A theoretical analysis of a two-region solid-liquid flow system in horizontal pipes is presented, which considers a stationary bed of drill cuttings as a porous medium (-region) below of a two-phase dispersed flow (-region).The method of volume averaging was applied in this study to derive a rigorous mathematical model in which each variable is precisely defined. This model includes the volume-averaged transport equations for both the two-phase dispersed flow and the porous medium regions and terms from a macroscopic forces balance. The solution of the two-region model allowed evaluation of the behaviour of pressure gradient as a function of velocity, total volume fraction of cuttings and the relationship of the height of the stationary bed and pipe diameter. The solution is based on a backward finite difference explicit scheme. The simulated physical system is a pipe of 4.135 m in horizontal length and 0.0508 m in diameter. A one-dimensional, mesh-centred grid, consisting of 100 nodes, is used. The numerical results were compared with experimental data on slurry flows and a good agreement was found. The maximum oxygen intakes of samples of about 30 Bantu, weighing less than 50 kg from different tribal groups (Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho and Shangaan) were measured on a treadmill. The mean maximum oxygen intake of the 164 men was 2,12 litresjmin and only 18 men (11 per cent of the sample) had maximum oxygen intakes of 2,5 litres/min or above (the minimum requirement for such tasks as shovelling rocks and tramming it). The samples of the different tribes differ in age, but when the age effect is taken into account then there were no significant differences between tribes in maximum oxygen intakes. An incidental finding was that both age and body weight correlated significantly with the maximum oxygen intakes of these underweight subjects. Not one of the subjects who weighed less than 45 kg or who was older than 40 years had maximum oxygen intakes high enough to permit their being able to do strenuous work underground. It is clear therefore that Bantu who weigh less than 45 kg or are older than 40 years should not be employed on such strenuous tasks as shovelling rock and tramming it.

The National Institute for Metallurgy was the venue for a one-day colloquium on 'The Chemistry of Processes for the Recovery of Gold on Activated Carbon'. Organized by the South African Chemical Institute (Southern Transvaal Section) in collaboration with the National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM) and the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the colloquium attracted tremendous interest from the mining industry. Some 300 metallurgists, engineers, and chemists were brought up to date on advances in this technology made by scientists of NIM and the Anglo American Research Laboratories (AARL).

After a brief account of the differences between the control of underground fires and those on the surface, the paper describes the analogue detection system used on the mines of the Anglo American Corporation of South Africa Limited. The system comprises Spanair gas analysers, Becon combustion-particle detectors, a telemetering system, a surface signal-recording and-processing system, and an alarm system. The use of the system is described and illustrated.

Magnetic separation has long been used to upgrade and beneficiate a wide variety of industrial minerals. Advances in both wet and dry magnetic separators over the years has broadened their use, and questions are often raised about which separation technique or equipment type is most appropriate for a particular operation. This paper will provide a brief look at existing magnetic separation technologies, and discuss their potential advantages and disadvantages when applied to heavy mineral applications. Relevant case studies for the separation of ilmenite and chromite are then presented. The process development efforts undertaken for each case are described, and the rationale for selecting appropriate magnetic separation technology is explained. The nature of the material being treated must clearly be understood, knowledge and access to testing the best separation technologies is required, and careful process development and economic evaluations are a must. As is shown in the case study discussions, it is imperative that these principles drive the separation technology selection and placement, rather than looking at typical or existing similar flowsheets as rules. As examples, the ilmenite tailings case study presented in this paper shows how advances in technology have allowed for increased recovery of -45 µm ilmenite by utilizing a multi-stage SLon® wet magnetic separator circuit equating to an additional 30 000 tons of ilmenite produced per year. The virgin chromite case study presented shows that through careful testing and circuit design efforts using RED technology, a 20% increase in overall chromite recovery was achieved over previous demonstration work.

The production processes are described, and the properties of the two types are examined and compared. Guidelines are given for the selection of the correct grade of ferrosilicon for any particular application.

Throughout the history of mining, underground fires or explosions have killed many hundreds or thousands of people. Fortunately, the safety record has gradually improved as a result of many people’s work on improving safety standards and work practices. However, fire and explosion still remains a threat in many situations. As a result the UK Mines Inspectorate commissioned a project to study materials used underground and to develop a fire/explosion risk assessment system. Such a system has been developed, following the study of incidents, specified fire resistance criteria, and fire safety practices. The final methodology uses a series of check sheets to identify potential fuels and ignition sources, preventative measures, fire/explosion mitigation systems, and items for inclusion in emergency plans.

