This report describes a rapid, reliable, and relatively simple method developed by the Bureau of Mines Pyrometallurgy Laboratory at Bruceton, Pa., for determining lime (calcium oxide) and magnesia (magnesium oxide) in various materials containing these constituents in greater than trace amounts. Optionally, titania (titanium dioxide) may be determined for the same sample. The accuracy of the method, suitable for most purposes, is shown by comparing the Bureau results with those obtained by accepted procedures. The method has been applied satisfactorily to the routine analysis of blast-furnace slags, for which purpose it was primarily developed, and to other calcareous compositions. In the Pyrometallurgy Laboratory it has replaced the standard methods previously used to determine lime and magnesia, and has been in general use by that laboratory for the past several years. The analysis time, generally under 3 hours, is considerably less than required by standard methods.

This study was prepared in response to the need for a series of data that reflect the basic flow pattern of energy resources in the United States. To effectively measure and analyze energy,2 it is necessary to prepare balances that reflect both production and consumption, and the various forms energy resources take at different stages of utilization. Before energy can be measured it must also be put into a common unit. In this study the common unit us d is the British Thermal Unit (Btu). The ideal point to survey energy is at the stage of final ultimate use, representing the useful work derived from the interaction of energy inputs and the prime mover. Unfortunately this concept of efficient or useful work from energy output cannot readily be measured in the aggregate. With the present available official data, energy measurement can be carried to the point of calculation of net inputs of energy3 into the economy at various stages of utilization. However, preparation of energy balances, on a net basis is hampered by the fact that this can only be done for years when the censuses of Mineral Industries and Manufactures are taken, usually at 5-year intervals.

"INTRODUCTION Silica and kaolin (a layer aluminosilicate) are among the major constituents of most coal mine dusts.' Whereas kaolin is cytotoxic in vitro but nonfibrogenic in vivo in humans and experimental animals,2-4 the cytotoxic and fibrogenic potential of silica is rather well established.5 Wallace and co-workers 6-8 have studied the cytotoxic potentials of both native and surface-modified silica and kaolin and inferred that retoxification is slow in the case of occluded silica vis-à-vis native silica. Recent epide¬miological studies indicate that silica concentration alone in a mine dust, as determined by transmission IR spec¬troscopy (TIRS), does not correlate well with the pro¬gression of coal workers' pneumoconiosis. 9 This obser¬vation has led to the suggestions that silica particles occluded by clays such as kaolin may not be fibrogenic. This proposal requires accurate estimations of kaolin, silica, and occluded silica. The current method of silica analysis in a mine dust sample employs TIRS of the 797- cm -1 band of silica, although its accuracy, as well as that of x-ray diffraction studies, is no better than 25 % , even in a laboratory-generated dust.° In this paper we have employed the techniques of diffuse reflectance spectros¬copy (DRS) and photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS), in conjunction with an FT-IR spectrometer, for the quan¬titative determination of silica in laboratory-generated silica-kaolin mixtures.One of the main advantages of DRS and PAS is that, in these techniques, problems arising from sample prep¬aration of the KBr-based disks used in TIRS are avoided. There are, however, several other considerations (e.g., particle size effects and saturation phenomenon) which complicate the use of DRS and PAS for quantitative work. 10-25 In this paper, we have carried out a systematic comparison of the quantitative abilities of the two tech¬niques, as applied to the silica-kaolin mixtures, with par¬ticular attention to the saturation behavior of several bands with different absorption coefficients. In particular, we show that a weaker band for silica at 1875 cm-1 is suitable for quantitative purposes, and that quantitative accuracy is higher in DRS than in PAS. Ten years ago there was no general , country-wide service for the systematic training of miners in matters relating to safety . A beginning only had been made at a few scattered points . Under the old conditions each man was left largely to look out for himself in meeting the hazards of his day's work, and the foreman , shift bosses , and superintendents chiefly relied upon improvision when major accidents occurred . So long as the mines were small and the workers highly intelligent and well trained in routine mining methods , and when too , the pressure for output had not yet speeded up industry to the extent it has since those days , there was something to be said for this lais- sez faire attitude . When , however , the rapid expansion of industry lead to the introduction of new and little trained labor and to units of production of greatly increased size , the natural dangers of mining were greatly intensified . An accident in a small mine affects only a few; the same accident in a large mine , unless proper precautions have been taken , may cost the lives of many . The public does not generally recognize that the greatly increased outputs of the mines , of coal mines in particular , have been in recent years , obtained from substantially the same number of miners as ten years ago but with a personnel not nearly so well trained in mining . It is inevitable under : such conditions that more care must be devoted to avoiding accidents and much more elaborate preparations made for meeting them . In the years immediately preceding the establishment of the Bureau of Mines this speeding up of industry , change in the character of mine labor , and increasing hazard had all begun to be felt . Immediately prior to the organization of the Bureau of Mines , public attention had been drawn to a series of disastrous coal-mine explosions , to the increasing frequency of these disasters , and to the terrible loss of human life . resulting therefrom. One of the first problems , therefore ; confronting the Bureau was clearly that of finding methods of reducing the number of such disasters and lessening the severity of those that continued to occur . Toward this object were immediately directed the energies not only of the Bureau of Mines but also those of State mine inspectors , mine operators and various other agencies , all of whom were urged to cooperate in this great humanitarian work. The results of this work naturally cannot be measured by figures only . Work for increasing the health , safety , comfort , and happiness of human beings may not be gaged with mathematical precision . But certain features of this work as revealed by the record from year to year are of much interest . ”

