"This article describes the re-engineering principles applied in the design of a personnel transportation system for the Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine in the Rustenburg area of South Africa. It incorporates conveyor belt travelling, chairlift operation, and also includes consideration of proposed changes/modifications to the existing conveyor belt infrastructure.The purpose of the project was to identify, through a process of evaluation, the appropriate option and/or combination of transportation options that would be safe in terms of personnel transportation as well as cost-effective. Alternative measures for transporting personnel (not using belt riding) would have a significant positive spin-off, increasing the availability of the belt and thereby increasing production. This paper explores the feasibility of interventions that would improve safety through eliminating risk associated with personnel transportation as well as contributing towards improving the mine’s position on the cost curve.The design in consideration at the Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine consists of two shaft systems, namely the North Shaft and South Shaft, each comprising twin decline shafts. One of the decline shafts is equipped with a conveyor belt for rock and personnel transportation, and the other with a winder for trackbound material transport. The conveyor belt has been used for personnel transportation since the commissioning of the shafts. The conveyor belt is equipped with platforms for personnel getting off and on the belt and a number of safety devices designed to ensure safety while travelling on the belt. Intensive training in the practical aspects of belt riding is given to every person, and unsupervised riding on the belt is permitted only once belt riding competence is demonstrated. Despite this, the safety results were poor, with 106 injuries between 2006 and May 2013. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported during this period.An investigation of alternative means for personnel transportation or engineered solutions to the current conveyor belt infrastructure in the safest, most effective, and most economical way was therefore needed. There was a major risk of safety-related stoppages being imposed following another belt accident/incident. This would prevent the mine from transporting personnel underground by belt and result in major production losses. From the commissioning of the Phase 2 shaft deepening project on both shafts, dedicated chairlifts have been used for personnel transportation as opposed to the conveyor belt installed in the Phase 1 area. The chairlifts have been in operation since 2004 and no chairlift-related incidents have been recorded thus far. According to safety statistics, it is clear that the chairlift is the safer method for the transportation of people in the shaft.To fulfil the objectives/scope of this study, it was recommended that both primary (new chairlift decline with infrastructure) and secondary options (modifications to the current conveyor belt infrastructure) be considered for implementation on both the North Shaft and South Shaft to reduce or eliminate accidents/incidents as a result of belt transportation. The associated capital expenditure would be approximately R200 million. Considering the future impact on the business as a whole, this would definitely be capital well spent."

Information on rock stress is important for safe mining in seismically active ground. On a major gold mine, a few tens of crews are continuously conducting geological drilling with small pneumatic machines. However, stress measurements are not often carried out in South African deep-level gold mines. One of the reasons is the drilling diameter that overcoring requires, which is much larger than the diameters used in regular geological drilling, e.g. Boart Longyear Metre Eater, which drills A[O] or B[O] holes. Larger diameter holes result in slower drilling advance, more load in transportation and handling at sites, and higher cost. In order to enable overcoring in BX size (60 mm diameter), we modified the compact conical-ended borehole overcoring (CCBO) technique that has been suggested by International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and was originally designed for NX drilling (76 mm diameter). With a single overcoring, the 3-D stress tensor can be determined. We tested this modified method at a depth of about 3 km at Moab Khotsong mine in South Africa. We worked with drilling crew who usually work at geological drilling with the Metre Eater. In January 2011, we tried using regular geological drilling tools (a sequence of a normal BX bit, reamer, and rod) without success. In August and September 2011, introducing stabilizers and thin BX bits, we succeeded. We could complete a cycle of procedures necessary for an overcoring, including shaping the borehole-end conically, glueing a 16-element strain cell, and overcoring, within 2.5 hours. Only 10 cm overcoring is needed, which increases the chance of successful overcoring in heavily fractured conditions. This modified method is suitable for up-dip holes to depths of 10-15 m from tunnels, and has the potential to be widely used at the initial stage of geological exploration drilling at many localities.

