Production of oxygen on the moon can be achieved by reduction of lunar soil. One such reduction technology, hydrogen reduction, favours a high proportion of ilmenite in the feedstock. Ilmenite is present in lunar soil as a minor mineral phase, but it can be upgraded using electrostatic separation. This study presents the results of a preliminary investigation into the operating parameters and sensitivities of a free-fall electrostatic mineral separator for lunar applications. Samples of ballotini and ilmenite as well as simple binary mixtures of the two were tribocharged on copper and passed through a uniform electrostatic field. The field is varied to change the electrostatic force acting on the particles. The proportion of material reporting to the positive electrode collectors, negative electrode collectors or the central collector was measured to determine the separation performance. The data confirmed that the charge transferred from the tribocharger to each species is in agreement with the triboelectric series; ballotini was found to charge positively on copper and ilmenite negatively. Particle-particle contacts were dominant, however, resulting in a somewhat symmetrical particle distribution in the collectors. These findings indicate that the copper tribocharger design requires optimisation in order to substantially increase particle-wall contacts. Four binary mixtures with feed grades of ilmenite ranging from 5% to 20% were prepared and tested. This study found that a higher ilmenite head grade resulted in a higher concentrate grade (26.3% from a head grade of 20%) with low recovery (3.4%). In contrast, the lower feed grade resulted in a low concentrate grade but higher recovery. The mass yield of ilmenite was 1.4 times greater for the highest-grade feed than for the lowest. A subsequent study into the reprocessing of middling fraction found a nearly constant relationship between cumulative grade and recovery. The Jayant opencast operation is one of the largest opencast coal mines in India. Prior to 2008 the mine experienced a number of dragline dump failures, which was a major hindrance in sustaining production. Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) and the mine management engaged several design, research, and academic institutions to carry out dump slope stability studies, particularly of dragline dumps. BirlaInstitute of Technology prepared a report on the investigations in May 2009. In this paper we review the findings of the report and the measures taken to tackle the safety aspects of dragline dumps.

"Pillar design for underground mining is typically done using empirical formulae or numerical modelling. Practical experience and recent literature, nevertheless, illustrate the shortcomings of these design approaches. Ongoing monitoring of pillars is therefore recommended to minimize the risk associated with these designs.In a mine where a large number of pillars are cut, different pillar strengths can be expected owing to variations in rock mass strength from area to area. This problem is compounded by the fact that in mining environments the pillars are not always cut according to the prescribed dimensions. Although the original design using either empirical methods or modelling may predict stable pillars, unstable pillars will be encountered in reality. Very conservative designs with large factors of safety may circumvent this problem, but this approach is uneconomical.A possible solution to localized stability problems may be to enhance the strength of a few unstable pillars. It may even be hypothesized that reinforcing a few critical pillars may prevent ‘pillar runs’ on a much larger scale. Rockbolting, strapping of pillars, and pillar shotcreting have occasionally been used in the past as possible solutions. It appears that these have not been successful in all cases and large collapses have occurred in spite of the pillar remedial work.The authors investigated the strapping of pillars by conducting laboratory tests on cabled rock specimens. The results were qualitatively compared to actual attempts of pillar reinforcement available in the literature, as well as additional observations in an old haematite roomand- pillar mine in Spain. Based on these results, the value of steel cabling and mesh wrapped around pillars to improve stability is demonstrated. Some cases where this approach will not be successful are also discussed."

South Africa is one of the leading producers and exporters of coal globally. A significant amount of the country’s production is obtained from previously mined underground bord and pillar workings. This coal is in the form of pillars and remnants on the roof and floor of the old workings. The good quality coal pillars were left behind as primary support during underground bord and pillar mining operations. Due to the depletion of virgin coal reserves, the pillars and remnant coal are now removed using opencast mining rather than underground methods. However, the secondary extraction of pillars and remnant coal from the old workings using opencast methods entails some serious challenges that have a negative impact on the safety and productivity of the operations, affecting both personnel and machinery. If these risk factors and challenges are managed properly, then the opencast mining operations could remove the pillars safely at recoveries competitive with those of virgin coal operations. In this study we review the recurring challenges affecting opencast pillar mining by means of field investigations and consultations with experts at five opencast pillar mining operations, and evaluate the best practices used to combat these challenges. It was found that each mine has its own unique conditions and challenges.

