An evaluation is made of a lime-soda sinter process for extracting alumina from clay. In this process, alumina is extracted by sintering clay with soda ash and limestone and then leaching the sinter with a dilute sodium carbonate solution. The sodium aluminate solution formed during leaching is separated from the residue and treated with lime in autoclaves to remove dissolved silica before alumina trihydrate is precipitated with carbon dioxide. The tri-hydrate is then calcined to a-alumina. Two options, dry grinding and wet grinding, are used in the sintering step. The fixed capital costs for plants producing 1,000 tons of alumina per day are $72 million for the dry grinding option and $66 million for the wet grinding option on a Marshall and Stevens chemical equipment index basis of 240.0. Specific geographic locations of plant and raw material sources are not assigned, but, since this process requires large quantities of both lime-stone and clay, the plant site is considered as variable with relation to the clay mine and limestone quarry. A nomograph is given to find operating costs at various delivered costs of clay and limestone. If the plant is located nearer the limestone quarry so that the delivered cost of clay is $2 per ton and the delivered cost of limestone is $1 per ton, the operating costs are $76.47 and $71.61 per ton of alumina for the dry grinding and wet grinding options, respectively. On the other hand, if the plant is located nearer the clay mine so that the delivered cost of clay is $1 per ton and the delivered cost of limestone is $2 per ton, the operating costs are $80.15 for dry grinding and $75.34 for wet grinding.

"This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations ni the Unietd States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperating agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CRF) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC)3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed.4/The present report presents analytical data for 1,381 samples, representing the products of approximately 75 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were secured during July and the first half of August, 1945. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples – regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 733 samples, 229 items, and 57 brands; premium-price, 504 samples, 197 items, and 56 brands; third-grade, 84 samples, 28 items and 12 brands. The number of completed petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline in 1938, but the total capacity to process crude oil increased materially. This information was obtained in connection with the Bureau's annual canvass of refinery capacity as of January 1, 1939. In spite of the addition of a half dozen plants in Illinois and the inclusion in this year's list of several more "pot-stills" in Montana, the total number of plants, and inactive, declined from 551 on January 1, 1938, to 538 on January 1, 1939. was entirely in shut-down plants, as the number of operating plants rose from both active The decline 431 to 435. Yost of the plants dismantled were situated in Wyoming and Texas, parts or several from the latter being transported to Illinois. About 10 more East Texas refineries were dismantled in 1938, leaving about 15 plants in the field, only 8 of which were operating on January 1, 1939. Although the total completed capacity increased from 4,351,151 barrels on January l, 1938, to 4,508,555 barrels on January l, 1939, the operating capacity declined, and the inactive capacity increased about 50 percent, or from 380,955 to 574,770 barrels. These shifts in capacities reflect the comparative slump in the refining industry in 1938 after the prosperous year 1937. Daily average crude runs in 1938 were 3,192,000 barrels, from which it may be figured that the operating ratio for the active units was about 81 percent of crude and for all completed equipment 74 percent. The highest daily throughput in 1938 was about 3,400,000 barrels, at which time the reserve capacity represented in the active equipment was at least 500,000 barrels, in addition to about that much capacity shutdown. In an emergency, much more reliance could be placed on the reserve capacity of the active equipment, as much of the shut-down capacity is obsolete at present specifications and prices. Regarding obsolescence, the refiners reported 418,165 barrels of their idle capacity in good condition on January l, 1939 and 156,605 barrels in poor condition. However, it is probable that the former reflects an optimistic viewpoint. Refinery activity, as represented by new construction and dismantling, declined materially in 1938. The new capacity added in 1938 was 378,350 barrels compared with 394,680 barrels in 1937. Probably 1939 will see a much larger decline, as the new capacity under construction on January 1, 1939, totaled only 142,250 barrels compared with 283,020 barrels the preceding year. "INTRODUCTION The Philipsburg Mining District, Granite County, Mont., has been the largest producing area for battery-grade manganese (70 percent MnO2) in the United States since the First World War. Two companies, the Trout Mining Division of the American. Machine & Meals Co., and the Moorlight Mining Co., have intermittently mined and milled 120 to 250 tons of 25-percent manganese ore per day for the production of concentrates of this grade.Investigation of the district by engineers of the Federal Geological Survey and Bureau of Mines indicated that further exploration and develop¬ment would make available additional oxide and carbonate manganese ores for milling and production of metallurgical-grade manganese. If the battery-grade producers converted their plants to the production of metallurgical-grade concentrates, their production also could be increased through greater recoveries.Until February 1, 1944, the Metals Reserve Company, through its agent, the Sunshine Mining Co., purchased milling-grade manganese oxide and carbonate are for stock-piling at Philipsburg. After that time, only carbonate ore was purchased. Based upon the assumption that the stock pile was a true cross-section sample of the producing area, metallurgical studies were made on representative samples from the Metals Reserve stock piles. Testing also was conducted on two other samples of Philipsburg oxide manganese ore obtained by engineers of the Bureau of Mines from the Little Dandy claim of the Donlan group and from the Marie mine. All ore samples tested were found to be amenable to concentration by ore-dressing methods for the production of concentrates that when sintered met Metals Reserve Company specifications for metallurgical-grade manganese."

