At present, over 85% of the world’s rare earth oxides are produced from the bastnäsite ores, found mainly in China. Meanwhile, the ion adsorption ores are the most important sources for heavy rare earth production. As the demand for rare earth materials in the world increases, other forms of rare earth deposits will become new potential resources of rare earth production in the future. In this paper, flotation performance of a steenstrupine ore from the Kvanefjeld deposit for rare earth recovery was studied through laboratory bench testwork. The effects of various factors including grinding size and collector dosage on recovery and selectivity of the selected rare earth elements, La, Ce and Y, were investigated. A rare earth concentrate with the grades of La 2.8 wt%, Ce 5.1 wt% and Y 1.0 wt% at recoveries of 80.5% La, 79.8% Ce and 55.3% Y was obtained in optimum conditions. The use of geometallurgical modelling is becoming more common in concentrator plant design and during the operational phase. Predictive modelling aims to define optimised process parameters for the concentrator plant to accommodate variability within the ore feed. The main objective of this study is to show how the metallurgical response of different types of ore blends can be simulated using kinetic models derived from experimental flotation tests with different geometallurgical end-member ore types and their blends. For these validation tests, four different end-member ore types containing different ratios of chalcopyrite, chalcocite and oxidised copper minerals from Rich Metal Group’s Madneuli copper-gold mine, Georgia, were tested. Kinetic flotation tests, including both rougher and cleaner flotation tests, were carried out. The simulations were performed using HSC Chemistry software based on mineral compositions of the ores and kinetic models using rectangular distribution equations and flowsheet model. Simulated and experimental results of copper grade, copper recovery and concentrate mass pull correlated well with R2 values of >0.95. Based on these results, the metallurgical response of different ore blends can be simulated based on the flotation kinetics of end-member ore types. The use of this kind of simulation will create savings during the test work phase and increase the flexibility and predictability in the processing stage. Applied geophysical methods such as the surface seismic method have been applied for many years and in many places, mainly for oil exploration and to a lesser extent for mineral deposits? exploration in sedimentary basins. The seismic method fundamental is based on the variations of acoustic impedance in a layered earth model and such variations at each main geological interface create reflected waves that are processed and imaged in order to output a clear picture of the subsurface structure. The geology of South Africa was historically, and even until recently, considered as unfit for seismic exploration and the mines were always reluctant to spend any portions of their exploration budgets on these techniques. Hard rocks and high P-waves velocities were creating quite a hopeless model for any mine geologist or geophysicist (if any), unsuitable for the proper use of seismic waves to image their subsurface problems. Boreholes were considered the only reliable tool to derive a geological image of the mine structural features and were linked sometimes with surface methods such as aero-magnetism. The obvious flaw of this methodology was the inability to derive a continuous image from a discrete set of measurement points. Surface 3D seismic is the tool that gives a reliable solution from the initial model extracted from the boreholes, as even the aero-magnetism mapping gives a flat image, unable to show any depth correlation from well to well. The first 3D surface seismic surveys were recorded in the early Nineties only for the gold mines of the Witwatersrand, after a series of serious new shaft sinking failures. The wrong geological locations of these shafts resulted in financial loss of several hundred million rands. The era of3D seismic just started in South Africa and till 1997, all seismic done in the country was for gold exploration with geological target depths close to the oil exploration average depth of investigation. A very important breakthrough was reached when the depth accuracy of the seismic image was tested in real scale as the stopes were surveyed. An error of amplitude of 20 m was usual when true depth was compared with the seismic image predicted depth and shape. This accuracy, completely unknown in oil exploration, started to gain supporters of seismic methods in the mining community but the cash problems and the concentration/disappearance of gold mines in the late Nineties, led to the belief that seismic would be just a very short exploration activity for the mining sector. ort exploration activity for the mining sector. But starting in 1998 with Impala, a tremendous and continuous 3D surface seismic activity occurred in the platinum mining sector. The seismic world got used to new terms such a Merensky and UG2, which have replaced the VCR and black reef. If the primary expectation of platinum surface 3D seismic was to determine and ascertain new shaft locations, as for the gold mines, the quality of seismic data led the mine geologists to require smaller and smaller imaging of geological objects. In addition to the main structural image, small faults, potholes, and shear zone were common expectations of platinum seismic. In a constant velocity environment, what saved the day was the sharp density contrast between the PGM reef and the embedding geology. A good contrast of impedance exists in the whole Bushveld and is sufficient to have enough reflected waves from the PGM main layers to build a high quality seismic image of the subsurface. Recent advances in technology have led in less than 10years to major improvements in the seismic acquisition by using high frequency vibrating seismic sources, but also in processing and interpretation. With these latest improvements, seismic can detect objects of 7.5 m size, either fault throws, flexures, etc. The PGM formations of the Eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex are now accessible for seismic imaging, with cost per square kilometre comparable to the borehole cost of the same surface unit. The economically acceptable seismic surveys can be used for UG2 structural imaging up to a depth of 210 m below surface. Linked with borehole information, 3D seismic today offers a wide range of information for mine development: structural imaging, small fault detection, pothole and shear zone identification. All users of 3D seismic have also used this technique as a tool in the process to qualify their mineral reserves and especially from the category ?inferred? to the category ?measured?. Junior mining companies, in the feasibility stage of their projects, are also quite eager to use seismic as a reserve certification tool, when they present financial statements to future potential investors. The current high demand on platinum, pushes the seismic towards new technologies to be implemented in order to improve the final image. Using surface and borehole seismic together or acquiring seismic surveys with multi-component receivers have been just introduced in South Africa. In less than 10 years, surface seismic by adapting its methods to the special case of the Bushveld, became a mandatory step in mine development and ore resources evaluation. As part of the ?seismic? world we are proud to be a major player the ?surge? of platinum exploration and production in these last years and we will certainly increase our synergy with the mine sectors in the exciting coming years.

