This paper focuses on the application of ion exchange technology for the recovery of copper from a leach solution originating from a heap bioleach in which base metals are leached from a low-grade ore that bears platinum group metals. Screening tests indicated that Dow XUS43605 has high selectivity for copper over the other metals in the solution, namely nickel, iron, cobalt, zinc, manganese, and aluminium. Batch adsorption kinetic experiments showed that copper adsorption equilibrium is attained at a fast rate. The kinetics of adsorption increased as the temperature was increased from 25°C to 60°C due to the decrease in solution viscosity and the subsequent improved intra-particle mass diffusion. Single-component Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were fitted to the batch copper adsorption equilibrium data, and a maximum copper capacity of 26 g/l was observed for Dow XUS43605. The effects of flow rate, temperature, pH, and initial metal concentration on the dynamic recovery of copper were investigated in fixed-bed columns, and it was determined that temperature and flow rate had the most significant impacts on the loading of copper on the resin at copper breakthrough. A 36% increase in copper loading at breakthrough was observed when the temperature was increased from 25°C to 60°C. Finally, it was determined that a split elution is possible by using different concentrations of H2S04 to first elute co-loaded nickel from the resin, followed by the elution of copper.

A partial shaft pillar extraction project was embarked on at a mine in the West Wits mining region in South Africa. Prior to the extraction, a rock engineering assessment was conducted with the main objective being to establish which areas of the shaft pillar could be extracted without unduly affecting the stability of major infrastructure within the shaft pillar. Standard numerical modelling methods were used to conduct this assessment and several areas were identified for extraction. However, during the extraction process, it was found that the infrastructure was affected more than was originally predicted by linear elastic modelling. In addition to this, several large events resulted in far more large aftershocks than would normally be predicted. In order to gain an understanding of this phenomenon, seismic data was integrated with numerical modelling as follows: > The seismic data in the form of displacements was integrated in 3D space within the model to assess the effect of static stress changes associated with seismic activity > Data from large events was integrated onto specific structures, where displacements associated with large events were integrated onto the plane of structure in question. This paper describes the methodology and results obtained from each of the above processes and include insights into the mining process that were previously unfathomable using standard linear elastic numerical modelling. The way forward for this rock engineering assessment of partial shaft pillar extraction is also discussed.

"TiCl4 slurry containing valuable metals is an unavoidable by-product of the titanium ore chlorination process. The recovery of these valuable metals, which include titanium, niobium, tantalum, and aluminum, is an urgent issue to tackle in the titanium industry. The results of this investigation show that the valuable metallic elements can be recovered from the slurry by evaporation in a sealed container and leaching with dilute hydrochloric acid. After evaporation at 200°C for 60 minutes, nearly 99% of the titanium was recovered in the form of TiCl4, which was formed by the reaction of the TiO2 in the slurry with AlCl3. After evaporation, metals like niobium, aluminum, and tantalum remained in the residue. By leaching with 2.1 mol/L HCl at a L/S ratio of 6:1 mL/g at 80°C for 60 minutes, the soluble metals, such as aluminum, iron, and copper were all removed from the residue, and the niobium and tantalum were further enriched in the leach residue. A concentrate containing 53.40 wt% Nb and 5.57 wt% Ta was obtained by washing the leach residue with dilute aqueous ammonia under stirring. A potential waste water purifying agent containing 263.75 g/L AlCl3 was produced by purifying the leaching solution with Al(OH)3 and modified polyacrylamide. IntrodutionTitanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) is an important intermediate in titanium metallurgy that is widely used in the production of titania and titanium sponge (Akhtar, Xiong, and Pratsinis, 1991). In conventional titanium metallurgical processes, high-titanium materials such as synthetic rutile and high-titanium slag are reacted with chlorine to produce TiCl4 in a fluidized-bed furnace. Accompanying elements, such as Al, Nb, and Fe also react with chlorine to form chlorides, which are mixed with gaseous TiCl4 (Anderson, 1917). In the condensation process, gaseous TiCl4 is refrigerated and high-boiling-point chlorides are precipitated in the liquid TiCl4 to form a slurry containing 50~60 wt% TiCl4 (Wang, Xiang, and Wang, 2012).Various methods have been proposed to recover TiCl4 from the slurry, including microwave heating and spray drying (Wang, Xiang, and Wang, 2012, Wang et al., 2010a). To date, the only way to recover the TiCl4 is to return the slurry to the fluidized-bed furnace. However, this causes fluctuations in the temperature in the furnace, resulting in incomplete reaction between titanium-rich materials and chlorine. Therefore, the slurry is often rinsed with water and neutralized by adding lime, which caused serious environmental pollution and wastes a valuable resource (Roy, Bhatt, and Rajagopal, 2003)."