Coal is mined by both surface and underground methods and its extraction is normally characterized by numerous hazards that can lead to catastrophic accidents, which result in devastating effects such as injuries or fatalities, damage to mining assets, and destruction of mineral resources. These hazards exist due to the ability of coal to support combustion and its association with toxic, flammable, and explosive gases. Underground coal mining entails higher safety risks than opencast coal mining, chiefly because of issues relating to mine ventilation and mine collapse. Furthermore, coal mine collapses mostly occur due to crumbling of mining supports, especially in room and pillar mining systems. To avoid such adverse occurrences, safety management systems need to be in place. This study reviews the various technological safety systems and principles that are used for safe-rescue and self-escape of miners in underground coal fires, particularly in South Africa, using data obtained from Mines Rescue Services in Carltonville, South Africa. The outcome of the review shows that practising safety culture has been given priority across many South African underground coal mines through setting up safety management systems and encouraging workers to stay committed to safety principles.

The use of a time series variogram as an aid in controlling the quality of a product was pioneered by Pierre M. Gy and is described. The ability to analyse and interpret covariance relationships time series data is possible using the variogram. The concept of stream heterogeneity allows sources of variability in process streams to be identified and isolated. Principally this is distributional heterogeneity that is due to a short range effect of segregation in the process stream related to size or composition distribution of the material on a local scale and due to a long-range change in the size and grade of the material stream. The variogram is simply a tool for representing these sources of variability in a way that is explicit, allowing identification of the source and providing important insights to temporal continuity between samples. This paper describes the chronologically related large-scale variability in an iron ore process stream (%Fe), and illustrates the control and mitigation of variability at various stages within the process using a variogram. Three main sources of variability are identified including the random variability V[0], the process variability V[1], and the variability due to cyclical phenomena V[cyclic], arising from human routine or mechanical defects. These sources of variability can be represented on the control chart that provides the plant superintendent with insights as to the sampling capability of the systems in place. Maintaining levels of variability within customer specification limits requires that production systems be controlled without overcorrecting for the trends in changing quality. This can be done only by representing the limits of control relative to the limits of specification on a control chart. Where the specification limits encroach on the control limits, one or the other, or both, may need to be changed; specification limits that constrain the control limits lead to reactive decision making that is expensive and stressful for plant operators.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Sc. (Mining Engineering) degree This report investigates the optimization of a raiseline in order to open up the ore reserve quicker. The project was carried out at Mponeng Mine (an Anglogold shaft formerly known as Western Deep Levels 1 Shaft and South Mine, in Carletonville). The project was divided into two focus areas namely: ?To design an optimum layout of a raiseline, which includes the scheduling of all activities for the establishment of the infrastructure. Consideration was given to the blasting practice, mining cycle, orepass placement and slusher positioning. Two designs were carried out on the above basis. ?The design of a ledging operation/practice to match the optimized layout of the raiseline. The ledging cycle design involved a thorough investigation into the possible use of drill rigs, Electronic Delay Detonators (EDD) blasting technology, longer drilled holes, Threshold Blasting (THROB),and water jet cleaning.