SYNOPSIS For some time, Vaal Reefs South has operated blindhole borers successfully as an integral part of the mining cycle of operations. To date, over 13 000 m of mechanized boxholing has been completed, and from time to time impressive performances have been achieved. The paper describes the machines, the modus operandi, and the structure of the boring organization at the Mine, with some of the results recorded. The Mine recently took delivery of two new machines with interesting design features. The introduction and early experiences with these two machines are also described.

VAN GRAAN, M.Sc (Pretoria) (Visitor) Microclimate suits have been shown to be very effective in decreasing physiological strain in hot, wet environments, thus enabling men to work without risk in areas that would normally carry a high risk of heat stroke. In this paper, some design considerations in the development of the frozen jacket are described. Water complied with most of the desirable properties required of a coolant material for use In a microclimate suit. The Human Sciences Laboratory has developed a jacket in which ice is used as the coolant and which is designed according to the most acceptable anthropometrical characteristics. The jacket consists of an inner poncho-type waistcoat containing 28 water compartments. Over this is worn an insulating jacket, which minimizes warming of the coolant by the environment. Suitable refrigeration units have been developed to freeze the jackets underground. Laboratory tests have shown that these jackets are effective for about 2,5 hours, Irrespective of the wet-bulb environment, when men are working at a moderate rate. Jackets should, however, be used only in environments in which the wet-bulb temperature is in the range of 32,S0 to 35,S °C.

Alternative procedures for the recovery of gold from old sand dumps are discussed, with emphasis on the use of heap leaching. The modification of material to improve its permeability prior to heap leaching is not currently receiving much attention in South Africa. The channeling of solutions through heaps and the high consumption of reagents sometimes ascribed to heap leaching can, as shown by the results described in this paper, be lessened by desliming of the sand prior to heap leaching and the treatment of the resulting slimes fraction by agitation leaching and carbon-in-pulp. This combined procedure results in a higher overal recovery of gold. Alternatively, the sand can be heap-leached as it is after agglomeration with lime and cement, which improves the mixing and neutralization of the material, as well as lessening the probability of channeling.

SAMPSON, Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Chem. Eng.), B.Econ. (Visitor) A spray roaster has been installed in the Johannesburg area for the treatment of spent liquors from a variety of small pickling operations. A new process was developed for the processing of the liquor that is contaminated with zinc chloride, and a commercial plant was built incorporating this process. An ionexchange plant separates the zinc from the iron chloride, and a liquid-liquid-extraction plant converts the zinc chloride to zinc sulphate and recovers the hydrochloric acid.

Radioactive waste in arid regions A conference on the disposal of radioactive waste in arid areas will be held in Cape Town during the period 7th to 12th September, 1986. It is recommended that engineers and scientists avail themselves of the opportunity to familiarize themselves with this relatively new multidisciplinary field of endeavor by attending the first ever conference of this nature to be held in South Africa. Iron control in hydro metallurgy The International Symposium on Iron Control in Hydrometalurgy will be held at the 16th Hydrometallurgical Meeting, from 19th to 22nd October, 1986, in Toronto, Canada.

Since the early 1970s, Korea has constructed many large-scale tunnels and underground storage caverns in response to the rapid industrial development. The rock mechanics engineers have accumulated valuable experiences in the area of underground space technologies. But they still face technical challenges in environmental and safety aspects. To discuss those challenges in Korea, a brief engineering description of underground space projects including oil and gas storage, food storage, pumped storage power plant, transportation tunnels, waterway tunnels, and radioactive waste disposal is presented. Mechanical and hydrological stability analyses of the storage caverns in Korea are also introduced. Depuis le début des années soixante-dix, le développement industriel rapide en Corée a entraîné la construction de nombreuses galeries et cavernes de stockage souterraines. Les ingénieurs de mécanique minière ont donc accumulé des expériences précieuses dans le domaine de la technologie de l’espace souterrain. Cependant, ils font toujours face à de nombreux défis techniques en ce qui concerne les aspects de l’environnement et de la sécurité. Pour présenter ces défis en Corée, l’étude présente décrit les projets d’espace souterrain, y compris le stockage de pétrole et de gaz, de nourriture, centrales de stockage pompé, tunnels de transport, tunnels navigables, et évacuation des déchets radioactifs. Des analyses de stabilité mécanique et hydrologique des cavernes de stockage en Corée sont aussi présentées. A description is given of a simple, cheap device that enables the intact shear strength of rock to be determined quickly and inexpensively. Thin rock plates, prepared with a diamond saw, are tested in double shear by a linear punching action. By varying the direction of the diamond-saw cut in a number of specimens, the change in shear strength can be measured for different orientations relative to the rock fabric.

