'Gee Whiz', a nationwide schools' science and technology competition, is being screened on SATY1 on Friday evenings at 18:00. Twenty-seven schools from al over South Africa are taking part in the series, which will run for 13 weeks. The participating schools were selected on the basis of their performance in the National Youth Science Olympiad and in Mintek's Minsa science competition, which has been organized on an annual basis since 1988.

Optimising the configuration of infill drill holes is an important step during mineral exploration campaigns. However, this optimisation process encompassing all possible drilling configurations within a mineral deposit is highly combinatorial and hard to solve in a reasonable time. This paper proposes using spatial clustering algorithms to divide the orebody into contiguous zones and target the best zones with infill drilling in order to reduce the size of this optimisation problem. Several clustering algorithms are assessed in a spatial context on hypothetical datasets. This evaluation shows that the hierarchical density-based spatial clustering application with noise (HDBSCAN) algorithm can be used in combination with the uniform manifold approximation and projection (UMAP) dimensionality reduction algorithm to identify contiguous zones in the orebody.

We show that the prioritization of business improvement and performance management decisions may be significantly improved by taking into account the systemic effects of changes made in a single process area. To do so we build a model of a mining value chain, taking into account consequential downtime that arises from downstream and upstream starvation and choking effects of each activity. Introducing the concept of internal capacity, this approach yields insight into the relative importance of key metrics such as loading and hauling rates. We suggest that a holistic view of this type should be a core component of business improvement and performance management decisions.

Dr T. F. Muller (Honorary President): "Mr President, gentlemen. May I congratulate the Institute on its 75th birthday, and your President on his comprehensive review of the Institute's 75 years. It is an interesting commentary on the affairs of the Institute that your President should refer to a speech made by a founder member 25 years ago on the occasion of your 50th Anniversary and then say there is no need to repeat what was given there, but that he would confine his remarks to bringing the Institute's history up to date. To me this suggests a remarkable continuity of thought and ideals-a welcome island of stability in an ever-changing world. One can somehow picture another future President, perhaps one of the younger and tougher members here today, doing the same thing in 25 years when you celebrate your centenary-and again someone doing the same in the year 2094 when your Institute is 200 years old! I hope they will recognise their debt to the early pioneers of the Institute gathered here today. In any event, this review of the fine achievements of the past 75 years is certain of an honoured place in the annals of the society. Here is a record of the onward march of technology in South Africa and a tribute to a long line of mining engineers, of chemists, metallurgists and geologists who made a greater contribution to the well-being and the prosperity of South Africans than South Africans generally are aware. Your Institute started off as a 'gold and cyanide club', peopled largely by chemists and metallurgists who made a signal contribution to the industry from the earliest times. Despite the addition to their ranks of ever-growing numbers of mining engineers, the metallurgist members have continued to make notable contributions. One recalls, for example, the manner in which they rose to the occasion to resolve the problems associated with the establishment of the uranium industry in this country. The creation of a major industry based on the existence of low grade uranium ores in the conglomerate reefs of our low grade goldfields is a classic example of the manner in which a new large industry can be rapidly created through the combined endeavours of all concerned. I noted with pleasure your remark, Mr President, that members of the Institute would like to keep up to date with recent progress in nuclear fuel matters and that members should be given the opportunity to study developments in their journal. I am sure that the National Institute of Metallurgy which conducts fuel research on behalf of the Atomic Energy Board and of the Uranium industry, and NUFCOR, which co-ordinates the uranium research programme, would be glad to co-operate if invited by the Institute to make periodical contributions to its journal. You have referred to the building up of our research organization and its dynamic approach to mining problems. I understand that the expenditure of the mineral industries on research exceeds one-third of the entire research expenditure of the private sector. South Africa is in the forefront of mining development and the focus of world attention is on the achievements of our scientists and mining engineers. We can look forward to continued advances in mining technology based on their vision and expertise. I share your disappointment, Mr President, that the Base Metals Division has ceased to exist; and that there is a resultant dearth of papers offered to the Institute on these important sections of mining and metallurgy. We are seeing some remarkable developments in the mining and beneficiation of base minerals, and it is in this area that I see the greatest potential for future expansion. JoughinProduction planning is a subject that lies at the interface between the computing centre and mine management. Discus¬sion during this session was thus largely concerned, directly or indirectly, with communication between computing and mining personnel, and as such was relevant to the symposium as a whole.Mr A. Weiss set the tone of this discussion by referring to `user-orientated systems'. He congratulated Mr Burne in this regard, pointing out that his long-term production scheduling program, as a computer system, was similar in approach to the manual system it replaced, and was therefore easily understood by planning engineers. He asked whether the schedule engineer had his 'hands on' the system, to which Mr Burne replied that the engineer did in fact spend several days running alternative schemes through the computer. Mr Weiss commented on the advantage of having terminals on site for this sort of engineer-computer interaction. He also commented on the flexibility of Mr Burne's approach to scheduling and how preferable this was to a one-step optimization package. This was brought home by a question from Mr H. D. Small: Mr Burne's program sometimes found it necessary to temporarily halt an advancing face, and he asked whether the logic of the program could be altered to avoid this (e.g. by suitably slowing down the rate of face advance). Mr Burne replied that it was in fact easier for the planning engineer to sort this problem out manually. The way in which the computer results were presented made it particularly simple for the production engineer to see how to avoid or remedy a stopped face.On the technical side, both Mr Weiss and Mr H. M. Wells questioned Mr Burne on the handling of grade control by his program. From answers by Mr Burne and his colleague Mr K. H. Thomson it emerged that a spot-check on grade every now and then was all that was necessary at Mufulira, and that the idea of actual grade control was more a question of short-term than of long-term planning."

