"Two in vitro systems are being developed to model initial stages in the interaction of respired dusts with the acinar region of the lung. Incubation of quartz and kaolin with dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine, a major component of pulmonary surfactant, suppresses the prompt C)1otoxicity of both dusts as measured by in vitro enzyme release from pulmonary macrophages or assay by erythrocyte hemolysis. Additional data is presented to quantitate the detoxification of quartz and kaolin by dipalmitoyl lecithin. Subsequent incubation of lecithin treated dusts with phospholipase enzymes results in partial to complete restoration of the assayed cytotoxic potentials, dependent on the lipase activity applied, the incubation time, and the mineral. Restored cytotoxic potential is due to removal of the prophylactic lecithin surface coating and/or due to residual lysolecithin which is produced by the partial enzymatic digestion of lecithin. Data is presented on the contribution of each mechanism to the restored toxicity. Again, this is dependent on the mineral used, the lipase activity applied, and digestion time. Additionally, a system is under development to challenge pulmonary macrophages in culture with native and surfactant treated dusts. A preliminary test of the dipalmitoyl lecithin - quartz rabbit pulmonary macrophage system is presented to illustrate the method.IntroductionRespirable quartz dust exposure is known to cause librotic lung disease; respirable clay dust exposure is less likely to do so as indicated by epidemiologic data on occupational exposures and by animal model studiesP·7) The hypothesis that damage to pulmonary macrophages in the acinar region of the lung by respired dusts is an early event in the disease process requires consideration because kaolin clay and quartz dusts are comparably cytotoxic to pulmonary macrophages in vitro.(3•9)"

For many years it has been considered that an average of 50 percent of the coal in the deposits exploited has been recovered. Owing to many changes in mining methods during the past two decades, this study was initiated to obtain an up-to-date measurement of recovery percentage and thus establish part of the basis from which presently recoverable reserves may be estimated. Recovery percentages were determined within mined areas of 200 underground coal mines. These comprised a statistical sample selected to be representative of operating mines in relation to their significance to depletion of reserves. The results ranged from 29 to 91 percent and averaged 57.0 ± 1.7 percent (95-percent confidence limit). Six factors were identified mathematically as significantly affecting recovery percentages: (1) Pillaring system, (2) top rock and conditions, (3) bottom rock and conditions, (4) marketability, (5) coalbed thickness, and (6) productivity. Skill and attitude of mine operators toward recovery, although not measured, were probable factors. Five other variables that were tested did not show any significant relationship with recovery percentages. Also, five mining equipment features were identified, through discussions with mine officials, as affecting adversely recovery percentage at some mines.

A demountable X-ray tube vacuum spectrograph was designed by the Bureau of Mines for the determination of long-wavelength X-ray spectra from the light elements. This instrument was operated for both secondary and combined primary-secondary excitation of the aluminum K-series. There was an increased analytical sensitivity for elements in period 3, and an indication that with improved X-ray tubes or direct election excitation of the sample, X-ray determination of elements in period 2 is also possible.

This paper is one of a aeries being published by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods and practices used in mining and preparing crushed stone for market. Performance, in terms of units of work or tons produced per machine and per operator man-hour, is given whenever that information can be obtained. Direct operating costs are useful for comparing different methods and are included if available. In addition to descriptions of equipment and methods used the Bureau considered it desirable to discuss the engineering reasons for the choices that have been made, This paper is particularly concerned with the operation of the Liberty quarry and plant of the Campbell Limestone Co, The plant is in Pickens County, adjacent to the main line of the Southern Railway, and is about 18 miles west of Greenville, S, C. The Bureau of Mines measured heat capacities of alpha and beta spodumene (LiAlSi2O5) and of beta eucryptite (LiAlSiO4) over the temperature range 51° to 298° K. The entropies at 298° K were found to be 30.9 ± 0.2 cal/deg mole for alpha spodumene, 36.9 ± 0.3 cal/deg mole for beta spodumene, and 24.8±0.2 cal/deg mole for beta eucryptite. High-temperature heat content measurements above 298° K were conducted for the same compounds. Measurements were made to 1,150° K for alpha spodumene, 1,600° K for beta spodumene, and 1,470° K for beta eucryptite. Tables of heats and free energies of formation are given from the elements and from the constituent oxides.