Since the commissioning of the Tati Hydrometallurgical Demonstration Plant (HDP), which produces Ni and Cu cathodes as well as Co salt from sulphide concentrate employing Activox® technology for leaching, no kinetic data has been generated from the plant under normal operating conditions, from start-up to steady state. Therefore, this study seeks to determine the rate of reactions in the leaching circuit with a view to obtaining kinetic data for the system under the current operating conditions. Within the five-compartment autoclave operating at temperatures of 105°C to 110°C and 1100 kPa pressure, the extraction of Ni, Cu, and Co ions into solution is achieved through the oxidation of the sulphide concentrate using approximately 50 kg H2SO4 per ton, 10 kg NaCl per ton, and 1.21 kg O2 per kilogram of S2-. The autoclave reactions showed complex kinetics, with the reactions proceeding via some intermediate(s) before the formation of products. The results suggest that the reactions were dependent on the size of the metal ion of interest and the concentrations of the metal ions in the Tati concentrate as well as in chloride leaching. The order of the leaching rate constants was Fe2+ > Cu2+ > Ni2+ > Co2+ in all the compartments studied. The rates of leaching were also found to decrease as the concentrate moves from compartment 1 to compartment 4. For compartments 1 to 3, leaching was observed to be preceded by dilution of the repulp liquor (copper raffinate). The leaching rate for compartment 5 was slightly lower than that of compartment 1 but higher than the rates of compartments 2, 3, and 4 for all the metals studied. For most of the 20th century optical petrography has been the primary petrological and mineralogical tool used to characterize coal. The development of quantitative SEM-based techniques, e.g. QEMSCAN®, for coal began only about a decade ago. The application of these techniques for coal lagged behind other commodities, but they are currently being developed with the aim to provide ?one complete analysis? for coal. Quantitative SEM-based techniques are supplemented by quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD). Recent indications are that these more modern techniques cannot replace the ?standard? petrographic and chemical evaluations, but rather complement them where and when required. The great advantage of quantitative SEM-based techniques is that they are very rapid, with the result that large volumes of samples can be processed on a routine basis. This is ideal for coal type identification, since the results can be used in the creation of ?intelligent? composites. This can lead to the more speedy evaluation of coal deposits by reducing the number of samples on which detailed metallurgical and characterization test work is required, without an increase in the overall statistical error of the resource model. Coal petrography, however, remains important for the prediction of the coking characteristics of certain coals and coal products. As a consequence it is therefore important that any coal laboratory be able to produce data with confidence. Small replacements of C12-trithiocarbonate (C12-TTC) for dithiocarbonate (DTC)/dithiophosphate(DTP) in a reagent suite for the flotation of platinum group metals (PGM) have significantly improved the rejection of gangue. Coupled to this is an improvement in kinetics, grade and recovery of PGMs. In a pilot-plant trial, after a 5 mole per cent replacement of the current DTC/DTP collector combination by C12-TTC, large opaque bubbles were replaced by small clear ones. In addition, a similar flotation response was realized with one-third of the current depressant dosage. During a preliminary plant trial on underground UG2 ore, the initial rougher concentrates were characterized by higher PGM concentrate grades and this was in part due to improved chromite rejection. The concentrate produced from the TTC trial also exhibited a much finer particle size distribution. The overall circuit performance, which included secondary regrind and flotation, showed an increase in concentrate grade of approximately 44% while the tailings grade remained unchanged

