"The Bureau of Mines has studied blasting practices in metal mines of the Southwest. The investigation of blasting drift rounds showed among other results, that cut-holes in ground difficult to break could be chambered to advantage under some conditions.In open--cut mines, chambering nearly all holes before blasting is the common practice. Two or more free faces are generally maintained in this type of work, and the amount of explosive necessary to break any bench or bank can usually be estimated from the yardage to be moved. However, in blasting drift or tunnel rounds only one free face is available before the cut-holes are shot, and the quantity of explosive required is generally ascertained best by trial.In addition to being the most difficult to break, the cut-holes are the most important of a drift round. When the cut-holes ""break bottom"" less work is required of the other holes, and a full break of the round is generally obtained. In ground difficult to blast, extra care and expense are justified to insure that the cut-holes ""break bottom.""At many mines the work is so organized that all blasting is done at the end of the shift, and a decided advantage would have to be gained to make chambering of the cut-holes economical. Also, in many mines blasting during the shift would not be practical. One or two holes could probably be drilled during the time necessary to do the chambering. However, under certain special conditions, such as in small operations or those where ""leasers"" or contractors are working, drill holes could be chambered should there be an advantage in doing so. Moreover, in some mines it might be practical to chamber the cut-holes at the lunch hour. In ordinary rounds the cut-holes are generally drilled by noon. It would not be necessary to tear down the drill or remove tools from the face to do this work of chambering."

This report presents the results of a research and development program in recovering waste-rolling oils conducted by the Bethlehem Steel Co., before 1954 at its Sparrows Point plant, Sparrow Point, Md., with the cooperation of the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, College Park, Md. The objective of the program was twofold: First, to recover oil for reuse in the plant; and second, to stop pollution, by oil, of the stream and harbor areas in the immediate vicinity of the plant. The sequence of the investigations was laboratory and pilot plant studies on sedimentation, simple aeration, and flotation for the separation of oil and water; and construction of a production unit using standard flotation equipment. This work was only preliminary for the Bethlehem Steel Co. and it has continued research on this problem. Recent progress indicates that new, improved processes will soon replace the flotation units described in this report. The first efforts to separate oil and water by simple sedimentation were unsuccessful. To establish the cause of this failure, microscope examinations and measurements were made on cold-reduction rolling mill cooling-water effluents containing oil in suspension. It was discovered that an average oil globule, held in suspension, was only 0.001 inch in diameter and would not coagulate with other globules for normal sedimentation at room temperature. The next step in the sequence of studies was to coagulate the oil suspension by simple aeration with air under slight pressure. The aeration methods studied were effective in removing up to 68 percent of the total oil but were approaching flotation in principle. The final investigation of the series was flotation of the oil in conventional laboratory-size flotation cells. The small-bubble method, without reagents, floated up to 89 percent of the total oil held in suspension and was the process selected for pilot-plant development.

"The increase in tunneling operations that requires working under pressures greater than that of ordinary atmosphere has raised the question of the use and possible limitations of respiratory protective devices under such unusual conditions. As little, if any, information is available, there is need for a comprehensive study of this subject before specific recommendations can be made. In the absence of such data it seems desirable to make a few preliminary observations regarding the problems associated with wearing respiratory protective devices under increased air pressures.Two distinct problems must be considered--the mechanics of the apparatus used under such conditions and the physiological effects of increased pressures on wearers of respiratory apparatus. These investigations were conducted to determine the feasibility of molten salt electrorefining of zirconium scrap, offgrade sponge, and alloys under contract number AT(11-1)-475 between the Atomic Energy Commission and the Federal Bureau of Mines. Offgrade zirconium sponge having a Brinell hardness of 169 can be refined by this technique to produce metal having, consistently, a Brinell hardness of less than 90. Also, zirconium alloy scrap, approximating zircaloy-2 in composition, can be refined to recover zirconium metal with a Brinell hardness of less than 100 that is essentially free of the major alloying elements. Analysis showed that the quantities of these elements were decreased as follows: iron from 0.27 to 0.002, tin from 1.36 to 0.001, nickel from 0.02 to 0.001, and chromium from 0.12 to 0.002 percent.

The spray fan system repositions regular water sprays to help the normal exhaust face ventilation do a more effective job. The various water sprays help in many ways: 1. Side sprays bring clean air along the side of the miner into the off-curtain corner.

