The White Mesa Mill (WMM) began operating in 1980 as a regional processing mill owned by Energy Fuels Nuclear, Inc. Original mill design was for 656,000 Mtpa of U ore producing 1,250 tpa of U3O8 concentrate. Sustained market downturns delayed facility upgrades during most of the 1980s and 1990s. The new owners of WMM, Denison Mines, elected to advance the regional mill concept in 2007 with the modernization of these facilities. This paper details decisions taken and lessons learned in plant redesign, choice of leading-edge instrumentation, motor controls and process automation, training and some example benefits from process control stabilization.

Ozone has been proposed to pretreat refractory ores before the cyanidation process for precious metals extraction. As pyrargyrite is one of the silver species most common in Mexican refractory ores, the ozonization of this silver sulfide was studied. The effect of pH and ozone concentration on silver dissolution was evaluated by means of a factorial experimental design. Two levels of sulfuric acid concentration and ozone in gas concentration were evaluated: 0.18 and 0.72 mol/L of acid and 0.054 and 0.077 gO3/L, respectively. The highest silver dissolution was obtained when using the higher acid and ozone concentration.

"Inco Gold Company was created in 1987 as an unincorporated business unit of Inco Limited. In 1988, Inco Gold Management Inc. was incorporated to supply management, exploration and engineering services to this unit. The first new project, at Casa Berardi, Quebec, was brought to production in September 1988, less than two years after completion of exploration. For 1989, Inco Gold's exploration and capital expenditures have been budgeted at approximately $94 million, a record level. Inco Gold holds interests in more than 80 precious metals ventures and prospects in Canada, the United States, Brazil, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and France. The most advanced projects, in addition to Casa Berardi, are at Mineral Hill, Jardine, Montana, where initial production is anticipated in the third quarter of1989, and Crixas in central Brazil, where production is scheduled to begin during the fourth quarter of the same year.BackgroundTraditionally, Inco Limited's mineral exploration has concentrated on nickel and other base metals but since the early 1980s Inco's exploration activity has focussed strongly on precious metals, principally gold. As a result, three deposits have been discovered and developed . In order to accelerate the establishment of a strong gold mining enterprise with its own specific growth and profit objectives, Inco Gold Company was created in 1987 as an unincorporated business unit. At the end of 1988 Inco Gold's share of drill-indicated gold reserves was approximately 14 million short tons containing 3.4 million ounces of gold.At Casa Berardi in northwestern Quebec, one mine is in production and another is planned to open in 1990. Properties at Crixas in Brazil and at Jardine, Montana, U.S.A., were being readied for production in 1989. By 1991, Inco Gold's share of gold production is expected to be 125 000 ounces with a target of 400 000 ounces annually by the mid-1990s."

