This report describes the development, construction and testing of a hydrogen-fueled underground mining vehicle. A hydrogen burning engine and a hydride fuel system, both previously developed, were installed on a modified utility vehicle, together with the necessary controls. In tests and in actual use, the vehicle performance in terms of speed, acceleration, and gradeability exceeded that of the standard, unmodified vehicle.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating possible applications of acoustic energy at sonic and ultrasonic frequencies in petroleum production. A phase of this work involves measuring sound velocity through petroleum reservoir rocks. References and abstracts were prepared as a bibliography to make available to others some of the material obtained from a literature search covering the past applications and the present uses of sound. Laboratory and theoretical studies of the various parameters that influence the velocity of sound in porous media account for the wealth of information now available. Velocity of propagation of sound waves in porous sediments as a function of depth is a quantity frequently measured. Velocity logging systems, capable of measuring speed of sound waves in underground formations penetrated by wells, have been developed for interpretative studies. The close relation between acoustic velocity and porosity makes it possible to determine porosity from velocity logs. Most velocity log interpretation in terms of porosity is based on a formula developed by Wyllie and others known as the time-average relation.

This Bureau of Mines publication reviews the structural characteristics of crystalline phases and phase equilibria data for the system NaC1-KC1-AlC13-NaF-KF-AlF3, which encompasses a large number of molten salt fluxes currently used in aluminum recycling. Its purpose is to provide guidelines for research into the relationships between molten salt compositions and their physical properties, notably vapor pressures, densities, surface tensions, and viscosities, knowledge of which is essential to maximizing fluxing efficiencies and metal recovery and minimizing hazardous emissions and disposal problems. In addition, this report describes experimental determinations of sub-solidus compatibility relationships in the system, which is of the quaternary reciprocal type, containing 12 different stable 4-phase assemblages in the solid state. The compatibility diagram serves to define the important compositional planes across which important changes in properties are likely to occur.

Since 1910 the Bureau of Mines has given training in the care and use of oxygen breathing apparatus under conditions that may exist during mine fires and after mine explosions. In 1929 the Bureau supplemented this instruction by initiating a course in advanced mine rescue training to prepare mine officials and others to organize men for mine rescue and recovery operations. The course of instruction has been developed and expanded since its inception to keep abreast with new ideas, methods, and equipment. Four miners' circulars were issued to be used in the training course. The first of this series (Miners' Circular 33) deals with mine gases and the various methods of detecting them; the second (Miners' Circular 34) gives instructions for sampling and analyzing mine atmospheres; the third (this circular) describes methods and equipment for protection against mine gases; and the fourth (Miners' Circular 36) explains procedures in sealing and unsealing mine fires and in conducting recovery operations, These circulars have been revised from time to time to keep them up to date.

Although secondary-recovery methods have not been applied widely in California, it is apparent that increasing attention and effort must be given to this phase of recovery if the State is to maintain its high rank as a petroleum producer. Steadily increasing demands for petroleum products and decreasing rates of discovery of new oil fields, with rapid depletion of existing reserves, emphasize the prospect of an adverse situation of supply and demand in the not-far-distant future. If the trend of discoveries becomes more favorable or if more complete economic recovery of the oil in place can be obtained by secondary recovery, this situation can be averted. Not only are these reserves of economic importance to the petroleum industry for meeting increasing market demands; but economic reclamation of such reserves is an important conservation measure, which will prolong the productive life of many fields. Accordingly, progressive operators in California are alert to the possibilities of secondary recovery and have done much to implement such operations wherever feasible. Most current operations are of the pressure-maintenance type, in which the reservoir pressure is maintained or partly maintained by injecting natural gas to in-crease oil recovery. The possibilities of recovering additional oil from stripper fields by gas drive and water flooding (including water disposal) also are being tested in experimental field projects. Table 1 summarizes current gas-and water-injection projects in California.

"INTRODUCTION The Cphir Hill Consolidated mine was examined 2/ in January 1944. It was recommended that the mine be explored for the purpose of increasing of lead and zinc ore.The Bureau of Mines began exploratory work at the mine in June 1944 and completed it in June 1945. The work was planned to indicate ore that could be developed and extracted quickly and consisted of core drilling and trenching.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Its the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by cash exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, O. C. Ralston, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests.The work reported on in this paper was conducted under the supervision of S. R. Zinmerly, removal engineer of the Western Region, and J. A. Marsh, district engineer of the Utah-Wyoming district. Subsequent to May 1945, the project was under the supervision of Paul T. Allman, chief, Salt Lake City Division, Mining Branch. The management and employees of the Ophir Development Co. wore very cooperative. This study was a part of two programs: The first, to develop and evaluate high-temperature refractories; the second, to investigate reaction-rate kinetics and phase equilibria in the sinter step of the lime-soda process for the recovery of alumina. High-temperature X-ray diffractometer techniques are to be used extensively in both programs. This paper summarizes developments in the field of high-temperature X-ray diffractometers through 1959, evaluates various furnace designs, and describes briefly the X-ray diffraction facilities of the Federal Bureau of Mines. A more detailed description of the equipment and its calibration is planned in a future paper on thermal expansion and phase inversion of rare-earth oxides.