Dense Medium Separation (DMS) technologies are used for light (coal, lithium) or heavy (chromite, iron ore, diamonds) minerals concentration, but also for ore pre-concentration (Pb/Zn) or waste (plastics). Dense media are mainly formed from a suspension of magnetite or ferrosilicon in water. Such DMS circuit design or optimisation requires a full and detailed material balance which can be obtained by the aid of modelling and simulation tools. This balance is not limited to ore and its valuable minerals, but also the recovery of the dense medium itself. If the density is the main property used for separation, the particle size plays a non-negligible role, and, more precisely, the liberation classes which can be associated to the washability curve. The paper presents how the modelling and simulation platform USIM PAC can answer this challenge with the set of models for DMS operating units such as drums or cyclones, and their associated screens (drainage, rinsing) and magnetic separators for medium recovery. "Flotation of copper-molybdenum sulphide ores in seawater entails critical challenges such as selective recovery of molybdenite, effective pyrite depression, and reducing the lime addition required to reach highly alkaline conditions. It is essential that laboratory flotation tests aimed at solving these problems give reliable, reproducible results and indicate the correct approach for industrial operations. Rougher flotation of coppermolybdenum sulphide ores in seawater was investigated using two different cells: a modified Denver cell and a standard commercial cell. The effect of an organic reagent on the flotation performance was tested, and the fast/slow-floating model was used to describe the results. The modified Denver cell significantly improved the reproducibility of the flotation test results, due to technological enhancements such as the impeller being driven from below without a stator, which enables the whole froth surface to be scraped with a paddle at a constant depth and rate. Organic reagents are a promising alternative to inorganic reagents for depressing pyrite in seawater. However, further studies should be conducted to investigate their impact on molybdenite recovery, as well as to evaluate the possibility of depressing pyrite after molybdenite separation. The fast/slow-floating model was found to be appropriate for describing the flotation kinetics of the copper-molybdenum ores. The parameters are useful for comparing the performance at different conditions. IntroductionOwing to the increasing scarcity of fresh water, the use of seawater mining and mineral processing is becoming increasingly important (Cisternas and Moreno, 2014). Seawater can be desalinated by reverse osmosis, but this involves considerable costs, limiting it to the big mining companies (Akgul et al., 2008; Leidner et al., 2012; Ghaffour, Missimer, and Amy, 2013). Furthermore, desalination has environmental consequences (Lee, Arnot, and Mattia, 2011); for example, a desalination plant designed to process 2.5 m3/s requires an electrical energy supply of around 30 MJ/s. To supply this power demand, a thermoelectric plant burning bituminous/sub-bituminous coal mixtures at a thermal power generation efficiency of 35% might release around 1200– 1500 t of CO2 per day. Furthermore, the effluents from desalination plants are typically discharged into the sea, and their high temperature and ionic content inevitably modifies the marine environment, with unknown consequences. The direct use of seawater is, therefore, more attractive, but it also poses major challenges since seawater contains ions that adversely affect mineral recoveries. In particular, in the flotation of sulphide ores in seawater, the floatability of molybdenite is depressed (Castro, 2012; Laskowski, Castro, and Ramos, 2014)."

A wire line geophysical survey was done and the results indicated that a single shaft larger then 4 m diameter unsupported would not be suitable. The shafts were placed 28 meters apart measured from centre to centre. To ensure that the skin to skin pillars between the shafts remained regular and to minimise any deflection, the pilot holes were drilled with the Rotary Vertical Drilling System. The different shaft sinking methodologies are discussed explaining the risk associated with each method.

