Low-temperature adiabatic heat-capacity determinations were made by the Bureau of Mines in the temperature range from 5 to 300 K for the two crystalline modifications of zinc sulfide, sphalerite (ß) and wurtzite (a). The entropy at 298.15 K of sphalerite was evaluated as l4.02±0.04 cal/deg mole and wurtzite, l4.06±0.04 cal/deg mole.

"This paper is the outcome of thorough investigation into the value of the previous methods used for deriving production decline curves. It is highly important that methods be employed that are fundamentally sound and also practicably applicable. Six methods commonly used were studied. Some of these were found to be fundamentally in error; some save reliable curves but involved much work and time in the preparation; others gave reliable curves with less time and effort.It was found that of the methods previously employed the ""family curve"" method described in Bull. 134 Amer. Inst. Feb. 1918, pp. 499-500 by Lewis and Beal, was probably the most satisfactory. The now method given in this paper ploys the same principles as the ""family curve"" method, but is mathematical instead of graphical,The engineer and the oil man should carefully boar in mind both the use and the limitations of the average production curve such as is derived by the ""family curve"" method or other methods mentioned. Estimations of future productions or of underground oil reserves of a particular tract or well should be made from the production records of the tract or the well itself wherever such records are satisfactory. The use of the average curve of a district or field should be applied only to those properties or wells where there are not sufficient data to construct individual or tract production records, or where the productive life so short that a satisfactory individual record can not be obtained."

"The premium on gold in London, reflecting the further depreciation of the pound sterling, has risen from about 22 per cent as noted in these reports for December, to about 28%. This will enable more South African gold mines to come into the profitably ;reducing class, and will also tend to increase the gold production from that region.Figures are now at hand showing the drop that occured in the sold output in the Transvaal, South Africa, during 1919, in which year 8,330,091 ounces of gold were produced against 8,418, 292 ounces in 1918, a decrease of 88,200 ounces. Annual gold output from this, the most important gold area in the world, has dropped almost one million ounces in the past three years, as the following table shows:Although the decrease in not as marked comparatively as that of 1918 over 1917, it is a further indication of the general world-wide curtailment of gold production, and the steady decline in production everywhere that is going on and will continue until some rational means is found to stimulate production, or until conditions return to normal.The subject of relief for the gold miner has received attention in all parts of the world, particularly in the United States and South Africa in the past few years, but in spite of all the plane that have been formulated to remedy the situation none have yet been adopted anywhere, due mainly to great danger of tampering with the gold standard. In the United. States a plan has advanced by H. N. Lawrie of the American Mining Congress to tax the new gold entering into manufacture of jewelry or the arts in general, as furnishing some measure of increased compensation to unprofitable gold mining.Gold production in Australia, as indication by figures issued by the Australian Mines department, shows a marked decrease, and for the first ten months of 1919 amounted to 914,957 ounces against 1,073,317 ounces for a similar period in 1918. Western Australia produces about two thirds of all the gold rained on that continent. The total gold production of Australia for 1919 will reflect the universal decrease in output.Ever since June 7, when the embargo on the export of gold Was lifted, there has been steady and heavy outflow of gold from this country, as a consequence of which considerable gold accumulated during the war has been exported. Working with or near underground coal mining equipment is hazardous because of the multiple sources of energy and adverse environmental conditions. Of the 4169 injuries reported to Coal Services during the three years to June 2005,447 were associated with continuous miners, 232 with LHD (load-haul- dump) vehicles, 140 with shuttle cars, and 140 with personnel transport - a total of 959, or 23% of all injuries reported during the period. An analysis of the injury narratives accompanying these injury claims highlights a number of opportunities for controlling injury risks. Using the frequency of reported injuries for the prioritisation of risk control strategies has limitations because of the tendency to underestimate the importance of relatively uncommon but potentially high consequence events. Injury reports also underestimate the contribution of risk factors such as whole body vibration, which have a long-term cumulative contribution to an elevated risk of injury. However, taking these limitations into consideration, the results of the injury narrative analysis suggests the following hazards as the highest priority for elimination or control: • handling continuous miner cable • strain while bolting • slipping off continuous miner platform • inadvertent or incorrect operation of bolting controls, and operation of controls while a person is in a position of danger • hitting potholes or other roadway abnormality • collisions while driving underground vehicles

