The objective of this study was to develop, install, and test a small underground mobile refrigeration plant (MRP) to deal with some of the real problems associated with mine cooling in an operating mine. The requirement for cooling the underground environment is discussed with particular emphasis on the need for this method of cooling, with the concomitant benefits. The research investigated current methods of cooling and reasons for previous failures in MRP. Both static and dynamic simulations were conducted to increase the confidence level under operating conditions. Implementation and testing, resulted in ?lessons learnt? requiring modifications, which are documented. Actual results have been recorded. These results have proved that significant cooling via MRP is feasible. Main benefits include positional efficiency, cost per kilowatt of cooling and cooling opportunities for remote hot areas of a mine. Finally, a proven technology is now available for large-scale implementation in the mining industry. Now the ventilation engineer has another system of cooling, which can be utilized in the quest to create an occupational environment, which meets the physical and mental health requirements of the worker.

n order to validate the borehole analysis valuation procedure commonly used in the South African gold mining industry, a simulated orebody was used to create borehole values which would serve as data for the procedure. After confirming the distribution, calculating the variance size of area relationship, estimating the block variance, and calculating a profit measurement for each set, comparisons were made to the known population parameters. Results show only one overall bias (in the estimation of the lognormal third parameter), which is carried throughout the analysis. The remainder of the analysis is unbiased, validating the procedure.

Published parameters from the Mufulira copper in situ leach (ISL) in Zambia are used for order-of-magnitude flow-rate calculations for an envisaged gold ISL in back-filled Witwatersrand stopes. A successful leach operation requires that the porous medium, usually a sand, has a hydraulic conductivity in excess of 5 x10-7m/second (i.e. a permeability >50 millidarcies).Empirical evidence suggests that average linear velocities would be of the order of 60 m/day if the backfill has the grain size of a fine sand. The proposed gold lixiviant would probably be an alkaline or ammonium thiosulphate, not cyanide. The resultant sulphate-rich ground and drainage waters could probably be processed using existing purification techniques to produce gypsum and magnesium/calcium carbonate. Within the next 100 years it is inevitable that solution mining will find widespread application on the Witwatersrand, if not for gold extraction, then certainly for water remediation purposes.

Until 2000, pricing involved profit taking and cost covering combined with limited global published information. Market information was mostly subjective in nature and large resource companies benefited exclusively from aggregated company information and data. The market constituted producers and consumers only. The nineties saw massive cost cutting drives and re-engineering initiatives and this underwrote the structural changes evident in the late 1990s? economy. This supported South African producers on the international FOB cash cost curve, and ensured profitable coal mining operations. As the debate on relative scarcity of fossil fuels ensued, producers and buyers looked to the developing terminal coal market for direction. The much needed direction was provided when the API coal indices were developed and derivative trading was embraced to include financial institutions, trading houses and hedge funds. The liquidity of coal trades increased rapidly and vastly and market information became obtainable on a daily basis. Interpretation of current and future coal prices became available to all market players and contributed to the sophistication of the market that is now able to participate in risk management of prices, capital expenditure and brownfield developments.

