A new graphical method termed the ?Design Curve Diagram? (DCD) has been developed to analyse non-Newtonian pipe flow data by relating the plastic Karman number to the plastic Reynolds number. Since the plastic Karman number is directly proportional to the pressure loss gradient and the plastic Reynolds number is directly proportional to the velocity, the DCD is essentially a non-dimensional pipe flow curve. This makes the DCD conceptually easier than the commonly used Hedström-Moody diagram. While, the DCD was developed for the analysis of yield plastic fluids (e.g., Bingham plastics), it is equally applicable to Newtonian fluids.

Lack of success in attempts to develop viable large-scale continuous mining techniques (previously reported by MP o?Hare in 2004) led the team at Kopanang to explore alternative solutions to their ongoing need for improved profitability. By calling into question the basic assumptions around the stoping of narrow tabular deposits of gold, fragmentation and more particularly, the range of sizes of blasted rocks eventually became the focus of serious study. This background is briefly covered before the sequence of the investigations is described. So far, some of the ?rules of thumb? derived over the years have been confirmed, albeit for totally different reasons than those from which they arose; some persistent theories on gold loss have been debunked, and some new ones have been developed. Blast optimisation (the means by which desired fragmentation is achieved) has been based on tailoring energy to rock characteristics in an innovative packaging design for explosive charges. Other beneficial consequences arising from the work include increased production volume and gold output, a decrease in milling consumables, and the Mine Call Factor is being maintained at a level previously thought to be unachievable. This is very much a ?work in progress?, and it is empirical in its approach. The authors are the first to recognise that they have yet to determine in absolute measures why some of the innovations have had the effect that has been observed. Also that there other factors which may contribute to the result, but which have not yet been examined. Nevertheless, publication of the work completed so far is felt to be justified; firstly on the basis of the achievements themselves, and secondly for the benefit of others in the industry for whom similar problems exist. Statistical reports of the effects on the business are included at the end of the report. Detailed laboratory test results have been separated into an appendix, leaving salient graph and tabulated data in the main text. For ease of reading, units of measurement for particle sizes below 1mm are described in microns, but millimetres have been retained for those at that size or greater.

The term geostatistics was introduced by Matheron (1960) to cover the development and application of mathematical and statistical models which take specific account of the spatial structure of a 'regionalised' variable. In ore valuation the relative positions of available ore values within an ore body or portion thereof, can only be ignored in the unlikely case where there is no significant pattern of association or correlation between them - that is, if they do not disclose any significant spatial structure. A structure might not be evident in the available data, e.g. where the spacing of the available values is relatively wide such as in surface drilling on a new deep gold mine. However, practical selective mining considerations could dictate the need for eventual underground valuation on a scale much smaller than that represented by this spacing and the possibility of a significant structure on such a smaller scale cannot then be ignored. Some spatial structure must be present wherever the average variability among the values of check ore samples from the same, adjacent or nearby grooves or of borehole cores from the deflections in the same borehole, is lower than the overall variability for ore values within the whole ore body. Another practical check on the presence of a spatial structure is where it is evident that there is or will be a significant variation in the ore grades for individual ore blocks. Any correlation between peripheral and follow-up internal ore block values also provides evidence of a spatial structure, and hence the regression techniques covered in §1.16-1.2 1 can be accepted as the first application of the geostatistical procedures. The spatial structure of a regionalised variable can be studied and measured by the pattern, usually a decreasing function, in the level of correlation or of the covariance between pairs of values as the distance or lag between the values increases, that is, by the correlogram or covariogram (Krige, 1968, 1969, 1976; and Fig. 18). In geostatistics, for various practical and theoretical reasons (Matheron, 1960, 1971), the measure most commonly used is the semivario- gram, which increases as the lag increases. The semivariogram and covariance values are interrelated and for the lognormal- de Wijsian pattern used extensively for gold ore valuation both measures as well as their relationship can be defined on a fairly straightforward basis. Provided the underlying as- sumptions are realistic, the choice of measure - correlogram, covariogram or semivariogram - will be dictated mainly by convenience. Paragraph 2.2 will cover some general geostatistical terms and $2.3-2.12 will deal mainly with the theoretical side of the lognormal-de Wijsian model for spatial structures. Wherever the relevant variable lends itself to normalisation via the 3-parameter lognormal distribution (see 51.9) the de Wijsian semivariogram model is also likely to be suitable and will provide substantial advantages in application. Various practical applications will be covered in Section 3. Although confined to the lognormal-de Wijsian model, much of the theory covered and the general approach is applicable to all spatial structures. [ ]

