The production of oil during the early development of new oil fields is usually accompanied by large quantities of natural gas. Since in most fields gas under pressure is the main source of the energy causing the oil to move through the sands into the wells and thence to the surface, coincident production of natural gas will continue as long as present-day producing methods are used. Generally the use of this gas is restricted, since markets are not readily available. Consequently, a large portion of the gas produced is often wasted by being blown into the air. The magnitude of gas waste is well brought out in the following statement by Miller: Only a few outstanding examples need be cited to show the enormous production of gas that accompanies the discovery of new sources. In April, 1927, the Ventura field produced approximately 210,000,000 cubic feet of gas a day; and during the summer of 1927 Alamitos Heights reached a peak gas production of 102,000,000 cubic feet a day; on December 1, 1928, as a result of the summer's deeper drilling in the Long Beach field, surplus gas production amounted to 125,000,000 cubic feet a day. It is estimated that in January, 1929, the Santa Fe Springs field will have a daily gas production of 387,000,000 cubic feet from the recently discovered Buckbee oil zone. Of this amount 274,000,000 cubic feet a day will be the surplus above the amount required for field and plant fuel, taken out by utility corporations, and that used in repressuring the Meyer sand which lies above the Buckbee zone. Another example of the waste of large volumes of gas is in the Turner Valley field of Canada, 6 where 250,000,000 cubic feet of gas is being burned daily in flambeaus, as there is no present outlet except at prohibitive cost.

The rapid; depletion of' known high-grade ore deposits in the Tri -State lead-zinc district and the recognized need for the development of additional reserves led the Bureau of Mines to make preliminary examination of sites possibly adaptable to low-cost open-pit mining methods. Abandoned mines whose ore deposits were known to have occurred at shallow depths naturally presented favorable test points for the development of possible open-pit orebodies. The Lone Elm mine was in this category.

The King Mountain study area is centered about 120 air km northwest of Blackfoot, and 30 air km north of Arco, Idaho. The study area makes up the southern one-third of the northwest-trending Lost River Range--the highest mountain range in Idaho. The area is predominantly underlain by Paleozoic-age marine limestone and lesser dolostone, with a relatively small inlier of silica-rich, Ordovician-age quartzite. There are vast, unquantified resources of these industrial minerals present; however, special markets need to be developed for these resources which are near enough for transportation costs to be competitive. Five prospects were found in the study area; however, only one, the Elbow quartz silica prospect, contains resources and current claims. There has been no mineral production in the study area.

This report details the testing and evaluation of a modular azimuth and positioning system (MAPS) to provide navigational information for a continuous mining machine. Vehicle navigation is part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines research program in computer-assisted mining serving as a tool to increase mining health, safety, and productivity. The Bureau is investigating other navigation systems, but MAPS seems to have the most promise. MAPS was installed on a continuous mining machine. An operator used the machine to cut coal while researchers collected machine and MAPS data. A comparison of MAPS data for xy position and data obtained with an electronic transit showed an increasing error for MAPS. After 30 min of operation, the easting position error was -0.02 m, and the northing position error was 0.019 m; after 60 min of operation, the easting position error was -0.19 m, and the northing position error was -0.26 m. Modifications to MAPS software and to the operational procedure of the machine significantly reduced this error by a factor of 3.7. Researchers continue to reduce these errors.

This report deals with the factors which should be considered in evaluating a placer deposit and selecting a dredging system for mineral recovery. Overall dredging feasibility and the design of dredging systems are reviewed. Excavation methods, each with its advantages and disadvantages, are compared. Direct operating costs, both original and updated, of gold dredges with bucket capacities of 6 to 18 cubic feet are included. Costs vary with digging depth, changes in environmental conditions, and physical characteristics of the placer, all of which affect excavation rate and recovery. The costs, updated with appropriate indexes, should be used only as guidelines to evaluate potential dredging projects with similar characteristics. The relation of direct dredging costs to annual production is graphically illustrated by a family of curved envelopes that span dredge sizes from 2-112 to 18 cubic feet. A curve fitted to the data expresses the relation of direct costs to annual production for 151 dredge-years.

