Some observations on 'ancient' mining at Phalaborwa C. E. MORE. B.A. (Pretoria) (Visitor) A brief account is given of historical references to the Phalaborwa area, the first being to the mountain of copper and iron sought by Francois de Cuiper in 1725. These are followed by a description of several finds in the area, which are related to finds described in the literature and to Bantu tradition on the subject. Phalaborwa is one of the earliest known mining sites in the Republic of South Africa, Loolekop having been a mining centre, as shown by carbon-14 dating, since 770 A.D.

He is a graduate of the University of the Orange Free State and is the Uranium Plant Superintendent at Buffelsfontein and he, therefore, is in a very strong position to describe this very excellent job which is being done as he has been associated with this plant from the inception." After the presentation of the paper the President said: "Gentlemen, the paper you've heard from Mr Meyburgh is a very concise and interesting account of an important piece of work, and I think the title is so completely descriptive of the subject, which is admirably set out in the paper which you have heard. You probably haven't all had the opportunity of reading it, but you very soon will. I found it interesting to note that the results predicted were surpassed in the operation of the plant to date. The actual results obtained are significantly good, I think. Any process which, in this country, increases production and decreases costs, is to be welcomed, particularly when it is so necessary for South Africa almost to bend over backwards to utilise every avenue available in order to increase the scope of the production for overseas' markets, of her metallurgical and mineral potential. In lighter vein-and there is no reason why we should always be so serious-I am glad to see that, in a scientific journal like this, such words as the American word 'crud' which I have been picked out about so often, because my grandchildren use it, is now given an aura of respectability. Thank you very much, Mr Meyburgh, for an interesting paper. We have a long list of contributors, and I am not going to waste any more time. Process control optimisation depends a lot on the availability of timely data from production to give operators a chance to make adjustments before potential process upsets or disruptions happen. A lot of data is already available with newer and updated machine technologies, but what about the process upsets coming from the raw materials that we use? They are natural products and therefore they are not of a stable composition or mineralogy. The production process depends on a certain chemical or mineralogical stability of the raw materials when they come to a roaster, kiln or sintering stage. Only then can the proposed reactions take place and the equipment be operated at stable temperatures. Laboratory analytical technologies have the limitation that they depend on representative samples and have a long time delay. Therefore online (real time) analysers are used nowadays in mining applications to obtain an early indication of the actual mined or to-be-processed ore. Most available technologies can only analyse inorganic content on an oxide or elemental level. Near infrared (NIR)- based online analysers can overcome that limitation and give a real time analysis of organic as well as inorganic composition, if required on a mineral level. The paper will present two case studies where the NIR online technology was successfully adapted.: a) Optimising refractory gold ore processing at the Goldstrike roaster operation b) Optimising the sinter process at a Japanese manufacturer. On 5 August 2014, the Orkney M5.5 earthquake, the largest in South African gold mining districts, occurred with an unusual strike-slip mechanism at great depth of 4.78 km below the surface. In a rare case, the ML 5.5 earthquake occurred within the area covered by the legacy 2D and 3D reflection seismic data acquired in the 1990s and 2000s for gold exploration and mine development. In addition, the earthquake ML 5.5 rupture plane was recorded and accurately delineated by the underground in-mine seismic network near the source region. The integration of the legacy 2D reflection seismic data and mine seismicity data allowed us to identify a near-vertical structure, striking northnorthwest-south southeast (NNW-SSE). The ICDP-DSeis team drilled three holes (Hole A, Hole B, and Hole C), and two holes (Hole B and Hole C), intersected the upper edges of the ML 5.5 rupture. These holes recovered metasediments, metabasalts, intrusive rocks including dolerite sills and lamprophyre dykes adjacent to the fault zone, and the fault gouge. Late Prof. Tullis Onstott and geomicrobiologists installed a packer in Hole A and successfully recovered saline water and detected gas (~10 MPa). Slip weakening and rupture propagation are significantly influenced by the existence of fault gouges and the production of wear material between two sliding rock surfaces. Using the fault gouge material recovered from Hole C, we conducted friction experiments under dry and room temperature conditions at high slip velocity of ~100 mm/s and normal stress of 2 MPa. The resulting steady-state frictional strength was ~0.66 over a slip weakening distance of ~9.1 m. The steady-state frictional strength was high, which may be caused by large gouge thickness, and the rate of wear generation. As a result, it is proposed that the Moab Khotsong ML 5.5 seismogenic zone is complex and could be controlled by three main processes: a) the complex structural architecture of the seismogenic zone (e.g., intersection of fault, lamprophyre dykes, and dolerite sills); b) the mechanical process induced by tectonic and/or mining related stresses; and c) the mechanical and chemical processes caused by the water and rock interaction.