South Africa is reliant on coal for the generation of almost all the electricity used in the country, and several large industrial concerns such as Sasol are also coal based. Research relating to the mining, beneficiation and utilization of coal is important in order to ensure the optimal exploitation and use of coal within the country. The Fuel Research Institute (FRI) of South Africa was established in 1930 to investigate all aspects of coal beneficiation and utilization in South Africa. The FRI went on to conduct world-class research and in 1957 a pilot coal preparation plant was constructed in Pretoria to enable large-scale practical experimentation. The pilot plant played a pivotal role in the establishment of South Africa?s low ash coal export project. Political and economic factors contributed to the eventual closure of the FRI and South Africa experienced a period of about 10 years between 1990 and 1999 during which very little public coal preparation research was done. This changed for the better towards the end of 1999 when Coaltech 2020, a collaborative research program was established. Participants included the CSIR, universities, the government and the major coal producers. Coal preparation research conducted under Coaltech thus far include dewatering and drying of fine coal, size classification of ultra-fine coal and dense-medium fine coal beneficiation. Currently, the Coaltech focus is on the beneficiation of low-grade coal reserves and is investigating existing as well as new techniques that can be utilized to provide cost-effective beneficiation of low-grade raw coals and reject coals.

The density used to covert volume to tons is critical in determining the real in-situ tonnage of Mineral Resources. However, the methods used to determine density and the use of different technical terms are seen to be inconsistent throughout the industry. Probably the best discussion addressing the determination of density was presented by Lipton (2001). This paper does not try to replicate this excellent work, but rather to review current industry practice and present a comparison of the approach to density in public reporting. Some of the technical terms used in reporting and the common methods applied are also discussed.

In view of this the Chairman proposed that the paper on flash smelting be introduced and discussed first, after which the remaining three papers would be introduced followed by discussion on all three.Dr Cocquerel, who presented the first paper, used some typical flow diagrams to illustrate the process and stated that the program considered only steady-state operations and did not take into account the dynamical changes. Subjective judgment was necessary for the preparation of input data and some degree of user appreciation was required.Dr Cocquerel said that no work bad yet been done on an optimization program, but that this was being considered. Such a program would require a large amount of physical and chemical data which were not yet available. The variables to be optimized were the energy and material consumptions and the loss of metal in the slag.The Chairman opened the discussion by asking Dr Cocquerel if he could give a brief description of the flash smelting process for the benefit of those not familiar with the subject. Dr Coquerel replied that in the Outokumpu process con¬centrates were injected directly into the furnace, and that the process was somewhat analogous to flash distillation or evaporation processes, but was perhaps closer to the burning of pulverized fuel.The process had two distinct advantages. First, the heat evolved in the smelting reaction was used to heat the furnace, which resulted in less fuel consumption, and, second, the effluent gases were cheaper to treat than the effluent gases from other pyrometallurgical processes. This was important particularly in view of the current interest in pollution problems.Mr P. Marais thought that the authors had done themselves an injustice by not including details of the very complex processes taking place in the furnace."

A strong incentive exists for the coal-preparation engineer to improve plant efficiency by modifying circuits and upgrading process equipment, since these result in lower production costs and more valuable plant products. At the Grootegeluk Coal Mine, it was found that the overall plant efficiency could be improved by modifications to the dense-medium circuits, the installation of additional process equipment for the recovery of fine coal, and improvement of the fine-material processing circuit. Apart from these modifications, there is still potential to increase the plant efficiency, particularly in the utilization of plant waste, the recovery of slimes, and even the improvement of cycloning performance as a result of new cyclone design. This paper points to the potential wealth locked up in existing coal-preparation plants, and shows how the coal-preparation engineer, with new technology at his disposal, can unlock this wealth.