Magnesia (MgO) has a variety of uses, and it has become increasingly important as a war material because of the imperative demand for refractories to line metallurgical furnaces, and because magnesia is used to make the in aircraft and other implements of warfare. Magnesia occurs as an integral part of nearly 60 minerals, but it is extracted commercially from only a .smaller number, of them. The present commercial sources are magnesite, brucite, dolomite, raw sea water, sea water bitterns, and well brines. Magnesia Raw Materials Magnesite magnesium, carbonate MgCO3, theoretically contains 47.8 percent MgO and 52.2 percent CO2. There are two varieties of magnesite, crystalline and cryptocrystalline (dense or amorphous). The latter type, though, not so plentiful as the former, is generally purer. It resembles unglazed write pottery in texture, whereas the crystalline variety is generally dark and granular, though the color may vary. The principal domestic deposits, of crystalline magnesite are near Chewelah, Stevens County, Wash. (which has supplied most of the magnesite mined in the United States), in the Gabbs Valley area of Nevada (near Luning); and in Llano County, Tex. Crypto-crystalline magnesite occurs principally in California. Magnesite occurrences have also been reported in several other States, including New Mexico, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maryland, but these deposits have not been developed commercially.

"The MSHA prescribed method for the determination of quartz in airborne respirable-dust samples from underground coal mines is the P-7 method, a combination of /ow-temperature, radio-frequency ashing (LTA) and infra7 red analysis (IR). There is no prescribed procedure for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rock. Dispersive infrared (IR), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods are most commonly used for the analysis of quartz in powders. Several aspects of the experimental procedures, such as the preparation of the analysis sample from bulk samples, ashing techniques, scanning procedures, peak measurement location, calibration techniques, sample amounts, size consist and data interpretation, affect the results from each of the methods differently. Significant differences in analytical results obtained from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR) on the same samples are reported. All studies point to the need for reliable quartz analysis methods.In a recent research program, a procedure for preparing bulk-coal and host-rock samples for quantitative quartz analysis was developed. Further, the results from X-ray diffractometry and infrared spectroscopy for quartz content on identical samples were compared. Calibrations with pure and mixed standards were used to assess the influence of particle-size distribution, matrix and calibration on the analytical results. In this paper, several issues concerning the measurement of quartz in the samples of coal, host-rock and airborne respirable dust from mines are outlined and quantified. IntroductionThe literature on coal-mine airborne-dust control has identified a need for a better understanding of the sources, mechanisms and amounts of quartz in mine airborne respirable dust (Althouse, 1984; Jankowski, Nesbit and Kissel, 1985; Ramani 1988; Qin, 1988; Bhaskar and Xu, 1990; Bhaskar and Li, 1992; Ramani, Qin and Miola, 1991 ). To understand the quartz content in the source materials, bulk samples of coal and host rock must be analyzed. Establishing an analysis procedure for determining the quartz content in bulk-coal and host-rock samples is necessary for identifying the sources of quartz in mines; for establishing the relationships between the quartz contained in the source and in the airborne dust; and for controlling the content of quartz in the mined product and in the airborne respirable dust."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the in situ vertical component of the rock stress in the rib of the haulage drift on the 6100-level of the Star mine, Burke, Idaho, using the flatjack and borehole deformation methods. The estimate of the vertical component of stress about 2 feet into the rib at a station along the haulage drift on the 6100-level of the Star mine by the flatjack method is approximately 5,875 psi, whereas the borehole deformation procedure at this station yielded a value of 5,500 psi for the same depth into the rib. The test zone is approximately 5,625 feet below the surface.No attempt was made to extrapolate stress estimates beyond the depth of the flatjack installation.

