of the final product. Sizing of the thermal dryer on the screen bowl alternative was substantially smaller than that of the filter, since the screen bowl was credited with a four to six percentage point decrease in product moisture compared to the disc. This comparison was made at ambient temperatures and reflected solely the mechanical dewatering capabilities of the two devices. No preheating of the feed was included in this particular comparison. Early generation screen bowl centrifuges operated under the principle of maximum bulk tonnage throughput. Second and third generation machines have followed the trends dictated by the coal industry calling for higher one-pass recoveries than previously demanded. The current generation of high-speed, long-bowl centrifuges permit recoveries of ultrafine solids directly comparable to commercial filter operation. On typical coal preparation plant feeds with nominal 600 E. an X 0 (28 mesh X 0) clean coal, recovery levels in excess of 99% are now obtained. The material that does escape the centrifuge and reports to the main effluent is typically -10 µm, high ash material. We have documented substantial beneficiation effects in screen bowl centrifuge performance with the cake product containing lower ash levels than the feed. On the referenced pipeline, coal tests performed on Western subbituminous coal, we found that the percentage of -10 µm material in the feed was six to eight times greater than normally encountered on eastern Appalachian seams. Our 45-t/h (50-stph) production centrifuge was never set up to maximize recovery. It was used as part of the two-stage dewatering circuit that had been chosen by designers of the proposed pipeline. Recoveries up to 95% were recorded. With field adjustments, that performance could most certainly have been improved. In contrast, manufacturers of the horizontal belt filter provided a small pilot-scale unit that operated on a side stream at the test facility. Numerous combinations of chemical additions were evaluated to determine those that had the best impact on filter performance. Whereas the screen bowl centrifuges operated without chemical addition, producing a dry, fluffy cake, the belt filter required two stages of chemical addition to attain satisfactory performance and high recovery levels. Video technology coupled with data logging exposure monitors have been used to evaluate worker exposure to different types of contaminants. However, previous application of this technology used a stationary video camera to record the worker?s activity while the worker wore some type of contaminant monitor. These techniques are not applicable to mobile workers in the mining industry because of their need to move around the operation while performing their duties and tasks. The Helmet-CAM is a recently developed exposure assessment tool that integrates a person-wearable video recorder with a data logging dust monitor that are worn by a miner in a backpack, safety belt, or safety vest to identify areas or job tasks of elevated exposure. After a miner performs his or her job while wearing the unit, the video and dust exposure data files are downloaded to a computer and then merged together through a NIOSH-developed computer software program called EVADE (Enhanced Video Analysis of Dust Exposure). By providing synchronized playback of the merged video footage and dust exposure data, the EVADE software allows for the assessment and identification of key work areas and processes, as well as work tasks that significantly impact a worker?s personal respirable dust exposure. The Helmet-CAM technology has been tested at a number of metal/nonmetal mining operations and has proven to be a very valuable assessment tool. Mining companies wishing to use this technique can purchase a commercially available video camera and an instantaneous dust monitor to obtain the necessary data, and the NIOSH-developed EVADE software will be available for download at no cost on the NIOSH website.

These preceding factors, coupled with the in-house retention of a core project group that fully understands the breadth of skills and abilities needed to undertake development of multiple large projects successfully, have been the cornerstone of Cyprus Amax’s project development success.

For many years, Newmont has focused on improving its operations. After the merger between Newmont and Santa Fe Pacific Gold, Newmont created synergies of more than $50 million a year in Nevada. This was done primarily through optimal ore movements and consolidation of various functions. During the current period of low gold and copper prices, Newmont has refocused its efforts on efficient operations worldwide. At its mine facilities in Nevada, Newmont has used a combination of several strategies to decrease the costs of operations and to increase profitability. These include computer technology, optimal use of infrastructures, procurement strategies, functional consolidation, enhanced mine planning and several available metallurgical processing options.

The reliability of a set of flotation results is key to minimizing project risk either at concentrator commissioning, or at the point of implementing an improvement to an existing concentrator operation. High-Confidence Flotation Testing was developed for this purpose, and is part of the list of technologies of various scales used by Xstrata Process Support (XPS) in addressing these projects. The methodology is based on two principles: one, to ensure that the ore sample is representative and has been well-blended and subsampled; two, to perform the flotation tests in sufficient numbers of replicates with appropriate quality controls, so as to improve the reproducibility of the test data. Across ten years of practice and continuous improvement with this methodology at Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, several improvements to this method and complementary connections into sampling and quantitative mineralogy have been developed. Two case studies are reviewed. These show the capability of this system in both optimizing an existing concentrator operation and in serving a new mine scenario. Further work to improve the efficiency of this procedure has been identified.