The upsurge in cobalt price and demand is propelled by high demand from the electronics and electric vehicle industry. Konkola Copper Mines has cobalt occurring with copper in the ratio 1:10 in ore. The ore is treated in the concentrator and recovered at the smelter as an alloy (Cu 70%, Co 4%–7%, 15% Fe). Subsequent processing of the cobalt alloy is challenging, with very few plants able to treat it, leading to marketing challenges. Konkola Copper Mines sought to improve the cobalt alloy by producing a slag that is easier to handle and process in subsequent processes. Cobalt alloy (3.60% Co, 85.4% Cu) was re-melted in a copper bath four times the mass of the alloy. Silica and lime were added for phase separation and fire refining commenced. Following completion of fire refining and after holding the temperature at 1200°C, cobalt-rich slag was skimmed and blister copper was cast into anodes for electrorefining

This paper describes some important aspects associated with historical underground measurements in South African gold and coal mines. Deformation measurements were used to confirm the use of elastic theory to simulate the rock mass behaviour in the Witwatersrand gold mines in the 1960s. Although a prominent time-dependent component of stope closure was measured as early as the 1930s, it was ignored owing to the benefit of adopting elastic theory. Neglecting the time-dependent response of the rock for many decades resulted in important aspects such as the effect of mining rate, the effect of advance per blast, and the need for enhanced design criteria not being explored. Recent work is only now starting to address this gap in knowledge. In-situ measurements of large coal specimens in the 1960s and 1970s indicated that a linear formula may possibly be a better approximation of coal pillar strengths. This alternative formulation was never adopted, however, as the power law strength formula was already deeply entrenched in the industry at that stage. In spite of these apparent failures to continuously generate and adopt new knowledge, a key lesson learnt is that major advances in rock mechanics will not be possible without careful monitoring of the rock mass behaviour in experimental sites. Areas requiring further research, such as pillar strength formulae for the Bushveld Complex and enhanced design criteria for the gold mines, can only be developed using extensive undergroundmonitoring programmes.