"The interaction of amorphous 1ilica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O, C2H5OH, C7H2NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction or surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C7H2NO > C2H5OH > H2O. Index Headings: Silica; Surface vibrational modes; Photoacoustic spectroscopy; Hydrogen bonding agents.INTRODUCTIONThe use of m spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature.1 2 For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1• Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-5 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity, 7- 9 catalysis, 10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8NO), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by m spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples11 have used transmission m spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties. In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18•19 Moreover, according to a recent paper, 20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry. In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H50H, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface m modes. Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents. Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16•17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification. The chemistry involved in the microbial dissolution of iron and copper from such sulfide minerals as pyrite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, cove11ite, and bornite is described. The chemical criteria used to evaluate the activity of microorganisms on these minerals were changes in pH, ferric iron produced, and oxygen consumption. In a series of experiments in which a ferrous sulfate nutrient solution was percolated over small portions of the above-mentioned copper sulfide minerals for 56 days, the iron-oxidizing bacteria Ferrobaci11us ferrooxidans and Thiobaci11us ferrooxidans were capable of bringing about the dissolution of 23.7 percent of the copper from chalcocite, 56.3 percent of the copper from cove11ite, and 29.8 percent of the copper from bornite by the microbial production of ferric sulfate which reacted with these minerals. Laboratory tests have demonstrated that pure strains of the iron-oxidizing bacteria act as catalysts to the ferrous iron being oxidized by the Oxygen of a system containing pyrite and chalcopyrite. In a series of experiments during which nutrient solution was percolated over pyrite for 70 days, the ferric iron produced by the iron-oxidizing bacteria was 112 to 120 times greater than that produced atmospherically.

During the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples from four properties in Siskiyou and Mendocino Counties northern California. As the ores were too low-grade to be acceptable to manufacturers of ferromanganese, beneficiation studies were made between 1941 and 1945 to determine the amenability of the ores to concentration. The Johnson and Reynolds properties are near Fort Jones Siskiyou County. The ore occurs in a number of small lenses in that area. Samples were taken for testing for amenability to treatment in a small custom-gravity plant, tentatively planned. by the Waiter Johnson interests of San Francisco. A 2-ton representative sample was obtained from numerous exposed portions of an outcrop on the property of the Mayland Mining Co. The Mayland mine is about 8 miles from Sawyers Bar in Siskiyou County. The ore body consists of stringers and irregular masses of oxide, and. silicate ore scattered through quartz, which these minerals have replaced.

To evaluate the potential use of battery-powered vehicles, the Bureau of Mines studied the performance of a battery-powered truck propelled by a 9.6 kw dc motor in considerable detail under various driving conditions. Some of the factors investigated were: Gear ratios, payload (1,468 lb maximum), road grade, stops made per mile, and charging time. With the exception of some difficulty with brush wear, operation and maintenance of the truck was generally trouble-free. On range tests carrying an 868-lb payload a distance of about 50 miles at an average speed of about 19 mph in normal driving, the Bureau's battery-powered truck averaged 1.6 to 1.9 miles per ac kwhr input. Stop-and-go tests indicated that prospects for the use of battery-powered trucks in house delivery service within city limits are good; performance of the Bureau truck was sufficiently high for that type of service. The estimated power cost of 2.65 cents per mile while making 10 stops per mile was attractively low from the standpoint of fuel costs.

A gas well has a certain definite capacity to deliver gas from the gas sand through the producing string of pipe. This capacity depends upon the pressures in the sand; that is, a well will deliver gas at a rate of flow which is determined by the formation or "shut-inn pressure in the sand and the back pressure at the face of the sand in the well. The three factors, rate of flow, formation or "shut-in" pressure, and the back pressure, for a given well, can be written into a fundamental relation which is strictly applicable only to that well. This relation can be used to determine the capacity of the well to deliver gas from any formation pressure against any back pressure held at the f ace of the sand in the well. Studies have been made of the deliveries of 400 gas wells operating under different conditions of pressure, Most of the wells which have been studied are in Osage County, Okla.; however, several representative studies have been made on wells in southern Louisiana, southern Texas, the Texas Panhandle, and West Virginia.

