"This paper presents early results from a case study at the Mount Polley porphyry copper mine in British Columbia, Canada. Daily mineralogical data was acquired and reconciled with daily plant assay and recovery balances to interrogate the mineralogical controls on plant performance. After commissioning, the Minesite machine operated smoothly and reliably, creating daily data to generate mineralogical balances around the circuit for a period of several weeks. The key data, on final products were produced within 13 hours of the end of the respective operating period. The resulting information allowed for a greater understanding of the opportunities and limitations of the Mount Polley metallurgy. In this paper, how this information can be used to help long term strategic planning for the operation, as well as mine planning and production forecasting and the fine tuning of day to day mill operations is described. Early data available at the time of preparing this paper indicated that roughly 40% of the sulphide losses, or 32% of total copper losses existed as low grade inclusions in +75 micron tails. This represented the dominant form of long term copper losses, demonstrated repeatedly in the routine analytical data. However, on a day-to-day basis, the amount of copper present as chrysocolla is the major driver behind variations in total copper recovery. The degree to which this influences mill recovery is valuable to the geologist or mine planner. As they are armed with mineral speciation information for future ores, this will allow for improved mine planning, prediction of copper recoveries and production forecasting. The data was also started to find value in the mill by showing what caused sulphide losses. In the roughers, for example, the data showed poor recovery was the result of poor flotation performance and not any changes the speciation of copper sulphides or their liberation characteristics."

"The mining industry is currently facing significant challenges to identify and adopt sustainable collector chemistry that effectively recover value minerals in difficult-to-process low-grade resources. These are typically characterized by complex mineralogy and the presence of significant amounts of penalty gangue sulfide minerals, especially pyrit which is a challenge to separate from value minerals at many major mine operations. Three chemical strategies for dealing with gangue sulfides and penalty elements are: a) selective flotation of value minerals while rejecting penalty minerals in the whole circuit, b) rejecting penalty minerals in an appropriate part of the circuit using selective depressants, c) using a combination of selective collectors and depressants in appropriate parts of the circuit. This paper will evaluate different strategies for dealing with those penalty elements and propose the most efficient alternative. New products and application technologies have been developed in the past 25 years by Cytec for implementing these strategies as dictated by the particular needs of a given plant. However, in recognition of the growing interest in meeting the sustainability challenges, Cytec Research and Development have been focused in the development of greener products (collectors, modifiers and frothers) and processes using FLOTATION MATRIX 100TM approach used to develop the optimal collector system for each specific ore. An overview of these new developments is given in this paper using case studies of application of selective collectors and polymeric modifiers including the newer, greener chemistries."

Russia is one of the largest manufacturers of potash fertilizers in the world. Processing of potash ores basically is carried out by a flotation way. Potash ores of the Verhnekamsky potash deposit contain sylvite (KCl), halite (NaCl) and water insoluble impurity (up to 8 %), presented silicate- carbonate minerals, easily slimed by ore crushing in rod mills. Ore of some deposit sites, developed by ?Uralkali? Co, contains a significant amount of a carnal-lite (KCl.MgCl2.6H2O). Work practice of flotation potash plants has shown, that increase of car-nallite content in ore leads to increase magnesium ion content in a circulated plant brine (saturated salt solution of potassium and sodium chlorides-sylvite brine) and to deterioration of indicators of ore processing. In the Paper we present results of researches of floatability of various size sylvite and influences silicate-carbonate slimes on sylvite flotation in brines with the various magnesium chloride content. It is established, that with increase magnesium chloride content in the brine mainly decreases the flotation of coarse sylvite and amplifies adverse effect of silicate-carbonate slimes on sylvite flotation. In this connection deterioration of potash ore flotation is caused not only decrease sylvite floatability but also strengthening adverse action of water insoluble impurity on potash flotation. It is shown that the application of frothing agents, which render the stronger dispersive action on the colloidal-micellar structures of amine in the salt solution increases the absorption of collector on the sylvite and improves the flotation of sylvite into magnesium the containing salt solutions. The application of an organic depressor to the greatest degree of decreasing the absorption amine on the slimes and to the smallest degree possessing anionic properties proves to be most effective with the flotation carnallite of the containing potassium ores. It is offered the application the frother on a basis of glycol ethers and organic depressor on a basis of urea-formaldehyde resin. Results of industrial tests developed reagent modes for flotation treatment of ores with the raised carnallite content (to 6 %) on ?Uralkali? Co plant have shown that their application has allowed to receive equivalent indicators potash flotations at change of magnesium chloride content in the brine from 0.7 % up to 2.4 % .