The Mine Health and Safety Act No. 29 of 1996, as amended, embeds an occupational health and safety management system that facilitates communication between representatives of the state, capital, and labour. In underground mines, two communication loops between these role players serve to separate the production chain of command from the political tripartite relations. Worker-elected health and safety representatives are involved in both communication loops, but are severely constrained in escalating their occupational health and safety concerns to the legalpolitical level. This has a direct bearing on the exercise of the Right to Refuse Dangerous Work (RRDW). As previously reported, health and safety representatives were found to primarily consult their production supervisors in preference to their trade-union representatives. This follow-up article presents production supervisor perspectives on the RRDW. The study demonstrates how, for mineworkers, the two distinct communication subsystems constrain, rather than facilitate, implementation of the RRDW.

A two-dimensional finite difference model has been developed to describe the reduction of kilogram quantities of dehydrated phosphogypsum. The model’s scope has been limited to focus on the heat transfer and reactions that occur within a mass of material contained in a vessel inside a furnace rather than also including the effects of heat transfer to the vessel. Changes in the heat transfer properties (k, ρ, and Cp) are incorporated as the composition of the mass changes as the chemical reactions progress. The model is validated against experimental data, with samples heated to 1000°C at 3°C min−1 while purging with nitrogen gas. A sensitivity analysis of model predictions to the pre-exponential factor of the reaction rate constant of the main chemical reaction and the thermal conductivity of the powder bed indicated that, at the envisaged process conditions, the behaviour of the system depends much more on the rate of heat transfer than on the rate of the chemical reaction. The model demonstrated a significant increase in accuracy when the thermal conductivity was modelled to increase linearly with temperature compared to assuming a constant value.

The research described considers whether the variability in coal material strength, as derived through a series of uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests, could be used to indicate the variability in coal pillar strength. The aim is to be able to use a distribution of UCS tests as input into the coal pillar strength calculation. This will allow the pillar design to be expressed in terms of a probability of failure rather than as the commonly used safety factor. To achieve this, the bulk strength factor associated with commonly used pillar strength formulae was replaced with a distribution of UCS results divided by an adjustment factor. The factor was determined so as to ensure that the resulting bulk strength does not deviate from the statistically determined bulk strength published in the original formulae. This approach enabled pillar strength distributions to be obtained using industry-accepted strength formulae, subsequently allowing for a probability of failure to be calculated for a specific pillar design. Using a regional coal material strength curve as a baseline, coalfields in which the coal is stronger than the regional mean can be identified and the pillar designs optimized. This is based on the stronger coals achieving lower probabilities of failure at similar safety factors. The research has considered actual UCS data from multiple mines in the Mpumalanga coalfields of South Africa, and has proved that the variability in material strength between coalfields could allow for some optimization using the proposed approach. Based on the data used in the study, a 2.78% increase in extraction could be achieved. However, further research will be required to validate the results of the study in an underground environment.

In this paper we develop a physics-based model for lining erosion in steel ladles. The model predicts the temperature evolution in the liquid slag, steel, refractory bricks, and outer steel shell of the ladle. The flow of slag and steel is due to forced convection induced by inert gas injection, vacuum treatment (extreme bubble expansion), natural convection, and waves caused by the gas stirring. The lining erosion takes place by dissolution of refractory elements into the steel or slag. The mass and heat transfer coefficients inside the ladle during gas stirring are modelled based on wall functions which take the distribution of wall shear velocities as a critical input. The wall shear velocities are obtained from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for a sample of scenarios, spanning out the operational space, and a model is developed using curve fitting. The model is capable of reproducing both thermal and erosion evolution well. Deviations between model predictions and industrial data are discussed. The model is fast and has been tested successfully in a ‘semi-online’ application. The model source code is available to the public at [https://github.com/SINTEF/refractorywear].

The initial evaluation of a coal deposit often raises uncertainty with regard to the accuracy of the reported Resources and Reserves. Reconciliation of results from mining and beneficiation with the original raw field data highlights deficiencies in original estimations. Credible Resource and Reserve estimation forms the basis on which an entire mining enterprise is motivated, initiated, funded, and established as a commercially viable proposition. This is required for sustainable extraction purposes and to support vital downstream industries such as power generation. Accurate determination of the density of the matrix of the material being evaluated is the key to credible values being obtained for Resources and Reserves. Losses between 15% and 20% of the Resource/Reserve can be realized if incorrect densities are applied to the tonnage derivation. Coal plies and particles have different relative densities, determined by the maceral composition, rank, and mineral and moisture content. These factors in turn contribute to the moisture, volatile matter, ash and carbon contents of a coal, which affect the overall density of the raw coal. More specifically, the relationship of ash to density and the effective matrix porosity were found to be critical in solving the greater majority of the problems in predictive calculations. A major deficiency identified is the inability to determine effective porosity, allowing absorption of adventitious moisture and altering the mass of the core sample. Although the volume of the raw material is altered through crushing, the change in mass after controlled air-drying, used with the original geometrical volume of the raw material, provides a credible air-dry density and allows the determination of the volumetric change related to effective porosity. This parameter can be validated through the evaluation of proximate ash using the ash-adjusted algorithm and a correction for the inherent moisture applied to also give a credible relative density value for an air-dried sample. A combination of theoretical, empirical, and reconciliatory evaluations of the available data, taken from the exploration phase through the mining process to final production, has shown that an integrated approach using the ash-adjusted density (AAD) methodology, in conjunction with other evaluative techniques, provides credible results with a considerably higher degree of accuracy than is currently possible.

