In 2006, a total of 280 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.9% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.8% (n=131) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were copper ore (n=34; 12.1%), and iron ore (n=33; 11.8%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=53; 18.9%), followed by Alaska (n=31; 11.1%).

Research personnel from the Bureau of Mines, representatives of the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA), and members of the mining industry met with other Government and Industry representatives at three seminars held in Pittsburgh, Pa., November 4, 1975; St. Louis, Mo., November 6, 1975; and Denver, Colo., November L1, 1975, to discuss the results of Bureau-sponsored research on coal mine illumination. The program, aimed at developing suitable illumination systems fur the working; places of underground coal mines, covered hardware development and field evaluation and the status of proposed MESA standards and proposed MESA enforcement procedures. These proceedings contain the opening remarks to the seminars and eight technical presentations an various aspects of coal mine illumination.

Because of concern over the availability and reliability of an uninterrupted supply of manganese and other materials, the U.S. Congress requested that the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) study the /low of strategic and critical materials in the economy to delineate and quantify the production areas where metal values are lost. As a result, the USBM developed a generic computerized commodity flow model that is readily amenable to updating. The original model developed for cobalt, with slight modifications, was used to track the flow of manganese. This report follows the flow of manganese through its metallurgical and chemical applications and highlights areas where significant losses occur owing to downgrading, export, or disposal. The study indicates that materials containing 695,000 short tons (st) of manganese were consumed domestically in 1990. Scrap recovery specifically for manganese recycling was insignificant. However, considerable manganese was recycled through processing operations as a minor component of ferrous and nonferrous scrap and steel slag. The major loss category is manganese lost in steel processing, 323,156 st or 46 pet of the 1990 apparent consumption. Most of this loss reports to steelmaking slags. Recovery from slags is technically feasible, but is not economically feasible.

The Department of the Interior has recently investigated the atmospheric conditions in tunnels of the Union Pacific Railroad in Utah and Wyoming , by observations made from the cabs of freight locomotives . This work was conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the request of , and in cooperation with , the Union Pacific Railroad Co .. and was brought about by several accidents to members of engine crews while passing through tunnels , from pollution of the tunnel air by exhaust gases from freight locomotives . The object was to determine the cause of gassing accidents , by examining into composition of the air in locomotive cabs while passing through railroad turmels ; to learn the effect of these conditions on the engine crew; and to provide a means of protection for the men so exposed . Gas samples and temperature readings taken in the cabs of locomotives were used in studying the atmospheric conditions to which the locomotive crews were exposed . The symptoms and the physiologica effects produced in men exposed to the atmospheres encountered were studied . The pulse rates and body temperatures were taken , and the determinations of the carbon monoxide content of the blood were made . Various methods for the prevention of gassing and for the protection of men therefrom were considered and tested , among which were the use of mechanical devices for deflecting the smoke away from the engine cab, and the use of various types of gas masks and breathing apparatus . While this investigation is a part of the safety work of the Bureau of Mines in connection with hazards from atmospheres containing carbon monoxide ( CO ) , the results are of particular value to railroads operating steam locomotives through tunnels , and are also valuable to other industries where atmospheres having poisonous gases or of a high temperature and humidity may be present . Mineral resource studies by the Bureau of Mines indicate three areas within the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness have mineral resource potential. Regional studies suggest that a granitic stock on the south side of the Wilderness has high potential for a Climax-type stockwork molybdenum deposit (pl. 1, no. 8); but detailed surface investigations failed to recognize a deposit. The Elk Summit area on the north side of the Wilderness contains subeconomic resources of columbium (niobium)-bearing ilmenite in placers (p1. 1, no. 19). Subeconomic silver-copper-lead resources occur in a vein on the northeast side of the Wilderness at the Clift Mine (pl. 1, no. 2-5). The study area has no known deposits of oil and Haas, coal, geothermal resources, or other energy-related commodities.

"INTRODUCTION As a part of the wartime activities of the Bureau of Mines, metallurgical services were extended to other Government agncies engaged in purchasing and stock-piling some of the more critical and strategic materials. At the request of Dr. Alan M. Bateman, special representative of the Metals Reserve Company, metallurgical studies were made on three samples of oxide tin ore from, the States of Zacatecas and Guanajuato, Mexico. The samples were submitted for testing by A. Porraz of the Financiera Miners, S. A., institution Financiera, Edificio Guardiola, Despachos 500-507, Mexico, D. F.The samples as received were marked Nos. 1, 2, and 3 and described as follows:Sample 1. - Origin: Mining camp ""El Naranjo,"" municipality of Sombrerete, State of Zacatecas, Mexico. This sample was partly concentrated by washing and as received was all minus 10-mesh in size.Sample 2. - Origin: Deposits in Sierra. Fria and Juan Cherey, municipality, of Jerez,State of Zacatecas, Mexico. This sample represented run of-mine ore.Sample 3. - Origin: Mine ""La Frontere, "" Ranch of San Pedro del loya, State of Guanajuato, Mexico. This run-of-mine sample was low in tin content but came from a highly mineralized tin field."

