Shales from 14 locations in Indiana were sampled , tested , and evaluated to determine feasibility of producing lightweight aggregates by rotary - kiln and sintering methods . Sampling procedures and the geology of the significant shale units are discussed . Preliminary testing was conducted in a muffle furnace , and continuous tests were made in a 16 - inch by 14 - foot rotary kiln . The aggregate weighed 37.0 to 47.2 pounds per cubic foot . Concrete cubes employing the aggregate were tested to determine the qualities of the concrete . Compressive strength of the concrete using seven bags of cement per cubic yard , after autoclave curing for 6 hours , ranged from 3,600 to 5,850 pounds per square inch . Four samples made suitable lightweight aggregate in the laboratory rotary kiln . Four samples tested by sintering methods made unsatisfactory aggregate .

Three of the five primary aluminum producers in the Pacific Northwest have facilities in the region to make aluminum mill products. Only one of the three, however, produces a variety of shapes and forms. The principal reason for the lag in development of an aluminum mill products industry was found to be transportation cost. The long range outlook is for expansion, based mainly on growth of the western market for aluminum used in construction, containers and packaging, electrical applications, diesel trucks, mobile homes, and irregation pipe. Consumption of western aluminum mill products in 1985 is projected at 1.1 million tons, compared with estimated consumption of 250,000 tons in 1961.

The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is practicable in a reactor where the exothermic heat of reaction is removed by circulating large quantities of recycle gas through a catalyst bed of high-voids content. At an hourly space velocity of 1100, the feed gas, a mixture of 1.5 parts hydrogen to 1 of carbon monoxide, was converted 90 percent, producing hydrocarbons predominantly in the gasoline range. At these conditions a recycle-to-fresh gas ratio of 40:1 was enough to give excellent temperature control with a pressure drop of 1.5 p.s.i. per foot of bed using a steel catalyst in the form of lathe turnings. Steel parallel plates, although offering lower resistance to gasflow, were less reactive and less durable. INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a research and development program since 1944 on the synthesis of gasoline from coal. Gasification of coal with steam and oxygen to yield a synthesis gas--a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen--is being investigated at Morgantown, W. Va.; and the synthesis of gasoline by catalytically reacting the carbon monoxide and hydrogen over iron by the Fischer-Tropsch reaction is being investigated at Bruceton, Pa.

As a portion of a general program for the synthesis of hard materials, a method was sought by which the hardness and density of tungsten carbide (WC)-cobalt compacts could be increased. It was demonstrated by Cotter that these improvements in quality could be made by employing an electric-resistance sintering process in which heat and pressure are applied simultaneously to presintered compacts composed of powdered tungsten carbide and cobalt. This conclusion was based on tests of material prepared by Cotter on welding equipment in use at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md., and at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N. Y. Rockwell-hardness tests made at Norris and core-drilling tests made at the Mount Weather Station of the Bureau of Mines indicated that, for some purposes, carbide material made by this process might be superior to the chemically analogous commercial products prepared by ordinary sintering methods. A program to develop optimum conditions for the electric-resistance sintering of tungsten carbide-cobalt compacts was initiated. The program was followed by a systematic evaluation of the hardness and density of compacts prepared by this method along with a series of carbide compacts furnished by various manufacturers. This paper presents a description of the electric-resistance sintering of tungsten carbide-cobalt compacts and the results of comparative physical tests.