Large quantities of electrical and electronic equipments are discarded at the end-of-life (EOL) in different industries and house hold applications. Their disposal is creating a challenging environmental problem due to the presence of hazardous metals and non-metallic materials such as epoxy resins and plastics including brominated flame retardants etc particularly in printed circuit boards (PCBs). The recovery valuable metals and separation of hazardous materials from discarded PCBs will not only conserve the resources but also mitigate the environmental pollution. From a recycling point of view for a sustainable society, the studies have been carried out for the recovery of metal values from EOL-PCBs of DVD video players (DVD-PCBs) and vacuum cleaners (VC-PCBs) using physical beneficiation techniques. The concentration of the metals was found to be 43 wt.% and 30 wt.% in DVD-PCBs and VC-PCBs, respectively. Both the PCBs samples were ground in a hammer mill after cutting and their size analysis was carried out. The liberation of the metallic and non-metallic fractions was investigated under the microscope for different size fractions. Subsequently, froth flotation and pneumatic air separation studied were carried out to enrich the metallic constituents. The studies showed the enrichment of metals in coarser particles (-1000 +150 µm) and non-metals in the finer particles -150 µm following mechanical recycling process. A grade of 90 % with 75% recovery was achieved by froth flotation, but lower grade and recovery of 75% and 65% respectively were obtained by pneumatic separation with -1500 µm powders for DVD-PCBs. A grade of 86% metal was obtained by froth flotation with 76% recovery in the case of VC-PCBs. The lower grade of 65% with almost same recovery was achieved during pneumatic separation studies due to lower concentration of metals in VC-PCBs. The studies also showed that the froth flotation is an efficient process for enrichment of metals from both the samples. The process is environmental friendly as no chemicals are employed during entire processing. The higher recovery and grade of metal is expected to be obtained on a large scale beneficiation process.

Thickening is the most widely applied dewatering technique in mineral processing. Thickeners are used to increase the concentration of suspension by sedimentation, accompanied by the formation of a clear liquid. As the particles get finer the thickening process encounters difficulty due to a significant change in the settling behaviour of particles. The batch settling tests of coal refuse of a coal washing plant which contained 91% particles smaller than 38µm and 0.6% coarser than 75 µm showed that the optimum feed percent solids that provided highest flux (solids handling capacity) was 4%. The flux of the pulp with the plant solids concentration (i.e., 10%) was 60% lower than that of the pulp with 4% solids. A thickener with a diameter of 22m based on the dilution of feed from solids concentration of 10% to 4% was designed. Monitoring of the thickener performance for a period of one month in the plant indicated that on average the feedrate of 25t/h (dry solids) with solids concentration of 10% could be thickened to the underflow concentration of 26.5% with a clear water overflow. It was found that the key component of the successful operation of the thickener is the dilution of the feed without which the overflow loses its clarity and the system ceases to operate under predetermined conditions. Specially designed feeding system which efficiently dissipated the energy of the incoming flow and staged flocculant addition regime are among the main contributing factors in making the design and operation of such thickener possible.

