This paper states how alloy and welding advances have made possible the rapid development of the use of aluminum in the construction of equipment for earth moving and off -highway rock hauling. The main details are given regarding the construction and field testing carried out on an aluminum prototype body. The test results of strain gauge readings are analysed, and a description is given of how these have been applied in subsequent designs. The increase in the number of aluminum units put into the various types of service in Canada, as well as the problems encountered, is described, and the experience gained from five years of field service is discussed in some detail. An assessment is also made of the durability of the e units. The economics of using aluminum, together with the current development position, are reviewed, and predictions are made for considerable future increases in the use of aluminum units in open-pit and off-highway operations.

"Bell Copper is situated (Latitude 55°0''N, Longitude 126°14W) on Newman Peninsula on the east side of Babine Lake at an altitude of 2,450 feet above sea level. The mine site is approximately 170 miles north west of Prince George and 40 miles east of Smithers. Access to the property is by way of 30 miles of paved road to the Village of Granisle on the west shore of Babine Lake and then a further 9 miles of unpaved road to Bell Copper's west dock. The two mile lake crossing is made using a tug and barge. A compressed air bubbler system maintains an ice free channel for the barge during the winter months.Temperatures range from summer maximums of around 32 °C to winter minimums in the region of minus 40°C. Long periods in winter may be spent with temperatures in the range of minus 15""C to minus 28°C. Freezing temperatures usually start in October and last for six months. The lake normally freezes over in mid December and the ice breaks up in mid May. Snow accounts for approximately two t11irds of the annual precipitation of twenty-one inches."

This paper presents a procedure to prepare input for the computerized pit design system at Iron Ore Company of Canada. The procedure is simple and requires very little training. Also, it is general enough to accept both bench (horizontal cross section) maps and section (vertical cross section) maps. The output of this procedure is data which represent blocks of ore and waste with dollar values based on mineral content. The ultimate pit design is presented in printer-generated graphs, with numbers indicating the depths of pit bottom walls. Roads are added manually by the engineer with the aid of other computer programs. Section maps and bench maps are also printed as part of the output of the ultimate pit design.

Les gisements de sulfures massifs volcanogènes sont situés au sommet du Groupe du Lac Watson. Ces roches sont déformées par l'anticlinal de Galinée dont l'axe, orienté E-W, plonge vers l'ouest. Le cœur de cette structure est occupé par le Complexe de la Rivière Bell.Les roches volcaniques du flanc sud de l'anticlinal sont peu déformées et pendent à 45° vers le sud. Les gites qui s'y trouvent présentent la morphologie typique des gisements de sulfures massifs volcanogènes. Ceux-ci se situent le long d'un horizon repère cherteux et sulfure, appelé ""Tuffite Clef', et leurs cheminées d'altération rejoignent, en profondeur, une zone d'altération stratiforme d'étendue régionale.Les roches du flanc nord ont été transposées tectoniquement en écailles chevauchantes, de dimension kilométrique, a l'intérieur d'un couloir de failles anastomosées d'orientation est-ouest. A l'intérieur: le ce couloir, les gites de sulfures sont déformes et sépares de leur héminée d'altération sous-jacente par des failles.Les gites de sulfures situes sur les deux flancs de l'anticlinal de 'Galinée se seraient mis en place dans un mime environnement volcanique. Leur position stratigraphique est identique puisqu' ils se 'rouvent au sommet de la rhyolite porphyrique du Groupe du Lac Watson. lis se seraient constitués au cours d'une pose volcanique recédant 1'éruption du basalte du Groupe de Wabassee. Le Complexe de la Rivière Bell est perçu comme la source de chaleur responsable de la circulation des fluides hydrothermaux qui sont à ""origine des gisements de sulfures massifs volcanogènes."