Ticor South Africa operates a dry mill at the town of Empangeni in the province of KwaZulu-Natal on the east coast of South Africa. The dry mill processes a non-magnetic mineral stream constituting rutile, leucoxene and zircon as major minerals, and minor quantities of ilmenite and other non-valuable minerals. For plant control and optimization, continuous ‘real time’ information about the mineral and chemical compositions in various plant streams is required. The current practice is to take samples at regular intervals and submit them for mineralogical(grain counting) and chemical analyses. However, these methods are time consuming, and in the case of manual grain counting, tedious and operator dependent. Until now an on-line or real-time instant mineral quantification system, which will be of great value in a plant operations environment, has not been available. Blue Cube Systems has developed a mineral quantification system using spectral mineral analysis. It measures and quantifies the composition of mineral samples instantly, providing consistent data in real time. A series of process stream samples from the dry mill mentioned above were used to evaluate the Blue Cube Systems instant mineral quantifier. This article will •describe the procedure of setting up and evaluating the Blue Cube Instant MineralQuantifier equipment •present its results, and •discuss the intended applications.

Splaine, in opening the discussion on Mr Perlman's paper, asked whether the model, as fitted by data up to 1963, predicted the rise in the price of copper in 1967, and whether the model could be used to capitalize on short-term price fluctuations.Answering the second question first, Mr Perlman said that the horizon used is six months to one year. In the very short term the activities of speculators obscured the effect of the fundamental econometric variables. This effect, however, was removed if one moved to a longer term, say, quarterly. In 1963 the model had predicted a price rise in 1964 and 1965 and a drop in price in 1966. The rise in 1967 had been caused by a strike, and imponderables such as large strikes were difficult to include in the model since they were unpredictable. Model simulation can be used to show the effect of strikes on price and the effect of small strikes is small.Mr B. R. van Rooyen said that because models are both calibrated and tested on historical data a bias was introduced which gave rise to an overoptimistic estimate of the accuracy of the forecasts. To this Mr Perlman replied that there seemed to be no alternative to the use of historical data for calibrating and testing models, and thus little hope of avoiding the bias. A second point made by Mr. van Rooyen was that manage¬ment tended to be suspicious of complex models and that frequently more heuristic models were sufficiently accurate and preferable for investment decisions. He added that if management were not involved in the model building the econometrician might easily go astray, Mr Perlman replied that symbiosis between data analysts and users of the model was essential and that the experience of the practitioner must be reflected in the model.Mr M. R. Fuller-Good remarked that a clear understanding of future price trends was essential for effective capital planning, and asked, first, how one went from the compiled data on supply and demand to the determination of their effect on price, record, whether necessary data, for example, capacities, could be obtained timeously, and, third, when strikes restricted supply, whether stockpiling by consumers induced large price fluctuations."