"Wetting theory is one of the basic theories of flotation. The effects of concentrations, carbon chain length and pH values of saturated fatty acid collectors (lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid and stearic acid) on the surface wettability of collophanite and dolomite were investigated by measuring the contact angle with dynamic captive-bubble technique and calculating adhesion work of bubble-mineral. The results show that the contact angles both of collophanite and dolomite are higher with enhancement of hydrophobicity when pH value of 5~9. The contact angles both of collophanite and dolomite are reduced with improvement of surface hydrophilicity. When strong acid pH value of 2~4 or strong alkaline pH value of 10~13. The reasons for this are that the fatty acids mainly exist with insoluble RCOOH molecules in strong acid condition, and competitive adsorption of OH- and RCOO- in the mineral surface is formed in strong alkaline condition. With the increase of the collector concentration, the contact angles of the collophanite and the dolomite all first increase then decrease. The formation of hydrophilic micelles results in the decreasing of contact angles and enhancement of surface hydrophilicity opposite when the collector concentration exceeds CMC. The contact angles of the collophanite and dolomite and the WSG of the bubble adhesion increase, the hydrophobicity enhance with the increasing of carbon chains of saturated fatty acid from 12 to 18. The variation tendency for the adsorption quantity of collectors and floatability of collophanite and dolomite are in line with the change trend of contact angle basically. It shows that the wettability of solid-liquid-gas interface can be well characterized by the dynamic captive-bubble technique.INTRODUCTIONPhosphorite resources are the main raw material for producing phosphate fertilizer and producing phosphoric acid (Cao et al.,2005), which is an important strategic mineral resource. The useful minerals in calcareous-magnesium phosphate ore are collophanite, and the main gangue minerals are dolomite (SISH et al.,2003). The lattice ions of the phosphorite and dolomite are both Ca2+, their similar surface properties and similar floatability are the main reason for the flotation of calcareous-magnesium phosphate ore difficultly (Fang et al.,2011). Usually, fatty acid collectors are used for the flotation of calcareous-magnesium phosphate ore under acidic conditions by reversing flotation method to remove dolomite (ABOUZEID et al.,2009), or direct flotation is used to gather collophanite in the alkaline conditions (Gong et al.,2017). The flotation behavior of collophanite and dolomite affects the indexes of concentrate and flotation efficiency directly. Therefore, it is necessary to study the action mechanism and the flotation method of the collector with the phosphate rock and dolomite respectively (Moudgil et al.,1988; Hanna, et al.,1990)."

