A technical and economic evaluation of the potential for improving mining productivity through the use of underreamers in blastholes, specifically in relation to Minnesota taconite, Arizona surface copper and in situ mining operations is presented. Included are (1) a review of the drilling and blasting practices presently being used, (2) a discussion of current underreamer technology. (3) the presentation of a general economic cost model for underreaming, (4) the application of the model to surface taconite, surface copper and in situ mining, and (5) a summary discussion including required performance specifications, potential overall benefits, and recommendations for further development.

Ethical concerns of in-vivo procedures and poor repeatability of non-invasive techniques have been major limitations in estimating vibration-induced spine loads through experiments. The biodynamic models of seated human body exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV) have evolved for defining the frequency-weightings, enhancement of human responses to WBV, and developing anthropodynamic manikins for seating assessment activities. The widely reported mechanical-equivalent models, solely based on through- or to-the-body biodynamic response functions, do not seem to resemble the biomechanical structure and do not yield information on the dynamic loading and deflections of segments of concern, namely the spine. On the other hand, biomechanical models with representative anatomical structure and anthropometry are being attempted to simulate segmental movements and the coupling effects, using Finite elements (FE) or multi-body dynamics (MBD) formalisms, which could provide important insights into the inter-vertebral forces [1]. While the FE models pose considerable complexities primarily related to characteristics of the bio-material properties, the MBD technique with discrete rigid bodies offers the flexibility to create multi-segment models with relative ease and lower computational cost. In this study, a preliminary multibody dynamic model of a seated human body exposed to WBV along the vertical direction is formulated using MSC/ADAMS software. The model validity is demonstrated by comparing selected responses with the available measured data. Methods The seated human is represented by nine rigid body segments, including: head, neck, thoracic and lumbar torso, pelvis, hands and thighs, as shown in Fig. 1. The rigid bodies are coupled through different rotational and translational joints, some of which are force elements to allow vertical translations and sagittal–plane rotations of the segments. The measurements of transmission of vertical vibration through-the-body generally require subjects to voluntarily maintain a vertical head position to reduce head-accelerometer orientation errors. The head–neck–shoulder joint is thus considered to be rigid. The shoulders are assumed to be rigidly attached to the thoracic segment. The torso is made up of three (upper, middle and lower) segments connected by visco-elastic revolute and translational joints to permit relative pitch and vertical motions. The forces and torques generated by the joints are derived assuming linear stiffness and damping properties, which were identified from published studies. The pelvis is connected to the rigid seat by similar elements representing the visco-elastic properties of the buttock tissues. The two thighs are rigidly connected to the pelvis, while the segment masses are chosen from the anthropometric data for the 50th percentile male subject. During the initial portion of the contract several alternative designs were considered, as set out step by step in the monthly reports. The conclusions reached during this period were - to use on INTERDATA Model 70 as the system minicomputer - to drop the idea of multiplexing and digitizing the inclinometer outputs downhole due to the greater complexity and cost that that alternative would imply - to use a multitasking software monitor to enable synchronization of the several tasks that the system would have to perform simultaneously - to use a common controller for all I/0 devices except those which were available off the shelf from Interdata - to use a sheave counter to meter off equal increments of probe travel, but to supplement this information with the use of an encoder on the winch drum in order to be able to measure total probe travel unambiguously. - to place all I10 device interfaces in a bin connected to the common controller. During this period considerable attention was dedicated to the design of the mechanical components contemplated it the original contract. Of these, only those required for vertical probe was complete at the time that it was decided to forego the mechanical subsystem and concentrate on developing the necessary electronics and software to interface with the probes being developed by the Bureau of Mines.

In 1989, Alabama's nonfuel mineral industry produced a State record of $463 million of nonfuel mineral commodities, an increase of $4 million over that reported by the State's mineral producers in 1988. The new record marked the fourth consecutive year in which mineral production increased over that of the previous year. Alabama ranked 22d among the States in total mineral value. Cement, stone, and sand and gravel were the three leading mineral commodities produced, accounting for 77% of Alabama's total mineral value. During the year, there were several acquisitions by Alabama cement and stone companies, and the only tantalum mine in the United States completed its first full year of operation.

