The study of "bottom-hole' samples follow,-is in natural sequence the study of samples3 obtained under high pressures at the well heads of flowing wells. The principal object of this phase of gas-solubility research, started actively in January, 1530, was to gain a more accurate knowledge of the physical and chemical characteristics of the oil-gas mixtures that exist in natural reservoirs. In possession of actual data regarding the condition of the oil; the quantity of gas liberated from solution upon dimunition of pressure; and the relative volumetric proportions of gas to oil at various pressures throughout the flow string in a well, it should be possible to predict, with a fair degree of accuracy, what physical changes these mixtures would undergo throughout the life of a pool. Such information not only is important in designing flow strings in flowing wells but is important also in solving problems relating to pumping efficiency and the power required for pumping. Although certain fundamental rata Mere obtained in the stud of samples taken at the well head, "bottom-hole" samples are more representative of subsurface mixtures of oil and gas because they are obtained at reservoir temperatures, and before the oil has had the opportunity of intermingling with extraneous gas; that is, gas which either was not in solution originally, or which was liberated from solution at some higher pressure, and later became mired with the original undissolved gas.

"IntroductionOn May 27, 1927, a coal-dust explosion occurred at the Palagua No. 5 mine of the Victor American Fuel Company, Delagua, Colorado, resulting in the loss of even lives and in and in considerable damage to the main slope and to several overcasts the explosion did not extend into the mine working where 125 additional men were employed but escaped uninjured. It is believed that the saving of these 125 men and the evidence of large property loss were due in a large measure to coal-dusting and of other sanity measures taken by the coal company management. A number of features connected with the explosion and mine safety practice seem worth the attention of the mining public and grateful acknowledgment is made to the Victor American Fuel Company for its aid in assembling the data herein contained."

Several thin film absorber stacks with spectrally selective characteristics were developed by the Bureau of Mines. The stacks consisted of a silicon thick film or a zirconium compound thin film on a reflective thin film of silver. The zirconium absorber films, with the general formula ZrCxOyNz, were prepared by reactively sputtering zirconium or zirconium carbide in argon with small amounts of oxygen, nitrogen, or both, or by oxidizing zirconium films in air. A few similar types of films were prepared from titanium. The short-wave absorptance over the solar spectrum, a(s), and thermal emittance at 600 K, e(600 K), of the solar absorber stacks were calculated from room-temperature reflectance data. The values of a(s) ranged from 0.47 to 0.93, e(600 K) from 0.49 to 0.034, and the ratio a(s)/e(600 K) from 1.7 to 34. The specimen with the best combination of properties, a ZrNx-Ag stack, had a solar absorptance a(s) of 0.85 and a ratio, a(s)/e(600 K), of 24. The effect of film thickness and composition on spectral selectivity was determined. An emissometer for measuring normal total emittance up to 800 K and a method for determining a (s), e(T) (hemispherical), and a(s)/e(T) using simulated solar radiation are described. A calorimetric method for measuring a(s) and e(T) (hemispherical) at elevated temperature is also described. Measurements made on several specimens agreed favorably with calculated values.

"INTRODUCTION The purpose of this circular is to describe the sealing off of a mine fire and subsequent use of carbon dioxide gas to extinguish it.A fire of electrical origin occurred in the Valier mine of the Valier Coal Co., Valier, Franklin County, I11., on March 29, 1949, at about 1:35 p.m. It was discovered about 3:35 p.m. in 5 south west intake airway inby 1 and 2 west panels. The No. 5 southwest airway had caved, and the fire was in the top coal beneath a large fall of rock. All men, except officials, were ordered from the mine. The mine officials decided to seal the fire, and four temporary seals were erected, which isolated approximately 200 feet of 5 south west entry. The seals were completed on March 30 at 2:45 a.m., but on March 31, at 3;40 a.m,, two of them were blown out by an explosion of gas that was produced by the fire. The two seals were rebuilt, the work being completed on March 31 at 12:00 noon, but they were blown out by another gas explosion at 12:10 a.m. on April 1. It was then decided to extinguish the fire with water if possible.To accomplish this, concrete-block dams were constructed. On April 1, about 4:25 a.m., when the dams were about half completed, water was introduced into the fire area through a 2-inch pipe.On April 4, J. G, Crawford, general manager of the Valier Coal Co., notified James Westfield, chief of the Vincennes (Ind.) Branch, U. S. Bureau of Mines, by telephone of the fire in Valier mine and requested assistance to combat it. Westfield, accompanied by F. J. Smith and H. C. Brumbaugh, Federal coal-mine inspectors, went underground and inspected the seals and dams. Later, during a conference with company officials, it was decided that the concrete-block dams were not strong enough to withstand the hydrostatic pressure that would be produced by flooding the fire area. It was then decided to use carbon dioxide gas to extinguish the fire. Four seals were completed, and 5 tons of carbon dioxide gas was introduced into the fire area, which extinguished the fire."

