Phosphate ore is an important strategic mineral resource in which apatite is the main valuable mineral. Flotation is the most commonly used method to separate apatite from middle-low grade phosphate rock. Selective flotation separation is based on the difference of physical and chemical properties of minerals occurring at the three interfaces of mineral/bubble/water. Surface and interface chemistry of mineral have been playing an important role in interpreting and governing its flotation phenomenon. In-situ, visualized and high-precision analytical techniques, such as Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, Atomic Force Microscopy and Molecular Simulation, have been applied to explore and uncover microscopic nature of apatite flotation. Consequently, a great progress at molecular or atomic level on surface and interface chemistry of apatite flotation has achieved in the past decades. In this paper, the research progress of surface and interface chemistry of apatite flotation such as surface wettability, surface-charging characteristics, surface dissolution behavior, adsorption mechanisms of fatty acid collector and depressor on apatite surface were systematically reviewed. This review will be helpful for the development of more selective reagents and efficient technologies for apatite flotation. Mine ventilation in the German coal mining industry is concerned mainly with problems of thermal environment arising from greater depths and with increasing emission of methane gas. The development of computer techniques over the past ten years for solving these and ancillary problems is reviewed. The emphasis from a planning and control point of view falls mainly on ventilation network calculations, temperature predictions and advance estimates of methane emission.

This paper reports on what appears to be the first discovery of prehistoric mica-schist mining in southern 4frica. The mine concerned was found in a location very rich in rock art that is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Kalahari. The authors conclude that the oval pieces of mica schist that were found at the mine site were used by Khoisan peoples to scrape fatty tissue from hides that were to be cured. Radiocarbon datings seem to indicate that such ovals were used for at least 20 000 years.

This paper, which adopts a philosophical approach, attempts to analyse the contribution that the computer is capable of making in geological analysis, financial evaluation, and mine project control. Also examined are some reasons for non-utilization of these capabilities. As with most computer associated problems, the cause is primarily human and not mechanical. The paper gives one numerical example of the analysis of geological data and one of the evaluation of mine-design data. The values used in the examples are intended only to emphasize certain points and are not necessarily reproducible.

One of the important facets of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy is its service to its members. One way of achieving this objective is by pursuing an active branch structure. In this Spotlight, Richard Beck, Holder of the Regional Development Portfolio, gives the aims of the Institute's branches, with a short note on each branch prepared by the regional chairman. Aims of the Branches: The primary aims of the Branches of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy are those of the Institute itself: to further the interest of its members, to uphold the status of the mining and metallurgical profession, and to promote the image of mining and metallurgy. Beyond these 'high' objectives, the branches have a special function in providing a more intimate relationship between the Institute and its members. The branches enable members who live outside the Johannesburg area to participate in the affairs of the Institute to an extent that would not otherwise be possible and that they themselves can define. This is achieved through the holding of social events, colloquia, and visits.

Small A computer system to aid in the planning of production in mines and its application to a complex colliery are descrIbed, The system consists of three phases, the data base maintenance program the 'production simulator' and the report generation facility, In the first part of the paper the categories of information kept on the data base and the functions of the simulator are described in general terms. The application of the system to a multi-product colliery operating a variety of mining methods in a number of superimposed seams is described m the second part. In conclusion some comments are made on further applications and intended future developments.