In mid-April 1992, MINING ENGINEERING mailed a survey questionnaire relating to mining shovels and hydraulic excavators to 125 SME members working at surface mines or at the headquarters of companies that operate surface mines. The mailing was directed to individuals whose titles indicate that they have management or mine planning responsibilities for surface mining operations. A total of 56 usable surveys returned by June 17 are the basis of this report. Precious metals mines Eighteen precious metals mines or mining companies returned completed surveys in time to be included in this report. Of these, 14 use hydraulic shovels only for both ore and waste, I uses both hydraulic and rope shovels, and 2 use Caterpillar 988 front-end loaders for both ore and waste. (Of the latter 2, neither expects to be in the market for a shovel in the next three years. I of these 2 placed Harnischfeger P&H number one and O&K number two in response to the question, "Based on your current knowledge of their machines, which manufacturer would you likely chose to supply new shovels or excavators to a mine or mines operating under your responsibility, if you were in the market?") Another uses front-end loaders, make not designated. The latter does not expect to be in the market for mining shovels or excavators within the next three years. Of the final total of 14 precious metals mines using only hydraulic excavators to load ore and waste, 8 use Hitachi excavators only, 1 uses Demag excavators only, 1 uses Liebherr excavators only, 1 uses O&K excavators only, 1 uses Harnischfeger P&H and O&K excavators, 1 uses Harnischfeger P&H and Hitachi excavators, and 1 uses Hitachi and Demag excavators. Of the 14 precious metals mines using only hydraulic excavators, 7 use excavators in the 7.6 to 11.5 m; (10 to 15 cu yd) size range. Of these 7, 5 use only excavators in this size range, and they are used to load both ore and waste. 1 of the 7 also uses 11.5 to 17 m' (15 to 22 cu yd) excavators, and I also uses a 17 to 23 m3 (22 to 30 cu yd) excavator. Of the 7 remaining of these 14 precious metals mines that use only hydraulic excavators, 3 use 11.5 to 17 m' (15 to 22 cu yd), 2 use 17 to 23 m3 (22 to 30 cu yd), and 2 use less than 7.6 m' (10 cu yd) units.

Geogrids can be used as surface control on both the roof and rib in underground mines to prevent the fall of small pieces of rock and material from between the primary supports. The use of screen material such as geogrid can significantly reduce the number of ground fall injuries caused by these small rock falls. Because of the potential for reducing injuries through the use of screen, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted tests on screen materials including geogrid to determine their support characteristics and identify parameters that can affect their performance with respect to maintaining broken or failed rock. A specially designed test frame installed in the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) has been used to evaluate the load and stiffness characteristics of the screen material. Two types of geogrids with various designs have been tested-a polyester yarn and a polypropylene grid. The load-displacement characteristics of these grids were determined and the load capacity and stiffness were calculated through 20in of displacement. The load capacity and stiffness of the geogrid in general are shown to be related to the ultimate tensile strength of the screen material.

The use of quality materials (aggregates and asphalt binder) in optimal proportions is the key to producing optimally performing hot mix asphalt (HMA). The Superpave mix design standard in the US introduced specific volumetric and binder property requirements in HMA design. Different methods for HMA constituent proportioning have been proposed in various guidelines. The design process to determine the HMA blend is currently iterative and engineers rely almost exclusively on experience. This approach is time consuming and often does not result in cost-optimal HMA mixtures. This paper introduces a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) optimization model for hot-mix asphalt constituent proportioning. The MILP model minimizes the total mix cost while satisfying all the volumetric, binder and mix property specification requirements. The model has been successfully validated with real-life example. The aggregates and binder ratios from the model were in close agreement with those from the contractor. The Bailey ratios and the gradation constraints were also satisfied. The cost of the optimal mix was $0.804/Mg less than that of the contractors?. This marginal reduction might make all the difference in an industry that is highly competitive. The MILP model also demonstrated that adding RAP to the contractor?s design would reduce the cost of the blend by $5.74/Mg. The virgin binder content was reduced by 1% because of the recycled asphalt contained in the RAP. This work represents the first successful attempt in incorporating both aggregate and asphalt performance requirements into the optimization formulation. Applying these models will ensure the minimum cost mix that meets all constraints and will increase profit margins for plant operators.