The " periodic pincer " herein described fills a need for a device to control the rate of flow of a wet ore pulp through an orifice . Two uses of the periodic pincer to be discussed are on classifiers and on a wet ore feeder . Although the immediate necessity that brought about this device was for better operation of a miniature hydraulic classifier , in connection with an investigation of iron- ore concentration being conducted by the Federal · Bureau of Mines , with the cooperation of the University of Alabama , the device has promise of a wider field of application . In the iron - ore work , the need became so acute for a nonchoking , uniform - delivery classifier spigot that development of a suitable device was imperative .

Reduce well construction and operation costs associated with in situ leach mining while increasing mineral recovery. Approach To accommodate the size of centrifugal pumps presently in use, in situ leaching production wells are typically drilled to 6 inches in diameter, while monitor wells are drilled to measure 4 inches in diameter. However, in order to reduce the cost of drilling these larger diameter wells and to increase recovery, the Bureau has developed jet pumps which have smaller diameters than centrifugal pumps of the same capacity. This allows both production and monitor wells to be drilled smaller. Bureau estimates indicate that the cost of drilling a 3-inch-diameter production well at in situ leaching operations would be about 35 percent less than the cost of a 6-inch well. Similarly, the cost of drilling a 2-inch-diameter monitor well would be about 26 percent less than the cost of a 4-inch well. Such significant savings in the cost of drilling these wells would effect a substantial reduction in total capital cost. Use of the new jet pumps can also increase the percentage of recovery because less costly wells allow closer well spacings, improving the distribution of the leach solution. How the System Works After the borehole is cased, the new small-diameter jet pump, along with piping and accessories, is installed and connected to a centrifugal pumping unit on the surface. High-pressure water from the surface pump is forced through a nozzle into the venturi of the jet type pump injector. This jet action lifts the leach and mineral-bearing solution to the surface.

This study was made to determine trends in fresh water usage by California petroleum refineries, to forecast fresh water requirements to 1975, and to evaluate water conservation practices. Statistical data used in the study were obtained largely from published sources and from records of selected companies. An adequate sampling of the State's refining capacity was obtained, and the data were extrapolated to the total California refining capacity. A breakdown of the data was then made on the basis of the following refining regions: (1) the Los Angeles Basin and Southern Coastal region, (2) the Southern San Joaquin Valley, and (3) the San Francisco Bay area. An unpublished forecast of crude oil input to refineries by a major oil company operating on the West Coast was used as a basis for predicting fresh-water usage. The 1963 fresh water intake by California petroleum refineries was 84 million gallons per day. This is expected to increase to 128 million gallons per day by 1975. The fresh-water to crude-oil ratio is increasing in all regions except the Southern San Joaquin Valley. At present, the supply of fresh water available to almost all of the State's petroleum refineries, mostly from surface sources and company-owned wells, is adequate, although shortages may develop within the foreseeable future. Present conservation methods are centered around the following four objectives: (1) minimum intake of fresh water of the lowest possible quality commensurate with sound technologic practice; (2) optimum recirculation; (3) proper treatment before discharge; and (4) substitution of air cooling for water cooling.

In this Bureau of Mines investigation, the low-temperature heat capacities of polycrystalline phases corresponding to the sulfide compounds CoSO?89' CoS1?33, and CoS2 were measured by adiabatic calorimetry within the nominal temperature range 5 to 300 K. The derived absolute entropies S298 were 10.36±O.02, 12.96±O.03, and 16.31±O.03 cal?mol-1?K-l, respectively, assuming third-law behavior. In addition, the standard enthalpy of formation 8Hf298 of CoSO?89 was determined by bromine solution calorimetry. The derived value of 8Hf298 was -50.63±2.1 kcal?mol-1, based on the 8Hf298 of Co0. This result is considerably more negative than previously published formation values based on high-temperature gas equilibrium studies.