The Mathews-Potvin stability method is widely used in the Canadian mining industry as a starting point to determine the maximum dimensions of mine stopes. However, it cannot be applied to inclined (more frequently encountered) mine stopes without conducting numerical modelling to obtain the stress factor A, defined as a function of the ratio of unconfined compressive strength of intact rock to the induced principal stress on the exposed stope walls. The need to conduct numerical modelling significantly limits the application of the Mathews-Potvin method. In addition, given its empirical nature and main application for preliminary design, it is deemed undesirable to conduct numerical modelling, especially elaborate modelling. Alternatively, theoretical methods can provide a much simpler and quicker way to estimate stresses around stopes and the corresponding stress factors. Over the years, a large number of studies have been conducted to estimate stresses around openings excavated with various crosssections. However, theoretical or graphical solutions remain unavailable for mine stopes that typically consist of horizontal floor and roof, and two parallel inclined walls (hangingwall and footwall). To remedy this situation, a series of numerical simulations is first performed for openings with vertical and inclined walls, including typical stopes commonly encountered in underground mines. A group of empirical solutions is then formulated to estimate the induced principal stresses at the roof centre and mid-height of the stope walls. The validity and predictability of the proposed solution have been verified using additional numerical simulations. The proposed solution can thus be used to calculate stresses and the resultant stress factors A around typical mine stopes with any inclination angle and height to width ratio, under any in-situ stress state, without conducting numerical modelling.

This paper describes the engineering properties of Givi dam foundation. Givi dam will be built across the Givi River on the andesitic rocks (Karaj formation) in Ardabil province (northeast of Iran). Geotechnical investigations including drilling, pumping tests, sampling for laboratory testing and discontinuity survey. Physical and mechanical properties of andesitic rocks such as density, water absorption, porosity, uniaxial compressive strength, triaxial compressive strength, durability and direct shear tests are evaluated in this paper. Discontinuity data are process for the determination of dominant sets and for the rock mass characterization in terms of classification systems ( RMR, Q and RSR ). Correlations between these three classifications are discussed. In the mining method used at O'Okiep Copper Company (OCC), vertical crater retreat, the prime requirement for the fill is that it should be sufficiently strong to be free-standing to a height of 150 m. Other requirements are minimal decant and drainage water, and high pulp density to allow large tonnages to be placed quickly and alleviate transport problems. The excessively high cost of cement precluded the use of a cement-based fill, and after three years of extensive investigations a backfill based on the smelter slag was produced. Currently a fill with a uniaxial compressive strength of greater than 1 000 kPa after one month is being produced. This is in excess of the design specification of 850 kPa after 2 - 3 months. The research and development which went into the slagfill is briefly covered; the production of the fill from the various raw materials is described; and the design and control systems of the backfill plant, the reticulation system and its monitoring are examined. Finally, the implications of this high- quality fill for the mining programme are assessed.

Since the first application of solvent extraction as part of the hydrometallurgical processing of copper, several studies have been carried out to optimize extractant formulations. In 2006, Solvay developed the ACORGA® OPT series of solvent-extraction reagents to optimize copper transfer by use of a blended formulation containing both aldoxime and ketoxime as well as selected modifiers. The incorporation of selected modifiers in these blended reagents resulted in increased copper transfer, due to the interaction between the modifier and oximes within the blend. By changing the ketoxime concentration and ratio of modifier to aldoxime, the strength of the formulation was optimized to enhance copper transfer and improve Cu:Fe selectivity. This formulation is well known in the African region under the ACORGA® OPT5540 name and provides the best performance at the conditions of agitated leach plants with pregnant leach solutions that fluctuate in Cu grade and pH. This paper investigates the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from a dilute cyanide leach solution containing base metals, in a manner similar to that used for gold extraction in a typical CIP process, and focuses on both the adsorption and elution stages. The carrier-phase extraction of precious metals using activated carbon offers significant advantages over other processes in terms of simplicity, the high pre-concentration factor, rapid phase separation, and relatively low capital and operating costs. As a sorbent, activated carbon is still by far the most important material because of its large surface area, high adsorption capacity, porous structure, negligible environmental toxicity, low cost, and high purity standards. Adsorption tests were performed on a pregnant alkaline leach solution (0.15 ppm Pt, 0.38 ppm Pd, 0.1 ppm Au) resulting from cyanide extraction performed in column leach tests. The initial adsorption rates of platinum, palladium, and gold were very fast and recoveries of these three metals were approximately 90 per cent after 2 hours and 100 per cent, 97.4 per cent, and 99.9 per cent respectively after 72 hours. The parameters that influence the extraction of PGMs and Au were examined to assess their relative importance during the adsorption process in order to provide the basis for process optimization. The concentration of thiocyanate was not identified as significant factor for PGMs adsorption, while nickel concentration was the most significant extraction process parameter. Base metal cyanide complexes adsorb and compete with the PGM complexes for sites on activated carbon, and while copper adsorption can be minimized by adjusting the residence time, nickel adsorbs at approximately the same rate as that of the PGMs, influencing the loading capacity and adsorption kinetics of the PGMs. The feasibility of eluting platinum and palladium cyanide complexes from activated carbon using an analogue of the AARL process was investigated. Platinum and palladium elute from activated carbon almost to completion in 4 to 5 bed volumes at 80°C, while the elution of gold at this temperature is slow, with a significant amount of gold still to be eluted after 16 bed volumes. Cyanide pre-treatment was found to have a significant influence on PGM elution. Higher cyanide concentration in the pre-treatment step results in more efficient elution up to a point, and experiments suggest the possibility of an optimum cyanide concentration, beyond which elution efficiency starts decreasing.