"The Netherlands has major resources of sand, gravel and clay, exploited mainly for construction works and the building materials industry. As in most western countries, mineral extraction meets with considerable societal resistance. To this end, Dutch minerals policy aims to prevent extraction by promoting economical use of materials, and the use of alternative (secondary or renewable) materials. Up till recently, it also included a system of production planning to sustain supplies of regionally scarce materials. Dutch policy development is reviewed and discussed in terms of pitfalls and possibilities for mineral planning in general. Promoting secondary substitution has been quite successful, and presents an example. In contrast, the production planning system has been controversial from the start and ineffective as a result, mainly because it attempted to solve supply problems without properly addressing the underlying resistance. Plant operators in the mineral processing industry have been implementing expert systems for several years now, with the intent to increase production and reduce costs. Most systems have been installed on grinding circuits of some type and have proven that the technology is viable in that application. However, few applications on other processes have been attempted for various reasons, such as lack of reference sites, complexity of the process, lack of suitable measurements and lack of confidence in the technology. The successful application of an expert system on an Alumina Calcining kiln is the first such application in the West Indies Alumina Company (Windalco), and demonstrates how this technology can be successfully applied to other processes. The key objective of an expert system is to optimize the process. To achieve this the process must first be stabilized, followed by optimization of the operating parameters. The steps taken by this expert system to optimize the process are: • Check for abnormal conditions and deal with them using a prioritized set of special actions. • Use a selection of rule blocks to stabilize the process. • Once the process is stable, achieve additional benefits through further optimization of the process. The potential benefits that a user can expect to achieve through installing an expert system can be assessed on the basis that performance will improve from that of an "average operator" to that of the "best operator" performing at his optimum for 24 hours a day, every day. The quantifiable process benefits include: • Increased production • More consistent product quality • Reduced operating costs • Reduced standard deviation of key variables • Consistent plant operation The success of this project was measured in several ways: project implementation, realised economic benefits, and realised non-economic benefits. With a commitment to maintain the system over the long term, the longevity of the system is assured and will become an important part of the Alumina Calcining control strategy at Windalco. This paper discusses the various phases of implementing the ABB Expert Optimizer expert system, what the benefits were and the procedure that is in place to maintain the system to ensure continued long term success.

Traditionally, mineral sands are evaluated by preparing several mineral products using a combination of heavy liquid-, magnetic-, and electrostatic methods. Whole-rock assays (WRA) are then conducted on ilmenite, rutile and zircon products in order to determine trace element contents, which may affect project feasibility. Combined methods can be time consuming, expensive and even outdated due to the use of banned and toxic chemicals such as clerici solution. Coupled with large field-sample quantities, these procedures can potentially introduce unacceptable sampling and related errors. Modern mineralogical analysis techniques can provide complete mineralogical inventories on a single THM product, reducing the amount of processing involved in satisfactory characterization of early exploration samples. A small exploration sample can be processed to produce a small THM concentrate using readily available gravity/density methods. In turn, the THM product is submitted for Whole Rock Analysis (WRA) and mineralogical inspection by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and microscopic evaluation. Modal mineralogy and textural data can be determined using optical methods, automated image analysis, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) based systems. Benefits of automation are reproducibility and the capability of rapidly analysing thousands of particles as opposed to manual optical methods. Automated systems include the use of Automated Digital Image Analysis (ADIS), and SEM-based systems such as the Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) and QemSCAN. For detailed mineral chemistry, microanalysis techniques ranging from electron microprobe (EMPA) to Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry and Laser Ablation Mass-Induced Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LAM-ICP-MS) are used. Examples of these automated and analytical methods are presented. ADIS at SGS-Lakefield Research uses optical characteristics to identify and measure mineral species in THM samples; rutile, pseudorutile, ilmenite and leucoxene can be distinguished. Analysis of a single THM product provides bulk modal mineralogy and grain size distribution of particles and the individual mineral grains. Textural information is also obtained detailing mineral associations as well as degree of alteration. Where textural and chemical resolution renders mineral identification ambiguous, SEM-based methods offer better resolution. Examples of this ambiguity are shown in this paper, which leads to QemSCAN as the preferred method where within-grain variability is concerned. Sampling and measurement strategies are followed to meet study objectives, providing a value-added framework for a sequential, cost-effective strategy, which will meet due diligence and bankable accreditation criteria. Studying a THM product by electron microprobe and LAMICP-MS may reveal potential fatal flaws related to mineral chemistry. Low detection limits in the range of 200 to 500ppm are possible using electron microprobe analysis for suitable matrixes (U, Th in zircon). For the detection of ultra low level elemental contaminants, LAM ICPMS is the most accurate method of evaluation. Elements including U, Th, La, Ce, Nb, and V in Ti-minerals can be determined down to 50 ppm.