Post-mining land use for the production of industrial crops has the potential to mitigate environmental and socio-economic impacts of mine closure and stimulate post-mining economic growth. Fibre-rich plants are of particular interest due to their multi-product potential. In the South African context, where there are many abandoned and end-of-life mines near human settlements, an opportunity presents to assess the feasibility of transforming post-mining land into productive land and building resilient communities through the development of multi-product value chains from fibre-rich plants such as kenaf, hemp or bamboo. This paper provides an overview of the plant selection criteria, phytoremediation potential and the downstream options for the recovery of products and value from bast fibre plants (hemp and kenaf) and bamboo. Based on findings from a comprehensive review of the published literature, as well as interviews with relevant experts within South Africa, it appears that bast fibre plants are the best downstream option for producing ‘green’ textiles and high-end niche products, whereas bamboo is more suitable as a replacement for conventional timber. Although fibre plants have the potential to extract metals from soils, high concentrations may inhibit plant growth and affect the quality of the final fibre product. Further site-specific studies would thus be required to select the best route for both land remediation and optimal product recovery. In this study, potassium ferrocyanide, a non-toxic cyanide precursor in dark and diffuse reflection environments, was applied as a reagent for the leaching of gold. The free cyanide ions were gradually released from the potassium ferrocyanide solution under the ultraviolet light. Orthogonal leaching experiments were performed in gold ore to analyse the effect of solution pH, potassium ferrocyanide dosage, and temperature in potassium ferrocyanide solution system under UV light. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to explore the role of potassium ferrocyanide in gold leaching, Optimised results showed that the gold recovery reached 67.74% in a high-alkaline environment at a 12.6 pH, 3.8 kg/t potassium ferrocyanide dosage, 62°C, and irradiance of 10mW/cm-2. The gold leaching kinetics was monitored by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) of potassium ferrocyanide solution. The results indicate that the gold extraction process consists of two processes: adsorption and leaching, and a rigid adsorption layer formed on the reaction surface. Furthermore, Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of the gold sensor surface after leaching reaction showed that -C≡N appears on the gold sensor surface, and the gold is oxidised to form AuCN complexes. This study investigates the effect of ammonium thiosulfate on the leaching of gold from the contacts of unpopulated cut electronic printed circuit boards (PCBs). Studies in the literature show ammonium thiosulfate to be a viable option in comparison to the commonly used but hazardous cyanide leaching route. However, the simultaneous dissolution of Cu interferes with the Au leaching reaction, often limiting the extraction to moderate levels. To optimize the system, an ammoniumthiosulfate system containing 0.5M ammonia, 0.5M ammonium thiosulfate, and Cu(II) sulfate at varying concentrations was studied as an alternative hydrometallurgical option for the recovery of gold from PCB. Tests were done with unpopulated standardized model PCBs (cut to 15 x 30mm pieces). Gold extraction of 47.3% was achieved after a 24-hour leaching experiment with a 0.02M copper background concentration. Further experiments focused using different initial background Cu concentrations (0M – 0.1M) to determine its effect on both gold and copper extractions. An initial Cu concentration of 0.045M resulted in the highest gold extraction, with 93.7% extraction after 6 hours of leaching. Further analysis of the data shows that the kinetic rate of gold leaching is correlated in a first-order dependence with the actual copper concentration in the solution, which increases with the concomitant dissolution of copper and gold from the PCBs. A lower threshold of 0.017M and an upper threshold of 0.15M copper in solution were determined, in between which gold extraction shows this first-order rate increase. The upper threshold is potentially linked to the onset of copper precipitation, which blinds the metal surfaces, slowing further leaching. The findings of this study suggest that in an industrial recovery operation of gold from waste PCB using the thiosulfate method, copper concentrations need to be carefully monitored, and the process should preferably operate with uncut or coarsely cut untreated boards to minimize exposure to copper circuits.

Improving student success rates without compromising the quality of graduates is one of the biggest challenges expanding university programmes are facing in South Africa. By establishing a new Mine Design Laboratory (MDL) for higher learning in Mining Engineering, the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits Mining) has achieved one of the important goals in its five-year strategic plan, i.e. to improve throughput in all years of study. Although the establishment of the laboratory has been a costly exercise, results so far have shown an improved success rate in most subjects taught in the facility. This paper outlines the design and equipment of the laboratory, the facilities incorporated, a comparison with the old laboratory, and the performance of students?all of which indicate how important it is to have proper facilities to improve the teaching of, and learning by, large classes. Through this initiative, Wits Mining has taken an important step that will contribute to addressing the skills shortages in the mining industry.

"A model of the flotation process can be used effectively for design and control. For design purposes it can be used to predict the performance of a large plant from laboratory and pilot plant data. It can be used for control purposes to assess the utility of any proposed operating modification to an existing plant, and it can also be used to determine optimal control settings for best operating performance.A model has been developed that will allow for variations in feed properties and for variations in fineness of grind. The model can be used to assess the effects of reagent addition rate, aeration rate and pulp level on plant performance and these are the control variables that are used individually or together in all operating flotation plants. The model provides for a distribution in the values for flotation rate constants, particle size and mineral fraction, and, because of its complexity, requires a large computer when it is to be applied to a typical plant configuration. The computational method that is used to apply this model to such configurations is described in this paper, and particular attention is paid to the problem of allowing for feedback of tailings from cleaners and recleaners."

