The very fact that the title was reworded to use the words 'fluctuating gold price' highlights the problem that faces the South African gold-mining industry.

The planned extraction of the No. 1 shaft pillar at Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mine highlighted a number of potential problems. In spite of the relative shallowness, careful thought had to be given to stope phasing owing to the detrimental effect of the anticipated geology and the fact that uninterrupted hoisting was necessary. Extensive use was made of computer modellig to design the stope phasing, determine the influence of regional support and to predict the direction and magnitude of displacements in the shaft. The paper describes the success of this design approach, and measured displacements in the stoping horizon and shaft barrel are compared to those obtained from the original computer model

The SORD Miner is a patented mining principle being developed to exploit mineral and energy resources that current technology can not access. SORD Miner is designed to operate in underground wet, granular, continuously collapsing geological environments such as alluvial and marine deposits. It is somewhat like a cutter suction dredge and should be capable of mining its way through any fine granular material like sand or gravel, pumping the slurry back to the surface. In areas where the target layer is covered, the SORD Miner is inserted below the water table and will tunnel its way to the mineral deposits at depth. This paper describes the development, concept testing and prototype construction of the SORD Miner.

The main sulphide zone (MSZ) of the Great Dyke is cryptic and without obvious stratigraphic markers. Although there are trends in the dimensions of the PGE and base metal profiles across the Hartley Complex, the profiles are invariant within a particular mining area. Ratios derived from these profiles are used to interpret diamond drill cores drilled ahead of underground development. Detailed logging of oriented core shows the exact position and attitude of intersected faults. Metal ratios are used to estimate fault throw to within 25 cm. It is possible to draw detailed sections showing the extent of ground disturbance well ahead of mining. Goode (President): South Africa is known for its sunshine and mineral deposits-especially its gold and its diamonds-and as this year marks the 75th Anniversary of the establishment of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, it is appropriate that I say a few words about mining and metallurgy and the part this industry and our Institute has played in the life of this country. Africa, as the Dark Continent, with its fascinating tales of Prester John, Ophir, Queen of Sheba and its myths and legends has throughout the ages fired the public imagination. Pharaoh Necho, 600 years before the birth of Christ, sent an expedition from Egypt around the Cape to probe this strange land. The gold for King Solomon's throne was said to come from Monomotapa-the country now known as Rhodesia. Centuries later the Arabs and Portuguese searched for this mineral wealth. The Arabs found little gold but unfortunately established a lucrative trade in black slaves. Now let us take a brief look into the closing stages of the Stone Age when the indigenous population of the lower portion of this continent consisted of the Bushmen, a nomadic hunting people who knew no metals and kept no stock, and the Hottentots who were a pastoral folk with cattle and sheep. Then somewhere about the 11th century the Bantu started their long migration southwards and brought with them the knowledge of smelting of iron ore. One of their settlements was here in Johannesburg on the Melville Kopje at Emmarentia. These people were the first miners and metallurgists on the Witwatersrand and the beautifully preserved iron smelting furnace constructed nearly 1,000 years ago is a tribute to their technical ability. This ability to use iron to make better spears for hunting or to fashion hoes for cultivating the soil led to their establishment as a superior tribe. The earlier Bushmen were pushed back to the inhospitable swamps and deserts and the Hottentots fled to the south. The Bantu also knew the art of copper smelting. In the days of the Dutch East India Company, at the end of the seventeenth century, Bantu workers brought copper from the north-west Cape to Simon van der Stel, but it was another two hundred years before the white man turned this to advantage. Stories of the Bantu mining gold spurred the early European hunters to travel deeper into the heart of Africa in search of wealth, and we are told that Karel Kruger, in 1834 whilst leading an ivory hunting expedition, discovered gold on the Witwatersrand, and took samples to Cape Town; but when he returned with a larger expedition a few years later his party was attacked by Moselekatze's Matabele near Potchefstroom. Kruger was killed and only the legend survived. The real spur to mining in this country was the discovery of diamonds in Griqualand West in 1867. The field seemed fabulously rich and diggers flocked to the scene from the four corners of the earth. With them came Cecil Rhodes, Barnato, Beit and some of the finest mining and financial brains the country had yet seen. These giant entrepreneurs were not tempted by the small deposits of gold in the Barberton and Pilgrim's Rest areas when these were made a few years later but