MR. A. F. B. Norwood: Having been associated in the past few years with nine different plants roasting aurif erous concentrates in Australia, two of which were new installations for which design and construction were undertaken by the writer, I read Mr. Archibald's paper with very great interest, and I deem it a great privilege, as a member of a sister Institution, to be invited to contribute to the discussion on the paper. I wish to congratulate the author on a very informative and interesting paper, and, although situated many thousands of miles away, I feel I have gathered from it a very close idea of the operating conditions and of the work that has been carried on at the Beattie gold mine. Working along somewhat different lines, it is interesting to note that the conclusions drawn by the author run closely parallel to those accepted in Western Australia, viz., that the object of roasting is to obtain a porous calcine, and that this can best be achieved by roasting first at a temperature below 900 deg. F. to 1,000 deg. F., and then raising the temperature at the finish of the roast. Turning first to the laboratory work, the materials I have studied in Western Australia cover a range from those with little or no arsenic to concentrates carrying as high ?as 20 per cent, i.e., even higher than in the analysis quoted for the eoncentrates from Nepheline Products, Limited. In the ease of arsenic-free pyrite concentrates, the roast is ideally carried out at a temperature ranging from 900 deg. F. to 1,000 ferric oxide is one cause of the refractory gold remaining In deg. F. No improvement in extraction is obtained when the calcines are cyanided by raising the final temperature above this point; nevertheless, in technical practice it is desirable to finish the roast at 1,200 deg. F. in order to decompose basic ferric sulphate and thereby reduce the consumption of chemicals in the subsequent cyanidation step. However, if at any stage of the roast the temperature is raised above 1,200 deg. F., the extraction by cyanidation falls, and continues to do so the higher the maximum temperature that is reached. In mining operations the cost of timber is an item of much importance, because the life of mine timbers is, in many cases, very short and, as the supply of the better grades becomes depleted, less durable kinds must be used. This, of course, tends to shorten still further the period of service-ability. While it is possible that concrete and steel may, to some extent, take the place of timber in mines, their high initial cost and the difficulty in installation will greatly restrict their use. Moreover, wood, besides being comparatively cheap to handle, possesses other desirable qualities, and for many purposes a satisfactory substitute is hard to find. Both the decreasing supply and the increasing price of timber make its more efficient utilization imperative. AGENCIES DESTRUCTIVE TO MINE TIMBERS Timber used in mines is exposed to destruction from many sources. Wear, breakage, and waste are responsible for much loss. Wood rollers and drum laggings must be frequently replaced on account of the constant wear by ropes. Unprotected timber in chutes and mills is also rapidly worn by abrasion, and track ties in main haulage ways get worn by the feet of mules, cut by ropes, etc. Large amounts of timber are broken by 'crush' and 'squeeze,' and much temporary timber is buried beyond all recovery in pillar workings and in those mines which resort to back filling. Decay and insect attack, however, cause the greatest damage. If not totally destroyed by one or both of these, the timbers frequently become so weakened that they break under the pressure upon them.

This paper explores Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) reporting practices within the mining industry. Specifically, this paper investigates how and why a mining company makes voluntary reporting decisions to include the GRI indicators that may be considered ?negative? to the company?s reputation. Due to the voluntary nature of the GRI Guidelines, a GRI adopter is not legally obligated to report every GRI indicator. Not surprisingly, empirical studies that evaluated the extent to which companies? sustainability reports meet the GRI requirements (Guenther, Hoppe, & Poser, 2006; Morhardt, Baird, & Freeman, 2002; Samy, Odemilin, & Bampton, 2010; Skouloudis, Evangelinos, & Kourmousis, 2009) have found that reporting practices of the companies under their studies are well below the standards reflected in the GRI Guidelines. An influential study by Clarkson et al (2008) uses economic-based and socio-political theories to explain variation in companies? environmental disclosure. They have found that, as predicted by economic-based theory, superior environmental performers disclosed more ?hard? (i.e. verifiable) environmental information. Inferior environmental performers are found to disclose more ?soft? (i.e., not easily verifiable) claims, which is consistent with socio-political theories (Clarkson, Li, Richardson, & Vasvari, 2008). However, this study and the existing literature do not adequately explain why a company may act in a way that cannot be explained by economic-based and socio-political theories, for example, why it would report some negative soft data that it is not required to report. This paper intends to address this literature gap. GRI reporting by a Canadian mining company, which I would like to call ?Company C?, is used as a case study for this paper. Company C was selected for this research because in addition to ?positive? information, its GRI-based sustainability report also includes both hard and soft ?negative? information such as grievances. Research methods include interviewing Company C?s employees who are involved in preparing GRI reports and reviewing documents prepared both by the company and by external parties. I find that integrative social contracts theory (ISCT) offers a valuable explanation to Company C?s reporting practices. From the ISCT perspective, Company C?s management appears to feel that the company is obligated under social contracts to be transparent. Therefore, Company C disclosed both positive and negative social and environmental information to the public because the management appeared to think that it is the right thing to do. At the same time, being transparent about the bad news gave the company an opportunity to conclude that it had done something to avoid future occurrence of the negative incidents. Therefore, I propose that, in addition to the economic and socio-political theories that are more often used in literature, insights from ISCT are instrumental in improving our understanding of the corporate non-financial reporting practices phenomenon.