Tuzla Coal Basin in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the largest coal area in the State. Regional mining industry sensed the need for mining machinery database development in order to achieve easier planning purposes and equipment selection for open cast mines in Tuzla Coal Basin. Several databases for mining machinery used on the bituminous deposits, i.e. on brown coal and lignite mines, were developed at the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Civil Engineering, Tuzla. System Development Method was used as the approach to the database development, generating relational structure of database. First database was established for trucks and was presented as simple table, drawn and filled on the paper sheet. In the next phase, data were stored in spreadsheet type software (Quattro Pro and Excel). Lately developed database is Bucket Wheel Excavator database designed in MS Access. Two concepts, spreadsheet and Access, were integrated into one large database, enabling manipulation of hundreds of data at one place. Required adaptations of existing database in MS Access, enables Access to be used as an integration resource. Database is designed to reserve free memory for input data for mining equipment not considered so far, such as spreaders, crushers, belt conveyors, tripper cars, etc. New, integrated database, at this stage, can be imported to any type of commercial or individual software where needed. Mining machinery integrated database for open cast mine operations is under going testing in a State company, Coal Mines Tuzla. Raise-boring experiences in the gold mines of the Anglo American Corporation Group by J. W. WILSON and P. C. GRAHAM Published in the Journal, October, 1972. Discussion by F. H. Guise-Brown., B.Sc. (Min. Eng.) (Member) INTRODUCTION Messrs J. W. Wilson and P. C. Graham are to be congratulated on an excellent paper containing several thought-provoking remarks. The concept of allocating a machine and equipment valued initially at some R300 000 on an experimental basis is courageous, and the results obtained could be of interest to the mining industry as a whole. The Gold Fields of S.A. Group approached this problem differently. In pioneering the start of this work in South African gold mines, they considered that expenditure of this magnitude would be warranted only if the proposition was viable right from the start. To this end, a Robbins R41 was purchased expressly to assist in the duplication of part of the No. 1 shaft system of the Doomfontein Gold Mine. Mr M. J. Koortsl has summed up the initial results of this work and given some preliminary costing, but inflation since that period has made these figures somewhat out of date.

"Rockbursts continue to be a major contributor to mine accidents and cause of damage to mine excavations, particularly at great depth. The problem of rockbursts has also escalated in civil engineering tunnels driven at depth, due to high levels of in situ stress at such depths. Attempts have been made in the past to mitigate the impact of rockbursts, with rock support remaining the ultimate method for providing stability in rockbursting environments. However, records show that, on many occasions, conventional support elements such as rockbolts, wire mesh, shotcrete, and lacing fail to withstand severe rockburst events.Recently, a support method termed ‘sacrificial’ support was proposed as a potential additional method to prevent rockburst damage, based on observations made after rockburst events in a mine. The philosophy behind a sacrificial support system is that, under dynamic loading conditions, support in the form of a liner must fail; leaving behind, undamaged, what was previously supported rock mass. The sacrificial support concept reported herein is applicable in situations where the source (i.e. seismic event) of the rockburst is located remote from where rockburst damage is likely to occur.Spalling tests based on the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) technique were conducted to study some aspects of dynamic rock fracturing in tension at high strain rates and the role a sacrificial layer plays in combating dynamic rock failure. A single Hopkinson pressure bar, with a long cylindrical intact rock specimen attached at the bar free end, was impacted by a striker on the opposite free end in order to generate a dynamic stress pulse responsible for spall failure upon reflection from the specimen free end. Different liners and liner combinations were then introduced at the specimen free end as support. Such a simple, yet robust, experimental set-up allowed the potential benefits and failure mechanisms associated with sacrificial support under dynamic loading to be demonstrated and compared with ‘sacrificial support’ behaviour observed in real rockburst events in a mine. Analysis of the results revealed that varying liner thickness and mechanical impedance between rock and support liner play a significant role in limiting rockburst damage."

In the last decades, the exponential increase in the cells’ volume resulted in significant advantages such as investment costs, footprint and energy savings. However, in larger size cells, despite the increased diameter/height ratio, new constraints arose related to the need for decreasing the larger froth transport distances to enhance the froth recovery. Thus, the use of froth crowders and internal launders became compulsory to maintain the froth transport distances but decreasing the ratio between gas and collected mineral flowrates. Consequently, the bubble load will increase until reaching a critical bubble surface coverage. In this paper, the concentrate carrying capacity (tph/m2) is described in terms of the bubble surface coverage (bubble loading) at the pulp-froth interface and the froth recovery (froth transport) and is evaluated as a function of the cells’ volume and operating variables. A sensitivity analysis, based on industrial operating and design conditions, such as superficial gas rate, particles size, froth crosssectional area and cells’ volume, was developed for evaluating the metallurgical performance of cells from 100 to 630 m3. Results show that limiting carrying capacity can arise for the whole range of cells’ volume, depending on critical operating conditions, particularly in first rougher cells and cleaning stages of industrial flotation circuits. The increase in cells’ volume consistently increases the bubble loading (bubble surface coverage) under all conditions, approaching the limiting conditions more rapidly in the case of cells without internal launders. Otherwise, the limiting condition was achieved when the particle size DPS decreased from 50 to 20 (μm) and for superficial gas rates significantly less or larger than 1 (cm/s). The use of internal launders allows for increasing the range of the operating conditions needed to reach a certain carrying capacity. Few thinking people will dispute the fact that a constant improvement in the wages of Black personnel is essential, but this cannot be done merely by a redistribution of income in South Africa.