The effect of uranium on the transformation kinetics and the hardenability of a low- alloy steel was evaluated . Isothermal transformation curves were developed from metallographic studies , and hardenability was determined by standard Jominy end- quench tests . For the steels investigated , the addition of 0.15 weight- percent uranium was found to produce a significant shift in the isothermal transformation curve and caused a related increase in hardenability . These effects diminished rapidly when the uranium content was increased above 0.2 weight - percent .

"INTRODUCTION Adoption of rubber-tire shuttle cars underground in conjunction with mobile coal-loading machines has introduced new problems in the control of dust on mine roadways. Where this type of loading and transportation is used, development and extraction are generally rapid, with the result that much coal is spilled from the shuttle cars during normal operation, Coal in the roadways from this source and from sloughing of the ribs is ground to fine dust by the wheels of the 'shuttle cars and by the treads of the loading and mining machines. The coal dust usually is somewhat contaminated by pulverized rock, and the mixture could not be loaded with the run-of-mine coal without undue contamination of the product even if it were cleaned up promptly.The presence of large quantities of fine, loose dust, which is constantly stirred up and kept in suspension in air by the traffic, constitutes a grave explosion hazard, reduces visibility along the roadways, and is physiologically harmful to the workmen who breathe the air. From the operating standpoint the loose material is undesirable along the roadways because it provides poor traction for the trucks and thereby increases wear and power consumption. The dust-explosion hazard could be eliminated or reduced by frequent application of sufficient rock dust on the roadbed; but this would not remedy the other difficulties, and in fact it might intensify them. Where practicable, the most direct and effective safety measure is to clean up and remove promptly all dust that forms and settles on the roadways. Unfortunately, in many cases this procedure is not feasible. A third Suggested remedy is to prevent dispersal of the dust into the air and to promote its consolidation on the floor by wetting the dust particles.During the past few years several mines have used calcium chloride on shuttle-car roadways to allay the dust thereon. When exposed to the' humid atmosphere of the mine this salt absorbs Moisture from the air and deliquesces, and in this way wets the dust on the floor of the roadway. In a survey conducted in coal mines in southern West Virginia and in eastern Kentucky where calcium chloride has been in use, somewhat conflicting re- ports were received regarding the merits of the application, and several operators have abandoned the practice either because of actual or assumed disadvantages. The purpose of the study described in this report was to collect and correlate evidence and, on the basis of experimental data obtained in the field and in laboratory tests, to present a clearer picture of the factors involved in the allaying of dust by use of salts."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has compiled data on the major causes of fatal and nonfatal electrical accidents related to mining, and their associated costs, for the 1980-85 period. Specific electrical problem areas were identified, allowing future research to be focused on reducing the frequency of these occurrences. Recommendations for reducing the number of electrical accidents and injuries are provided. The four mining sectors for which data were gathered and compiled are (1) underground coal mines, (2) surface at underground coal mines, (3) underground metal-nonmetal mines, and (4) surface at underground metal-nonmetal mines. Nine categories of information pertaining to specific aspects of the accident are used in this report: activity engaged in when the accident occurred, source of injury, job title, mining method, location, machine, nature of injury, accident type, and part of body affected. The number of years of experience at the specific job the employee was performing when the accident occurred, time of accident, and in the case of nonfatal accidents, the total days lost per year, are also summarized.

The objective of this Bureau of Mines publication Is to present a nomograph that provides a fast, convenient method for estimating hydrocarbon lease bonus bids for offshore acreage in the Gulf of Mexico. Discounted cash flow analyses were computed from a model derived to show the costs necessary to explore, acquire, develop, produce, and abandon a 5,000-acre block of offshore acreage, and the estimated income from the sale of the hydrocarbons produced from the block. The range of the variables in the financial analyses used to construct the nomograph are prices of oil, $2.50 to $5.00; recoverable hydrocarbon reserves, 44,651,476 to 127,575,645 barrels; and discounted cash flow (DCF) rates of return, 5.0 to 57.2 percent. A total of 1,234 sets of DCF data were used to construct the nomograph. The range of bonus bids shown on the nomograph is from 2 to 90 million dollars ($400 to $18,000 per acre).