"Recently, weight saving of automobiles has been strongly required to solve the global environmental problems. Mg alloys are one of the promising candidates as a new material for automobile components. However, the application of the Mg alloys is limited due to their poor corrosion resistance. In the authors’ preliminary study, an Al/Mg/Al clad sheet was fabricated by hot extrusion and subsequent hot forging. The clad sheet exhibited a high corrosion resistance and excellent super plasticity. More specifically, the elongation of the clad sheet was as high as 550%.Importantly, despite that the elongation of Al itself was only 40%without cladding with Mg, the ductility of Al was greatly improved in the form of the clad sheet. In the present study, in order to clarify the mechanism of the superplastic deformation of the Al part in the clad sheet, the microstructure evolution of the Al during the tensile de formation is investigated. The tensile tests were conducted at a temperature of 573 K and at a strain rateof1.0×10-3s-1. The Al exhibited fiber-type texture at the beginning of the tensile deformation, and brass-type texture after the elongation of 50%.INTRODUCTIONMg alloys have been gaining attention because of their excellent properties e.g. light weight, good recyclability and high electromagnetic shielding. However, their practical applications have been limited due to their poor corrosion resistance. In the authors’ previous study, in order to solve this problem, Al coating on Mg alloy by hot extrusion has been proposed, and the Al-coated Mg alloy plate was fabricated(Tokunaga, Matsuura, &Ohno,2012). The plate was hot-rolled and an Al/Mg/Al clad sheet was fabricated. No cracks or debondings were observed at the Al/Mg interface. The sheet exhibited a high corrosion resistance in a comparable level as pure Al. Also, the sheet exhibited a large and uniform elongation of 550%in a tensile test at a temperature of 573 K and at a strain rate of 1.0×10-3s-1without any breakings or debondings of the Al part(Tokunaga, Matsuura, &Ohno,2014).Mg alloys have been known to exhibit a superplastic characteristic when the grain size is small. However, it is known that the pure Al does not generally exhibit the super plasticity. As mentioned above, the Al-coated Mg alloy sheet exhibited 550% of elongation in the authors’ previous study (Tokunagaet al., 2014). However, the pure Al itself showed only 40% of elongation, while the Mg alloy itself exhibited 800% of elongation. Thus, it has been demonstrated that the pure Al was super plastically elongated when it was bonded with the Mg alloy. Generally, deformation mechanism of the super plasticity of the Mg alloy is known as a grain boundary sliding. On the other hand, the mechanism of the superplastic elongation of the pure Al is still unclear. The purpose of the present study is investigation of the deformation behavior of the Al part in the Al/Mg/Al clad sheet during tensile de formation."

"This paper focusses on the strength or capacity of cable bolts and introduces a new perspective for cable bolt design by demonstrating that mining-induced stress changes may affect cables in a detrimental manner. The concept underlying a novel cable bolt pull-out resistanceor bond capacity model is described and its practical significance is demonstrated by application to a simple two dimensional scenario of a fall-of-ground.A number of practical implications emerging from the application of this model are discussed to provide guidance to ground control personnel jar improving cable bolt support systems in mining applications. These include cable layout optimization, use of cable pre-reinforcements, assessment of embedment length requirements, need for plated cables (or straps), use of bird-caged cables (or buttons), and grout quality issues.IntroductionDuring the last decade, cable bolting has become a standard support technique in mining for handling wide spans, reinforcing are passes, preventing or reducing dilution of ore in marginally stable stopes, and for many other rock support need s.In its infancy, many deficiencies in cable bolt supports resulted from improper installation techniques and, in particular, grout quality control problems and the use of empty breather tubes (Goris, 1990). The development of special grout pumps and fail proof placement procedures (Oliver, 1992; Bourchier and O'Flaherty, 1992) have eliminated many of these early problems. Nevertheless, there are still situations where cables seem to lose their capacity during mining, and in these cases the cables do not provide the expected and needed ground support. In some instances, cables perform extremely well, whereas in others the same support layout and quality of support installation seem to be insufficient, allowing falls-of-ground or progressive cavings to occur."