In order to evaluate the corrosion resistance of zirconium in mineral extraction processes, such as a clay-hydrochloric acid leaching process for extracting alumina, the Bureau of Mines conducted corrosion studies in HCl-AlC13-FeC13 environments. A series of weight loss and electrochemical tests were conducted at 25° and 65° C in aluminum chloride (AlC13) plus hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions containing 0 to 1,000 ppm ferric ion. It was determined that zirconium, which normally exists in a passive state in chloride-containing solutions, undergoes pitting attack in solutions containing more than 100 ppm of ferric ion. It is also shown that an oxide film prepared in air at high temperature offers protection in acid solutions containing levels of ferric ion from 300 to 1,000 ppm.

Ground support for metal, nonmetal, and coal mines was examined through fill placement with a pneumatic stower to increase extraction, reduce ground pressures, and improve general mine safety. Several pneumatically stowed stope-fill products were tested to determine the effects of specific gravity, gradation, moisture, and impact velocity on the in-place density of the stowed fill. Hydraulic sand filling has now served the mining industry for several decades but because of the low density does not always provide ample support to the hanging wall; therefore, the sill and crown pillars sometimes build up excessive stresses that are detrimental to mining. Cementation of a dense fill adjacent to a pillar to allow 100-pct extraction of the pillar, or a fill that can be placed without the use of water and where water is a detriment to rubber-tired mining equipment, was found to be a possible use of pneumatic fill. Placing of coal mine washery products into abandoned underground workings is another possibility in order to completely eliminate surface impoundments.

"INTRODUCTION Approximately 1,250,000 tons of 2-1/2-inch and 1-1/2-inch slack, representing over half of the output from 40 to 50 mines, is produced in the Denver region each year. Part of this slack is made by crushing lump, and some of it is rescreened to make pea and modified pea sizes measuring 1-1/2 inches by 2-1/2 inches and 3/4-inch by 1-1/2 inches, round-hole. Modified pea is popular as domestic stoker fuel. Approximately 900,000 tons of slack 0 by 2-1/2 inches, 0 by 1-1/ 2 inches, and 0 by 3/4-inch in size are consumed by industrial plants, the principal consumers being a large power plant and the beet-sugar industry. The power plant uses annually 250,000 to 275,000 tons of pulverized fuel and can pulverize slack of any size, while the sugar factories consume about the same quantity of coal in stokers. The sugar factories store about 110,000 tons of 2-1/2-inch slack under water from January to October, and burn the remainder of their consumption directly during the campaign season from October to December. For this purpose, sugar-factory power plants can use any size of slack, which is recrushed to pass a 3/4- or 1/2-inch screen before burning on chain-grate stokers. About one-third of the 2-1/ 2- inch slack produced in the field is used in smaller industrial plants that employ stokers.Certain factors affect the utilization of 2-1/2-inch slack in the Denver region. The increasing production of hydroelectric power has reduced the consumption of coal at power plants slightly. If more hydropower is generated, the trend of consumption of slack might be downward, unless industrial activity offsets this greater output. Rapid increase in number of domestic stokers during recent years has necessitated preparation of greater quantities of stoker coal, with the result that more lump is crushed, and preparation facilities are changed. At present about 19 percent of the coal produced is crushed to meet the constant demand for industrial fuel as well as the increasing but variable demand for the small domestic stoker sizes. The quantity crushed has increased 12 percent during the last 6 years. These factors are shifting constantly. The trend toward the use of clean and smaller sizes for domestic stokers gives a slack having a larger proportion of fines. In future, even greater quantities of small stoker coal probably will be prepared, and the resulting greater quantities of small slack will have to be used for industrial purposes."

For the first time the Bureau of Mines is combining, in one report, comprehensive tabulations on both beehive and slot-type ovens. This publication presents statistical data on the number and capacity of all such coke ovens in the United States on December 31, 1957. Combining data on both types of ovens should prove helpful to those interested in keeping abreast of the latest changes in carbonizing capacity, particularly since the coke has similar properties and uses. Annual reports furnished to the Bureau of Mines by coke-oven operators shared that 78 oven-coke plants were operating in 22 States on December 31, 1957. This was a decline of one plant from December 31, 1956, as the Republic Steel Corp. took the ovens at Canton, Ohio, out of production on December 17, 1957, for dismantling and rebuilding in 1958. Total oven-coke capacity was 80,299,400 tons in 1957.