ABSTRACT: Strength, deformability and fluid flow properties of rock joints are to a great extent controlled by the surface roughness. The hydraulic conductivity of a rock fracture depends on the aperture distribution, the surface roughness and the contact area, each of which depend on the stresses that act on the fracture plane. However, despite much recent work, a complete understanding of the relationship between void space geometry, contact areas, applied stress, and hydraulic conductivity has yet to be achieved. Moreover, although in situ rock joints are subjected to both normal and shear loading, few studies have been conducted to investigate the effect of shear displacements on fluid flow through a single rock fracture, and which have addressed the issue of flow anisotropy induced by shearing. Experimental flow tests show that with increasing shear displacement, the fracture becomes heterogeneous and anisotropic, and becomes more permeable in the direction parallel to the displacement (Yeo et al., 1998). On the other hand, dry shear tests show that the surface fails in areas facing the shear direction (Grasselli and Egger, 2003). Moreover, the experimental results confirm that the shear strength of rock joints is direction-dependent. In this paper, a three-dimensional morphological description of several a natural fractures that have undergone shear displacement were generated using the Automated Topographic System at the University of Basel. The data analysis method of Grasselli (Grasselli et al., 2002a) is used to determine the surface parameters that are known to control the shear strength. Simulations of fluid flow through this fracture, in various directions relative to the direction of shear, are conducted using an FEM flow simulator. The results constitute the most detailed analysis yet undertaken of the relationship between shear displacement, shear strength, and fracture transmissivity. RESUME: La rugosité des joints en roche joue un rôle primaire sur la réponse hydromécanique du massif fracturé. En effet, la conductivité hydraulique des discontinuités en roche est influencée par la rugosité, et par la distribution des ouvertures et des zones de contact, dont chacun dépend de l’effort normal et du cisaillement qui agissent sur la surface du joint. Les essais d'écoulement en laboratoire montrent que si cisaillée, la fracture devient anisotrope, et plus perméable dans la direction parallèle au déplacement (Yeo et al., 1998). D'autre part, les essais de cisaillement indiquent que seules les zones de la surface qui font face à la direction de cisaillement sont impliquées dans le cisaillement (Grasselli et Egger, 2003). D'ailleurs, les résultats expérimentaux confirment que la résistance au cisaillement des joints de roche est dépendante de la direction. Dans cet article, plusieurs fractures en roche ont été analysées en utilisant un système de mesure topographique à l'Université de Bâle. La méthode d'analyse de données proposée par Grasselli (Grasselli et al., 2002a) a été employée pour calculer les paramètres de la surface qui déterminent la résistance au cisaillement. Plusieurs simulations du coulage, dans diverses directions relativement à la direction du cisaillement, ont été faites à l’aide d’un programme de calcul à éléments finis. Les résultats constituent une des analyses les plus détaillé sur le rapport entre le déplacement pendant le cisaillement, la résistance au cisaillement, et la transmissivité spécifique de la fracture. ZUSAMMENFASSUMG: Die Festigkeit, Verformbarkeit und Hydromechanik von geklüftetem Fels wird hauptsächlich von der Oberflächenrauhigkeit der Bruchflächen bestimmt. Die hydraulische Leitfähigkeit einer Kluft hängt von der Verteilung der Rissbreiten, der Oberflächenrauhigkeit und den Kontaktflächen ab, die ihrerseits von dem auf die Bruchfläche wirkenden Druck beeinflusst werden. Obgleich in letzter Zeit viel in dieser Richtung geforscht wurde, kann der Zusammenhang zwischen Porenraumgeometrie, Kontaktflächen, wirkendem Druck und hydraulischer Leitfähigkeit noch nicht vollständig erklärt werden. Obwohl Klüfte in situ sowohl Normal- als auch Schubspannungen ausgesetzt sind, wurde der Einfluss von Scherverschiebungen auf den Kluftwasserfluss und die daraus resultierende Fliessanisotropie in einer einzelnen Kluft bisher kaum untersucht. Experimentelle Untersuchungen des Durchflusses zeigen, dass die Kluft für größer werdende Scherverschiebungen heterogen und anisotrop wird wobei die Permeabilität parallel zur Verschiebungsrichtung ansteigt (Yeo et al., 1998). Andererseits zeigen trockene Scherversuche, dass die Oberfläche an Stellen versagt, die gegen die Verschiebungsrichtung anstehen (Grasselli und Egger, 2003). Des weiteren bestätigen die experimentellen Ergebnisse eine Richtungsabhängigkeit der Kluftscherfestigkeit. In diesem Artikel wird eine dreidimensionale morphologische Beschreibung mehrerer natürlicher, durch Scherspannungen verschobener Klüfte vorgestellt, die vom Automated Topographic System der Universität von Basel erstellt wurde. Das von Grasselli (Grasselli et al., 2002a) entwickelte Datenanalyseverfahren wird zur Feststellung der die Scherfestigkeit bestimmenden Oberflächenparameter herangezogen. Mittels einer FEM-Simulation wird der Durchfluss durch eine solche Kluft in verschiedenen Richtungen simuliert. Die Ergebnisse stellen die bisher ausführlichste Analyse des Zusammenhangs zwischen Scherverschiebung, Scherfestigkeit und Durchlässigkeit (Transmissivität) einer Kluft dar.

The Chambishi Metals Cobalt Plant in Zambia has recently installed a novel oxidation/precipitation pressure leach process as part of the COSAC (CObalt from Slag And Copper as by-product) Project. Aniron-cobalt-copper alloy, produced by the carbothermic reduction of slag, is atomized and pumped to the COSAC Leach Plant, where cobalt and copper are recovered as dissolved sulphate salts, andiron is rejected primarily as hematite. Cobalt and copper are subsequently recovered as cathode metal in the existing Chambish ioperation by conventional electrowinning. This paper examines the challenges faced during the design and subsequent successful commissioning of the COSAC Leach Plant. The challenges discussed include alloy handling, autoclave design, autoclave cooler design, residue liquor recovery and the water balance design. Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation is a zinc-lead mine located in southern of Namibia. It is currently considering the development of a low grade ore body containing about 2.8% zinc. This ore can be utilised by the concentrator if it could be upgraded prior to the ball mill. Preliminary work indicated that the ore may be upgraded in a pre-beneficiating stage by using dense medium separation, X-ray sorting or a combination thereof to a feed grade of minimum 9% zinc. This paper describes the process followed in evaluating the technologies for pre-beneficiation. The results from test work indicated that the low grade ore is amenable to pre-beneficiation by both dense medium separation and X-ray sorting. A comparison between the two technologies showed that dense medium separation marginally outperformed X-ray sorting on grade and recovery. The results for the X-ray sorting were achieved by tuning the calibration curve specifically for the samples tested.