This account highlights the procedures and methods adopted to bring the plant Into production. Some of the mistakes made and the factors that contributed to the success are also listed.

"Low-cost calcium lignosulphonate (CL), which is a byproduct of the wood pulping industry, was investigated as a potential binder during laboratoryscale pelletization of inertinite-rich high-ash coal fines from the Highveld Coalfield of South Africa. Coal-binder mixtures containing between 1 and 15% calcium lignosulphonate were prepared, pressed, and ultimate, proximate, porosity, XRD, and XRF analyses obtained. It was found that increased pressure during pelletization results in increased attractive forces, due to increased interparticle contact areas. FTIR analysis showed that chemical interactions occur between coal fines and the binder, as evidenced by the formation of new C-O ether-type bonds. The presence of moisture during pelletization enhanced surfactant activity of the binder. Chemical interactions between the coal and the binder seem to be mainly electrostatic, driven by Ca2+ from the calcium lignosulphonate, which may act as a bridge between the anionic parts of the binder and the surface of the coal. IntroductionCoal has over the years remained South Africa’s major energy source, with over 90% of the country’s electricity being produced via coal-fired processes (Arndt et al., 2016). Sasol’s coal conversion technology alone provides more than 40% of South Africa’s liquid fuel requirements (van Dyk, Keyser, and Coertzen, 2006). The production of high-grade coal requires the processing of run-of-mine (ROM) resources by a combination of processes which include crushing, screening, and washing (Radloff, Kirsten, and Anderson, 2003). These processes result in the generation of coal fines (< 0.5 mm) which, until recently, have been discarded into slimes dams (le Roux, Campbell, and Smit, 2012). Several issues are associated with slimes dams, among which are the costs of transportation of these fines from the place of origin to the discard point (often a considerable distance), and the potential environmental effects due to seepage of toxic materials into surrounding ecosystems (Clausen, 1973).Consequently, utilization of these coal fines is an area of great interest. Mechanical densification of fine coal by means of pelletization and/or briquetting to larger sizes for use in technologies that require lump coal, such as chain-grate stokers and fixed-bed gasifiers, has been shown not only to reduce environmental risks (Mangena et al., 2004), but also to significantly reduce storage and transportation costs (Mani et al., 2001). Pelletization is the process by which solid particles are consolidated into uniform, usually hard, impact-resistant agglomerates, rendering them useful as a fuel with sufficient calorific value for domestic and industrial utilization (Finney, Sharifi, and Swithenbank, 2009)."

Tunnel 99’, the Swedish National Road Administration´s (SNRA) general technical specification for road tunnels requires that the load bearing system must be designed to withstand specified design explosion loads. This paper presents the results of an SNRA study to provide a perspective of design analyses tailored to comply with the new requirement. The paper provides an example of a design analysis for assumed tunnel conditions using a numerical model. Dynamic predictions of potential damage to the rock mass and ground support system (rock bolts and shotcrete) from the specified explosion loads are presented including the nonlinear response of the shotcrete. “Tunnel 99”, qui fixe les règles de l’Administration nationale suédoise des Routes (Vägverket) concernant la conception et la construction des tunnels routiers, requiert entre autres que la structure porteuse soit capable de résister à certaines contraintes spécifiques résultant d’explosions. Cette étude présente les résultats d’une étude effectuée par Vägverket en vue d’obtenir une perspective d’analyses de conception spécialement élaborées pour se conformer aux nouvelles règles. Il contient un exemple d’analyse en fonction de conditions déterminées, basée sur un modèle numérique. This paper reviews some of the traditional methods of reserves estimation based on lognormal distribution with or without an additive constant. In the rush to computerize mine planning and grade control generaly, proven estimation methods, such as Sichel&apos;s t, seem to have been overlooked. By use of a personal microcomputer, the traditional methods were investigated thoroughly, the results being tested against existing tables and figures. The fitting of a lognormal distribution, including estimation of the additive constant, is discussed, and the calculation of Sichel&apos;s t estimator and its associated confidence limits is described in detail. Payability calculations for a lognormal distribution are also covered briefly. The advantages of personal computers, particularly speed and ease of use, are emphasized. This low-cost approach permits detailed investigation of some of the assumptions and approximations inherent in the established methods of calculation. Several disturbing discrepancies are revealed in various factors, and some generalized statements made by previous authors are found to be over-simplistic. Full details are given of acceptable approximations and computer algorithms, and concern is expressed over the possible loss of proven methods under the welter of new, sophisticated computer software.