"Tumbler Ridge, Canada's newest resource community, has been developed differently than have been other resource communities.Since its conceptualization, emphasis has been placed on the establishment of a traditional municipal government at early a stage as possible.Planning f or the community goes back to 1977. By then, extensive study by provincial agencies had shown a new resource town would be required to exploit north east coal. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs, in conjunction with a consultant named R.A. Rabnett began the extensive Tumbler Ridge conceptual plan.The results of the conceptual plan are evident in the organizational and planning goals of Tumbler Ridge. In every aspect from the election of officials to some financial matters, the town functions as a normal municipality. With the resource companies of the North East Coal Development within its municipal boundaries. Tumbler Ridge has been able to debenture its capital projects against its municipal tax base.The town's ability to function as a normal municipality is enhanced by its control over Crown land it has purchased from the province. This gives it further control over the development of the community and helps in establishing agreements with the resource companies and the provincial government to ensure that housing and service needs are met. While resource company representatives sit on certain municipal committees, their roles are advisory in nature.The community continues to move toward full municipal status and will have a fully elected Council by 1986.BackgroundPlanning for the development of northeast British Columbia coal resources began in 1976 under the aegis of the provincial Cabinet Committee on Coal Development. A series of subcommittees were established including a Townsite/Community Development subcommittee. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs chaired this subcommittee and continued as the lead agency for the provincial settlement planning effort over the period 1976 to 1981."

The effect of temperature on the cutting forces during machining of alumina reinforced aluminum composites was investigated, Aluminum 6061, 10% Al2O3 reinforced composite and 20% Al2O3 reinforced composite were tested, A 5/8-inch diameter high-speed steel end mill, a Micro 100 TiN coated single edge endmill cutter and a two-fluted solid carbide insert cutter were used for tooling, The results, in general, showed an increase in the cutting forces as the temperature of the material increased, From the raw data, there are temperatures ranges in which the force data did decrease but they were insignificant with regards to predicting a downward trend. A regression analysis was used to understand which variables had the greatest affect on the forces being generated, The correlation and regression analysis showed that at 600 rpm (velocity: HSS- 98,2 sfpm, Micro 100 cutter - 78,5 sfpm, solid carbide cutter - 192,4 sfpm) the tooling, the workpiece material, built up edge, and temperature were statistically significant factors in the test, Tooling was a significant variable in all testing, The smallest forces recorded during machining were generated with the solid carbide two-fluted endmill cutter, Visually, the solid carbide tooling produced a better surface finish during the testing which made it the tool of choice, In addition, the force data proved that as the cutting speeds were increased, the cutting forces decreased.

"The objective of this study was to gain a better insight into the kinetics of chalcocite leaching in an acidic ferric sulfate media. Chalcocite leaching in acidic media is known to occur in two sequential stages, with the first stage being much faster than the second. The leaching residue from the first stage is typically assumed to be a covellite type of material. This study hypothesized that the mineralogy after the first-stage leaching varies in response to different leaching conditions. We investigated the dependency of the mineralogy of the first-stage leaching residue on temperature and initial ferric concentration. The experimental results showed that chalcocite leaching behavior altered upon temperature and initial ferric concentration. A proposed combined reaction model was found to be able to describe the experimental data. The first stage was described very well by the shrinking core diffusion model while the second stage was described very well by the shrinking core chemical reaction model. This finding has important implications for mine operations to manipulate leaching conditions to create the desirable leaching kinetics.INTRODUCTION The kinetics of chalcocite leaching in sulfate media has been extensively studied (Cheng & Lawson, 1991; Fisher, 1994; Fisher, Flores, & Henderson, 1992; Niu, Ruan, Tan, Jia, & Sun, 2015). "ForewordA symposium on base metal deposits was held in Bathurst, New Brunswick, from June 10-13, 1990, sponsored jointly by the Geological Surveys Branch of the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources and Energy, the New Brunswick Prospectors and Developers Association, and the Geology Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. Papers prepared for the symposuim are being published as a series of articles in the CIM Bulletin. This third paper (the first was by Fyffe, et al., in Vol. 83, No. 938, the second is in this issue) in the series presents an overview of the tectonic setting and geochemistry of base metal deposits in the Eastern Townships of Quebec.ABSTRACTIt is well known that the classification system of volcanogenic massive sulphides (VMS) is based upon their metal content. This metal content, the result of hydrothermal solutions circulating within strata underlying the deposits, is generally thought to be related directly to two parameters: (1) the nature of the underlying stratigraphic sequence; and (2) the physico-chemical conditions that existed at the time of the hydrothermal event. Furthermore, these two parameters are, in turn, related to the tectonic setting. One must bear in mind that these parameters are diachronous and evolve with time. These factors are considered in our analysis of the major VMS deposits of the southeastern Quebec Appalachians. This analysis will describe the time and environment of formation of these deposits and integrate them into an evolving paleotectonic model.VMS deposits in the southeastern Quebec Appalachians formed during three distinct metallogenic episodes. During the first episode, which involved early closing of the Iapetus Ocean and associated destruction of oceanic crust by subduction processes(Early Ordovician?), cupriferous VMS deposits hosted by pillowed, mafic (boninitic) lava flows were formed in immature island-arc systems (""Cyprus-type"", e.g. Huntingdon deposit).In the second episode, which also occurred during the closure of Iapetus but at a later stage (Early to Middle Ordovician), mature island-arcs formed and hosted polymetallic VMS deposits (""Kuroko-type"", e.g. Eustis deposit).Finally, during culmination of the Taconic and/or Acadian orogenies (Middle Ordovician and/or Devonian), transtensional basins, associated with tholeitic to transitional mafic volcanism began to develop. Major sedimentation occurred contemporaneous with volcanism, and within this framework polymetallic VMS deposits were formed (""Besshi-type"", e.g. the Memphremagog deposit).Although incomplete, the proposed paleotectonic model represents the sequence of the tectonic settings that prevailed during the formation of the VMS deposits of the southeastern Quebec Appalachians."