Impala Platinum, the second largest platinum producer in the world, is embarking on a major expansion strategy to increase its platinum output from 1.95 moz to 2.8 moz by the year 2008. The smelter complex, situated in Rustenburg, will undergo substantial modifications, and will require a solution to the capture and treatment of the smelter off-gases and dust produced during smelting and converting operations. One of the solutions explored was an integrated approach, where all the off-gases from both the primary smelting electric furnaces and the converter operations are routed to a large central gas cleaning and double catalysis, double absorption acid plant. In-line sulphur burning, utilizing a highly flexible LURO1spin cup burner with a turn down ratio of 50%, ensures that the acid plant operates independently of operating conditions at the smelter complex.

"Two shortened test procedures for estimating the Bond ball work index are compared for suitability of use on Zambian/DRC-type copper–cobalt ores. The first procedure is based on a batch milling test while the second procedure is based on a limited locked-cycle test. Both procedures were conducted using a standard Bond test mill. INTRODUCTION The Bond ball work index is widely used in the field of minerals processing as an indicator of ore grindability. The work index is determined by means of a locked-cycle test procedure that typically requires seven to eight cycles to stabilise at a re-circulating load of 250%. A typical test requires between three to four kilogram of ore sample and around eight hours of operator time. For geometallurgical test work applications, where a large number of variability samples are to be tested, it would be highly beneficial to use a test procedure that requires less sample mass and operator time. Certain test work laboratories, for example SGS and JK Tech, are already offering various types of shortened test procedures for estimating the Bond ball work index. This paper discusses a comparison of two shortened test procedures that were evaluated for suitability of use on Zambian/DRC-type copper–cobalt ores. EXPERIMENTAL Test Procedure 1 – Batch Milling The first test procedure is derived from a batch milling approach proposed by the University of Hacettepe (Aksani, 2000). Some modifications were, however, made to the data analysis method from that originally proposed. During this test procedure, a 700 mL volume of sample is milled in a standard Bond test mill for a pre-determined number of revolutions. The feed and product particle size distributions are measured for each test. These results are then used to back-calculate a cumulative breakage rate parameter (k) for each particle size, according to the following formula:"

Traditionally the feed to coal preparation plants was de-slimed at 0,5 mm. The +0,5 mm size fraction was processed via dense-medium cyclones and the -0,5 mm size fraction was beneficiated with froth flotation, water-only cyclones or spirals. With the introduction of large diameter cyclones, the aperture sizes of de-sliming screens have progressively increased to about 3 mm in the belief that the larger cyclones are not able to effectively beneficiate coal which has a particle size below the ?breakaway? size. The efficiency of separation in the large dense-medium cyclones is improved by presenting a coarser feed to the units. At the same time, the capacity of the de-sliming screens is increased due to the larger screen apertures and in effect, the throughput capacity of the dense-medium section is increased. The 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction, which was previously processed in the dense-medium cyclones, is now added to the fine coal size fraction and processed by water-only methods such as Teetered Bed Separators (TBS) and spirals. Whether this practice is the most economical way to process the 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction requires further thought since the best processing route for the 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction will depend on a number of factors, amongst which are: o The washability of the coal and the amount of near-density material o Processing efficiency o Specification of the required product o The price paid by the customer for the product o The cost of processing the coal Breakaway size The ?breakaway? size is defined as the particle size below which the Epm of the smaller particles starts to decrease significantly. Bosman1 provides an approximate breakaway size versus cyclone diameter (Figure 1). It should be kept in mind though that the Epm of the small particles is a function not only of the cyclone diameter but also of feed pressure, medium density, medium viscosity, particle shape and density, top-size of particles in the feed, etc.