Professor D. Howat (President) was in the chair. He then thanked the authors for providing pre-prints of the papers. After the President had concluded his opening remarks, he asked Professor J. de V. Lambrechts to act as Colloquium Chairman for the day and he, in turn, introduced the three Session Chairmen namely, Dr A. Whillier (Chamber of Mines and President of the Mine Ventilation Society); Mr M. Barcza (Managing Director, Corner House Laboratories); and Mr L. W. P. v.d. Bosch (Chief Consulting Engineer, Union Corporation). The following papers were presented: "Fan efficiency investigation on mines of the Union Corporation, Ltd." by J. A. Drummond. Published in the Journal Feb. 1972. "The design of underground cooling towers" by A. Whilliel'. Published in the Journal, Oct. 1971. "Some aspects of the design of cooling plant installations" by R. Hemp. Published in the Journal, Nov. 1971. "The planning of ventilation and refrigeration requirements in deep mines" by D. F. H. Grave and R. M. Stroh. Published in the Journal, Dec. 1971. "Cooling power of underground environments" by D. Mitchell and A. Whillier. Published in the Journal, Oct. 1971. At the conclusion of the three technical sessions the Symposium Chairman commented as follows, indicating that he would prepare a written summing up at a later stage: "The tone of the colloquium has had a sincerely practical note about it. It would have been a pity if the ventilation experts talked only theory and little practice. This practical theme has, I am sure, made the colloquium interesting to both ventilation men and others whose daily tasks do not touch so closely on this fascinating subject. This practical theme was in evidence through all the papers and contributions. Some of you may have felt that there was not enough emphasis on the word 'economics' as advertised in the broad title of the colloquium. I do not think this was really a valid criticism because as someone said 'it all boils down to Rands in the end!' So whether it was a case of low fan efficiency, poor design of cooling towers, wrong planning or low human efficiency due to high heat stress. . . it all boils down to money saving and therefore economics, whenever improvements are forthcoming. The title of the colloquium was thus not misplaced. The views of senior mining men on the production side are appreciated. Let us say that this exchange of views between ventilation engineers and those who have to take the final decisions and spend the money, should prove to be most rewarding." Professor Lambrechts finally thanked the Session Chairmen and everybody who had helped to make the colloquium a success and the meeting closed at 4.0 p.m. In a subsequent written summing up, the Colloquium Chairman gave the following as his impressions of some of the highlights which emerged from the papers and discussion thereof: (The names indicate the authors only). Drummond: It was hinted that the time had arrived to consider the introduction of a South African fan test code which would be better suited to local conditions than the currently acknowledged B.S.S. code which, however, is seldom enforceable in practice. In this connection also, there was prominent reference to the thermodynamic approach of McPherson. Wide variations in the quality of maintenance of, and repair work on, fans were stressed. It was mooted that ventilation engineers responsible for estimating the basic duty specifications for large fans, frequently played safe by overestimating the pressure required, thus ensuring that there would not be a shortfall in air volume delivered. Mechel, a large, integrated steel, stainless steel, and ferroalloy producer in Russia is committed to upgrading its facilities to world class pyrometallurgical process and environmental practice. Yuzhural Nickel currently uses shaft furnaces to produce a matte containing iron, nickel and traces of cobalt. This rather old technology is thermally inefficient and is characterized by high operating costs. Mechel has investigated suitable equipment and processes to upgrade the plant, and awarded a contract for the construction of a 12 MW DC smelter, located near the town of Orsk, to Bateman Engineering Projects in June 2008. The selection of DC furnace technology for laterite smelting can be considered as a strategic highlight for the pyrometallurgical treatment of low-grade lateritic ores, and could be the first industrial-scale implementation of this technology. This project has been designed to achieve multiple goals including the demonstration of the process and associated equipment technology at commercial scale, to confirm the scale-up design parameters of the forthcoming 2 x90 MW, twin electrode DC furnaces, and to prove the environmental emission superiority of closed furnaces. It also provides a valuable operator training platform. This paper deals with the process design, key technology building blocks and design features which have been incorporated to produce a pyrometallurgical vessel capable of (i) resisting slag superheat and chemical aggressiveness, (ii) process fine material without pre-agglomeration, (iii) achieve high nickel recoveries and(iv) being tolerant to the variations in chemical composition of laterite ore. The approach to increasing campaign lives between partial and complete rebuilds, through the use of composite furnace module (CFM) technology originally developed and patented by the University of Melbourne, is also followed in more detail. Unfortunately, results from hot commissioning and lessons learned from initial operation are not available because the project completion has been delayed due to the worldwide downturn in demand for commodities. The land disposal of voluminous fine-grained tailings from the processing of mined ore bodies poses a long-term risk to the surrounding environment and local communities, while also representing a loss of valuable natural resources; including water, land and mined minerals. To date, the development and practical implementation of alternative approaches and technologies for removing risk and reducing the burden associated with these wastes, particularly in South Africa, remains limited, and value recovery is largely limited to the extraction of precious metals. To this end, researchers at the University of Cape Town have developed a programmatic multi-phased approach to explore and develop opportunities for the valorisation of large-volume mine wastes, based on the innovation value chain. This paper outlines this conceptual approach and presents key outcomes from its application for the specific case of sulfide-bearing coal processing wastes from South African collieries. Through the application of a combination of qualitative and quantitative tools and methodologies, a number of potentially viable opportunities and processing routes for value recovery and bulk re-purposing of these wastes have been identified and tested on a laboratory scale. Studies have, however, also shown that there are several technical and non-technical factors currently constraining commercial application of these opportunities. Overcoming these constraints will require a commitment to innovative waste management approaches and effective multi-sectoral collaboration. The minerals industry is represented through employers, employees, government, education, research, public views, and even pure political interests. The role of the Institute is to represent the mining and metallurgical profession. In this role the Institute has aligned itself with Associated Scientific and Technical Societies, the Council of Scientific Societies and the Engineering Association. The Institute is also active on the Engineering Council of South Africa.