Starting on a small scale, the equipment for processing synthesis gas to form liquid hydrocarbons was expanded to handle 100 m) 3/hr. This reactor was successfully designed and constructed, and a basis for future design methods was established. Because, however, this work was carried out on an empirical basis, it is felt that a more thorough theoretical study should be made in an effort to increase the efficiency of the process, particularly in the development of a simpler converter.

The material that composes the roof in coal mines differs in strength according to variations in its physical nature and characteristics. Some material such as limestone and massive sandstone, (free from slits) and carbonaceous shale or bone, will often remain in place in narrow work without the use of timber or other means of support, but in wide places the use of supports becomes a real necessity. Roof material composed of shale, fire clay or small laminations of sandstone, or shale or sandstone interspersed with laminations of thin coal, presents conditions that call for timber support in both narrow and wide work. However, in narrow work such unstable roof material may be taken down until the strata assume an arch that is self-supporting for overlying firm strata such as a roof coal, a touch weather-resisting, shale, sandstone, or limestone. The proper support of the roof in roadways used for haulage or travel adds to the economy of operation by preventing delays in transportation and increases the safety of those who travel these roadways.

This work was done to provide thermodynamic, electrical, physical, and compositional data on the seeded combustion plasmas of seven coals for the design of MHD generators. The systems were assumed to be at equilibrium, and the design data were generated by solving for the composition of both gas and liquid phases with a digital computer. The coals reported in this study include a western subbituminous, a Pennsylvania anthracite, and five representative bituminous coals. The data include dewpoint temperatures of both slag and seed. A Mollier diagram for each coal is given to allow graphical generator calculations.

A table that greatly simplifies determination of metastable transitions in mass spectra has been prepared. All the mathematically possible metastable transitions of any compound whose molecular weight lies between 26 and 150 can be determined from the table without calculation. The method of utilizing the table is described, using selected peaks from the spectrum of normal butane for illustration. In the mass spectrometer, ions are formed in the isatron and accelerated through a series of slits. Most of these ions reach the collector without further change, but a few dissociate in transit to form new ions. These ions appear in the mass spectrum at neither the mass--to-charge ratio (m/e) of the original ion nor that of the new ion. "IntroductionRecognition of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) as a major occupational disease has affected various aspects of the coal mining industry in the United States as well as in almost all major coal producing countries, Regulations related to the control of coal mine dust forced mine operators to modify their mining and ventilation practices. As the coal production record of the last 15 years shows, this had both direct and indirect impacts on the productivity and production costs.To identify the causes of CWP, many research efforts have been made throughout the world. Most of these studies were epidemiological in nature, attempting to pinpoint exposure and seam variables that affected the incidence of the disease. Other studies have been oriented toward the elemental and mineralogical composition of the coal dust in the mine atmosphere and in the miners' lungs. These studies indicate that there may exist some relationships between the characteristics of the coal mine dust and the prevalence of the disease. Some of the variables that are thought to affect the occurrence of CWP are the mass of the dust in the working place, the rank of the coal, the existence of certain trace elements, the free silica content of the coal, and the existence of other minerals in the respirable dust. A more complete description of these previous research studies has appeared elsewhere (Mutmansky and Lee, 1984).The behavior of particles in the human lung is known to be governed by their aerodynamic diameter, which is defined as the diameter of a hypothetical spherical particle with unit density that exhibits the same settling velocity as the given particle. Because of this fact, the aerodynamic size distribution of coal mine dust is one of the parameters to be determined along with the other physical, elemental, and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this paper is to establish a strategy for providing coal mine respirable dust samples for characterization purposes using instruments that classify according to the aerodynamic diameter. In addition, several findings concerning characterization methods will be presented"

When the Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines within the Department of the Interior, the Bureau's programs involved only health and safety research and education, and fuels testing. As the Federal Government's primary agency for research in minerals, the Bureau has expanded its scientific and technological investigations to mining, processing mineral substances, eliminating occupational health and safety hazards in the mineral industries, economic development, and resource conservation. Today, Bureau activities cover a broad spectrum of programs for meeting the diverse (and sometimes conflicting) needs of mineral industries, government, and the public. In the 1960's, the Bureau initiated programs to resolve environmental problems associated with past mining and mineral processing. Dependence on foreign sources of raw materials critical to our national economy and competition from other countries for these world supplies stimulated the need to conserve and use with intelligence the Nation's minerals, metals, and materials.