Batch and continuous - circuit flotation , leaching , precipitation , and electrodeposition studies were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine optimum conditions for treatment of complex mercury - antimony sulfide and mercury- arsenic sulfide ores and concentrates . On the Red Devil ore sample over 95 percent of both the mercury and antimony sulfides were recovered in a flotation concentrate containing 35.6 percent mercury and 21.0 percent antimony . By selective flotation a mercury concentrate containing 71.0 percent mercury and 2.9 percent antimony was obtained with a mercury recovery of 90.4 percent . Leaching results show that , with 150 grams per liter of sodium sulfide and 50 grams per liter of sodium hydroxide , 95 to 99 percent of the mercury , antimony , and arsenic sulfides could be extracted from the concentrates treated . Sodium hydroxide reagent consumption was based on the sulfides generated in the dissolution of the sulfide minerals and on the method of metal recovery used . Selective leaching of the antimony and arsenic sulfides with potassium sulfide dissolved more than 95 percent of either of these two sulfides and 0.5 to 5 percent of the mercury sulfide present . Methods for recovering mercury and antimony from solution were electrodeposition of mercury followed by electrodeposition of antimony , aluminum precipitation of both mercury and antimony , or antimony precipitation of mercury followed by antimony electrodeposition . Diesel particulate matter (DPM) often contains small amounts of metal as a minor component but this metal may contribute to adverse health effects. Knowledge of the mechanism for particle formation as well as the size preference of the trace metals is critical to understanding the potential for health concerns. To achieve this, the size and the composition of each particle should be optimally measured at the same time. Single particle mass spectrometer (SPMS) would be the best tool for this objective. In this paper, we therefore will introduce new findings about the mechanism and distribution of the trace metals in DPM, derived from a study where an SPMS was used to analyze freshly emitted DPM. "The Stiner zinc prospect near the north boundary of Union Tennessee, and the Bunch Hollow property 5 miles northeast in Claiborne County, Tennessee, were diamond-drilled by the Bureau of Mines during the period .September 1, 1944, to February 22, 1945. Seventeen holes totaling 5,687 feet were completed, 13 of which, totaling, 5.083 feet, were on the Stiner property and the remainder, totaling 604 feet, at Bunch Hollow.The Stiner prospect is about 1 mile east of the old workings known as ""New Prospect"" or ""Lead Mine Bend."" The Federal Geological Survey made a study' of the area early in 1944. The prospect was first visited in August 1944 by Bureau of' Mines engineers3/ accompanied by members of the Federal Geological Survey.4/ The locality is reached by traveling State Road 33 north-about 9 miles from Maynardsville, Tenn., thence northwest about 7 miles by an improved county road that leads to the mine (fig. 1). The tract comprises an area of about 181 acres held by G. S. Stiner of Sharps Chapel, Tenn.; it is now under option to the Universal-Exploration Co. of Jefferson City, Tenn.The Bunch Hollow property, about 5 miles northeast of the Stiller prospect, was also studied by the Federal Geological Survey previous to being;Visited by Bureau of Mines engineers in August 1944. It is reached by traveling north from Maynardsville, Tenn., on State Road 33 about 13 miles, thence northwest by county road 6 miles to the property (fig. 1). The last 3 miles of the county road are in poor repair but are passable during the entire year. The property comprises an area of approximately 300 acres and is held by the imperial Mining Co., Pressman's Home, Tenn.Few reliable data are available as to the history of the Stiner prospects themselves. However, the New Prospect mine, 1 mile west, has had a colorful past, This mine was opened in 1883 and was worked intermittently until 1918, by which time more than 65,000 tons of concentrates had been shipped. No further work was done until 1942, when the mine pillars were robbed and 1,900 tons of ore averaging 25 percent zinc was shipped to the New Jersey Zinc Co., Austinville, Va."

This paper, describing mining and milling methods and costs at the Gold Hill mine, is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines. Boise Basin, in which the geld Hill mine is located, is in the central part of Boise County, Idaho, about 30 miles by air line northeast of Boise. The mine, owned and operated by Talache Mines, Inc., is at the southern end of the town of Quartzburg. About 115 to 125 tons daily is mind by square-setting and is treated in an amalgamation plant.

On November 20, 1968, a massive explosion rocked the underground workings of Mountaineer Coal Co.?s Farmington No. 9 Mine in West Virginia. Of the 99 miners who were working in the mine at the time of the explosion, only 21 survived and escaped the mine. This group included eight who were rescued from the Mahan?s Run air shaft. Nearly 40 years after the event, researchers from the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory conducted oral history interviews with two of the eight survivors rescued from the shaft. The Farmington No. 9 Mine disaster ultimately led to passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (amended in 1977).