The hot ductility of in situ melted tensile specimens of micro-alloyed steels having C contents in the range 0.12?0.17% (mass %) have been examined over the 700?1000°C temperature range. An improved testing method for simulating the continuous casting process was used, which takes into account both primary and secondary cooling conditions. Increasing the N content to electric arc furnace levels (0.01% N) was found to cause a serious deterioration in ductility. V-N steel gave better ductility than Nb-containing steels due to less precipitation. From a cracking perspective, low- N steels are generally recommended but, when not feasible, a combination of Nb and V gives even better ductility. However, to be sure of avoiding transverse cracking in higher N steels a small addition of Ti is required. This resulted in a decrease in the fraction of fine particles and in accord with this better ductility. Transverse cracking of industrial slabs was then avoided.

Probability-based empirical methods were employed as an alternative approach to predicting uncertainties associated with rock mass properties. The focus was on developing probabilistic spreadsheets to forecast rock mass classification indexes. Histograms were constructed to describe the best distribution in predicting rock mass properties. The developed models also offer utility in predicting the impact of discontinuities within the rock mass on rock strength and rock mass classification systems. Statistical analyses identified volumetric joint count, joint spacing, joint frequency, and rock strength as the most influential parameters. Moreover, the statistical analysis revealed varying degrees of correlation among different rock mass properties. While some properties demonstrated significant correlations suitable for modelling, others did not align well with any correlation model. The results highlight the need for a comprehensive approach to rock mass characterization, considering multiple factors beyond volumetric joint count. Geological complexities, including tectonic activity and weathering processes, may obscure direct correlations. These results emphasize the importance of empirical modelling and detailed site investigations for accurate assessment of rock mass quality and stability in the Himalaya.

Dr E. C. Hanekom (Visitor): Two years ago we used the bubble pick-up technique as developed at Anglo American Corporation for screening candidate flotation agents prepared in our laboratories. It was obviously necessary to know to what extent the technique gave reproducible results and a statistical evaluation of the test method was made using a mineral sample provided by Anglo American Corporation. A bubble of 2.0 mm diameter was used and the measuring graticule was divided into squares (units) with sides of 5.0 mm at 25 X magnification. The mineral granules had diameters from 53 to 74 mm. The bubble was loaded by depressing it against a layer of mineral grains to give an arbitrary but constant compression of 0.4-0.5 mm. It was rolled five times through 2 mm horizontal displacement. The bubble was then lifted, its load compacted by gently stirring and the projected area measured in squares (units) on the grid. Each substance was tested at 5 ppm concentration in distilled water at five points in the pH range 3-6. With these standardized conditions of operation the reproducibility of the test was studied. Four materials were tested and at each pH value the procedure of forming a bubble, picking up granules and counting the units was repeated ten times. From these results the standard deviation for a single count at any pH value was calculated for each material (Table 1. The coefficient of variation of approximately 3 per cent was relatively low and it was decided that further refinements in the counting procedure would be of doubtful benefit with the present apparatus. Similar experiments were carried out with 12 sample materials. In this case the bubble formation and pick-up were repeated four times at each pH value, the mean value was calculated for each set of four observations and final pick-up values for the materials were obtained by selecting the highest mean count. Each test was completely repeated a number of times as indicated in Table 2 and the standard deviation calculated. The results allowed the selection of the more promising materials and the rejection of poor performers at the 95 per cent confidence level. All tests were carried out by one operator. Some evidence was obtained that the method is sensitive to operator bias. In conclusion it can be said that from all the results analyzed it would appear that once operation conditions are fixed (viz operator, pH control) the precision of the method is adequate. Over the period 1964 to 1969 Conzinc Riotinto of Australia undertook and completed an evaluation of a large low-grade copper orebody on Bougainville Island in the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. From the outset it was clear that the geographic, climatic and topographic characteristics of the area would necessitate a heavy capital outlay on production and support facilities. Both the physical problems and the magnitude of the investment amplified the need for a thorough and rigorous evaluation of the various strategies for exploiting the orebody. In view of the number of independent and inter-related variables and the flow of new data, a computer-based evaluation process extended the scope and depth of the analysis considerably. The system used permitted an iterative assessment and re-assessment of the various strategies with the results becoming increasingly refined with time. This process encompassed the modelling of the orebody, the simulation of alternative operating strategies and the determination of the financial profitability of the project,

Rare earth elements (REE) are present at concentrations of approximately 0.36 % in phosphogypsum stacks located in Phalaborwa, South Africa. The REE are present in the phosphogypsum in solid solution in the gypsum and as fluorine and aluminium rich precipitates. Recovery of the REE offers opportunities for valorization and reducing the environmental impact of the phosphogypsum waste. This paper presents the results of investigations into the leaching behaviour of rare earth elements and other impurities from phosphogypsum using aqueous sulfuric acid. The effects of acid concentration, temperature, residence time, and the influence of impurities were evaluated for their impact on the solubility of rare earth elements in a sulfate medium. It was found that a significant fraction of the REE can be leached from the phosphogypsum in a range of conditions much less severe than traditional hard rock rare earth processing conditions. The REE were leached at a sulfuric acid concentration of 110 g/l, temperature of 30°C – 40°C and a residence time of approximately 8 hours.

