"The following report is submitted, in compliance with the request made by the Honorable W. H. Sproule, Chairman of the Committee on Mines and Mining, to the Director of the United States Bureau of Mines, that the bureau investigate the most modern processes for the production of radium from its ores. A thorough search of technical publications and patent office files was made. Outstanding authorities on the subject as well as persons claiming novel or secret methods were interviewed.Unlike most other elements, it is not possible for radium to occur naturally in a pure or concentrated form. This is because radium is one of a series of unstable elements which, by a constant, spontaneous, atomic disintegration, change from one element to the next in the series. Uranium is the ""grandparent"" of radium. The rates at which radium atoms are ""born"" and ""die"" are so related that only one part of radium can exist in equilibrium with three million parts of uranium. Consequently radium is only found associated with uranium minerals, and the ratio of radium to uranium is never more than one to three million. Since uranium is a rather rare element, the scarcity of radium is almost beyond comprehension. Nevertheless minute traces of radium can be detected in nearly all rocks.The carnotite ores of Colorado and Utah were the chief source of radium for many years.In the fall of 1922 news of the very rich deposits of radium ore discovered in the Belgian Congo caused most complete cessation of domestic production. The Congo ore contains pitchblende and a number of alteration products, including the new minerals bequerelite, curite, krasolite, stasite, and dewindite. Reports indicate that a considerable amount of ore containing over 50 per cent uranium oxide has been produced. It seemed certain that radium could be extracted from the Conga ore at a much lower cost than from the relatively low-grade carnotite; and in order to preserve their elaborate marketing organizations, the larger American producers made agreements with the Belgian syndicate to market the foreign product in this country. The retail price of radium has been held at $70 per milligram, but large orders are filled as low as $50. Extraction of radium from carnotite by the usual methods does not appear to be profitable at that price with one exception, all American firms ceased production after their accumulated stocks of ore had been treated. The United States Radium Co., which continued to treat carnotite for several years, finally shut down its plant."

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1979, 12 companies operated 32 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 64% of production. Washington, Oregon and Montana accounted for 32% of the total production; Gulf Coast States 20%; other Northern States 32%; and other Southern States 16%. Based on published producer prices output of primary metal in 1979 was valued at over $6 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Of aluminum consuming industries in 1979, building accounted for about 24%; packaging 23%; transportation 22%; electrical 11%; consumer durables 8%; and other uses, 12%.

A mathematical model was developed to assess the costs for reclamation of surface mining using the shovel overcasting operation, the front end loader operation, and a backfilling operation. A literature review was made of the present laws in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia pertaining to surface mining and of the various parameters that influence the input data for a mathematical model. It was determined that the working mathematical model would have to be applied on an area to area basis, preferably on a permit by permit basis in the area where surface mining was being done. To this end, a flexible model was developed with input data obtained from the area of study. The results of the study show that the cost per ton of coal for reclamation can be estimated for various reclamation levels. Validation of the model was done for selected permits from Virginia. It was determined that the permits could easily be used for input data to the model.

To help reduce the Nation's dependence on imported chromite, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the use of dolomites as an alternate material. Dolomite is a plentiful domestic resource and offers certain advantages as a refractory raw material. A review of the literature has indicated that there are many sources of high-purity dolomite in this country and that European nations use a greater proportion of dolomite refractories, primarily in steelmaking, than the United States, The Bureau of Mines characterized 14 domestic dolomites as to chemistry, density, mineralogy, microstructure, and thermal behavior, to develop baseline data on their suitability as refractory raw materials.

This paper has been abstracted from a forthcoming Bureau of Mines bulletin on the concentration of copper ores in North America. GENERAL DEVELOPMENTS IN CONCENTRATING COPPER ORES FROM 1912 TO 1932 During the east 20 years the milling of copper ores as practiced in the larger concentrators has chanced to such an extent that comparatively few of the machines in use at the beginning of this period remain in service today. Concentrating Practice in 1912. In 1912 the usual equipment for concentrating copper ores comprised jigs for the coarser sizes, tables and sand vanners for the intermediate sizes, and vanners for the finer crushed and ground material. Rolls operated in series under graded crushing conditions, were in common use for the liberation of the copper minerals; grinding by Chilean or Muntington mills ordinarily was confined to the coarser tailings of jigs and tables.