Stoppings are required to resist lateral forces on the face of the structure to control pressure differentials created by ventilating air. The design criteria in other parts of the world, including Australia, exceed this requirement by specifying over pressurization control to as much as 14 kPa (2 psi) in the active sections and 35 kPa (5 psi) in the main ventilating control areas. This is done to provide protection to the mine workers from explosive or air blast events within the mine that can create this over pressurization. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research to develop a new testing protocol for rating mine ventilation stoppings. The premise of this work is that arch-loading conditions more accurately reflects the transverse load capabilities of stoppings in underground coal mines than the freestanding flexural strength test specified in the current Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). This work clearly shows that the transverse load capabilities of dry-stacked, mine ventilation stoppings are dependent upon the material strength of the block and the height and thickness of the wall, none of which are part of the current CFR criteria based on ASTM E-72 specifications. This paper compares the transverse load capabilities of several block materials and wall dimensions commonly used in stopping constructions based upon simulated three-hinge, rigid-arch loading tests of half-wall constructions in the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator. The results indicate a wide-range of transverse load capacities, ranging from as low as 21 kPa (0.3 psi) to as much as 117 kPa (17 psi) for the conditions evaluated in this study. The current CFR criteria do not distinguish between applications of these stopping designs despite their wide variance in transverse load capabilities, which is not conducive to employing ventilation control strategies that isolate certain sections of the mine to prevent injury to mine workers.

The last 12 months has seen the construction of the first Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM excavated tunnel in New Zealand on the Project Hobson sewer storage tunnel for Watercare Services Limited, with the concurrent excavation of the second EPB tunnel on the Rosedale Outfall project for North Shore City Council. Together these tunnels involve a total length of 6km and follow an 8 year pause in TBM activity in Auckland. TBM performance on these two projects is thus of significant interest as there are four major tunneling projects totaling over NZ$8B being planned for Auckland, in similar ground conditions. Auckland?s bedrock is a weak sandstone/siltstone (East Coast Bays Formation), subject to infilled paleovalleys. The geology in the region has been significantly influenced by volcanic activity; 49 volcanoes are present within 20km of the city centre. The paper describes the design and construction challenges for the projects, including TBM performance, ?sticky spoil? management, and risks associated with basalt lava flows and two paleovalleys. Watercare?s Project Hobson also saw the successful implementation of a Geotechnical Baseline Report?one of the first uses of this type of document in Australasia. Rosedale Outfall is designed for high internal water pressures with varying hydraulic flows, with the risk of exfiltration explicitly addressed.

Constructing tunnels in congested urban areas requires tunnels to be placed closer together and with less cover than was previously necessary. Contract CQ031 of New York?s East Side Access project will construct four six-meter diameter bored tunnels in a three-up one-down ?T? configuration, with less than three meters of soil between the tunnels. Mixed-face rock and glacial till conditions with a high ground water table will be encountered under active railroad yards. The tunnels will also pass beneath the busiest railroad interlocking in North America with cover as shallow as three meters. This paper discusses the challenges of designing segmentally lined tunnels for these conditions.

Borates are minerals that contain boron. Trace amounts exist in rocks, soil, water and people. Boron-containing ores are rare and U.S. Borax, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto Borax, controls one of the world’s two world-class borate deposits. Through its global systems of mines, refineries, ports, sales offices and distribution centers, the company supplies nearly 45 percent of the world’s demand for borates. Borax has been mining borates in California for more than a century. This year the company celebrated 131 years of continuous business in the Golden State and 76 years at its operations in Boron, the site of California’s largest openpit mine. It also has mines and refineries in Argentina, refineries and ship-ping facilities in Europe and technical staff in the United States, North and South America, Europe and Asia Pacific. So, with the 130±years of borate mining and processing experience behind it as well as its global marketing and distribution centers, there is very little that Borax does not know about borates.