It relates how inexorable and accelerating urbanization and industrialization in emerging markets, especially in China and India, will translate into sustained demand for the minerals that South and southern Africa have in abundance. It warns that while countries buying raw materials from South Africa use these inputs as the basis on which to build value-added, employment-creating industries, South Africa is failing to exploit the economic benefits inherent in its mineral wealth, exacerbating its shortage of skills.

Iron ore samples representing the input and output of several jigging experiments were analysed to determine the effect of particle size, shape, and density on jigging performance. Traditionally, the manual measurement of the size and shape of individual particles is very tedious and prone to inaccuracies and inconsistencies. Using a novel multi-view imaging technique the 3-dimensional representations of each particle in the sample was determined. From this representation several size and shape measurements were extracted, and these were correlated with the individual particle density measurements. A rigorous investigation into the confidence associated with density and the size and shape features as a function of sample size was conducted, thus allowing the significance of correlations in the data to be determined. The jig?s performance was seen to be clearly sensitive to density and markedly so to particle size, while the results for shape indicated the need for continued work in the definition of particle shape.

In this paper, four cyanide-utilising bacteria strains were isolated from a gold mine tailings pond, in the Hexi gold mine (Shandong), China. Based on the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence, four strains were identified as Aeromonas hydrophila strain C1, Bacillus mojavensis strain C3, Shewanella oneidensis strain C2, and Aeromonas media strain C4. Based on the cyanide detoxification efficiencies results of the four strains, Bacillus mojavensis C3 had the highest detoxification rate and was selected to assess its efficiency to detoxify cyanide in gold mine tailings at different pH (9.5, 10.5, and 11.6) using cyanide as the sole carbon and nitrogen sources. Strain C3 was capable of detoxifying 46.5mg/L of cyanide-containing gold mine tailings at all tested pH ranges at 30oC, 196 rpm after 15 d. The amounts of cyanide detoxified were 87.5%, 84.1%, and 73.5% at initial pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. The highest cyanide detoxification was observed at pH 9.5. The viable cells growths in the samples were 5.7E+09CFU/mL, 4.9E+09CFU/mL, and 2.7E+09CFU/mL at pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. Free ammonia concentrations were observed as a byproduct of the biodetoxification process. The residual ammonia concentration in the sample was observed at 0.35 mg/L, 0.33 mg/L, and 0.62 mg/L at pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. The highest residual ammonia concentration was noticed at pH 11.6. The amount of cyanide removed by mixed culture strains C3 and C4 was 94.6% and showed a residual free ammonia concentration of 2.6mg/L, as biodetoxification byproduct after 120 h. The pure culture Bacillus mojavensis strain C3 and its mixed culture strains exhibited higher potential to detoxify cyanide-containing gold mine tailings at alkaline pH values and could be cultivated to detoxify gold mine effluents at large-scale. The slag-tailings based artificial reef concrete (ARC) is made of CaO-CaSO4 activated granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) as cementitious material and deslimed gold ore tailings as aggregate. In order to investigate the potential application of the material as ARC, the strength development, hydration characteristics and application performance were investigated under different preparation conditions. Results indicated that using seawater as the mixing water can effectively promote the hydration of slag and generate a large amount of hydration products such as ettringite, CSH gel, hydrotalcite and Friedel ’s salt in the early curing period and so render the material with good early compressive strength. Seawater curing can also accelerate the hydration reaction in the early stage of hydration. The hydration reaction of slag and the compressive strength of ARC can be effectively promoted by increasing the specific surface area of slag. The 28-day compressive strength of the slag-tailings based ARC prepared with 30-50% CaO-CaSO4 activated slag and 50-70% tailings can reach to 19.88-42.87 MPa. Also, the material has a low surface pH value, good resistance to chloride ion penetration, and sulfate corrosion. "Recent geological exploration at Rosh Pinah mine revealed that the mine’s major production is shifting towards the western orefield, which will increase the demand for air flow to be supplied to this area. A snapshot of the ventilation survey carried out in December 2014 at the western orefield drill drive B (WOF-DDRB) showed that the air flow was well below the required standards. In order to improve the existing conditions, possible options were considered and simulated using Ventsim™ software.The best option found was to replace the existing western orefield fans with the larger fans from the inactive southern orefield workings, to increase the air flow in the DDRB district. Simulation showed that as much as 20 m3/s of air can be received at the working faces of WOF 30, compared to the previously received amount of 1.37 m3/s. The economic analysis indicated that the above option can reduce the ventilation cost by N$1.9 million annually. It was also noticed that after implementing this option together with other projects, the ventilation conditions in the mine were greatly improved and currently give no cause for concern. IntroductionA good mine ventilation system should be capable of providing adequate quantity and quality of air to all working faces, and is critical to the occupational health, safety, and comfort of underground employees (Luxbacher and Ramani, 1977; Exikis and Kapageridis, 2006). No ventilation system can remain adequate indefinitely; as the mine workings are extended, the ventilation characteristics such as system pressures, air volumes, leakages, and airway resistances change considerably. Continuous improvement of the ventilation system is needed to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations (Lovejoy, 2010). It also ensures that the right quality and quantity of air is delivered to all the necessary areas at the lowest possible cost. This can be achieved by identifying inefficient airways and poorly ventilated areas in the mine and planning how best to upgrade them.The latest geological exploration shows that the focus of production at Rosh Pinah mine is shifting towards the western orefield (WOF). As mining progressed, the working areas have advanced away from the main fans, which increased the resistance to air flow drastically and resulted in increasing demands being imposed on the main fan in order to supply an adequate air flow. This process also created more leakage paths between the fan and the working areas, which has caused the air to short-circuit before it can reach the faces. Consequently, a much larger quantity of air has to be circulated by the fan so that the stipulated quantity reaches the face, which increases operating costs (Singh et al., 2004)."