This paper shows, through a case study, the impact of multivariate grade modelling upon mine design and mine planning. A deposit explored by drill holes is considered, in which the grades of five elements (copper, silver, molybdenum, arsenic, and antimony) are of interest. Forty alternative models of the deposit are constructed by fitting the joint correlation structure of the grade variables and using conditional cosimulation. In addition, a reference model, obtained by averaging the alternative models, is also considered. The study shows that the resulting mine design (final pit characteristics and production schedules) is sensitive to the grade model under consideration, and that the design based on the reference model may not be optimal when compared to the alternative models based on cosimulation. However, when assuming a given long-term plan and extraction sequence, the grades and net present value (NPV) calculated on the reference model are unbiased with respect to those calculated on the alternative models with the same extraction sequence. The latter allow assessing the possible dispersion of the actual grades and NPV around their expected values, and are useful for the planner in order to determine the probability of meeting given production targets and of exceeding or falling short of given threshold grades. Additionally, unlike cosimulation, the separate simulation of each grade variable leads to unrealistic resource models and to biased results in mine design and mine planning. This approach should therefore be avoided, unless the grade variables are spatially uncorrelated.

Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, published a book titled 'Lean In', where she invites women to sit at the table. In summary, to 'sit at the table' entails not only embracing opportunity, but to actively seek out opportunities in leadership positions. Sandberg points out that, unfortunately, apart from institutional obstacles, a woman's own perceived limitations have a negative impact on her leadership ambitions. To create an environment where diversity will flourish, where everyone has a seat at the table and everyone has a voice, safety must be established first. To establish safety within a diverse team, there is power in relationships and connections. This study will first and foremost review theories in literature as to why diversity and inclusion are so important and the value that diversity brings to our industry. The study also recommends a few focus areas for improving diversity and inclusion in the industry.

Gy's formula for the variance of the fundamental sampling error (FSE) is based on a model that assumes independent selections of particles. A generalization of this model, which can theoretically lead to more realistic representation of actual sampling processes, was, for the first time, experimentally verified by repeated sampling from a well-mixed batch consisting of particles of zirconium silicate of two different sizes. The predictions for the sampling variance made in Gy?s theory and in the more general model were compared with the experimentally observed sampling variance. During the experiment performed here, the variance prediction made in the theory of Gy ranges from 0.96 × 10?7(g2/g2) to 0.95 × 10?7(g2/g2), which is approximately a factor 60 lower than the experimentally observed variance (5.76 × 10?6(g2/g2)). The difference between the Gy prediction and the experimentally observed variance cannot be fully explained by the uncertainty in the experimentally obtained variance due to the finite number of degrees of freedom. Therefore, the difference is likely to be a significant effect. This shows that, under the experimental conditions, Gy?s formula for the variance of the FSE probably undervalues the sampling variance, unless an empirical correction factor for grouping and segregation is applied in the theory of Gy. The new theory resulted in a variance prediction of 6.00 × 10?6(g2/g2), which is much closer to the observed variance than the Gy prediction. This indicates that the generalization of Gy?s theory offers an outlook for providing a better variance prediction than the Gy predictor in the case of dependencies between particle selections. The objective of this paper was to investigate the possibility of reducing process (fresh) water and increasing recycled water (thickener tank overflow water). As part of the investigation, rougher flotation tests were done with the two water types and a mixture of the two (50%/50%). The effect of recycled water on the grade-recovery response and rougher recoveries was investigated. When thickener tank overflow was used (50% and 100%), the nickel+copper grade versus nickel recovery decreased. The decrease in the grade-recovery was due to higher pyrrhotite recovery. Also, there were no effects on nickel and copper recoveries, which was confirmed using multivariate statistical analysis at the 95% significance level. In her wonderful book, 'The Guns of August', historian Barbara Tuchman tells us that the French war plan for 1914 was dedicated entirely to an offensive strategy, not a defensive one. Plan 17, as it was called, concentrated everything on a French advance to the Rhine, leaving the French left virtually unguarded. This strategy could only be justified by the fixed belief that the Germans could not deploy sufficient manpower to extend their invasion around through western Belgium and the low provinces; and this in turn was based on the belief that the Germans would never use reserve troops in the front line. Al evidence to the contrary was ignored. But when the war came, the Germans followed Count Von Schlieffen's plan; they did use reserves in the front line and they did come the long way around on the west. The result- as you know-was a protracted war, with fearful consequences for the rest of our century.