The Bureau of Mines investigated chlorination of domestic ilmenites in a fluidized coke bed at temperatures of 950° to 1,150° C. Objectives were to develop an effective process for producing TiC14 suitable for TiO2 pigment and to reduce pollution by collecting and treating waste byproduct chlorides. The reactor for these tests was a 10.2-cm-diam quartz tube heated externally by electrical resistance heaters. It contained coke beds of from 35.6 to 82.5 cm in depth that were fluidized by 13 to 25 l/min of chlorine. Ilmenite concentrate powders were introduced at the bottom of the fluid-bed reactor, using the chlorine gas stream as a carrier. Test results showed that greater than 90 pct of the ilmenite reacted at optimum conditions and recovery of TiC14 ranged from 95 to 99 pct of stoichiometric. A temperature-controlled cyclone was used to remove high-boiling-point chlorides such as MnCl2, MgCl2, and FeCl2, and also collected fine unreacted ilmenite and coke dust. Impure TiC14 and FeC13 were separated by collecting the, iron chloride in a condenser con-trolled at 200° C. Titanium tetrachloride vapor was cleaned by passage-through a salt-column filter followed by condensation in water-cooled and refrigerated condensers. Liquid TiC14 was purified further by well-known industrial methods to meet specifications for pigment-grade chloride. Integrated tests were conducted in which chlorine, produced by dechlorination of FeC13 with oxygen, was recycled and used directly in a fluidized-bed chlorinator.

Bureau of MinesThe Bureau of Mines studied the development of practical methods for recovering manganese from the extensive domestic resources of low-grade ores and open hearth slags. A one-step operation was developed on a laboratory scale in which manganese and iron compounds are treated with chlorine, volatilized, and separated by selective condensation. Manganese recoveries of 90 to nearly 100 percent were obtained from 9 of the most important domestic ores. Analyses of the manganese chloride product indicated that it was suit-able for aqueous electrolysis with little additional purification. A complete, integrated process that provides for the recovery and recycling of chlorine is proposed. This process appears to have distinct advantages over previously proposed manganese recovery processes, and, in sharp contrast to leaching procedures, it is applicable to practically any manganese-bearing material.

Bureau of Mines Information Circular 16, Bibliography of Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants, was published in October 1949 as an aid in making estimates of investment and operating costs of processes for manufacturing synthetic liquid fuels. Development of such processes by the Bureau of Mines was authorized by Public Law 290, 78th Congress. This bibliography included refer¬ences to and abstracts of publications appearing from 1930 to September 1948 on all processes in general use in the petroleum refining and chemical industries. Publications in this field have been numerous since compilation of the above bibliography, and the present report was prepared to cover the field from September 1948 through June 1952.3/

High resolution seismic refraction tomography has proved to be a useful tool to effectively estimate depth of blast induced damage in a mine face. Excavation blast damage can be as shallow as 1 to 2m and requires resolution at a fraction of a meter for effective imaging. We used an accelerometer with flat frequency response to 1000Hz to record data at spacings of approximately 0.25 to 0.5m along mine walls. First arrival times from the seismic data were used to produce P-wave velocity tomograms. The tomograms show transition from low velocity zones to velocity associated with competent rock. We interpret the low velocity zones to indicate residual fracturing from blasting. Experiments on a concrete test block and at two underground mine locations give results that are consistent with fractured rock transitioning to competent rock. Our method can be applied efficiently in an underground environment to provide continuous velocity information with depth into a mine wall over a span of approximately 10m.