Mercapto organic compound SDMP was used as a depressant for separation of copper activated marmatite from pyrrhotite in the presence of butyl xanthate. Flotation results show that SDMP has strong depressing effect on pyrrhotite recovery in the absence and presence of copper ion, but has promotional effect on marmatite recovery when added together with copper ion. The flotation test of mineral mixtures shows that copper-activated marmatite could be separated efficiently from pyrrhotite using SDMP as depressant. Infrared adsorption spectra demonstrate that SDMP has a strong adsorption on pyrrhotite surface through its functional groups such as ?SH, -S03.

In the present study, a series of cyanidation experiments were performed on a bulk sulfide concentrate which contained silver in four distinct phases, to determine its extraction rate, varying the oxygen concentration. The results showed that three of the four phases were refractory, aguilarite (Ag,iSeS) being the only leachable phase, and that the effect of the oxidant concentration is minimal. Mathematical simulations were performed, adjusting only the Damkohler number to adequately fit the experimental data. This model, and the mechanism implied, was compared with that found for acanthite (Ag2S) in a previous study, and the differences between the two discussed.

It is well-known that Saskatchewan has the world’s richest uranium deposits and advanced processing technologies. Unlike the Saskatchewan deposits, complicated mineralogy is common for other places in the world. Mineralogy dictates the process. Mineral Processing at the Saskatchewan Research Council has been working with the uranium industry worldwide since its inception to develop effective processing technologies to suit the unique mineralogy of each deposit. This paper reviews the research and development of uranium processing technologies in the current major uranium production areas such as Canada, as well as the potential development regions like Argentina and Sweden. Acidic and alkaline leaching processes, as well as by-product recovery technologies are discussed based on mineralogy.

"Phosphate rock is shipped by boat from Florida to Vancouver, B.C., where it is unloaded and stored in a 50,000-ton silo. It is shipped from Vancouver in 100-ton hopper cars in 80-car trains to Fort Saskatchewan. Both the ship and the hopper cars are on a back-haul with potash. The rock cars are unloaded at Fort Saskatchewan at a rate of approximately 4 cars per hour. The rock is stored in three concrete silos, 40 ft in diameter by 110 ft high, which hold 18,000 tons of recoverable rock with 2,000 tons dead space. The rock is reclaimed from the silos by gravity and fed to the phosphoric acid plant by remotely operated conveying equipment.Problems encountered in the operation include scheduling the rock shipments, contamination of the rock with potash, and handling the 80-car trains both in Vancouver and Fort Saskatchewan."