The existing construction and demolition (C and D) waste recycling technologies and standards have been essentially focused on the production and use of coarse recycled aggregates. Very few papers focus on the production of recycled sand, although some previous results show that fine aggregates fraction represents around 40 to 60% (in mass) of the Brazilian waste and it is usually used as road sub-base or disposed in landfills. The quality of the recycled aggregate is strictly related to the content of porous and low strength phases, mainly the patches of cement remaining on recycled aggregate surface. Some technologies have already been described in the literature, even though, to the moment none of these technologies has clearly succeeded in reaching the large market available. This paper presents a summary of the main properties of the sand produced from C and D waste by tertiary crushing at vertical shaft impact crusher (VSI). Additionally mineral processing technologies were applied on the attained product, such as gravity concentration by shaking table and spirals and removal of cement paste by attrition. The main properties of recycled sand are discussed and compared to the previous C and D waste, respectively: particle size distribution, particle shape, chemical composition, cement paste content and porosity. The results demonstrates that the crushing allowed producing a VSI-sand with low porosity and water absorption due to the increasing on the content of silicates from natural rock phases and increasing liberation between these phases and porous cement paste; the particles from the attained product presented also a better shape (sphericity and aspect ratio). The attrition tests assayed on VSI recycled fine aggregates accomplished a further selective disaggregation of cement paste and other porous materials - the porosity was reduced from 10% to 7%. The concentration by shaking table at narrow sieve fractions led to a product with low porosity and reduced content of cement paste, however, concentration on spirals did not succeed since separation was performed essentially by the size of the particles. The heavy product from shaking table represented almost 75% in weight and has less than 60% recovery of CaO+LOI, and expressive reduction on porosity. The aim of producing sand from construction and demolition waste through mineral processing unit operations changes the recycling approach and contributes for up cycling the recycled sand. The exhaustion of sand deposits on Brazilian large centers, the increasing price and the construction boom encourages the development of alternative materials as construction raw material. Reverse flotation process tests were conducted for marine sedimentary silicon-calcium phosphate ore in this research. The research findings showed that by adding antifoamer, a concentrate with P2O5 32.36%, SiO2 10.69%, MgO 0.67% was obtained, with recovery of P2O5 being 88.12%. Such is a satisfying result, when compared with the original mineralogical component of P2O5 26.64%, SiO2 11.51% and MgO 3.36%. When using antifoamer, the SiO2 grade of the concentrate increased 0.55%, the MgO grade decreased 0.64%, while P2O5 recovery increased 2.69% compared by adding no antifoamer. Adding antifoamer is favorable to increase the grade and recovery of P2O5. Therefore, antifoamer is necessary. Tests of synergistic reaction of antifomer indicate that the appropriate consumption of the antifoamer is 275g/t CY and 1Kg/t TWF. Over the years, Coal Beneficiation at Tata Steel - West Bokaro has seen varied changes. With increasing R.O.M throughputs & lowering of the concentrate ash, Fine Coal Beneficiation process has thrown up myriad challenges. Development of Synthetic Collector was initiated couple of years back with Technical assistance from NLC Nalco India Ltd. Coal from West Bokaro unit was sent to Nalco?s Naperville (US) research lab for developing Tailor made synthetic collector . After comprehensive lab flotation studies, synthetic collector was developed & recommended for plant evaluation. The lab scale results were very promising in terms of improved separation efficiency & yield at similar ash level. The collector sample received from Nalco research laboratory were revalidated at Nalco Kolkata lab and finally at Tata Steel West Bokaro lab, confirming the promising results. (S.E 25-30 % better than HS Diesel) The key factors playing out for this improvement initiative are a) Scope for improvement in Clean Coal Yield at same or lower ash level coupled with improved Selectivity and Separation Efficiency b) Introduction of a Synthetic Collector with a Green Chemistry and subsequent replacement of H S Diesel, which is highly inflammable with a less inflammable & safer product Trial was conducted at plant scale in two phases and comparative performance of the Collector vis-à-vis Diesel was evaluated across the following Coal Seams of Q- SE (Seam VII, VIII, VI, IX and X). The results generated are very promising and the improvements observed are summarized below. ? Separation efficiency improvement by more than 20% observed. ? Flotation Fines yield increase varied from 0.6- 1.5 % on raw coal basis across different seams. ? Consumption pattern is 20-25 % lower than Diesel. By means of natural sedimentation, two different bentonite samples from Shandong province were purified, this paper studies the Hydro-properties of the two purified montmorillonite samples. Firstly, the layer charge of two purified montmorillonite samples were calculated by crystal structure formula reckon method and general hydro-properties were also measured. The research results showed that the layer charge of montmorillonite correlated well with its hydro-properties: mont-morillonite with lower layer charge had better hydro-properties, such as Mont-1, which had higher swelling volume and gelling value with lower CEC; while, montmorillonite with higher layer charge had worse hydro-properties, such as Mont-2, which had lower swell volume and gelling value with higher CEC; it proves that the hydro-properties of montmorillonite depends on its layer charge characteristics, layer charge characteristic is the inherent factors deciding the hydro-properties of montmorillonite, montmorillonite with lower layer charge has better hydro-properties than the one with higher layer charge. In this paper, the relation between the medium condition and colloid performance of Mont-1 are also studied. The results show that the hydro-properties of Mont-1 could be changed by changing slurry concentration (w/w) and shear rate or adding certain amounts of inorganic cation electrolytes, dispersants and surfactants. The viscosity of montmorillonite slurry could be enhanced by increasing slurry concentration,adding univalentcation electrolytes (less than 4% w/w) or proper amounts of dispersants and surfactants (less than critical micelle concentration); The slurry viscosity could be reduced by decreasing slurry concentration, increasing shear rate, adding proper bivalent (more than 4% w/w) cation electrolytes or proper quantities of dispersants and surfactants (more than critical micelle concentration).

An innovative hybrid technology for beneficiation of difficult-to-process sedimentary copper ores comprising acidic leaching stage of the feed combined with subsequent flotation has been presented. Acidic leaching, preceding the flotation process, plays a beneficial role of efficient chemical grinding for liberation of copper sulphide minerals finely disseminated in the copper-bearing carbonate-shale rocks. The process was applied on a fully industrial scale. Flotation results were analysed for both chemically modified and unmodified flotation feeds. After several months of industrial scale operation, it was found that both metals recovery and concentrate grade remarkably increased as a result of application of chemical modification of the flotation feed. Beneficial effects of chemical pre-treatment of flotation middlings on selectivity at a comparable concentrate yield in industrial flotation scale, revealed a considerable increase of the total copper recovery by 3.5percent. Based on the industrial and laboratory investigations we consider a further development of the process and introduction of hydrometallurgy for better recovering of metals from low-grade copper concentrates

