This paper describing the dredging operation of J. K. Davison & Bro. on the Allegheny River near Pittsburgh, Pa., is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of dredging sand and gravel in the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The Takilma-Waldo copper district in Josephine County, Oreg., was studied by the Bureau of Mines from September 1950 to April 1.951 and from December 1953 to April 1954. Funds for the investigation were provided by the Bureau of Mines and the California-Oregon Power Co., Medford, Oreg., on a cooperative basis. The copper mines in the district are credited with a total production of ore worth $1,700,000. Since 1933 the mines have been unproductive and, except for minor exploration, largely inactive. The history of the district indicates that the copper deposits were mined principally during periods of high metal prices.

Case 1: A driller-helper was pulling a winch cable toward a stack of drill steel when the cable contacted a 12,000-volt power line. The helper was killed, and the driller at the rig controls was severely injured. [ ] Case 2: A crew was preparing to remove a pump from a well when the hoist boom contacted a 4160-volt power line. Vehicles traveling on untreated dirt and gravel roads at open-pit mines disseminate high concentrations of dust (fig. 1). Excessive dust creates safety hazards by reducing visibility and may endanger the health of the men who breathe it. If the dust contains free silica, it can cause silicosis. In addition, maintenance costs of mechanical equipment are increased if equipment is operated in extremely dusty places. Dust on haulage roads in hot, arid country can be controlled if the surface of the road is sprinkled frequently and adequately with water. Often, when roads are sprinkled with water to control the dust, hazards are caused through reduced traction and skidding because of the mud that is formed on the surface of the road. Reducing the amount of water used will help to reduce the hazard of skidding.

APPENDIX C - HOISTING SYSTEMS - AVAILABLE EQUIPMENT C 1 - Introduction A survey has been made of available hoisting equipment which has applications for use in metal and non-metal mine emergency escape hoist systems. The information was gathered from a number of sources, including representatives in the USBM and MESA, mine operators, personal visits and telephone interviews with manufacturers, field visits to inspect equipment, advertisements, catalogues and indices of manufacturers. Wherever possible, technical specifications and prices were checked out with the manufacturer, or supplier. The sections on individual sub-systems and components, such as automatic control systems, winches and controls, are not intended to be all encompassing surveys. Rather a reasonable number of representative units in each category are discussed. The sample is large enough to provide a general picture of the kind of equipment available, including the abilities and limitations and a reasonable price range. Air quantity-pressure and methane concentration surveys were conducted by the Bureau of Mines in accessible portions of an area being pillared in a Pittsburgh coalbed mine in West Virginia. These included two mined-out and three active butt headings and a bleeder system. The particular mine workings were started in virgin coal directly from a set of main headings; the main reason for the study was the difficulty usually encountered in adequately bleeding the gobs under such conditions. Although the two separate return airways in each active butt heading and the North and 1 Left bleeders contained acceptable methane concentrations (0.01 to 0.78 percent in the butts and 0.73 to 1.0 percent in the bleeders) with significant total methane removal (109 cfm in butts and 631 cfm in bleeders), there were relatively large areas in the gobs with possible minimal airflows. This condition appears to have developed from lack of systematic regulation of the airflow across the gobs and appears to indicate the existence of considerably more methane in the probably low flow areas in the gob.

The extensive use of pulverized coal for fuel in industrial plants has brought to the front again a question that heretofore has been considered only a mining problem, namely, " Can coal dust be ignited by an electric arc ? " If it can be so imited, the next logical query is , "under what conditions can such ignition occur ? " In view of the new problems relating to pulverized coal installations , and because of occasional mine disasters attributed to ignition of coal dust by electric arcs , it seems advisable to review the work done by Thornton and Bowden with electric flashes in coal dust , and to report two preliminary investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines .

"INTRODUCTION In previous reports 5,6./ results were given showing the amount of natural ventilation that takes place in manholes (capacities, 74.1 to 308 cubic feet) when the number of ventilation openings in the manhole cover ranged from no openings to a maximum of 4g.The tests warranted the general conclusion that the ventilation or air changes taking place in, a manhole increase as the area of openings in the cover of the manhole is increased, and are proportional (with the exception of a few erratic tests) to the area of the openings in the cover. The area of the openings was the chief factor that affected ventilation.The results did not show any marked change in rate of ventilation due to increased capacity or shape of manhole, when the results were expressed in terms of air changes per day versus area of ventilation openings in square inches per 100 cubic feet of manhole space.It was observed during these investigations that in certain tests that showed erratic results (that is, did not agree with the general average for a given set of test conditions) the wind velocity during the test period was also abnormal. In view of these findings it was decided to conduct a series of tests in which the wind velocity across the openings in the manhole cover could be controlled accurately to determine the effect of wind velocity on ventilation rate."

