This investigation was conducted to determine the effects of various rare-earth metal addition practices upon the macrostructure and the pattern of sulfur distribution in steel ingots. Heats of plain carbon steel were melted in a 1-ton, basic electric-arc furnace. Melts were treated with mixtures of rare-earth silicides, aluminum, and cryolite either in the furnace before tap or in the ladle after tap to determine the effects of this form of rare-earth treatment upon ingot macrostructure. Steels thus treated with rare earths in the furnace were characteristically free of the gross subsurface nonmetallics which typically result from conventional rare-earth treatments. Steel treated in the ladle showed only a few such nonmetallics, and practical techniques were developed for eliminating most of these. Results showed that furnace deoxidation was controlled by the concentration ratio of rare earths: aluminum. During casting, deoxidation was controlled by the concentration of rare earths. Oxygen contents equivalent to vacuum ladle degassing resulted from air-melt furnace treatments with the rare-earth mixtures described. Rare earths in steel inhibited the onset of equiaxed grain formation during ingot freezing, and also virtually prevented interdendritic segregation of sulfides.

Progress made in a second and final metallurgical investigation made by the Bureau of Mines of near-surface Hawaiian bauxitic deposits from Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii Islands, and on a deeper deposit from Kauai, is reported. Previously reported Al2O3 extractions were increased by modifying conventional processes to fit the ore being tested. Increases in Al2O3 extraction were: Kauai, from 82.8 to 95.4 percent; Maui, 85.5 to 94.1 percent; and Hawaii, from 79.5 to 86.4 percent. Use of a "caustic-reduction sinter, leaching, and magnetic separation process" for Al2O3 extraction also produced an iron concentrate of commercial grade, except for titanium content. No successful method was developed for the recovery of a satisfactory titanium concentrate.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 256 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 17 States. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1977 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. Nineteen previous publications have presented the results of 11,317 gas analyses prior to 1977. The first three, Bulletins 486,4 576,5 and 617,6 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960. The other 16

Thermal reactions of l-methylpyrrole, l-butylpyrrole, and l-isopropyl-pyrrole were investigated by a flow method in the temperature range of 4500 to 5750 C. Those of I-butylpyrrole and l-isopropylpyrrole were also investigated in the 3400 to 4000 C range in a static system. The I-substituted pyrroles isomerize by an irreversible reaction to 2-substituted pyrroles. A reversible isomerization reaction shifted the alkyl group from the 2-to the 3-position on the pyrrole ring. All of the isomerization reactions are homogeneous, unimolecular, nonchain, first-order reactions having similar mechanisms and transition states. There is decomposition and cleavage of the longer alkyl side chain when it is in either the 2-or 3-position giving, as products, pyrrole, 2-and 3-methylpyrrole, 2-and 3-ethylpyrrole, pyridines, and hydrocarbons. The decomposition reactions appear to be by free-radical mechanisms. Pyridine homologs are formed by the expansion of the alkylpyrrole: butylpyrrole produces pyridine, and isopropylpyrrole produces 3-methylpyridine. Approximate Arrhenius equations are given for the formation of the decomposition products.

Results are presented of a comprehensive study of the characteristics of the original oil in the Weber sandstone reservoir, Rangely oil field, Colorado. Through the medium of subsurface sampling, adequately representative samples of the original reservoir oil were obtained from many parts of the reservoir over a period of 5 years concurrent with active development of the reservoir. Data of differential gas liberation, pressure-viscosity, and. pressure-volume-temperature relationships are shown for 12 subsurface oil samples. Data also are given of reservoir pressure and. temperature, composition of liberated or solution Gas, composition of 22 produced-gas samples, and Hempel analyses of crude-oil samples from 18 wells. The characteristics or physical properties of the 12 subsurface oil samples, as determined by laboratory analyses, were correlated with elevation of the top of the Weber sandstone. These relationships of oil characteristics to elevation in the reservoir show that only the oil in contact with the initial gas cap was gas-saturated at the existing pressure and temperature. The characteristics of the original reservoir oil were marked by an appreciable decrease of saturation pressure and solution gas-oil ratio and increase of viscosity and density with depth below the gas-oil contact. The composition of solution gas and of' produced was also was found to vary with elevation of the oil in the reservoir.