During the period 1979 thru 1982, Multi Mineral Corporation conducted a mining research program at the United States Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Facility in the Central Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and the results are described in this report.

Late in 1974 at a meeting with the Cedar Coal Company in Chelyan, West Virginia, a very definite requirement for an automatic heat sensing fire suppression system for the type coal augers used in their mine was revealed. Several fires had been experienced, and while equipment loss was a consideration, operator safety was also a concern. As of that date no one had developed an automatic system specifically for fire suppression on coal augers. II. EQUIPMENT DEVELOPMENT As a result of the above meeting, an unsolicited proposal was made to the Bureau on March 1, 1975, and a contract was issued to provide the following services: A. Determine and define fire hazard problem on Compton Coal Auger. B. Modify or otherwise mike a Lease "AFEX" system suitable for protecting the fire hazard area developed in paragraph "A". C. Make installation of "AFEX" system. D. Monitor installation for reliability for a period of 90 days after installation. C. ConJurt a simulated fire test to determine effectiveness on system.

Rock property tests were performed on NX-size diamond drill core from the roof, floor, and coal from the longwall mining section of Federal No. 2 mine, West Virginia. The purpose of these tests was to determine the engineering properties of the various strata as part of a ground control study of the longwall operation. The following tests were performed: 1. Uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio 2. Triaxial compressive strength 3. Brazilian tensile strength 4. Modulus of rupture 5. A mineral survey of a portion of the Lake Eleanor RARE II area (No. 5807), Trinity County, California, was done by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Approximately 8,650 acres (3,500 ha) of the Lake Eleanor RARE II area not examined for this report had been previously investigated by U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey personnel and published as part of USGS Bulletin 1371-B, (Hotz, 1972) Mineral Resources of the Salmon-Trinity Alps Primitive Area, California. The report showed that the section included in the rake Eleanor RARE II area contained no metallic mineral resources. Geochemical sampling indicated that the Lake Eleanor RARE II area contains no potentially important mineral resources. About 4,650 acres (1,880 ha) of the eastern part of Lake Eleanor RARE II area were examined for this report. The Bureau of Mines was responsible for detailed examination and sampling of mines, prospects, and mineralized zones; the Geological Survey conducted geological, geochemical, and geophysical studies of the area. This area is underlain mainly by granitic rock and serpentinite.

"INTRODUCTION Although many investigators have provided information on the strength and other properties of concrete the published literature cites few data on the effect of mixing cement with acid mine waters or on acid resistance of concrete in contact with mine waters. Most of the reported work on the effect of impure waters has dealt with the resistance of cement specimens to ""sulfate waters,"" that is, waters or soils with a relatively high sodium sulfate content. The ""Merriman test"" is used commonly to determine the corrosion resistance of cements for 28 days, but it does not seem certain that a cement having a high sulfate resistance in the Merriman or similar tests necessarily will show correspondingly great resistance to the sulfates of iron and, particularly, to sulfuric acid, which usually are present in acid mine waters. Extensive use of cement mortar for laying up masonry stoppings in coal and other mines and for constructing concrete mine haulageways and shaft linings, coal-storage and other retaining walls, highway bridges, culverts, and many other types of construction where it is difficult to obtain fresh water for mixing or where the structures are later exposed to contact with acid waters makes it important to know the effect of these conditions on cement and whether there is a cement better suited for such work than ordinary portland cement.CONDUCT OF THE INVESTIGATIONFor a short time early in 1935 the opportunity to obtain at least some additional information on the effect of acid mine water on cements was presented by the Relief Works Division, which provided money for irregular and indefinite employment for several months. Purchase of apparatus or material was not permitted under this arrangement, and indefinite duration of the work, intermittent employment, and finally complete cessation of the work prevented planning for extensive investigation of this particular problem."

This report also includes (A) an estimate of the cost of construction, (B) a description covering the use of the equipment, and (C) a proposed test plan to demonstrate performance of the equipment in both the laboratory and a mine.