This report describes a study that examined load transfer mechanics in longwall shield supports as part of the Bureau of Mines research program to optimize support design and utilization. The objectives of this study were to determine the contribution of the leg cylinders and the caving shield-lemniscate assembly towards full shield vertical and hor-izontal load resistance capability and to determine how the interaction of these members affect overall shield response. Load-displacement characteristics of the leg cylinders and the caving shield-lemniscate assembly, independent of the full shield, were evaluated from controlled displacement tests in the Bureau's mine roof simulator and responses were compared with full shield responses to identify load transfer mechanics. It is concluded from this research that the participation of the caving shield-lemniscate assembly significantly affects the response of the shield support. It is likely that the caving shield-lemniscate assembly is not participating fully in current shield designs because of translational freedom in the numerous pin joints. It is also concluded that the shield will respond differently to different boundary condi-tions resulting from interaction with the strata. This report describes load transfer mechanics of shield supports and the implication of these research findings on shield design and utilization.

"IntroductionInhalation of crystalline silica is often associated with the development of pulmonary disease (Ziskind et al., 1976). Recently, it has been proposed that freshly sheared silica .may have surface properties that make it more reactive with lung tissue than aged silica, and that this unique reactivity ·of freshly crushed silica enhances its pathogenicity. A recent study in our laboratory strongly supports this theory (Vallyathan, et al., 1988a; 1988b). We found that grinding of silica cleaves bonds in a silica tetrahedral lattice generating reactive free radicals sites on the surface of the silica particles. The presence of surface radicals on freshly ground silica was monitored by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The ESR signal generated from fresh silica in air is characteristic of Si-0 and Si radicals. Evidence, i.e., the ESR signal after the addition of a spin trap (DMPO) and its sensitivity to ethanol, indicates that these silicon-based surface radicals can react with water to form hydroxyl radicals (OH). Results also indicate that these surface radicals make fresh silica more cytotoxic than aged silica; i.e., fresh silica causes more membrane damage as evidenced by hemolysis and lipid peroxidation. Therefore, the presence of reactive sites on the surface of freshly cleaved silica may play a significant role in its pathogenicity.If surface· free radicals are related to cytotoxicity, then screening dusts for the existence of such radicals may predict their relative pathogenicity. Since an ESR spectrometer is not available to many laboratories, the objective of this study was to develop a quick and simple technique to monitor the existence of reactive surface sites on dust. The technique chosen was the measurement of chemiluminescence using a liquid scintillation counter; i.e., an instrument which·would be accessible to most investigators."

Laboratory research demonstrated that ceramic wall and floor tile can be produced from electric furnace phosphorus slags composed of calcium silicates. Grinding the slag in a pebble mill, followed by magnetic removal of deleterious magnetite, produced a raw material that could be compounded and formed into wall tile by dry pressing, sintering, and glazing. The effects of process variables such as forming pressure and sintering temperature were investigated. Wall tile bodies produced by this method were comparable to commercial tile. The tiles were readily glazed to a smooth shiny finish and met ASTM Specifications C34-62 for structural clay load-bearing tile. The estimated cost of producing wall tile by this method compared favorably with the retail market value for similar wall tile. Addition of borax or other additives to the ground slag followed by dry pressing and firing likewise produced a commercial grade of floor tile.

Several processes being developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines to provide new and more efficient uses for coal require practical methods for removing dust from hot gases. Filters provide such means. The efficiency of filters made of aluminum silicate fibers and porous stainless steel was determined. The results obtained with the fibers were previously reported.5 In this investigation tests were made with three porosities of stainless steel filter material (grades C, D, and E) at a gas flow of 1,000 std. c.f.h./sq. ft. of filter, temperatures of 75° and 1,000° F., and dust loadings (as represented by cumulative dust fed) of 100, 1,000, and 10,000 gr./sq. ft. of filter. Pressure drop during the runs ranged from 0.1 to 21 in. of mercury, and dust removal from 25 to 99.93 pct. Filters having the finest pores gave the greatest pressure drop and percentage of dust removal; however, their dust-holding capacity was slightly lower. Usually, their ability to remove a higher percentage of dust at the same pressure drop more than compensated for the slightly lower dust-holding capacity. With increase in temperature, for the same weight rate of flow of gas, the pressure drop increased and the percentage of dust removal decreased. The effect of temperature was probably due to the accompanying change in the linear velocity and viscosity of the gas.