This volume contains a summary of the results of past analyses on U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. H0122061 which are relevant to electromagnetic location in mine rescue situations. The analytical results indicated that detection of a trapped miner equipped with a special transmitter is feasible in most situations. Location of the miner by surface measurements is also generally feasible within certain errors. The feasibility of miner detection and the accuracy of miner location have been examined theoretically for a wide variety of situations. Agreement with experimental results is generally good in cases where measurements are available.

The hydrologic characteristics of two abandoned underground coal mine sites, near Latrobe, PA, and Uniontown, PA, were investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for possible implementation of alkaline injection into the mine pools as a means of abating their acid discharges. The Latrobe site was chosen for a one-time application of alkaline injection to achieve a partial, short-term neutralization of a limited portion of the mine pool. A quantity of alkaline reagent (sodium hydroxide) sufficient for a one-time neutralization of the water in this portion of the pool was added. Although nearly all of the neutralizing reagent had moved away from the injection wells within 6 weeks, no evidence of neutralization was noted at the mine discharge during the study period. This lack of neutralization probably occurred because the injection wells did not intercept a primary flow path through the mine. Criteria for successful application of alkaline injection at this or other sites include (1) positive identification of the primary flow paths through the mine pool and (2) addition of quantities of alkaline reagent sufficient to neutralize the entire volume of the pool along the primary flow path.

Continuing interest has been shown in developing processes for extracting nickel and cobalt from low-grade domestic deposits of these metals and in improving existing methods. Of special concern is the nickel-recovery installation at Nicaro, Oriente Province, Cuba, operated for the General Services Administration. The Bureau? of Mines felt that a bibliography would help familiarize personnel at various Bureau of Mines stations and General Services Administration contractors with extraction methods both in the United States and in foreign countries. When this task was under way it became apparent that to compile a complete bibliography would require considerable time, so it was decided to limit the first part to the later literature and issue it independently, thus making it available sooner. The present work supplements the first part and extends the coverage to the earliest years of nickel and cobalt metallurgy.

As part of an effort to establish the extent of the domestic chromium supply that could be exploited in case of adverse changes in international chromium production and trading patterns, a two-part study was conducted for the Bureau of Mines, to assess the domestic availability of critical metals in scrap containing significant amounts of chromium. This report describes the part of the study that deals with wrought stainless steels and heat-resisting alloys. Data were collected on types of scrap, sources, quantities, and ultimate disposition, leading to the conclusion that In 1917 about 62,000 tons of contained chromium was unrecycled. Unrecovered obsolete stainless steel scrap accounts for most of these uncollected chromium values. Error margins in the amount of uncollected scrap are estimated to be 10 to 20 percent.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Com¬mittee of the Coordinating Research Council (CFC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further re¬ports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of l941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. The present report presents analytical data for 3,011 samples, representing the products of 113 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during July and August 1946. As in previous surveys the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 1,585 samples, 311 items, and 99 -brands; premium-price, 1,422 samples, 280 items, and 94 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. Under compuision of the present urgency to implement the President's promise to make the United States the arsenal for the democracies there is a tendency to demand a relaxation of restrictions on hours of labor and to speed up all industrial processes. The pressure is the more insistent with growing realization of the importance of the time factor in the success- ful prosecution of the war effort and the lack of skilled workers due to (2) operation of the draft, lack of an apprentice system in industry, and loss of skill by workers unemployed for long periods during the depression. With "total" war such as it is today the probabilities are that everyone will be required to exert greater effort (in many instances in activities to which they are unaccustomed) for longer periods than ever before has been necessary. The question arises, "What will be the aftereffects as well as the immediate effects on health, safety, and efficiency?" A review of the literature leaves the impression that this question has not been an- swered completely, especially as regards the ultimate effects. Mechanization, speeding up of industrial processes, mass produc- tion, and the small industrial concerns present many problems to indus- trial medicine. Does the tendency to expect the worker to produce at full speed all the time he is on the job decrease the effectiveness of the shorter working hours and cause undue fatigue, loss of efficiency, and increased accident proneness? The answer is important as this condition is likely to be intensified by the exigencies of the present emergency. According to Viteles (1)3, The increased tension under such conditions of work appears to offset the savings in muscular force made pos- sible by the machine. The tension, the speed, the subject- tion to specialization of work and a rhythm uncontrolled by the individual promote fatigue, characterized by a "decrease in the power to work, a decrease in pleasure taken in work, and a decrease in the enjoyment of the hours spent away from work."' The crowding of workers in temporary structures without proper provision for comfort and health may add greatly to the general fatigue factors already present in many industrial establishments. In 1932 Lockhart (2) stated that the production and maintenance of a healthy, satisfied industrial population is the most urgent necessity, involving problems so serious as to constitute a national task too great economically to be relegated to industrial concerns. If this was true in 1932, it must be doubly so today.