Depletion of iron ore in the Nation's large deposits has directed attention to other sources. One of these is the titaniferous iron ore of the Iron Mountain, Wyo., area. Tests were made to determine the feasibility of smelting this ore, which contains about 20 percent titanium dioxide (Ti02), in an electric-arc furnace to produce pig iron. Initial tests, which were made in a 30-pound-capacity induction furnace, demonstrated that the iron could be easily reduced to metal and that limestone was a suitable and effective flux. Larger scale tests then were made in a 50-pound-capacity electric-arc furnace to obtain the more detailed information necessary for the planned continuous operation of a still larger arc furnace. The principal facts determined by preliminary batch-smelting studies were that (1) 9 pounds of limestone flux was required for each 100 pounds of ore smelted, (2) expensive coke was not required because coal proved to be a satisfactory reductant (near stoichiometric carbon was optimum), and (3) overreduction, which produced a viscous slag, must be avoided.

A simple, portable helium analyzer was developed primarily for field use. Its utility lies in making preliminary surveys before exact analyses are required. The analyzer is based upon chromatographic principles; that is, separation of gas mixtures resulting from variable retention times of the components with respect to a separation medium (column-packing material). It uses thermistors for sensing detectors, a dry battery as source of power, and a micro-ammeter for indicating helium concentration. The absolute accuracy of the instrument depends upon the recency and care with which the instrument is calibrated with a standard gas. The unknown gas should be analyzed immediately after calibration, and another calibration should be made before another unknown sample is analyzed. The instrument is simple to operate, requiring approximately 15 minutes, after calibration, to determine the helium content of a natural gas sample. Although developed primarily for helium determination, the analyzer possibly can be used for other analyses that can be performed at ambient temperatures.

Enclosed cabs are a primary means of reducing equipment operators? silica dust exposure at surface mines. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health recently performed a laboratory study to evaluate which factors on an enclosed-cab filtration system are most significant. The various factors evaluated were intake filter efficiency, intake air leakage, intake filter loading, wind infiltration, use of a recirculation filter, and the use of an intake pressurization fan. The result of this laboratory testing has shown that the two most important factors for an effective filtration system on an enclosed cab were the efficiency of the intake filter and the use of a recirculation filter. A higher-efficiency intake filter considerably increased the quality of the intake air that was delivered into the enclosed cab. It also was determined that air leakage around the intake filter notice-ably reduced its air cleaning effectiveness. The second key factor is the use of a recirculation filter, which was shown to improve the air quality in the enclosed cab by six to 12.7 times more than the intake filter alone. The reason for the significant improvement was that the cab air was constantly drawn through the recirculation filter, thus continually filtering the dust out of the air.

Horizontal and vertical air classification systems were tested individually and in simulated tandem use for the recovery of ferrous and nonferrous metals and of other noncombustible and combustible products from shredded urban refuse. The horizontal air system with a larger tonnage throughput was used to obtain preliminary separations, and a smaller capacity vertical system was used as a cleaning device. Air elutriation, magnetic separation, and screening of shredded minus 6-inch municipal refuse recovered 92 percent of the metal in a relatively clean iron product contaminated only by adhering coatings or entrapped materials, recovered 97 percent of the combustibles in a 97-percent combustible product, and rejected 88 percent of the nonmetal noncombustibles. Cleaning of the preliminary combustible fraction produced a 98-percent paper product while rejecting other combustibles (plastics, rubber, textiles, etc.) into a 94-percent combustible product. Retreatment of the preliminary noncombustible fraction produced a relatively clean glass product.

The citrate process for sulfur dioxide emission control was developed in pursuit of the Bureau of Mines goal of minimizing the adverse environmental impact of mineral-processing operations. This publication describes the gas analysis procedures used during development of the process. The research required the capability to analyze SO2, H2S, CO, CO2, COS, volatile hydrocarbons, NO, NO2, O2, N2, and H2. The methods described include gas chromatography, electrochemical detection, infrared spectroscopy, and the use of a computer program to predict the product composition in complex reactions. Laboratory and pilot plant applications are discussed.