To optimize the flotation of Ca-minerals, their separation contrasts were investigated by coupling experimental and theoretical techniques. We showed that they mainly rely on structural properties such as the Ca-Ca distance on their exposed surfaces but also on the ability to control the intermolecular interactions. An optimized composition of the carboxylic collector by calculating the collector-mineral and the intermolecular interactions was developed. Blending the saturated acids and non-ionic molecules with a fatty acid collector significantly increases the flotation selectivity between scheelite (CaWO4) and fluorite (CaF2). The theoretical results were validated by experimentally improving the separation contrast between Ca-minerals. After the tests of several depressants and collectors, the best depression of gangue Ca-minerals (fluorite, apatite and vezuvianite) was found by combining sodium silicate and sodium carbonate. "The ore deposits of the Zambian Copperbelt occur in sedimentary strata that have been subjected to relatively mild, flexure-type folding. Unrolling serves to reconstruct the original depositional geometry of the folded sedimentary strata and is in common usage on the Copperbelt both for geological analysis of drill hole data and in routine ore reserve estimation.A computerized method of unrolling was introduced at Roan Consolidated Mines in 1969 based on a standard contouring program. A contour map of the geological structure is drawn from a regular grid of elevations, interpolated from the original, irregularly-spaced intersections. Unrolling is performed across this grid, perpendicular to one or two axes specified by the geologist. Each intersection is unrolled independently, and the new co-ordinates are subsequently processed to produce unrolled maps.The technique has been used successfully at RCM over the last two years in both the estimation of ore reserves and exploration planning."

Geotechnical monitoring plays an important role in the detection of operational safety issues in the slopes of open pits. Currently, monitoring companies offer several solutions involving robust technologies that boast highly reliable data and the ability to control risky conditions. The monitoring data must be processed and analysed so as to allow the results to be used for several purposes, thereby providing information that can be used to manage operational actions and optimize mining plans or engineering projects. In this work we analysed monitoring data (pore pressure and displacement) and its correlation with the tension and displacement of the mass of an established failure slope calculated using the finite element method. To optimize the back-analysis, a Python language routine was developed using input data (point coordinates, parameter matrix, and critical section) to use software with the rock mass parameters (cohesion, friction angle, Young’s modulus, and Poisson’s ratio). For the back-analysis, the Mohr-Coulomb criterion was applied with the shear strength reduction technique to obtain the strength reduction factor. The results were consistent with both the measured displacements and the maximum deformation contours, revealing the possible failure mechanism, allowing the strength parameters to be calibrated according to the slope failure conditions, and providing information about the contribution of each variable (parameter) to the slope failure in the study area.

The growing market demand for lithium is mainly due to its use in the manufacture of batteries for electric or hybrid vehicles and portable equipment (smartphones, tablets, power tools, notebooks, etc.). Currently there is great interest in finding new sources of lithium and technologies for its utilisation. Li-S batteries have received attention due to their theoretically high specific energy density, which is 3 to 5 times greater than that of Li-ion batteries. Unlike Li-ion batteries, of which the main raw materials are lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide, the main raw material for Li-S batteries is lithium chloride. The anode used in Li-S batteries is metallic lithium, produced by a molten lithium chloride electrolysis process. The extraction of lithium from pegmatites such as spodumene, previously abandoned in the 1990s for being uneconomical, has become attractive due to the increase in prices as well as the need for greater lithium purity of products made from lithium-bearing minerals. The main methods used for lithium recovery from spodumene ore include the sulfuric acid process, the alkaline process (lime or limestone as raw material) and the chlorination roasting process. Thermodynamic modelling using HSC software 5.1 was conducted to predict different reactions that could occur during chlorination roasting of the spodumene/MgCl2+CaCl2 system. Lithium extraction from the solid obtained after the chlorination roasting was also investigated. The results of thermodynamic analysis provided a better understanding of the chlorination roasting process for lithium extraction. Metallurgical tests with a mass ratio of 1:6 (spodumene:chlorides) and molar ratio of 2:1 (MgCl2:CaCl2) allowed over 95% recovery of the lithium contained in the spodumene concentrate.