Underground mining in high rock-stress environments can induce unanticipated dynamic rockmass deformation, posing a serious risk to the workforce. Data collected by seismic networks are imperative for the design-as-you-mine process. Often an inappropriate assessment of the seismic hazard is done when unnecessary data are included in analytical techniques, particularly short-term time frames. Depending on the methodology or application of data analysis and interpretation, some of the information may not be relevant and even detract from the objective. By using the spatial event clusters associated with active workplaces to define the shape and size of the polygons for data selection for subsequent analysis, a problematic subjective component can be eliminated. The mining of tabular reefs in South Africa, be they gold- or platinum group metals, is very extensive, and underground workplaces are often widespread. Production stoppages are very costly, especially for marginal mines, so there is just cause not to evacuate an entire operation’s workforce following the occurrence of a large mining-induced seismic event. A rationale based on the damaging peak particle velocities (PPV) of the past seismicity can exclude the unaffected underground personnel and allow a quick orderly withdrawal where required. Micro-deformation may precede rockbursting, which can occur on-shift close to the workface. A mine-wide array of geophones suitable for the accurate location and analysis of seismicity may not be able to detect these higher-frequency emissions. Inexpensive but fit-for-purpose accelerometers, providing real-time, continuous measurement of acoustic rockmass deformation near the workplace, integrated through underground and surface communications networks, are shown to record ‘rock-talk’, clearly distinguishable from the instrument background noise, which can be in the order of hours leading up to an imminent damaging seismic event.

Inauguration of the new political dispensation in South Africa in 1994 initiated a dynamic shift in the ownership, management and development of the country’s affluent mineral heritage. The process of substituting the old South African regime with a new equitable system, started soon after the 1994 election of the African National Congress (ANC) to parliament. The Congress’ Freedom Charter revealed the intent of the new dispensation when it called for radical transformation of mineral development. However, since 1955 there have been important changes affecting the rules of mineral development. These are: •Firstly, a drastic change in politics ushered in by negotiation, a spirit of reconciliation and a desire to settle disputes peacefully •Secondly, the globalization of the South African mining industry in tandem with the opening of domestic mineral resources to foreign capitalists; and •Thirdly, the introduction of sustainable development as a holistic approach to mineral development in order to replace traditional narrow-minded environmental management. Each of these significantly shaped the new mineral investment environment of South Africa. In any process or organization inefficiencies are costly. In times of abundance this reality often does not receive much attention. During such times the focus is rather on increasing capacity to increase production. However, there is a growing awareness in the world of tougher economic, social as well as environmental conditions, and enterprises find themselves facing greater demands for accountability towards shareholders, the environment and the public, as well as growing competition for market share and limited global resources. This reality is no different in ensuring a sustainable mineral sands operation. In order to achieve this, any operation needs to be stripped of all process as well as operational inefficiencies. In this context it has become essential for any Mineral Separation Plant (MSP) to have the necessary process monitoring and control systems in place to continually monitor and optimize the production of on-spec products and maximize operational efficiency and consistency. The MSP Grade Control Solution developed by Crusader Systems and running on top of the CSense platform contributes towards these goals by improving the consistent production of on-grade product. This allows the process to operate closer to the maximum allowable product grade constraint, which in turn maximizes production.

In 1992, a paper was compiled highlighting a common-sense approach to electric smelting at Impala Platinum. Since then, the smelter complex has undergone considerable changes. Mineral economics, UG2 exploitation, and changing environmental legislation have enforced numerous process upgrades, yet a common-sense approach has always been adopted. This document details the major changes in the smelter complex at Mineral Processes (Minpro) over the past 15 years, and provides the rationale for the changes. This paper describes the process of scraper winch pull force measurement and shows the results of the actual winch pull force in extreme stall situations as well as during the face and gulley cleaning. It was found that by slowing down the motor and causing it to slip, torque up to 3.5 times higher than the nominal can be developed, resulting in the same increase of winch pull force. On the other hand, measurements of the actual force needed for cleaning of the face and the gully have shown that the currently used winches are too powerful. The extra torque that can be developed by the already too powerful winch motor poses a significant danger and necessitates the implementation of measures that will eliminate this risk.