Selective flotation of molybdenite and chalcopyrite using various oxidation treatments (i.e., ozone treatment, hydrogen peroxide, and Fenton-like reagent) was studied in this work. It was found that ozone treatment produced a depressing effect on both minerals, resulting in a lower separation of both minerals. On the other hand, oxidation treatment using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and Fenton-like reagent could deliver selective oxidation on chalcopyrite surface and depress its floatability. However, bench-scale copper- molybdenum (Cu-Mo) flotation tests show that oxidation treatment using H2O2 required a higher dosage of H2O2 and a longer treatment time in order to deliver comparable flotation results to that of conventional Cu- Mo flotation using NaHS treatment. On the contrary, Fenton-like reagent could deliver selective Cu-Mo flotation results comparable to that of NaHS treatment at a lower dosage of H2O2 and a shorter conditioning time. Contact angle measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis were employed to understand the depressing mechanism of these oxidation treatments. It was found that the chalcopyrite surface covered by various oxidation products that render the surface hydrophilic. Meanwhile, the surface of molybdenite was slightly oxidized, making the surface remained hydrophobic. INTRODUCTION Molybdenite (MoS2), the main source of molybdenum, is associated with copper sulfide minerals, mainly chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), as a trace mineral. Molybdenite is a valuable mineral and plays an important role in making the copper-molybdenum (Cu-Mo) processing plant economically viable (Laskowski, Castro, & Ramos, 2013). Therefore, it is important to recover molybdenite efficiently and effectively and separate it from copper minerals. Conventional separation of copper and molybdenum minerals is usually carried out in selective Cu- Mo flotation process using a copper depressant (i.e., sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), Noke’s reagent, or cyanides) (Ansari & Pawlik, 2007; Bulatovic, 2007). However, this process still suffers due to imperfect molybdenum recovery. Moreover, the copper depressants use in this process are toxic and harmful to the environment. As alternative, various methods have been developed to replace these toxic and hazardous depressants, for example, by synthesizing new non-toxic or low-toxic depressants or by using various oxidation methods such as sodium hypochlorite in an alkaline medium, manganese dioxide, oxygen, and plasma pre-treatment (United States Patent Office Patent No. US 2559104 A, 1951; Patent No. US2238250 A, 1941; Barzyk, Malysa, & Pomianowski, 1981; Hirajima et al., 2014). However, the oxidation phenomenon and mechanisms are still not clear since detailed surface analyses have not done and the plasma pre-treatment method is facing technical issues for industrial scale application.

The firms in construction industry could not sufficiently adapt the rapidly emerging information technologies in recent years into their corporate structures. Therefore, in an effort to further exploit the benefits of information technology (IT), integration of the experiences and backgrounds of construction industry and the advantages of IT, is one of the most open-ended fields for improvement in this industry. Utilization of IT in the construction sites will positively affect the efficiency, productivity, quality and health & safety issues in the construction sites thus the cost and completion time of the projects. Within this context, augmented reality technology, which brings a new perspective into IT, can be put into the service of construction industry. Augmented reality which has been designed to improve the services in many application domains such as school education, military warfare, military trainings, industrial maintenance, retail and medical, can be defined in the simplest form as augmenting the real world with information from the virtual world. The main aim of this study, which presents an overview of an ongoing project, is to develop an innovative method by making a construction worker, foreman, equipment operator or a site engineer watch a very comprehensive and informative animation which will enable the said staff to perform or supervise all the phases of the activity he or she is in charge for in a more efficient, productive, safer and qualified manner by means of smart glasses using augmented reality systems. In this respect, training material related with the activities in the construction sites will be prepared and with a well-fictionalized scenario, animations exhibiting all the phases and details regarding the related activity (e.g. masonry, formwork and rebar works etc.), method of statement, correct and incorrect applications in comparison-wise manner, will be produced. Therefore, the user will be able to reach the training material, method statements etc. in the animations about the activity he or she is in charge for, enabling him or her to figure out the work as prescribed in the specifications. Basic trainings about the system will be given to target group, i.e. construction workers, foremen, operators, site engineers and managers working in the construction sites to apply the system on sites after all the system was tested. After the testings, to determine the effectiveness of this system, semi-structured interviews and survey questionnaires will be conducted among the mentioned target group. Therefore, the potential benefits of this system to the construction industry can be determined. The main target of this study is to implement an efficient, thorough construction management by orienting the staff in the construction sites to perform efficient, safe and qualified works by means of smart glasses that use augmented reality. There are relatively few studies about the implementations of augmented reality technology in construction. The outputs to be attained in the end of the study have the potential of improvement of time, cost, quality and safety parameters by ensuring a qualified, safe, efficient and productive construction management via augmented reality technology in the construction industry.