The phrase ?back to basics? is used to describe the fundamental principles and philosophies on which a successful mining operation is based. At Richards Bay Minerals (RBM), ?back-to-basics? (BTB) has been implemented as a continuous process to probe operational functions with a view to increase production without capital expenditure. It also ensures that the fundamentals of dredge mining are understood and adhered to. BTB is based on the principle that people drive organizations, necessitating an interactive implementation approach. At the RBM mine this entails a three-pronged approach, namely practical training, teamwork initiatives and the use of lean Six Sigma methodology. It is the latter on which this paper will focus. The lean Six Sigma methodology is successful in identifying, managing and documenting BTB projects, while team work initiatives are integral to successful project implementation. This paper describes two examples of how the Six Sigma methodology can be applied to a dredge mining operation. The first example focuses on the improvement of Mining Pond Echo (MPE) plant throughput by reducing the lost opportunity (non-production) due to tails downtime. The project was successful in increasing plant throughput by 4.5%. This was achieved by increasing the tails disposal system availability by running MPE as a four tails lines operation and focusing on causes of tails production downtime. Subsequently, the tails system at MPE is no longer the production bottleneck. Second, the Six Sigma methodology was successfully applied at Mining Pond Charlie (MPC) to increase the primary dredger throughput by 4.6% through focusing on the dredging technique and maintenance issues. This project highlighted the need for trend analyses to ensure an effective dredging technique, coupled with simple production documentation, which also ensures a focus on maintenance. Gold bearing deposits in the Witwatersrand consist predominantly of narrow tabular conglomerates with quartzite host rock. Extensive mining of these deposits at depth results in significant stresses being induced in the periphery of the tabular excavations. Where remnant pillars are created excessive stresses have resulted in the dynamic failure of the abutments. At the Hartebeestfontein Mine four brittle shear zones have recently been exposed and investigated. For most part, they represent abutment failure into the weaker hangingwall strata, striking parallel to the abutment, dipping towards the stope, with a sense of displacement consistent with closure of the stope from above. These shear zones are similar to those described in various publications by Ortlepp2: they are essentially brittle shear zones characterised by the presence of very finely comminuted ‘rock flour’ on an obviously freshly sheared surface. The angle between the shear zone wall and extension fractures indicate the sense of shear and the intersection of the extension fractures with the shear zone walls define a strong lineation normal to the direction of slip. It is suggested that these structures are referred to as ‘mining induced dynamic brittle shears’. Une exploitation poussée de ces gisements en profondeur a pour résultat l’apparition d’importantes contraintes induites à la périphérie des excavations tabulaires. Là où des piliers restants sont créés, des contraintes excessives ont eu pour résultat une rupture dynamique des appuis. Dans la Mine d’Hartebeestfontein, quatre zones fragiles de cisaillement ont été récemment exposées et étudiées. Dans la plupart des cas, elles représentent une rupture des appuis dans les strates moins solides de la paroi suspendue, orientée parallèlement à l’appui, inclinée en direction du chantier d’abattage avec une direction de mouvement consistante avec l’affaissement du toit de la galerie d’abattage. Ces zones de cisaillement sont similaires à celles décrites par Ortlepp2 dans diverses publications: Ce sont essentiellement des zones cisaillement fragiles caractérisées par la présence de « farine de roche » très finement réduite sur une surface évidemment fraîchement cisaillée. L’angle entre la paroi de la zone de cisaillement et les fractures de tension indiquent le sens du cisaillement et l’intersection des fractures de tension avec les parois de la zone de cisaillement définit une forte délinéation perpendiculaire à la direction du glissement. Il est suggéré que l’on se réfère à de telles structures comme des « cisaillements dynamiques fragiles induits par l‘exploitation ». Goldablagerungen im Witwatersrand bestehen überwiegend aus schmalen tabularen Konglomeraten mit Quarzitwirtgestein. Der umfangreiche Abbau dieser Ablagerungen in der Tiefe resultiert in signifikanten Drücken, die auf die Peripherie der tabularen Aushöhlungen wirken. Wo Restpfeiler hergestellt wurden, resultierten exzessive Drücke im dynamischen Versagen der Auflager. In der Hartebeestfontein Grube wurden kürzlich vier spröde Scherzonen freigelegt und untersucht. Zum größten Teil representieren sie Auflagerversagen im Stratum der schwächeren Stollenfirste, parallel zum Auflager verlaufend, in Richtung Abbaustelle abfallend, mit einem gewissen Grad an Verschiebung konsistent mit der Schliessung der Strosse von oben. Diese Scherzonen sind jenen ähnlich, die in den verschiedenen Publikationen von Ortlepp2 beschrieben werden: sie sind im Wesentlichen spröde Scherzonen, charakterisiert durch das Vorhandensein des sehr fein pulverisierten „Gesteinsmehls“ auf einer offensichtlich frisch abgescherten Oberfläche. Der Winkel zwischen der Scherzonenwand und den Bruchverlängerungen deutet die Richtung der Scherung an und die Kreuzung der Bruchverlängerungen mit der Abscherzone grenzt sich gegen eine starke Lineation normal zur Richtung der Lehne ab. Es wird vorgeschlagen, daß diese Strukturen als `vom Abbau verursachte dynamisch spröde Scherungen’ bezeichnet werden.