Ore and concentrate are transported on, the surface at western mining districts by (1) railroads, (2) surface trams, (3) aerial trams, (4) trucks, and (5) wagons, and (6) on the backs of animals. The daily and ultimate tonnage to be moved is the principal factor governing the selection of the method of transportation. Railroads are preferred when large tonnages are to be hauled over relatively long distances. The mine-haulage system may be extended or surface trams built to the mill or shipping point if a practical track grade is possible and if the distance is relatively short. Aerial trams have a special field of usefulness for transportation over steep or excessively rough terrain.

In this two-year study, an evaluation of mining and reclamation practices at 159 randomly sampled surface coal mines in the United States was conducted. It is concluded that reclamation practices in most of the 22 coal-producing states were adequate during 1975, but that improvement in reclamation performance was desirable in the acid area of the central U. S. and in mountainous southwestern Virginia. Productivity improvements should result from research to determine efficient or optimal operating procedures for dragline stripping of single and multiple seams, surface mining of lignite, multicut and multiseam haulback mining on steep slopes, mountaintop removal, and surface mining in swampy or deeply glaciated areas. Specific candidate research projects are discussed in this report.

Sponge iron is a product resulting from the reduction of an iron oxide below the temperature at which the product melts. Commercial grades usually contain 80 to 95 percent metallic iron, 2 to 5 percent unreduced iron oxide, and an amount of siliceous gangue material depending on the pur.ity of the are used for reduction. The reducing agent may be gaseous or solid, and a large variety of procedures have been proposed for bringing the reducing agent into reaction with the iron oxide. Of the proposed procedures, the one that has the distinction of having been in continuous commercial operation for the longest time, from 1911 to date, was developed at a ceramic plant in Hoeganaes, Sweden, and yields? a product that has an enviable reputation as furnace feed wherever special, high-quality steels are made.

The Bunker Hill Mine, located in north Idaho, consists of over 150 miles of passageways within highly fractured and faulted Precambrian metamorphosed rocks. The Bunker Hill Mine was at one time a major producer of lead and zinc; currently it is on inactive but maintained status. Ground water moving along flow paths that have been disturbed by mining reacts with pyrite and oxygen to produce acid water within the mine. Discharge of this acid water averages more than 5 cubic feet per second, with an average zinc concentration of 160 mg/L and pH of 2.8. Treatment of this acid mine drainage is required by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). Cessation of all underground activities at the Bunker Hill Mine will not terminate the production of acid mine drainage. Reclamation alternatives that could either reduce the quantity or Improve the quality of the drainage upon mine closure are highly attractive. This project is directed towards delineation of reclamation alternatives based upon an understanding of the characteristics of ground water recharge near the mine. A variety of field techniques were used to identify areas of rapid infiltration and to investigate the ground water flow system associated with the upper portion of the mine in a portion of the Milo Creek drainage. These techniques include Installation of piezometer nests, dye tracing, surface resistivity, dye dilution, spring surveys, and hydrochemical analyses. Sites of direct Infiltration into the mine have been located. These include mine workings directly below perennial streams, intersections between streams and faults, and a caved area adjacent to an ephemeral stream. Results of these investigations indicate that recharge through these sites is not as rapid as suggested by previous studies. Inflow to the underground workings from the ground water flow system around the margin of the mine may account for more mine water than sites of direct infiltration. Recharge control at areas of direct infiltration could result in a net decrease in the quantity of acid drainage from the Bunker Hill Mine. Locations suggested for recharge control are West Milo Creek above the Guy Caving Area, the intersections of the Cate Fault with South Milo and Milo Creeks, and an area of Milo Creek below the Milo Creek Dam that overlies shallow mine workings.