A two-dimensional finite element program has been modified and extended to account for some of the rock mechanics complexities associated with single entry development of longwall coal mine panels. Program capability includes arbitrary assignment of element properties without regard to element ordering, anisotropic elastic, plastic and brittle rock properties that may be time dependent (aging), arbitrary mining sequences and provision for the effects of artificial support on the adjacent strata. Failure is according to an extended von Mises criterion that may be linear or quadratic in form; flow rules are obtained from the yield function taken as the plastic potential, but brittle behavior is treated as a discontinuous process of material properties change with deformation. In either case the extent of failure is calculated from the external boundary conditions. Application of the program to essentially two-dimensional problems resulted in lose agreement between calculated displacements and field measurements in the double entry system. Bleeder entries were stable in one locality and not in another. Artificial support had little influence on stability.

"INTRODUCTION Limestone (which consists essentially of calcium carbonate) and dolomite (calcium magnesium carbonate) occur widely in the United States. Their presence is of vast economic importance, because they are used much more extensively than any other form of rock. In 1945, limestone (which, broadly, includes dolomite) was quarried in every State except Delaware, New Hampshire, North Dakota, and Rhode Island, and also in Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Total production (including that used in cement and lime manufacture) exceeded 151,700,000 tons, or 79 percent of the quantity of all kinds of stone sold or used during that year.Important well-known uses of limestone are as concrete aggregate, road material, railroad ballast, for liming the land, for cement manufacture, as riprap for shore protection, harbor work, and spillways at dams, and as building stone.. None of these uses, however, are considered herein. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the industrial and chemical uses that are less widely known and yet are of tremendous importance in a great variety of processing industries. Important examples are dolomite as a refractory furnace lining and limestone as a fluxing agent in blast furnaces, and as a raw material employed in sugar, paper, glass, and alkali manufacture.PRIOR REPORTIn May 1941, the Bureau issued a report 4/ that described these uses in some detail. As new and important developments have taken place during the ensuing years, a revision and representation of the salient features of these uses seem desirable. Asphalt filler and mineral wool uses included in the earlier report are omitted from this paper because they are identified more closely with the highway and building industries, respectively, than with the industrial applications."