Western Deep Levels (North) is a deeplevel, longwall gold mine. Severe strata control problems and high rates of elastic closure, resulting in high rates of energy release, are associated with mining at depths of up to 3 500 metres. To assist in controlling these aspects of mine design and safety, a waste backfilling system has been designed and commissioned. The integration of such a system into an existing, producing longwall brings many problems of logistics, organization, planning and control. It is the purpose of this paper to examine these aspects of fill management, and to describe some of the practical problems involved with the integration of this project into the mining environment. Although many of the rock mechanics and soil mechanics aspects of backfilling systems are common there are specific problems involved which apply to longwall systems. Very strict guidelines are required for planning personnel to design their backfilling systems for a particular situation. These aspects are examined, and basic models developed which can be used without the necessity of comprehensive input from rock mechanics. A summary of the financial implications is included, and these are examined with regard to possible future applications and expansion of waste filling.

In the mining and metals industry, business strategy demands that leaders extract more from any set of capital assets. This improvement is achieved through a combination of continuous improvement and upgrading of the assets. Continuous Improvement involves a series of incremental changes in the workplace to stabilize the process, remove waste, and test the limits of process capability. Enhanced Technology involves the replacement of an existing as set with a different process or equipment, to achieve a similar function in a more efficient and effective manner. The paper compares and contrasts the two methodologies and outlines the key business considerations which dictate how and when to select one or other improvement method. The paper also addresses the implications for these two improvement methods for those undertaking R&D in support of the mining and metals business.

In the chloride process for TiO2 pigment production, various titania feedstocks (i.e. rutile, synthetic rutile, slag, and upgraded titania slag (UGS)) are chlorinated in a fluidized bed reactor with petroleum coke at temperatures between 1000°C and 1100ºC to yield gaseous metal chlorides. Although feedstock preference is largely based on TiO2 content, feedstock physical properties (i.e. density, sphericity, size distribution, and porosity) differ; these differences will affect fluidization behaviour and can inadvertently affect conversion efficiency. For example, a high carryover from the reactor reduces particle residence time and decreases conversion rates. Owing to dwindling rutile reserves in the world, most chloride producers are forced to feed blends of feedstocks to their chlorinators; and so it becomes important to understand whether blends have an effect on the hydrodynamic properties of the bed. This paper describes the physical characterization of different feeds and the determination of the elutriation constants for slag, rutile, synthetic rutile, and a blend (i.e. 50 wt% rutile, 50 wt% slag).A common feature of the tests was that particles finer than 75 µm tended more than any other size to be elutriated. The tested rutile, classified as a Geldart Group B material, had the lowest carryover, whereas the slags had the highest. Interestingly, the elutriation constant ([ki]) of the blend is lower than those of either of its individual components.

The West Wits Line first began yielding gold in the mid-1930s and is among South Africa's leading gold-producing areas. Gold mining operations are carried out amidst the occurrence of seismic events which cause both damage to underground excavations and injury and loss of life to production personnel. The feasibility of establishing a system to minotor the seismicity on all the Gold Fields mines was investigated during the early 1980s. This led to the establishment of a centralized seismic network in 1981. The system was structured around three major objectives. It uses Perkin Elmer (now Concurrent Computer Corporation) 16 and 32 bit mini-computers. The hardware in use at both the central and remote sites is outlined, giving a good insight into the role of computers in the system. The system software reveals the fast flow of data through the network; it can be divided into three categories: (1) data logging and transmission - remote sites, (2) data capture and communications - central site, (3) applications and research - central site. Several examples are given which show how the system is measuring up to its objectives. These case studies also indicate how the computers are effective in representing the seismic data collected. It is concluded that the use of computers enables the pin-pointing of seismic events on the West Wits Line within about 3 -4 minutes of their occurrence. The choice of hardware is largely dependent on the objectives of system, and the Gold Fields Network has chosen mini-computers because of the speed of communication and the large amount of data and storage required for research applications.

