RMR, Rock Mass Rating, is one of the famous rock classifications. However, RMR was proposed empirically and absolutely depends on the experience of engineer. Therefore, engineering verification is needed for RMR system itself. In this study, the factor analysis and the multiple regressions were performed in order to evaluate the validity of rating factor of RMR. Also numerical analysis was carried out using the FLAC based on Taguchi method, a kind of robust designs, in order to examine the support of tunnel corresponding to the revaluated RMR. As the result of the analysis new RMR was proposed with five minimized factors of intact rock strength, RQD, spacing, persistence and roughness of discontinuities. RMR est un des procédés de la classification du roc qui sont généralement utilisés. Mais RMR s'appuie sur l'expérience et se absolument soumet à l'expérience d'ingénieur. Il est donc nécessaire de vér- ifier techniquement sur le système de RMR. Dans cet étude, on met à exécution l'analyse du facteur et la régression multiple pour évaluer la convenance de la cause de classification de RMR. De même, pour évaluer le support du tunnel selon RMR réestimé, on a exécuté l'analyse de la valeur numérique par FLAC qui se base sur la lois de Taguchi, laquelle est une sorte de système du plan robuste. Selon le résultat de la régression multiple, il est proposé de nouvel RMR à partir de l’intensité de roc intact, RQD, l'espacement, la persistance et la rugosité RMR ist eine der weit benutzten klassifikationen fuer die felsenstuecke. Da aber RMR erfahrungs- maessig ist und ueberwiegend von der persoenlichen Erfahrung eines Ingenieurs entschieden ist, ist es mit Sicherheit notwendig, das RMR-system selbst technisch zu ueberpruefen. In diesem studium waren die faktorenanalyse und mehrfachregressionanalyse durchgefuehrt, um die gerechtigkeit der klassifikationenfaktoren von RMR zu bewerten. Ferner war noch eine numerische analyse mit ben- utzung von FLAC aufgrund der Taguchi-methode, eine art technik der robust design, eingefuehrt, um die tunnelstuetze infolge der neubewertung von RMR unterzusuchen. Gemaess der mehrfach regression analyse wurde eine neue RMR, die sich aus 5-eingeschraenkten faktoren wie intact rock strength, RQD, spacing, persistence und roughness von discontinuities zusammensetzen, in vorsch- lag gebracht

The perception exists in many organizations that, once an energy management system is employed, there need not be any further adjustments to such a system. This is not true, as the field of energy management is a dynamic field, and constant feedback and adjustments are needed to enhance the efficiency of a system to the point that substantial pay-back can be obtained. It is stressed that for any energy management system to be successful, careful planning should permeate through the organization, from the top level decision-makers to the workplace. This paper describes a dynamic technique by which energy management strategies can be evaluated by viewing the effects of the strategies on the organization as a whole.

After bench-scale and pilot-plant tests in which it was shown that wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) can achieve good recoveries of gold and uranium from Witwatersrand residues, a production size machine was installed at a gold mine. The mechanical and metallurgical performance of this machine have been satisfactory, and the economics of the process are attractive. WHIMS can be combined with other unit operations like flotation for the optimization of overall gold and uranium recoveries. This concept is shown to be relevant, not only to operations for the retreatment of tailings, but to processes for the treatment of coarser material. In the latter, there is a saving in energy consumption compared with the energy required for the fine grinding of the total feed, and a material suitable for underground backfill can be produced. Improved. more cost-effective WHIMS machines currently under development are also described.

As the orebodies become more complex and lower grade, there is an increasing demand from crushing circuits for a finer product. When the product from a crushing circuit does not satisfy the requirements of the downstream processes, the cost of production increases. Thus, enhancing the performance of cone crushers through optimisation of their operating factors becomes important. One of the key factors affecting performance of cone crushers is the filling of the crushing chamber during the operation. The effect of varying the filling of the crushing chamber of a cone crusher was investigated. To assess the crusher performance, parameters such as crusher capacity, power utilisation, and reduction ratio were used. Extensive plant trials were conducted to obtain samples and operational data when the crusher chamber was 50% full (half-full) and 100% full, which is 300 mm above the top of the crusher chamber (super-choked condition). The results indicated a 62% difference in the crushing capacity when the crusher was operated in a super-choked condition compared to the half-full chamber level. In the super-choked condition, the size-specific energy at 12.7 mm was 20 % lower than that of the half-full condition. The Bond ball mill work index (BBWI) of crusher product indicated that the BBWI of the product of the super choked condition is 5.6% less than that of the product of half-full condition. This can be attributed to the generation of micro cracks in particles due to increase in the interparticle breakage when the crusher was operated in the super-choked mode. This paper describes some aspects of the planning of a new colliery which commenced production in the Middleburg district in 1966. An account is given of some of the problems encountered in the early years of operation and of what was done to solve them. The conclusion is reached that design of plant and machinery should be flexible to permit multiplication of units.