The Bureau of Mines investigated processes for recovering a marketable lithium product from the montmorillonite-type clays of the McDermitt caldera. The clay deposit, located on the Nevada-Oregon border, is estimated to contain over 3 million short tons of lithium. Limestone-gypsum roasting and selective chlorination proved most successful for extracting lithium from the clays; 80-pct Li recovery was achieved using either technique. With both processes, lithium silicate in the clay was converted to a water-soluble compound-either lithium sulfate or lithium chloride. The lithium was then recovered as a carbonate by water leaching the calcine, concentrating the leach solution by evaporation, and precipitating the lithium with soda ash. The operating costs for the limestone-gypsum roast process were estimated at $2.02/lb Li2C03; selective chlorination operating costs were estimated at $3.85/1b Li2C03. The current selling price of Li2C03 is about $1.50/lb. A detailed flowsheet, material balance, and process evaluation are presented for the limestone-gypsum roast process. In addition, lithium reserves and resources are discussed and the McDermitt clays are described.

According to the Bureau of Mines annual survey, there were 318 petroleum refineries in the United States with a total daily crude throughput capacity of 8,632,390 barrels as of January 1, 1956. Compared with the previous year the total number of refineries declined 8 while the crude throughput capacity increased 211,760 barrels daily. Three refinery districts accounted for 90 percent of the crude-oil capacity increase, the California district 34 percent; the Texas Gulf Coast district, 31 percent; and the Indiana-Illinois-Kentucky district, 25 percent. Decreases in capacity during the year were reported for the East Coast, Appalachian #1, and the Arkansas-Louisiana Inland districts. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased during 1955 from 25.830 barrels daily to 27,145.

A centrifugal float-and-sink test procedure has been developed by the Bureau of Mines to reduce the time for the gravimetric separation of coals finer than l4-mesh from as long as 24 hours to less than 1 hour. Comparative tests indicated that centrifuging a minus 14-mesh Pittsburgh-bed coal for 20 minutes at 1,500 revolutions per minute produced results that compared favorably with static float-and-sink test results. Standard deviations of the mean recovery and ash content of the float obtained centrifugally ranged from 1.31 and 0.04 percent, respectively, at 1.30 specific gravity to 0.21 and 0.05 percent, respectively, at 1.60 specific gravity. As in static separations, retreatment of the products separated at low specific gravities was required.