An important goal in the development of coal mining explosives has been to improve their safety characteristics through suitable formulation. In the United States no systematic effort to establish factors influencing the incendivity to firedamp and to coal dust of explosives through research was made until the last decade. In consequence, American permissible explosives underwent only very slight modifications and many remained substantially the same as in the early years. As part of a long range program for increasing the safety of permissible explosives, the Bureau of Mines undertook to determine how the amounts and particle sizes of the principal constituents of these explosives affect their incendivity. It was found that an increase in the relative amount of sodium chloride and a decrease in its particle size significantly decreased the incendivity of our permissible explosives to firedamp (7-9).6 This is in agreement with findings reported by Dolan (4) for compositions of nitroglycerin and salt. One important result of the work at the Bruceton station has been the recent introduction of salt-formulated permissibles by several explosives manufacturers. This paper describes a statistically designed experiment for studying the effects of the particle size of ammonium nitrate and the type of carbonaceous materials used on the incendivity of permissible explosives. Interest in these particular effects goes back as far as the first formulations of coal mine explosives, around 1910 in the United States and even earlier in Great Britain and other countries. "The dust/lung research of the Center has several long-range objectives:* better methods for the early diagnosis of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP);* methods to modify the disease process;* tests to identify toxic products; and* tests to identify individuals with heightened susceptibility to pneumoconiosis.A major immediate objective is to define the mechanism of dust-induced lung disease. This means determining:* dust characteristics that are important in causing lung diseases;* important interactions between dust and lungs; and* earliest detectable stages of the disease.Several of the Center's projects involve exposing lung cells in culture (in vitro) or animal lungs (in vivo) to samples of the suite of characterized mineral dusts described earlier. The responses of the lung cells or tissues to the dusts are being studied in order to better understand how inhaled dusts cause lung disease.One project is studying the effect of dust exposure on the production of mucus by rat tracheal explants in vitro. Mucus is a major factor in clearing inorganic dusts from the lung. Results thus far have shown that exposure of tracheal cultures to coal dust caused a decrease in micin production in comparison to parallel cultures without dust. To examine the effect of in vivo coal dust exposure, rats were maintained in an inhalation chamber for two weeks, and control rats were in an identical, but dust-free chamber. Tracheal explants results indicate that the effect of in vivo dust exposure is similar to that noted in the in vitro experiments.Pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAMs) are a key component of the lung's response to inhaled particulates, and they play several important roles in pulmonary inflammatory and repair processes. PAMs are the cells that actually ingest dust particles. Other studies have shown that they play a critical role in the development of silicosis and asbestosis. The Center is studying the effect of dust exposure on the release of oxygen free radicals (superoxide) by PAMs. Intercellular production of superoxide occurs when PAMs phagocytize particles, such as inhaled bacteria, and is an essential mechanism by which PAMs kill ingested, bacteria. A number of complex physiological events occur during this process which are not clearly understood. It is thought that PAMs containing indigestible materials, such as mineral dusts, overproduce superoxide, or inappropriately release it into the surrounding tissues. If true, this would cause toxicity to surrounding lung cells by peroxidation of the lipids in the cell membranes. In vitro exposure of PAMs to low or high doses of kaolin is inert. Preliminary studies indicate that coating the quartz particles with a surfactant reduces toxicity."

"The Miami-West Palm Beach belt of silica sand, which may be suitable for the manufacture of high-grade glass, extends 65 miles northward from the neighborhood of Miami to the vicinity of West Palm Beach, The sand presumably originated in the host rocks constituting the oceanward slope of the Appalachian Mountains and the Piedmont Plateau of Georgia and the Carolinas. The sand now lies in a long, narrow, and probably thin belt that forms a dune-capped terrace marking a previous stage of submergence. The highest dune crests appear to be no more than 30 feet above sea level, and the water table is about 10 or 15 feet below the general level of the terrace.The width of the belt in several places is known to be more than a mile, and the thickness of the clean glass sand sampled ranged from 4 to more than 7 feet. Visual inspection and the meager data indicate the existence of bodies of glass sand large enough to supply foreseeable markets.Analyses of three samples indicate that beneficiation would make the sand suitable for the better grades of ordinary and flint glass.The prospective grade and quantity of sand, an available market in Florida for glassware, and the expectation of postwar expansion of the new industry of glass producing justify more detailed exploratory work and beneficiation testing.U. S. Route No. 1, Old Dixie Highway, the Seaboard Railway, and the Florida East Coast Railway, all substantially parallel and usually within a width of a mile or two, run along parts of the belt or between it and the coast. In addition to many streets and unpaved roads, a paved road crosses the belt at right angles about every 5 miles. Numerous towns are situated within or near the belt. Any area selected for a mining, processing, and manufacturing plant would be near a railroad, a highway, and water and also accessible to public utilities.The subtropical climate, famous for its pleasantly warm winters, would preclude seasonal interruption of plant operations."