Deformation in a material at any temperature is known to consist of two major components - a reversible (elastic) part and an irreversible part (often called plastic). What is not universally known is the fact that at high temperatures greater than about 0.4Tm, where Tm, is the melting point in Kelvin, the reversible part includes not only elastic but also a delayed elastic (recoverable but time dependent) component. A very simple computational model is presented here for a constant-strain stress relaxation test (SRT) on the basis of a three-component constant-stress rheological equation derived from strain relaxation and recovery test (SRRT) data. It is shown that the rapid stress reduction during the early periods of relaxation when the stresses are high is governed primarily by delayed elasticity irrespective of the imposed strain level. This is in contradiction to the popular concept prevailing today. The asymptotic approach to a quasi-stable stress rate at longer times and lower stresses is, however, controlled by viscous flow (power-law creep). The validity of the theory is examined by comparing the predictions with experimental results obtained for a titanium-base alloy Ti-6246 at 0.45Tm.

Increasing demand for rare earth elements (REE) is expected to lead to new development and expansion in industries processing and or recycling REE. For some industrial operators, sending aqueous waste streams to a municipal wastewater treatment plant, or publicly owned treatment works (POTW), may be a cost effective disposal option. However, wastewaters that adversely affect the performance of biological wastewater treatment at the POTW will not be accepted. The objective of our research is to assess the effects of wastewaters that might be generated by new rare earth element (REE) beneficiation or recycling processes on biological wastewater treatment systems. We have been investigating the impact of yttrium and europium on the biological activity of activated sludge collected from an operating municipal wastewater treatment plant. We have also examined the effect of an organic complexant that is commonly used in REE extraction and separations; similar compounds may be a component of newly developed REE recycling processes. Our preliminary results indicate that in the presence of Eu, respiration rates for the activated sludge decrease relative to the no-Eu controls, at Eu concentrations ranging from <10 to 660 µM. Yttrium appears to inhibit respiration as well, although negative impacts have been observed only at the highest Y amendment level tested (660 µM). The organic complexant appears to have a negative impact on activated sludge activity as well, although results are variable. Ultimately the intent of this research is to help REE industries to develop environmentally friendly and economically sustainable beneficiation and recycling processes.

Boliden Harjavalta has operated a copper flash smelter since 1949 thus the smelter celebrates 70th anniversary of flash smelting in 2019. This paper shortly describes the historical perspective of the smelter and gives an update of the current operational issues and process modifications made during the recent years. The plant has carried out several major investments lately providing a firm view on the future. A new landfill area for the final slag was commissioned in 2018. A modernization of the concentrate storage area, a new acid plant and a debottlenecking project of the smelting line have been recently commissioned. At the same time, the tankhouse capacity will be expanded. This paper focuses on smelter modernizations. INTRODUCTION Boliden is a metal company operating mainly in northern Europe with core competencies in the fields of exploration, mining, smelting and metal recycling. Boliden Harjavalta, located in Finland, is part of the Smelters Business area of the Boliden Group and operates a copper and nickel smelter with related sulphuric acid plant in Harjavalta, and a copper refinery in Pori. As a short historical review, Harjavalta’s history may be dated back to the year 1910 when the Outokumpu ore body in eastern Finland was discovered. By the end of 1913, a copper mine was in operation and a copper plant based on Hybinette process was ready for commissioning. Due to difficulties in metal recoveries and throughput the Hybinette process was permanently shut down in 1929, and 100% of the mining production was sold as concentrate abroad. As the mine production increased steadily, a decision of a new smelter was made in early 30’s. In 1936 Outokumpu’s copper smelter based on electric smelting was commissioned in Imatra. The smelter was dismantled and transferred to Harjavalta during the final stages of the Second World War. The copper refinery started in Pori already in 1941 and the first copper anodes were cast in Harjavalta in 1945. First sulphuric acid plant started operation in 1947. Due to the post-war shortage of electrical energy, the plant metallurgists initiated a major development work to start exploiting the latent heat of concentrates. Thus, the flash smelting method was developed in Harjavalta and commissioned in 1949. Ten years later, flash smelting was also applied for nickel concentrates. Table 1 summarizes major historical and technical milestones of Harjavalta. The history of flash smelting is described in details in another paper of this conference (Jåfs et al., 2019).