Joda East Iron Mine, one of the captive iron ore sources of Tata steel, located in the state of Odisha in eastern India caters to approximately 45% of the iron ore requirement of the Jamshedpur Steel Plant. The iron ore occurring in the mine having high in iron content along with high in alumina. Clay and gibbsite are the predominant mineral phases present as surface coating, fracture filling and/or free occurring and are responsible for alumina content higher. Alumina in iron ore impacts the techno-economic performance of a steel plant by impacting sintering and blast furnace productivity. The impact is even higher when it comes to fine ore used in the blast furnaces in the form of sinter as it constitutes a major portion of the blast furnace burden. Therefore, it is beneficial to upgrade iron ore in the mine head and to reduce alumina before it is subjected to agglomeration. Mineralogical test works reveal, that alumina in iron fines is mainly associated with the clay attached to the hematite particles, either free or interlocked to a very fine size. The paper describes the efforts made to reduce alumina in the iron fines in Joda East processing plant, without much of capital investment for a very sophisticated fines beneficiation circuit. In this process, a suitable dispersant was added in the plant that dispersed the masked slime coating over the iron ore fines, thereby making a better quality iron ore fines with reduced alumina content. The alumina in fines improved by 0.2 units? means from a label of 2.4-2.6 % reduced to 2.2-2.4 %. With this initiative, not only the primary objective of alumina reduction is met but also it has given substantial benefit in reduction of silica and as well as moisture in product. This moisture reduction also has given bottom line impact by reducing idle freight and royalty.

Many thickener operations continue to be constrained by their ability to process consolidated underflows with high yield stress and associated rheological characteristics. To maximise separation efficiencies within a thickener operation the use of both engineering and reagents are always considered. BASF is developing a Novel Flocculant Technology (NFT), which combines both of these aspects to enhance the performance of the thickener operation, improving the areas of pumping efficiency, underflow density and throughput. The development progression through stages of laboratory scale batch test work to pilot scale dynamic testing has demonstrated the ability of BASF NFT to maintain effective flocculation performance whilst increasing the rate of underflow consolidation, and significantly reducing the associated underflow yield stress of the treated material. This paper will present application data through full scale dynamic testing conducted on a granite washing circuit to demonstrate the performance benefits that NFT offers to a thickener operation. Compared to the conventional flocculant treatment, within the operation parameters and conditions employed during the full scale trials, the NFT produced a reduction in underflow rheology (yield stress) of around 45 % relative to a given solids and improved the underflow consolidation by providing at least 20% relative higher underflow solids loading than the upper limit of the given typical thickener operation. Fine particles are the most valuable because they are the most liberated. However, they are also the most expensive and difficult to recover and concentrate. The Reflux Classifier is a novel invention that combines many of the virtues of existing fine particle separation technologies in a way that provides profound synergies. Multiple parallel narrow channels create a laminar-shear separation zone. The laminar flow provides a well-defined velocity gradient that exposes particles on the wall to a conveying velocity that is approximately proportional to their size, thus reducing the dependence of elutriation velocity on particle size. The high shear rate in these channels generates a hydrodynamic lift force that selectively lifts low-density particles off the channel wall and thus causes them to be preferentially conveyed out in the overflow. Particles that are not elutriated slide back down into the mixing reflux zone beneath the inclined channels which gives them multiple opportunities to re-enter the channels. The resultant suspension of both coarse and fine high-density particles in the fluidized bed zone at the base of the unit generates a strong autogenous dense medium that helps to direct large low-density particles back up to the overflow. The fluidization water also simultaneously de-slimes the high density underflow product. When placed in a centrifuge, the benefits of these features multiply with the improvements in capacity and selectivity that arise from high G-forces. When inverted, these features can be used to perform flotation well beyond the conventional flooding limit. Hence this invention platform has the potential to dramatically improve both gravity and flotation separation performance across the minerals processing industry.