Zinc metal was first produced in India around 1100 A.O. and a zinc industry based on retorting gradually developed in both India and China(1) . The vertical retort method for smelting zinc ores was developed in England in the 1730s; this was followed by the more fuel efficient horizontal retort process developed by the Belgians in the 19th century(2) . The horizontal retort process was the standard method of zinc manufacture until the 1950s when it became obvious that it could not compete with electrolytic zinc technology(2). The present day extractive metallurgy of zinc is dominated by the electrolytic process which now accounts for almost 80% of the world's primary zinc production. In recent years the electrolytic zinc process has seen significant improvements: the fluid-bed roasting of zinc concentrates, improved leaching and residue treatment techniques such as the jarosite and goethite processes, improved solution purification procedures, mechanization of the zinc electrolysis step and of the zinc melting and casting operation. In addition, new leaching processes have been implemented for the treatment of oxidized ores, particularly silicates, and the pressure leaching of zinc sulphide concentrates is now a commercial reality. Although the electrolytic zinc process was first used on a commercial scale in 1916, its history can be traced back to the 1860s. The purpose of the present paper is to outline the early history of the electrolytic zinc process and to trace the significant developments which led to the first successful commercial electrolytic zinc plants.

An extensive Precambrian iron-formation lies about 2,000 ft. beneath post-Precambrian rocks in the Fort a Ia Corne Forest Reserve, south of Choiceland, Saskatchewan. The geology, deduced from limited drill results and from some geophysical observations, indicates that the deposit is a characteristic magnetite iron-formation, not uncommon in the exposed Precambrian of Saskatchewan, but also shows certain interesting features of faulting and pre-Paleozoic weathering which have given rise to a pre-served detrital deposit of hematite. The body is of ore grade and of sizeable proportions. T HIS paper is presented in order to set forth the interesting geological features of a Precambrian iron deposit located beneath the cover rocks of the Great Plains region and to comment upon the methods of discovery and interpretation of the nature of the body. "AFTER SPENDING a lifetime in the mining industry it is normal that one should be concerned with the future of his profession, especially if he is directly responsible for the education and formation of future mining engineers. It is not necessary to insist on the importance of mining for Canada and for the entire world to prove the necessity of the Mining Engineer. A statement was made by Zay Jeffries, former vicepresident of General Electric Co., and here I quote: ""Even though minerals without man are of no moment, man would not be man as we know him without minerals ... ""minerals are as essential to the life of social man as food is to man himself"". This certainly expresses magnificently the purpose of the mining profession. These are the reasons why I have accepted to present my views on the future of the Mining Engineer. If I express some concern it is not because I feel that there is any danger for the profession to disappear; men will always respond to a challenge and this can be found in the extraction of minerals as well as in any other field of human endeavour. However, the first big question concerns the competitive position of Canada in the world of mining. To be made available to Canadians and to the rest of the world, all this tremendous potential mineral wealth that our country has been so generously endowed with by nature must be gained from the earth's crust at a competitive cost. Otherwise it will never become ore and will have no value. Let us not forget that although minerals are discovered, mines are not found but are made. So let us be more efficient mine makers. To accomplish this end, it is the duty of the different responsible organizations at all levels - be they governmental, para-governmental, public or private institutions - to do their utmost to assure the profitable development of our mineral wealth. The University has an all-important role to play in preparing all the specialists required by this intricate machine that mining is. All the different disciplines of engineering, health, social and -managerial sciences are needed for the good functioning of the mining industry. Although they are all essential, some will play a more important role as a member of the structure. In this discussion it is the role of the most important member, the mining engineer, who is actually responsible for the extraction of the minerals from the earth's crust that must be established. From this we will then be able to analyse his responsibilities and try to suggest the mining engineering program most suitable to prepare this engineer for his future role."

This paper reviews the circumstances that led to the development and construction of a commercial-scale vertical shaft carbonizer at Conmore, Alberta. This form coking process may be regarded as having potential application in other areas. Coal pelletizing offers a promising method of decreasing coal agglomeration costs under certain circumstances. Pellets can be rolled easily from -35-mesh coal, provided that a minimum of -200-mesh coal is present. Bentonite was found to be the best binder and was most effective when added in amounts of about 2 per cent. The water content of the coal pellets was observed to vary from 18 to 23 per cent. As a by-product of this investigation, it seems possible that fine coal could be converted into stoker feed by this process. A short investigation of the effect of heating rate on the carbonization of pellets was conducted. Construction equipment is an important type of resources of heavy construction contractors. Since equipment breakdowns can cause project delays and significant financial losses, the contractors are eager to know those factors causing equipment failures directly or indirectly, related to equipment design, maintenance, and operations. Although Bayesian network can be used for diagnostic analysis of failure events or making predictive analysis, building a Bayesian network for such purpose can be difficult as the cause-effect relations can be subjective and their conditional probabilities change with a wide variety of causal factors. A hybrid approach is proposed in this paper to update the Bayesian diagnostic network structures and parameters using real life data, the conditional probabilities and cause-effect relationships can be dynamically updated with observed failure records to reflect the real life situations of a complex equipment system. A case study is conducted to show the benefits of the hybrid approach in construction equipment diagnostic analysis.

