This paper describes the method used at Agnes Gold Mine in the calculation of pillar strengths, which involves a back-analysis type of approach. The results obtained there are comparable with those obtained by accepted formulae for pillar strength. It was found that a stress level of 70 MPa for the width of combined pillars (Le. crown and sill pillars) causes failure of the reef drives as well as the tops and bottoms of the stope side walls. As shrinkage stoping to depths of more than 650 m would result in very low percentage extractions, alternative methods of stoping will have to be investigated for these depths.

The transportation, by water that flows through a pipeline, of coals in the form of water-impermeable cylinders is discussed, and shown to have distinct advantages over other forms of coal transportation, including significantly reduced costs for larger throughputs. The description of the concept comprises various aspects of the system, such as methods for the manufacture of coal logs, their injection into the pipeline, the manner in which they are conveyed in the water in the pipe, and the methods used for their preparation as feed material to electric power stations at the end of the pipeline. It is pointed out that the technology involved in the transportation of coal in the form of logs via pipelines is applicable also to other minerals and commodities.

Plastics make ideal agents for removing oxygen from iron ore in blast furnaces, and save on oil and coal as well. The ore mined at Black Mountain is of a complex nature, being composed of both magnetic and massive sulphides, which have greatly varying metal values. Because of this, there is need for a rapid method of assaying for the continuous monitoring and control of the process streams, and the Outokompu Courier onstream analysis system and the Proscon process-control computer systems have therefore been installed. Geostatistics In view of the continuing demand, the Department of Mining and Mineral Sciences in association with Special Courses Division, Department of Adult Education and Extramural Studies, both of the University of Leeds, will offer two further courses on A Practical Introduction to Geostatistics in 1981, each covering ten working days. The courses will run from 30th March to 10th April and 14th to 25th September.

(Visitor) Picklers and galvanizers in and around Johannesburg are encountering an ever-increasing problem in disposing of spent liquors from their hydrochloric acid pickling baths. Particularly troublesome is the zinc-contaminated liquor that is produced as a result of the clean-up of rejects from the galvanizing operation. Because of the volatility of zinc chloride. this liquor presents difficulties when processed in a conventional pyrohydrolysis acid-recovery unit. The paper describes the Metsep Process. developed by the National Institute for Metallurgy and Woodall-Duckham S.A. (Pty) Ltd. which involves the use of continuous ion exchange for the separation of the zinc from the pickle liquor. and the use of liquid-liquid extraction for the conversion of zinc chloride eluate to salable zinc sulphate. A description of laboratory and pilot-plant tests is given. and the approach used in the design of a full-scale continuous- ionexchange plant is outlined.

In February 1996 the OECD's Environment Policy Committee will commemorate its 25th anniversary with a fifth meeting at Ministerial level. Environment ministers will be taking stock of the progress made by OECD countries in protecting and managing the environment in that quarter-century, and sharing views on likely challenges and co-operative responses. Ministers can point to many important accomplishments. Scientific understanding and technological tools for establishing and monitoring risks to human health and the environment have improved dramatically since the early 1970s. All OECD countries now have in place comprehensive environmental legislation, supported by specialized institutions for policy design, implementation and enforcement. The results of these efforts are increasingly evident in the form of cleaner air and water, and improved protection of natural areas, notwithstanding the many complex problems that remain.

In order to test the applicability of elastodynamic codes in the modeling of mining related problems, comparisons are made between seismic data and numerical analyses. The dynamic finite difference program WA VE is used for the modeling of a horizontal stope in a deep mine. The slip along a vertical fault situated within the positive excess shear stress lobe of the stope initiates seismic waves. The stope-fault geometry is modeled in both two and three dimensions. The three dimensional non-slip weakening WAVE analyses correlate well with Brune's analytical model. For accurate modeling of the peak particle velocities predicted by McGarr's empirical relationship, it is recommended that a three-dimensional stope -fault model is used, with the amount of slip weakening dependent on the magnitude of the event.