Consumption of abrasive materials in the United States decreased 23% in value from that of 1981 to $262 million, of which 53% was manufactured abrasive, 39% was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), and 8% was natural abrasive. Production of natural abrasives, excluding industrial diamond, appeared to be stable when compared with that of 1981. Production of tripoli, a porous siliceous rock, increased slightly after decreasing steadily over the three previous years. The metal and nonmetallic mineral mines (excluding coal mines) of the United States had a more favorable safety record in 1935 than in any year except 1931 and 1932 since annual statistics of accidents first became available in 1911. The accident rate was even lower than that for 1911, when the recorded rate probably did not reflect all of the accidents that actually occurred because many companies had not yet begun to keep complete records of accidents, especially those causing only minor injuries, and when, therefore, the number of accidents revealed by the companies' reports to the Bureau of Mines was probably not as complete as that reported for later years. Compared. with 1911, the accident rate covering fatal and nonfatal injuries in. 1935 decreased 13 percent. Compared with 1925, when the rate was the highest ever reported, the rate for 1935 decreased 47 percent and compared with 1934, 7 percent. The progress in safety which the mines of the country made in 1935 was not confined to any section or mining region; it was shared by a majority of the mining States and applied to underground mining operations, to open-pit mining, and to work at surface shops and yards. The rate for underground mining declined 8 percent from 1934; the rate for open-pit mining declined 14 percent, and that for surface shops and yards 12 percent.

"INTRODUCTION Preliminary examinations of the Mohawk zinc prospect were made by John 14. Price and the author in July, August, and September 1943. Considerable quantities of oxidized lead and zinc minerals were found in old shallow work¬ings along two faults - one an over thrust fault with Paleozoic limestone in the hanging wall overlying Cretaceous shale and arkose in the footwall of the fault, and the other a bedding fault in the Paleozoic limestone.The chances appeared good for finding important lead-zinc sulfide ore bodies at 200 to 300 feet beneath the surface, so exploration in three steps by the Bureau was recommended:Surveying, mapping, and character sampling of the outcrops with topographic and geologic mapping of the immediately surrounding area.Preliminary drilling of four test holes, aggregating about 1,500 feet, to locate the top of a possible sulfide ore zone and determine the thickness and intensity of the sulfide mineralization.Contingent upon favorable results of the second step, diamond drilling of about 6,300 feet of additional hole to explore the sulfide ore bodies.The outcrops were surveyed and sampled, a topographic map was made of the area, and the geology was mapped. A project was set up for preliminary drilling of step 2 in the fiscal year 1944-45. An access road to the drill sites was built in April 1945. Diamond drilling was started on April 28 and completed on September 25, 1945, under the supervision or the Bureau of Mines. The exploratory work is covered in this report."

Sulphuric acid of various concentrations has long been used as a reagent in the determination of olefins and aromatics in hydrocarbon oils4 such as gasoline, kerosene, and neutral oils from coal-tar distillates. Despite its long use, however, there is no general agreement as to optimum conditions and concentration of acid, and numerous methods and modifications have been recommended. In most cases, treatment of the neutral oil with 80 to 90 percent sulphuric acid, followed by distillation to the original endpoint to remove olefin polymers, is recommended for the estimation of unsaturated hydrocarbons. The distillate thus obtained is taken as olefin-free oil and used in later stages of the anlysis. Aromatic hydrocarbons generally are determined in the olefin-free oil by suphonation with more concentrated acid (96 to 100 percent and fuming sulphuric acid are recommended), the hydrocarbons not attacked and removed as water-soluble sulphoric acids being considered as saturated hydrocarbons. In some cases the saturates are examined further by differentiating between cyclic (naphthenes) and acyclic hydrocarbons (paraffins), Generally this is achieved by physical methods, although strong sulphuric acid is known to react preferentially with some types of saturated hydrocarbons. It was the purpose of the present work to make a general study of this type of analysis and to investigate the reactions of hydrocarbons under conditions often used in analyses that employ sulphuric acid reagents. Since previous work is not in good agreement, the optimum concentrations of acid for the different stages of the analysis were determined. Several sulphuric acid methods previously recommended and new modifications were compared, two synthetic solutions being used as the reference oil. The results obtained are presented below under separate headings.