Occupational noise caused by the rock drills used in mining was investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Using a large reverberation chamber and an automated drill test fixture (ADTF), the sound power levels of mining drills were measured to determine if there are types of drills that are advantageous from a noise production standpoint. Test results show that while there are not large variations among types of drills, there are still some choices that could produce a positive effect on overall noise exposure. It is also shown that lower noise exposures are possible using larger drills because of higher production rates and better operator positioning.

Since 1922 when the Bureau of Mines issued a report2 covering the slate industry in detail, changes in technology have taken place which have an important bearing on the industry. The present paper comprises a record of these changes. Though the value of slate, for roofing, structural, blackboard, sanitary, and electrical uses is generally recognized, it has many competitors. To meet this constantly increasing competition producers are promoting economies in manufacture, and improving processes, thereby lessening costs of production, and are placing on the market products of the highest possible quality, thus creating satisfaction and confidence on the part of the user. This endeavor to place the industry on a better basis, both as regards processes and products, is shown in the recent developments in technology which are presented herein. The Ladd manganese deposits are in San Joaquin County, Calif., about 13 miles southwest of Tracy. The deposits are confined in two main areas of development, roughly about 1,700 feet apart horizontally, and known as the Ladd mine and Fabian mine, respectively. The deposits occur as interbedded lenses in the white cherts of the Franciscan formation. The ore minerals are bementite, rhodochrosite and psilomelane. As a part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits, a development program was started. August 24, 1940, and completed on June 24, 1941. The Federal Geological Survey cooperated by mapping the geology and logging the drill cores. The program included road building, trenching, rehabilitating the mine workings, trenching underground excavation, sampling, and core drilling. The following pages mention the location, give a brief history, and note the physical features of +1-.1, district. Mine workings are sketched, the deposit is described and the plan of the project is noted. The work performed by the Bureau of Mines is explained in the concluding pages with a summary of the drill hole logs.

This paper describing the mining practices at the Argonaut mine, Amador County, California, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The mining practices described are those used in exploiting the low-grade gold ores in the heavy and swelling ground that occurs on the Mother Lode belt. The author acknowledges the assistance of E. For a number of years, the Bureau of Mines conducted tests on various types of structures to determine the effect of seismic vibrations emanating from quarry blasting in an effort to determine an index of damage . Associated with these tests , occasional records were made of the characteristics of. the air blast or concussion from the explosions . Although the importance of the air - blast problem was recognized , the equipment was not designed for air -blast measurements , nor was the early research program concerned with the problem . After the ground - vibration tests had been completed , attention was turned to study of the air blast and its effect . The air - blast problem in reference to quarry and mine blasting may be divided conveniently into three phases : (1 ) Determination of the fundamental characteristics of the air blast , such as the pressure - time relationship , speed of propagation, attenuation , and the like ; ( 2) effect of blasting conditions on these air -blast characteristics ; and ( 3) determination of the conditions necessary for damage to structures . The initial step was the development of microphones suitable for recording the anticipated blast pressures. Such microphones were designed and built during 1940 , and described in technical detail for publication ( 2)3/. Briefly, the microphone adopted was a small, plate - diaphragm condenser type . The recording was through special transducer amplifiers with low -frequency response to zero cycles per second and a Duddell - type oscillograph of special design .

Literature was searched and cases of alleged water well damage were investigated. Occurrence of ground water in Appalachia is primarily in low yield, fractured, water table aquifers. Four test sites were chosen based on geographic and geologic diversity. Test wells were drilled at each site and base line data on water quality, static water level, and drawdown characteristics were obtained before surface mining commenced. Blast induced ground vibrations were measured at the surface by the wells at levels up to 5.44 inches per second maximum resultant particle velocity. Measurements made at the bottom wells indicated that vibrations were considerably attenuated at depths of 140 to 160 feet. No direct evidence of change in water quality or well performance was produced by blast vibrations, but removal of downslope support by excavation does cause lateral stress relief which permits the water-bearing fractures to become more open. This additional storage capacity causes the static water level to drop and for well-bore permeability to improve. Static water level recovers if sufficient recharge is available and well performance is improved.