The isothermal recrystallization of electrorefined vanadium has been studied as a function of annealing time , temperature , and prior deformation . Specimens were cold- rolled from 30- to 75 - percent reduction in thickness , then annealed from 700 ° to 1,200 ° C at time periods ranging from 1 minute to 96 hours . The course of recrystallization was followed by means of hardness , metallographic , and X- ray techniques , and a recrystallization diagram was constructed . Interpretation of the data indicated that there was around 50- percent softening due to recovery ( first stage of softening) before recrystallization began . The defining of recrystallization limits with respect to the amount of deformation was precisely established for electrorefined vanadium . More than 30- percent reduction was necessary for recrystallization to occur at 850 ° C. With 60- percent reduction , it was initiated at 750 ° C and completed at 950° C. The activation energy for recrystallization , as derived from the data , was 95,300 cal per mole for 60 - percent reduction and annealing at 750 ° to 900 ° C. Recrystallization by the mechanism of nucleation and growth was the principal process during the second stage of softening . minor part of the second stage of softening took place as strain- induced boundary migration , which was observed in specimens reduced 30 percent , bent in L- shape , and annealed at 950 ° C. Grain size decreased significantly only with the largest reductions and annealing between 750 ° and 950 ° C. Grain growth was expressed by the empirical relation D = KKtt"" ,, the exponent being the same at 60- percent reduction and annealing from 750 ° to 900 ° C. Accordingly , the activation energy for grain growth was 75,000 cal per mole .

A part of the Bureau of Mines mission is to help improve the Nation's mineral posture by providing the technology for utilizing low-grade ores. In this regard, laboratory testing by the Bureau of Mines has shown that the removal of insoluble slimes using selective flocculation and flotation is a viable method for treating low-grade potash ores that have a high content of water-insoluble impurities. Results indicated that over 82 percent of the insoluble slimes could be removed from sylvinite ore containing 5 percent water insolubles and 13 percent K20 by using nonionic or cationic polyacrylamide flocculants and cationic, anionic, and/or nonionic collectors. Subsequent potash flotation recovered 87 percent of the potash in rougher concentrates containing 57 percent K2O. Sizing and cleaner flotation of the rougher concentrates upgraded the products to 60 percent K2O. Filtration of the water-leached insoluble-slimes flotation concentrates on a bed consisting of leached insoluble-slimes concentrate mixed with potash flotation tailings recovered 80 percent of the brine. Filtration rates using the mixed bed were nine times faster than filtration rates obtained when the insoluble-slimes flotation concentrates were filtered separately.

The National Safety Competition conducted by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, is held each year for the purpose of promoting safety in the mineral industries of the United States. Since the program was inaugurated in 1925, twenty-three safety competitions have been held. This publication is a report of the results of the contests held in 1944, 1945, 1946, and 1947. The names of plants that have been awarded "Sentinels of Safety" trophies and Certificates of Achievement in Safety dur- ing these years, together with a summary of their achievements in injury prevention, are listed. Statistical data covering the injury experience of all plants entered in the annual contests also are included in this publi- cation. The injury statistics of these plants, arranged in the six groups of the competition, are the only data on injury severity at mineral operations available to the Bureau of Mines. Interest in the National Safety Competition has increased steadily. The number of participating plants has increased from 210 in 1925, the first year of the competition, to the record number of 494 in 1946. The widening scope of the competition means that a steadily increasing number of the mines and quarries in the United States are participating in a program that will supplement their other activities in promoting safety. Safety competitions have long been recognized as instrumental in stimulating and holding the interest of employees and officials in accident-prevention work. During the years covered by this report, conditions in the mineral industries of the United States were hardly conducive to setting records in accident prevention. During the war years, handicaps were especially severe- loss of skilled employees to the armed forces or to higher-wage war industries, greater production by a smaller force of workers, relatively high rates of labor turn-over, the longer workday in effect through 1944 and 1945, and difficulties in obtaining repairs and replacement for badly worn machinery. Even the immediate postwar period has brought no abatement of the tremendous pressure upon the mineral industries for greater production. Although there was a decrease of 18 in 1947 from the record enrollment in 1946, these oper- ations worked 160,525,025 man-hours, the greatest number of man-hours of exposure to mining hazards in any year of the contest except 1942. Despite the accelerated pace at which the mineral industry worked during the 4 years covered by this report, participants in the National Safety Competition have achieved creditable performances in the promotion of safety. In fact, the injury-severity rate in the enrolled plants in the 1947 contest was 7.315 days for each thousand man-hours worked, the lowest by far in the history of the National Safety Competition. The injury-frequency rate of 42.155 for each million man-hours of exposure to mine hazards in 1947 marks a favorable trend downward from the rate of 50.577 in 1946, which was the