In the Unfederated Malay States, with the exception of Johore, the rights of suzerainty, protection, and administration were transferred by giam to the British Government in 1909. In the States of Kelantan, Trengganu, Kedah, and Perlis, the rulers are assisted by State Councils and by British advisers appointed by the British Government.3 With respect to Johore, the largest, richest, and most highly organized of the Malay States not in the Federation, the treaty of December 11, 1885, with Great Britain, defined the relations of the State to the British Govern- ment and allowed the Maharaja to assume the title of "Sultan"; an amendment to this treaty (May 12, 1914) provided that the Sultan should be advised by a British officer, the General Adviser. ...... The political organization of the States is reflected in the mining legis- lation, Johore being the only one having a comprehensive code. Traditionally the Pacific Northwest has relied on hydroelectric power, which has been both abundant and cheap. However, comparatively few hydroelectric sites capable of providing low-cost power remain, therefore the need for supplemental thermal generation, perhaps within the next decade, is generally recognized. Based on the present cost and availability of competing fuels, coal seems to be the logical choice for projected thermal power plants. Power companies and public utilities have become interested in establishing reserves of coal for future use. One deposit explored in 1958-59 lies in southern Thurston and northern Lewis Counties, Wash., near Centralia. Drilling, totaling 22,700 feet, proved the existence of 70 million tons of strippable coal--an ample reserve for the projected power plant. The coal, like most others and particularly those of Washington and Oregon, when mined in full seam section by mechanical methods, would require cleaning to make it suitable for use. The amount and nature of the impurities in this coal dictated a thorough investigation of its cleaning characteristics to establish economic factors and to insure proper preparation-plant design. Therefore, arrangements were made through a cooperative agreement to conduct such work at the Seattle Coal Research Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines. This report describes that investigation. The results are of interest primarily in connection with the utilization of this particular deposit, but some of the information developed is applicable to other deposits of low-rank coals in the West, because the impurities in these coals differ greatly in behavior from those generally associated with the higher rank coals of the Appalachian field.

The Pilgrim mine, operated by the Pioneer Gold Mining Co., is 9-1/2 miles west of Chloride in the Pilgrim mining district on the eastern slope of the Black Mountains, or River Range, Mohave County, Ariz. In March 1937, 100 tons of gold ore per day were being mined and milled at the property by a total force of 5i men. Climatic conditions allow year-round operations. Due to present activity in the county there is an ample supply of labor for the requirements of the mine. The Pilgrim is the only producing property within s radius of 6 miles; recently, however, the South Pilgrim Mining Co. has launched a development campaign on claims that adjoin the Pioneer Co. property to the south.

A reasonably clear and broad definition of occupational disease as originated by the Supreme Court of Ohio is: "A disease contracted in the usual and ordinary course of events which from the common experience of humanity is known to be incident to a particular employment." An ailment does not become an occupational disease simply because it is contracted on the employer's premises. It must be one that is commonly regarded as natural to, inherent in, and concomitant of the work in question. The important distinction between accidental-traumatic injuries and occupational-disease injuries is that accidents occur at specific times, ordinarily are discovered readily, and usually leave no question as to the particular employer it whose development the accident occurred. On the other hand, occupational diseases may develop slowly, unknown to the employer and employee until disability occurs, and the injuries sustained are continuing disabilities over an extended period of time and may be incurred while the employee is working for one of several employers.

The Bureau of Mines examined the wellbore of a vertical gas drainage well in the Mary Lee coalbed to determine the results of specific completion procedures in coal. A jet-slotting tool was used to cut four vertical slots through the casing about 1 ft below the coalbed. Even though stimulation treatment pressure was excessive, hydraulically induced channels were contained entirely within the target coal zone. Sand-filled, induced channels were horizontal, inclined, and vertical, and were propagated in directions similar to bedding planes, rock joint, and coal cleat directions measured in the mine. Variable gas flow rates, recorded during the productive life of the well, were attributed to chronic downhole pump malfunction and the slotted casing below the production zone.