Duty on Lead Reduced. -On December 28, the President signed H.R. 5047 which reduces the duty on unwrought lead from 3.5% ad valorem to 3% ad valorem, with a floor level of 1.0625 cents per pound, effective retroactively from January 1, 1980, through June 30, 1983. Pacific Northwest Power Bill Passed. -On December 5, the President signed S. 885 which will enable the Bonneville Power Administration to guarantee 20-year contracts to its 15 major industrial customers in exchange for higher rates. In effect, the bill will have industrial customers pay some of the costs of building additional generating facilities in the Northwest, of which thermal units are expected to be a major part. BPA supplies power to six primary aluminum producers which operate eleven plants having over 30% of the primary aluminum capacity in the United States.

As a service to research and production groups, succeeding bibliographies will be issued as new acquisitions accumulate in the Zirconium Information Center sponsored by the Department of the Navy, Bureau of Ships and the Bureau of Mines at the Bureau's Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg. The initial volume, Information Circular 7771, Bibliography of Zirconium, covering 969 abstracted reports and 645 United States and foreign patents, was published in April 1957.

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's), once universally accepted as ideal compounds for use in cooling and refrigeration, in foam production, and in cleaning electronic components, are being phased out and eventually banned under extensive international agreements because the chlorine in CFC's is thought to deplete the Earth's ozone layer. The industry has responded with the introduction of alternatives in the form of hydrofluorocarbons (HFC's), which contain no chlorine, and with hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC's), which fill an intermediate gap in the replacement of CFC's. As a result of the elimination of chlorine in the HFC's and the reduction of it in the HCFC's, these alternatives contain more fluorine than the CFC's do. Other nonfluorocarbon substitutes, known as not-in-kind alternatives, contain no fluorine at all. As a result, the fluorspar mining industry, which is the source of fluorine in fluorocarbons through intermediate hydrofluoric acid, is being affected. Concern for this impact has led the U.S. Bureau of Mines to employ its capabilities to analyze various scenarios in the evolution of CFC replacements and substitutes to determine their effect on fluorspar mining. This report utilizes a network flow model to examine the effects of proposed replacements for CFC's, in terms of fluorine content, on fluorspar operations worldwide and on hydrofluoric acid plants in North America and Europe.

The U.S. economy made significant progress in 1984. The current-dollar gross national product (GNP), the market value of the Nation's output of goods and services, increased almost 11 percent over that of 1983 to slightly more than $3.66 trillion (table 1), and the real gross national product increased almost 7 percent.2/ Such rapid growth in real GNP has not occurred since the early 1950's. Real final sales increased only 5 percent during 1984, and real business inventories increased $24.8 billion ($57.9 billion in current dollars). Total employment of 106.7 million was an all-time record, and the unemployment rate declined from 9.5 percent in 1983 to 7.4 percent in 1984. During 1984 the U.S. dollar showed great strength on international markets, contributing to large current-dollar negative net exports of goods and services (-$62.5 billion) and even larger negative net exports of merchandise (-$107.6 billion). The strong dollar and the substantial increase in net imports of goods and services helped reduce U.S. inflationary pressures and provided a major source of loanable funds for financing domestic private investment.

This is the fifth of a series of annual reports4/ of technologic investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines on the occurrence, properties, mining, preparation, and uses of coal. The research of the Bureau is carefully coordinated with the requirements of the producing and consuming industries, with a view to conservation of resources of coal in mining and use, and conservation of the health and lives of workmen employed in these industries. Such coordination is facilitated by the wide range of specialization of the several groups on engaged in studies concerning coal. Here are reported correlated studies ranging from paleobotanic analysis of the formation of coal as it occurred some millions of years ago to the effect of mechanical methods of mining on present-day employment in mines. As this is a summary of the current work of the Bureau of Mines, so the Bureau likewise has provided a condensed review of the outstanding current work of others on research and technology of coal 5/.