Study Design. Survival analysis techniques were used to compare the fatigue failure responses of elderly motion segments to a middle-aged sample. Objectives. To compare fatigue life of a middle-aged sample of lumbosacral motion segments to a previously tested elderly cohort. An additional objective was to evaluate the influence of bone mineral content on cycles to failure. Summary of Background Data. A previous investiga¬tion evaluated fatigue failure responses of 36 elderly lumbosacral motion segments (average age, 81 ± 8 years) subjected to spinal loads estimated when lifting a 9-kg load in 3 torso flexion angles (0°, 22.5°, and 45°). Results demonstrated rapid fatigue failure with increased torso flexion; however, a key limitation of this study was the old age of the specimens. Methods. Each lumbosacral spine was dissected into 3 motion segments (L1-L2, L3-L4, and L5-S1). Motion segments within each spine were randomly assigned to a spinal loading condition corresponding to lifting 9 kg in 3 torso flexion angles (0°, 22.5°, or 45°). Motion segments were statically loaded and allowed to creep for 15 minutes, then cyclically loaded at 0.33 Hz. Fatigue life was taken as the number of cycles to failure (10 mm displacement after creep loading). Results. Compared with the older sample of spines, the middle-aged sample exhibited increased fatigue life (cycles to failure) in all the torso flexion conditions. Increased fatigue life of the middle-aged specimens was associated with the increased bone mineral content (BMC) in younger motion segments (mean ± SD, 30.7 11.1 g per motion segment vs. 27.8 ± 9.4 g). Increasing bone mineral content had a protective influence with each additional gram increasing survival times by approximately 12%. Conclusion. Younger motion segments survive considerably longer when exposed to similar spine loading conditions that simulate repetitive lifting in neutral and flexed torso postures, primarily associated with the increased bone mineral content possessed by younger motion segments. Cycles to failure of young specimens at 22.5° flexion were similar to that of older specimens at 0° flexion, and survivorship of young specimens at 45° flexion was similar to the older cohort at 22.5°. Low back disorders (LBDs) are a major cause of both short- and long-term occupational disability in the United States, and it is clear that workers in certain occupations are more susceptible to LBD.2-5 Specifically, epidemiologic studies have shown that jobs involving heavy physical demands such as construction,2,3 mining,2,4 and farming,5 engender increased risk of back pain. These occupations are thought to experience high LBD rates as a result of their extreme postural and manual lifting demands. Studies have shown that jobs involving significant lifting 6-9 and jobs that involve frequent bending10-12 are associated with increased LBD risk. Workers in the mining industry, in particular, often have to lift heavy materials in restricted workspaces that compel torso flexion. An understanding of the impact of repeated loading of the spine in flexion on fatigue failure of spinal tissues is thus a critical issue for our research agency, which is concerned with reducing the pain and disability associated with LBD in the mining industry. It is well accepted that loads experienced by the spine during manual lifting tasks are sufficient to cause fractures in the endplates of lumbar vertebrae, particularly on repeated loading. 13-15 Endplate fractures may not be painful in and of themselves 16; however, evidence suggests that the process of internal disc disruption and disc degeneration may be initiated via endplate fractures. 16,17 It has been shown that endplate damage will alter the distribution of stress in the disc, resulting in buckling of the lamellas of the internal anulus.17 Once this process has been initiated, repeated spine loading will cause additional disruption of the anular fibers, resulting in formation of significant fissures or tears. 11-21 If these tears occur near or extend close to the outer portions of the anulus, a wound healing process is initiated, which involves infiltration of mast cells, macrophages, and re¬lease of cytokines and growth factors. 21 The presence of these infiltrates has been strongly linked to discogenic low back pain. 21,22 Indeed, for patients experiencing chronic low back pain, the prevalence of internal disc disruption is at least 39%,19 which represents the most

As low-temperature heat-capacity and entropy data were available for only one sesquisulfide (cerium sesquisulfide), it appeared desirable to augment the information for this class of compounds by measuring the sulfides of antimony and indium. In addition a pressing need existed for data on indium sulfide to supplement vaporization studies in progress in the Department of Mineral Technology, University of California. This Bureau of Mines paper reports low-temperature heat-capacity measurements and entropy evaluations at 298.15° R. of antimony sesquisulfide of stoiehiometric composition (Sb2S3) and of indium sesquisulfide which was somewhat deficient in sulfur (In2S2.93). The data for the latter substance were adjusted to correspond to the stoichiome tric composition (In2S3 ) . Indium sesquisulfide has a lower entropy at 298.15' K, than either antimony sesquisulfide or cerium sesquisulfide, in line with the higher atomic density of the indium compound.