"The Reflux Flotation Cell (RFC) consists of an inverted fluidized bubbly bed, located above a system of parallel inclined channels. This novel arrangement enhances the hydrodynamics of flotation in a number of ways. Firstly, the free-surface of the flotation cell is enclosed via a fluidized bed distributor, ensuring uniform application of wash water to promote desliming. Secondly, foams can be variable in their stability and lack permeability. Hence this system is preferably operated in the absence of foam, instead opting for a bubbly zone of high bubble volume fraction through the use of a very high gas flux and/or wash water flux. Discharge of the product proceeds upwards through a central port of narrow cross-sectional area. Thirdly, the system of inclined channels increases the segregation between the bubbles and the water, ensuring the bubbly zone remains contained within the upper vertical zone, and the liquid flux reporting to the overflow is low. The expanded operating regime of the RFC was investigated by covering a very broad range of gas fluxes, up to 5.5 cm/s, and wash water fluxes, over 2 cm/s. Both laboratory and pilot plant performances were quantified by the recovery of hydrophobic particles and rejection of the hydrophilic particles, using model and industrial coal feeds. The new system hydrodynamics was found to offer significant advantages in flotation kinetics, desliming, and particle recovery across a broad particle size range. Bubble interfacial flux reached as high as 600 m2/m-2s-1. The upper system consists entirely of a high volume fraction of bubbles, which provides a "safety-net" to protect against the detachment of coarse particles, and a highly permeable zone for counter-current washing of the flotation product. Under relatively extreme conditions selective stripping of the product is observed, resulting in grade recovery values beyond those achievable using the tree flotation method."

Chromium ore exploitation has commenced in 1948 in Albania and there are produced about 24.3 million tons up to the end of 2006. Last years the prices and need were increased notably. Main export of chromium ores and concentrates was accomplished respectively 114 500 ton and 13 000 ton in People Republic of China during 2006 year. Location, status, reserves and grade of chromium deposits of Albania are presented in the paper. Chromium ore enrichment is related with their composition and Cr2O3 content, as well as with market requests. Actually, high grade chromium ores with Cr2O3 content over 38% ~ 40% are directly exported or treated in metallurgy, but last time have been exported and chromium ores with 28% ~ 30% Cr2O3 content for the reason that dressing plants can not be operated for investment lack. High grade chromium ores have been treated in heavy media separation plant before 1990. It is presented flow sheet, figures and necessity to put in operation HMS plant in the paper. Actually, low grade chromium ores with content 16% ~ 20% Cr2O3 are not enriched for the lack of investments, but before 1990 they have been concentrated in dressing plants producing chromium concentrates grade 48% ~ 50% Cr2O3. In the paper are shown technological schemes and industrial figures during more than 20 years operation and possibilities to reconstruct these mineral processing plants. Only chromium mineral processing plant of Bulqiza is in operation using as raw material its old existing tailings. The flow sheet and figures show that are possibilities to increase recovery and grade of concentrate in the plant. Separation and concentration of slimes in suitable equipment gives visible improvement of Cr2O3 recovery. Several tests have been carried out with flotation and magnetic separation methods for enrichment of low grade chromium ores. Flow sheet and figures of mineral processing ores content olivine as gangue mineral are interesting, because combination of gravimetric with magnetic methods is necessary in this case. In the paper are presented the tests and good results of low chromium ore pre concentration. Metallurgical treatment of chromium ores to produce Ferro chrome, as well as technological process, figures, consume of electrical power and materials in Elbasani and Burreli furnaces are shown and necessary investments to treat in metallurgy all produced chromium ores in Albania are considered.

In this paper, an evaluation about the process mineralogy of the rich iron mine in Mongolia with comprehensive methods is given; this provides foundation of the comprehensive recovery of iron and cobalt in the ore. The research shows that the iron?s grade is 61.23%, Co?s grade is 0.02%, the ore is rich iron ore and its Co content also reaches border mining grade. For the ore, if want get high grade iron concentrate powder, must identify the mineral composition and the occurrence of iron and take into ac-count the recovery of Co content as associated resources. Chemical phase analysis results show that 86.35% of iron exists in magnetite, which means that the theoretical recovery ratio of iron is close to 86%. Minerals spectrum analysis confirmed that the magnetite containing a small amount of Mg, Al, and other impurities, the actual iron minerals to 70.28%, which means that theoretically iron grade iron concentrate only close to 70.28%. Based on the result of iron chemical phase analysis, by investigating the liberation of sulfide minerals and gangue, the recovery index of iron can be forecasted, when grinding fineness is 35%, 45%, 55% and 65% bellow 0.074mm,theoretical content of Fe in iron concentrate separately is 67.71%,67.88%,68.78%,and 69.43%,accordingly the theoretical recovery of Fe is 87.38%,87.05%,86.92% and 86.63%. From the perspective of process mineralogy, the forecast mineral beneficiation indicators show that the ore is easy sorting ore, iron processing operations have higher recovery rate, but wants sorting of high-grade iron ore concentrate still need appropriate grinding fineness. Furthermore, associated element Co, existing mostly in pyrite and pyrrhotite, is valuable in the ore. Pyrite and pyrrhotite have ideal liberation under grinding, so cobalt can be easily enriched in sulfide concentrate.