This preliminary bulletin was written as the first of a series of several on the significance of drafts in steam-boiler practice, the succeeding bulletins to be along the same lines but of a more advanced character. The conclusions arrived at are tentative, and are the result of a study of one of the many problems growing out of a general plan of the United States Government to increase the efficiency with which the coals of the country are being used. Greater efficiency requires better boiler and furnace design. The experimental study of drafts on which the conclusions presented in this bulletin are based formed part of the fuel-testing investigations that were carried on by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey and have been transferred to the Bureau of Mines. The experiments made seem to indicate that it is possible to double or treble the capacity of a plant without making any radical changes the furnaces and boilers. These increases require about double and treble the quantities of air to be put through the fuel beds and boilers. It also seems probable that rebafHing the boilers will often permit the capacity to be doubled or trebled, while still getting more steam than formerly per pound of coal for uses outside the boiler room. These experiments were undertaken with the object of clarifying ideas concerning the passage of air through fuel beds and boilers. Measured weights of air were passed through two beds of lead shot, series, one of which remained always the same and represented a boiler; the other being varied as to size of shot and depth of bed, and representing a fuel bed. Careful observations were made of the weight of air passing through the beds per minute. All data were plotted in many charts, so as to permit the study of them from several points of view. A number of laws were deduced bearing on the relative amounts of power required to force air through fuel beds of various thicknesses, composed of various sizes of coal, and through boilers of various lengths and areas of gas passages. An important part of the discussion relates to an increase in the capacity of boilers by increasing the amount of power applied to pressure and exhausting fans and thus forcing several times as much air through the fuel beds and boilers. may be possible, as a result of these investigations, to raise the rate of working the boiler heating surface to three or even four times its present value. Such an increase would undoubtedly mean new designs of grates, stokers, furnaces, and boilers, especially fitted for high rates of working. Fan equipments designed to supply three or four times as much air under several times the pressure would be provided with more efficient engines, thus giving an additional factor favoring high-capacity working. It must be borne in mind, as stated above, that the results are tentative. It will cost money to force gases at high speeds through fuel beds and boilers, and there will soon be pressing need of such quantitative data as will enable the largest possible part of the energy imparted by the fans to be advantageously utilized. This paper 3/gives the results of a reconnaissance of mining districts in Clark County, Nev., made from November 18 to December 22, 1936, and from February 9 to March 8, 1937-in all, 63 days. While the field work Was being done, virtually all of the mining districts in the county were visited and many data on active and inactive properties were obtained. The report covers the locations of the various mining districts, the nature of the deposits, information on past operations, current activity, and general data likely to be useful to operators, investors, and others interested in mining. The geology of the deposits is discussed only briefly. The principal metal-mining districts in the county are Goodsprings, Eldorado, and Searchlight. The zinc-lead ores of Goodsprings have been the most important economically, followed by the gold-silver ores of Eldorado and Searchlight. In the industrial-mineral field, gypsum, limestone, silica sand, and borates are the principal products. Metal mining in the county is characterized by numerous small operations and the ores are either milled locally or shipped to distant smelters.

The objective of this 20-month program was to define the relationships between mine ventilation, temperature, humidity, ore properties, material's used in mine operations, etc., and the spontaneous combustion problem in underground metal mines. Tradeoff studies of availability, reliability, cost, and maintenance of spontaneous combustion protection sensors and telemetry were conducted, after which a prototype system was selected from four design alternatives. This selected system was then laboratory tested and demonstrated in an underground copper mine.

This report presents a programme of work to demonstrate the use of a surface-based centralised computer control system for the remote monitoring and control of underground conveyors in a US coal mine. The system selected for demonstration was the 'Dynalink' Micro MINOS system which is manufactured by Hawker Siddeley Dynamics Engineering Limited. The site selected was Barnes S Tucker Lancashire No. 20 Mine located near Carrolltown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. The system concept, operating and application software was designed and developed by the. British National Coal Board. The report describes the selection of the site, specification of the system requirements, commissioning, operation and evaluation of the system under typical US mine operating conditions. Experience with the system, based primarily on the system reliability and performance of conveyor control, was favourable. Mine management personnel felt that the system had successfully achieved its objectives and were keen to expand monitoring and control to other activities.