This Country Documentation Report presents the development of economic indices for Zambia for the period from 1970 through 1981. The work done through the Bureau of' Mines, Minerals Availability Program, under Contract number J0225001. This contract calls for the development of twelve index time series describing factor input costs in the mining sector of 95 countries. The twelve index time series describe the costs of: 1) mining wages, 2) construction wages, 3) equipment and repair parts, 4) bits and related steel, 5) timber and lumber, 6) fuel, 7) powder and blasting agents, 8) tires, 9) construction materials, 10) industrial materials, 11) transportation, and 12) electrical power. These indices combined with weight factors being developed by the personnel of the Minerals Availability Field Office (MAFO) of the Bureau of Mines in Denver, Colorado, will be used to perform instantaneous updates of all costs relating to the mining industry. The indices were developed primarily for use in the Bureau's Minerals Availability Program in assessing the worldwide availability of nonfuel minerals.

This report describes a primary or direct, continuously sampling, and automatically averaging gravimetric method for analyzing gaseous mixtures of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide) hydrogen, and (by volume measurement) nitrogen. The gaseous mixture is analyzed by passing it at a controlled and definite rate through a system that permits carbon dioxide and water retained by appropriate absorbents to be determined and the residual-gas volume (essentially nitrogen) to be measured. The accuracy and dependability have been established by comparison with very carefully conducted Orsat analyses. The method was developed for, and has been satisfactorily applied to, the analysis of blast-furnace top gas. It permits relatively attention free operation, using simple and low-cost materials usually found as basic equipment in the analytical laboratory. It provides, over a wide range of time or sampling intervals (from less than 1 to over 24 hours), the average composition, in terms of volume-percent, for those components usually determined in blast-furnace gas, if (as is usual) the flow rate of gas from the blast furnace is essentially constant over a selected analysis interval. Oxygen and methane are not determined; but, since these gases are normally absent or present only in traces, their analysis is seldom required.

The material presented in this chapter is a review of the work done during the period from June 23, 1972 to June 22, 1973 which was reported in detail in the first annual report for Grant No. 60122088 which was submitted on June 29, 1973. This report has appeared in the National Technical Information Service as bulletin number PB230 972/AS. 1.2 ANALYTICAL PREDICTIONS OF INDUCED VOLTAGES AND CURRENTS The basic building block in this analytical work is the development of an equivalent circuit. The equivalent circuit for the cable depends on all of the distributed parameters of the cable, although the series inductance and resistance are of primary importance. The cable resistances are generally available from handbooks or from cable manufacturers. On the other hand, the cable inductances are not usually available from either handbooks or the manufacturer's published data. Thus, it is useful to present the results of the derivation of the inductance matrix and a few intermediate steps.

The Bureau of Mines tested chromium-bearing waste slags from industrial stainless steel and other chrome alloy operations to determine their chromium leachability characteristics under acid precipitation conditions and to devise measures to prevent any pollution originating from this source. Two critical slag composition factors were found to control the chromium leachability: (1) CaO:Si02 ratio and (2) magnesium content. Above a 2.0 CaO:Si02 ratio, chromium exists in slag as CaO·Cr203, which can be vulnerable to leaching by acid precipitation especially if oxi-dized to CaCr04 when exposed to the environment over an extended period. Maximum chromium leachability from industrial slags occurred when the composition of the slag had about a 2.0 CaO:Si02 ratio. Between a 1.0 and 2.0 CaO:Si02 ratio, in the presence of sufficient magnesium, MgO ·Cr203 was formed, which is very resistant to oxidation and to dissolution by simulated acid precipitation. Addition of magnesium silicates to molten slag to fix the chromium in the MgO·Cr203 form was successful in preventing chromium leaching in simulated acid rain solutions. Experiments showed olivine and waste taconite tailings were suitable for this purpose. Olivine addition to a waste slag having a composition vulnerable to leaching (CaO:Si02 > 2) reduced the chromium leachability more than 80 pct.