In the search for possible future sources of petroleum products, the recovery and utilization of bitumens from the large outcropping deposits of bituminous sandstones in the United States have been under study by the Bureau of Mines for the past several years. The results of laboratory research in the adaptation of the hot-water separation process to recovery of bitumen from bituminous sandstones were reported in an earlier publication, on the Edna deposits near San Luis Obispo, Calif. This publication included analytical data on the cracked products and asphalts obtained from the extracted bitumen and on the cracking and distillation of the bitumen. Comparable hot-water separation tests have been run in the San Francisco, Calif., laboratory of the Bureau of Mines on quarry samples from the large deposits of bituminous sandstones near Vernal and Sunnyside, Utah. The bitumens were isolated from the extracts of the separation plant and analyzed at the Petroleum and Oil-Shale Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Laramie, Wyo. Part I of this report summarizes the general characteristics of the Vernal and Sunnyside deposits and discusses the hot-water separation process as applied to those bituminous sandstones and the results obtained. The separation tests showed that these bituminous sandstones also respond to treatment by the hotwater method of separation. The bitumen in the Vernal sandstone was extracted more readily by the action of hot water than was the Edna bitumen, which greatly simplified plant operation. The Vernal sandstone contains no water-soluble iron compounds, such as were found in the Edna sandstone, and, therefore, required no preliminary water washing. Recovery of bitumen from the Vernal sandstone was about 96 percent.

Automation of coal mining activities at the face offers improvements in worker safety, health, and productivity. Introduction of integrated computer-sensor systems to current mining machines will enable these machines to perform some of the most hazardous tasks through supervised teleoperation. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is pursuing the development of the enabling technology necessary to achieve this goal. The research program consists of both basic and applied research, each focused on the fundamental issues of computer and sensor technologies. Short-term research is directed to providing computer-assisted, remote supervisory operation of present underground equipment; the long-term goal is the development of progressively more intelligent mining systems. The research program includes a review of robotic machine and autonomous vehicle technologies and of current mining technology, which provides a base for developing innovative mining methods; research in navigation and guidance technology, emphasizing control of a continuous mining machine; research on coal-rock interface sensing technology for horizon control, and rib thickness control in highwall mining; the development of computer systems and hierarchical architectures for real-time control; and development of expert systems for machine system fault diagnostics and predictive maintenance. This report presents a brief background and the current status for each of these research areas.

This paper, which describes the milling practice at the Midvale concentrator, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The Midvale concentrator, a custom lead-zinc selective flotation plant, is in Salt Lake County, Utah, on a flat site several hundred yards east of the Jordan River and about 200 yards south of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad tracks leading to Bingham Canyon. The site is at an elevation of about 50 feet above the river, the highest available location, thus allowing maximum storage of tailings.

"INTRODUCTION Canister-type gas masks have become an essential part of the equipment of many industries, not only for use in emergencies, but also in performing normal operations of industrial processes and procedures, particularly where ventilation is not practically or economically feasible. They are also used widely for enhancing safety of operations which previous to the development of gas masks had been performed in harmful atmospheres.Since the inception of industrial gas masks the Bureau of Mines has been actively engaged in endeavoring to increase the efficiency and safety of these devices, and this bureau has become a source of advice to manufacturers in producing devices of good quality and to industry in the proper selection and use of these devices. In order to give first-hand information and keep current with the demands and needs of industry it is necessary to perform investi-gations from time to time. This report deals with tests of certain types of commercial gas-mask canisters for protection against mercury vapor.TYPES OF CANISTERS EXAMINEDThis investigation included tests of the following types of canisters:(a) Gas-mask canister filled with 725 c.c. of granular activated charcoal, 8 to 14 mesh, and of a quality used in gas masks which meet the Bureau of Mines approval requirements 4 for protection against organic vapors."

Frequencies of haulage-related accidents in metal and nonmetal surface mines for the years 1988 through 1990 were investigated and compared with those of non-haulage-related accidents. This study was part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines program to improve mining haulage safety. Data were obtained through the U.S. Bureau of Mines Accident Data Analysis (ADA) program. The chi-square test was used to compare frequencies of haulage-related and non-haulage-related accidents for each of the following variables: degree of injury, age, total number of years of mining experience, and shift time. Significance was determined for degree of injury between haulage-related and non-haulage-related accidents. Age of injured did not vary significantly between haulage-related and non-haulage-related accidents, but total number of years of mining experience was found to be significant. Shift time for the accident proved to vary significantly between haulage-and non-haulage-related accidents. Events causing injury for haulage-related accidents were tabulated, and the most frequent determinants of haulage-related accidents were identified. Accident descriptions for both fatalities and permanent disabilities were studied, and the primary causes of these accidents were identified. These findings suggest that haulage-related jobs are among the most dangerous when considering accidents experienced by all workers in the metal and nonmetal surface mining work force.