The slag produced in metallurgical smelting processes contains considerable amount of valuable metals. The present work focuses on recovery of copper value by froth flotation from the copper smelter slag. The slag samples are subjected to detailed characterization including automated quantitative mineralogy using Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA). The MLA results indicate that a part of copper is present in sulphide form in fayalite (iron-silicate) matrix and very poorly liberated. SEM-EDX analyses also reveal that a certain part of the copper is present within the fayalite (Fe-Ca-Si) matrix, perhaps either as lattice impurity or very fine grain. The copper smelter slag is ground in wet mode in a ball mill, to particle size distribution suitable for flotation. Subsequently, the slurry undergoes froth-flotation in lab-scale Denver-type flotation cell. Various combinations of sodium iso-propyl xanthate (SIPX) and alkyl hydroxamate collectors are used along with pine oil as frother. A multiple collector dosage is required for effective flotation of non-sulphide copper phases associated fayalite and alkyl hydroxamate is identified as one of the effective collector for non-sulphide minerals. The copper recovery can be enhanced by 7-10% with a combination of collectors as compared to conventional sulphide flotation using only xanthate type collectors. There are many measuring methods of grain sizes. Taking into consideration the fine grained materials, one of the existing techniques is measurement of grain size by the Coulter Counter method. This method is based on the measuring the changes of electrolyte resistance during grains flow through the calibrated diaphragm. This method is relatively simple to apply, significantly precise and the results are given quickly. However, the problem is that the measurements are limited by the size of diaphragm. Because of this situation, measurement of grain sizes by this instrument is possible in range from 10% to 60% of diaphragm diameter. This limitation causes the necessity of re-placing diaphragm in case when the measured grain size distribution concerns the material of large size range. In purpose of determining the total grain size distribution, the synthesis of some partial distributions, given for individual grain fractions (with different diaphragm applied), is required. This is possible to do by calculating the mixture of distribution functions, created from the partial distribution functions. Two materials were selected to research: quartzite and glass, which were comminuted in cylindrical crusher, additionally grinded, screened and then analyzed by Coulter Counter for five grain fractions: 0~125 µm, 0~80 µm, 0~56 µm, 0~40 µm and 0~25 µm. For each fraction, five different partial distributions were given (in case of glass ? four), which are the basis for the creating the joined grain composition. To assure the adequacy of the given distribution function, it is necessary to obtain the possibly best approximation of partial distributions. In the work, both the parametric and non-parametric methods of density approximations of investigated random variable. For each grain fraction the approximations were done by three traditional distribution functions: RRB, GSA and log-norm distribution functions and three methods of non-parametric approximation: Gauss kernel, Epanechnikov kernel and orthogonal Fourier series method. "The extraction of gold in the Philippines has been a significant challenge for the past decades. Around 70-75% of gold mined in the country can be accounted from the small-scale mining industry which primarily use the traditional cyanidation and amalgamation; processes which have been advocated due to its adverse affects to health and environment. To address this challenge, an alternative clean and sustainable technology was developed for the small-scale miners to recover gold and other metal/mineral values efficiently from Philippine ores. An initial survey was conducted and followed through with extensive mineralogical investigations ascertain the best method applicable. It was determined that Philippine gold occur in ore as (1) very fine particles in the microns range, (2) free-milling, which is in abundance, and (3) locked particles with sulfides --- it was concluded that enhanced gravity concentration and flotation are viable alternatives. A comprehensive test regime was followed to check the response of the ores obtained from different small-scale mining districts across the country. It was shown conclusively that the gold ores respond positively, with recoveries using gravity concentration and flotation of at least 95% and 88%, respectively; exceeding the nominal recoveries using cyanidation or amalgamation. A specific process flow was designed for each type of ore with customized parameters. It was determined that while capital expenditure of implementing these alternative processes is higher than what is currently being used, the operational aspects show that it is much more economical to apply enhanced gravity and flotation. It should be noted that the process developed addresses the critical issue of environmental costs which should be more than enough to justify the shift from the current to the novel and sustainable technologies."