Sodium-aluminum and calcium-aluminum silicates are important rock-forming minerals. While many of them are of only theoretical interest, several are of practical importance--as ceramic raw materials and as potential future sources of aluminum. Heretofore, thermodynamic data for these minerals were incomplete; and in many instances missing data were difficult to estimate reliably. This has seriously hampered thermodynamic calculations pertaining both to the natural formations of these minerals and to their decomposition in sintering and fluxing reactions. This paper reports the results of the Federal Bureau of Mines measurements of low-temperature heat capacities of four crystalline silicate minerals--dehydrated analcite (NaAlSi2O6), hexagonal anorthite (CaA12 Si208), lawsonite (Ca2Al2Si2080?2H20), and leonhardite (Ca2Al4Si8C24?7H2O). It augments previous similar measurements of related minerals, which were summarized recently.4 The measured heat-capacity data were used to derive entropy values for the four minerals at 298.15° K. Some relations between these entropy values and those of other similar minerals were discussed. These relations illustrate the difficulty of estimating entropy values of tertiary (or higher) silicates.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide over Raney nickel catalyst and nitrided fused-iron catalyst using both a single-pass and a recycle system. Activation energy over Raney nickel catalyst is 29 to 32 kcal/mole for synthesis from either CO or CO2, Pressure dependence of the gas conversion is to the 0.3 power for synthesis from CO and to the 0.5 power for synthesis from CO2. Nitrided fused-iron catalysts were tested using high recycle rates and 3H2+lCO, 2H2+lCO, and 1H2+lCO feed gas at 21.4 atmospheres absolute pressure. The relative usage of hydrogen (moles H2 consumed per moles Ha+CO consumed) was larger than in corresponding single-pass tests, and the relative usage of hydrogen approached the feed gas ratio monotonically as conversion increased. Activation energy was found to be 12 or 13 kcal/mole fresh feed gases of 3H2+lCO or 2H2+lCO. For single-pass operation the activation energy under the same conditions was 19 to 21 kcal/mole.

Thorium and yttrium oxides were recovered from siliceous ores of the Powderhorn , Colo . , area . Processing comprised ( 1 ) acid curing and subsequent ( 2 ) acid baking , ( 3 ) leaching , and ( 4) solvent extraction of thorium , using a primary alkylamine , and yttrium , using di - 2 - ethylhexyl phosphoric acid . About 95 pct of the contained thorium and yttrium was recovered from ore containing 1.2 pct Th02 and 0.5 pct Y₂ 03. The thoria product was 99 pct Tho ; the yttria product was 77 pct Y₂ 03. A 150 - to - 1 concentration ratio was effected on the latter , but some contaminating lanthanon - group oxides remained .

The Bureau of Mines, S. Department of the Interior) at, its Morgantown., W. Va., station, operating under a cooperative agreement with West Virginia University, is conducting research and development work on the problem of producing synthesis gas from coal. An important part of this work is the study of the gas purification necessary to meet the rigorous standards required to render the gas suitable for use in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of liquid fuels. One of the most detrimental impurities is sulfur in all forms, the maximum amount that can be tolerated being one-tenth of a grain per hundred cubic feet. Concentrations as low as this require the use of precise analytical methods to evaluate the performance of processes used for removing sulfur. At the same time the analytical methods should be rapid in order to reveal the failure of purification before damage to the expensive synthesis catalyst results. Although sulfur in unpurified gas is generally present as hydrogen sulfide and as organic sulfur compounds, the latter may be converted to hydrogen sulfide for analytical purposes. Thus a suitable method for the determination of traces of hydrogen sulfide may also be used for the determination of organic sulfur.