The following is a description of the methods employed at the Eureka-Asteroid mine, which is situated on the Gogebic range, at Ramsey, Mich. The mime is operated by the Castile Mining Co. under the direction of Oglebay Norton & Co. This paper has been prepared in accordance with an outline furbished by the United States Bureau of Mines, and in one of a series, on mining methods and costs covering the principal minim operations throughout the United States. The objective of the investigation was to determine spectrochemically 19 elements in the general range of 0.5 to 1,000 ppm in high - purity hafnium and its compounds . Samples were converted thermally to hafnium dioxide , mixed with buffer - carrier - internal standards , and excited by a dc arc . Spectra were recorded on photographic plates . Transmittance values were recorded densitometrically and converted to relative - intensity ratios . Four groups of standards were used to establish analytical curves from which the concentrations of impurities were obtained . Average precision of the method was 14.2 percent relative standard deviation , and relative error was 4.2 percent .

The solubility of carbon in electrorefined vanadium was determined to be approximately 0.27 wt pct at the eutectic temperature 1,650° C and 0.03 wt pct at 700° C. The tensile strength and hardness of vanadium increased with car-bon content to the solubility limit, but this effect was small, probably because of the narrow solubility range. Between the solubility limit and 0.3 weight-percent carbon, the second phase had essentially no strengthening effect in vanadium. The second phase, observed metallographically at the grain boundaries and within the grains, was shown by autoradiography to contain high-carbon concentrations. This second phase was identified as VgC by X-ray analysis. The VgC in the grain boundaries contributed largely to the poor cold-and-hot workability of vanadium-carbon alloys. Increased concentrations of V2C occurred at the grain boundaries of the high-carbon alloy ingots as a result of homogenization at 1,600° C for 1 hour. Alloy ingots containing more than 0.36 wt pet carbon (a calculated 2.9 wt pct VaC) following homogenization, cracked severely and failed by intergranular fracture upon swaging at 900° C.

"The problems of sampling particulate materials, and of characterizing the distributions of particle size and composition are reviewed. Requirements for sampling from comminution systems are discussed and a simple formula is presented for estimating the minimum sample size needed. The limitations and errors associated with the techniques available for particle size analysis are evaluated and guidelines are suggested for the selection of appropriate methods. The use of microscopic and macroscopic approaches to the characterization of particle composition are discussed.INTRODUCTIONComminution is a process of particle size reduction in which the goal is to produce a material with a specified particle size distribution from a coarser feed. In mineral processing applications, the product size distribution is often qf secondary importance to the extent to which individual mineral grams can be liberated from one another. However, due to poor understanding of the nature of the liberation process and the lack of reliable procedures for characterizing it, the actual specification is normally in terms of particle size.Particle size distribution can be regarded as the fundamental characteristic of a particulate system. The distributions of particle shape and composition among the various particle sizes present are often sufficient to define the bulk properties and behavior of the system. Description of the distributions of size; shape and composition of the different phases which may exist within individual particles is necessary to complete the picture and is especially important for predicting liberation etc., in comminution processes. It is quite obvious that · the complete characterization of real particulate systems is a formidable, if not .impossible task. Practical characterization procedures should involve ·evaluation of those characteristics which are deemed to be important and which can be measured. In comminution systems, this should ideally include the particle size distribution, the size-by-size distributions of particle composition, and as much information as can be acquired on the internal composition and structure of individual particles. In most cases, of course, we fall far short of even this rather limited goal."