Rand (Member) Recent studies have shown that the overall extraction of gold from Witwatersrand ores is increased as the proportion of gold reporting to the amalgamation circuit is increased. Testwork has therefore been carried out with a view to improving recovery by gravity concentration. In this paper, the history of gold recovery by gravity concentration is reviewed, and methods and machines at present in use are briefly described. The results of plant and laboratory tests are presented, and the limitation of existing concentrators is discussed. A pilot plant is being built for the testing of improvements to the existing concentrators and of several new devices, particularly the Reichert-cone concentrator.

"Peirce-Smith converters (PSCs) are extensively used in the copper, nickel, and platinum group metals industries to remove iron and sulphur from the molten matte phase. This technology has not changed significantly since its inception in the early 20th century. The typical converting operation involves lateral purging of air/oxygen-enriched air into molten matte through a bank of tuyeres. This blowing operation occurs at low air pressure from the blowers, and the induced bubbling regime is considered inefficient from both a process and an energy utilization perspective. Inherent drawbacks include recurrent tuyere blockage, inevitable tuyere punching operation to clear airways, and low oxygen efficiency as a result of substantial air losses due to leakages.Investigations in the 1980s demonstrated1 that jetting into Cu and Ni converters could reduce or eliminate some of the process difficulties. In spite of these findings, very little progress has been made in the application of these concepts for converting of non-ferrous melts on a commercial scale.As part of its operational improvement and energy reduction initiative, Western Platinum embarked on a full-scale industrial evaluation of generating a jetting regime by using sonic injection. Prior to full-scale industrial evaluation, a numerical assessment was conducted to ascertain the feasibility of implementing sonic injection on Lonmin converters. The work included flow characterization at high injection pressures achieving sonic velocity at the tuyere exit. The 2D and 3D simulations of the three-phase system were carried out using the volume of fluid (VOF) and realizable k- e turbulence models to account for the multiphase and turbulence nature of the flow, respectively. These models were applied using the commercial CFD numerical code FLUENT.This paper discusses the key findings regard ing understanding of gas plume extension, velocity distribution, shear wall stress analysis, and phase distribution characteristics in the system. Plant trials are also discussed with reference to the commercial aspects of a fullscale implementation of sonic injection in the smelter."

In mine production scheduling problems are well-known, where most are categorised into deterministic and non-deterministic NP-hard problems because of their complexity. Many researchers have attempted to solve the problem by applying various optimisation techniques. While using traditional methods they observed extreme difficulty in solving highly complex problems. In the 1990s, many researchers addressed long-term production scheduling (LTPS) by using simulated annealing, the genetic algorithm, the tabu search algorithm, and the ant colony algorithm. These algorithms are known as the meta-heuristic algorithms, and have proved to be the most efficient algorithms for solving LTPS thus far. The firefly algorithm is one of the best methods for visualising problems related to LTPS, and provides the best possible optimisation. It is one of the simplest methods, and easy to apply to any NP-hard problem. The experimental, and comparison with other recently published algorithms shows that the proposed algorithm is feasible, and is an effective approach for long-term production scheduling problems. The results indicated that a better solution is obtained by the proposed method, compared to other methods in terms of cumulative net present value, and average ore grade. Additionally, the CPU time via the proposed model is roughly 2.52% higher than the other method.