Optimization of current control systems, proper maintenance and efficient training of personnel are recommendations made to control the amount of dust that underground employees are exposed to on a daily basis in the coal mining industry. This dissertation forms as part of Sasol Mining?s commitment to protect the health and safety of their employees by suppressing and controlling dust at their mines. This study aims to understand the relationship among mining processes, exposure to dust and dust suppression control measures. The research phase of the project was done at the Sasol Mining Secunda complex where underground visits were undertaken to investigate current control systems and also new systems that are being implemented by Sasol Mining. This work was important because it helped determine the sources of dust underground and also to identify the shortcomings of current control systems and to test the efficiencies of the new systems implemented at Sasol Mining. The most important result of the research work was the identification of which underground operators were exposed the most to dust as this assisted in designing a dust suppression system for the areas where these operators worked. The main conclusions of this study are that the current control systems are sufficient for controlling dust and ensuring dust compliance if they are used efficiently and maintained properly.

The purpose of the project was to conduct a feasibility study to determine if the current operating bottom dump trucks that haul coal should be replaced with rear dump trucks. The engineering availability of the bottom dump trucks was lower than targeted while the operating costs are the highest of all coal haulers within the Anglo Coal opencasts. To determine if it is feasible to replace the current bottom dump trucks with rear dump trucks, a production profile simulation was conducted to determine the number of rear dump trucks that would be required to meet the annual coal hauling requirements. The total capital and operating costs of these rear dump trucks were also determined using a total cost of ownership model. These were compared with the current costs of the bottom dump trucks to determine if it is financially feasible to replace the bottom dump trucks with rear dump trucks. Having considered the capital outlay that would be required to replace the bottom dump trucks with rear dump trucks as well as their respective operating costs, it was concluded that the current bottom dump trucks should be replaced with rear dump trucks. Other factors were considered in coming to this conclusion.

"Coal pillars are prone to scaling over time, and are progressively reduced in size and consequently subjected to increased load and reduced strength. The effective factor of safety therefore reduces. Databases of failed and stable pillars cannot, therefore, be regarded as definitive.More than a decade has passed since the first attempt to predict the lifespan of pillars. This paper presents a review based on the new database and pillar strength equations. The methodology for the analysis is based on the fact that pillars scale. The ultimate safety factor (defined as the ratio between strength and load at the time of failure) is derived, followed by an estimate of the rate of pillar scaling, which results in an estimate of the expected time of failure.It is suggested that the predicted lifespan should not be used as an absolute indicator of expected pillar life, but rather as an index – the pillar life index (PLI) – to complement the safety factor and related probability of failure when evaluating pillar stability. A pillar with a predicted lifespan of less than 500 years would be regarded as being in danger of imminent collapse, while a lifespan of at least 1 000 years should be required for long-term purposes.The differences between this analysis and that published in 2003 constitute a strong case for regular reviews of all the empirically based stability indicators, namely the safety factor, probability of failure, and the PLI. Reviews at 10 year intervals appear to be required.The constants in the proposed method are valid only for the Witbank No. 1, 2 and 4 seams and the Highveld No. 2 and 4 seams.IntroductionIt is well known that over time, coal pillars are prone to scaling, and thus are progressively reduced in size and consequently subjected to increased load and reduced strength. The effective factor of safety therefore reduces and it is quite possible for failure to occur after a long time interval. In fact, scrutiny of the database of failed pillars indicates that failure occurred after periods ranging from 2 to 49 years, and not immediately after mining.The factor of safety for pillars at the time of failure is not the same as that immediately after mining. The concept of the safety factor is based on the pillar strength obtained by statistical analysis of pillar dimensions immediately, or within a month after mining, when the surveys are conducted. Strictly speaking, the safety factor as commonly used is valid only immediately after mining, and it continues to reduce thereafter. The ideal situation would be to base analyses of pillar strength on pillar dimensions at the time of failure, but that is simply not possible because the real dimensions cannot be measured at that time."