In this study, a 3D model of the shovel motion based multi-body system dynamics in the Automatic Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical Systems (ADAMS) environment was developed. The kinematics model of the shovel was modeled as a multi-body system, which comprises the lower, upper, and the attachment mechanisms. The Euler-Lagrangian equations were employed as the computational framework to describe the dynamic behavior of the model. A virtual prototype of the shovel was built in the ADAMS software environment. This environment allows the visualization of a 3D motion of the general mechanical system and the prediction of interference of the moving components of the shovel. The numerical analysis and animation of digging, swinging and dumping motions for the shovel were performed. The superimposed display of the deployment for the shovel in three phases allows a detailed examination of the dynamic interference among assembly components. In the processing industries, it is well known that particle shape is an important factor which determines the behavior of particulate systems. For example, system properties of technological significance including rheology, suspension stability, agglomeration, packing, permeability…etc, are affected by particle shape. In this regard, characterization and analysis of particle shape is essential for more detailed understanding and improved development of particulate processes. In general, it is clear that the behavior of these systems depends on the statistical characteristics of particle shape. Remarkably few techniques exist to predict the mechanical and hydrodynamic behavior of an irregularly shaped particle or a population of irregularly shaped particles for that matter. The lack of models and correlations can be attributed to the wide variety and complexity of particle shapes, the difficulty of defining shape descriptors suitable for modeling, the limitations of measuring shape, and the lack of classifying techniques to characterize particle shape. In this paper, we present information on how 3D particle shape can be measured, characterized, and analyzed using cone-beam X-ray microtomography (XMT).

Coal production in the United States in 2008 reached a record level of 1.06 Gt (1,171.5 million st), according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) (Table 1). This is an increase of 2.2 percent, or 22.5 Mt (24.8 million st) above the 2007 level and 7.9 Mt (8.7 million st) above the prior record level set in 2006. Although coal production was higher in 2008, U.S. total coal consumption decreased in all sectors for the year. Coal consumption in the electric power sector in 2008 was lower by 0.3 percent, while coking coal consumption decreased by 2.8 percent and the other industrial sector declined by 3.7 percent. The commercial and institutional sector, that had been called the ?residential and commercial? sector prior to 2008, declined by 0.6 percent in 2008. It is the smallest of all the coal-consuming sectors. (Note: All percent-age change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) U.S. coal exports were significantly higher in 2008, while coal imports decreased during the year. Total coal stocks increased in 2008, as some consumers added to their stockpiles. The coal synfuel industry, which grew throughout most of this decade, disappeared from the scene due to the expiration of the available federal tax credits at the end of 2007. The decline in coal consumption during the year was the consequence of slowing domestic economic growth, particularly in the latter half of the year, combined with the weather conditions in 2008, resulting in lower demand for electricity. Preliminary data show that total generation in the electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers, including useful thermal output) in the U.S. decreased in 2008. Enclosed cabs have been used for many years to isolate workers on mobile equipment in the mining industry for health and safety reasons. These enclosed cabs create a microenvironment for workers where they can be either more protected or more vulnerable to contaminants. Over the past decade, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has performed substantial research efforts to improve the air quality inside enclosed cabs of both underground and surface mobile mining equipment. In these efforts, NIOSH has partnered with mining companies, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and manufacturers of filtrations and pressurizations systems in a synergistic effort to reduce respirable dust and improve the air quality inside these enclosed cabs. Various field studies over this time have shown an array of results ranging from very minor to very significant reductions (protection factor: 3 ? 89) in respirable dust levels inside these enclosed cabs. In addition to and concurrent to the field work, NIOSH also performed a comprehensive laboratory study to evaluate all the factors involved in cab filtration and pressurization systems and identified those factors that were most significant for an effective system. From this comprehensive research effort, the key components for an effective filtration and pressurization system have been identified in an effort to provide the best air quality, thus minimizing the respirable dust exposure, to equipment operators inside of enclosed cabs of mobile mining equipment.

In its April 1991 issue, MINING ENGINEERING published a salary survey form asking for information relating to engineering and management jobs in the minerals industry. 1038 of these forms were filled out and returned, most of them being received in the magazine's offices at SME headquarters before the end of June 1991. An SME volunteer took on the task of tabulating and analyzing data from the forms, but the press of other business interfered with this work, and publication has been delayed until this issue of MINING ENGINEERING. Appreciation is extended to SME members who took the time to fill out and return the salary survey forms, and our apologies go to MINING ENGINEERING'S readers for the delay in publication. Of the total number of forms received, more than 97% were from SME members. The geographic distribution of the respondents closely mirrored that of SME membership as a whole, about 50% being from the Society's Western Region, 19% from the Central Region, and 23% from the Eastern Region. About 8% were from outside the US. Average salaries for each of the four geographic areas ranged between $55,000 and $60,000, with the highest average in Eastern Region (Fig. 1). Respondents were asked to answer a number of questions formulated to determine if there are significant differences in salaries based on the type of organization for which they work. As indicated by Table 1, salary averages at mining companies do not vary markedly with the size of the company: • Large companies, defined as those having more than $1 billion in annual sales, accounted for just over 16% of the returns. Their average salary was $61,840 per year.