The organization and mechanized colliery management of a large by G. C. THOMPSON, B.Sc. (Min. Eng.) (Witwatersrand), M.B.L. (Member), and P. G. HENDERSON, B.Sc. (Min. Eng.) (Pretoria), M.B.A. (Member). Usutu Collieries Limited, at present the largest single producer of coal in South Africa, supplies Cam den power station. and produces 435 000 tonnes per month by conventional mechanized methods from bord-and-pillar workings in three mines. The thickness of the seams averages 2 metres, and the depth below surface varies from 15 to 150 metres. Each mine depends to a different extent on certain common facilities and services. Two of the mines are located on the same coalfield, and their rationalization would possibly be advantageous. Production policy is one of productivity with flexibility. The double-loader system is widely used, and one section at each mine is worked on single shift. Pillar extraction is practised where possible. In addition to lubrication and inspections, planned maintenance of mining equipment consists of sub-assembly replacements and overhauls. Conveyor and tractor/trailer transport is used underground. but trolley-wire locomotive haulage is being considered. The organization is such that co-ordination is relatively difficult, and certain changes could possibly improve the functioning of the engineering and mining departments. Technical and management training is carried out. Long-term planning will make use of a computer programme and will involve the investigation of other mining methods. Five-year and twelve-month plans are prepared, the planning of coal quality being based on the view that the mine and the power station together constitute a system. Control information systems make use of a remote computer terminal located at the mine. An improved integrated system is being investigated.

The wear of steel pipelines used for the transportation of backfill slurries is frequently regarded as an erosion problem only. An investigation was undertaken of the likely contribution to the total 'wear rate' made by corrosion. Use was made of a pipe flow loop with catholically protected specimens and corrosion inhibitors. Laboratory electrochemical tests utilizing a rotating-cylinder electrode were also conducted. The slurries used were classified tailings from two mines at a relative density of 1,7. The velocities were between 2 and 4,9 m/s. Substantial decreases in the wear rate of up to 80 per cent for one slurry and up to 67 per cent for the other were obtained with the use of corrosion control, showing that corrosion and, more importantly, interaction between erosion and corrosion, contribute a significant portion of the overall wear in steel pipelines

The proceedings of the Centenary Banquet that was held on Friday, 25 March 1994 at The Bal Room of The Carlton at 19:30 follow. Dr H. Scot-Russell The Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa-a forerunner of this Institute-was founded at a meeting held in Johannesburg on the 24th of March, 1894. One of the traditions established early in the life of the Society was the Annual Dinner, which became a major event in Johannesburg's social calendar. It was always attended by people of stature in the industry and in the community, and was usually addressed by a high-ranking Government figure. We are delighted that, on this one hundredth birthday of the Institute, we have been able to continue the tradition. I welcome you, Mr State President, and your charming wife, and we look forward to hearing your address later this evening.