PERUSAL of a list of present-day commercial explosives perhaps does not convey a full realization that there has been a great deal of improvement since the original dynamite was discovered nor that, in recent years, great developments have taken place in specialized explosives. This is true particularly of high-explosives for use in metalliferous mining or what is more commonly termed 'hard-rock' mining. Not many decades ago, only two or three types of explosive were avail-'able for commercial use. One was black blasting powder. Another was ordinary nitro-glycerin dynamite in various strengths. Black blasting powder remains with but very little change. Despite its ancient lineage, it is still with us as perhaps the sole explosive in use today which is almost identical in appearance, physical properties, and working ability or execution co the original. Which dynamite the story is different. Its evolution may be likened to that of the dog, nitro-glycerin as first discovered being the counterpart of the wild dog and, like it, dangerous and hard to control. The original dynamite as made by Nobel might then be considered as representing the first domesticaced species. This original dynamite, however, has been 'crossed with other bloods' until one sees now many distinct 'breeds' in the list. Present-day explosives still have the 'bark' and the 'bite', but with control and research have come many improvements; and types have been created which are specially adapted for particular kinds of work. We still have the direct descendant of Nobel's dynamite in the form of an improved nitro-glycerin dynamite. This C-I-L explosive, Polar Dynamite, is no longer the best type to use in the hunt for gold, silver, iron, and other metals. There have been developed other explosives more suitable for chat work. In Canada, such explosives are accomplishing this work effectively, not only where climatic conditions are moderate but through the rigours of our northern winters, with their sub-zero temperatures.

"Abstract - The lipid component in hydrothermal deposits of the Logachev vent field, at 14°45_N of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) and Broken Spur vent field, at 29°N of the MAR, was studied. Biochemical, gas chromatographic (GS), and molecular mass methods (GC-MS) research established the mixed nature of the organic matter (OM) including phytoplanktonogenous, chemosynthesized lipids, and lipids of questionable origin. Specific local conditions around the sulfide ores of the black smokers (absence of free oxygen and presence of reduced copper, which prevents OM degradation) facilitate the preservation of biogenic material, including bacteria. The main differences between the lipid compositions of the hydrothermal deposits of these two vent fields relate to the variable nature of hydrothermal circulation systems.At the 14°45_N vent field, high-temperature hydrothermal fields are forming due to the reaction of sea water with upper mantle ultrabasic rocks during serpentinization (a deep hydrothermal circulation system). High pressure and temperature (>400°C), a reducing environment and the presence of various metal oxides are favorable for the abiogenic synthesis of CH4 and oil hydrocarbons (HC). At the Broken Spur vent field, hydrothermal deposits are forming above axial crust magma chambers due to the interaction of sea water and basalts (an axial hydrothermal circulation system). Abiogenic synthesis of HC also occurs in this situation, but to a considerably lesser extent."

"Very little attention was given to the regulation of uranium mills by the Atomic Energy Control Board prior to 1974. The ore grade treated by Canadian mills in the past was in the order of 0.08 - 0.3% U and it was not difficult to keep the exposure of workers well below regulatory limits. Furthermore, uranium milling has also been substantially free of occupational illness because environmental control has been generally satisfactory (l).The discovery of higher grade ore bodies in Canada has resulted in higher radiation levels in one mill and this has partly contributed to a need for increased radiation monitoring in the mill. In addition, as greater insight is gained on the effects of radiation, the implementation of the ALARA principle is being stressed at all mills.The concept of ALARA was emphasized by the ICRP (International Committee for Radiological Protection) in 1977 and stands for '""as low as reasonably achievable'"". It is based on the premise that no proven threshold for potential effects of radiation exists and that the actual individual exposure should therefore be kept as far below the regulatory limit as possible, economic and social factors being taken into account."

A magnesium alloy modeled after commercial alloy WE54 was thermomechanically processed and characterized to understand the mechanisms by which its texture can be randomized, as reported by Ball and Prangnell [1]. Samples were deformed in plane strain compression to prescribed strain levels at temperatures high enough to prevent cracking and then recrystallized. The deformation texture is very similar to that observed after plane strain compression (e.g., rolling) of other Mg alloys, such as common AZ31. However, the texture can radically evolve during recrystallization. Annealing above the precipitate solvus temperature results in a nearly random recrystallization texture where the initially strong basal texture is completely eliminated. Annealing below the solvus temperature produces a recrystallized texture similar to conventional Mg alloys, i.e., a weakened basal texture. If this same material is then annealed above the solvus to promote grain growth, a randomized texture evolves, which is similar that of samples simply recrystallized above the solvus. It is hypothesized that a sort of preferred growth mechanism, whereby grains with random orientation grow faster than those with the original basal texture, contributes significantly to the texture randomization observed in wrought magnesium alloys containing rare earth elements.