"A convective dispersion model has been utilized to calculate the real-time airborne dust concentration in mine airways using re-entrainment as the only source term for airborne dust. It incorporates two important sources of re-entrainment in mines -- air velocity and movement of objects. The model has a sink term accounting for the deposition of particles along the airway. The model is solved using a finite difference scheme which is coded for computer. The computer model outputs airborne respirable and total dust concentrations along the airway as a function of time. The real-time and average gravimetric concentrations from several in-mine experiments were compared with the results from the simulation of the experimental conditions. This model can be used for estimating airborne dust entrainment due to air velocity, equipment movement, and persons walking. INTRODUCTIONEdwards and Ford (1988) developed a model for coal dust explosion suppression and utilized a predetermined value of threshold velocity for flowing air to pick up dust from floor. Depending on the strength of the removal forces, re-entrainment can increase the airborne dust concentration in mine airways. The most prevalent forces causing re-entrainment in mine airways are the drag and lift forces due to flowing air, and removal forces due to the movement of persons and vehicles. Shankar and Ramani (1991) have investigated the unique characteristics of the re-entrainment phenomenon in mine airways. Experiments on re-entrainment of coal dust particles were conducted in mine airways, and in a wind tunnel (Shankar and Ramani, 1994a, and 1994b). The results from the two experimental studies were found to compare well (Shankar and Ramani, 1995). There is no reported model to determine the airborne dust concentrations due to airflow or persons walking under conditions existing in mines. The present study is a part of a continuing research project in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust on the spatial and temporal behavior of airborne dust in mine airways (Ramani, 1983)."

A NEW record was set for helium shipment in 1962 for the 13th successive year. For the first time since 1949, the production of helium from natural gas at Bureau of Mines plants was less than in the previous year. The Bureau shipped 599.5 million cubic feet, 9 percent more than the 1961 volume, and produced 680.9 million cubic feet-a decrease of 6 percent from the record set in 1961. The Bureau added 77.2 million cubic feet to the volume stored for future use. Of the total 524.6 million cubic feet in storage, 522.4 million cubic feet is accumulated excess production from Bureau of Mines plants. The remaining 2.2 million cubic feet was purchased during 1962 from industry under the helium conservation program. The first two of five private plants began production in December to recover helium for conservation storage and ultimate use. A 425-mile pipeline system to transport helium from the five private plants to the Cliffside field was constructed by the Bureau at a cost of about $8 million.

Underground mining methods at the Gray mine of Tri-State Zinc, Inc., are of special interest because of the low unit costs achieved through use of jumbos and loading equipment mounted un crawler-type tracks and of diesel trucks that haul from the stoping areas to the mill through inclined adits. The operating company, Tri-State Zinc, Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gold Fields American Development Co., Ltd., the latter being the American branch of New Consolidated Gold Fields, Ltd., a British-owned company.

In 1935 , Brown and Yant / described a microprojector ( microscopic arrangement for projecting images on a screen ) for use in counting and measuring the size of dust particles in Owens - jet dust - counter and simila dry samples of dust collected from the air . In 1938 Brown and others , described a modification of this microprojector that could be used also in counting dust in impinger samples . Microprojectors of this second type have been set up by many mining companies and others and have been made commercially available . Hamly and Pullen5/ described a modification of this microprojector for use in making rapid comparative estimates on konimeter samples and other determinations . This report contains information on still another modification named the "midget microprojector " because of its small size .