The monitoring of rock slopes is a common procedure in the management of hazards associated with slope instability. Slope stability radar has become widely accepted as the state-of-the-art method for management of hazards associated with unstable slopes in open pit mines. This is confirmed by the rapid adoption of the technology since inception in mid 2003, with over 70 GroundProbe slope stability radars now in use at open pit operations throughout the World. The use of a monitoring system such as slope radar to identify slope hazards is only part of the solution to minimise the consequences associated with slope instability. The presence of the hazard must also be effectively communicated to the mine personnel, so that the correct response to the hazard can be enacted, and the risk mitigated to an acceptable level. In some surface mines, due to the geotechnical characteristics of the rock mass, hazards can develop rapidly; with slopes progressing from stability to ultimate collapse in just hours. In these situations, it is vital that efficient systems are developed to evacuate the area of the pit affected. Such a system has been developed by GroundProbe in South Africa, with the vital driving force for the project being provided by the Anglo Platinum Mogalakwena mine operation based at Mokopane. The mine based development of the system was perceived as an essential aspect in the development of the successful system. From an early stage, the mine provided essential input on both hardware and software developments to allow the system to be rapidly integrated into the mining operation. This paper describes the pit evacuation alarm system that was developed and discussed the benefits obtained from a mine based development program.

Orebodies that contain more than one economically important mineral are generally evaluated by parametric cut-off grades. This approach often leads to mis-valuation of mineral deposits because cut-off grades are not based on the grades of each individual mineral and, because of the parametric formulation, are only indirectly related to the individual grade distributions. The only realistic approach is a formulation that accounts separately for each component mineral. The grid search method can be used as a means of multi-mineral cut-off grade optimization in this context. This paper describes the use of the grid search method in cut-off grade optimization for multi-mineral deposits. The authors introduce the general concepts of the method and formulate its application to cut-off grade optimization; they describe a software implementation of the method that can accommodate cut-off grade optimization for mineral deposits that contain up to three economic minerals. Introductory remarks Dr N. G. W. Cook: This paper was published in your Journal in May of this year and you will, therefore, have had the opportunity of reading it over the past six months. I can state that experience has shown that the paper is substantially correct, but a number of questions have to be answered. The first question, Mr President, that I would be happy to answer, is how is it that one is able to cut hard, abrasive quartzite with a strength some six times greater than that of good concrete? The essence of the answer is that there is a tremendous difference between abrasion, or scratching, and cutting, or chipping. For example, it is well known that a diamond will scratch or abrade almost anything. It is also relatively easy to chip, crack or crush a diamond. As a demonstration I have here an ordinary bench grinder, and with the bench grinder I also have a piece of tool steel. The wheel on this bench grinder is a silicon carbide wheel, which is an extremely hard material, and the tool steel is much softer. In rock-cutting we use tungsten carbide for cutting the quartzite. The quartzite and the tool steel have roughly the same hardness. You can sharpen tungsten carbide with a silicon carbide wheel. In fact, this is done. It won't surprise any of you, therefore, when I show you that tool steel can be sharpened with silicon carbide. Now, what I propose to do is to change the configuration of this experiment and use the soft tool steel to cut silicon carbide, and if I can do that, I think you will agree that I have gone some way to being able to cut quartzite, which is about as hard as tool steel, with tungsten carbide, which is harder than quartzite. Let me do this. (Demonstrates.) That, I think, is a very clear demonstration of how it is possible, with a metal, to cut an extremely hard and brittle material. What, essentially, is the difference that we have here? In the first case, I held the tool with a relatively low force against the hard silicon carbide wheel. This generated a relatively low average stress, which was insufficient to fracture the carbide wheel. Nevertheless the protuberances on the silicon carbide wheel indented the tool steel and abraded it at a multiplicity of points, and quickly reduced the section of the tool steel that I held against the wheel. By changing the configuration and clamping my tool steel in a firm post, against the silicon carbide wheel, I changed these conditions very extensively. I now had a high force. I had to exert a considerable moment on that lever. The tool was anchored so that it could sustain these high forces, and they generated high stresses, which were adquate to fracture the silicon carbide. Now, what about wear? It so happens that, in these two experiments I have just done, the power I was using was about the same-a small fraction of a horse power.