In this the available information friction factors and leakage report, on characteristics are reviewed and summarized. The use of Penn State Mine Ventilation Simulator (Volumes II and III of the Final Report) to analyze the sensitivity of the ventilation system to the changes in leakage and friction factors is discussed with examples. In simple ventilation systems, the results of changes in leakage and friction factors can be easily solved and explained by the laws of air-flow. In complex systems, with fixed quantity branches and multiple sections, the effect of changes in leakage and friction factors cannot be generalized. This study points out the importance of good input data for obtaining reliable information from computer analyses and demonstrates the application of simulators to analyze the effectiveness of ventilation systems. An extensive bibliography on friction factors, leakage characteristics and ventilation economics is included.

Chromium resources in the United States are estimated at 1.8 million tons of recoverable chromium contained in 22.5 million tons of chromite-bearing material. Additional resource is presumed existent in large, but as yet undetermined, quantities of material containing less than 10 percent Cr203. No domestic resources are being mined presently (1969). Excluding transportation charges to domestic consuming areas, the total 1.8 million tons of chromim is estimated to be available, in ore or concentrate, at costs up to $0.64 per pound; 63 percent of the total is available under $0.11 per pound; and 38 percent under $0.08 per pound. It is judged that transportation from the resource areas to the existing market centers would add nearly $0.05 to the cost of a pound of chromium contained in ore or concentrate. Technically effective beneficiation methods have been developed for much of the known domestic resource, and further development might reduce costs of processing these materials. However, at present, domestic chromium resources are noncompetitive with foreign sources.

"Electron spin resonance (ESRJ and cytotoxicity measurements were made on newly fractured silica to examine specifically the role of the fracture-induced, silicon-based radicals (Si· and SiO·) and silica-generated hydroxyl (·OH) radicals in the mechanism of the cell membrane damage by silica. The concentration of the Si· and SiO · radicals was controlled through decay processes, thermal annealing, and boiling, while that of the ·OH radicals was varied by using catalase, superoxide dismutase, KMnO, Na;iSeO:y ascorbic acid, and metal ions, and monitored via ESR spectroscopy. The dust's cytotoxicity potential was evaluated by measuring the silica-induced hemolysis and also by determining lipid peroxidation (using linoleic acid). From the comparison of hemolysis and ESR results it is deduced that the radicals play little or no role in the silica-induced hemolysis. However, the lipid peroxidation data indicate that the radicals might be involved in the initiation of an oxidative chain reaction leading to the macrophage membrane damage through lipid peroxidation. INTRODUCTIONThe biochemical mechanism of quartz-related pneumoconiosis is still not fully understood. It is believed, nevertheless, that one event of primary importance is the perturbation of cell membranes by the dust particles (Allison et al., 1966; Allison and Harrow, 1971; Bateman et al., 1982; Parazzi et al., 1968; Reiser and Last, 1979; Shi et al., 1989; Summerton et al., 1977). The ensuing cell: membrane damage unleashes certain lytic enzymes resulting in additional cell injury and eventual fibrosis (Nolan et al., 1981; Summerton et al., 1977). Thus considerable effort is currently being made toward the understanding of the processes by which quartz particles disrupt the membrane of a red blood cell (RBC) or a pulmonary alveolar macrophage (PAM). A simple but important method of evaluating the membrane damage potential of a dust is the hemolysis test (Harington et al., 1971). Even though this test is used routinely for screening dusts for their cytotoxicity potential, the biochemical mechanisms underlying the cell lysis by many dusts, including quartz, is still controversial (Kilroe-Smith, 1974; Singh and Rahman, 1987), and this provided us the impetus for the present undertaking."