The selection of an underground mining method stems from a multivariate analysis that considers geomechanical, geological, economic, and operational parameters. Even after identifying the most compatible method, there is no assurance that the mining company will achieve the best performance. The geological complexity of some deposits requires adaptations of methods described in the literature to obtain more selectivity and reduce mining waste. There are some studies on geometry of underground structures, but a methodology that describes an adaptation of a room-and-pillar mining method for ore bodies with down-dip varying from 20° to 25° is novel. The present work aimed to reduce dilution by adapting the traditional room-and-pillar mining method (TRP) to inclined ore boLittle attention has been paid to the rehabilitation of derelict and ownerless mines in South Africa after their lifespan. This paper aims to explore management gaps in legislation that have resulted in the non-rehabilitation of derelict and ownerless mines in South Africa. There is growing evidence that supports the distressing effects of mining on people living around these mines in the North West Province. This paper was motivated by the current socio-economic status quo of old mining towns, the influx of illegal miners (Zama Zamas), severe environmental damages, and the violence associated with derelict mines. Underpinning this research was an ecosystem approach and integrated resources management principles, which formed the foundation for the decision-making process.The researcher used a mixed-method approach and employed convergent techniques. A semi-structured instrument was used to collect data from 200 respondents. The results indicated that there is a dire need for community-based consultative processes, and an absence of clear guidelines for derelict and ownerless mines to pressure mine management to adhere to rehabilitation standards. Moreover, the mining charter is ambiguous regarding policy implementation, budgetary allocation, and duration of the rehabilitation of these mines. The paper concluded that management challenges associated with derelict mines can be reduced if all stakeholders follow the guidelines as outlined in the environmental legislative framework (NEMA) of South Africa while being open to innovations in line with international best practices. It also contributes towards the development of guidelines for the management and implementation of legislation related to derelict and ownerless mines in South Africa from a philosophical, theoretical, and policy perspectivedies. This new method is entitled short-hole room-and-pillar (SHRP). The equations that measure the dilution are defined according to the geometry of stopes and openings. The results comprise comparative analyses of the operational and planned dilutions to measure the performance of the SHRP method. The average operating dilution of the SHRP method was more than five times lower than the planned dilution according to the TRP method. Low operational dilution indicates high selectivity of the method and its potential to reduce underground mining tailings.