Knowledge of risks from exposure to hand-arm vibrations is usually presented by clinicians and researchers from a medical and engineering point of view. There is a strong need to develop innovative health promotion programs for exposed workers. Risk perceptions by vibration exposed workers and HAVS (hand-arm vibration syndrome) affected workers are less well known. In 1983, Brubaker demonstrated that 75% of studied fellers thought that whitening of the fingers was part of the job and/or an unrelated nuisance, while only 25% believed it was a disease. 1Grounds also showed that even though there were a very high number of forestry workers with white fingers, none considered quitting because of their condition. 2 It seems that many workers hesitate to declare the illness or believe they are less affected than they really are, perhaps from fear of losing their jobs and livelihood. 3 Risk awareness, on the part of exposed workers and their employers, as well as knowledge and acceptance of available preventive solutions are necessary steps before installing adequate preventive measures, whether organizational, behavioral or environmental. Workers need to understand fully the hazards and risks in order to be able to make informed decisions under uncertain conditions.4 Prerequisites include the following: workers knowledge about the risk, their attitude towards it, which in turn, can be influenced by values, needs and interests. Also, knowledge and attitudes towards safety behaviour, organizational or environmental barriers must be taken into account. Our research focuses on these key elements, which help bridge the gap between health promotion research and practice. Methods A descriptive exploratory study is in progress with workers exposed to hand-arm vibrations. It uses qualitative methods that include focus group discussions with workers exposed to hand-arm vibrations, as well as individual interviews with other key informants (employers, health care professionals). An open-ended questionnaire was developed to collect qualitative data on perceived risks and solutions to prevent or reduce HAVS. Based on an integrated theoretical framework related to known determinants of behavior change, the analysis will focus on the following5: 1) knowledge of health effects, safety, well-being and/or quality of life 2) related beliefs about individual susceptibility and severity of consequences 3) attitude and values related to hand-arm vibration exposure 4) knowledge and attitudes towards exposure reduction, as well as perceptions of barriers and facilitating factors for these measures, in the workplace environment or otherwise.

The behavior of wire ropes used in hoisting is not well understood. In an effort to improve this understanding, the structure of round-strand wire ropes was analyzed. This report provides a generalized mathematical model that completely describes the geometry of the wires. It consists of two sets of vector equations and is valid for any round-strand wire rope. One set of equations is used to trace the paths of wires that have the form of a single helix; the other is used for the paths of double helical wires. The specific model for a 33-mm 6×19 Seale, independent wire rope core (IWRC), right regular lay wire rope was presented as an example. The paths and the geometric properties of the wires, which include the path length per lay of strand, the curvature, and the torsion, were determined from this model. The effects of strain deformation were analyzed, resulting in a system of equations for determining the structural parameters of the deformed rope. In future work, the model could be used to analyze wire ropes of different constructions so that a more scientifically based understanding of rope behavior can be established.

Certain roof shales in coal mines deteriorate upon exposure to the atmosphere, causing difficulties in the mining operations and adding to the cost. This report presents the results of both field investigations, in a West Virginia mine, and laboratory studies on the effects of atmospheric moisture on roof shales. Based on these observations a conceptual procedure is presented on how shale deterioration might be predicted during exploration, and guidelines are given as to how air tempering or conditioning chambers may be designed to reduce moisture effects. Recommendations for further studies are included. An annotated bibliography of the literature constitutes the second volume.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies to investigate methods for desilicating sodium aluminate solution derived from leaching a limestone-anorthosite sinter with 10-pct Na2C03 solution. Desilication tests were made at atmospheric pressure to determine the effects of time and additions of lime and desilication residues. A two-stage, countercurrent desilication procedure was developed to reduce the Si02 content sufficiently to meet specifications for cell-grade A1203. Both stages were conducted at boiling temperatures at atmospheric pressure. Reagent lime was charged as desilication seed to the partially desilicated solution in the second stage, and a product (desilication residue) precipitated by the lime addition was charged to the freshly leached solution in the first stage. Average A1203 loss in the desilication circuit was 5.8 pct, and the product solution contained less than 0.04 g/l Si02. Complete precipitation of A1203 by carbonation resulted in a hydrate containing less than 0.01 pct Si02. Calcination of this hydrate would produce A1203 meeting the 0.015 pct Si02 specification for cell-grade material.

This work, conducted under Bureau of Mines contract, deals with the development of a computer graphics software package that will: 1. display mine ventilation schematics and other representative Illustrations for a real-time data acquisition system under development by the Bureau, and, 2. utilize the Bureau-owned Minefire and Ventilation Code for display of ventilation on and contamination predictions. The software package has been written try operate on a 64K, Z-80 based microprocessor-computer. The project has been divided into two phases. The first phase dealt with the development of the graphics software The sec rind phase dealt with the retrofit of the Minefire and Ventilation Code to the Z-80 microprocessor-computer.

In the course of the Bureau of Mines investigations for suitable sources of high-aluminum clay for the production of alumina, the Whiteware clay deposit was examined in August 1942 by G.N. Bennett, mining engineer, Bureau of Mines, Montana District Office. This report presents the factual data obtained by the investigation, which also includes data on trenching and drilling, and the results of some refractory tests and chemical analyses of representative samples of the clay later taken from some of the best trench exposures and from adit dumps.