Dr. K. Gebhard In his excellent and comprehensive survey on the future development of the Iron and Steel Industry in South Africa, Mr. Coetzee has also mentioned the direct reduction processes as a possible method of converting iron ore to iron. Mr. Coetzee has made it quite clear that at this stage one should not consider these processes as a 'magic formula' which herald a 'break through'. I agree entirely with this point of view. Once upon a time I held the opposite view, but in the meantime I have revised my views. To do so, I had 40 years at my disposal. In 1930 I had the privilege of being connected with the first commercial sponge iron plant in Germany1 - a plant which was capable of producing 40 tons of sponge iron a day. We were determined to prove that the blast furnace would become obsolete in the near future. We considered it as an unnecessary detour to convert iron ore first into an iron-carbon alloy, which contained further quite a number of undesirable elements, and to remove this carbon by an endothermic process. Direct iron-making seemed to be a logical short cut. Unfortunately, we were not able to establish this 'short cut,', but the life of our sponge iron plant was cut short. We had solved all technical but not the economic problems. Basically the positon is still the same today - mainly economic and to a lesser degree technological aspects determine the rate at which sponge iron plants are installed. More has been said and written than done about direct reduction plants. I think that there are two main reasons for this stagnation in the introduction of direct reduction processes. The first reason is that modern blast furnaces are just too good and too economic ever to be replaced by direct reduction processes on a large scale. This, of course, already limits the field of application for direct reduction plants. The second reason is that sponge iron production and utilisation is based on technical considerations, which increase not only the production cost of sponge iron but also the conversion cost to steel to such an extent that under special conditions only are direct reduction plants an economic proposition. Nuclear waste should be disposed with the best warranty for the national health and welfare. Among the several repository systems, the deep underground disposal is considered to be a most suitable system in Korean peninsula. However it demands basically the comprehensive stability analysis such as the behaviour of discontinuities in rock mass, the behaviour of ground water, and the reaction of rock stress according to the heat from the nuclear waste. For these purposes, the underground nuclear waste disposal repository was simulated in two- and three- dimensions. It shows that emphasis will be given to the thermal conductivity of discontinuities and the thermal convection of ground water as well as the thermal stress generated by the nuclear waste for design and construction of repository system, and they should be obtained from the field measurements. Déchets nucléaires devront tre déposés avec la meilleure garantie pour la santé et le bien public. Parmi les plusieurs systèmes de dépôt, la disposition en souterrin profond est considérée au système le plus approprié en Corée. Pourtant ce système demande essentiellement l’analyse éten-due de stabilité comme le comportement des discontinues en masse rocheuse, le comportement de l’eau souterrin et la réaction des contraintes de roche selon la chaleur depuis les déchets nucléaires. Pour ce but, le dépôt des déchets nucléaires en sous-sol a étè simulé en deux et trois dimensions. Il montre que l’accent sera donné à la conductivité thermale des discontinues et la convection thermale de l’eau souterrin aussi bien que la contrainte thermale générée par les déchets nucléaires pour le plan et la construction du systèmes de dépôt, et ils devront tre obtenus depuis les mesures sur place. Jedoch, es verlangt grundzätzlich die umfassend Stabilitätsberechnung so wie das Behnehmen mangelnder Konti-nuität in der Felsmasse, das Behnehmen des Grundwasser, und die Reaktion der Felsenbelastung nach der Hitze von der Kernwüste. Für diesen Zwecke, die unterirdische Wegferfenfundgrube der Kernwüste wurde in der zwei und drei Dimensionen gesimuliert. Es beweist daß die Betonung wird zur thermisch Leitfähigkeit mangelnder Kontinuität und thermisch Konvektion des Grund-wasser sowie die thermisch Belastung ergezeugt durch die Kernwüste für den Entwurf und die Konstruktion des Fundgrubesystem gegeben werden, und sie müssen von den Feldmaße ergelangt werden .

The spontaneous combustion of coal and the explosion of coal dust are two phenomena that were identified by the South African mining industry as requiring investigation. Research contracts were awarded to the G.P. Badenhorst Research Facility of the CSIR and the Department of Mining Engineering of the university of the Witwatersrand by the now defunct National Energy Council. Both projects entailed tests on numerous coal samples in specially designed apparatus. Since the completion of the project, attempts have been made to predict experimental results without incurring the cost of performing experiments. This paper describes predictive indices, based on routine laboratory tests, that were developed by the different research teams for their particular projects. A comparison of the results obtained by applying the spontaneous combustion liability index and the explosibility index to common coal samples indicates that, in general, propensity to spontaneous combustion and explosibility exhibit an inverse relationship. A brief overview is given of some major South African coal-mine disasters.

Change is endemic in our society. Future change will be accelerated by an explosion in technology, communication, and political thought. To meet these challenges, rapid structural changes have been taking place in mining organizations both here and abroad. The management of shaft-sinking projects is a case in point. Shaft sinking is a seminal element in the sustained well-being of a deep level mining venture. Its accomplishment is fraught with risk, involves a high level of capital expenditure, and is a precursor to profitable mining investment. The purpose of this paper is to present a concise and practical picture of the concepts, methods, and techniques of professional project management as applied to shaft-sinking projects.

The paper gives an assessment of the available data on the linear elastic fracture mechanics involved in stress corrosion cracking and in the behaviour of reactor pressure-vessel materials exposed to a simulated pressurized water-reactor environment. As a result of the different experimental techniques used in the various studies mentioned, only a few detailed conclusions can be drawn. The data from constant-displacement wedge-opening loading (WOL) tests, with the exception of one study, exhibited very limited or no crack extension during exposure periods of up to 14000 hours. The data from constant-load tests indicated evidence of crack extension, but the nature and extent of the crack extension are still unclear. When crack extension did occur, it was exclusively transgranular in nature. Certain differences in the available test data are tentatively explained in terms of the experimental procedures used, and the need for a consistent code of experimental techniques is highlighted.

An often overlooked factor in the analysis of mine layouts and schedules is technical operating flexibility, mainly due to its nebulous nature. If one glosses over technical operating flexibility the resultant mine layouts and schedules tend to be sub-optimal. The need to incorporate technical operating flexibility into the analysis and comparison of mine layouts and schedules is increasing in importance. This paper illustrates the nature of technical operating flexibility, reviews previous work on valuing operating flexibility and proposes how technical operating flexibility can be quantified for tabular reef mines by using a platinum reef deposit as a case study. Once technical operating flexibility is quantified it becomes possible to explore its incorporation into the analysis of mine layouts and schedules and subsequent optimization processes. The paper describes a CFD model developed for 76mm Dense Medium Cyclone (DMC) using Ansys Fluent Software to gain insights into the separation of particles according to their size and density. The simulation used in this paper includes the Reynolds stress model to predict the turbulence inside the cyclone body. An Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase CFD model was applied to model a number of physical aspects such as the separation of coal particles and the segregation of magnetite media solids. The experimental results generated in a laboratory scale DMC were used for the validation purpose and the predicted results of CFD have been validated for the flow splits of water, magnetite and coal. The simulation results obtained from the Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase model revealed that the prediction agreed with experimental results, and matched reasonably well in terms of the mass flow rates of water, magnetite and coal. Furthermore, the partition curve of the DMC when mapped for the separation of - 3.0+0.50 mm size also showed to be in agreement with the experimentally obtained curves. The gravity of cut (SG50), also predicted by the Eulerian-Eulerain multiphase CFD model, was found to be in the vicinity of observed experimental value of SG50.