"I have been involved in the refractory industry for many years and at some time or another I have designed materials, tested materials, manufactured materials, installed materials, in fact I have done everything except actually chemically analyzed a refractory material.So I would not even begin to tell you how to analyse a refractory material. I'm sure everyone here knows more about chemical analysis than I do.However you could regard me as a customer with and perhaps the insights I have developed may help in putting the role of chemical analysis in the Refractories into perspective.For a start, let's take a step back and ask why we test refractories. The refractories handbook of the American Foundry Association gives four reasons:1. To determine appropriate specification.2. For quality control, to ensure conformance to specifications.3. To provide special property information not available elsewhere.4. This presentation describes a technique under development referred to as Selective Blast Mining. The technique involves millisecond sequential blasting. It applies to mines where the gold bearing conglomerate band is clearly demarcated, and separated from the waste rock in the foot and hanging wall. The width of the conglomerate band should be less than ± 0,7 metres. A research program was initiated in August 1994 by Drs RE. Robinson and I.E. Bock. The objectives were to develop new blasting methods that can reduce: ? the losses of gold in narrow reef stoping. Losses of gold can be as much as 10-15% ? and to introduce selective mining to reduce ore dilution with waste rock.

The South African democratically-elected government instituted policies and legislation that are intended to bring about change and transformation in the country and have drastically affected different industries, among others, the mining industry. The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA) and the Broad-based Socio-economic Empowerment Charter (Mining Charter) were introduced in order to redress previous inequalities and to promote women's employment in the mining industry. This research evaluates the practical implementation of the MPRDA and the Mining Charter with specific reference to women in underground mining. A quantitative research paradigm was used. Data were collected through a process of a face-to-face interview surveys utilizing a structured questionnaire. The research setting was limited to the platinum-mining industry in the area of Rustenburg in the North West Province. The study population consisted of 195 available women working undergound at the mine. It is clear from the findings that mining companies are facing major challenges in their attempt to incorporate women in underground mining activities. Company policies regarding these issues must be firmly in place; however, the challenge lies in the translation of these policies into practice. In this regard, managers will have to play a leading role in the successful phasing in of women into the underground mining arena.