"Eastern Canadian thermal coal mined at Minto, New Brunswick, and in western Cape Breton at St. Rose, Inverness County, Nova Scotia, contains 6-8 per cent sulphur. Both coals are high volatile bituminous. types. The Minto coal averages 18 per cent ash, 7 per cent sulphur and has a Btu rating of 11,900 per lb. Pyritic sulphur accounts for 75 per cent of the total sulphur and the remainder is largely organic; the amount of sulphate sulphur is negligible. This means that in a 7 per cent sulphur coal, 2 per cent is organic and 5 per cent pyritic sulphur. Pit-head St. Rose coal contains approximately 10 per cent ash, 7 per cent sulphur and 11 ,800 Btu/lb. The distribution of sulphur is different to that of Minto coal because about 12 per cent sulphate sulphur is present. Thus, a 7 per cent sulphur coal would contain 4 per cent pyritic, 2 per cent organic and 1 per cent sulphate sulphur.The iron sulphides, pyrite and, to a lesser extent, marcassite occur over a wide size range from large sulphur balls to crack fillings, lenses, and individual crystals and framboids. Coarse-grained pyrite and sulphur balls are easily separated during washing. It is the fine grain sizes, intimately mixed with the coal constituents, that are difficult to separate. Quantimet analyses of the fine grains in coal from both localities showed that about 50 per cent were smaller than 30 micron(1).No efforts have been made to wash the Inverness coal of Nova Scotia and in 1980 washing ceased in New Brunswick. Previously, the Minto coal was processed in an antiquated jig circuit which reduced ash from the strip operation run-of-mine value of more than 20 per cent to less than 18. More effective removal of ash and sulphur could clearly be obtained. Laboratory tests on both Minto and St. Rose coal have shown that ash rejection rates of 40 to 50 per cent at yields of 70-80 per cent were possible(2), Little information on sulphur removal was available."

The depletion of higher grade mineral reserves will accelerate the trend toward production from progressively larger and lower grade deposits. The discovery of adequate reserves of leaner ores will require the development of improved exploration techniques with a greater depth range. The principal challenges to the Canadian mining industry are to find the mineral resources required to meet fast growing world demand and to develop mining methods and equipment to ensure production costs which will strengthen our position in export markets in the face of in-creasing world competition. The challenges cannot be met without intensive efforts to attract more technical men to the industry and to improve their training.

For a country that is as important a gold producer as Canada, the return to the gold standard of the major commercial countries of the world during the past five years is of particular significance. To the Canadian gold mining industry, the advantages of the gold standard are a matter of more than theoretical importance. According to economic theory, prices are determined by the relation between the demand for, and the supply of, money. The demand consists of the offering of goods for money; the more goods offered, the greater the demand. The supply consists of the total money available for the purchase of goods. The total supply of goods to be exchanged through the instrumentality of money remaining the same, an increase in the supply of money will, according to this theory, raise prices; conversely, a decrease in the supply of money will lower prices. Let us imagine that everyone in the world suddenly had twice as much money, and that the sum total of all goods remained the same. Is it not obvious that we would pay just double the price for these goods? In Canada today, most people have approximately 50 per cent grea.ter income than in 1913, and the average price for all articles sold in Canada is 50 per cent above those in 1913.

"Modern microprocessor systems make it possible to use several variables to anticipate changes in the process and to react with responses before upsets can be magnified by the process or by control action.Through tighter control, ""insurance"" can be eliminated from process set points without affecting product quality. This bed moves through several zones in the furnace where it is dried, preheated, fired and cooled by streams of gases which are pulled or blown through the bed by a series o f large process fan s. Control systems for straight grate plants are designed to maintain gas flow through the machine to ensure that sufficient time and heat are available to raise the temperature of the entire green bed to 1300°C where hematite bonding take s place.For the pas t two year s a new approach to control systems using microprocessor-based instrumentation has been designed and tested in an existing plant with a straight grate indurating furnace processing magnetite ore. The purpose of the test was to determine the most efficient operating setpoints for all levels of production above fifty per cent of design capacity. Through a combination of feed forward control, variable setpoints and additional loops, significant savings have been realized. Thus far the project has taught us much about control systems design and operation, energy utilization, and the process itself."