A molecular beam-mass spectrometer-low pressure flat flame apparatus has been constructed for the purpose of examining the chemical microstructure of normal methane-oxygen-argon flames and those inhibited with Halon extinguishants. Details of construction and performance of this apparatus and of related flame temperature measurements are given. Particular attention is paid to the empirical characterization of the perturbation to the flame caused by the sampling probes. The composition profiles obtained for normal flames are compared to those of flames inhibited by CF3Br. In addition to the usual stable species (CH4, O2, CO, CO2, H2O, H2, and H2CO), the inhibitor, its products and intermediates associated with its reactions could be followed. In particular, hydrogen bromide, bromine atoms, hydrogen fluoride, and carbonyl fluoride were observed. The relatively rapid disappearance of inhibitor and early appearance of fluorinated reaction products suggest a short lifetime for the CF3 radical in this system. Observation of COF2 suggests that CF3Br is effective as an inhibitor, at least in part, by virtue of its interference with the oxygen containing species of the normal chain reaction. Profiles of the 17+ peak at low electron energy suggests that the hydroxyl radical may also be sampled, but the profiles obtained are not yet sufficiently accurate to determine the effect of inhibitor on this important flame radical.

Conservation in the utilization of any product is always subject to improvement if the composition and properties of the product are known. Petroleum is no exception, and knowledge of the characteristics of crude oils, even when given on the broad basis of routine type analyses has proved useful to chemists, engineers, and geologists in improving pro- duction and utilization of petroleum. For a quarter of a century the Bureau of Mines has sought to provide such information regarding crude oils and has analyzed many samples of petroleum by its standardized rou- tine method. Most of these analyses have been published, sometimes in special compilations, other times in connection with reports of research on petroleum. This report is a finding index for all analyses published up to January 1, 1948. The routine method used for all these analyses is basically the same as that described by Dean, et al.. Briefly, the procedure consists of testing by standard methods, small samples of a crude oil for gravity, sulfur, color, and viscosity, and of distilling a sample of the crude oil by a standardized procedure and determining certain properties in the sep- arated fractions and residuum. Careful records are made during the proce- dure, and the distillation data obtained are used to calculate the approx- imate amounts of products present in the sample such as percents of gas- oline, kerosine, gas oil, and lubricants. The data obtained are recorded on a standard analytical report form. An analysis of a sample of typical midcontinent crude oil is shown in table 1. Compilation of these analyses, sometimes in tabular form and usually for specific geographic areas, are published from time to time. Analyses are often shown in connection with other studies, such as engineering field reports. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is the most common occupational illness in the United States, with 30 million workers exposed to excessive noise levels [NIOSH 1996] every day. Of particular concern is the mining industry; which has the highest prevalence of hazardous noise exposure of any major industry sector [Tak et al. 2009] and is second only to the railroad industry in prevalence of work-ers reporting hearing difficulty [Tak and Calvert 2008]. This document is for operators, safety personnel, and mechanics in the mining industry who are not specialists in noise control engineering or acoustics. Evaluations of successful and unsuccessful attempts at controlling noise on several large, underground metal mining machines are detailed to illustrate the basic principles of noise control. Once personnel understand the guidelines and principles of noise control, they will be able to ¦evaluate the extent of a noise problem; ¦determine the best approach to the problem; and ¦apply the most appropriate solution. Because of the insidious nature of NIHL, it can go unnoticed until a considerable loss of hearing has occurred. In some cases, diagnosis is delayed because an exposed individual claims to have become accustomed to the noise. In reality, that person may have already suffered irreversible hearing loss. Humans can hear sounds in the frequency range from about 20 to 20,000 Hertz (Hz). Within this range, NIHL usually begins in the frequency region around 4,000?6,000 Hz, the upper levels of the speech region. The first noticeable symp-toms include difficulty understanding higher pitched voices, such as the voices of females and children, and difficulty understanding certain consonant sounds, which are primarily high frequency in nature. The extent of NIHL varies depending on the level and duration of noise exposure and on an individual?s susceptibility; despite having similar noise exposure, individuals can experience differing degrees of hearing loss, or none at all. NIHL is almost always preventable. To reduce or eliminate the possibility of NIHL, an individual?s noise environment must be analyzed and appropriate action taken to reduce noise exposure.