In South Africa, diamonds are mined predominantly in rural areas. Kimberlitic diamonds dominate in Limpopo and the Northern Cape Provinces whereas alluvial diamonds are mainly sourced from the North West and Northern Cape Provinces. There are a few large and medium sized diamond companies (De Beers, Petra Diamonds, Trans Hex, Rockwell and Alexkor). There are many smaller companies involved in diamond mining, mostly alluvial diamond mines. The nature of alluvial diamond deposits is that they are aerially more extensive and thus their surface impacts are more pervasive: The recent downturn in diamond prices has resulted in the sudden cessation of mining at many small and medium diamond operations. Comminution is a critical stage of mineral processing which aims to reduce the size of ore particles through breakage, consequently increasing the likelihood of liberation of valuable minerals. Several factors, such as pre-existing cracks, mineralogical composition and particle size, are known to affect ore breakage behaviour. While investigating the contributing role of each factor is essential to improve understanding of breakage, isolating individual factors by experiment is typically impractical. Numerical techniques such as the Bonded Particle Model-Discrete Element Method (BPM-DEM) have been developed as a means of studying closely controlled breakage conditions. This study evaluates this technique in modelling the effect of pre-existing cracks breakage behaviour for synthetic ore specimens during impact breakage in a short impact load cell (SILC). Synthetic ore was modelled as a collection of discrete entities connected by brittle-elastic beams. Model parameters were calibrated against macroscopic material properties of a conventional homogenous synthetic ore. The extent of pre-existing cracks within specimens was prescribed by varying discontinuities between the connecting entities. An approach with the insertion of seed points was used to model the mineralogy of the specimens. Results showed that pre-existing cracks resulted in a decrease in the fracture force as the crack density increased. Additionally, the irregularity of fracture patterns within rock specimens after impact became more apparent as the crack density increased. The findings were used to emphasise some of the attributable causes of the variation observed between ore hardness characterisation tests and in situ ore behaviour. Contributions to discussion V. E. Marting (Associate Member): The authors of this paper should be congratulated in having pioneered the application of the Sharapov predictor to local data, and in having made a valuable contribution to South African experience in the quantitative treatment of geological information using a digital computer. Although the existing set of three programmes has been described as a 'suite' it does not represent an integrated system in the accepted sense since the communication between runs is made in the form of punched card files to enable the mining engineer to exercise discretion and control over the data entered at each phase. Although the authors are justifiably proud of the successful results obtained through the application of this method, I feel that it is my duty to comment that the computer aspect of the work has not reached full development and is deserving of the financial support needed to increase its widest usefulness. At the present moment a routine to detect 'missing information' has not been commissioned. Due to the lack of documentation the use of the programmes is restricted since the format for the submission of data is known only to the authors. It is very unlikely that a profitable return on the development costs will be enjoyed before the programme is fully documented and made available to wider use. My criticism of the present incomplete state of the work is being voiced purely with the intent of focussing on the significance of this project and the fact that it is deserving of development on an industry basis. It should be noted that at the economical cost of R4.00 per sq ft of computer print-out, a mining engineer can hardly afford to miss the opportunity of using the programmes on other (e.g. metalliferous) mineral deposits of tabular formation. Since the publication of this paper I have had an opportunity to see the results of the programmes developed by Drs M. D. G. Salamon and F. Deist for designing bord and pillar workings. The basic data for these latter programmes are extracted from iso-line plans drawn conventionally by geologists, a task that could be considerably expedited through the use of Mr Hawkins' programmes. It appears that the efforts of these respective teams are complementary and it is in the interests of the industry that these individual components should eventually form part of an integrated system. E. Margo* (Member): This paper is a good example of how and where the backroom scientist-in this case the mathematical statistician-can aid the mining engineer to develop not only more accurate means for dealing with valuation problems but to develop a tool that can also cope with changed geological specifications.

High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are mostly used prior to pelletising processes to increase the specific surface area (SSA) of iron ore concentrate. For expressing SSA, the Blaine index is utilised as one of the most important dimensional properties of iron ore pellet feed. ISO 21283 is a standard test method that explains the manual of Blaine air-permeability apparatus for determination of this parameter. In this standard, the disaggregation method is based on passing the minus of 1 mm samples from the 0.150 mm sieve. The disaggregation process has an effective role on the results of Blaine airpermeability test especially for regrinding HPGR products. In this research, firstly the Blaine index of samples was measured without disaggregation. Following this, disaggregation was done by passing the minus of 1 mm samples through three sieves with different dimensions, 0.150, 0.090 and 0.045 mm, separately, and the Blaine index was calculated for each one. Finally, lab-mill with rubber balls, called Jar mill, was investigated as another option. Screen analysis and image analysis with SEM were performed to evaluate the effects of the sample's disaggregation on the size distribution and agglomeration of samples. The results showed that the disaggregation method with sieve size 0.150 mm, according to ISO 21283, was not applicable for HPGR products because the particles were still stuck together. In addition, the disaggregation method with the sieve size 0.045 mm or with Jar mill offered reasonable results. Fugitive dust from mineral extraction and processing activities can significantly influence air quality, the environment, and the health and quality of life of workers and surrounding communities. Poor engagement and communication between experts and lay persons, disciplinary silos and polarised viewpoints have made it difficult to develop a holistic understanding of the complex health issues associated with environmental emissions of mine dusts, and consequently to design meaningful and integrated approaches to address such issues. The collaborative Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Mine Dust and Health Network, hosted by Minerals to Metals at the University of Cape Town, serves as a collaborative think-tank to inform research directions within and across disciplines, government policy and regulations, health monitoring programmes at public clinics, industry best practice, community healthcare and impact prevention programmes. It focuses initially on the southern African region, but with the intention to expand to mining-intensive developing countries within the rest of Africa, South America and Asia. This paper outlines the approach and activities of this global transdisciplinary and intersectoral network and presents some of the key outputs and achievements to date.