The major fire and fire injury findings for all metal/nonmetal mining categories for 1990-2001 are shown in tables 64-65. Table 66, partly illustrated in figure 22, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, fire fatalities, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays for all metal/nonmetal mining categories by time period. For all metal/nonmetal operations (including stone and sand and gravel), a total of 518 fires occurred during 1990-2001; 296 of those fires caused 308 injuries and 4 fatalities (Ewhr = 4,012 x 106 hr, In = 0.015, LWD = 36,204). Thirty fires and 26 injuries involved contractors. The greatest number of fires and fire injuries occurred at surface operations; the highest risk rate values were also calculated for surface operations. The number of fires increased during the first four 2-year time periods (1990-1991, 1992-1993, 1994-1995, and 1996-1997), then decreased during the last two periods (1998-1999 and 2000-2001). The number of injuries showed a decrease throughout the periods, accompanied by an increase in employees' working hours. Twenty-five firefighting interventions by mine rescue teams in underground mines and at least 30 interventions at surface operations were required to combat these fires. However, 45 fires destroyed or heavily damaged facilities and equipment (including 19 pieces of mobile equipment) because of failure of firefighting methods, late fire detection, undetected fires, or fire size. Ninety-seven fires were detected late, and 30 fires were undetected. The ignition sources that caused the greatest number of fires were flame cutting/welding spark/slag/flame (169 fires or 33% with 137 injuries), hydraulic fluid/fuel sprayed onto equipment hot surfaces (89 fires or 17% with 46 injuries and 3 fatalities), heat source/explosion and flammable liquids/ gas/refueling fuel on hot surfaces (98 fires or 19% with 73 injuries), electrical short/arcing (51 fires or 10% with 16 injuries), and spontaneous combustion/hot material (46 fires or 9% with 17 injuries). The flame cutting/welding spark/slag/flame source caused fires usually involving welders' clothing or oxyfuel/grease and other materials (including chute and dust collector liners, flammable liquids, belt material, crusher, hopper and shaker deck materials, washer plants, equipment mechanical components, stampler breaker, hydraulic fluid, rubber tires and hoses, gear boxes, bin feeder, dump rope cables, screen liner and screen panel, kiln and shaft material, pipelines, liquor pumps, wood pallets, electrical junction boxes, handrails, grease, refuse, shop and wood). The spontaneous combustion/hot material and electrical fires were usually detected late due to lack of combustion gas/smoke detection systems. Laboratory-scale studies on defluorination of natural and synthetic fluorspars by pyrohydrolysis at 1,500° C. were made to determine the feasibility of developing a process for producing hydrogen fluoride from siliceous fluorspars. It was found that the reaction (at 1,500° C.) is not promising for process development, even though a silica-free offgas can be generated. The primary difficulty is the low hydrogen fluoride content of the offgases; an HF content of 6 percent was the best achieved. Previous research by the Bureau of Mines has demonstrated that offgases averaging 27 percent hydrogen fluoride can be produced under carefully controlled conditions at 1,280° C. The lower temperature process is a better method for production of HF. However, charges in which the CaF to Si02 mole ratio varied from 0.4 to 2 could be processed with similar results. Also, combined alumina and ferric oxide contents up to 25 mole-percent did not noticeably alter the rate of defluorination. Therefore, virtually any natural siliceous fluorspar would respond in essentially the same manner when exposed to water vapor at 1,500° C.

"Using. ESR spin trapping methodology, evidence was obtained that fresh quartz dust in a cell-free aqueous medium generated hydroxyl - and possibly superoxide radicals. The hydroxyl radical generation potential decreases on storing of fresh quartz dust in ambient air and on the addition of either catalase, superoxide dismutase, desferoxamine, or DMSO. The role of quartz related radicals in the biochemical mechanism of acute silicosis is suggested from these findings.IntroductionThis report summarizes our electron spin resonance (ESR) detection of oxygenated radical formation by freshly crushed quartz particles in a cell-free aqueous medium, and its inihibition by radical scavengers. This study was undertaken with to elucidate the primary biochemical mechanism involved in the development of silicosis (Farber, 1983; Reiser and Last, 1979; Silicosis and Silicate Disease Committee, 1988). In particular the mechanism by which the quartz particles exert their toxic action on cells and the process(es) by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still not well understood (Farber. 1983; Reiser and Last, 1979;). It is generally believed that the action of quartz particles on the cell membrane is the starting point of the silicotic process (Farber, 1983; Parazzi et al., 1968). Thus the surface characteristics of the quartz particles have been the subject of several recent studies (Bolls et al.. 1983; Dalai et al., 1986; Fubini et al., 1987). Recently, We reported that mechanical crushing of quartz under normal atmosphere generates free radicals which decay with time, and that these free radicals are associated with a higher cytotoxicity of fresh quartz dust as compared to aged dust from the same stock (Dalai et al., 1986; Vallyathan et al.. 1988). The formation of Si• and. SiO--type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions has also been reported by Fubini et al. (1987). In addition, Gulumian and van Wyk (1987) have reported that quartz particles react with hydrogen peroxide (H202) to generates hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and suggested that this process might contribute to quartz's pathogenicity. However, these authors did not report the effects of metal chelators, so it was not clear as to whether the detected -OH radicals simply resulted from the Fenton reaction involving exogenous metal ion contaminants. Earlier, Marasas and Harington (1960) reported that quartz particles could function as an oxidant in a number of in vitro oxidations, including the hydroxylation of proline and lysine. They postulated that silica dusts, on reacting with water, could release H2O2 which might have the potential to react with various biological constituents and thus cause tissue damage. In fact, Gabor and coworkers (Gabor and Anca, 1974; Gabor et al., 1975) suggested that the cytotoxicity of quartz particles might be associated with the generation of some 'factor or factors possessing the properties of a free radicals capable of promoting the peroxidative chain cleavage of polyunsaturated fatty acid moieties of the phospholipids in the cell membrane. More recently Weitzman and Graceffa (1984) reported that asbestos is able to catalyze the generation of • OH radicals from H2O2. Their later work indicated that lipid peroxidation may be one of the mechanism by which asbestos produces tissue injury (Weitzman and Weitberg, 1985). This is significant because • OH radicals are capable of causing peroxidation by abstracting hydrogen atoms from cell-membrane lipids and initiating lipid peroxidation in lysosomal membrane (Fong et al., 1973). In fact, the formation of oxygenated species in reactions involving quartz was suspected since Kolbanev et al. (1980) reported the detection of H2O2 in the reaction of fresh quartz particle with aqueous medium. The present work was thus undertaken to detect the anticipated formation of some oxygenated, radical species by reactions of quartz in a cell-free media and its inhibition by radical"