Ore sorting is a technology that is increasingly used to process primary raw materials. Timeconsuming and expensive empirical state-of-the-art test work is carried out to assess whether the use of ore sorting for the enrichment of a particular ore makes technical and economic sense. With the innovative simulation-based approach presented here, it is possible to direct the selection of a suitable sensor based on quantitative mineralogical and textural data, thus avoiding much of the empirical studies. Required data can be collected quickly and cost-effectively using available methods of automated mineralogy. The obtained parameters such as mineral grain size distribution, modal mineralogy, mineral area and mineral density distribution have been utilised in this study to simulate the prospects of success of ore sorting, applying different types of sensors. Empirical tests with commercially available sensor systems have been conducted to experimentally validate the predictions of the simulations. The estimation of the target mineral grade can be further optimised by the use of machine learning algorithms for the integration of automated mineralogy data and sensor data. The approach can easily be adapted to other types of raw materials and thus has great potential to become a key technology for the optimisation of processing experiments. The objective of this study is to improve the shrinking core model for particles with a particle size distribution and clarify the activation mechanism of rare earth elements dissolution by mechanochemical activation. To achieve this objective, the method, called the doubly integrated micromodel, was applied for a shrinking core model in this study. This method consists of integrating the batch leaching rate of a single particle over the distribution of both feed particle size and reactor residence time to arrive at the fraction unleached. The usefulness of the shrinking core model improved by doubly integrated micromodel was confirmed by comparing it with a shrinking core model. To apply the shrinking core model improved by doubly integrated micromodel to rare earth elements dissolution from weathered residual rare earth ores by mechanochemical activation, leaching experiments were performed for grinding samples by planetary ball milling. The reaction equation of mechanochemical reaction by planetary ball milling for weathered residual rare earth ores was investigated by x-ray absorption fine structure analysis. As a result of a kinetics study, the rate-determining process of leaching changed from reaction to diffusion reaction control by planetary ball milling. Based on these results, it was revealed that the main mechanism of activated rare earth elements dissolution from weathered residual rare earth ores was a mechanochemical reaction by planetary ball milling. This paper reviews the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Bill of 2006, identifies potential areas that require further consideration by the National Treasury and, where appropriate, offers alternatives. At its basic level a royalty regime consists of two elements: the base and the rate that must be applied to the base. Deciding on an acceptable royalty rate is a complex matter and can be done only after extensive analysis of all variables affecting the competitiveness of the regime. The proposed royalty rates are in the range of zero to five per cent and are based on sales revenue. It is argued that future investment patterns are more likely to be influenced by market cycles and commodity prices than policy events. Inevitably the current boom in the minerals sector will come to an end and the success of the proposed regime will be known only when profit margins are under pressure. Policy makers must therefore have the long run in mind when developing policies that affect the ability of industry to do business, without the need to renegotiate each time there is a change in the market. A long-run policy must be sufficiently flexible to allow for consistently fair sharing ratios and splitting of revenues between government and industry. Although broadly in line with international practice, the current version cannot be regarded as internationally competitive and efficient. In order for the royalty bill to become internationally competitive, promote beneficiation of mineral production and adequately compensate the State for the loss of a national resource, the National Treasury should heed the following main recommendations in this review: 1. Abandon the notion that each mineral product must have its own royalty rate; 2. Introduce an NSR type royalty that allows for value-addition costs to be deducted from the base; and 3. Provide for automatic relief through the use of a sliding-scale mechanism based on ability to pay, e.g. the X-Factor used in the gold mining tax formula.

The prototype and test results of the instrument for quick determination of incombustible content in deposited dust as a protection against coal dust explosion propagation are presented. Presently existing methods do not permit to obtain quick information about incombustible content, needed for the proper protection of workings. As the operating principle for the e instrument the dependence of reflection of infrared radiation intensity on incombustible content in the sample is chosen. The construction is based on the modern electronics. The measurement will be done at the sampling site. The range of the instrument is 0-100% of incombustible, direct reading, autonomous supply, weight no more than 0.5 kg, and is intrinsically safe according to EN Standards. During the Conference the instrument will be commercialized.

The classic technique to remove impurities in a cobalt stream is selective precipitation. This is usually followed by re-leaching to produce an advanced electrolyte for cobalt electrowinning. Although this technique ensures an adequate cobalt concentration in the electrowinning circuit, some of the consequences include unwanted losses through the numerous selective precipitation steps resulting in lower recoveries. One plant that currently utilizes selective precipitation is the Luilu Metallurgical Plant (Luilu) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This paper evaluates the benefits of using solvent extraction technology as a purification step in the Luilu Process with the aim of further increasing the overall cobalt recovery and to ensure that a suitable cobalt concentration in the advanced electrolyte is achieved. The implementation of a solvent extraction-electrowinning process is found to be beneficial in terms of achieving improved recoveries and cobalt cathode quality, however there are many other factors that impact the success of converting from the classic precipitation process used at Luilu.