ABSTRACT: In the south of the Island of Gran Canaria (Spain) there appear layers of swelling clays inside volcanic formations of a fonolitic type, down to depths as low as 500 m, with thicknesses of 1 to 3 m. Two tunnels (each of length 1,500 m) have been built in these zones (ignimbrites and swelling clays), work on which started in the ‘70s. The construction has been influenced by phenomena of expansivity and decompression. Presented below are the problems that arose, the field and indoor studies conducted and the numerical optimisation of the lining. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im Süden der Insel Gran Canaria (Spanien) kommen im Inneren vulkanischer Formationen phonolithischen Typs in Tiefen von bis zu 500 Metern 1 bis 3 Meter dicke Blähtonschichten vor. In diesem Gelände aus Schmelztuff und Blähton begann man zu Beginn der siebziger Jahre, zwei Tunnel von jeweils 1.500 Metern Länge anzulegen. Die Bauarbeiten standen unter dem Einfluss von Dehnungs- und Dekompressionserscheinungen. Der folgende Text enthält eine Darstellung der aufgetretenen Probleme, der durchgeführten Feld- und Laborstudien und der numerischen Optimierung der Tunnelauskleidung. RESUME: Dans le sud de l’Ille du Gran Canaria (Espagne) on a détecté des couches d’argile gonflante dans l’intérieur des formations de roches volcaniques fonolitiques, à la profondeur autom des 500 m, avec épaisseur de 1 à 3 m. The aspect ratio (mill diameter/mill length) of autogenous and semi autogenous mills varies widely and can be as high as three or as low as 0.5. The literature on the subject of what effect aspect ratio has on grinding mill performance or energy efficiency is almost non-existent. However, at the design stage of many grinding circuits the subject is often vigorously debated amongst metallurgists. In this paper the performance characteristics of mills with different aspect ratios are examined to determine whether process performance characteristics are a function of aspect ratio and whether high aspect ratio mills are any more or less energy efficient than low aspect ratio units. Data from both pilot and full-scale mills are used for this purpose in open and closed circuit configurations.

The first part of this paper describes the collection of barometric pressure measurements in a mine and their statistical analysis, which shows the effect of variations in barometric pressure, both on the primary emissions of methane gas into the workings (whether from fissures or from the surrounding strata), and on the flow of air to and from large unventilated, or poorly ventilated, areas. The second part of the paper deals with a study, based on computer simulations, of leakage flows of air into and out of sealed areas, and the reduction of such flows by the use of adequate seals.

Crankshaft driven piston and piston diaphragm pumps inherently generate a varying flow each crankshaft revolution. Depending on the system connected, this flow variation results in a pressure pulsation. This pressure pulsation may, depending on the structural design, result in structural vibrations. In order to limit the level of pressure pulsations, volume absorbing devices, mostly gas filled vessels, are used. The standard selection of these so-called dampeners is based on the flow variation of the pump but does not incorporate the interaction with the connected system. The paper discusses the application of a pulsation analysis tool developed by WEIR Minerals Netherlands, manufacturer of GEHO positive displacement slurry pumps. The paper first discusses the basics of pressure pulsation analysis, such as flow variation generated by crankshaft driven pumps, and hydraulic effects such as capacitance, inductance and resistance and their influence on the hydraulic response of a system. Furthermore, the relation between pressure pulsations and structural vibrations, known as fluid structure interaction, will be discussed. Additionally, the capabilities of the pump pulsation analysis tool are presented, illustrated by examples of simulation results and experimental verification.