ABSTRACT: A fully dynamic, two dimensional, stability analysis of a highly discontinuous rock slope is demonstrated in this paper. The studied rock slope is the upper terrace of King Herod’s Palace in Masada, situated on the western margins of the seismically active Dead Sea Rift. The dynamic deformation of the slope is calculated using a fully dynamic version of DDA in which time dependent acceleration is used as input. The analytically determined failure modes of critical keyblocks in the jointed rock slope are clearly predicted by DDA at the end of the dynamic calculation. It is found however that for realistic displacement estimates some amount of energy dissipation must be introduced into the otherwise fully elastic, un-damped, DDA formulation. Comparison of predicted damage with actual slope performance over historic time span window of 2000 years allows us to conclude that introduction of 2% kinetic damping should suffice for realistic damage predictions. This conclusion is in agreement with recent results of Tsesarsky, Hatzor and Sitar (2002) who compared displacements of a single block on an inclined plane subjected to dynamic loading obtained by DDA and by shaking table experiments. Using dynamic DDA it is shown that introduction of a simple rock bolting pattern completely stabilizes the slope. RÉSUMÉ : On présente dans cet article une analyse bidimensionnelle complète de la stabilité d’une pente rocheuse très fracturée. La pente rocheuse étudiée est la terrasse supérieure du Palais du roi Hérode à Massada, située sur la rive Ouest du Rift sismiquement actif de la Mer Morte. La pente est constituée de blocs de dolomite raide présentant une stratification sub-horizontale et des joints sub-verticaux. La déformation dynamique de la pente est calculée en utilisant une version entièrement dynamique de l’Analyse de Déformation Discontinue (DDA) où l’accélération dépendant du temps est utilisée comme donnée. Les modes de rupture déterminés analytiquement des blocs clés dans la pente rocheuse fracturée sont clairement prévus par l’approche DDA à la fin du calcul dynamique. On trouve cependant, que pour obtenir des estimations réalistes du déplacement, il faut introduire un facteur de dissipation énergétique sans lequel la formulation DDA serait totalement élastique et sans amortissement. En comparant l’endommagement prévu avec les caractéristiques de la pente sur une période historique de 2000 ans, nous pouvons conclure que l’introduction d’un amortissement cinématique de 2% suffit pour obtenir de prévisions réalistes. Cette conclusion est conforme aux résultats récents de Tsesarsky, Hatzor and Sitar (2002) qui ont comparé les déplacements d’un bloc isolé sur un plan incliné sous chargement dynamique obtenus avec l’analyse DDA et à partir d’essais sur table vibrante. Der untersuchte Hang ist die obere Terrasse des Herodespalastes in Massada, welche in den westlichen Randgebieten des seismisch aktiven Toten Meer Grabens liegt.Die dynamische Deformation des Berghangs wird mit Hilfe einer vollstaendig dynamischen DDA-Version berechnet, in welcher als Input die zeitabhaengige Beschleunigung eingegeben wird. Die analytisch bestimmten Versagensarten kritischer Schluesselbloecke in diesem zerkluefteten Steinhang werden durch Anwendung von DDA am Ende der dynamischen Berechnung klar vorausgesagt. Es zeigt sich jedoch, dass fuer realistische Dislozierungs-Abschaetzungen ein gewisses Mass an Energieverlust in der sonst vollstaendig elastischen, ungedaempften DDA-Fassung einbezogen werden muss. Der Vergleich des vorhergesagten Schadens mit dem aktuellen Verhalten des Berghangs waehrend einer historischen Zeitspanne von 2000 Jahren erlaubt uns zu schliessen, dass ein Zusatz von 2% kinetischer Daempfung fuer eine realistische Vorhersage des Schadens ausreichen sollte. Diese Schlussfolgerung steht im Einvernehmen mit neuen Ergebnissen von Tsesarsky, Hatzor und Sitar (2002), welche die Dislozierung eines einzelnen Blocks auf geneigter Ebene unter dynamischer Belastung – unter Anwendung von DDA und “shaking table”-Versuchen – verglichen. Mit Hilfe der dynamischen DDA wird gezeigt, dass der Steinhang durch Anwendung einer einfachen Steinschraubenstruktur vollkommen stabilisiert werden kann.