This paper takes a personal look, through the author?s own experiences, at the implementation of innovations in the narrow-seam, hard-rock mining environment of South Africa?s mining industry over the past 40 years. A number of examples are used to illustrate some of the successes and failures over this period. More importantly, the examples are used to illustrate that the bulk of the investment for these projects should have been applied in a manner that could have achieved more sustainable results. The use of the word ?technology? in this context is also examined, as it is the author?s contention that only measuring the performance of machinery fails to encapsulate the potential of the entire system describing the scope of the innovation being implemented. These experiences and observations are projected onto the current backdrop of upheaval in the relationship between key industry stakeholders and the sustainability challenges facing areas of the mining sector in the South African economy. The paper concludes with some opinions on where attention can be focused in order to develop new thinking that can be applied for the safe and economic extraction of the nation?s mineral wealth.

This paper reports on a test that was conducted underground in a mine for two years on the following: pipes coated with paint, fusion-bonded powder, metal, or impregnated tape; and aluminium, stainless-steel, 3CR12, and plastic pipes. It was found that the degree of corrosivity and mechanical damage increases substantially from the shaft of a mine towards the stope. Thus, the range of coatings that can be used successfully is fairly large in the shaft and haulageways, but corrosion-resistant materials, especially corrosion-resistant steels, need to be used close to the stope. A study of the relative costs involved showed the costs of pipes of low-carbon steel and unplasticized polyvinyl chloride to be lowest, and those of epoxy-coated steel pipes to be highest.

The reasons for constructing a model of an orebody for which both the parent population and the sampling distribution are known are discussed and details of the model are given. A brief summary of Matheron's theory of regionalized variables is included, with particular reference to his kriging estimators and their variances. Using the model, a comparison is then made between these kriging estimators and other commonly-used estimators. These are compared to find the one with the minimum variance, and an analysis is included to investigate whether any of the estimators is biased. Also included is a comparison between theoretical and experimental variances for some of the estimators.

Vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalyst has been utilized to oxidize SO2 to SO3 since the early 1900s. This versatile product displaced the expensive and easily poisoned platinum-based catalyst in nearly all applications by the 1930s. MECS has been manufacturing the vanadium-based catalyst since 1925 and today is the leading supplier in the world of sulphuric acid catalysts in a variety of forms. Currently, MECS has worldwide customer/technical support for the catalyst as well as a dedicated catalyst manufacturing plant in Martinez, California. MECS also has a strong technical and research and development programme dedicated to creating new and improved products and services. This paper will describe some of the technical details of vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalysts as well as offering a unique look into how caesium-promoted MECS catalysts can be used in single and double absorption acid plants, and off-gas plants running on irregular gas feeds, to reduce emissions and preheater run times. An update on MECS technical services extended for use in characterizing converter performance is also presented.

Two very successful schools on 'The design and operation of plants for the recovery of gold by activated carbon', were held from 14th to 18th October, 1985, and from 24th to 27th February, 1986, at Mintek. They were arranged by the Institute in close co-operation with Mr. Peter Bailey of Gencor, who was course leader. There is often a need to increase capacity through existing mist eliminator installations without significant tower modifications. Often there is not enough extra space outside existing vessels unless more expensive changes can be justified. Also, plant downtime must be considered. The challenge in retrofitting is to overcome velocity limitations inherent in the design while at the same time extend performance capability. The solution most often is to create new ways to add extra filter area while remaining constrained to the existing space. This strategy, however, can dangerously backfire if basic design principles are not followed. Mist eliminator design is a complex integration of many conflicting performance parameters. Often the objective is to increase scrubbing capacity while maximizing collection efficiency and service life and minimizing operating pressure drop (energy cost), particle regeneration (re-entrainment) and overall maintenance costs. Results of plant retrofitting using mesh pads, impaction fibre beds and diffusion fibre beds are presented based on actual plant projects. Often the retrofit project can be more effective by increasing the scope and combining other new plant equipment with the upgrade such as new tower components. In some cases, the type of mist eliminators can be upgraded from impaction type (velocity dependent) to Brownian diffusion type (velocity independent) if additional downstream protection or reduced emissions are desirable, especially at turndown rates. Trade-offs between different fibre bed types and styles are discussed as they relate to performance and maintenance.