In April 2013 a 48 MVA submerged arc furnace producing silicomanganese was excavated in South Africa. Since the high shell temperatures recorded in the tap-hole area resulted in the furnace being switched out for relining, the tap-hole area was excavated systematically. A refractory wear profile of the tap-hole area with affected hearth and sidewall refractory was obtained in elevation. The carbon ramming paste in front of, above, andbelow the tap-hole was worn, as was the SiC with which the tap-hole was built. A clay mushroom formed but was detached from the refractories. Thermodynamic and mass-transfer calculations were conducted to quantify the potential for wear by chemical reaction between refractory and slag and refractory and metal in the tap-hole area. It was found that chemical reaction between refractory and slag or metal could offer only a partial explanation for the wear observed; erosion is expected to contribute significantly to wear.

The anisotropic behaviour of “Athens Schist” has been brought out through the testing of specimens with varying orientation of schistosity with respect to the major principal stress under uniaxial, triaxial and dynamic conditions. A large number of results from tests on intact rock specimens of the “Athens Schist” were statistically analysed and evaluated. Le comportement anisotropique des roches du système “Schistes d’ Athènes” a été déterminé sur des épreuves avec une orientation différente de la schistosité par rapport à l’axe de chargement sous des conditions axiales, triaxiales et dynamiques. Un grand nombre des résultats a été statistiquement analysé et discuté. Zur Bestimmung der anisotropen Eigenschaften der Athen Schiefer wurden einaxialen, dreiaxialen und dynamischen Kompressionsversuchen an Gesteinskernen durchgeführt, bei denen die Belastungsachse verschiedenen Neigungen gegen die Schieferung hat. Die Messreihen an anisotropen unzerreissbaren Fels Samplen von Athen Schiefer wurden statistisch analysiert.

Fragmentation analysis is an essential part of the optimization process in any mining operation. The costs of loading, hauling, and crushing the rock are strongly influenced by the size distribution of the blasted rock. Several direct and indirect methods are used to analyse or predict fragmentation, but none is entirely applicable to fragmentation assessment in sublevel caving mines, mainly because of the limitations imposed by the underground environment and the lack of all the required data to adequately describe the rock mass. Over the past few years, measurement while drilling (MWD) data has emerged as a potential tool to provide more information about the in-situ rock mass. This research investigated if MWD can be used to predict rock fragmentation in sublevel caving. The MWD data obtained from a sublevel caving mine in northern Sweden were used to find the relationship between rock fragmentation and the nature of the rock mass. The loading operation of the mine was filmed for more than 12 months to capture images of loaded load-haul-dump (LHD) buckets. The blasted material in those buckets was classified into four categories based on the median particle size (X50). The results showed a stronger correlation for fine and medium fragmented material with rock type (MWD data) than coarser material. The paper presents a model for prediction of fragmentation, which concludes that it is possible to use MWD data for fragmentation prediction.

Creatine was used as a lixiviant for gold dissolution from gold ore. The effects of creatine concentration, temperature, leach time, and pH were examined for their influence on extent of gold dissolution. The results show that at a temperature of 75°C and pH 11.5, gold dissolution increased from 51% to 88% on increasing creatine concentration from 25 to 50 g/t. Further increase in creatine concentration showed a negative effect on the gold dissolution. Gold dissolution increased from 47% to 87% by increasing the temperature from 25°C to 55°C, and from 61% to 89% by increasing pH from 10 to 11.5. Under the optimum conditions of solids’ content of 30%, pH 11.5, creatine concentration of 100 g/t, temperature of 75°C, and hydrogen peroxide addition of 2%, about 90% of the gold could be dissolved from the ore after 24 h. A comparison between creatine and cyanide leaching showed that 90% gold dissolution was achieved at a cyanide concentration of 300 g/t, which is three times higher than the creatine concentration under optimal conditions.