"There is considerable evidence that all mine dusts do not present the same health hazard. Rank of coal and composition, especially silica content of the mine dust, shape, and surface charge are risk factors that affect the incidence and severity of CWP. Current efforts of Center researchers involve characterization of:•,size/shape/composition•,surface and functional groups•,particle interactions.Work is underway to prepare and characterize respirable coal dust samples, and to develop and evaluate techniques and procedures for the characterization of respirable dust. A suite of standard samples including anthracite, medium volatile and high volatile bituminous coals, quartz, clay, and rock dust have been prepared and thoroughly characterized with respect to the distributions of particle size and compositions. A comparison of the morphology of the standard dust particles with similar particles collected in an underground coal mine is given in Figure 43. Samples of these characterized (Standard) dusts have been distributed among various research groups associated with the Center.The aerodynamic diameter of a particle is a particularly important characteristic since this parameter determines the point of deposition in the human respiratory tract. A 3-dimensional numerical model for theoretically determining the equivalent aerodynamic diameter of irregular shaped particles has been developed and used to analyze coal dust particles and a particle shadowing technique has been developed for .experimental 3-dimensional shape analysis (Figure 44). In the theoretical technique, the equivalent aerodynamic diameter of the particle is numerically determined from computation of the fluid drag on the particle. This allows the aerodynamic diameter of any regular or irregular shaped particle to be determined as a function of the particle's orientation or as an average over all particle orientations. The technique is quite accurate in that the aerodynamic diameter of several coal dust particles have been numerically determined to be within 5% of experimentally measured values."

Natural gas was Bangladesh's only significant exploited mineral. A few other minerals or mineral-based commodities were produced for local consumption. The most valuable were nitrogen fertilizer, salt, cement, and clay for brick.2 The most important mineral industry development of 1987 was the start of modest production of crude oil, the first discovered and produced in the country. PRODUCTION AND TIADE Production of natural gas from the nation's huge reserves continued to increase but was limited by the lack of residential and industrial demand. Gas reserves of 7 trillion to 16 trillion cubic feet were sufficient for far more production than the country could efficiently utilize for many years. The country's consumption-to-reserves ratio was one of the lowest of the developing nations. Mineral exports have been insignificant, comprising a small amount of nitrogen fertilizer. Nitrogenous fertilizer exports could become important when planned new capacity comes on-stream. Mineral imports were dominated by crude petroleum.

In distributing natural and mixed gas, the industry is each year confronted with the problem of manufacturing gas in increasing amounts as the supply of natural gas becomes more nearly exhausted. The manufactured gas is now used in mixtures with the still available natural product, and will subsequently be used straight as a substitute gas. The gases that might be considered, and are producible by tried and developed processes, include water gas, carbureted water gas, and coal gas. Singularly, these gases can be used in this manner in ordinary appliances only when proportional amounts of them in the mixtures do not vary beyond rather definite limits, unless burner adjustments are made. The limits are defined by the specific gravity, content of inerts, and burning properties of the respective gases. Anticipating a future standard for city gas lower than that of natural gas during the period when considerable natural gas is available, there is justification for considering the possibility of re-forming natural gas and making a product that has substantially the same properties as other gases which can readily be generated. This report gives the results obtained during a series of tests made under a cooperative agreement by the U. S. Bureau of Mines with the Ohio Fuel Gas Co., re-forming natural gas at Toledo, Ohio, in full-scale operation in a water-gas generator having a grate area of 25.1 square feet. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The Ohio Fuel Gas Co. constructed a special water-gas generator for the tests and provided men and the necessary funds for its operation. The safe use of a refrigerant or any substance depends on knowledge of its pertinent properties and conditions of use; therefore some of the properties of refrigerants that are related to life, fire, and explosion hazards are discussed herein. These data serve as a basis for suggested control measures in the use· of refrigerants. The properties of refrigerants may be broadly classified into three main groups: (1) Those important for refrigeration, (2) those significant from the standpoint of confining the refrigerant, and (3) those that become important if the refrigerant escapes from the :machine or container. The first group of properties, such as latent heat of vaporization, specific heat of vapor, specific heat of liquid, etc., is not considered to be directly related to safety and is not discussed here. The second group, those properties important in confining the refrigerants, has particular significance because· it relates to "built-in" safety. This group is emphasized because it is believed the soundest procedure in designing equipment is to give due consideration .to both the health and safety hazards likely to be associated with the equipment. Furthermore, the toxicity, fire, and explosion hazards are controlled as long as the refrigerant is confined. Some properties of this group are (1) stability, (2) corrosiveness, (3) boiling point, (4) pressure developed in the system, (5) warning odor or irritation, and (6) ease of detection. The third group includes such properties as toxicity (of compound and decomposition products), irritating action, and explosibility.

This investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines to compare the selectivities of diverse flotation reagents and also of flotation and float-sink methods of separation. Flotation tests, using sodium chloride, an alcohol-type frothing agent, and a kerosine-pine oil mixture as reagents, were made on seven coking-coal samples representing four different beds. The results indicated equivalent selectivities relative to sulfur rejection when entrapment effects were minimized by recleaning the various products. Selectivities relative to ash rejection were also equivalent for some coals; for others, the selectivities of the reagents tended to increase in the order sodium chloride, alcohol-type frother, and kerosine-pine oil. Float-sink tests on these same coals generally gave results indicating better selectivities than those obtained in flotation tests at comparable levels of recovery.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a series of rapid wet chemical methods for the analysis of blast furnace slags. A "complete" analysis for total iron, manganese, silica, lime (calcium oxide), magnesia (magnesium oxide), sulfur, and mixed oxides (R203) can be routinely performed in less than 3 hours. These methods were employed as the analytical control procedures for the Bureau's experimental blast furnace operations and have been satisfactorily applied to the analysis of other slags and calcareous materials.

The Bureau of Mines has modified its parts-per-billion helium-4 analyzer to improve the analytical capabilities of the instrument. The modifications resulted in the following improvements: (1) The analytical precision of the instrument for 10 consecutive analyses was improved to ±1 ppb at the 5,000-ppb helium-4 level, (2) the helium-4 sensitivity was increased almost tenfold, and (3) the minimum detectable limit for helium-4 was improved to 0.5 ppb. The modifications made to improve the instrument included replacing the ion-source control circuit with a direct-current solid-state design, controlling the temperature of the ion source, stabilizing and reducing the pumping rate of the vacuum system, and optimizing peak integration.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to study the carbon deposition characteristics of a high-gravity, paraffin-base crude oil. The results of these experiments indicate that a fuel supply adequate to initiate a combustion wave can be deposited in high-gravity-oil reservoirs. These results are significant because there has been considerable doubt whether oils over 35° API gravity are able to deposit sufficient fuel. Considered in these studies were the effects of air flux, temperature, initial oil saturation, and time on carbon deposition. Conditions that maximized carbon deposition in the laboratory and an understanding of the nature of carbon formation are shown by graphical interpretation of the data. Statistical techniques were used to design and analyze the results of the retort tests. For the same amount of laboratory work, this approach yields more information about the systems that were studied than the classical method of research presently used in many laboratories. In addition, the accuracy of calculating the effect of each variable on carbon deposition is twice that of the classical approach. This paper develops the statistical approach to research without complex mathematics, thus enabling the reader to grasp the concept of how statistics can be applied to study many complicated problems.

The various underground rooms in the Bureau of Mines Oil-Shale mine, Rifle, Colo., have been open for periods ranging from 3 to 5 years. During this time 3 roof falls have occurred; 1 was induced, and the other 2 were unintentional. The three roof falls are described in this report. Two causative factors are discussed -a time-dependent deterioration of the roof rock and an unfavorable system of jointing that occurred in the strata overlying the present roof horizon. Irrespective of cause, the operating life of any stoping area would have been short com-pared with the life of the roof (1 to 4 in the most unfavorable instance), if a high-production system of mining had been employed. The report is concluded with several recommendations that should be considered in planning future mining operations.

The specific conductance of solutions of sodium hydroxide and of sodium aluminate was directly proportional to the temperature. The specific conductance of sodium aluminate solutions with identical sodium ion concentration and at constant temperature decreased with increase in aluminum concentration. The aluminate ion population in solution was shown to consist of a mixture of monovalent and polyvalent ions. Aluminate ions did not influence the temperature dependence of pH in caustic solutions containing sodium aluminate. The density and viscosity of a solution was inversely proportional to the temperature and directly proportional to the concentrations of sodium and aluminate ions.

Lower costs associated with hands-on training in donning and using a CSE ,self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR). Background In June 1987, the Mine Safety and Heath Administration (MSHA) issued an Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) requiring that all persons entering underground coal mines must be given bands-on SCSR training. The ETS will shortly be replaced by a new standard requiring this hands-on training. Bureau of Mines research has shown that the most effective means of delivering this training is to have the trainee go through a six-step training procedure while in a kneeling position. Once the miner has looped the neckstrap over his or her head, he or she completes the donning sequence in this order: 1) activate oxygen; 2) insert mouthpiece; 3) put on nose clips; 4) put on goggles; 5) adjust neck and waist straps; and 6) replace miner's cap and prepare to move out. This procedure is repeated until the miner demonstrates that he or she is proficient at the task.