Public awareness of, and involvement in, recycling has increased significantly in recent years. Nevertheless, recycling is generally perceived as a new development, and is familiar only in the context of municipal solid waste management. The actual magnitude and scope of metals recycling in the United States have gone virtually unnoticed. Over time, both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of secondary metals recovery and reuse have changed substantially, while the attendant regulations have become increasingly stringent. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report examines trends and developments in major metal demand and recycling, and analyzes the possible impacts of regulations with regard to recycling activities.

The objective of this study was two-fold: 1. To perform a world literature search pertinent to the analysis, selection and design of hoisting systems and their components and to codify the search into a literature compendium. The search resulted in a technical data file of over 1500 hard copy items. The compendium index was also suitable for establishing a comprehensive computer-loaded data base on the subject. 2. To develop a comprehensive system of guidelines to cover salient aspects of analysis, selection and design of electrical, mechanical and structural components of a hoisting system with a view to establish parameters for maximum safety and efficiency of operation, installation and revision of the system. 3. Major mechanical components in the hoist and mechanical drive train are considered. Design and specification criteria based on American standards and practices are developed as they apply to typical mine hoist arrangements.

This publication presents a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines of 494 accidents in open-pit iron-ore mines, beneficiation plants, and shops of the Lake Superior district from March 1949 to June 1956. These accidents caused 499 lost-time injuries, including 12 fatalities. A similar Bureau publication, Information Circular 7744, Analysis of 346 Accidents, Underground Iron-Ore Mines, Lake Superior District, was published in April 1956. Accident reports were analyzed by the Bureau to show the causes of in-juries and the unsafe practices or conditions that caused the accidents. Also shown are the time charges, times of occurrence, ages of the injured by job classification, and experience of the injured in mines and on the job being performed when hurt. Detailed information is presented on approximately 27 percent of the total number of disabling accidents that occurred in open-pit iron-ore mines, beneficiation plants, and shops in the district during the period covered. The text also contains tabulations of the accident experience and graphs with straight-line injury-frequency, injury-severity, and fatality trends for the period 1946-57.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on many topics relating to the mineral resources of the United States. This is done to ensure an adequate supply of minerals essential to a viable domestic industry and a sound economy. The United States is almost totally dependent on foreign supplies for a number of minerals such as chromium, niobium, tantalum, and manganese for which there is no available substitute, while many other minerals such as titanium are abundantly distributed throughout the earth but seldom occur in adequate concentrations or useful forms. This report describes an example of a small but high-grade occurrence of titanium are in Nelson County, VA. This occurrence could be exploited under favorable economic conditions with new mining technology such as borehole slurry mining. The report demonstrates that the dikes at titanium ore, a mixture of ilmenite and apatite locally termed nelsonite, can be detected and traced along strike using magnetometer traverses. This information will aid in the selection of appropriate slurry borehole mining test sites in the area.

The physical properties and related geological and petrographic data for 81 rock types obtained from operating mines or selected test sites are presented in this report. Most of these rock data were obtained to supplement structural studies in underground mines; however, the data may be equally applicable to other problems where the physical properties of rock are an important factor. Stress-strain curves are presented, where available, and free medium velocities from laboratory and field measurements are compared for several rock types. Rock-type, geographical, and geo-logical indexes are included for reference relative to physical property data in this and previously published Bureau of Mines physical property reports. INTRODUCTION This report presents the physical properties of 81 rock types from 16 different projects (sections 53-68). Three previous physical property reports2 3 4/ (herein after referred to as parts I, II, and III) presented data on 244 rock types from 52 project areas. (Part I included sections 1-25, part II sections 26-36, and part III sections 37-52).

The Bureau of Mines has developed prototype instruments promising to improve the ability to warn of imminent roof falls. An unusually good opportunity to test these comparatively under natural caving conditions was afforded by the forecasted caving in August 1977 of a mined-out region of the White Pine Mine. The latter's rock strata closely resemble those in many coal mines. The anticipated cave was of the competent-roof/weak-pillar type. It occurred as, and when, predicted. Automated convergence and bed separation gages agreed well with the standard manual convergence gage measurements. A micro seismic gage was found to be insensitive to the fall and may require different test conditions for effectiveness. A roof resistivity unit was tested under a separate Bureau of Mines contract. (No. H02720J7). An unplanned addition showed interesting potential.

Under this program two tape recording and triggering systems were developed and delivered for use in the Bureau of Mines microseismic program. The systems are designed to improve the effectiveness of the Bureau owned Sangamo 3500 series and SABRE VI instrumentation tape recorders. The system is designed to capture random microseismic data, digitize and temporarily store these data, start the tape recorder; and then transfer the data to magnetic tape for permanent storage. The system is designed to pack data on tape such that the tape may be simply played back through galvo drivers onto an oscillograph such that a continuous series of analog records, with corresponding time of day information, are reproduced without excessive oscillograph paper waste or the need for the operator to search for valid events.