"A renewed interest in nuclear power around the world in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is going to increase demand for uranium as fuel. This will result in more uranium being mined, which will in turn increase associated environmental pressures, such as fresh water use. A move to lower quality waters containing impurities such as chloride would help alleviate these pressures. In this work, we determined the uptake characteristics of weakly basic anion exchange resin Ps-EDA towards uranium from saline solutions in a dynamic flow column. Breakthrough curves were produced, with suppression of uptake being observed for chloride concentrations above 5 g L-1. Calculated resin saturation capacities at zero and 5 g L-1 chloride are comparable with literature values for strong-base anion exchange resins, and exceed those published for weak-base resins up to 20 g L-1 chloride. Data has been fitted to multiple breakthrough models, with the modified dose-response model most effectively predicting uranium recovery. The results show that the ethylenediamine functionality could be suitable for use in future uranium processing flow sheets where a high-saline lixiviant is used. IntroductionIon exchange (IX) is a key technology in the uranium mining industry and is well established for the extraction of uranium from both acidic and alkaline leach liquors (Edwards and Oliver, 2000). It was first employed in 1952 at the West Rand mine in South Africa (Ford, 1993; Taylor, 2016). H2SO4 and Na2CO3 are the most commonly employed lixiviants used to solubilize uranium in acidic and alkaline leach conditions respectively. The chemistry of these systems causes uranium to form anionic sulphate or carbonate complexes, which can be taken advantage of by anion exchange resins.Another major technology for the extraction and purification of uranium from leach liquors is solvent extraction (SX). This technique involves the extraction of uranium from the aqueous phase into an immiscible organic layer. Although this is a commonly used method, there are major drawbacks to it, including the use of large volumes of flammable solvents, solvent loss, phase disengagement, third phase formation, and the production of problematic degradation products (Veliscek-Carolan, 2016). These problems can be circumvented through the use of IX resins."

There are factors distinct from the mode of mechanical extraction that may have considerable influence on its prospects for extensive adoption; the rockburst factor is one of these. REPLY BY H.H. HAASE AND R.G.B PICKERING We agree with Professor O'Connor that, in conventional gold-mining operations, a disproportionate number of seismic events occur in the period immediately following a blast; rockburst activity follows the same pattern, and it has been calculated that, if the rockburst peak were spread evenly across the day, the rockburst exposure of stope workers would nearly double.

Geological, tectonic, geochemical and geophysical data were utilized for the mineral resource assessment of the Biga Peninsula in NW Turkey. During the deductive phase of the project multivariate statistical methods were applied to accentuate characteristic parameters which sufficiently describe the different types of Pb - Zn mineralization. The parameters most likely to be indicative of mineral occurrences were determined. In the following prognostic phase these parameters were further statistically treated to determine favourability indexes for the occurrence of a deposit within each cell of the training area. Preliminary results of probabilistic, univariate and multivariate methods are presented.

The integration of various highly sophisticated IT applications has been implemented at Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine, a new platinum mine in the Anglo Platinum Group. This system is required to assist with compiling the necessary geological and grade information together with safety, environmental, ventilation, rock engineering and logistical constraints, to allow the design of the appropriate mining layout, to schedule this design, provide the necessary output for technical review and costing as well as budgeting to allow medium- and long-term business planning. In addition the production management and short-term planning needs must be met. This includes the plotting of all underground and surface infrastructure and excavations, giving the necessary mining and best cut instructions, daily production management, ore reserve and grade management as well as assisting with budgetary management. In addition all safety, health, environment and risk assessment requirements and legal requirements have to be met. The system at Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine has met these criteria. "X-ray transmission (XRT) sorting has become the preferred recovery technology option in several parts of the diamond-winning flow sheet. In the De Beers Group, applications of XRT are found across kimberlite, alluvial, and marine operations. This is the result of intensive R&D conducted over the years to arrive at a suite of machine embodiments capable of sorting and auditing diamonds across all size ranges.The first applications in the marine environment used the technology in an auditing mode, and served as a useful early predictor of diamond content weeks ahead of sorthouse returns. The same machines are now available with ejection capability to produce high final product grades. The next application was tests on coarse alluvial gravels as an alternative to dense medium separation. The results were very encouraging, and tests are planned for both green- and brownfield kimberlite environments, as well as to explore an alternative to conventional techniques in final diamond recovery. At the Jwaneng mine Large Diamond Pilot Plant (LDPP), the objective is to recover diamonds in the size fraction –45 +25 mm.The technical challenge remains in the finer sizes, for high-capacitymachines as direct alternatives to conventional diamond recovery technologies. This is an area of ongoing R&D and it is only a matter of time before the breakthrough emerges. X-ray transmission fundementalsXRT makes use of X-ray imaging techniques to analyse objects and materials, and has a wide range of applications from baggage scanning for security purposes (Martz et al., 2016), to recycling of waste material (Owada, 2014). During the last decade XRT has been applied to an increasing extent in the minerals processing industry (von Ketelhodt and Bergmann, 2010; Sasman, Deetlefs, and van der Westhuyzen, 2018). Dual-energy XRT (DE-XRT), in which images of the target material are obtained at both high and low Xray energies, allows for elemental analysis and therefore can be used to discriminate between various minerals.A DE-XRT system makes use of a dualenergy X-ray line scan sensor to generate images of transmitted X-rays (Figure 1). Dualenergy refers to the camera, which contains two sensors, one responding to low-energy Xrays and one to high-energy X-rays. Feed material can be imaged either while on the belt, or while in flight."