In the period of 1942-1945, medium-grade, oxidized, lead-silver ore was mined and shipped from the Diamond district near Eureka, Nev. An encouraging tonnage of low-grade ore was developed during these operations and partly blocked-out for future mining. If the low-grade ore could be treated profitably, further development of the district would result, and production of an important strategic metal might be increased. A representative sample of Diamond district ore was obtained through the Reno office of the Mining Division for the studies described in this report. The sample consisted of lumps and fines of a highly altered siliceous rock containing much earthy red hematite and some granular black hematite. Examination with the binocular microscope showed the lead carbonate mineral, cerussite, in seams and disseminated in the hematite. No zinc or silver minerals were identified, and no sulfide minerals were present. Analyses of the ore showed:

"Flame safety lamps have been used for about one hundred years in coal mines where a dangerous accumulation of explosive mine gas (methane) might occur and thus render the use of ordinary unprotected flame lamps dangerous. Flame safety lamps are not only used for illumination, but also for detecting the presence of dangerous percentages of methane mixed in the air of the mine.The safety of the lamp depends chiefly upon the cooling qualities ofThe safety of the lamp depends chiefly upon the cooling qualities of the wire gauze used to permit free circulation of the air through the lamp. If one enters a part of the mine where methane is present in the air, the methane enters the lamp and coming in contact with the wick flame is ignited and continues to burn within the gauze without igniting the methane surrounding the lamp. If the air within the mine is traveling at a velocity of several hundred feet per minute the burning gases may be driven through the gauze by the air current. If the gauzes are properly designed and of the proper material, these burning gases will be so cooled as they pass through the gauze that they will not cause an ignition of the gas surrounding the lamp. In order to test the effectiveness of a given safety lamp, tests are made in moving explosive mixtures of gas and air arranged to simulate mine conditions.The Bureau of Mines investigated many features relative to the safety of flame lamps and in 1915 established an official schedule known as Schedule 7 whereby flame lamps having certain prescribed qualifications would be approved as permissible for use in gaseous mines."

The principle of explosive crushing depends upon the fact that an expandable substance contained within the pores of a solid body will disrupt such a body upon expansion. Such expansion may be obtained by the detonation of an explosive or by the sudden release of pressure of a superheated liquid. That this principle of disruption may be applied to minerals rests on the fact that cracks, cleavage planes, and pores exist in all mineral to an extent hardly conceived possible heretofore. Crushing by this method takes advantage of force applied from within the mineral rather than from forces applied from without. The application of a force from within would appear to be more effective. A consideration of the possibilities of such a method for crushing led to some experimental work of a preliminary nature, the results of which are embodied in this paper. No systematic program was followed in the work and the results are, therefore, not final and far from complete. The success attained so far, with the mediocre apparatus available seems to warrant a preliminary report, with the expressed hope that the work may be carried on as well-outline program covering such phases as have been impossible to investigate at this time.

The Bureau of Mines analyzed the structure of a high-grade metallurgical coke, carbonized at different temperatures in the range 500° to 1,000° C, through X-ray diffraction studies. Growth in the crystallite size with increasing coking temperature was calculated from profile analysis and compared with values obtained from the radial distribution function. The carbonization temperature appeared to have little influence upon the stack height, whereas the layer diameters more than doubled in size between 500° and 1,000° C. These results are comparable to those obtained from other studies of poorer quality cokes.

The purpose of this paper is to present to the operators, in other districts a detailed description of the ruining method used and the results obtained to exploiting one of the zinc-lead deposits of the Kansas-Oklahoma-Missouri district. No. 1. mine is located in the heart of the town of Picher in the extreme northeast corner of Oklahoma. HISTORY The first prospect drilling was done at No. 1 mine late in-1914, and shaft sinking was started early in 1915. Sufficient ore was developed to start construction of the mill in April, 1016, Production begin in August, 1916, and the mine s been producing, except for short periods, to the present time. The property was originally a 40-acre tract, but additional properties have been consolidated with the original one until the mine now covers 200 acres.