Lime-soda sinters, made and processed for recovering alumina and soda, consisted of several types of compound structures differing from the ideal dicalcium silicate and sodium aluminate. Many or these compound structures were causes for low alumina recovery and contributed to the relation or leach slurries. Presence or free lime, whether in the sinter or released by hydrolysis of sinter compounds, contributed to relation of leach slurries. Free lime tends to establish the initial viscosity assumed by a leach slurry. Previous investigations by the Bureau of Mines (1, 4)4/ and by other laboratories (5) have demonstrated the technical applicability of the lime-soda sinter process to the recovery of alumina from aluminum silicate materials. The basic concept of the process is sintering aluminum silicate materials with limestone and soda ash for the production of dicalcium silicate and sodium aluminate and then extracting the sodium aluminate by leaching the sinter in causticized liquors. Alumina is precipitated from the pregnant liquors by carbonating with carbon dioxide. Reaction in the sintering operation may be represented by the following simplified equation: A1203?SiO + 2CaCO3 + Na2C03 = 2Ca0?SiO + Na20?Al203 + 3C02

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and small-scale, continuous tests of weathered mica-pegmatite ores from Randolph County, Ala., to determine the feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica concentrates by flotation. Two flotation methods were used in continuous tests for recovery of mica. One method utilized acid-cationic flotation for the recovery of coarse mica and alkaline-anionic-cationic flotation for recovering fine mica. This method yielded mica concentrates containing 98.6 percent mica with a recovery of 85.9 percent. The other method was based on the Bureau-developed alkaline-anionic-cationic method, and yielded concentrates containing 97.5 percent mica with a recovery of over 90 percent. In both methods, preconcentration of the ground ore on a Humphreys spiral was employed to reject over half of the feed in a product virtually free of mica.

High-grade synthetic rutile has been produced in the laboratory from domestic ilmenite concentrates by a new carbonyl process. The ilmenite was first reduced to convert the iron oxides to metal and then treated at temper-atures over 1000 C in high-pressure carbon monoxide (CO) to convert the iron to the pentacarbonyl. Rapid carbonylation was achieved in the presence of small quantities of selected promoters. Maximum iron removal occurred at temperatures between 110° and 130° C at CO pressures from 1,000 to 1,400 psig. Iron pentacarbonyl appeared as liquid and vapor in the reactor and could be removed by gravity flow and vapor transport. More than 90 pct of the iron was extracted in 2-hr experiments at pressures of 1,000 psig and above. The Ti02 product is porous owing to the removal of the iron, has the rutile crystal structure, and is suitable for chlorination. Waste disposal problems associated with the process would be minimal because the iron pentacarbonyl can be decomposed to produce iron powder or pellets for sale and CO for recycling.

The Bureau of Mines conducted ignition, flammability, and decomposition experiments on gas mixtures containing ethylene to determine its flammability characteristics at elevated pressures and ambient temperatures. Pure ethylene was found to propagate a decomposition reaction at 1,000 psig and ambient temperatures when ignited with 1 gram or more of guncotton in a 2-inch-id bomb. The decomposition products were primarily carbon, methane, and hydrogen.

Of the 19 major mine fire events (including thermal events) that have occurred in the last 6 years (2000-2005), it is estimated that remotely constructed mine seals could have been used at 65% of the events to control or suppress the fire. Underground observations of seals that have been remotely installed during mine fire events show that they often do not fully achieve mine roof-to-floor and rib-to-rib closure. Unfortunately, the inability to reliably close the mine void has limited or precluded the regular use of this technology. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is conducting full-scale underground experiments at the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine to identify and remedy existing remote sealing technology shortcomings, to develop novel technologies, and to transfer the new or improved technologies to the mining industry. This paper will discuss the remote mine seal testing program and will provide the results of the in-mine experiments. The Bureau of Mines conducted an analysis to determine criteria for steady-state, laminar flow boundary conditions for a coiled-tube gas viscosimeter by comparing experimental data from a thick-walled, stainless steel capillary in a horizontal, straight-tube condition, with similar data taken after the same capillary was formed into a helix. Overlapping volumetric f10wrates and pressure drops are covered for both configurations at pressure levels of 28, 225, and 1,000 psia at 3000 K. Friction factor, Reynolds number, and Dean number correlation plots show conditions where the coi1ed-tube flow deviates from straight-tube flow. The coiled-tube data indicate departure from Poiseui11e steady-state laminar flow at a Reynolds number close to 390 and a Dean number of about 15. Below these conditions and consistent with the data reported, Dean's circulation appears negligible. For the particular coil used, a conservative upper limit of 10 is chosen for the Dean number corresponding to an upper limit of about 250 for the Reynolds number.