"Mining companies are under constant pressure to reduce their cost structures to sustain profitability. In mines using an open stoping mining method, dilution often has a significant effect on profitability. At Target mine in South Africa, dilution in some open stopes was found to exceed 10%, falls of ground being a major contributor to the problem. This dilution can reduce the recovered grade from 5.5 to 4.5 g/t, resulting in a potential loss of about R21 million per month based on a gold price of R240 000 per kilogram. In addition to the cost of dilution, the cost of damage to, or loss of, trackless equipment as a direct result of falls of ground in open stopes is significant. Other associated costs include transport, hoisting, secondary blasting, milling, and plant treatment of waste material. Stable open stopes are essential in order to reduce falls of ground. Back-analyses of stope instability at Target mine have indicated that conventional rock mass failure criteria are unsuitable for stope design. An alternative strain-based criterion has been developed, and has proved to be very successful, allowing the stability of open stopes to be calculated reliably. Since its implementation in 2010, dilution and equipment damage have decreased markedly, creating value for the mine. IntroductionMines that make use of an open stoping mining method aim to extract only the ore, leaving the waste behind. Many orebodies have well-defined boundaries between the ore and the waste rock. In such orebodies, the introduction of waste into the ore due to overbreak dilutes the grade. In massive disseminated orebodies, dilution is less problematic. Overblasting, falls of ground, or other causes may result in dilution. A study undertaken in Canada (Pakalnis et al., 1995) found that approximately 51% of all underground metal mines utilized open stoping mining methods and, from surveys conducted at these mines, open stoping operations experienced dilutions of up to 20%, and occasionally more. Dilution of this magnitude has a significant economic impact on any mining venture. Research carried out in Australia by Capes (2009) came to the same conclusion."

Dense medium separation (DMS) is critical to the operation of coal and diamond beneficiation plants. It is also utilised in iron ore, manganese, chromite and andalusite beneficiation as well as pre-concentration for platinum-bearing UG2 ore. Gravity concentration plays an important role in the processing of diamonds, coal, gold, platinum, titanium minerals, zircon, chromite, iron ore and manganese. The DMS and Gravity Concentration operations and technology in South Africa conference will focus on the operation of DMS and Gravity Concentration circuits in the South African Mining Industry. The current status of the technologies and equipment employed will be presented as well as future developments. The conference was set up to showcase South African DMS and Gravity Concentration operations and provide a forum where operators, technology and equipment suppliers can engage in knowledge sharing. The papers cover a wide spectrum of topics, including descriptions of operations, optimisation projects, new capital projects, equipment applications, process monitoring and process selection. Most commodities and unit processes associated with DMS and Gravity Concentration are covered. The conference venue was selected to be the CSIR Convention Centre in Pretoria. The CSIR has contributed to DMS research in South Africa and it is located not far from many coal, diamond, gold, platinum and chrome mines that extensively utilise DMS and Gravity Concentration in their beneficiation plants. I believe that the papers and presentations submitted for this conference will provide a valuable future reference for DMS and Gravity Concentration, thus making the work of all the contributors to this conference highly rewarding and worthwhile.

Following the Coalbrook disaster in 1960, research into coal pillar strength resulted in the adoption of the concept of a safety factor for the design of stable pillars in South African coal mining. At the time when the original statistical analysis was performed by Salamon and Munro in the early 1960s, 27 cases of failed pillar workings were considered suitable for inclusion in the database of failed pillars. Pillar failure did not stop after the introduction of the safety factor formula by Salamon and Munro (1967). In the ensuing years, pillars that were created before the application of the formula deteriorated and later failed, as did ones that were created after the introduction of the formula. This means that over time, the database of failed pillar cases increased in size, allowing ever more reliable analyses to be performed. The number of failed cases in the database had grown from the original 27 in the 1960s to 86 by 2011. All the failed cases are contained in the updated database. The database of stable pillars, which is also used in the derivation of strength formulae, has now been extended from 125 to 337 cases. The new database of intact pillar cases is more complete as it bridges the time gap between the Salamon and Munro (1967) and the Van der Merwe (2006) databases. The original requirements for inclusion into the database were satisfied in the compilation of this latest collection. The characteristics of the original database of intact pillars did not change in a meaningful way. The mining depth and pillar dimensions of the new database are largely as they were in the original database. Time-related trends with regard to pillar dimensions and depth of mining could not be found, indicating that the geometrical parameters of coal mining in South Africa have not changed meaningfully in approximately a century of mining. The characteristics of cases in the updated database of failed pillars does not differ substantially from the one published by Van der Merwe (2006). The same difference between that database and the original Salamon and Munro database, namely that the average safety factor of the failed cases had increased dramatically, from 1.0 to 1.5, is still apparent. This may be due to the inclusion of more failures from specific areas that exhibit a disproportionate number of failures at higher safety factors. These areas are the Vaal Basin, Klip River, and Free State coalfields. The new database confirms yet again that there is no correlation between the safety factors of failed pillars and their time of failure. The safety factor on its own is thus not a reliable predictor of longterm stability of pillars. Keywords coal pillar, stable pillar cases, pillar collapse, pillar data base.