In this study we explore the use of a novel numerical modelling approach to study the effect of pillar reinforcement on pillar stability. Case studies in the literature indicate that tendons, strapping of the pillars, and shotcrete or thin spray-on liners are commonly used to reinforce pillars. No clear methodology exists to select the type of support or to design the capacity of the support required, however. This has led to ongoing collapses in some mines in spite of heavy support being used to reinforce unstable pillars. A limit equilibrium model with confinement on the edge of the pillar was used to simulate the interaction of the support with the failing pillar. The model correctly predicts that an increase in confinement will lead to a decrease in the extent of pillar failure. As the displacement discontinuity boundary element method allows for the efficient solution of largescale bord-and-pillar layouts, the effect of pillar confinement can now be studied on a mine-wide scale. Accurate calibration of the limit equilibrium model is, however, required before this method can be used for the design of effective pillar support.

The mining and minerals processing industry is gradually being digitalised to improve efficiency and reduce waste. One aspect of this transition is to ensure that relevant process-data in sufficient quality and quantity is given to the operator in the right format and at the right time to improve decision-making. Augmented reality (AR) can serve as a potential ICT-based support tool for human operators to achieve this goal. With AR, virtual information is combined with the real world in real-time. Therefore, AR technology has the potential to fulfil the need for improved data visualisation in Industry 4.0. This article is the result of a collaborative effort of Chalmers University of Technology and RWTH Aachen University to identify selected state-of-the-art applications of AR that are currently being applied in the mining and minerals industry or selected related industries. This paper aims to show opportunities for the application of AR in the mining and mineral processing industry with selected conceptual applications. This paper concludes with several requirements identified as necessary to implement the conceptual applications of AR in the mining and minerals industry. Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analysis has been widely adopted in the geochemical and environmental field as a cost-saving alternative to standard analyses. This paper outlines the efficacy of a method for indirectly quantifying organic copper content in solvent extraction circuits via stripping of the chelated metal with concentrated sulfuric acid in a single contact and subsequent pXRF aqueous analysis. pXRF analysis is common within the mining industry but presents unique challenges with liquid analysis, the most prevalent of which are briefly discussed. This method was developed specifically for mining operations with regional constraints and limited resources. Providing an in-field alternative to flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, this entirely mobile XRF analysis method produces consistent and accurate results within minutes and at a fraction of the cost.

Technology is advancing at a rate that makes it extremely difficult for the mining industry to keep pace. Many advances occur within a given piece of technology and often this is missed by the disciplines that could have gained advantage by its implementation. Often this may have been simply an aspect of cost exceeding benefit. However, there are some technologies that potentially have such a far-reaching impact on the mining industry that the benefits simply outweigh the cost. The application of 3D laser scanning in the mining industry has the potential of taking the concept of 'Google maps?' underground. This presents an opportunity where the virtual world of underground can be traversed with relative ease and many aspects of measurements could be obtained without having to visit the working place again, potentially saving countless man-hours and still delivering precision work with significant savings in downtime, stoppages, and exposure to safety incidents. Anglo American Platinum maintains its competitive advantage though the review and application of appropriate technology. This paper describes the 3D laser scanning trial at one of Anglo American Platinum's new shafts, and goes on to show the benefits encountered through the application and the involvement of the various MRM disciplines.

"A computer model of the rutile, ilmenite and zircon industry was developed jointly by Associated Minerals Consolidated and Consolidated Gold Fields for exploring marketing strategies and making predictions over a ten-year period. The industry is described briefly and the reasons for modelling it and choosing a deterministic approach explained. The economic structure of the model and its level of complexity are discussed. The necessity and techniques for convenient input and clear output, the team composition and the method of work are discussed.The reasons for the choice of FORTRAN, large computers, remote batch terminals and the vital importance of fast turn-round are discussed.Costs in staff time and computing are given, with an assessment of the reasons for the success of the model. The model is used on a regular basis to aid management decisions."