Although the technology involved in removing material from below the earth's surface has a long history, communication systems in underground workings are relatively new to the industry. Communication equipment did not begin appearing in underground mines until the early 1900's. Figure 1-1 shows a miner using a Western Electric standard telephone set for underground mines in 1913. These early phones were essentially the same as those used aboveground, except that they were enclosed in cast-iron boxes as protection against moisture, acid fumes, and gases.

Methane emission from two surface gob-degasification boreholes was measured by the Bureau of Mines. The investigation took place during mining of a 3,200-foot longwall panel in the Lower Kittanning coalbed in central Pennsylvania. The first hole was 500 feet from the start of mining, and the second hole was 2,200 feet. The first hole went on natural draft as soon as the longwall face passed it. This caused the methane flow in the return entries to drop 75 pct. In the 6 months required to complete the panel, the two holes emitted 69 MMcf of methane in varying percentages of concentration in air. In 3 years, the holes emitted a total of 150 MMcf of methane.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a field test program in the Pittsburgh coal seam to investigate the effect of water sprays in the suppression of respirable dust being formed while cutting with a continuous-mining machine. Emphasis was given to the location of spray nozzles on the top and bottom of the cutting boom. Results showed that (1) sumping caused about 60 percent of the dust escaping the face area, and shearing and loading caused the other 40 percent; (2) during sumping, top and bottom sprays were equally effective in dust suppression and reduced dust ~13 percent; (3) during shearing and loading, bottom sprays reduced dust 61 percent and were about 50 percent more effective than top sprays; (4) the combination of top and bottom sprays was slightly more effective than the separate systems, but water consumption increased 60 percent; and (5) inclusion of throat sprays decreased dust reduction by removing some of the water from top and bottom sprays where it was more effective.

Support of the immediate roof in coal mines is essential for their safe operation, and timbers are the most common means of support. Their effectiveness depends upon their resistance to decay. The theory has been advanced by some mine operators that rock dust, which is applied to ccal-mine workings to prevent propagation of explosions, accelerates the decay of mine timbers. As the results of part 1 of this study were inconclusive, the study was continued. Its principal objectives are: 1. To determine the effect of rock dusting upon decay of mine timber. 2. To compare the extent of decay of timbers in two mines in which underground conditions are similar. 3. To determine the loss in strength of the timbers after exposure to mine atmosphere. The studies were carried on in the Crucible mine of the Crucible Fuel Co. where the first part of this study was made, and in the Isabella mine of the Weirton Coal Co. The mines are on the Monongehela River and are adjacent.

The Bureau of Mines investigated technologies for testing the integrity of in situ leach mining wells, as required by environmental regulations. To test for leaks, inflatable packers were used to seal the well casing. Laboratory testing determined that the packers could contain a casing pressure up to 50 to 60 psi (345 to 414 kPa) less than the packer inflation pressure. Single-and double-packer configurations were successfully field-tested in 32 wells ranging from 500 to 530 ft (153 to 162 m) in depth. A rigid pipeline and a hoist truck were used to run the packers in and out of the wells for the double-packer tests, which averaged 2-1/4 h each. In an effort to decrease the time of the rigid-pipe double-packer test. a self-contained trailer-mounted test system was designed and built. It utilizes a winch and steel cable to run the packers in and out of the well and high-pressure nylon tubing for packer inflation. This system was successfully field-tested in eight wells averaging 650 ft (198 m) in depth and resulted in a time savings of 13 pct and an operator-hour reduction of 42 pct.