For the past few years the Applied Physics Branch has been investigating, experimentally, the generation and propagation of strain waves in rock. The strain waves are produced by the detonation of a high-velocity explosive placed in a small cavity in the rock. Strain gages mounted in the solid rock surrounding the cavity record the strain pulses propagated away from the source. Numerous strain-wave pulses have been recorded in different rock types for charges of various sizes and at various distances from the charge. Analysis of these records has shown, among other things, that there is associated with the strain wave a characteristic pulse width. This pulse width is dependent on the rock type and the distance from the shot point to the gage, but is apparently independent of the charge size or cavity size. Recent published literature on the generation and propagation of seismic waves indicates that the characteristic frequency of an elastic wave generated by an explosion should be a function of the rock type and the size of the cavity created by the explosion. Also, internal friction in the rock would produce absorption of high-frequency components, which would cause continual change in the shape of the pulse propagated. As the experimental data did not verify the expected change in pulse shape with cavity size, a theoretical investigation of the vibrations associated with a spherical cavity in an elastic medium was undertaken.

Addition of an acid waste to an alkaline cyanide waste was investigated for five different combinations of electroplating wastes. At the optimum final pH values of the mixtures, metals and cyanides were almost quantita¬tively precipitated. No evolution of hydrogen cyanide was detected by a few additional processing steps, significant amounts of variable metals were recovered for recycling the waste-plus-Waste step is attractive because no reagents are required, metals arc concentrated, and a relatively harmless effluent that meets most water quality Standards for cyanide content is produced.

This report deals with the investigation of a continuous process for producing pure zirconium. It covers the construction, operation, and maintenance of the semicontinuous reactor. The report covers a study of test variables, such as reactor temperature and reluctant charge weights, and evaluates the results, such as billet metal hardness, residual billet salt content, and suitability of a purified billet as a consumable electrode for arc melting. The purpose of this project was to develop an inexpensive and continuous process for producing pure zirconium. The process developed, termed the semicontinuous reactor process, produced billets of compacted zirconium sponge. The metal was produced by reducing zirconium tetrachloride with sodium and magnesium beneath molten byproduct salt. Hydraulic rams at each end of a vertical reaction tube compacted the sponge and ejected it as a billet. These billets were purified by heat under vacuum to remove entrapped salt. The goal was to utilize the purified billet directly as a consumable electrode for arc melting.

The Helium Research Center, Helium Activity, Bureau of Mines, is presently engaged in a critical examination of all of the PVT data on helium that appear in the literature. The long-range objective is the development of a single equation of state for helium that will allow all of the thermodynamic properties to be calculated and will reproduce all of the data within the accuracy with which the data are known. A preliminary objective is to obtain the best values of the second virial coefficients and to develop an equation that will reproduce the best values as a function of temperature. The method of treatment consists in expressing the PV product of a gas, for a given isotherm, in terms of a power series in either the pressure or the density and evaluating the constants by least squares solution. Associated with these functions whose coefficients have been evaluated by least squares, the following errors, or deviations, are of interest; the standard error of a single measurement; the standard error in each coefficient; and the standard error of the resulting function.

The Sheep Creek iron deposits, Meagher County, Mont., were investigated by the Bureau of Mines in 1943 and 1944. Work undertaken included exploratory trenching, churn drilling, petrographic studies, and detailed beneficiation tests. It was determined that the Sheep Creek ores occur both as fissure filling and bedding replacements in thin-bedded shale and arenaceous limestones of the Algonkian Belt series. At least five stratigraphic horizons were found to be mineralized. Metallurgical studies indicate that the ores are not amenable to beneficiation by present-day low-cost methods. Details of geology, sampling, and beneficiation tests are presented in this report.

Homogeneous zirconium-alloy ingots have been cast on a production basis by the consumable-electrode arc-melting process at the Northwest Electrodevelopment Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, Albany, Oreg. This paper describes the various methods used to introduce alloying materials into the ingot and evaluates 1 each method by the degree of homogeneity of resulting ingots, as determined in tests on sections cut from the ingots. As many as 30 or more ingots, each 6 to 10 inches in diameter and weighing 300 to 500 pounds, were melted, using each method; and, as most of them subsequently were fabricated to strip 0.1 inch thick, the test results are considered to be representative of production practice. Ingot homogeneity has been considered more difficult to achieve in arc-melting practice than by methods where the molten metal is poured into molds and the addition can be stirred into the total mass of metal before casting. Owing to the unique requirements of consumable-electrode arc melting the addition can be made only to that part of the total mass of the ingot that is molten at one time. Observation of the flowlines in 500-pound ingots produced at Albany indicates that the molten pool has a maximum depth about equal to the ingot diameter. The weight of metal molten at one time is, therefore, not over 100 pounds. Characteristically, the arc-melting process is conducive to segregation, which can be overcome, at least partly, by adding the alloy constituents almost continuously during casting.