In surface mining operations, ultra-heavy trucks operate on haul road networks which are typically from 10–40 km in length. Road networks for these vehicles have historically been designed and maintained empirically, relying heavily on local experience. Whilst it is possible to construct amine haul road that requires no maintenance over its service life, this would be prohibitively expensive, as would the converse but rather in terms of vehicle operating and maintenance costs. An optimal functional design will include a certain amount and frequency of road maintenance which can be planned, scheduled and optimized within the limits of required road performance and minimum vehicle operating and road maintenance costs. For existing mine haul road networks, which may not be optimally designed and maintained, the problem of identifying existing deficiencies, quantifying their impact and assigning priorities within the constraints imposed by limited capital equipment and manpower is problematic. This is reflected in the fact that most surface mine operators agree good roads are desirable, but find it difficult to translate this into an effective road maintenance system. The aim of this paper is to present a road maintenance management system which utilizes on-board truck diagnostic data in conjunction with computer-based truck dispatch systems. Through a comparative analysis of the various haul road maintenance systems available to a mine, a condition-triggered road maintenance system is introduced. System architecture, evaluation of real-time data, event trigger level determination, specific condition signatures and real-time rolling resistance calculation are discussed. Finally the event, activity, transaction and notification system is portrayed in conjunction with the determination of key productivity indicators and benchmarked road and truck performance. In 1999, INCO Limited Mines Research, in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, took delivery of a MeycoRobojet Logica Spraymobile, a computerized concrete spraying system. The Spraymobile is a self-contained mobile machine capable of applying spray-on ground support in underground applications. The Logica component of the Robojet is designed to control the operation of the Robojet, as well as scan and map the tunnel geometry prior to the spraying operation. The Robojet can be operated in various modes, from manual to automatic operation. In the automatic mode the computer controls the standoff distance, angle, and motion of the spraying jet. In 2000, INCO Limited, working with Meyco Equipment of Switzerland (a division of MasterBuilders Technologies), detailed a plan to create a tele-operation package for controlling the spraying process from a surface location at INCO's Mines Research Test mine. With the RobojetLogica operating in automatic mode, the operator at the machine becomes a process monitor. Since the Logica system controls the key spraying parameters of nozzle distance and nozzle angle to the sprayed surface, the operator could easily monitor and control the Robojet Logica from aremote location. The benefits of operating underground mobile mining (drills and LHDs)equipment from a surface location has been demonstrated at INCO Limited, however, the abilityto control a ground support operation (shotcrete spraying) from surface has not been attempted until now. This paper will describe the Spraymobile shotcreting system, the development of the tele-operation package for the Robojet Logica, as well as modifications to the original Spraymobile for implementing the tele-remote package on the Robojet Logica at the Mines Research test mine.

This paper describes a geostatistical study of the relative merits of diamond-saw sampling and conventional chip sampling, using results from experimental work carried out on Randfontein Estates Gold Mine and Western Areas Gold Mine. The diamond-saw sampling procedure is described, and it is concluded that this is a very efficient operation and leads to good-quality sampling that is clearly an improvement over conventional chip sampling. The study principally involved the computation of the errors of estimation of the mea gold value of mining panels for the two sampling methods, revealing that, in the normal production environment, the diamond-saw sampling method is a significant improvement over conventional chip sampling, as evidenced by the reduced estimation errors achieved. The question of optimum sample spacing is discussed, and it is concluded that the required spacing for chip sampling needs to be smaller than for the diamond-saw method.

High-temperature phase relations and thermodynamics of the condensed phase region of the Pb-S-O system at 1473 K were analysed by use of the available information. The sub-regular solution models on Pb-PbS and PbO-PbSO4 continuous melts were used in conjunction to generate a consistent set of thermodynamic and phase equilibrium conditions for the Pb-S-O system. The directions and distributions of conjugation lines between melts of this system were derived with relevant activity and composition data. The calculations permitted the thermodynamic analysis of direct lead smelting and the construction of isothermal reaction diagrams for the system in terms of oxygen and sulphur partial pressures at 1473 K.

The South African gold and platinum deposits were formed in very different ways and yet both have many similarities. They are flat dipping tabular ore bodies, extremely narrow and located in hard abrasive country rock. The mining methods employed are also similar. Primary access is via shafts or declines; secondary access is via haulages and cross cuts; and tertiary access is from raises. The proposed solution for rapid access described in this paper is focussed on the haulages, cross cuts and raises. The non-explosive rock breaking method has many other applications, however, it is the integration with the Tunnel Digging Machine that results in the first, cost effective, Continuous Tunnelling Machine for hard rock mining.

The various methods of detecting fires and heatings in collieries are reviewed. The methods described range from those relying principally on human senses to sophisticated methods employing infrared technology to detect traces of the products of oxidation and combustion. The advantages and disadvantages of various gases employed as indicator gases for the early detection of heatings and fires are discussed, and recommendations are made in this regard. The operation of a modern infrared carbon monoxide detection system is described, and the differences in operation and application of telemetric systems, tube-bundle systems, and up cast-shaft monitors are discussed In conclusion, some indication is given of the capital outlay required for typical early-detection systems.