In this U.S. Bureau of Mines report, two drill-split mechanical excavation mining system concepts are described, casted, and cost compared with conventional drill-blast mining systems. The concepts for the two drill-split mechanical excavation mining systems presented are (1) a method for steeply dipping narrow veins 0.6 to 1.2 m wide and (2) a longwall method for fiat-lying tabular ores. In the proposed systems, 70 to 80 pet of the ore is disposed of underground as backfill. For sortable ores, face area crushing, sorting, and direct stowage of run-of-mine waste and low-grade ores are proposed. The underground sorting and stowing of waste reduce materials handling, processing, and waste disposal costs by reducing the quality of ore transported to the surface by 70 to 80 pet (by volume). Because many of the tools and techniques proposed for use in these systems have little or no historical mining industry use, cost assignations are heavily influenced by engineering judgments and presented as prefeasibility-level cost estimates. These estimates, presented as discounted-cash-flow-rate-of-return (DCFROR) values, show the proposed systems to be at least as profitable as, and in some cases 50 pet more profitable than, conventional drill-blast mining.

The Mateen deposit comprises two large spodumene-bearing pegmatite dikes that outcrop along the, side and crest of a hill overlooking 'Rill City in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota. The Bureau of Mines investigated the Mateen deposit as part of a comprehensive study of the lithium mineral-production possibilities in the Black Hills area. The work was undertaken during the second World War, when the demand for certain lithium salts and compounds exceeded the small productive capacity of the industry. During the course of the investigation, the Bureau of Mines took 61 large channel samples from surface trenches, 4 channel samples from a shaft, and 3 from the face of an open cut. In addition, 8 diamond core-drill holes were completed to investigate the attitude of one of the dikes at depth. Metallurgical tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the feasibility of beneficiating spodumene-bearing ores from the Mateen dikes.

The Federal Bureau of Mines examined a low-temperature tar obtained from a small-scale commercial unit for carbonizing North Dakota lignite for products that might be important to the economic processing of the tar. Tie tar may be divided into three distinct parts: (1) Tar acids, 45 volume-percent; (2) tar bases, 1 volume percent; and (3) neutral compounds, 54 volume-percent. It has a boiling range of approximately 150° to 380° C. (the decomposition temperature) and yields 18 weight-percent as hard pitch. The tar distillate up to 365° C. may be separated as: (1) Tar acids, 48 volume-percent; (2) tar bases, 1 volume-percent; and (3) hydrocarbons, 51 volume-percent. The tar-acid distillate, boiling to approximately 265° C., was characterized in some detail; the neutral fractions and the tar bases were less thoroughly examined. In general, as might be expected of a primary low-temperature tar, the lower boiling fractions are less in quantity compared with the usual high-temperature tar. The homologous series of each major class appears to be rather complete, although some components are present in very small amounts. The tar is quite unstable thermally, and might be more conveniently processed by extraction methods rather than by distillation procedures. The neutral fraction of the tar is highly aromatic, and might be considered as base stock for the production of liquid fuels.

To determine the nahcolite and dawsonite content in oil shales, the Bureau of Mines compared X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermal methods, and a previously published method by Smith and Young based on the selective solubility of sodium compounds. The Smith and Young method and a new method based on the weight of carbon dioxide produced by thermal decomposition are recommended for determining nahcolite. X-ray diffraction and the Smith and Young method are recommended for determining dawsonite. X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and differential thermal analysis were useful for identifying other minerals in the samples.

The samples tested were taken from commercial shipments and have been selected to represent the principal coal producing areas of the country . Due to combining the analytical results from two separate surveys , values for the four elements are not available for all samples .