A survey was conducted so that the degree of corrosive, erosive, and abrasive attack on material-handling systems in the mining and mineral-processing industry could be assessed, and so that the areas of research and development that would be relevant to the needs of the industry could be determined. Of the 59 different mines that were invited to participate in the survey, 41 returned completed questionnaires, giving a return rate of 70 per cent. The total number of completed questionnaires amounted to 45. An analysis of the results shows that attack by erosion or abrasion is considered to occur more often than attack by corrosion. However, al three types of attack must be regarded as significant problems within the mining industry, since 52 per cent of the participating mines reported pump failures due to the inability of the materials of construction to withstand the operating conditions, and almost 90 per cent reported piping failures due to corrosion (22 per cent) or to erosion and abrasion (78 per cent).

"In selecting a suitable method to sink a vertical shaft for underground access, a number of constraints influence the ultimate decision of where and how to develop the shaft, not least among these being safety, development and construction time, and cost. Two additional considerations stand out: these being geotechnical conditions and technology, the latter taking into account existing underground access. Assuming a project for which an existing underground excavation is available, it is tempting to build a shaft sinking project from the outset based on the raiseboring method, which has the potential to be the safest, fastest, and least expensive method provided that geotechnical conditions permit.And therein lies the rub: regardless of project time or cost constraints, when it comes to raiseboring a long (say, greater than 500 m), large diameter (greater than 4.5 m) shaft, the rock mass conditions ultimately dictate what method of shaft sinking will be feasible. Over the course of several studies for a particular project, several geotechnical analyses were carried out specifically for the purpose of developing a shaft by raiseboring. Risk analysis and experience showed that where the rock mass conditions indicated an unacceptably high risk potential, an alternative method needed to be considered, even if this meant increasing both the time and financial requirements.In this paper we present an overview of geotechnical investigation practices for shaft sinking. Decisionmaking thresholds for raiseboring or other methods of shaft sinking are discussed, including probabilities of failure, empirical rock mass classification, basic wedge failure, and back-analysis of a failed case. The design of appropriate support, and analysis of relative safety benefits for various shaft sinking methods, falls outside the scope of this work, and will be presented in a separate paper.IntroductionThe potential for rock mass failure during shaft development and construction affects whether a project is completed safely, on time and on budget. During the course of several studies to establish ventilation shafts for an underground expansion project, geotechnical analyses of rock mass stability and failure potential were carried out. The investigations were guided by the method of McCracken and Stacey (1989) together with insights from Peck and associates (Peck, 2000; Peck and Lee, 2007, 2008; Peck, Coombes, and Lee, 2011)."

Ion exchange resins were investigated for the effective recovery of platinum, palladium, and gold from a pregnant cyanide heap leach solution. Screening results indicated that strong-base anion exchange resins proved to be most effective in the recovery of these metal cyanides. Gold was selectively recovered with the use of Minix, while effective recovery of gold, platinum, and palladium over the base metals, copper, and iron, was achieved with Amberlite PWA-5. Successful elution of these metal cyanides was possible from both Minix and Amberlite PWA-5, using a 2M potassium thiocyanate solution at ambient temperature. Acidic thiourea was unable to elute platinum from either Minix or Amberlite PWA-5. Effective elution of palladium and gold were, however, achieved with use of acidic thiourea. Using these results, two conceptual flow diagrams for the recovery of these metals from cyanide solutions are proposed.

Automation in mining requires accurate maps of road networks on site. Because roads on open-cut mines are dynamic in nature and continuously changing, manually updating road maps is tedious and error-prone. This paper investigates the possibility of automatically deriving an accurate representation of the road network using GPS data available from haul trucks operating on site. We present an overview of approaches proposed in literature and test the performance of publicly available methods on GPS data collected from trucks operating on site. Based on shortcomings seen in all tested algorithms, a post-processing step is developed which geometrically analyses the created road map for artefacts typical of free-drive areas on mine sites and significantly improves the quality of the final road network graph.