This paper summarizes a behavioural safety project undertaken in seven quarries in the UK in order to investigate its applicability as a means of raising the standards of health and safety in the UK quarrying industry. A behavioural safety methodology was developed and trialed at two quarry sites in the UK. During the study the number of unsafe acts and minor accidents had decreased and at one of the quarries there was a 95% reduction in the number of working days lost. It was then introduced at a further five sites of varying sizes and within this focused specifically on lone workers as well as behaviours that affected quality and environmental issues. Positive improvements were noted in most of these operations. The project also looked at the effectiveness of health and safety performance indicators. Here, the common lead and trailing indicators for both safety and health that are commonly used by industry were identified. In consultation with the UK quarrying industry these were then used to identify specific performance measurement criteria that can be used by the quarrying sector to measure performance. Following on from this, a quarry specific health and safety management system specification was developed for large and small quarries.

Since the dawn of mining, pillars have been used as primary support to ensure stable workings. Early designs were based on trial and error, after which more scientific means developed over time. A vast amount of progress has been made, especially in soft-rock room-and-pillar design methodologies, from which hard-rock design theories developed with minor changes to constant parameter values. The commonly used Hedley and Grant method for hard rock and Salamon and Munro methodology for soft rock draw on the tributary area associated with the pillar, the width-toheight ratio of the pillar, and a back-analysed strength reduction factor. In these methods, only the vertical stress, or stress normal to the pillar influences the load applied to the pillar. This investigation considers the possible influence of shear stresses on pillars in a room-and-pillar layout in single reef planes and multi-reef environments, based on elastic numerical modelling methods. The possible shear stress poses a safety and financial risk to the design process, whereby an undersized pillar would lead to unstable working conditions, whereas oversized pillars could lead to an under-utilized ore resource.

The South African platinum mining industry is using a number of different mining methods, including variations of the same method, to extract the narrow reef tabular platinum deposits of the Bushveld Complex. These mining methods fall into three broad categories, namely conventional, mechanised and hybrid mining. A question sometimes asked in the industry is whether mechanized mining methods are more efficient than conventional mining methods. An objective answer requires the methods to be evaluated against multiple criteria simultaneously, whereby each criterion has a relative degree of importance in the overall decision. The most efficient method is the one that scores highest on each criterion. However, some of the criteria can be conflicting, such as by increasing dilution the shaft head grade decreases. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) methodology was selected for the study because it is used to solve problems of this nature. A survey was carried out to determine the relative importance of each efficiency criterion by drawing on the knowledge and experience of mine technical services and project management practitioners in the industry. Efficiency data for four different mining methods drawn from the Egerton (2004) study were used as a case study. The conventional mining method ranked as the most efficient mining method from the four methods considered. The exercise indicates potential for the AHP to be used in the South African platinum mining industry as a tool for selecting optimal layout designs, conduct regular evaluation of the performance of production shafts, or objectively evaluate line managers for promotion. The work described in this paper is part of the methodology used in a current PhD research study at the University of the Witwatersrand. Medium suspensions play an integral part in the successful application of dense medium separation for both static and dynamic separators. Although models exist to predict particle movement as a function of medium density and viscosity, these models have been derived on the assumption of Newtonian rheology. Viscosity measurements of medium suspensions have shown that they are non-Newtonian, with a yield stress, and as such cannot be used in the existing models. As a result, medium selection remains an art based upon practical experience and indirect measurements of viscosity such as stability and cyclone differentials.
